In this work we carried out ultrastructural, autoradiographic and biochemical analyses of the follicular epithelium during C. cranwelli previtellogenesis. This study revealed that the follicular epithelium in early previtellogenesis is constituted of a single layer of squamous homogeneous cells. During mid-previtellogenesis two types of cells develop: dark cells and clear cells. The follicular dark cells are actively involved in the synthesis of RNA, which is transferred to the oocyte through the interface. In late previtellogenesis the dark cells show apoptotic characteristics such as chromatin condensation, DNA fragmentation and cytoplasm shrinkage. This process forms apoptotic bodies that seem to be engulfed by the oocyte. Our results show evidence that, during mid- and late C. cranwelli previtellogenesis, the follicular epithelium undergoes remodelling processes interacting with the oocyte.  相似文献

This paper provides data on the skeleton, musculature, buccal apparatus, buccopharyngeal cavity and diet of Ceratophrys cranwelli tadpoles, and attempts to contribute to the knowledge of relations between morphology and ecology in anuran larvae. Both in morphological characters and feeding habits, these tadpoles are very similar to other species within the genus. They possess many of the structural features usually found in predaceous tadpoles: strong, keratinized jaw sheaths and keratodonts, reduced buccal papillation, high values of in‐lever arm proportion and buccal floor area, well‐developed ceratohyals, and hypertrophied jaw muscles. Food sources consist of other tadpoles, microcrustaceans, larvae of insects, plant fragments, as well as rotifers and microalgae. As facultative carnivores, they are likely to play an important role in regulating the aquatic communities of the ephemeral ponds where they develop.  相似文献

We report the emission of underwater sounds in the tadpoles of a second member of the family Ceratophryidae, Ceratophrys cranwelli. These tadpoles produce a short metallic‐like sound, which consists of short trains of pulses at Gosner stages 25, 28, and 37. Experiment I was designed to record underwater sounds and their characteristics. Experiment II was designed to test: (i) if at higher densities (total number of tadpoles/L) but fixed predator–prey proportions C. cranwelli larvae are cannibalistic, (ii) if cannibalism increases at higher proportions of predators at a fixed density, and (iii) if tadpoles display a mechanism of intraspecific recognition that may diminish the frequency of cannibalism. Each treatment combines larvae of C. cranwelli (predator) with those of Rhinella arenarum (prey). The number of live and dead individuals was recorded during 72 h, and the following variables were calculated: time to eat the first and second prey, time without eating, time to eat a congener, and number of events of cannibalism. The results indicate that relative predator–prey availability affects the frequency of predation between conspecifics. We consider that an antipredator mechanism exists in C. cranwelli tadpoles and that the underwater sound is part of it.  相似文献

The present study analyses, by transmission electron microscopy, vitellogenesis in two anuran amphibian families: Leptodactilidae (Ceratophrys cranwelli) and Bufonidae (Bufo arenarum). These differ in the type of stimulus that sets off their reproductive period, pluvial changes being the trigger in C. cranwelli and temperature increase in B. arenarum. We found that vitellogenesis follows an endocytic pathway that involves membranous structures (coated pits, coated vesicles, endosomes and multivesicular bodies). This process results in a fully grown yolk platelet of similar structure in both species. Despite the above similarity, a distinctive feature in B. arenarum was that the multivesicular bodies exhibited condensed proteins together with lipid droplets, the latter remaining as such even in the primordial yolk platelet. In C. cranwelli, however, lipids droplets were only found attached to the primordial yolk platelet. The coexistence of lipid droplets together with proteins in the nascent precursor yolk platelets observed in B. arenarum is similar to that found in B. marinus. This fact might constitute a characteristic feature of the Bufonidae family.  相似文献

