Endurance training of older men: responses to submaximal exercise.   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The purpose of this study was to quantify the exercise response of older subjects on a time-to-fatigue (TTF) submaximal performance test before and after a training program. Eight older men (67.4 +/- 4.8 yr) performed two maximal treadmill tests to determine maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) and ventilation threshold (TVE) and a constant-load submaximal exercise treadmill test that required an oxygen uptake (VO2) between TVE and VO2max. The submaximal test, performed at the same absolute work rate before and after the training program, was performed to volitional fatigue to measure endurance time. The men trained under supervision at an individualized pace representing approximately 70% of VO2max (80% maximum heart rate) for 1 h, four times per week for 9 wk. Significant increases were demonstrated for VO2max (ml.kg-1.min-1; 10.6%); maximal ventilation (VE, l/min; 11.6%), and TVE (l/min; 9.8%). Weight decreased 2.1%. Performance time on the TTF test increased by 180% (7.3 +/- 3.0 to 20.4 +/- 13.5 min). The similar end points for VO2, VE, and heart rate during the TTF and maximal treadmill tests established that the TTF test was stopped because of physiological limitations. The increase in performance time among the subjects was significantly correlated with improvements in VO2max and TVE, with the submaximal work rate representing a VO2 above TVE by 88% of the difference between TVE and VO2max pretraining and 73% of this difference on posttraining values.  相似文献

Seven men and four women (age 63 +/- 2 yr, mean +/- SD, range 61-67 yr) participated in a 12-mo endurance training program to determine the effects of low-intensity (LI) and high-intensity (HI) training on the blood lactate response to submaximal exercise in older individuals. Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), blood lactate, O2 uptake (VO2), heart rate (HR), ventilation (VE), and respiratory exchange ratio (R) during three submaximal exercise bouts (65-90% VO2max) were determined before training, after 6 mo of LI training, and after an additional 6 mo of HI training. VO2max (ml X kg-1 X min-1) was increased 12% after LI training (P less than 0.05), while HI training induced a further increase of 18% (P less than 0.01). Lactate, HR, VE, and R were significantly lower (P less than 0.05) at the same absolute work rates after LI training, while HI training induced further but smaller reductions in these parameters (P greater than 0.05). In general, at the same relative work rates (ie., % of VO2max) after training, lactate was lower or unchanged, HR and R were unchanged, and VO2 and VE were higher. These findings indicate that LI training in older individuals results in adaptations in the response to submaximal exercise that are similar to those observed in younger populations and that additional higher intensity training results in further but less-marked changes.  相似文献

This study determined the effects of endurance or resistance exercise training on maximal O2 consumption (VO2max) and the cardiovascular responses to exercise of 70- to 79-yr-old men and women. Healthy untrained subjects were randomly assigned to a control group (n = 12) or to an endurance (n = 16) or resistance training group (n = 19). Training consisted of three sessions per week for 26 wk. Resistance training consisted of one set of 8-12 repetitions on 10 Nautilus machines. Endurance training consisted of 40 min at 50-70% VO2max and at 75-85% VO2max for the first and last 13 wk of training, respectively. The endurance training group increased its VO2max by 16% during the first 13 wk of training and by a total of 22% after 26 wk of training; this group also increased its maximal O2 pulse, systolic blood pressure, and ventilation, and decreased its heart rate and perceived exertion during submaximal exercise. The resistance training group did not elicit significant changes in VO2max or in other maximal or submaximal cardiovascular responses despite eliciting 9 and 18% increases in lower and upper body strength, respectively. Thus healthy men and women in their 70s can respond to prolonged endurance exercise training with adaptations similar to those of younger individuals. Resistance training in older individuals has no effect on cardiovascular responses to submaximal or maximal treadmill exercise.  相似文献

