Hatch dates, densities, age-structure, and production rates were documented for female spruce grouse (Dendragapus canadensis) in Alberta, Ontario, and New Brunswick, Canada, over a total of 17 years during 1970–1990. Objectives of analyses were to measure the magnitude of synchrony of hatch dates at different densities of females in different areas, determine whether synchrony differs between adults and yearlings, determine whether adults might influence the time and synchrony with which yearlings hatch clutches, and determine whether mean production of juveniles into late summer varies across the span of hatch dates. Hatch date synchrony was substantial in all areas: on average, 67% of all clutches each year hatched within 6.5–8.8 days, within areas, similar to that among colonial avian species. The extent of synchrony was not correlated well with female density, in contrast to a general prediction from Darling’s hypothesis for colonial species. Synchrony did not differ between yearlings and adults in all areas even though yearlings generally hatched clutches later than adults. Synchrony was not correlated well with an index of the magnitude of interaction between adults and yearlings, suggesting that adults had little if any effect on the timing of reproductive activity of yearlings. In contrast, median hatch dates of yearlings were 1–2 days earlier where adults were experimentally thinned than where adults were common. Production of juveniles into late summer did not vary across the span of hatch dates despite their synchronous temporal distribution, providing no evidence for an immediate adaptive value for synchronous nesting. Yellow-bellied marmots, Marmota flaviventris, are obligate hibernators with a relatively short active season. Animals born earlier in the season have higher chances of fulfilling the energetic requirements to survive the long winter. Therefore, the onset of breeding should have a profound impact on juvenile survival. However, there are different ways to compensate for a late start. Late breeders might allocate more resources to late born offspring, making up for the bad start, or juveniles might show compensatory growth. They are not exclusive hypotheses and both can lead to juveniles entering hibernation with a similar body condition. We used data from a long term study in and around the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Colorado to test these two hypotheses. Animals are individually marked and trapped regularly. We compared mass at weaning, mass at the end of the season, growth rates and survival between animals born earlier and later in the season. We found no evidence of increased maternal input: late breeders had lighter offspring at weaning than early breeders, and late born juveniles did not increase their growth rates. Therefore, late born individuals ended the season with lower body mass, and were thus, less likely to survive the winter. In conclusion, life-history trajectories of juvenile yellow-bellied marmots were determined by maternal allocation, whereas post-weaning decisions did not modify their fate.  相似文献

Dental health was evaluated in two populations of raccoons (Procyon lotor) in western Illinois (USA); one was from a rural agricultural area with low human density and the other from a nearby state park heavily used by humans and raccoons. From 1989 through 1993, 300 raccoons were live-trapped in the agricultural area and 246 raccoons were live-trapped in the park. Oral health was assessed using gingival and calculi indices and by measuring loss of attachment and tooth wear. Raccoons from the park were significantly older and smaller, but not thinner, than raccoons from the farmed area. Gingival and periodontal indices, tooth wear, tooth loss, and caries increased significantly from juveniles to yearlings to adults, at both sites. Males had higher levels of gingivitis and loss of periodontal attachment than females, but were similar on other dental measures. There were no seasonal differences between raccoons in dental indices. Animals with high scores for one oral measure tended to have high values for all indices. Dental health was generally good for juveniles and yearlings from both sites. Among adults, periodontal indices and the prevalence of caries were significantly higher in the park, but prevalence of broken or missing teeth was similar for both populations. There was no association between body condition, and a higher dental score or more missing or broken teeth.  相似文献

