The structure of the dermal pectoral girdle of teleostean fishes is analyzed in relation to its functions. In bony fishes the vertebral column, with a horizontal axis, and the pectoral girdle, with a basically vertical axis, form the only skeletal links between the head and the body. The individual bones of the dermal girdle are considered as supporting units joined by a series of articulations that permit differential movement between adjacent bones. The movements mediated by this linkage system are: lateral swinging of the head relative to the body, expansion of the distance between the central areas of the two pectoral girdles to permit passage of large food items, and fore-and-aft movements of the anteroventral ends of the cleithra relative to the skull. Among other factors affecting the structure of the dermal pectoral girdle are the provision for the support of the pectoral fin base and the requirement for the effective operation of a sleeve valve between the girdle and the opercular cover.
Modifications of the dermal pectoral girdle in ostariophysine fishes are discussed. A brief history of the bony fish girdle in terms of its functional components is postulated.  相似文献

Interspecific morph variations in trophic morphology related to skull-bones and head traits is associated to ecological segregation of Arctic charr morphs (genus Salvelinus) in two sub-arctic lakes (Fjellfrøsvatn and Skogsfjordvatn, Norway). The replicated morph pair, the profundal spawning benthivorous PB-morph and the littoral spawning omnivorous LO-morph of Arctic charr, diverge along the shallow-deep-water resource axis. In Skogsfjordvatn there is also a profundal spawning piscivorous PP-morph. The PB-morphs from both lakes have similar skull-bone traits and head morphology such as elongated jaw-bones, small opercular bones and relatively longer heads. The PP-morph also has an elongated head, relatively small opercular bones as well as larger jaw-bones. In contrast, the LO-morphs in both lakes have shorter jaw-bones, larger opercular bones in addition to relatively small heads. However, some small non-parallel differences exist among the morphs from the two lakes. Overall, all profundal morphs (PB and PP) have relatively similar skull-bone structures, suggesting adaptations to the deep-water environment but also to their separated dietary niches. There is strong evidence for parallel evolution with some local adaptations in skull-bones and head morphology of the PB-morph and the LO-morph from separate lakes.  相似文献

An appropriate organisation of muscles is crucial for their function, yet it is not known how functionally related muscles are coordinated with each other during development. In this study, we show that the development of a subset of functionally related head muscles in the zebrafish is regulated by Ret tyrosine kinase signalling. Three genes in the Ret pathway (gfra3, artemin2 and ret) are required specifically for the development of muscles attaching to the opercular bone (gill cover), but not other adjacent muscles. In animals lacking Ret or Gfra3 function, myogenic gene expression is reduced in forming opercular muscles, but not in non-opercular muscles derived from the same muscle anlagen. These animals have a normal skeleton with small or missing opercular muscles and tightly closed mouths. Myogenic defects correlate with a highly restricted expression of artn2, gfra3 and ret in mesenchymal cells in and around the forming opercular muscles. ret(+) cells become restricted to the forming opercular muscles and a loss of Ret signalling results in reductions of only these, but not adjacent, muscles, revealing a specific role of Ret in a subset of head muscles. We propose that Ret signalling regulates myogenesis in head muscles in a modular manner and that this is achieved by restricting Ret function to a subset of muscle precursors.  相似文献

Observations have been made on the hatching behaviour of the larva of the monogenean Entobdella soleae and on the effects of various enzymes on the opercular cement of the egg. These observations indicate that hatching is brought about by a proteolytic hatching fluid which is produced by two pairs of ventral head glands and spread over the inner surface of the opercular joint by rotation of the larva about its longitudinal axis. After hatching there is no trace of the ventral head glands. Similar glands are present before hatching in the oncomiracidium of E. hippoglossi.  相似文献

We cloned and sequenced the complete mitochondrial genome of Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). A circular 17,090 bp mitochondrial genome from the flounder contains 37 structural genes as in other vertebrates so far reported. This is the first report of the complete mitochondrial sequence from a higher teleostean fish (Acanthopterygii). The organization including gene order is quite similar to that of other teleostean fishes as well as placental mammals. The putative control region of the Japanese flounder mitochondrial genome contains a length variable region of about a 74 bp tandem repeat cluster. As a preliminary study we adopted the maximum likelihood and neighbor-joining inference methods to examine phylogenetic relationships among teleostean and related fishes. Comparisons of amino acid sequences of protein-coding genes and nucleotide sequences of tRNA genes resolved some middle to deep branches among some teleostean fishes. The flounder mitochondrial genome does not show an indication of evolutionary rate difference among teleosts leading to difficulty in phylogenetic analyses, and our data is useful for future evolutionary studies dealing with higher teleostean fishes.  相似文献

