The most common form of congenital adrenal hyperplasia is due to a deficiency of 21-hydroxylase (21OHD) activity and is caused by a mutation in the CYP21 gene. By genotyping patients, new and important information can be gained, including presence or absence of 21OHD in borderline cases, determining the severity of disease and identifying heterozygote carriers. Current management of patients with 21OHD involves administering sufficient glucocorticoids to suppress excess adrenal androgen secretion, but not so much that bone growth and mineralization are impaired. New management strategies have been proposed and include administering only substitution doses of corticosteroids and counteracting side-effects by administering an anti-androgen and aromatase inhibitor. Adrenalectomy has also been proposed. Further investigation into these approaches is necessary.  相似文献

The revised edition of Paul Seabright’s The Company of Strangers is critically reviewed. Seabright aims to help non-economists participating in the cross-disciplinary study of the evolution of human sociality appreciate the potential value that can be added by economists. Though the book includes nicely constructed and vivid essays on a range of economic topics, in its main ambition it largely falls short. The most serious problem is endorsement of the so-called strong reciprocity hypothesis that has been promoted by several prominent economists, but does not pass muster with biologists.  相似文献

Summary Tethered flyingDrosophila melanogaster change the posture of their caudal body appendages in response to visual stimuli. In the present paper the relevance of lateral abdomen deflections for flight control is analysed. During abdomen deflections the line of action of the gravitational force is shifted with the fly's centre of mass. The line of action of aerodynamic drag forces is displaced accordingly, because friction is increased on the side of the body to which the abdomen is deflected. These two passive forces, together with the average flight forces generated actively by the wings, induce a yaw moment. In still air, the axis of this torque is tilted about 30° backwards relative to the vertical body axis. It will be called yaw axis of the flight mechanics. Two sets of observations support the notion of a combined yaw motor output. (a) The elementary motion detectors mediating the lateral abdomen deflection and the dynamics of the response resemble that of the optomotor response measured as yaw torque or as variation of wing beat amplitudes. (b) The asymmetric directional selectivity of the motion detecting system mediating the abdomen deflection corresponds to the orientation of the yaw axis of the flight mechanics. Background  

This work explores the potential contribution of bioenergy technologies to 60% and 80% carbon reductions in the UK energy system by 2050, by outlining the potential for accelerated technological development of bioenergy chains. The investigation was based on insights from MARKAL modelling, detailed literature reviews and expert consultations. Due to the number and complexity of bioenergy pathways and technologies in the model, three chains and two underpinning technologies were selected for detailed investigation: (1) lignocellulosic hydrolysis for the production of bioethanol, (2) gasification technologies for heat and power, (3) fast pyrolysis of biomass for bio-oil production, (4) biotechnological advances for second generation bioenergy crops, and (5) the development of agro-machinery for growing and harvesting bioenergy crops. Detailed literature searches and expert consultations (looking inter alia at research and development needs and economic projections) led to the development of an 'accelerated' dataset of modelling parameters for each of the selected bioenergy pathways, which were included in five different scenario runs with UK-MARKAL (MED). The results of the 'accelerated runs' were compared with a low-carbon (LC-Core) scenario, which assesses the cheapest way to decarbonise the energy sector.  相似文献

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is a very important disease of cattle in Great Britain, where it has been increasing in incidence and geographical distribution. In addition to cattle, it infects other species of domestic and wild animals, in particular the European badger (Meles meles). Policy to control bTB is vigorously debated and contentious because of its implications for the livestock industry and because some policy options involve culling badgers, the most important wildlife reservoir. This paper describes a project to provide a succinct summary of the natural science evidence base relevant to the control of bTB, couched in terms that are as policy-neutral as possible. Each evidence statement is placed into one of four categories describing the nature of the underlying information. The evidence summary forms the appendix to this paper and an annotated bibliography is provided in the electronic supplementary material.  相似文献

