This study examined the rates of gastric emptying for water and 13 different carbohydrate-containing solutions in seven subjects, using conventional gastric intubation techniques. The rates of gastric emptying for water and a 10% glucose-polymer solution were also measured during 90 min of treadmill running at 75% of each subject's maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max). At rest, 15% glucose-polymer (P) and fructose (F) solutions emptied more rapidly from the stomach and provided a faster rate of carbohydrate delivery than did a 15% glucose (G) solution (p less than 0.05). The G solutions showed a constant energy delivery rate of 3.3 kcal.min-1; energy delivery from P and F solutions rose with increasing solution concentrations. The osmolality of the gastric aspirate predicted the rate of gastric emptying for all solutions (p less than 0.05) but overestimated rates of emptying for 10% and 15% P solutions and underestimated emptying rates for 10% and 15% F solutions. Exercise at 75% VO2max decreased the rate of gastric emptying of water but not of 10% P solutions. Thus the different rates of gastric emptying for different carbohydrate-containing solutions were not entirely explained by differences in osmolality. Furthermore, exercise may have different effects on the gastric emptying rates of water and carbohydrate solutions.  相似文献

After a meal, the proximal stomach relaxes probably through the activation of nitrergic neurons in the gastric wall. Nitric oxide-induced smooth muscle relaxation involves activation of soluble guanylate cyclase, with cGMP production, which is then degradated by phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5). The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of sildenafil, a selective PDE-5 inhibitor, on fasting and postprandial proximal gastric volume and on gastric emptying rates in humans. A gastric barostat was used to study gastric compliance and perception to isobaric distension in healthy subjects before and after placebo (n = 13) or sildenafil, 50 mg (n = 15). In 10 healthy subjects, two gastric barostat studies were performed in randomized order to study the effect of placebo or sildenafil on postprandial gastric relaxation. Similarly, solid and liquid gastric emptying rates were studied in 12 healthy subjects. Sildenafil significantly increased fasting intragastric volume (141 +/- 15 vs. 163 +/- 15 ml, P < 0.05) and volumes of first perception. Sildenafil induced a higher and prolonged gastric relaxation either at 30 min (357 +/- 38 vs. 253 +/- 42 ml, P < 0.05) or 60 min (348 +/- 49 vs. 247 +/- 38 ml, P < 0.05) after the meal. Sildenafil did not alter solid half-emptying time but significantly delayed liquid emptying (43 +/- 4 vs. 56 +/- 4 min, P < 0.01). In conclusion, sildenafil significantly increases postprandial gastric volume and slows liquid emptying rate, confirming that meal-induced accommodation in humans involves the activation of a nitrergic pathway. The effect of sildenafil on gastric fundus suggests a therapeutic potential for phosphodiesterase inhibitors in patients with impaired gastric accommodation.  相似文献

Obese CCK-1 receptor-lacking Otsuka Long Evans Tokushima fatty (OLETF) rats are hyperphagic relative to control, nonmutant Long Evans Tokushima Otsuka (LETO) rats. This study sought to assess whether the overeating observed in OLETF rats is associated with changes in gastric emptying rates or detection of gastric volume. We performed experiments in both 12- and 29-wk-old OLETF and LETO rats to address possible alterations in gastric functions during the development of increased body weight and blood glucose abnormalities in OLETF rats. Gastric emptying of a 5-g solid chow test meal was not significantly different between strains at either 1, 2, or 4 h postmeal. When rats with ad libitum access to chow were tested, there were no significant differences in gastric emptying between strains at any time period despite OLETF rats consuming significantly more chow than LETO rats. Similar to solid food, 5-min gastric emptying of a 5-ml isosmotic and hyperosmotic saline or glucose load was not significantly different between strains. When the stomach was distended with a 15-ml semisolid chow load, there was no significance difference in emptying at either 1 or 2 h. No significant differences in gastric emptying were detected between 12- and 29-wk-old rats under any conditions. Both young and old OLETF rats, however, reduced sham intake significantly less compared with LETO rats during a brief period of gastric distension by 5- or 10-ml balloon inflation. Finally, OLETF rats showed decreased Fos expression in the nucleus of the solitary tract relative to LETO rats after an 8-ml gastric distension. These findings demonstrate that OLETF rats do not express deficits in controlling gastric emptying rates; however, they exhibit decreased behavioral and vagal responsiveness to gastric distension that may contribute to the increased meal size in these animals.  相似文献

