Blidingia minima var. stolonifera var. nov. is described from Vancouver, British Columbia. In previous literature this variety may have been confused with B. chadefaudii and B. minima var. minima. The new variety is part of the B. minima species complex in which spores germinate by evacuating the original spore and forming a germ tube. B. minima var. stolonifera is characterized by the development of marginal filaments on the basal disc that have one to five colourless cells and terminate in a cell from which a new disc grows. Colourless cells are devoid of chloroplasts and nuclei, and contain only small remnants of cytoplasm. The runner system is considered a mechanism of vegetative growth and propagation that enables a disc to cover a large amount of substratum before producing erect, unbranched thalli. In field and in culture, B. minima var. stolonifera typically reproduces by means of quadriflagellate zoospores; however, three plants from Vancouver formed biflagellate spores. These germinated poorly and developed into highly irregular, branched thalli.  相似文献

Bivalves of the families Mytilidae, Unionidae, and Veneridae have an unusual mode of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) transmission called doubly uniparental inheritance (DUI). A characteristic feature of DUI is the presence of two gender-associated mtDNA genomes that are transmitted through males (M-type mtDNA) and females (F-type mtDNA), respectively. Female mussels are predominantly homoplasmic with only the F-type expressed in both somatic and gonadal tissue; males are heteroplasmic with the M-type expressed in the gonad and F-type in somatic tissue for the most part. An unusual evolutionary feature of this system is that an mt genome with F-coding sequences occasionally invades the male route of inheritance (i.e., a "role reversal" event), and is thereafter transmitted as a new M-type. Phylogenetic studies have demonstrated that the new or "recently masculinized" M-types may eventually replace the older or "standard" M-types over time. To investigate whether this replacement process could be due to an advantage in sperm swimming behavior, we measured differences in motility parameters and found that sperm with the recently masculinized M-type had significantly faster curvilinear velocity and average path velocity when compared to sperm with standard M-type. This increase in sperm swimming speed could explain the multiple evolutionary replacements of standard M-types by masculinized M-types that have been hypothesized for the mytilid lineage. However, our observations do not support the hypothesis that DUI originated because it permits the evolution of mitochondrial adaptations specific to sperm performance, otherwise, the evolutionarily older, standard M genome should perform better.  相似文献

Daily light exposure in morning-type and evening-type individuals   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Morning-type individuals (M-types) have earlier sleep schedules than do evening types (E-types) and therefore differ in their exposure to the external light-dark cycle. M-types and E-types usually differ in their endogenous circadian phase as well, but whether this is the cause or the consequence of the difference in light exposure remains controversial. In this study, ambulatory monitoring was used to measure 24-h light exposure in M-type and E-type subjects for 7 consecutive days. The circadian phase of each subject was then estimated in the laboratory using the dim-light melatonin onset in saliva (DLMO) and the core body temperature minimum (Tmin). On average, M-types had earlier sleep schedules and earlier circadian phases than E-types. They also showed more minutes of daily bright light exposure (> 1000 lux) than E-types. As expected, the 24-h patterns of light exposure analyzed in relation to clock time indicated that M-types were exposed to more light in the morning than E-types and that the reverse was true in the late evening. However, there was no significant difference when the light profiles were analyzed in relation to circadian phase, suggesting that, on average, the circadian pacemaker of both M-types and E-types was similarly entrained to the light-dark cycle they usually experience. Some M-types and E-types had different sleep schedules but similar circadian phases. These subjects also had identical light profiles in relation to their circadian phase. By contrast, M-types and E-types with very early or very late circadian phases showed large differences in their profiles of light exposure in relation to their circadian phase. This observation suggests that in these individuals, early or late circadian phases are related to relatively short and long circadian periods and that a phase-delaying profile of light exposure in M-types and a phase-advancing profile in E-types are necessary to ensure a stable entrainment to the 24-h day.  相似文献

