The forty years of medical genetics in China

Medical genetics is the newest cutting-edge discipline that focuses on solving medical problems using genetics knowledge and methods. In China, medical genetics research activities initiated from a poor inner basis but a prosperous outer environment. During the 40 years of reform and opening-up policy, Chinese scientists contributed significantly in the field of medical genetics, garnering considerable attention worldwide. In this review, we highlight the significant findings and/or results discovered by Chinese scientists in monogenic diseases, complex diseases, cancer, genetic diagnosis, as well as gene manipulation and gene therapy. Due to these achievements, China is widely recognized to be at the forefront of medical genetics research and development. However, the significant progress and development that has been achieved could not have been accomplished without sufficient funding and a well-constructed logistics network. The successful implementation of translational and precise medicine sourced from medical genetics will depend on an open ethics policy and intellectual property protection, along with strong support at the national industry level.     

Mise en place d’une équipe d’experts en physique médicale au Luxembourg : organisation, résultats qualité et radioprotection en médecine nucléaire (2002–2011)

Implementations of the statutory UE requirements concerning ionizing radiation in the medical domain (96/29/Euratom, 13th May 1996; 97/43/Euratom, 30th June 1997) have changed quality control in medical imaging departments. In Luxembourg, the Ministry of Health and the “Union of Luxembourg Hospitals” have thus created a “Medical Physics Cell” (five Medical Physics experts). It is in charge of implementing a standardized program of Quality Assurance (QA) and radiation protection relative to patients as well as staffs, on a coordinated national basis, in all five in-hospital nuclear medicine departments of the country. The program distributes QA controls between three levels, various periodicities and degrees of expertise. It sensitizes staff and medical doctors by trainings and facilitates ISO accreditation. From 2002 to 2011, in all five in-hospital departments of nuclear medicine of a small country, image quality, radiation protection and reference values of each medical equipment were defined and implemented in a standard way. In 2011, the medical physics cell, the driving force leading to the institutionalization of the discipline within the nuclear medicine departments, is considered as a partner rather than as a control body by the teams in charge of the nuclear medicine departments.     

Mild manifestations of COVID-19 in healthcare workers

Medical staff treating Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients are at high risk for exposure to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and many have been infected, which may cause panic among medical workers, their relatives, health professionals, and government leaders. We report the epidemiologic and clinical characteristics of healthcare workers and that the majority of infected medical staff had milder symptoms/conditions with a better prognosis than admitted patients. Timely improvement to medical staff’s working conditions such as allowing adequate rest and providing sufficient medical protection is extremely important.

MEDICAL CARE AND PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICES

Medical care applies to the individual, and public health to the community. One is the concentrated application of diagnosis and treatment for the life, the comfort of a patient, and includes guidance in health as for motherhood, infancy, childhood and old age.Public health services, provided by the community through its local government and the local department of health, are concerned with the prevention of diseases of all kinds. Some are controlled by sanitary authority, but the majority of preventable diseases are dealt with by public health education.It is not the function of the health department to treat the sick. The family physicians, the hospitals and dispensaries provide for medical care. Medical care of the sick and public health protection are two parallel activities to make use of medical science, one for treatment, the other for prevention of disease.     

Mesure de l’exposition externe du personnel du service de médecine nucléaire de l’hôpital Ibn Sina de Rabat au cours de la manipulation des radiopharmaceutiques

The nuclear medicine department of Ibn Sina hospital was created in 1965. Its first location was in radiology department, and then it was transferred in 1977 to the old emergency unit. The conception was not originally dedicated for a nuclear medicine department. To reassure the medical staff about their exposition during radiopharmaceutical manipulation, a dosimetric study was performed in collaboration with the National center of radiation protection (CNRP). Dosimetric monitoring was conducted for 3 months with the use of passive thermoluminescent dosimeters, (Harshow, 6600 plus), covering all categories of staff. The administration of 153 Samarium has been also studied. Other cases of people concerned our study: a pregnant woman doctor, whose exposure of the unborn child must be reduced as much as possible, and a woman from a private company, working occasionally in the department. To control the conditions imposed on all activities requiring exposure to ionizing radiation, we evaluated the dose at the extremities of operators with the use of ring dosimeters (Harshow 6600 plus) and the dose on the ambient environment of staff. This experiment has shown exposure levels below legal limits, without been negligible for some workstations. Technicians equivalent doses results justify the wearing of dosimeter rings as a complementary dosimeter in nuclear medicine department. Finally, monitoring ambient dosimetry showed that the environment measurements are in keeping with national and international norms. The Medical staff was very interested by this study, which demonstrates that radiation protection standards are respected through awareness, basic training, continuing education and information. The first author is particularly involved in the practical procedures in order to respect radiation protection recommendations for restraining staff annual chest and extremities dosimetry figures within regulations values.     