Scanning and transmission electron microscopy were used to investigate the fine structure of the sperm of the sparid fish Pagellus bogaraveo.The spermatozoon of P. bogaraveo belongs, like that of the other sparid fish, to the teleostean “type I” spermatozoon with the flagellar axis insert perpendicular to the nuclear fossa. It has an ovoidal head, a short, cylindrically shaped midpiece and a long tail region. The nucleus reveals a deep invagination (nuclear fossa), in which the centriolar complex is located, and a satellite nuclear notch shaped like a golf club. The two centrioles are perpendicular to each other and show a conventional “9+0” pattern. The distal centriole is attached to the nuclear envelope by means of basal feet and radial fibers made of electron-dense material. Below the basal plate, plasma membrane pinches in, and the necklace, a specialized connection joining axonemal doublets to the plasma membrane, is visible. The short midpiece houses one mitochondrion. The flagellum is perpendicularly and eccentrically with respect to the nucleus and contains the conventional “9+2” axoneme.  相似文献

Osteology, myology and motion analysis of the head of the anabantoid fish Helostoma temmincki, a specialized filter feeder, has revealed six functional units: neurocranium, suspensory apparatus, opercular apparatus, hyoid apparatus, branchial apparatus and pectoral girdle. Interactions between the functional units take place through four couplings involved in opening and protruding the jaws. The first coupling is activated in the beginning of the opening cycle by the levator operculi muscle through the opercular apparatus, interoperculomandibular ligament and mandible. The second is activated during feeding by contraction of the sternohyoideus through the hyoid apparatus, interopercular, interoperculomandibular ligament and mandible. The third coupling is active during feeding and “kissing” by contraction of epaxial muscles through mediation of the neurocranium to the jaw apparatus. The fourth coupling is the only one active during air intake and involves contraction of the levator arcus palatini which abducts and rotates the suspensory apparatus forwards, causing the mandible to drop. The retention of isolated ancestral characters during mosaic evolution are explained in terms of the maintenance of couplings which represent functional associations of seemingly remote structures. When natural selection acts on one component of a functional unit or coupling, it essentially acts on all associated elements simultaneously causing character complexes to evolve in common evolutionary trends. It is feasible that functional analysis can separate primary from secondary evolutionary trends.  相似文献

Many fish, including the fighting fish Betta splendens , perform a display in which the opercula are extended away from the head and gills. Previous work has shown that opercular display rates by male B. splendens decrease under conditions of reduced dissolved oxygen (hypoxia). We tested the hypothesis that the ability to maintain opercular display rates under hypoxic conditions is related to body condition in male B. splendens . We also tested the hypothesis that females would show a greater preference for males performing this display under hypoxic conditions, when the display should be a more reliable indicator of male phenotypic quality. We found no evidence to support either hypothesis. Male opercular display rate in hypoxic conditions was unrelated to natural or experimentally induced variation in body condition. Female B. splendens showed no differential preference for the opercular display, assessed through the use of computer animated male stimuli, in either acute or chronic hypoxia. We conclude that the presence of an air-breathing organ in this species makes the opercular display an unreliable signal of male quality as measured by body condition.  相似文献

Background

Owls have developed serrations, comb-like structures, along the leading edge of their wings. Serrations were investigated from a morphological and a mechanical point of view, but were not yet quantitatively compared for different species. Such a comparative investigation of serrations from species of different sizes and activity patterns may provide new information about the function of the serrations.

Results

Serrations on complete wings and on tenth primary remiges of seven owl species were investigated. Small, middle-sized, and large owl species were investigated as well as species being more active during the day and owls being more active during the night. Serrations occurred at the outer parts of the wings, predominantly at tenth primary remiges, but also on further wing feathers in most species. Serration tips were oriented away from the feather rachis so that they faced into the air stream during flight. The serrations of nocturnal owl species were higher developed as demonstrated by a larger inclination angle (the angle between the base of the barb and the rachis), a larger tip displacement angle (the angle between the tip of the serration and the base of the serration) and a longer length. Putting the measured data into a clustering algorithm yielded dendrograms that suggested a strong influence of activity pattern, but only a weak influence of size on the development of the serrations.