Measurements of cardiac performance for humans at various ages is influenced by the variable examined, the population and techniques employed, and the factors that co-vary with age, including the presence of disease and physical conditioning. Interstudy differences in the extent to which occult coronary disease is present in older subjects and in the level of physical conditioning among subjects may underlie the variable perspectives contained in the literature of how aging affects cardiovascular function. In carefully screened, highly motivated but not athletically trained community-dwelling subjects, resting cardiovascular parameters are not age related except for systolic blood pressure, which increases with age. During vigorous exercise the mechanisms used to achieve a high level of cardiac output shift from a dependence on a catecholamine-mediated increase in heart rate and inotropy to a dependence on the Frank Starling mechanism. One reason for the age difference in cardiovascular response to exercise may be a diminished responsiveness to beta-adrenergic stimulation in these subjects. In other elderly subjects who cannot exercise to high work loads, a decline in stroke volume as well as heart rate at peak exercise has been observed. Whether the inability of these individuals to augment stroke volume is caused by a decrease in the ability of the heart to increase diastolic filling, by a decrease in systolic pump function caused by an increased afterload, by intrinsic myocardial contractile defects, or by a greater diminution of the cardiovascular response to beta-adrenergic stimuli is presently unknown.  相似文献

We assessed the effects of aerobic and/or resistance training on thermoregulatory responses in older men and analyzed the results in relation to the changes in peak oxygen consumption rate (VO(2 peak)) and blood volume (BV). Twenty-three older men [age, 64 +/- 1 (SE) yr; VO(2 peak), 32.7 +/- 1.1 ml. kg(-1). min(-1)] were divided into three training regimens for 18 wk: control (C; n = 7), aerobic training (AT; n = 8), and resistance training (RT; n = 8). Subjects in C were allowed to perform walking of ~10,000 steps/day, 6-7 days/wk. Subjects in AT exercised on a cycle ergometer at 50-80% VO(2 peak) for 60 min/day, 3 days/wk, in addition to the walking. Subjects in RT performed a resistance exercise, including knee extension and flexion at 60-80% of one repetition maximum, two to three sets of eight repetitions per day, 3 days/wk, in addition to the walking. After 18 wk of training, VO(2 peak) increased by 5.2 +/- 3.4% in C (P > 0.07), 20.0 +/- 2.5% in AT (P < 0.0001), and 9.7 +/- 5.1% in RT (P < 0.003), but BV remained unchanged in all trials. In addition, the esophageal temperature (T(es)) thresholds for forearm skin vasodilation and sweating, determined during 30-min exercise of 60% VO(2 peak) at 30 degrees C, decreased in AT (P < 0.02) and RT (P < 0.02) but not in C (P > 0.2). In contrast, the slopes of forearm skin vascular conductance/T(es) and sweat rate/T(es) remained unchanged in all trials, but both increased in subjects with increased BV irrespective of trials with significant correlations between the changes in the slopes and BV (P < 0.005 and P < 0.0005, respectively). Thus aerobic and/or resistance training in older men increased VO(2 peak) and lowered T(es) thresholds for forearm skin vasodilation and sweating but did not increase BV. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the increase in skin vasodilation and sweating at a given increase in T(es) was more associated with BV than with VO(2 peak).  相似文献

Plasma albumin is well known to decrease in response to inflammation. The rate of albumin synthesis from both liver and plasma was measured in vivo by use of a large dose of L-[(2)H(3)-(14)C]valine in rats injected intravenously with live Escherichia coli and in pair-fed control rats during the acute-phase period (2 days postinfection). The plasma albumin concentration was reduced by 50% in infected rats compared with pair-fed animals. Infection induced a fall in both liver albumin mRNA levels and albumin synthesis relative to total liver protein synthesis. However, absolute liver albumin synthesis rate (ASR) was not affected by infection. In plasma, albumin fractional synthesis rate was increased by 50% in infected animals compared with pair-fed animals. The albumin ASR estimated in the plasma was similar in the two groups. These results suggest that hypoalbuminemia is not due to reduced albumin synthesis during sepsis. Moreover, liver and plasma albumin ASR were similar. Therefore, albumin synthesis measured in the plasma is a good indicator of liver albumin synthesis.  相似文献