Summary During stages 11 and 12, follicle cells surrounding the nurse cells produce lysosomes which presumably aid in the breakdown of the nurse cells. Accompanying a DNA reduction in nurse cell nuclei are several characteristic morphological changes including the appearance of intranuclear rod-like structures and nuclear granules about 300 Å in diameter. Similarities between structures seen in Drosophila nurse cell nuclei and those seen in other organisms are discussed. This research was supported by U. S. Ultrastructural analysis of the ovarian follicle prior to antrum formation in the shrew, Crocidura russula, shows gradual differentiation of mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi complexes, vesicles, and multivesicular bodies correlated with the growth of the oocyte from primordial to tertiary follicle and the development of the follicular wall. The growth rate of the follicle in relation to that of the oocyte was found to be biphasic.  相似文献

Summary Nitrogen-fixing peanut root nodules are characterized by their unique structural organization, distinct from other legume nodules. The focus of this study has been in and around the hostsymbiont interface, where the bacterioid and the host cell surface (peribacteroid membrane envelope) interact during symbiosis. The infected nodule cells have revealed the presence of lipid bodies (oleosomes) in intimate association with the peribacteroid membrane, which encloses the large spherical bacteroids with a relatively narrow peribacteroid space. Electron dense structures, referred to as dense bodies have been found attached to the bacteroid outer membranes at the host-symbiont interface. The dense bodies are osmiophilic, amorphous and 3,3-diaminobenzidine positive. The isolated intact bacteroids with dense bodies attached to their cell wall showed significant catalase activity. Many microbodies showing DAB-positive reaction have been found in the host cytoplasm, associated closely with the peribacteroid membrane. These ultrastructural and cytochemical characteristics of peanut root nodules suggest that lipids are utilized during symbiosis and the dense bodies and microbodies may be involved in the catabolic process.Abbreviation DAB 3,3-diaminobenzidine  相似文献

To be most energetically profitable, predators should ingest prey with the maximal nutritional benefit while minimizing the cost of processing. Therefore, when determining the quality of prey items, both the cost of processing and nutritional content must be considered. Specific dynamic action (SDA), the increase in metabolic rate associated with feeding in animals, is a significant processing cost that represents the total cost of digestion and assimilation of nutrients from prey. We examined the effects of an invertebrate diet (earthworms) and a vertebrate diet (newborn mice) on mass conversion efficiencies, growth, and SDA in the Chacoan horned frog, Ceratophrys cranwelli. We found the earthworm diet to be significantly lower in lipid, protein, and energy content when compared to the diet of newborn mice. Growth and mass conversion efficiencies were significantly higher in frogs fed newborn mice. However, mean SDA did not differ between frogs fed the two diets, a finding that contradicts many studies that indicate SDA increases with the protein content of the meal. Together, our results indicate that future studies evaluating the effect of meal type on bioenergetics of herpetofauna are warranted and may provide significant insight into the underlying factors driving SDA.  相似文献

The ultrastructural features of the encephalic dura mater-arachnoid borderline (interface) layer (zone) of rats, rabbits, cats and humans were studied. The rat's interface zone included the electron-lucent epithelium-like arranged fibroblasts of the inner dural layer, the rich in filaments cells of the dural neurothelium, a 20 nm wide intercellular cleft filled with electron-dense material and the dark mitochondria-rich cells of the outer arachnoidal layer; in rabbits and cats, this laminar distinction was less prominent, while in man, it was almost absent.  相似文献

Ultrastructural observations on oogenesis in Drosophila   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The ultrastructure of the follicle cells and oocyte periplasm is described during the stages of oogenesis immediately prior to, during, and immediately subsequent to, vitellogenesis. A number of features have not been described previously in Drosophila. Some yolk appears prior to pinocytosis of blood proteins. However, most of the protein yolk forms while the periplasm is filled with micropinocytotic invaginations and tubules derived from the oolemma. These tubules retain the internal layer of material characteristic of coated vesicles and are found to fuse with yolk spheres. No accumulation of electron-dense material in the endoplasmic reticulum or Golgi of the oocyte is found. Both trypan blue and ferritin are accumulated by the oocyte. The follicle cells have an elaborate endoplasmic reticulum during the period of maximum yolk accumulation. Adjacent cells are joined at their base by a zonula adhaerens, forming a band around the cells, and by plaques of gap junctions. Gap junctions are also present between nurse cells and follicle cells. During chorion formation, septate junctions also appear between follicle cells, adjacent to the zonula adhaerens.  相似文献