An association between heterozygosity at six to nine enzyme coding loci and correlates of fitness (survival, age at first maturation) was tested in two cohorts of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss reared in the laboratory. A subsample offish from the first cohort was reared together for 3 years. There, fish sampled as embryos, juveniles and adults did not differ significantly in multilocus heterozygosity (MLH, numbers of heterozygous loci per fish). However, fish that died during a period of high natural mortality had significantly greater MLH than those sampled before as hatched embryos and later as adults. The number of homozygotes and heterozygotes at three loci differed significantly among different aged fish but in different directions. Allele counts at two of these loci also differed among samples. In a second cohort, the heterozygosity of fish that died during the period of high natural mortality was compared with that of healthy fish collected at the same time; no significant differences in MLH or allele frequencies were detected. Taken together, the lower MLH of the natural mortalities as well as single locus effects observed in the first cohort might be explained by the differential survival of fish with particular genotypes leading to changes in heterozygosity of the entire cohort over time rather than heterozygosity per se . Age of first maturation and heterozygosity (MLH and single locus) were not associated in males but were marginally so in females. Time of ovulation within the spawning season was not associated with the MLH of females.  相似文献

Dominance hierarchies usually form quickly among avian foraging groups because they are beneficial to most individuals by reducing conflict. Several characteristics that correlate with dominance rank have been identified in birds, but most of these conclusions rely on studies of temperate species. Hence, we studied whether captive group members of a subtropical species, grey‐cheeked fulvetta Alcippe morrisonia, form social dominance hierarchies when competing for food during the non‐breeding season. We also investigated whether sex, age, body condition and fat score were related to an individual's dominance rank which was established by counting aggressive interactions in six captive groups of nine individuals each. In all groups, linear dominance hierarchies were formed whereby yearlings dominated over adult birds, and individuals with a better body condition were also more dominant, while sex and fat score had no discernable effect. Male yearlings had significantly higher body masses and body condition indices than male adults, while female yearlings had significantly higher body masses, body condition indices and fat scores than female adults. However, there were no significant differences between male and female yearlings or adults for any of these variables. We suggest possible reasons for the dominance of yearlings, such as captive conditions or the higher body weight of yearlings.  相似文献

1. In socially monogamous species, females may seek extra-pair copulation to gain genetic benefits. In order to test this 'genetic quality' hypothesis, one must compare the performance of extra-pair young (EPY) and within-pair young (WPY). Such tests, however, are scarce and results published so far are inconclusive. 2. Here, we test the 'genetic quality' hypothesis using multistate capture-recapture models to compare age-specific survival and access to dominance between EPY and WPY in the alpine marmot Marmota marmota, a socially monogamous mammal showing extra-pair paternities. 3. When compared with WPY, survival of EPY was higher by 15%, 10% and 30%, for juveniles, yearlings and 2-year-old individuals, respectively. Survival at older ages did not differ. 4. Survival corresponded to true survival for yearlings and juveniles as dispersal does not occur before 2 years of age in marmots. For older individuals, survival estimates included a mixture of survival and dispersal. The 30% increase of the 2-year-old EPY survival might reflect delayed dispersal rather than high survival of EPY as compared with WPY. 5. WPY and EPY had the same probability (0.28) to access dominance at 2 years of age, but EPY were more successful at older ages than WPY (0.46 vs. 0.10). 6. Both survival and reproductive performance were higher in EPY than in WPY. The fitness advantages of adopting such a mixed mating tactic are thus likely to be high for marmot females. We suggest that obtaining genetic benefits is the main evolutionary force driving extra-pair paternity in alpine marmots.  相似文献

Six well-trained male cross-county skiers trained for 7 days at 2700 m above sea level, their accommodation being at 1695 m. Blood samples for haemoglobin concentration [Hb], erythropoietin concentration [EPO] and reticulocyte count were collected before, during and after altitude exposure. Packed cell volume (PCV), red blood cell count (RBC), transferrin-iron saturation, mean red cell volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), maximal oxygen uptake, maximal achieved ventilation and heart rate were determined pre- and postaltitude exposure. The [EPO] increased significantly from pre-altitude (mean 36 mU.ml-1, SD 5) to maximal altitude values (mean 47 mU.ml-1, SD 3). The [Hb] had increased significantly above pre-altitude values (mean 8.8 mmol.l-1, SD 0.5) on day 2 (mean 9.1 mmol.l-1, SD 0.4) and day 7 (mean 9.4 mmol.l-1, SD 0.4) at altitude and on day 4 postaltitutde (mean 9.2 mmol.l-1, SD 0.4). The reticulocyte counts had increased significantly above pre-altitude values (mean 6%, SD 3%) on day 3 at altitude (mean 12%, SD 8%) and day 4 postaltitude (mean 10%, SD 5%). The RBC counts had increased on the 4th postaltitude day. The transferrin-iron saturation had decreased below pre-altitude values (mean 23%, SD 4%) on day 4 postaltitude (mean 14%, SD 5%) and had increased on day 11 postaltitude (mean 22%, SD 7%). There were no significant changes in MCV, MCHC, PCV, maximal oxygen uptake and maximal achieved ventilation, and heart rate pre- to postaltitude. These observations demonstrated an erythropoietic response to the altitude training which was not sufficient to increase the postaltitude maximal oxygen uptake.  相似文献

