Forest passerine birds and their ectoparasites: Ixodes ricinus ticks and Syringophilidae quill mites were surveyed for infection with Anaplasma phagocytophilum in west-central Poland. Of 126 birds captured from May to June of 2002, 71 (56.3%) comprising eight species, hosted immature I. ricinus ticks. A total of 383 ticks and 71 blood samples collected from tick-infested birds were investigated by PCR. The pathogen was not detected in either bird-derived ticks or in blood samples. Among the captured birds, a total of 14 individuals representing four species hosted quill mites from the family Syringophilidae. Three of the 14 mite pools recovered from the 14 mite-infested birds harbored A. phagocytophilum DNA by amplifying both the epank1 and p44 gene. The PCR-positive pools originated from one blackbird and two starlings. The specific biology of syringophilid mites, which parasitize exclusively inside the quill of feathers, feeding on host subcutaneous fluids, implies that they must have acquired the pathogen from a bacteremic bird. These results provide the first indirect evidence that at least some passerine hosts are prone to develop systemic infection with A. phagocytophilum under natural conditions. Consequently, the infected quill mites may serve as a "biological marker" of past or current infection with the agent within birds.  相似文献

The effect of some ecological factors on the infection of birds with blood Protozoa was studied. Most favourable conditions for circulation of Haemoproteidae on the Kurish Spit were recorded in July. The possibility of the infection of young small passerine birds from the first broods with Haemoproteidae is most high first of all at the expense of their longer stay in the nesting territory in the period of the active transport of parasites. The presence of Leucocytozoidae in Kurish populations is explained mainly by the distribution of birds. The registration of Leucocytozoidae from birds on the Kurish Spit in spring and autumn is the result of the flight of extensively infected northern populations. It is noted that a constant change in the populational composition of the ornithofauna during seasonal migrations should be taken into account when studying the parasites of wild birds. Otherwise the characteristic features of the circulation of parasites in the region in question can be distorted as a result of the overlap of data on the infection of birds of different populations. The dependence of the infection on sex and size of birds--hosts and the role of the nesting period in the distribution of some Haemosporidia are analysed.  相似文献

Seasonal parameters of infection by the nematode Contracaecum rudolphii in the Neotropic cormorant Phalacrocorax brasilianus (Phalacrocoracidae) and their relation with feeding and infection in fishes from River Valdivia, Chile, were determined. The prevalences of infection in birds were similar during seasons, whereas mean intensity and percentages of adult gravid females were higher in spring and summer, respectively. For fishes no seasonal differences were found in infection. Cormorant diet varied seasonally in relation to fish prey consumed and this can be related to seasonal differences in infection parameters of birds. The high infection in birds should be considered as a potential risk for salmoniculture.  相似文献

Species of Philophthalmus parasitize primarily the eyes of wild and domestic birds. A variety of mammals, including humans, occasionally serve as the intermediate as well as the definitive hosts for this parasite, although human cases are extremely rare. Here, we report a case of human conjunctivitis caused by an infection with Philophthalmus sp. in Mexico. The patient was a 31-yr-old male who visited an ophthalmologist in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico, because of a foreign-body sensation in his left eye for 2 mo. A small live parasite was found in the connective tissue of the bulbar conjunctiva and was removed surgically under local anesthesia under ophthalmoscopic observation. The parasite was identified morphologically as Philophthalmus lacrimosus Braun, 1902. This is the first case of human philophthalmosis in Mexico and, to our knowledge, the first human case of P. lacrimosus infection in the world.  相似文献