Gastric emptying studies were performed on nine healthy volunteers and ten duodenal ulcer (DU) patients utilizing a dual radionuclide technique to assess simultaneously emptying rates of liquid (111In labeled water) and solid (99mTc sulfur colloid labeled chicken liver) components of a meal. One gram of sucralfate was compared to placebo in separate days in a randomized double-blind crossover fashion. Subjects ingested the radiolabeled test meal 1 h after receiving medication, and gastric emptying was monitored for 3 h using a γ camera interfaced with a computer. We found that DU patients had significantly faster gastric emptying of solids (P < 0.05) compared to normals on the placebo days, while liquid emptying rates were similar. Sucralfate, in the DU patients, significantly (P < 0.05) slowed gastric emptying of water from 20 to 40 min and emptying of the solid component from 100–160 min after the meal compared to placebo. In normal subjects, gastric emptying of liquids and solids was not significantly affected by sucralfate.We conclude that slowing of gastric emptying, possibly mediated through aluminum ions, occurs in DU patients on sucralfate. This may be one mechanism by which sucralfate enhances healing and decreases recurrence of duodenal ulcer.  相似文献

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to characterize the volumes and rates of gastric emptying of both liquid and gas following the ingestion of beverages of varying carbonation and carbohydrate levels. Eight subjects drank 800 ml each of four test beverages in a counterbalanced order: water, a non-carbonated carbohydrate-electrolyte solution (NC), a lightly carbonated carbohydrate-electrolyte solution (PC), and a carbonated cola (CC). T2-weighted, echoplanar images (25-30 contiguous slices, 1 cm thick, 256 x 128 matrix, TE = 80, 40 cm FOV) of the abdomen were collected at minutes 3,110, 20, 30, 45, and 60 following beverage ingestion. Images were analyzed for gas and liquid volumes. Water and NC emptied the most rapidly, with half times of 21(3) and 31(3) min, respectively [mean (SE)]. PC emptied significantly slower [47 (6) min] and CC slower yet [107 (8) min]. The carbonation content of the beverage accounted for 84% of the variation in emptying time, whereas carbohydrate content did not account for any significant variation. The gastric gas volume of the CC was higher at 2 min post-ingestion compared with all other drinks; however, the rate of emptying of the gas was the same among all beverages. Significantly greater total gastric volumes (gas+ liquid) were associated with the ingestion of CC, and accordingly produced a greater severity of gastric distress, as evaluated with a gastric distress inventory. The high gastric gas volumes (approximately 600 ml) after ingestion of CC suggested a potential source of error in body composition using standard hydrostatic weighing methods. This prediction was tested in nine additional subjects. Ingestion of 800 ml of CC prior to hydrostatic weighing resulted in a 0.7% underestimate of body density and thus an 11% overestimate of percentage body fat compared to measurements made before beverage consumption.  相似文献

The gastric emptying time (G.E.T.) in turbot was investigated using X-radiography and was found to decrease with temperature. Small fish processed a given ration, expressed as percent body weight, faster than large fish (G.E.T. was found to be proportional to (fish weight)0.364). Large meals in a given fish were processed at a faster rate than small meals. Gastric emptying rate (G.E.R.) was found to be proportional to (meal size g)0.613 at 8° C and (meal size g)0.788 at 19° C. These exponents are in agreement with a recently proposed model relating G.E.T. and G.E.R. to meal size (Fänge & Grove, 1978). Large fish emptied a meal of given absolute size from the stomach at a faster rate (g h−1) than small fish. Experimental meals diluted with kaolin were evacuated in significantly less time than a control diet, suggesting that turbot may adjust feeding rates when food quality varies.  相似文献