In harem‐polygynous societies, body condition is often correlated with dominance rank. However, the consequences of dominance are less clear. High‐ranking males do not inevitably have the highest reproductive success, especially in systems where females mate with multiple males. In such societies, we expect male reproductive success to be more highly skewed than female reproductive success, but reproductive skew in females can still arise from rankings established within matrilineal societies. Dominance can also impact life‐history decisions by influencing dispersal patterns in yearlings. To better understand the function of dominance in harem‐polygynous societies, we studied the causes and consequences of dominance in yellow‐bellied marmots (Marmota flaviventris), a social rodent with skewed male reproductive success and female reproductive suppression. Specifically, we examined body condition as a predictor and the probability of breeding, number of offspring, and dispersal as outcomes of dominance. Additionally, we looked at variation in dominance between males and females and adults and yearlings, because marmots can engage in distinct interactions depending on the type of individuals involved. We found that marmots in better body condition have higher dominance rank than those in poorer condition. In addition, adults are dominant over yearlings. Within yearlings, dominance does not influence dispersal, but those in better body condition are less likely to disperse. Within all adults, individuals in better condition produce more offspring per year. Within adult males, more dominant males have greater reproductive success. Despite previous evidence of reproductive suppression in females, we found no effects of dominance rank on female reproductive success in the current study. The function of dominance in female marmots remains enigmatic.  相似文献

Standard hematologic and serum chemistry parameters were determined from 28 harp seals (Phoca groenlandica) and 20 hooded seals (Cystophora cristata) sampled from 6 March 2001 to 13 March 2001 during the breeding season. Whole blood was collected immediately postmortem from harp seal mother-pup pairs and from six hooded seal pups, and from live-captured adult hooded seals and three hooded seal pups; blood was analyzed within 24 hr at a local human hospital. A certified veterinary laboratory validated subsamples of whole blood and analyzed all serum chemistry parameters. Significant interlaboratory differences in mean values of packed cell volume (PCV) and mean cell volume (MCV) were found. Significant differences were found between samples from the five seal groups (adult male hooded seals, lactating female hooded seals, unweaned hooded seal pups; lactating female harp seals, and unweaned harp seal pups) for hematology and most serum chemistry parameters. In general, age-class influenced mean values of PCV, hemoglobin (HB), red blood cell (RBC) counts, MCV, mean cell hemoglobin (MCH), mean cell hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and nucleated red blood cell (NRBC) counts per 100 leucocytes, but most age-related variations were species specific. Harp seal pups had significantly lower mean values of HB, PCV, MCH, and MCHC than did other seal groups, and significantly lower mean RBC counts than did hooded seal pups. Mean NRBC counts per 100 leukocytes were more than three times higher in harp seal pups than in hooded seal pups, but this difference was not statistically significant. Mean MCV were significantly lower in harp and hooded seal pups compared to those of adult harp and hooded seals. Differences in hemograms between pup species were likely because of the precocious development of hooded seal pups, which are weaned within 4 days, compared to 12 days for harp seal pups. Among adult seal groups, male hooded seals had significantly higher mean values of PCV and HB than did female harp and hooded seals, and significantly higher mean RBC counts than did adult female hooded seals. Among adult females, mean values of MCH and MCHC were statistically higher in hooded seals than in harp seals. Adult female harp and hooded seals did not differ significantly in other RBC parameters and mean leukocyte counts. Mean values of glucose, blood urea nitrogen, total bilirubin, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total protein, and albumin showed species-specific variations between adults and pups. Except for ALP, few significant differences in mean enzyme activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), ALT, creatine kinase and gamma-glutamyltransferase were found between seal groups. Mean concentrations of electrolytes (calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, and total carbon dioxide) varied with age class, but variations in potassium and magnesium were species specific. Harp seal pups had significantly higher mean phosphorus and potassium levels compared to other seal groups.  相似文献