Occasional screening of food and water quality available to organisms in protected areas could be beneficial to their successful conservation. This is important for areas receiving regular human visitors and exhibiting activities that may be detrimental to ecosystem health. This study determined the intestinal protozoan species harboured by insectivorous and granivorous birds within the Jos Wildlife Park, Nigeria and whether the two avian feeding guilds are more susceptible to protozoan infection through water or food (grass seeds and insects). Special boxes were used to collect faecal samples from trapped birds. Samples were later analysed in the laboratory for protozoans. Both food and water utilised by the birds in the area were microscopically screened. The composition and abundance of intestinal protozoans between the two feeding guilds did not show significant differences. However, considering parasite species individually, the degree of infection by protozoans such as Giardia lamblia was highly related to the range of infection sources that a feeding guild was exposed to. The composition of parasites observed in the two feeding guilds was strongly linked to both water bodies and avian diet obtainable in the Park. These observations showed that birds in the Park are orally susceptible to infection with protozoans, some of which have been reported to cause health implications in birds. Thus, any measure to curtail environmental contamination by the parasites may improve ecosystem health and survival of avian species in the Park.  相似文献

This study of infection of southern Australian land snails with Brachylaima cribbi metacercariae has shown that all commonly encountered native and introduced snails are susceptible second intermediate hosts. The range of infected snails is extensive with metacercariae-infected snails being present in all districts across southern Australia. C. virgata has the highest average natural metacercarial infection intensity of 6.1 metacercariae per infected snail. The susceptibility of birds, mammals and reptiles to B. cribbi infection was studied in South Australia by capturing, dissecting and examining the intestinal tract contents of animals which commonly eat land snails as a food source. Indigenous Australian little ravens (Corvus mellori), which are a common scavenger bird, and two other passeriform birds, the black bird (Turdus merula) and the starling (Sturnus vulgaris), which are both introduced European birds, were found to have the highest infection rates of all animals examined. Other birds found infected with B. cribbi were an emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae), chickens (Gallus gallus) and a pigeon (Columba livia). Natural infections were also detected in field mice (Mus domesticus) and shingleback lizards (Tiliqua rugosa) although the intensity of infection was lower than that observed in birds. Susceptibility studies of laboratory mice, rats and ducks showed that mice developed patent infections which persisted for several weeks, rats developed a short-lived infection of three weeks' duration and ducks did not support infection. This study has shown for the first time that a brachylaimid can infect a wide host range of birds, mammals and reptiles in nature.  相似文献

Parasites are known to exert strong selection pressures on their hosts and, as such, favour the evolution of defence mechanisms. The negative impact of parasites on their host can have substantial consequences in terms of population persistence and the epidemiology of the infection. In natural populations, however, it is difficult to assess the cost of infection while controlling for other potentially confounding factors. For instance, individuals are repeatedly exposed to a variety of parasite strains, some of which can elicit immunological memory, further protecting the host from subsequent infections. Cost of infection is, therefore, expected to be particularly strong for primary infections and to decrease for individuals surviving the first infectious episode that are re-exposed to the pathogen. We tested this hypothesis experimentally using avian malaria parasites (Plasmodium relictum-lineage SGS1) and domestic canaries (Serinus canaria) as a model. Hosts were infected with a controlled dose of P. relictum as a primary infection and control birds were injected with non-infected blood. The changes in haematocrit and body mass were monitored during a 20 day period. A protein of the acute phase response (haptoglobin) was assessed as a marker of the inflammatory response mounted in response to the infection. Parasite intensity was also monitored. Surviving birds were then re-infected 37 days post primary infection. In agreement with the predictions, we found that primary infected birds paid a substantially higher cost in terms of infection-induced reduction in haematocrit compared with re-exposed birds. After the secondary infection, re-exposed hosts were also able to clear the infection at a faster rate than after the primary infection. These results have potential consequences for the epidemiology of avian malaria, since birds re-exposed to the pathogen can maintain parasitemia with low fitness costs, allowing the persistence of the pathogen within the host population.  相似文献