The effects of two enkephalinase inhibitors (thiorphan and acétorphan) and DALAMIDE on gastric emptying of fat or non-fat meals were evaluated in mice. When administered intraperitonally at low doses (0.1 and 0.2 mg/kg) 30 min prior to a fatty (milk) meal, both thiorphan and acetorphan increased significantly (P less than 0.01) gastric emptying; these effects were maximal for 0.2 and 0.1 mg/kg respectively and decreased progressively to be not significant for doses higher than 5 mg/kg for thiorphan and 0.5 mg/kg for acetorphan. Similarly DALAMIDE given IP increased significantly (P less than 0.05) gastric emptying at doses of 0.5 and 1 mg/kg while a slowing of gastric emptying was obtained for 10 times higher doses. The effects of thiorphan (0.2 mg/kg) and DALAMIDE (0.5 mg/kg) were blocked by previous administration of naloxone (0.3 mg/kg) and methyl-naloxone (0.5 mg/kg) while only naloxone (0.3 mg/kg) blocked the slowing effect of high dose of DALAMIDE. Administered prior to a non-fat meal, thiorphan (1 mg/kg) stimulated gastric emptying and inhibited it at higher dosage (10 mg/kg). Neither acetorphan nor DALAMIDE at similar dosages affected the gastric emptying of a non-fat meal and the effects of thiorphan (1 and 0.1 mg/kg) were not blocked by naloxone (0.3 mg/kg). It is concluded that enkephalinase inhibitors (thiorphan and acetorphan) administered systemically stimulate the gastric emptying of a fat meal by increasing enkephalin levels in peripheral tissues, while thiorphan exhibits non-opiate effects on gastric emptying of a non-fat meal.  相似文献

Noninvasive imaging has been developed to measure gastric volumes. The relationship between gastric emptying and volume postprandially is unclear. The aims were to 1) develop a 3-dimensional (3D) single photon emission-computed tomography (SPECT) method to simultaneously measure gastric volume and emptying postprandially, 2) describe the course of gastric volume change during emptying of the meal, and 3) assess a 3D method measuring gastric emptying. In 30 healthy volunteers, we used (111)In-planar and (99m)Tc-SPECT imaging to estimate gastric emptying and volume after a radiolabeled meal. A customized analysis program of SPECT imaging assessed gastric emptying. A Bland-Altman plot assessed the performance of the new SPECT analysis compared with planar analysis. Gastric volume postprandially exceeds the fasting volume plus meal volume. The course of volume change and gastric emptying differ over time. Higher differences in volumes exist relative to fasting plus residual meal volumes at 15 min (median 763 vs. 568 ml, respectively, P < 0.001), 1 h (median 632 vs. 524 ml, P < 0.001), and 2 h (median 518 vs. 428 ml, P < 0.02), in contrast to similar volumes at 3 h (median 320 vs. 314 ml, P = 0.85). Analysis of SPECT imaging accurately measures gastric emptying compared with planar imaging with median differences of 1% (IQR -2.25 to 2.0) at 1 h, 1% (-3.25 to 2.25) at 2 h, and -2.5% (-4 to 0) at 3 h. Gastric volume exceeds meal volume during the first 2 postprandial hours, and simultaneous measurements of gastric volume and emptying can be achieved with a novel 3D SPECT method.  相似文献

