1.  In birds with bi-parental care, handicapping is often assumed to decrease the amount of parental care of the handicapped partner. We discuss how handicapping could alter the shape of the handicapped bird's survival–effort curve (theoretical curve relating the survival of a parent to its effort) and show that the optimal response could yield a decrease, no response or even an increase in effort of the handicapped bird.
2.  Male or female great tits Parus major (L.) were handicapped during the nestling period by clipping a number of feathers in order to study the effects on parental care and body condition.
3.  Handicapped males significantly decreased their feeding rates, while handicapped females did not. Condition of handicapped females significantly deteriorated, while condition of handicapped males did not change during the experiment. Females with a handicapped partner fully compensated for their partner's decrease in work rate, while males with a handicapped partner did not show any compensation and even tended to decrease their feeding rates.
4.  Using an inverse optimality approach, we reconstructed the theoretical curve relating the survival of a parent to its effort on the basis of the experimental effects. The handicapped male's survival–effort curve appeared to be slightly steeper than that of handicapped females. This suggests that handicapped males suffer more from an increase in effort than handicapped females.  相似文献

Abstract.— Carotenoids cannot be synthesized by birds and thus have to be ingested with food, suggesting that ca-rotenoid-based plumage coloration is environmentally determined. However signaling functions ascribed to plumage imply that plumage coloration is the outcome of an evolutionary process based on genetic variation. By means of a cross-fostering design we show significant effects of both a common rearing environment and the brood from which a nestling originally came from (common origin) on the plumage coloration of nestling great tits ( Parus major ). This demonstration of origin-related variation in carotenoid-based plumage coloration suggests that the observed variation of the trait has a partial genetic basis. Consistent with environmental determination of this trait, we also found a significant positive correlation between the color saturation of nestlings and their foster-father's plumage. There was no significant correlation between nestling plumage coloration and the food quantity provided to the nestlings by the male, the female, or both parents. This suggests that the nestling-foster father correlation arises by the carotenoid quantity ingested rather than the food quantity per se. No significant nestling-true father correlation was found, which suggests that nestling plumage coloration did not indirectly evolve due to sexual selection. Consistent with this result there was no significant correlation between the nestling's plumage color and its coloration as a breeding adult the following year, suggesting that nestling plumage color is a different trait than the first year plumage.  相似文献

Six microsatellite loci were developed for a passerine bird, the great tit (Parus major), using two methods. These loci were polymorphic (3–8 alleles per locus) and exhibited expected heterozygosities from 0.45 to 0.77. At one locus the genotypic frequencies deviated significantly from Hardy–Weinberg expectations.  相似文献

Genetic variation of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in 18 great tits (Parus major) from three neighboring localities in Sweden was investigated with eight tetranucleotide restriction endonucleases. The 18 individuals could be separated into 13 different maternal lineages. The high number of female lineages present in this regional population contrasts with a low level of sequence divergence between the different mtDNA clones, with a mean of 0.19% sequence divergence between all individuals. There was no obvious spatial structuring of mtDNA clones among the three localities. The presence of a high number of different clones with a low degree of sequence divergence could be explained by the effects of a large long-term effective population size, with the mtDNA clones having diverged about 25,000–200,000 years ago. This study was supported by the Swedish Natural Science Research Council, the Erik Philip-Sörensen Foundation, and the Nilsson-Ehle Foundation.  相似文献

Evolutionary theory of parent-offspring conflict explains beggingdisplays of nestling birds as selfish attempts to influenceparental food allocation. Models predict that this conflictmay be resolved by honest signaling of offspring need to parents,or by competition among nestmates, leading to escalated beggingscrambles. Although the former type of models has been qualitativelysupported by experimental studies, the potential for a beggingcomponent driven by scramble competition cannot be excludedby the evidence. In a brood-size manipulation experiment withgreat tits, Parus major, we explored the scramble componentin the begging activity of great tit nestlings by investigatingthe mechanisms of sibling competition in relation to brood size. While under full parental compensation, the feeding rate pernestling will remain constant over all brood sizes for bothtypes of models; the scramble begging models alone predict anincrease in begging intensity with brood size, if begging costsdo not arise exclusively through predation. Great tit parentsadjusted feeding rates to brood size and fed nestlings at similarrates and with similar prey sizes in all three brood-size categories.Despite full parental compensation, the begging and food solicitationactivities increased with experimental brood size, whereas nestlingbody condition deteriorated. These findings support a scramblecomponent in begging and suggest that the competition-inducedcosts of food solicitation behavior play an important role inthe evolution of parent-offspring communication.  相似文献