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are a critical component of the innate immune response in many vertebrates, including avian species. The recent findings of chicken TLRs (cTLRs) expression in ovarian follicles and in the chicken ovary in vivo, as well as the changes in their expression in response to lipopolysaccharide or Salmonella enteritidis (SE) infection, have broad implications for reproductive physiology and for the prevention of transmission of zoonotic diseases to humans through the consumption of contaminated poultry eggs. Because the main route of egg contamination is from infection of the oviduct and mainly from the vagina, the aim of this study was to investigate the expression of the ten cTLRs identified to date in the chicken oviduct in vivo, to determine whether sexual maturation affects their mRNA abundance and to investigate whether SE infection alters the expression of TLRs in the chicken vagina. RNA was extracted from the vagina of healthy prepubertal, sexually mature and aged birds, and from sexually mature and aged SE infected birds. RT-PCR analysis revealed that all types of cTLRs apart from TLR1-1 were expressed in the vagina of sexually mature birds. Quantitative real-time PCR analysis revealed that the mRNA abundance of TLR2-1, 2-2 and 4 differ with respect to sexual maturation in the chicken vagina. SE infection resulted in a significant induction of TLR5 and 15 in the vagina of sexually mature birds, and in a significant induction of TLR2-1, 4 and 15 in the vagina of aged birds, while a significant down-regulation was observed for TLR7 in the vagina of sexually mature birds. These findings suggest that a TLR mediated immune response mechanism exists in the chicken vagina, playing a crucial role in preventing microbial pathogens from being incorporated into newly forming eggs.  相似文献

Chaffinches, infected with hemoproteids (Haemoproteidae) and leucocytozoids (Leucocytozoidae), are uniformly distributed in the ranges of each nonequivalent from the point of view of bioenergetics migratory wave. Extensiveness of infection of birds with leucocytozoids in autumn increases reliably at the time of late migratory waves as compared to early ones. The last flight wave, which is observed in the Kurskaya Kosa in the second half of October, consists, in general, of chaffinches which have already gone through the leucocytozoonosis. Concentration of infected birds at the end of the species migration flow can be regarded as a peculiar parasitic filter delaying the birds, which have been seriously ill, from flying away to wintering places at the most favourable periods. The thesis on different influence of hemosporidians on energetic balance of birds during spring and autumn migrations is substantiated. Hypothesis has been advanced on the causal relationship between high bird mortality during spring migration and the most high extensiveness and intensity of their infection with hemosporidians.  相似文献

Naturally occurring infections with Toxoplasma have been sought in several species of wild birds, and one case has been found in a locally caught pigeon—the first known demonstration of toxoplasmosis of the mammalian type in birds in eastern North America. Experimental infections with a strain of Toxoplasma of human origin have been studied in pigeons, song sparrows, grackles, and chickens. Some of the birds became acutely ill and died within a few days or a week; others became chronically ill and exhibited no symptoms during the period of observation which, for certain birds, lasted more than 6 months. There was no indication that the parasites were in any way modified by such prolonged exposure to conditions in the avian host, except where chicks were experimentally employed. In the latter case, there was a definite indication of lessened virulence after twenty serial passages.Grackles with experimental infections exhibited an easily demonstrable parasitemia for at least as long as 5 days, during which as little as 0.1 ml of their blood was infective to mice. Two young pigeons, fed for 2 weeks by a mother with an acute case of toxoplasmosis, failed to become infected, but proved susceptible when later inoculated with parasites. They developed a chronic infection, characterized by a rise of antibodies in much the same fashion as in mammals having the disease. The antibody curve remained high for the entire period of observation (6 months).Mouse brains from experimentally induced cases of toxoplasmosis remained infective for as long as 18 days when stored in an ordinary electric refrigerator and immersed in sterile Difco skim milk. Exposure to higher temperatures however showed that 55 °C for 5 minutes is lethal to the parasite, and that in some cases they are no longer viable after an exposure of equal duration to 50 °C.