CCK influences satiation and gastric and gallbladder emptying. GI181771X is a novel oral CCK-1 agonist; its effects on gastric emptying of solids, accommodation, and postprandial symptoms are unclear. Effects of four dose levels of the oral CCK-1 agonist GI181771X and placebo on gastric functions and postprandial symptoms were compared in 61 healthy men and women in a randomized, gender-stratified, double-blind, double-dummy placebo-controlled, parallel group study. Effects of 0.1, 0.5, and 1.5 mg of oral solution and a 5.0-mg tablet of GI181771X on gastric emptying of solids by scintigraphy, gastric volume by (99m)Tc-single photon emission computed tomographic imaging, maximum tolerated volume of Ensure, and postprandial nausea, bloating, fullness, and pain were studied. On each of 3 study days, participants received their randomly assigned treatment. Adverse effects and safety were monitored. There were overall group effects of GI181771X on gastric emptying (P < 0.01) and fasting and postprandial volumes (P = 0.036 and 0.015, respectively). The 1.5-mg oral solution of GI181771X significantly delayed gastric emptying of solids (P < 0.01) and increased fasting (P = 0.035) gastric volumes without altering postprandial (P = 0.056) gastric volumes or postprandial symptoms relative to placebo. The effect of the 5.0-mg tablet on gastric emptying of solids did not reach significance (P = 0.052). Pharmacokinetic profiles showed the highest area under the curve over 4 h for the 1.5-mg solution and a similar area under the curve for the 0.5-mg solution and 5-mg tablet. Adverse effects were predominantly gastrointestinal and occurred in a minority of participants. GI181771X delays gastric emptying of solids and exhibits an acceptable safety profile in healthy participants. CCK-1 receptors can be modulated to increase fasting gastric volume.  相似文献

The effects of ginseng, ginsenosides, coffee, and caffeine on 75% ethanol induced sleeping in mice were examined. Mice treated with ethanol lost their righting reflex within 30 min and this lasted for about 4 h. The onset time of lose of righting reflex (LR) in mice pre-treated with ginseng, ginsenosides, coffee or caffeine 10 min before ethanol was significantly delayed; whereas the duration of sleep was not affected by all treatments. Administration of these agents 10 min after ethanol was ineffective in counteracting the LR effect of ethanol. Coffee and caffeine produced central stimulation and increased locomotor activity. Ginseng and ginsenosides were found to enhance exercise endurance and reduced the plasma level of ethanol. Gastric emptying was slowed by ginseng, ginsenosides or ethanol administration. An additive effect was observed when the mice were pre-treated with ginseng or ginsenosides 10 min before ethanol administration. It is suggested that ginseng decreased plasma ethanol concentration by delaying gastric emptying and this may be partly due to the effect of the ginsenosides.  相似文献

The effects of macronutrients on gastric volume changes, emptying, and gastrointestinal symptoms are incompletely understood. Three liquid meals of 500 ml (fat emulsion, 375 kcal; protein solution, 375 kcal; glucose solution, 400 kcal) were infused into the stomach of 12 healthy volunteers on three occasions. Studies were performed in seated body position using an open-configuration magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system. MRI imaging sequences, assessing stomach and meal volumes, were performed prior to and at times t = 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 25, 35, 45, 60, 75, and 90 min after meal administration. Areas under the curve for the early emptying phase (0-15 and 0-45 min) were calculated, and characteristics of the volume curves were analyzed by a gastric emptying model. Gastrointestinal symptoms were assessed by a self-report scale. Initial (t = 0 min) and early postprandial gastric volumes were highest for glucose because of lower initial emptying. However, in the early emptying phase the characteristics of the volume curves for stomach and meal were uniform for all macronutrients. Perceptions of fullness and satiety were linearly associated with postprandial gastric volumes, but not with macronutrient composition. Isovolumic macronutrient meals modulate gastric volume response by initial meal emptying patterns. Macronutrient specific accommodation responses, as shown in barostat studies, are not reflected as gastric volume responses under noninvasive conditions.  相似文献