In most metazoans mitochondria are inherited maternally. However, in some bivalve molluscs, two mitochondrial lineages are present: one transmitted through females (F-type), the other through males (M-type). This unique system is called Doubly Uniparental Inheritance (DUI) of mitochondria. In DUI species, M-type mitochondria have to invade the germ line of male embryos during development, otherwise sperm would transmit F-type mtDNA and DUI would fail. The mechanisms by which sperm mitochondria enter the germ line are still unknown. To address this question, we traced the movement of spermatozoon mitochondria (M-type) in embryos of the DUI species Ruditapes philippinarum by fertilizing eggs with sperm stained with the mitochondrial-specific vital dye MitoTracker Green. As in Mytilus DUI species, in R. philippinarum the distribution of sperm mitochondria follows two different patterns: an aggregated one in which these organelles locate near the first cleavage furrow, and a dispersed one in which sperm mitochondria are scattered. The presence of the two mitochondrial patterns in these taxa, together with their absence in species with Strictly Maternal Inheritance (SMI), confirms that their occurrence is related to DUI. Moreover, a Real-Time qPCR analysis showed that neither M-type nor F-type mitochondria undergo replication boosts in the earliest embryo development. This is the first study on sex-linked mtDNA copy number carried out by qPCR analysis on embryos of a DUI species and the first time the segregation patterns of sperm mitochondria are described in a DUI system other than Mytilus.  相似文献

Blidingia minima var. ramifera is reported for the first time in eastern North America. It occurs in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Nova Scotia and in Maine. In the estuary of the West and Rights Rivers (Antigonish Harbour, Nova Scotia) it is the most common intertidal alga and during its maximum growth period (June-August) covers 75–90% of the intertidal zone for several km of shoreline at the mouth of the Rights River. In culture, spore germination and early development were typical of the taxon as described from Europe. The taxon is raised to specific status as Blidingia ramifera stat. nov. Blidingia subsalsa is confirmed from New England based on observations of spore germination in plants from Maine and Connecticut.  相似文献

Many older adults (seniors) experience problems with getting enough sleep. Because of the link between sleep and circadian rhythms, changes in bedtime lead to changes in the amount of sleep obtained. Although primarily determined genetically, chronotype changes with advancing age towards a more morning-type (M-type) orientation. In a 2006 study, we have found a linear relationship, by which the earlier a senior’s bedtime, the more sleep she/he will obtain. The aim of this study was to see whether this relationship differs for M-type seniors, as compared to seniors outside the M-type category. Retired seniors (n?=?954, 535?M, 410F, 65?years+, mean age 74.4?years) taking part in a telephone interview were divided into M-types and Other types (O-types) using the Composite Scale of Morningness (CSM). The relationship between bedtime and Total Sleep Time (TST), and between rise-time and TST, was tested using linear regression separately for M-types and O-types. For each participant, habitual bedtime, rise-time and total Sleep Time (TST) [after removing time spent in unwanted wakefulness] were obtained using a telephone version of the Sleep Timing Questionnaire (STQ). Both chronotype groups showed a significant linear relationship between bedtime and TST (p?<?0.001); with earlier bedtimes leading to more TST (M-type 5.6?min; O-type 4.4?min per 10?min change [slope difference p?=?0.05]); and an opposite relationship between rise-time and TST with earlier rise-times leading to less TST (M-type 6.7?min; O-type 4.2?min per 10?min change [slope difference p?=?0.001]). M-types retired to bed 56?min earlier (p?<?0.001), awoke 93?min earlier (p?<?0.001) and obtained 23?min less TST (p?<?0.001) than O-types. In conclusion, both chronotypes showed TST to be related in a linear way to bedtime and rise-time; the overall shorter TST in M-types was due to them rising 93?min earlier, but only retiring to bed 56?min earlier than O-types; as well as having a steeper rise-time versus TST relationship.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to examine levels of energetic arousal (EA), tense arousal (TA), and hedonic tone (HT) in individuals with different circadian preferences. Subjects were males with extreme either morning (M-type) or evening (E-type) preferences (N=31), selected using the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire cutoff points derived from the Polish population norms. They completed the UWIST Mood Adjective Check List every 1.5 h between 08:00 to 20:00 h in laboratory conditions. The obtained data showed higher levels of TA and lower levels of HT in E-types over the whole day as compared to M-types. As for EA, M-types showed higher levels than E-types between 08:00 to 17:00 h, but the two groups showed no differences during the later hours of the day. Both groups were found to exhibit similar diurnal patterns in TA and HT, and dissimilarity between M-types and E-types appeared in the daily course of EA. The results show the three-dimensional model of mood is more advantageous in M-types than in E-types during the hours of typical human activity.  相似文献