Animal movements may contribute to the spread of pathogens. In the case of avian influenza virus, [migratory] birds have been suggested to play a role in the spread of some highly pathogenic strains (e.g. H5N1, H5N8), as well as their low pathogenic precursors which circulate naturally in wild birds. For a better understanding of the emergence and spread of both highly pathogenic (HPAIV) and low pathogenic avian influenza virus (LPAIV), the potential effects of LPAIVs on bird movement need to be evaluated. In a key host species, the mallard Anas platyrhynchos, we tested whether LPAIV infection status affected daily local (< 100 m) and regional (> 100 m) movements by comparing movement behaviour 1) within individuals (captured and sampled at two time points) and 2) between individuals (captured and sampled at one time point). We fitted free‐living adult males with GPS loggers throughout the autumn LPAIV infection peak, and sampled them for LPAIV infection at logger deployment and at logger removal on recapture. Within individuals, we found no association between LPAIV infection and daily local and regional movements. Among individuals, daily regional movements of LPAIV infected mallards in the last days of tracking were lower than those of non‐infected birds. Moreover, these regional movements of LPAIV infected birds were additionally reduced by poor weather conditions (i.e. increased wind and/or precipitation and lower temperatures). Local movements of LPAIV infected birds in the first days of tracking were higher when temperature decreased. Our study thus demonstrates that bird‐assisted dispersal rate of LPAIV may be lower on a regional scale than expected on the basis of the movement behaviour of non‐infected birds. Our study underlines the importance of understanding the impact of pathogen infection on host movement in order to assess its potential role in the emergence and spread of infectious diseases.  相似文献

Six of seven Hawaii Amakihi (Hemignathus virens) with chronic malarial infections had no increases in peripheral parasitemia, declines in food consumption, or loss of body weight when rechallenged with the homologous isolate of Plasmodium relictum 61 to 62 days after initial infection. Five uninfected control amakihi exposed at the same time to infective mosquito bites developed acute infections with high parasitemias. Reductions in food consumption and loss of body weight occurred in all control birds and three of these individuals eventually died. When surviving birds were rechallenged >2 yr later with either the same parasite isolate or an isolate of P. relictum collected on the island of Kauai, all individuals were immune to superinfection. Chronically infected birds developed antibodies to a common suite of malarial antigens ranging in size from 22 to 170 kDa that were detectable as early as 8 days post infection on immunoblots of SDS-polyacrylamide gels. Antibodies to this suite of malarial antigens persisted as long as 1,248 days after initial infection and were consistently detectable at times when parasites were not easily found by microscopy on Giemsa-stained blood smears. The immunoblotting method that is described here appears to be an effective technique for identifying birds with chronic, low-intensity malarial infections when circulating parasites are not easily detectable by microscopy. Hawaiian honeycreepers that are capable of recovering from acute infections develop concomitant immunity to superinfection, making them functionally immune in areas where malaria transmission has become endemic.  相似文献

In three cases of encephalitis in humans that occurred in the area where the newly described California virus was isolated from mosquitoes, serological evidence seemed to indict the California virus as the etiological agent. In the case of an infant with very severe disease, the serological evidence was convincing; the evidence was almost as strong in the case of a seven-year-old boy; the results in an adult were equivocal. Inapparent infection in man is quite common as indicated by neutralization tests on the sera of nearly 600 residents of California, but encephalitic manifestations of infection are extremely rare. In Kern County, California, where the virus was discovered, approximately 11 per cent of the population has been infected. Infection rates are higher in adults than in very young children. Absence of neutralizing antibodies from 64 specimens of blood from persons in Japan, Washington, and other states supports the specificity of the neutralization test in man and suggests that this virus is absent or is not being similarly transmitted in some areas. Serological evidence from serial bleedings of two sick horses suggested, but did not definitely establish, that this virus leads to a naturally acquired encephalomyelitis in horses. Serological tests with the viruses of western equine and St. Louis encephalitis did not lead to any other etiological diagnosis in the sick animals studied. Results of neutralization tests on the sera of eight horses and three cows in Kern County suggested extremely high infection rates, and an immunity rate of 18 per cent was noted in rabbits and ground squirrels. In the natural biological cycle rabbits and ground squirrels are suspected as the possible counterpart of birds in the St. Louis and western equine virus cycles. There is no evidence from field or laboratory to indicate that birds become infected with the California virus. Sera from 33 mammals other than man were collected from Northern California and Washington. All were free from neutralizing antibodies, again supporting the specificity of positive findings from Kern County.  相似文献