To determine whether endurance exercise training can alter the beta-adrenergic-stimulated inotropic response in older women, we studied 10 postmenopausal healthy women (65.4 +/- 0.9 yr old) who exercised for 11 mo. Left ventricular (LV) function was evaluated with two-dimensional echocardiography during infusion of isoproterenol after atropine. Maximal O(2) consumption increased 23% in response to training (from 1.35 +/- 0.06 to 1.66 +/- 0.07 l/min; P = 0.004). Training had no effect on baseline LV function, end-diastolic diameter, LV wall thickness, or LV mass. The increase in LV systolic function in response to isoproterenol was unaffected by training. Furthermore, neither the systolic shortening-to-end-systolic wall stress relationship nor the end-systolic wall stress-to-end-systolic diameter relationship during isoproterenol infusion changed with training. We conclude that older postmenopausal women can increase their maximal O(2) consumption with exercise training without eccentric LV hypertrophy or enhancement of beta-adrenergic-mediated LV contractile function. These observations provide an explanation for the finding that maximal cardiac output and stroke volume are not increased in older women in response to training.  相似文献

To determine whether aerobic conditioning alters the orthostatic responses of older subjects, cardiovascular performance was monitored during graded lower body negative pressure in nine highly trained male senior athletes (A) aged 59-73 yr [maximum O2 uptake (VO2 max) = 52.4 +/- 1.7 ml.kg-1 x min-1] and nine age-matched control subjects (C) (VO2 max = 31.0 +/- 2.9 ml.kg-1 x min-1). Cardiac volumes were determined from gated blood pool scintigrams by use of 99mTc-labeled erythrocytes. During lower body negative pressure (0 to -50 mmHg), left ventricular end-diastolic and end-systolic volume indexes and stroke volume index decreased in both groups while heart rate increased. The decreases in cardiac volumes and mean arterial pressure and the increase in heart rate between 0 and -50 mmHg were significantly less in A than in C. For example, end-diastolic volume index decreased by 32 +/- 4 ml in C vs. 14 +/- 2 ml in A (P < 0.01), mean arterial pressure declined 7 +/- 5 mmHg in C and increased by 5 +/- 3 mmHg in A (P < 0.05), and heart rate increased 13 +/- 3 beats/min in C and 7 +/- 1 beats/min in A (P < 0.05). These data suggest that increased VO2 max among older men is associated with improved orthostatic responses.  相似文献