Cholecystokinin (CCK), acting at CCK1 receptors (CCK1Rs) on intestinal vagal afferent terminals, has been implicated in the control of gastrointestinal function and food intake. Using CCK1R(-/-) mice, we tested the hypothesis that lipid-induced activation of the vagal afferent pathway and intestinal feedback of gastric function is CCK1R dependent. In anesthetized CCK1R(+/+) ("wild type") mice, meal-stimulated gastric acid secretion was inhibited by intestinal lipid infusion; this was abolished in CCK1R(-/-) mice. Gastric emptying of whole egg, measured by nuclear scintigraphy in awake mice, was significantly faster in CCK1R(-/-) than CCK1R(+/+) mice. Gastric emptying of chow was significantly slowed in response to administration of CCK-8 (22 pmol) in CCK1R(+/+) but not CCK1R(-/-) mice. Activation of the vagal afferent pathway was measured by immunohistochemical localization of Fos protein in the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS; a region where vagal afferents terminate). CCK-8 (22 pmol ip) increased neuronal Fos expression in the NTS of fasted CCK1R(+/+) mice; CCK-induced Fos expression was reduced by 97% in CCK1R(-/-) compared with CCK1R(+/+) mice. Intralipid (0.2 ml of 20% Intralipid and 0.04 g lipid), but not saline, gavage increased Fos expression in the NTS of fasted CCK1R(+/+) mice; lipid-induced Fos expression was decreased by 47% in CCK1R(-/-) compared with CCK1R(+/+)mice. We conclude that intestinal lipid activates the vagal afferent pathway, decreases gastric acid secretion, and delays gastric emptying via a CCK1R-dependent mechanism. Thus, despite a relatively normal phenotype, intestinal feedback in response to lipid is severely impaired in these mice.  相似文献

Animal studies on diabetic gastroparesis are limited by inability to follow gastric emptying changes in the same mouse. The study aim was to validate a nonlethal gastric emptying method in nonobese diabetic (NOD) LtJ mice, a model of type 1 diabetes, and study sequential changes with age and early diabetic status. The reliability and responsiveness of a [(13)C]octanoic acid breath test in NOD LtJ mice was tested, and the test was used to measure solid gastric emptying in NOD LtJ mice and nonobese diabetes resistant (NOR) LtJ mice. The (13)C breath test produced results similar to postmortem recovery of a meal. Bethanechol accelerated gastric emptying [control: 92 +/- 9 min; bethanechol: 53 +/- 3 min, mean half emptying time (T(1/2)) +/- SE], and atropine slowed gastric emptying (control: 92 +/- 9 min; atropine: 184 +/- 31 min, mean T(1/2) +/- SE). Normal gastric emptying (T(1/2)) in nondiabetic NOD LtJ mice (8-12 wk) was 91 +/- 2 min. Aging had differing effects on gastric emptying in NOD LtJ and NOR LtJ mice. Onset of diabetes was accompanied by accelerated gastric emptying during weeks 1-2 of diabetes. Gastric emptying returned to normal by weeks 3-5 with no delay. The [(13)C]octanoic acid breath test accurately measures gastric emptying in NOD LtJ mice, is useful to study the time course of changes in gastric emptying in diabetic NOD LtJ mice, and is able to detect acceleration in gastric emptying early in diabetes. Opposing changes in gastric emptying between NOD LtJ and NOR LtJ mice suggest that NOR LtJ mice are not good controls for the study of gastric emptying in NOD LtJ mice.  相似文献

Intestinal perfusion studies have shown that glucose absorption from maltose occurs faster than from isocaloric glucose. To determine whether ingested maltose might be a superior source of carbohydrate (CHO) for endurance athletes, we compared the rates of gastric emptying, absorption and oxidation of 15 g.100 ml-1 solutions of maltose and glucose. Six endurance-trained cyclists drank 1200 ml of either U-14C maltose or U-14C glucose as a 400-ml loading bolus immediately before exercise, and as 8 x 100-ml drinks at 10-min intervals during a 90-min ride at 70% of maximal oxygen consumption. The rates of gastric emptying [maltose 690 (SD 119) ml.90 min-1; glucose 655 (SD 93) ml.90 min-1], the appearance of U-14C label in the plasma, and the peak rates of exogenous CHO oxidation [maltose 1.0 (SD 0.09) g.min-1; glucose 0.9 (SD 0.09) g.min-1] were not significantly different. Further, the 51 (SD 8) g of maltose and the 49 (SD 9) g of glucose oxidised during exercise were similar. Each accounted for approximately 20% of the total CHO oxidised during the 90 min of exercise. Since only half of the CHO delivered to the intestine was oxidised in the 90-min ride (maltose 49%; glucose 50%), we conclude that neither the rate of gastric emptying, nor digestion limited the rate of ingested CHO utilisation during the early stages of exercise.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Background