Conclusions

Serrations are supposed to be involved in noise reduction during flight and also depend on the aerodynamic properties that in turn depend on body size. Since especially nocturnal owls have to rely on hearing during prey capture, the more pronounced serrations of nocturnal species lend further support to the notion that serrations have an important function in noise reduction. The differences in shape of the serrations investigated indicate that a silent flight requires well-developed serrations.  相似文献

Several surfperches (Embiotocidae), including the black surfperch, Embiotoca jacksoni, exhibit a specialized prey handling behavior known as winnowing, in which ingested food and non-nutritive debris are separated within the oropharyngeal cavity. Prey items are swallowed, and unpalatable material is ejected from the mouth. Winnowing is believed to play an important role in the partitioning of food resources among sympatric embiotocids. We present a mechanistic model for this separative prey processing based on high-speed video analysis, cineradiography, electromyography, and buccal and opercular cavity pressure transducer recording. Winnowing by embiotocids is characterized by premaxillary protrusions repeated cyclically with reduced oral gape. Protrusion is accompanied by depression of the hyoid apparatus and adduction of the opercula. Alternating expansion and contraction of the buccal and opercular cavities generate regular pressure waveforms that indicate bidirectional water flow during processing. Separation of food from debris by Embiotoca jacksoni occurs in three phases. The prey-debris bolus is transported anteriorly and posteriorly within the oropharyngeal cavity and is then sheared by the pharyngeal jaws. Mechanical processing is complemented by the rinsing action of water currents during hydraulic prey transport. The feeding apparatus of Embiotoca jacksoni is functionally versatile, although not obviously specialized relative to that of nonwinnowing surfperches. Protrusion of the premaxillae and depression of the hyoid apparatus are critical to both prey capture and subsequent prey processing. The pharyngeal jaws exhibit kinematic patterns during separation of food from debris distinct from those observed during mastication of uncontaminated prey. This behavioral flexibility facilitates resource partitioning and the coexistence of E. jacksoni in sympatric embiotocid assemblages.  相似文献

A new species of the genus Glyptothorax, Glyptothorax obliquimaculatus sp. nov. is described from the Xiaohei River, a tributary of the Nanting River, Salween drainage, in southwestern Yunnan province, China. This new species can be distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characteristics: unculiferous ridges of the thoracic adhesive apparatus extending anteriorly onto the gular region; body with irregular dark blotches scattered along lateral surface (blotches mostly oblique); skin smooth on head and body; dorsal spine smooth without serrations on its posterior margin; lips smooth; posterior margin of pectoral spine with 7–8 serrations; dorsal-fin base 11.0–13.2% SL; pectoral-fin length 15.6–19.6% SL; depth of caudal peduncle 8.6–9.8% SL; head width 19.1–24.0% SL; nasal barbel length 23.3–33.3% HL.  相似文献

Waterfowl (Aves, Anseriformes) constitute an ancient global radiation, and understanding the pattern and timing of their evolution requires a well-corroborated phylogeny including extant species and fossils. Following the molecular advances in avian systematics, however, morphology has often been held as misleading, yet congruence with molecular data has been shown to vary considerably among different skeletal parts. Here, we explore phylogenetic signal in discrete characters of the lacrimal/ectethmoid region of waterfowl, which is highly variable among species and constitutes a rich source of data. We do so by combining cladistic and multivariate approaches, and using phylogenetic comparative methods. We quantitatively recognize three major morphological types among lacrimal bones, and discuss homoplasy and potential synapomorphies of major clades using a molecular backbone tree. Our results clearly indicate that the lacrimal bone carries substantial phylogenetic signal and could be of systematic value at different levels of the phylogeny of waterfowl, feeding the exploration of other regions of the skull with this combined approach.  相似文献

Trichomycteridae is a well‐corroborated catfish family that comprises about 300 valid species distributed in eight subfamilies. The phyletic status of the Trichomycterinae is uncertain, with different hypothesis regarding the position of the miniaturized Trichomycterus hasemani group. This group comprises four valid species, and neither its monophyly nor its positioning among the Trichomycteridae was tested in a phylogenetic framework. Bayesian Inference and Maximum Likelihood analyses of a molecular data set comprising the mitochondrial genes 12S and 16S and the nuclear genes H3, MYH6 and RAG2 (2983 bp) for 26 taxa highly supported the miniature catfish T. hasemani group as monophyletic and sister to the Tridentinae, consequently recognized as a new genus of this subfamily. Potamoglanis gen. nov. is diagnosed by seven character states: an angle of 35–40° between the main longitudinal axis of the head and the main axis of the autopalatine; thin tubular shape of the second ceratobranchial; presence of six or seven anal‐fin rays; eyes dorsally placed on head; opercular and interopercular odontodes patches not juxtaposed; absence of a distal process on the hyomandibula and presence of a long process on the anterior region of the hyomandibula. Potamoglanis gen. nov is similar to the Tridentinae genera by the presence of a wide cranial fontanelle; presence of a short ventral process in the opercular bone and by the origin of the dorsal fin placed in a vertical through the anal‐fin origin.  相似文献