Commentary: moral growth in medical students

Knight has shown how the moral growth of medical students involves a spiritual journey. He may, however, present too sanguine a portrayal of the extent to which the medical education environment promotes this moral and spiritual growth. Medical school may indeed be more abusive than supportive. Admitting more women to medical school and teaching more humanities courses, while worthwhile, will not necessarily promote the goals that Knight appropriately advocates.     

Meeting the international standard ISO 9002/BS5750

In this paper we outline the rationale for applying British Standard BS5750 to a medical equipment management service and introduce some of the concepts of the standard as they apply to this field. We see this application as essential in today's legal and commercial environment and indicate the ways in which this work is being carried forward by the Medical Equipment Management Organisation into total quality management systems.     

Space Medicine—A Review of Current Concepts

Space medicine deals with the branch of research involved with the adaptation of humans to the unique environment of space. More than 100 people have traveled in space. The day will come when some human beings will spend all their time in space. Medical problems encountered in space, such as motion sickness, negative nitrogen and calcium balance, anemia and radiation exposure, are issues that already affect medical practice outside aerospace medicine.

Nuclear and radiological emergencies: Building capacity in medical physics to support response

Medical physicists represent a valuable asset at the disposal of a structured and planned response to nuclear or radiological emergencies (NREs), especially in the hospital environment. The recognition of this fact led the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP) to start a fruitful collaboration aiming to improve education and training of medical physicists so that they may support response efforts in case of NREs. Existing shortcomings in specific technical areas were identified through international consultations supported by the IAEA and led to the development of a project aiming at preparing a specific and standardized training package for medical physicists in support to NREs. The Project was funded through extra-budgetary contribution from Japan within the IAEA Nuclear Safety Action Plan. This paper presents the work accomplished through that project and describes the current steps and future direction for enabling medical physicists to better support response to NREs.     

Ethics,jurisprudence, and economics in the medical school curriculum.

Medical ethics, medical jurisprudence, and medical economics are recognized as important components of a medical school curriculum. These subjects were introduced through a course given at the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine. Four aspects of the format and content of the course were instrumental to its success. Teaching principles of medical ethics within the context of jurisprudence and economics permitted the students to gain an understanding of the institutions and processes that act as positive and negative constraints on physicians'' clinical and professional behavior. The course was offered during the fourth year following required clinical rotations so that all aspects of the course could be based on the clinical experiences of the students. It was presented in a continuing medical education format away from the normal teaching environment of first- and second-year classrooms and third-year clerkships. Finally, the course was designed by a multidisciplinary, multidepartmental planning group that included students.     

Medical Geology: Emerging Discipline on the Ecosystem–Human Health Interface

Medical geology is an emerging discipline that, broadly defined, examines the public health impacts of geologic materials and geologic processes. The scope and range of medical geology include: (1) identifying and characterizing natural and anthropogenic sources of harmful materials in the environment; (2) learning how to predict the movement and alteration of chemical, infectious, and other disease-causing agents over time and space; and (3) understanding how people are exposed to such materials and what can be done to minimize or prevent such exposure. Participants of a Medical Geology Working Group that met recently in Washington, DC, identified lessons learned to date in the development of this new field, noted research gaps that should be addressed, and recommended key priorities and directions for a sustainable future for medical geology.     

Enhancing the impact of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine: A joint AIFM-INFN Italian initiative for a dedicated cloud-based computing infrastructure

Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques have been implemented in the field of Medical Imaging for more than forty years. Medical Physicists, Clinicians and Computer Scientists have been collaborating since the beginning to realize software solutions to enhance the informative content of medical images, including AI-based support systems for image interpretation. Despite the recent massive progress in this field due to the current emphasis on Radiomics, Machine Learning and Deep Learning, there are still some barriers to overcome before these tools are fully integrated into the clinical workflows to finally enable a precision medicine approach to patients’ care. Nowadays, as Medical Imaging has entered the Big Data era, innovative solutions to efficiently deal with huge amounts of data and to exploit large and distributed computing resources are urgently needed. In the framework of a collaboration agreement between the Italian Association of Medical Physicists (AIFM) and the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), we propose a model of an intensive computing infrastructure, especially suited for training AI models, equipped with secure storage systems, compliant with data protection regulation, which will accelerate the development and extensive validation of AI-based solutions in the Medical Imaging field of research. This solution can be developed and made operational by Physicists and Computer Scientists working on complementary fields of research in Physics, such as High Energy Physics and Medical Physics, who have all the necessary skills to tailor the AI-technology to the needs of the Medical Imaging community and to shorten the pathway towards the clinical applicability of AI-based decision support systems.     