Summary The paired ovaries of Symphyla are sac-shaped. Their interior is filled with synchronously developing oocytes surrounded by a simple follicular epithelium. Previtellogenic oocytes have spherical or oval nuclei, the latter containing a large number of small nucleoli. Part of the nuclear surface is covered by a thick coat made up of a granular substance of medium electron density. The coat is penetrated by cisternae of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum. Micropinocytosis is the principal source of yolk in Symphyla; a small amount of yolk material arises within the mitochondrial cristae. Vitellogenic oocytes are characterized by a highly active rough endoplasmic reticulum synthesizing a material, probably lipoprotein in nature, which is incorporated into lipid droplets.Supported by Government Problem Grant II-1.3.13. Summary In the oocytes of Hanseniella nivea, cortical granules are formed in the peripheral ooplasm during late stages of oogenesis. Single Golgi elements are involved in the process. Concurrent with the formation of cortical granules is the appearance of a chorion on the oocyte surface. Precursors of this envelope are most likely synthesized by follicle cells.  相似文献

Ultrastructural study of oogenesis in the acoel turbellarian Convoluta   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
An ultrastructural investigation of oogenesis has been carried out on the acoel turbellarian Convoluta psammophyla. Developing female germ cells are not contained in well delimited ovaries but are freely distributed in the parenchyma and are surrounded by narrow cytoplasmic projections of accessory-follicle cells. Oogenesis can be divided into two periods, the previtellogenic and the vitellogenic phase. In the first period the oocyte undergoes a number of cell differentiations necessary for the intense biosynthetic activity of the second period. The ample development of nucleolus, ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi complexes along with the appearance of large lipid droplets and clusters of electron dense granules characterize the previtellogenic phase. The formation of yolk globules is the main feature of the second period of oogenesis. It occurs by an autosynthetic mechanism involving endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi complexes, since no endocytotic activity has been detected in the developing oocyte. The electron dense granules apparently move towards the cortical ooplasm during the late vitellogenic phase and take part in egg covering formation. Hypotheses on the role of follicle cells and on the phylogenetic significance of a comparative analysis of egg inclusions with homologous structures of other Turbellaria are suggested.  相似文献

Summary Oogenesis was studied in adult Triturus vulgaris (Urodela) with the electron microscope. The oocytes investigated ranged between 50 m and 1600 m in diameter. Two types of yolk platelet formation were found. Since both types involve the incorporation of high numbers of pinocytotic vesicles they are believed to be of an extraoocytic origin. On the basis of the order of their appearance they were named primary and secondary yolk.Five different types of vesicles were found, which participate in a variety of activities, such as yolk formation and the formation of the Golgi apparatus. They originate from four different sources, namely the nuclear membrane, the cytoplasm in connection with ribosome-like particles, the Golgi apparatus and the plasma membrane through pinocytosis. The results obtained were discussed especially with respect to differences found between the anura and the urodela, such as the presence or absence of cortical granules or equivalent structures. The authors wish to thank Prof. Dr. K.S. Ludwig for his valuable criticism and encouragement during the course of this study, Messrs. H. Boffin, C. Evers and Miss D. Lovri for their capable technical assistance.  相似文献

An ultrastructural study of oogenesis has been undertaken in some marine species of neoophoran turbellarians belonging to the Tricladida, Proseriata, and Prolecithophora. Among marine triclads, Cercyra hastata has oocytes with a remarkable amount of what appears to be autosynthetic proteinaceous yolk, while Procerodes dohrni and P. lobata have alecithal oocytes. Among the Proseriata, several species of the primitive family Monocelididae (subfamily Monocelidinae) have oocytes with a discrete amount of what appears to be autosynthetic yolk, while Parotoplana macrostyla, of the derived family Otoplanidae, has alecithal eggs. Finally preliminary observations on Plagiostomum maculatum (order Prolecithophora) suggest that oocytes have autosynthetic yolk globules. These results support the hypothesis (previously formulated on the basis of similar ultrastructural investigations on freshwater triclads) that the presence of autosynthetic yolk in some neoophoran turbellarians can be interpreted as a primitive character inherited from an ancestor with archoophoran organization. This plesiomorphic character would still be maintained in some species while lost in others following differentiation of vitellaria which are characteristic of the Neoophora.  相似文献