Cystic fibrosis (CF) has many effects on the gastrointestinal tract and a common problem in this disease is poor nutrition. In the CF mouse there is an innate immune response with a large influx of mast cells into the muscularis externa of the small intestine and gastrointestinal dysmotility. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential role of mast cells in gastrointestinal dysmotility using the CF mouse (Cftrtm1UNC, Cftr knockout).

Methodology

Wild type (WT) and CF mice were treated for 3 weeks with mast cell stabilizing drugs (ketotifen, cromolyn, doxantrazole) or were treated acutely with a mast cell activator (compound 48/80). Gastrointestinal transit was measured using gavage of a fluorescent tracer.

Results

In CF mice gastric emptying at 20 min post-gavage did not differ from WT, but was significantly less than in WT at 90 min post-gavage. Gastric emptying was significantly increased in WT mice by doxantrazole, but none of the mast cell stabilizers had any significant effect on gastric emptying in CF mice. Mast cell activation significantly enhanced gastric emptying in WT mice but not in CF mice. Small intestinal transit was significantly less in CF mice as compared to WT. Of the mast cell stabilizers, only doxantrazole significantly affected small intestinal transit in WT mice and none had any effect in CF mice. Mast cell activation resulted in a small but significant increase in small intestinal transit in CF mice but not WT mice.

Conclusions

The results indicate that mast cells are not involved in gastrointestinal dysmotility but their activation can stimulate small intestinal transit in cystic fibrosis.  相似文献

This study was designed to determine the rates of gastric emptying of water, saline and a 20% glucose solution in patients with gastric and duodenal ulcers. In all subjects, gastric emptying was fastest after administration of the saline, slower with water and the slowest with glucose. Significant statistical differences (p less than 0.05) in emptying rates between normal subjects and the group with duodenal ulcer were seen when water and saline but not glucose were used. We conclude that inhibitory effects of the osmotic receptors are not changed in gastric and duodenal ulcer patients. However, the emptying rates were higher when osmotic stimulus was withheld.  相似文献

The glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) analog ROSE-010 reduced pain during acute exacerbations of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Our objective was to assess effects of ROSE-010 on several gastrointestinal (GI) motor and bowel functions in constipation-predominant IBS (IBS-C). In a single-center, randomized, parallel-group, double-blind, placebo-controlled, dose-response study, we evaluated safety, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacokinetics in female patients with IBS-C. ROSE-010 (30, 100, or 300 μg sc) or matching placebo was administered once daily for 3 consecutive days and on 1 day 2-10 days later. We measured GI and colonic transit by validated scintigraphy and gastric volumes by single-photon emission computed tomography. The primary end points were half time of gastric emptying of solids, colonic transit geometric center at 24 h, and gastric accommodation volume. Analysis included intent-to-treat principle, analysis of covariance (with body mass index as covariate), and Dunnett-Hsu test for multiple comparisons. Exposure to ROSE-010 was approximately dose-proportional across the dose range tested. Demographic data in four treatment groups of female IBS-C patients (total 46) were not different. Gastric emptying was significantly retarded by 100 and 300 μg of ROSE-010. There were no significant effects of ROSE-010 on gastric volumes, small bowel or colonic transit at 24 h, or bowel functions. The 30- and 100-μg doses accelerated colonic transit at 48 h. Adverse effects were nausea (P < 0.001 vs. placebo) and vomiting (P = 0.008 vs. placebo). Laboratory safety results were not clinically significant. In IBS-C, ROSE-010 delayed gastric emptying of solids but did not retard colonic transit or alter gastric accommodation; the accelerated colonic transit at 48 h with 30 and 100 μg of ROSE-010 suggests potential for relief of constipation in IBS-C.  相似文献