Major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) genes are frequently used as a model for adaptive genetic diversity. Although associations between Mhc and disease resistance are frequently documented, little is known about the fitness consequences of Mhc variation in wild populations. Further, most work to date has involved testing associations between Mhc genotypes and fitness components. However, the functional diversity of the Mhc, and hence the mechanism by which selection on Mhc acts, depends on how genotypes map to the functional properties of Mhc molecules. Here, we test three hypotheses that relate Mhc diversity to fitness: (i) the maximal diversity hypothesis, (ii) the optimal diversity hypothesis and (iii) effect of specific Mhc types. We combine mark–recapture methods with analysis of long‐term breeding data to investigate the effects of Mhc class I functional diversity (Mhc supertypes) on individual fitness in a wild great tit (Parus major) population. We found that the presence of three different Mhc supertypes was associated with three different components of individual fitness: survival, annual recruitment and lifetime reproductive success (LRS). Great tits possessing Mhc supertype 3 experienced higher survival rates than those that did not, whereas individuals with Mhc supertype 6 experienced higher LRS and were more likely to recruit offspring each year. Conversely, great tits that possessed Mhc supertype 5 had reduced LRS. We found no evidence for a selective advantage of Mhc diversity, in terms of either maximal or optimal supertype diversity. Our results support the suggestion that specific Mhc types are an important determinant of individual fitness.  相似文献

Genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) are regarded as a potentially important target of mate choice due to the fitness benefits that may be conferred to the offspring. According to the complementary genes hypothesis, females mate with MHC dissimilar males to enhance the immunocompetence of their offspring or to avoid inbreeding depression. Here, we investigate whether selection favours a preference for maximally dissimilar or optimally dissimilar MHC class I types, based on MHC genotypes, average amino acid distances and the functional properties of the antigen‐binding sites (MHC supertypes); and whether MHC type dissimilarity predicts relatedness between mates in a wild great tit population. In particular, we explore the role that MHC class I plays in female mate choice decisions while controlling for relatedness and spatial population structure, and examine the reproductive fitness consequences of MHC compatibility between mates. We find no evidence for the hypotheses that females select mates on the basis of either maximal or optimal MHC class I dissimilarity. A weak correlation between MHC supertype sharing and relatedness suggests that MHC dissimilarity at functional variants may not provide an effective index of relatedness. Moreover, the reproductive success of pairs did not vary with MHC dissimilarity. Our results provide no support for the suggestion that selection favours, or that mate choice realizes, a preference for complimentary MHC types.  相似文献

Many vertebrates use carotenoid-based signals in social or sexual interactions. Honest signalling via carotenoids implies some limitation of carotenoid-based colour expression among phenotypes in the wild, and at least five limiting proximate mechanisms have been hypothesized. Limitation may arise by carotenoid-availability, genetic constraints, body condition, parasites, or detrimental effects of carotenoids. An understanding of the relative importance of the five mechanisms is relevant in the context of natural and sexual selection acting on signal evolution. In an experimental field study with carotenoid supplementation, simultaneous cross-fostering, manipulation of brood size and ectoparasite load, we investigated the relative importance of these mechanisms for the variation in carotenoid-based coloration of nestling great tits (Parus major). Carotenoid-based plumage coloration was significantly related to genetic origin of nestlings, and was enhanced both in carotenoid-supplemented nestlings, and nestlings raised in reduced broods. We found a tendency for ectoparasite-induced limitation of colour expression and no evidence for detrimental effects of carotenoids on growth pattern, mortality and recruitment of nestlings to the local breeding population. Thus, three of the five proposed mechanisms can generate individual variation in the expression of carotenoid-based plumage coloration in the wild and thus could maintain honesty in a trait potentially used for signalling of individual quality.  相似文献