Field studies of the social organization of yellow-bellied marmots (Marmota flaviventris) in the vicinity of Gothic, Colorado, were initiated in 1962. Data collected during the subsequent 14 years are sufficient to analyse the behaviours that correlate with the time yearling male and yearling female marmots leave their natal home sites. Dispersal of yearling male yellow-bellied marmots was delayed when there were many yearling males in a harem, when yearling males were underweight, and when the rates of amicable interactions between yearling males and adults were high. Dispersal of yearling females was delayed when adults behaved amicably toward them and when the rates of adult aggression were low. Dispersal of yearling females was independent of the number of females in a harem. These observations are in accord with a model of dispersal that relates sexual differences in dispersal to maternal reproductive tactics, and to responses of yearlings that would maximize their own fitness.  相似文献

I studied the behaviour of free-living Alpine marmots, Marmota marmota, from 1 June to 19 August 1973 in Vanoise National Park, France. Comparing animals of the same sex and age class, individual differences in behaviour generally were greater between colonies than within colonies. Individual differences among adults exceeded those of yearlings, and greater individual differences occurred with regard to social behaviour than with relatively asocial behaviour. General patterns of social biology resembled those of the North American marmots, exceptions being a tendency for adult males to remain somewhat away from and at higher elevation than their colonies, and a distinctly lower frequency of greeting behaviour. Implications of these findings for the evolution of marmot social behaviour are discussed.  相似文献

Food availability is a major environmental factor that can influence life history within and across generations through direct effects on individual quality and indirect effects on the intensity of intra- and intercohort competition. Here, we investigated in yearling and adult common lizards (Zootoca vivipara) the immediate and delayed life-history effects of a prolonged food deprivation in the laboratory. We generated groups of fully fed or food-deprived yearlings and adults at the end of one breeding season. These lizards were released in 16 outdoor enclosures together with yearlings and adults from the same food treatment and with food-deprived or fully fed juveniles, creating four types of experimental populations. Experimental populations were then monitored during 2 years, which revealed complex effects of food on life-history trajectories. Food availability had immediate direct effects on morphology and delayed direct effects on immunocompetence and female body condition at winter emergence. Also, male annual survival rate and female growth rate and body size were affected by an interaction between direct effects of food availability and indirect effects on asymmetric competition with juveniles. Reproductive outputs were insensitive to past food availability, suggesting that female common lizards do not solely rely on stored energy to fuel reproduction. Finally, food conditions had socially-mediated intergenerational effects on early growth and survival of offspring through their effects on the intensity of competition. This study highlights the importance of social interactions among cohorts for life-history trajectories and population dynamics in stage-structured populations.  相似文献

Short-term changes in testicular spermatozoa, testes weight, testes length, epididymes weight, epididymal spermatozoa, and body weight of adult and yearling male white-tailed deerOdocoileus virginianus (Zimmermann, 1780) were examined over a 9-week period that included the peak of the breeding season in South Carolina. Mean values for all characteristics were significantly greater in adults compared to yearlings. Values for reproductive characteristics tended to be highest during the last week in October or the first week in November and decreased over the course of the investigation. Body weight of adults decreased from late October through early December, whereas body weight of yearlings fluctuated only slightly throughout the 9-week period. Significant correlations were observed among all reproductive characteristics and body weight was highly correlated with all characteristics except testicular spermatozoa. Values for reproductive characteristics differed significantly between the right and left sides of the reproductive tracts. Results demonstrate the occurrence of short-term changes in reproductive capabilities of white-tailed deer that are relevant for the development of management strategies for this species.  相似文献