The effects of exercise on gastric emptying remain controversial, with some workers reporting that heavy exercise inhibits it to varying degrees whereas others report no effects up to an intensity of 70% maximal oxygen consumption (O2max). The state of hydration of the subjects and the environmental conditions may influence the rate of gastric emptying during exercise. To understand further the effects of a 3-h, 16-km walk/run carrying 30 kg of equipment under field conditions at 39°C, we estimated gastric emptying using a [13C]acetate breath test method. Breath samples were collected at intervals after giving 150 mg of [13C]acetate. The effects of giving a standard volume (530 ml) of water or dextrose (7.5 g · 100 ml−1) with electrolytes or fructose/corn solids (7.5 g · 100 ml−1) at rest before exercise were compared with those of exercise and of recovery after exercise with or without extra fluids (400 ml each 20 min). At rest, after a standard 530-ml load, gastric emptying times [mean (SE)] were: 37 (2) min (water), 46 (3) min (dextrose/electrolytes) and 47 (5) min (fructose/corn solids) and were significantly slower (P < 0.05) than those occurring after extra fluid ingestion, i.e. 32 (3), 39 (2) and 41 (3) min respectively. After a standard 530-ml load, emptying times during exercise were almost identical to those at rest but, during exercise, extra fluid speeded up gastric emptying more than at rest to 24 (2), 26 (1) and 27 (5) min (P < 0.05) respectively. During resting recovery without extra fluids, gastric emptying was significantly slowed to 60 (2), 71 (5) and 78 (3) min, respectively. Although emptying times during recovery from exercise with extra fluid were faster [49 (6), 55 (2) and 58 (4) min, respectively], they were still slower than before exercise. The results suggest that: (1) extra fluid increases gastric emptying more during exercise than at rest, and (2) gastric emptying during resting recovery from exercise is slower than at rest before exercise whether or not fluid has previously been taken. Two-year-old 1·5-kg rainbow trout were held in cages and conditioned by feeding either on low-fat chopped herring (H trout) or dry pellets (P trout) for 15 weeks. Their satiation amounts were then determined under standard conditions. On a wet weight basis H trout ate 2·5-3·5 times more food than P trout; this was sufficient to compensate for the high water content of herring and thereby maintain the dry matter intake. When P trout were offered herring (PH trout) they consumed more food than when offered dry pellets but not as much as H trout. Stomach capacity restricted the intake and their dry matter intake was reduced by c. 40%. When H trout were offered dry pellets (HP trout) they adjusted their intake immediately close to the level of P trout although their larger stomachs could have accommodated more than twice this volume of dry food. The return of appetite after a satiation meal was almost linear with time. Appetite increased at c. 556 mg g-1 body weight h-1 for H trout and at 142 mg g-1 bw h-1 for P trout. The return of appetite in PH trout was significantly slower (c. 370 mg g-1 bw h-1) than in H trout; the previous dietary history of the PH trout limited their capacity to process larger volumes of wet food in a single meal. Fish offered dry diet (P and HP trout) had similar rates of appetite return despite their previous feeding history suggesting that the property of the dry feed itself might limit meal size. The total gastric emptying time of diets of similar dry matter content (with and without large amounts of water) was similar, but the delay time before gastric emptying starts tended to be longer for dry diets. Dry pellets appear to impose a demand for water that prolongs the gastric delay. This water demand is met partly by drinking since the trout fed on dry pellets drank significantly more (436 ± 189 mg kg-1 h-1) than unfed and herring-fed trout which drank little or not at all (65 ± 113 and 70 ± 66 mg kg-1 h-1 respectively). Dietary water facilitated food processing and increased daily dry matter intake of trout when fed four times a day. When only one satiation meal per day was allowed, dietary water had no effect. It is concluded from this work that, in addition to gastric volume, a short-term limitation on the size of satiation meals in the rainbow trout is the availability of water to moisturize the food and thus to promote gastric digestion and emptying.  相似文献