Correct species identification and delineation are crucial for effective conservation and management. However, species delineation can be problematic in the presence of morphological ambiguities due to phenotypic plasticity, convergence, and/or interspecific hybridization. Here, we investigated the degree of hybridization between two closely related freshwater mussel species [Bivalvia: Unionidae; Lampsilis siliquoidea (Barnes) and L. radiata (Gmelin)] that present intermediate forms in areas of sympatry. Unionids have a distinct form of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) inheritance, termed doubly uniparental inheritance (DUI) where female mtDNA (F-type) is transmitted to all progeny but male mtDNA (M-type) is mostly inherited by the males resulting in mostly homoplasmic females and heteroplasmic males. An individual was identified as hybrid when F-type and M-type mtDNA of the two different species were found in the same individual. Twelve out of 116 sequenced males were identified as hybrids indicating that these species hybridize where their geographic range overlaps in the lower Great Lakes and St. Lawrence basins. Microsatellite analyses further support the occurrence of hybridization but at a larger spatial scale than indicated by the mitochondrial analyses. We also found that strong within-species population genetic structure affects the detection of purebred individuals overestimating the number of hybrids. Given the large geographic scale and proportion of hybrids found in this study, natural hybridization and introgression need to be considered when implementing local biodiversity inventories, identifying waterbodies as source of organisms for relocation and restoration projects and when setting appropriate conservation policies.Subject terms: Evolutionary genetics, Genetic hybridization  相似文献

Blidingia minima (Näg. ex Kütz.) Kylin from Muroran, Hokkaido, Japan, has been shown to exhibit four patterns of life history in culture. Sexual reproduction, reported fully for the first time in the genus, occurs in two of them. I. An isomorphic-heteromorphic complex in which erect, tubular sporophytes alternate with dioecious gametophytes of the same forms, with the irregular production by both phases of discoid or pulvinate (pincushion-like) microthalli capable of both sexual and asexual reproduction. II. An alternation of heteromorphic phases in which an erect, tubular sporophyte alternated irregularly with a gametophytic microthallus. III. An asexual alternation of heteromorphic phases in which an erect, tubular frond alternates irregularly with a microthallus by means of quadriflagellate zoospores. IV. An asexual, monophasic life cycle in which erect, tubular fronds are perpetuated by quadriflagellate zoospores. The first pattern occurred in spring populations from one of three sites. The second occurred in populations from two sites. The third and fourth occurred in all populations tested. The life history of Blidingia minima from Muroran is similar to that of Kornmannia zostericola from Muroran.  相似文献

An electron-microscopic analysis of spinal motoneurons and their synapses was carried out in a frog (Rana catesbeiana). Six different types of boutons (S, F, M, P, C and GS) have been identified. Their distribution on spinal motoneuron somata and proximal dendrites is described. The mean linear percentage of the surface area covered by boutons is 26.1 +/- 1.9%. S-type boutons are preferentially concentrated on the soma and proximal dendrites. The relative number of S-type boutons (58.7%) was greater (p less than 0.01) than that of F-type boutons (41.3%). This is in contrast to mammalian spinal motoneurons where F-type boutons are much more numerous on the soma than S-type boutons. F-type boutons are randomly distributed and the average ratio of S:F-type boutons is 20:14 (S:F ratio = 1.4). In contrast, M-type boutons synapse exclusively on the distal part of the dorsal dendrites and are restricted to the intermediate zone or to the dorsal horn. P-type boutons form synapses upon the large M-type boutons. The polarity of these axoaxonic synapses is always from P to M. Similarities and differences between the synaptology of frog and mammalian spinal motoneurons are discussed.  相似文献

利用两对SSR引物对两个基因座Pi4B和Pi4G进行了PCR扩增,测定了中国部分地区66个致病疫霉Phyophthora infestans(马铃薯晚疫病菌)菌株和2个参考菌株的SSR基因型,并对菌株的基因型进行了鉴定和命名.在被测定的66个致病疫霉菌株中,共产生了7种SSR基因型D-03,D-05,D-06,G-02,H-01,F-01和F-06,其中F-06为本研究新命名的基因型.F-01基因型菌株53个,占总菌株数目的80.3%,该基因型为中国致病疫霉的优势基因型.在对两个基因座Pi4B和Pi4G产生的等位基因统计分析发现基因座Pi4B产生的多样性比Pi4G高.对SSR数据揭示的河北、黑龙江和云南3个不同省份致病疫霉遗传多样性的比较发现,河北省和黑龙江省致病疫霉遗传多样性几乎相同,然而与云南省致病疫霉有较大的遗传差异.此外,发现致病疫霉SSR基因型与其对甲霜灵抗性无相关性.  相似文献