SUMMARY: We want to evaluate the performance of two FDR-based multiple testing procedures by Benjamini and Hochberg (1995, J. R. Stat. Soc. Ser. B, 57, 289-300) and Storey (2002, J. R. Stat. Soc. Ser. B, 64, 479-498) in analyzing real microarray data. These procedures commonly require independence or weak dependence of the test statistics. However, expression levels of different genes from each array are usually correlated due to coexpressing genes and various sources of errors from experiment-specific and subject-specific conditions that are not adjusted for in data analysis. Because of high dimensionality of microarray data, it is usually impossible to check whether the weak dependence condition is met for a given dataset or not. We propose to generate a large number of test statistics from a simulation model which has asymptotically (in terms of the number of arrays) the same correlation structure as the test statistics that will be calculated from the given data and to investigate how accurately the FDR-based testing procedures control the FDR on the simulated data. Our approach is to directly check the performance of these procedures for a given dataset, rather than to check the weak dependency requirement. We illustrate the proposed method with real microarray datasets, one where the clinical endpoint is disease group and another where it is survival.  相似文献

At the core of regenerative medicine lies the expectation of repair or replacement of damaged tissues or whole organs. Donor scarcity and transplant rejection are major obstacles, and exactly the obstacles that stem cell based therapy promises to overcome. These therapies demand a comprehensive understanding of the asymmetric division of stem cells, i.e. their ability to produce cells with identical potency or differentiated cells. It is believed that with better understanding, researchers will be able to direct stem cell differentiation. Here, we describe extraordinary advances in manipulating stem cell fate that show that we need to focus on the centrosome and the centrosome-derived primary cilium. This belief comes from the fact that this organelle is the vehicle that coordinates the asymmetric division of stem cells. This is supported by studies that report the significant role of the centrosome/cilium in orchestrating signaling pathways that dictate stem cell fate. We anticipate that there is sufficient evidence to place this organelle at the center of efforts that will shape the future of regenerative medicine.  相似文献

In this perspective we discuss that bacterial genomes have optimized during evolution to control a range of cytoplasm, from immediately after cell division to a maximum amount/volume present just prior to DNA replication and subsequent cell division. The genetic expansion of bacteria via evolution may be limited to a genome size:cytoplasm amount/volume ratios and energetics that have been selected for during 3.6-4 billion years of evolution on the Earth. The optimal genome size is one that is relatively constant, but also has some plasticity for evolutionary change (via gene transfer) and mutational events, and can control a range of cytoplasm during the cell cycle.  相似文献

The ontogenetic development of the pectoral girdle in seven anuran species (Xenopus laevis, Discoglossus pictus, Bombina bombina, Bombina variegata, Pelobates fuscus, Bufo bufo and Rana dalmatina) was studied using cleared and stained specimens. The epicoracoid cartilage was found to develop in two different ways resulting in an arciferal or firmisternal type of the pectoral girdle. In the arciferal one, the epicoracoid originates from a medial prolongation of the procoracoid cartilage and broadly overlaps its counter part during further development. In the firmisternal pectoral girdle, the epicoracoids are formed by the widened cartilaginous medial edges of the coracoids that fuse together along the midline. Polarization of ontogenetic characters shows, that omosternum evolves inside Anura, and the type of sternum occurring in basal Anura seems to be an apomorphy of all Batrachia. The sternal elements have a single or paired rudiment, their development is connected with M. rectus abdominis or a zonal area and they remain cartilaginous or ossify during postmetamorphic development. An occurrence of omosternum in Barbourula busuangensis was described for the first time.  相似文献

Toxoplasma gondii is a ubiquitous parasite with a widespread distribution both in terms of geographical and host range. Although the definitive host is the cat, it is also a major health hazard to domestic animals and humans. Three routes of transmission are recognised (infection from the cat, carnivory and congenital transmission). We aimed to assess the relative importance of congenital transmission, using sheep as a model system, due to the lack of carnivory. We report, using PCR as a diagnostic tool, that congenital transmission occurs with high frequency (69%). If transmission from oocysts was important in sheep, we would expect sheep reared under the same environmental conditions (i.e. a single farm) to have a random distribution of Toxoplasma infection. Using breeding records in conjunction with PCR, some families were found to have high Toxoplasma prevalence and abortion while others were free of Toxoplasma infection and abortion (P < 0.01). This supports the notion that Toxoplasma may be transmitted vertically. In humans, we conducted a similar study and showed that Toxoplasma was transmitted from mother to baby in 19.8% of cases. Vertical transmission in Toxoplasma may be more important than previously thought and this knowledge should be considered in any eradication strategies.  相似文献