Orthotopic heart transplantation (OHT) represents an effective alternative for individuals with end-stage heart disease. The current literature reports only the responses of OHT patients to greater than or equal to 4 mo of exercise training (ET) and frequently lacks adequate controls. Most programs currently treating OHT patients usually provide 6-12 wk of ET. This study describes the effects of a 10-wk supervised ET program in 12 male OHT patients and 5 other male OHT patients who served as a comparison group. Graded exercise tests were performed before and after ET. After ET, maximal O2 consumption was significantly greater for the ET group than the comparison group (P less than 0.05) and the mean increase in peak heart rate was 18 +/- 4 and 6 +/- 4 (SE) min-1 for ET and comparison groups, respectively (P less than 0.05). Maximal ventilation was also significantly greater for the ET group at after ET, while resting heart rate and blood pressure and peak blood pressure, O2 pulse, respiratory rate, and ventilatory equivalents for O2 and CO2 were not significantly changed. We conclude that after OHT a 10-wk ET program improves maximal O2 consumption and, by improving peak heart rate, improves O2 delivery.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effects of aging and endurance training on the metabolic responses of trained and sedentary young (age 20-32 yr) and older (age 60-70 yr) men to exercise at the same relative exercise stress (70% of maximal O2 consumption). Plasma growth hormone concentrations at rest were similar in all four groups, but both older groups had an attenuated response to exercise. The older trained men appeared to have avoided the age-associated changes that were evident in their sedentary peers with respect to resting plasma insulin, C-peptide, and norepinephrine concentrations. Plasma glucagon concentrations were lower in both older subject groups at rest. Both sedentary groups decreased their plasma glucose concentrations and increased their plasma glucagon concentrations during exercise, whereas the trained groups had increases in their plasma glucose concentrations but had no change in their glucagon concentrations. Thus, although the concentrations of some hormones at rest and during submaximal exercise are unaffected by aging or by training, others are markedly altered by aging, training, or the interaction of the two. However, it appears that older healthy sedentary men undergo less physiological stress than young untrained men during submaximal exercise at the same relative exercise intensity, and they have no responses that would contraindicate their participation in exercise of the duration and intensity usually prescribed in exercise-training programs.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the acute responses of several hormones [total and free testosterone (TT and FT, respectively), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisol (C), growth hormone (GH), and insulin (INS)] to a single bout of heavy resistance exercise (HRE). Eight younger [30-year (30y) group] and nine older [62-year (62y) group] men matched for general physical characteristics and activity levels performed four sets of ten repetitions maximum (RM) squats with 90 s rest between sets. Blood samples were obtained from each subject via an indwelling cannula with a saline lock pre-exercise, immediately post-exercise (IP), and 5, 15 and 30 min post-exercise. Levels of TT, FT, ACTH, C and lactate significantly increased after HRE for both groups. Pre-HRE pairwise differences between groups were noted only for FT, while post-HRE pairwise differences were found for TT, FT, GH, glucose and lactate. Area under the curve analysis showed that the 30y group had a significantly higher magnitude of increase over the entire recovery period (IP, 5, 15, and 30 min post-exercise) for TT, FT, ACTH and GH. Few changes occurred in the INS response with the only change being that the 62y group demonstrated a decrease IP. Lactate remained elevated at 30 min post-HRE. This investigation demonstrates that age-related differences occur in the endocrine response to HRE, and the most striking changes appear evident in the FT response to HRE in physically active young and older men. Two types of cold pressor tests were used to study gender differences in cardiovascular and plasma catecholamine responses. Ten male and ten female, young, healthy Caucasian subjects participated. The tests consisted of (1) 5 degrees C air blown at 3.5-4 m/s onto part of the face for 4 min and (2) the open right hand immersed to the wrist in water at 5 degrees C for 4 min. Heart rate, blood pressure (BP), and venous plasma norepinephrine were collected before, during, and 5 min after the 4 min of cold exposures. Test order was decided by a Latin square design, and the subjects rested in a quiet room for 30 min between the two tests. All parameters demonstrated significant (p less than 0.01) increases from rest during the cold tests. Gender differences were significant (p less than 0.01) in diastolic and systolic BP in each test with the males having a greater response, but gender differences were not found in heart rate or norepinephrine concentration. The study demonstrated that gender differences exist in the blood pressure responses to local cold, but that the mechanisms involved do not include a parallel difference in heart rate or venous plasma norepinephrine concentration.  相似文献

To assess the effects of endurance training on plasma glucose kinetics during moderate-intensity exercise in men, seven men were studied before and after 12 wk of strenuous exercise training (3 days/wk running, 3 days/wk cycling). After priming of the glucose and bicarbonate pools, [U-13C] glucose was infused continuously during 2 h of cycle ergometer exercise at 60% of pretraining peak O2 uptake (VO2) to determine glucose turnover and oxidation. Training increased cycle ergometer peak VO2 by 23% and decreased the respiratory exchange ratio during the final 30 min of exercise from 0.89 +/- 0.01 to 0.85 +/- 0.01 (SE) (P less than 0.001). Plasma glucose turnover during exercise decreased from 44.6 +/- 3.5 mumol.kg fat-free mass (FFM)-1.min-1 before training to 31.5 +/- 4.3 after training (P less than 0.001), whereas plasma glucose clearance (i.e., rate of disappearance/plasma glucose concentration) fell from 9.5 +/- 0.6 to 6.4 +/- 0.8 ml.kg FFM-1.min-1 (P less than 0.001). Oxidation of plasma-derived glucose, which accounted for approximately 90% of plasma glucose disappearance in both the untrained and trained states, decreased from 41.1 +/- 3.4 mumol.kg FFM-1.min-1 before training to 27.7 +/- 4.8 after training (P less than 0.001). This decrease could account for roughly one-half of the total reduction in the amount of carbohydrate utilized during the final 30 min of exercise in the trained compared with the untrained state.  相似文献