The relative rate of synthesis of a number of proteins and the protein phosphorylation pattern of growing and fully grown oocytes were influenced by the presence of granulosa cells. In particular, a 74-kDa phosphorylated protein was detected only in granulosa cell-enclosed growing mouse oocytes. When reaggregated with granulosa cells, the growing oocyte displayed the phosphorylated form of the 74-kDa protein but when oocytes were cultured on Sertoli cell monolayers or in granulosa cell-conditioned medium the 74-kDa protein was not phosphorylated. We propose that (1) granulosa cells regulate protein phosphorylation in mouse oocytes; (2) a 74-kDa protein is phosphorylated only in growing oocytes when surrounded by granulosa cells; and (3) granulosa cells, but not Sertoli cells, are competent to send the appropriate "signal" to the growing oocyte.  相似文献

Temereva, E.N., Malakhov, V.V. and Yushin, V.V. 2011. Ultrastructural study of oogenesis in Phoronopsis harmeri (Phoronida). —Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 92 : 241–250. The successive stages of oogenesis in Phoronopsis harmeri were examined by electron microscopy methods. During the oogenesis, each oocyte is encircled by vasoperitoneal (coelomic) cells forming a follicle. The previtellogenic oocytes are small cells which accumulate ribosomes for future synthesis; their cytoplasm contains characteristic clusters of mitochondria and osmiophilic particles resembling a germ plasm of other metazoans. The cytoplasm of the vitellogenic oocytes includes numerous mitochondria, cisternae of the rough endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi bodies and annulate lamellae. The synthesis of three types of inclusions was observed: strongly osmiophilic granules (lipid droplets) as a prevalent component, distinctly larger granules surrounded by membrane (proteinaceous yolk) and numerous large vesicles with pale flocculent content. No inclusions which could be unequivocally interpreted as the cortical granules were detected. The surface of the vitellogenic oocytes is covered by microvilli which increase in number and length during development. The oogenesis in Phoronida may be interpreted as follicular because of close association of oocytes with the vasoperitoneal tissue. However, well‐developed synthetic apparatus together with a strongly developed microvillous surface and absence of endocytosis indicate a clear case of autosynthetic vitellogenesis. Thus, in phoronids, there is a combination of simply developed follicle and autosynthesis that, apparently, is plesiomorphic character.  相似文献

The establishment of the anterior-posterior (AP) axis in Drosophila melanogaster requires signaling between the oocyte and surrounding somatic follicle cells during oogenesis [1] [2]. First, a signal from the oocyte (Gurken (Grk), a transforming growth factor-alpha (TGFalpha) homolog) is received by predetermined terminal follicle cells in which the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) pathway is activated and a posterior fate is induced [2] [3] [4]. Later, the posterior follicle cells send an unidentified signal back to the oocyte, which leads to the reorganization of its cytoskeletal polarity. This reorganization is required for proper localization of maternal determinants, such as oskar (osk) and bicoid (bcd) mRNAs, that determine the AP polarity of the oocyte and the subsequent embryo [2]. We show here that when the gene lanA, which encodes the extracellular matrix component laminin A, is mutated in posterior follicle cells, localization of AP determinants is disrupted in the underlying oocyte. Posterior follicle-cell differentiation and follicle cell apical-basal polarity are unaffected in the lanA mutant cells, suggesting that laminin A is required for correct signaling from the posterior follicle cells that polarizes the oocyte. This is the first evidence that the extracellular matrix is involved in the establishment of a major body axis.  相似文献