我军某部赴利比里亚维和某部疾病构成及防治

目的：调查我维和部队官兵的疾病构成,从而探讨防治对策。方法：军医实行24小时值班制度,1周轮换。就诊官兵均按症状、体征进行临床诊断并实时登记。结果：感染性疾病、皮肤病、腰腿痛、胃炎、痔等5类疾病所占比例已经超过95%,而原来以为与军事行动关系较大的外伤、与热带环境工作相关的中暑倒处于一个较为次要的位置。结论：自我国派成建制的部队参加国际维和任务以来,所赴地区主要为热带或亚热带,各部队所处环境相似,各自的疾病防治经验可资借鉴。     

Ethical inspection about laboratory animals

Laboratory animals and animal experiments are foundations and important support conditions for life sciences, especially for medical research. The animal experiments have drawn extensive attention from the society because of the ethical issue. This paper takes Wenzhou Medical University as an example to give a brief introduction to the ethical review about laboratory animals in the university so as to further draw attention and concerns from the public about the ethical issue of laboratory animals. We successively introduce its scientific projects, nurturing environment and ethical review of laboratory animals.     

European Federation of Organisations for Medical Physics (EFOMP) Policy Statement 12.1: Recommendations on Medical Physics Education and Training in Europe 2014

In 2010, EFOMP issued Policy Statement No. 12: “The present status of Medical Physics Education and Training in Europe. New perspectives and EFOMP recommendations” to be applied to education and training in Medical Physics within the context of the developments in the European Higher Education Area arising from the Bologna Declaration and with a view to facilitate the free movement of Medical Physics professionals within Europe. Concurrently, new recommendations regarding qualifications frameworks were published by the European Parliament and Council which introduced new terminology and a new qualifications framework – the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) for lifelong learning. In addition, a new European directive involving the medical use of ionizing radiations and set to replace previous directives in this area was in the process of development. This has now been realized as Council Directive 2013/59/Euratom of 5 December 2013 which has repealed directive 97/43/Euratom. In this regard, a new document was developed in the context of the EC financed project "European Guidelines on the Medical Physics Expert" and published as RP174. Among other items, these guidelines refer to the mission statement, key activities, qualification framework and curricula for the specialty areas of Medical Physics relating to radiological devices and protection from ionizing radiation. These developments have made necessary an update of PS12; this policy statement provides the necessary update.     

医疗损害鉴定制度的改革与发展

医疗损害指因医疗机构及其医务人员的故意或过失（即医疗过错）,造成就医患者身体上或精神上的损害结果。医疗损害鉴定是指医疗机构及其医务人员在日常医疗行为中存在法定过错并造成患者人身损害而导致的医疗损害民事诉讼,人民法院针对医疗技术的高风险、高技术等问题对外委托的鉴定。其内容主要针对医疗行为整个过程的审查和分析,对照卫生行政法规、部门规章诊疗护理规范及常规,判定医师有无过错,医疗过错行为与损害结果之间是否存在因果关系,医疗过错行为在损害结果中的责任程度以及人体损伤残疾程度等方面。     

野生水芹的合理开发利用

主要阐述了野生水芹的药用、食用价值及其急待开发的环保作用。随着人们生活水平的不断提高,野生水芹以其特有的集治病和健身于一体的功能被越来越多的人所喜爱。针对目前日渐严重的湿地污染,可以利用野生水芹其极强的生命力和较广的适应能力的特性,进行综合环境治理。     

Sanitary-epidemiological situation in town Verkhnyaya Pyshma in 2006

Information on medical and demographic as well as sanitary-epidemiologic situation in town Verkhnyaya Pyshma is presented. The town belongs to group of territories with unfavourable ecologic situation. It was shown that social, economical, and sanitary-hygienic factors influence on public health. Priority pollutants of environment and indicators of public health are presented. For solving problems of protection of public health, ensuring the sanitary-epidemiologic welfare and ecologic safety in modern conditions, more effective, accessible, and economical mechanisms of management of environment and public health should be introduced with respect to action of factors of economical and social development of municipality as well as to realization of national projects.