The survival rates and body masses of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) were studied on the island of Storfosna in central Norway in relation to sex, age, season and year. There were no predators on the island, and hunting was halted during the study period, resulting in a population increase from 10 to 40 individuals per km2 during the period 1991–1994. A total of 352 individual roe deer were radio-monitored on a monthly basis. Survival rates were analyzed using the MARK software. An age effect in survival was found separating fawns from yearlings and adults, and for yearlings and adults we furthermore found a year effect. There was evidence for density dependence in body masses of fawns and yearlings, but no density effect in survival rates. We found no sex effect in winter body mass, but a significant sex effect in survival rates. We conclude that (1) increased population density can have an effect on body masses without causing a change in survival rates (2) roe deer can maintain very high survival rates under favourable environmental conditions even at very high population densities (3) male adults can reach equally high survival rates as females under favourable circumstances.  相似文献

The allostatic load model describes how individuals maintain homeostasis in challenging environment and posits that costs induced by a chronic perturbation (i.e., allostatic load) are correlated to the secretion of glucocorticoids, such as corticosterone. Habitat perturbations from anthropogenic activities are multiple and functional responses to those are still unclear. Here, we manipulated the habitat quality in 24 semi-natural populations of the common lizard during 1 year. We tested the predictions of the allostatic load model that habitat degradation should increase baseline corticosterone levels, and should induce concomitant physiological changes, such as lipid mobilization and lower immunocompetence, and demographic changes, such as lower body growth, survival and/or reproductive performances. Our results highlight stage-dependent effects of habitat degradation on physiological traits during the breeding season: adult lizards had higher baseline corticosterone levels and yearling lizards had a lower inflammatory response than adults, whereas juveniles had higher circulating lipid levels than yearlings and adults without concomitant change in corticosterone levels. In addition, habitat degradation reduced the performances of adults but not of juveniles: in low habitat quality populations, adult males had a lower survival and females had a smaller fecundity. These results are in accordance with the allostatic load model given that allostatic load was detected only during the season and in life stages of maximal energy expenditure. This underlines the importance to account for individual energy requirements to better understand demographic responses to habitat perturbation.  相似文献

The oestrous cycles of fourteen red deer hinds (six yearling; eight more than 2 years old) were synchronized during the early breeding season by removal of a progesterone-containing intravaginal device and blood samples were taken at intervals of 3 h commencing 13 or 25 h later and continued for 54 h. The controlled internal drug release devices (CIDRs) were removed at 08:00 h (group 1; three yearlings and four adults) or 12 h later at 20:00 h (group 2; three yearlings and four adults). There was no significant effect of time of removal of CIDR on the interval to the onset of oestrus (group 1, 34.5 +/- 4.05 h; group 2, 42.14 +/- 7.8 h) on the time of peak concentration (group 1, 41.81 +/- 5.69 h; group 2, 41.71 +/- 7.81 h) or on duration of the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge (group 1, 15.00 +/- 0.95 h; group 2, 14.57 +/- 0.78 h). The six yearling animals exhibited oestrus and LH surge significantly later than the adults (55 +/- 4.2 versus 32 +/- 6.3 h for the LH surge for yearling and adult females, respectively). In a further experiment, 20 hinds were synchronized during the breeding season by removal of CIDR at two times of day 12 h apart and placed with a stag. Mating took place at a mean time of 42.1 +/- 2.4 h and 37.0 +/- 1.3 h later in the two groups. There was no significant effect of time of removal of CIDR upon time to onset of oestrus.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The prevalence of Elaphostrongylus cervi infection in moose shot during the hunting season 1983 in 47 different municipalities in Southern Norway was studied. E. cervi seemed to occur endemically in the population, as infection was found in 35 % of 1,982 moose examined. Diagnosis was made on the basis of the presence of eggs and first-stage larvae (L1) and associated histopathological lesions in the lung, and on the presence of L1 in the faeces. The prevalence varied considerably between different municipalities. No relationship was found between the prevalence of E. cervi and the population density of moose. The highest prevalence was found in municipalities where red deer harbouring E. cervi were also present. The prevalence among males was higher than among females, and that among yearlings higher than among calves and adults. In no case was infection found in animals 51/2 years of age or older. Carcass weight in infected adult moose was significantly lower than in non-infected adults.  相似文献