We observed transient status-dependent female mimicry related to reproductive behaviour in landlocked red-spotted masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou ishikawae). In females, the lower half of the lateral flank underwent solid blackening as an ovipositional character, and 70% of subordinate males showed a similar lateral pattern (M-type). In contrast, most of the paired males and 30% of subordinate males showed a different lateral pattern in which a melanic stripe ran along the lateral-line organ (N-type). It was possible to bring an M-type pseudo-fish model into closer proximity to a pair than an N-type model. In addition, the rate of successful sperm release in subordinate M-type males was higher than that in subordinate N-type males. A new pectinodontid species collected from sunken wood in the East China Sea off Zhejiang Province, China, is described and assigned to the genus Pectinodonta Dall, 1882. This new species, Pectinodonta mazuae n. sp., has a medium sized shell with a fine sculpture; shell width about 72%–75% of shell length, height about 61%–66% of length, and each lateral tooth has 16 or 17 cusps. These features may be used to distinguish the new species from its congeners.

Digestion of chromosomal DNA with the rare cutting restriction enzyme SfiI in association with pulsed field gel electrophoresis was used to observe restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) among isolates of group A Streptococcus. Streptococci examined included isolates belonging to the same M-type (epidemiologically related and unrelated), and isolates from other M-types. RFLP patterns were quite distinct between all serotypes tested. More importantly, isolates from within a serotype could be differentiated by this technique.  相似文献

Abstract Examination of 70 M-prototype group A streptococci showed small plasmids (2.0–2.5 MDa) to be present in strains representative of M-types 28, 57, 61, 63, 64 and 69. Identical results were obtained from M r and restriction endonuclease analyses of a 2.2-MDa plasmid (pDN691) found in the M-type 69 strain and similar plasmids in the M57 prototype and two other independently isolated M-type 57 strains. In all four strains the presence of plasmid correlated with the production of bacteriocin-like inhibitory activity identifiable as P type 614. Similar analysis revealed a possible relationship between a 2.5-MDa plasmid in the prototype M61 and M64 strains and the production of P-type 216 inhibitory activity. A survey of 56 group A streptococci recovered in association with either rheumatic fever or nephritis failed to demonstrate plasmid DNA with the exception of 2.2-MDa plasmids in four nephritis-associated M-type 57 isolates.  相似文献

Changes in the Miocene deep-sea benthic foraminifera at DSDP Site 289 closely correlate to the climatically induced variations in deep and bottom waters in the Pacific Ocean. In early Miocene time, oxygen and carbon isotopes indicate that bottom waters were relatively warm and poorly oxygenated. Benthic foraminiferal assemblages are characterized by various species inherited from the Oligocene. Expansion of the Antarctic icecap in the early middle Miocene, 14–16 m.y. ago, increased oxygen isotope values, produced cold, more oxygenated bottom waters and lead to a turnover in the benthic foraminifera. An Oligocene—early Miocene assemblage was replaced by a cibicidoid-dominated assemblage. Some species became extinct and benthic faunas became more bathymetrically restricted with the increased stratification of deep waters in the ocean. In mid-Miocene time, Epistominella exigua and E. umbonifera, indicative of young, oxygenated bottom waters, are relatively common at DSDP Site 289. Further glacial expansion 5–9 m.y. ago lowered sealevel, increased oceanic upwelling and associated biological productivity and intensified the oxygen minima. Abundant hispid and costate uvigerines become a dominant faunal element at shallow depths above 2500 m as E. umbonifera becomes common to abundant below 2500 m. By late Miocene time, benthic faunas similar in species composition and proportion to modern faunas on the Ontong-Java plateau, had become established.  相似文献