To investigate splenic erythrocyte volume after exercise and the effect on hematocrit- and hemoglobin-based plasma volume equations, nine men cycled at an intensity of 60% maximal O(2) uptake for 5-, 10-, or 15-min duration, followed by an incremental ride to exhaustion. The reduction in spleen volume, calculated using (99m)Tc-labeled erythrocytes, was not significantly different among the three submaximal rides (5 min = 28%, 10 min = 30%, 15 min = 36%; P = 0.26). The incremental ride to exhaustion resulted in a 56% reduction in spleen volume, which recovered to baseline levels within 20 min. Plasma catecholamines were inversely related to spleen volume after exercise (r = 0.70-0.84; P < 0.0001). There were no differences in red cell or total blood volume pre- to postexercise; however, a significant reduction in plasma volume was observed (18.9%; P < 0.01). There was no difference between the iodinated albumin and the hematocrit and hemoglobin methods of assessing plasma volume changes. These results suggest that the spleen regulates its volume in response to an intensity-dependent signal, and plasma catecholamines appear partially responsible. Splenic release of erythrocytes has no effect on indirect measures of plasma volume.  相似文献

The plasma adrenaline ([A]) and noradrenaline ([NA]) concentration responses of nine men and eight women were investigated in four resistance exercise tests (E80, E60, E40 and E20), in which the subjects had to perform a maximal number of bilateral knee extension-flexion movements at a given cycle pace of 0.5 Hz, but at different load levels (80%, 60%, 40% and 20% of 1 repetition maximum, respectively). The four test sessions were separated by a minimal interval of 3 rest days. The number of repetitions (Repmax), the total work (Wtot) done normalized for the lean body mass and the heart rate (HR) responses were similar in the two groups in each test. In addition, no differences were found between the two groups in [A] and [NA] either before or after the exercise tests. The postexercise [NA], both in the men [10.8 (SD 7.0) nmol x l(-1)] and in the women [11.7 (SD 7.4) nmol x l(-1)], was clearly the highest in E20, where also the Repmax, WtOt, the total amount of integrated electromyograph activity in the agonist muscles and the peak postexercise blood lactate concentration [men 8.3 (SD 1.6) vs women 7.3 (SD 0.9) mmol x l(-1), ns] were significantly higher than in the other tests. Although the postexercise [A] in E20 both in the men [7.1 (SD 6.0) nmol x l(-1)] and in the women [5.2 (SD 2.0) nmol x l(-1)] were higher than in E80 [men 3.1 (SD 4.2), women 2.1 (SD 2.0) nmol x l(-l)] (P < 0.05), they were not significantly different from E60 [men 3.6 (SD 1.9), women 4.0 (SD 3.3) nmol x l(-1)] and E40 [men 3.8 (SD 4.1), women 5.8 (SD 4.0) nmol x l(-1)] in either group. The present study did not indicate any sex differences in performance and in plasma catecholamine responses in different exhausting resistance exercise tests performed with the knee extensor muscles. In both groups the plasma [NA] response was clearly the largest in the longest exercise with the greatest amount of muscle activity and work done, and with the largest blood lactate response. The differences in the plasma [A] responses between the exercises tended to be somewhat smaller.  相似文献