Standard hematology parameters were determined for 122 sloth bears (Melursus ursinus ursinus) at the Sur Sarovar Bird Sanctuary, Uttar Pradesh, India (27 degrees 0'N; 77 degrees 45'E), and the Bannerghatta Biological Park, Karnataka, India (12 degrees 48'N; 77 degrees 34'E) from March 2003 to July 2006. These two native sloth bear habitats have different climatic conditions and provided an opportunity to examine the effect of climate on the physiologic hematology values of these bears. We primarily analyzed the influence of age, sex, season, and body weight on the different hematology parameters. Several values were significantly different in sloth bear cubs (1 yr). The cubs had a lower erythrocyte count, hemoglobin concentration, packed cell volume (PCV), and mean cell hemoglobin (MCV) values when compared to adult and subadult bears. The cubs also had higher leukocyte counts, due to higher circulating neutrophils, as compared to adult and subadult bears. Within subadult and adult bears, we also identified a sexual dimorphic difference in leukocyte count in adult and subadult bears, wherein female bears had higher counts than males. This difference was the result of a significantly higher number of circulating neutrophils in female bears. Platelet counts were also higher in females as compared to males. On comparing different seasons, leukocyte counts were higher in winter as compared to the summer and monsoon seasons. When compared based on location, erythrocyte counts were higher in subadult and adult bears at Bannerghatta, which was at a higher altitude than Sur Sarovar. Within subadult and adult bears, we did not find any significant influence of age or body weight on the different hematologic parameters. In this study we have obtained mean hematologic values for sloth bears in their native habitat to serve as a reference for this species. This report will be useful to develop and evaluate health profiles of sloth bears under various ecological conditions.  相似文献

Nine-banded armadillosDasypus novemcinctus Linnaeus, 1758 are interesting in part because (a) they give birth to litters of genetically identical quadruplets, and (b) the species’ range has expanded rapidly throughout the southern United States during the last 150 years, suggesting substantial dispersal of individuals. Using data from 7 field seasons between 1992 and 1999, we examined the extent of juvenile recruitment and retention of adults in a population of armadillos from northern Florida. There were no sex differences in the likelihood of recruitment or most attributes of male and female recruits at any age. In the few cases where more than one littermate was recruited into the population, siblings were significantly more widely dispersed as adults than they were as juveniles, thus limiting opportunities for interaction among clonal siblings. There was some evidence that recruits ranged more widely than other individuals, suggesting recruits may have been searching for suitable sites to establish themselves. Recruits were heavier than non-recruits as both juveniles and yearlings, which may have aided in establishing a home range, but recruits were lighter than other animals as adults. Overall, slightly less than 50% of armadillos first captured as adults were never seen in a subsequent year, suggesting these individuals may have been transients. However, some adults remained in the population for multiple years, moving very little from the area where they were first sighted. As with recruits, there were no sex differences in the likelihood of adults being retained in the population nor in the attributes of retained males and females. Retained animals exhibited more extensive anatomical damage and moved farther between successive sightings within years than did non-residents. Adults were more likely to be retained in the population than juveniles were to be recruited, and retained adults were older, heavier, and exhibited more extensive anatomical damage than did recruits. Our data seem to indicate a population characterized by limited recruitment of juveniles (particularly of clonemates) and an adult population exhibiting considerable turnover from year to year, but with a core of individuals who are long-term residents.  相似文献