Two gene clusters encoding F- or V-type ATPases were found in genomic DNA of the hyperthermophilic bacterium Thermotoga neapolitana. The subunit genes of each ATPase formed an operon. While the gene arrangement in the operon of the F-type ATPase resembled those in eukaryotic organelles and bacteria, that of the V-type ATPase was different from those reported for archaea, bacteria, or eukaryotes. Both ATPases were found to be expressed in the cells of T. neapolitana by Western blot analysis. Although V-type ATPase could not be rendered soluble, F-type ATPase was solubilized with 1% Triton X-100 and characterized. This is the first report of the coexistence of both F- and V-type ATPases in hyperthermophilic bacteria. It has recently been shown by a genome analysis that Thermotoga maritima has no V-type ATPase gene cluster but does have an F-type ATPase gene cluster; however, part of a gene for the D-subunit of the V-type ATPase gene has been reported in the T. maritima genome. Evolution of the two types of ATPases in Thermotoga is discussed.  相似文献

Pseudomonas aeruginosa produces three types of bacteriocins: R-, F- and S-type pyocins. The S-type pyocin is a colicin-like protein, whereas the R-type pyocin resembles a contractile but non-flexible tail structure of bacteriophage, and the F-type a flexible but non-contractile one. As genetically related phages exist for each type, these pyocins have been thought to be variations of defective phage. In the present study, the nucleotide sequence of R2 pyocin genes, along with those for F2 pyocin, which are located downstream of the R2 gene cluster on the chromosome of P. aeruginosa PAO1, was analysed in order to elucidate the relationship between the pyocins and bacteriophages. The results clearly demonstrated that the R-type pyocin is derived from a common ancestral origin with P2 phage and the F-type from lambda phage. This notion was supported by identification of a lysis gene cassette similar to those for bacteriophages. The gene organization of the R2 and F2 pyocin gene cluster, however, suggested that both pyocins are not simple defective phages, but are phage tails that have been evolutionarily specialized as bacteriocins. A systematic polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis of P. aeruginosa strains that produce various subtypes of R and F pyocins revealed that the genes for every subtype are located between trpE and trpG in the same or very similar gene organization as for R2 and F2 pyocins, but with alterations in genes that determine the receptor specificity.  相似文献

The chemical structures of six lipid A species (A, B, C, D-1, D-2, and E) purified from Rhizobium etli CE3 were investigated by one- and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy. The R. etli lipid A subtypes each contain an unusual acyloxyacyl residue at position 2' as part of a conserved distal glucosamine moiety but differ in their proximal units. All R. etli lipid A species lack phosphate groups. However, they are derivatized with an alpha-linked galacturonic acid group at position 4', as shown by nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy. Component B, which had been not been reported in previous studies, features a beta, 1'-6 linked disaccharide of glucosamine acylated at positions 2, 3, 2', and 3' in a pattern that is typical of lipid A found in other Gram-negative bacteria. D-1 contains an acylated aminogluconate unit in place of the proximal glucosamine residue of B. C and E lack ester-linked beta-hydroxyacyl chains at position 3, as judged by their H-3 chemical shifts, and may be synthesized from B and D-1, respectively, by the R. etli 3-O-deacylase. D-2 is an isomer of D-1 that forms nonenzymatically by acyl chain migration. A may be an elimination product derived from D-1 during hydrolysis at 100 degrees C (pH 4.5), a step needed to release lipid A from lipopolysaccharide. Based on these findings, we propose a biosynthetic scheme for R. etli lipid A in which B is generated first by a variation of the E. coli pathway. The aminogluconate unit of D-1 could then be made from B by enzymatic oxidation of the proximal glucosamine. As predicted by our hypothesis, enzyme(s) can be demonstrated in extracts of R. etli that convert (14)C-labeled B to D-1.  相似文献

Past investigation of gametophyte ontogeny in Gleichenia bifida indicated that there was considerable plasticity in early developmental stages (spore germination to initiation of two-dimensional growth). Recent examination has shown that this early ontogeny is not so plastic and can be defined by a characteristic series of developmental stages. Cell divisions following germination result in a three-dimensional mass of cells which secondarily initiates the two-dimensional thallus. Early development as a three-dimensional mass correlates with other gametophyte and sporophyte features which indicate Gleichenia to be phylogenetically primitive. This pattern of early ontogeny may also be of adaptive significance in enabling the gametophytes to survive the environmental fluctuations of the exposed, bare-soil habitats which they colonize.  相似文献