Ectoparasites are common in most bird species, but experimentalevidence of their effects on life-history traits is scarce. We investigated experimentally the effects of the hematophagoushen flea (Ceratophyllus gallinae) on timing of reproduction,nest-site choice, nest desertion, clutch size, and hatchingsuccess in the great tit (Parus major). When great tits wereoffered a choice on their territory between an infested anda parasite-free nest-box, they chose the one without parasites. When there was no choice, the great tits in a territory containingan infested nest-box delayed laying the clutch by 11 days ascompared with the birds that were offered a parasite-free nestingopportunity. The finding that there was no difference in phenotypictraits related to dominance between the birds nesting in infestedboxes and birds nesting in parasite-free boxes suggests thatthe delay is not imposed by social dominance. Nest desertionbetween laying and shortly after hatching was significandy higherin infested nests. There was no difference between infestedand parasite-free nests in clutch size, but hatching successand hence brood size at hatching were significantly smallerin infested nests. Nest-box studies of great tits have beenseminal in the development of evolutionary, ecological, andbehavioral theory, but recently a polemic has arisen in theliterature about the validity of the conclusions drawn fromnest-box studies where the naturally occurring, detrimentalectoparasites are eliminated by the routine removal of old nestsbetween breeding seasons. Our study suggests that this criticismis valid and that the evaluation of the effects of ectoparasitesmay improve our understanding of behavioral traits, life-historytraits, or population dynamics  相似文献

In 1993 and 1994 we determined the frequency of extrapair paternityin broods of great tits, Parus major using multilocus DNA fingerprinting. We found no instances of intraspecific brood parasitism, but40% of broods (31/78) contained extrapair-fathered young and83% of offspring (58/681) were xtrapair We identified the geneticfathers of 60% of the extrapair nestlings (35/ 58). Males withfull and lost paternity did not differ significantly in traitsthat have been suggested to indicate male quality, nor did thegenetic and social fathers of extrapair offspring. In 1993,cuckolded males sired more offspring that recruited to the subsequentbreeding season than males with full paternity. Moreover, eventhough genetic fathers of extrapair young (EPY) sired more fledglingsthan the males they cuckolded, genetic and social fathers ofEPY did not differ in the number of recruits sired. Also, theEPY of a brood did not survive better than their half sibs. Thus, our results do not supportthe hypothesis that femaleschoose better quality males for extrapair matings ("good genes"hypothesis). Further, the level of extrapair paternity differedmarkedly between the two years. Our data show that females areconstrained in their extrapair activities by the availabilityof extrapair mates. This is at least partly due to yearly differencesin breeding synchrony.  相似文献

The role of the vitamin D-induced calcium binding protein termed calbindin-D (CaBP) in the biological response to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 was assessed by photoaffinity labeling techniques. The heterobifunctional cross-linking reagent methyl-4-azidobenzoimidate was employed for studies with the 28 KD chick intestinal calbindin-D28K. Calcium-dependent interactions were evident with purified chick intestinal CaBP-immunoglobulins and bovine intestinal alkaline phosphatase; in the absence of Ca2+ there was a greatly diminished crosslinking process. There were also at least two membrane components of chick intestinal brush border membranes, with MR = 60,000 and 130,000, which were photoaffinity cross-linked with CaBP in a calcium-dependent manner. Similar interactions were demonstrated following incubations of CaBP with phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C (PI-PLC)-treated supernatant fractions from chick intestinal brush borders. PI-PLC was shown to release 14% of the alkaline phosphatase from chick intestinal brush borders compared to greater than 80% for rabbit and chick kidney BBM preparations. Specific interactions between CaBP and brush border membrane proteins could also be demonstrated in the absence of photoaffinity labeling by Sephadex G-150 chromatography of Triton X-100 solubilized incubations between calbindin-D28K and chick intestinal BBMS, with 17% of the radiolabelled CaBP comigrating with alkaline phosphatase activity. These studies collectively demonstrate that calbindin-D28K undergoes calcium-dependent conformational changes which alter its subsequent interactions with cellular proteins in a way consistent with other calcium-binding proteins such as calmodulin or troponin C.  相似文献