Migrating waterfowl are implicated in the global spread of influenza A viruses (IAVs), and mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) are considered a particularly important IAV reservoir. Prevalence of IAV infection in waterfowl peaks during autumn pre-migration staging and then declines as birds reach wintering areas. Migration is energetically costly and birds often experience declines in body condition that may suppress immune function. We assessed how body condition affects susceptibility to infection, viral shedding and antibody production in wild-caught and captive-bred juvenile mallards challenged with low pathogenic avian influenza virus (LPAIV) H5N9. Wild mallards (n = 30) were separated into three experimental groups; each manipulated through food availability to a different condition level (−20%, −10%, and normal ±5% original body condition), and captive-bred mallards (n = 10) were maintained at normal condition. We found that wild mallards in normal condition were more susceptible to LPAIV infection, shed higher peak viral loads and shed viral RNA more frequently compared to birds in poor condition. Antibody production did not differ according to condition. We found that wild mallards did not differ from captive-bred mallards in viral intensity and duration of infection, but they did exhibit lower antibody titers and greater variation in viral load. Our findings suggest that reduced body condition negatively influences waterfowl host competence to LPAIV infection. This observation is contradictory to the recently proposed condition-dependent hypothesis, according to which birds in reduced condition would be more susceptible to IAV infection. The mechanisms responsible for reducing host competency among birds in poor condition remain unknown. Our research indicates body condition may influence the maintenance and spread of LPAIV by migrating waterfowl.  相似文献

The effects of oestrogen and progesterone on the re-excretion of IB virus strain G in chickens infected at day-old was evaluated in this study. Following infection of the chickens at day-old, the birds were swabbed regularly from the trachea and cloaca until no more virus was isolated from either site. Between 10 and 14 weeks of age oestrogen and progesterone were administered by intramuscular injection to infected or control chickens. An infected but non-hormone injected group was maintained. All the birds were monitored for virus re-excretion and/or increase in serum neutralising (SN) antibody levels during this period of treatment. Similar parameters, and the egg production of these birds were evaluated when they reached their natural sexual maturity. At the end of the experiment, the birds were sacrificed and their internal organs especially the reproductive organs were examined for any pathological lesions. The acute phase of the disease following infection at day-old was typical of IB virus infection in terms of clinical signs and virus excretions from trachea and cloaca [1]. The injected hormones failed to induce virus re-excretion as no virus was isolated during this period. There was no change in the level of antibody during this period either. However, when the hens attained their natural sexual maturity, IB virus was re-excreted by all the birds. Isolations was also more frequent from the cloaca than from the trachea. The SN antibody levels of individual showed no definite pattern to correspond with periods of re-excretion in the birds up to the end of the experiment. The control birds remained normal throughout the period of the study.  相似文献

Parasites can have detrimental effects on host fitness, and infection typically results in the stimulation of the immune system. While defending against infection, the immune system generates toxic oxidants; if these are not sufficiently counteracted by the antioxidant system, a state of oxidative stress can occur. Here, we investigated the relationship between parasitic infection-using malarial infection as a model-and oxidative status in a natural population of the Seychelles warbler, while taking into account potentially interacting environmental covariates. We found that malaria is associated with increased susceptibility to oxidative stress, but this depends on the breeding stage: only during the energetically demanding provisioning stage did infected birds have higher oxidative stress susceptibility than non-infected birds. The imbalance in oxidative status was caused by a marked increase in oxidant levels observed only in infected birds during provisioning and by an overall reduction in antioxidant capacity observed in all birds across the breeding cycle. This finding implies that higher workload while dealing with an infection could aggravate oxidative repercussions. Malarial infection was not associated with body condition loss, suggesting that even when conditional effects are not directly visible, detrimental effects may still manifest themselves over the longer term through the oxidative consequences.  相似文献