Cibarial armatures of mosquitoes act mechanically on the ingested erythrocytes producing the haemolysis of part of the blood meal. The extent of haemolysis, in blood meals examined immediately after ingestion, is less than 5% in mosquitoes without cibarial armature or with “primitive” types of cibarial armature, while up to 50% haemolysis is observed in mosquitoes with more highly evolved types of cibarial armature. Such high levels of haemolysis are produced by the passage of the blood through the mosquito head but not by the incubation of the blood with salivary gland and midgut homogenates from the same mosquito or by injection of the blood into the intestine via the anus.  相似文献

The feeding apparatus of Syngnathidae, with its elongate tubular snout and tiny, toothless jaws, is highly specialized for performing fast and powerful pivot feeding. In addition, the prolonged syngnathid parental care probably enables the juveniles to be provided with a feeding apparatus that resembles the one in adults, both in morphology and function. In this study, a landmark‐based geometric morphometric analysis was carried out on the head of syngnathid representatives in order to (1) examine to what degree pipefish shape variation is different from that of seahorses; (2) determine whether the high level of specialization reduces the amount of intraspecific morphological variation found within the family; and (3) elucidate whether or not important shape changes occur in the seahorse head during postrelease ontogeny. We found that (1) there is a significant shape difference between head shape of pipefish and seahorse: the main differences concern snout length and height, position and orientation of the pectoral fin base, and height of the head and opercular bone. We hypothesize that this might be related to different prey capture kinematics (long snout with little head rotation versus short snout with large head rotation) and to different body postures (in line with the head versus vertical with a tilted head) in pipefishes and seahorses; (2) both pipefishes and seahorses showed an inverse relation between relative snout length and intraspecific variation and although pipefishes show a large diversity in relative snout elongation, they are more constrained in terms of head shape; and (3) the head of juvenile Hippocampus reidi specimens still undergoes gradual shape changes after being expelled from the brood pouch. Following opercular amputation in Pomatoceros lamarckii Quatrefages, wound healing is initiated from a predetermined point on the peduncle. The events of abscission, cell migration and cuticle deposition during wound healing have been studied by light and electron microscopy. Abscission occurs at a predetermined point on the peduncle indicated by specialized epidermal cells, the easy break-point cells (EBP). Following detachment of tissues distal to the EBP cells, the resultant wound is plugged by a knot of coelomocytes which provide a substratum over which epidermal cells migrate to seal and restore the epidermis. During their migration, the epidermal cells undergo differentiation and deposit a new cuticle. Cuticle formation is initiated by the deposition of a finely filamentous matrix. The fine filaments subsequently coalesce to form thicker fibrils which become aggregated into layers of orthogonally-arranged fibril bundles. The mechanisms involved in abscission, cell migration and cuticle deposition during wound healing of the opercular filament are discussed.  相似文献

Dark melanic color pattern elements, such as bars, stripes, and spots, are common in the skin of fishes, and result from the differential distribution and activity of melanin‐containing chromatophores (melanophores). We determined the histological basis of two melanic color pattern elements in the integument of the Firemouth Cichlid, Thorichthys meeki. Vertical bars on the flanks were formed by three layers of dermal melanophores, whereas opercular spots were formed by four layers (two lateral and two medial) in the integument surrounding the opercular bones. Pretreatment of opercular tissue with potassium and sodium salts effectively concentrated or dispersed intracellular melanosomes. Synopsis The species composition of acanthopterygian fishes in warm-temperate communities of the northeastern Pacific reflects the influence of ecological relations on teleostean evolution. The species are of either temperate or tropical derivation, with the temperate derivatives (e.g., scorpaeniforms, pleuronectiforms and zoarcoid perciforms) being mostly generalized carnivores, and the tropical derivatives (almost all of them perciforms) ranging from generalized carnivores to a diversity of specialized carnivores and herbivores. The tropical group dominates, with species of the labroid families Pomacentridae, Embiotocidae and Labridae being especially prominent, based mainly on specialized abilities to feed on sessile invertebrates and zooplankters. Other perciforms of tropical stock that do well here include kyphosids, which are herbivores. These trophic capabilities have been inherited from tropical ancestors and are poorly developed among the temperate derivatives. Despite their successes in warm-temperate habitats, few tropical derivatives have extended their distributions into the cold-temperate region; similarly, temperate derivatives have been to a large extent limited in spreading southward into the warm-temperate region. These limits to distribution cannot be attributed to problems with food resources, but are readily explained by effects of surface currents on early life-history stages in this coastal upwelling system.  相似文献