The periodontal ligament (PDL) is a specialized, mechanically responsive tissue that adapts via cellular responses to equilibrate the effects of mechanical stress on teeth. However, the mechanism of remodelling by which individual cells in periodontal tissue detect and respond to mechanical stress is not well understood. To identify the cellular mechanisms induced by mechanical stress in the periodontal ligament, we examined the effects of cyclic stretching on periodontal ligament fibroblast-like cells (PDL cells). Furthermore, we investigated the effects of 1alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) (1,25(OH)(2)D(3)), and interaction with peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) on mechanically-simulated PDL cells. PDL cells were cultured on type I collagen-coated silicon membranes with 10% FBS alpha-MEM, and then subjected to cyclic mechanical stimulation (1 s stretching/1 s relaxation, 15% maximum elongation). Alkaline phosphatase activity was monitored by cytochemical and spectrophotometric methods. Morphologically, the cells assumed a spindle shape, and the cytoskeletal components, including microtubules and F-actin filaments, were aligned perpendicular to the strain force vector. Cyclic stretching decreased ALPase activity in PDL cells. The anabolic systemic hormone 1,25(OH)(2)D(3) increased ALPase activity, but this effect was suppressed by cyclic stretching. ALPase activities were reduced by co-culture with PBMCs, including lymphocytes and monocytes. This PBMC-induced ALPase reduction was synergistically reduced by cyclic stretching. ALPase activity was decreased by co-culture with PBMCs, and ALPase activity was reduced synergistically by treatment with PBMCs and cyclic stretching. We conclude that PDL cells changed their shape and alignment in response to cyclic stretching. Furthermore, local factors, such as mechanical stress and PBMCs, showed synergistic suppressive effects on ALPase activity.  相似文献

We examined the contractile reactivity to 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in isolated human saphenous vein (SV), as a vascular conduit in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), harvested from patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and non-DM (NDM). Vascular rings of endothelium-denuded SV were used for functional and biochemical experiments. The vasoconstrictions caused by 5-HT were significantly greater (hyperreactivity) in the DM group than in the NDM group. RhoA/ROCK pathway is activated by various G-protein-coupled receptor agonists and consequently induces phosphorylation of myosin phosphatase target subunit 1 (MYPT1), a subunit of myosin light chain phosphatase (MLCP), which inhibits MLCP activity. In the resting state of the vessels, total tissue protein levels of 5-HT2A receptor, 5-HT1B receptor, RhoA, ROCK1, and ROCK2 did not differ between NDM and DM groups. However, the total protein level of MYPT1 was significantly lower in the DM group than in the NDM group. Furthermore, the ratio of P(Thr696)-MYPT1 to total MYPT1 was significantly higher in the DM group than in the NDM group. These results suggest that the hyperreactivity to 5-HT in the SV smooth muscle of patients with DM is due to not only enhanced phosphorylation of MLCP but also defective protein level of MLCP. Thus, we reveal for the first time that the defective protein level of MLCP in the DM group can partially explain the poor patency of SV graft harvested from patients with DM.  相似文献

Neuronal growth inhibitory factor (GIF) is a small cysteine-rich metal binding protein downregulated in Alzheimer's disease. The protein belongs to the superfamily of metallothioneins (MTs) and was classified as MT-3. Although first identified as a brain specific protein, several reports now indicate a substantially broader expression pattern. However, currently available detection methods for MT-3 show low sensitivity in gel electrophoresis and Western blot. We have developed a fast and sensitive method for MT-3 detection in SDS-PAGE (detection limit approximately 10 ng) and Western blot (detection limit approximately 1 ng). The method is based on the chemical modification of cysteine residues with the dye monobromobimane and an improved blotting protocol.  相似文献
