Female phonotaxis in túngara(Physalaemus pustulosus)and cricket (Acris crepitans) frogsis biased toward male advertisementcalls or call components of lowerfrequency. This behavioralbias might result in part from a mismatch betweenthe spectralcharacteristics of the advertisement call and the most sensitivefrequencyof the peripheral end organ implicated in reception of thesesounds.In both species, females are tuned to frequencies lowerthan average for thecalls in their population. This mismatch,however, represents the situationduring short-distance communication.Female frogs can also use the call todetect choruses at longdistances, and the spectral distribution of callenergy canvary with transmission distance. We used computer simulationstotest the hypothesis that there is a better match betweentuning and callspectral energy at long distances from the callingmale than at shortdistances by comparing the performance (soundenergy received) of the naturaltuning curve relative to anoptimal tuning curve (i.e., one centered at thecall's dominantfrequency). The relative performance of the natural tuningcurveincreased with distance in túngarafrogs. For the twosubspecies of cricket frogs, however, the relativeperformancedecreased at longer distances. The performance did not equaltheoptimal tuning curve at the distances tested. The resultsindicate that therelationship between calls and auditory tuningcannot be optimal for both longand short distance reception.The relationship between female tuning and calldominant frequencymay represent a compromise between short and long distancecommunication,and the bias toward short or long distances may vary amongspecies. 相似文献

Advertisement calls of the cricket frog, Acris crepitans , show statistically significant variation among populations in all call variables measured. Call variables show strong clinal variation resulting in calls of lower frequency, longer duration and slower call rates produced by A. c. blanchardi in open habitat in the west of the range, and calls of higher frequency, shorter calls and faster call rates produced by A. c. crepitans in the pine forests in the eastern part of the range. This clinal variation does not result from pleiotropic effects of body size or any other morphological characters we measured.
The two subspecies usually reside in different habitats, but some A. c. blanchardi reside in an isolated pine forest in central Texas. By comparing the calls of this subspecies in open and forest habitat, and by statistically removing the effects of clinal variation for all populations, we determined that habitat explains some of the variation in call structure; this is not true of subspecies.
Our data reject several hypotheses that purport to explain the evolution of mate recognition signals. (1) We reject the notion of Paterson and others that there is strong stabilizing selection on species-specific mate recognition signals. We used an anuran acoustic communication system to test a predictionof the "fluctuating asymmetries/good genes" hypothesis thatfemales prefer more symmetric mates because symmetry indicatesgenetic quality. Mate preferences of female cricket frogs (Acriscrepitans) can be influenced by three call characters: dominantfrequency, numbers of pulses per call, and number of pulse groupsper call. We tested the hypothesis that these preferences resultin females preferring more symmetric males. We measured fluctuatingasymmetries of characters not involved with the communicationsystem (head and tibia), and those involved in signal production(laryngeal characters) and signal reception (aural characters).We determined whether the asymmetries in these characters wererelated to the three variables that enhance call attractiveness.Most of the multiple regression models showed no significantassociation between the fluctuating asymmetries of charactersand any of the calls. The regression of head and tibia fluctuatingasymmetry on pulse number was significant, but partial regressioncoefficients revealed that more pulses were associated witha more symmetric head length and a less symmetric tibia length.Our findings provide little or no support for the fluctuatingasymmetries/good genes hypothesis. We emphasize, however, thatthis hypothesis should not be abandoned based on negative resultsof a single study, but deserves further scrutiny. 相似文献

We have isolated and characterized 17 tetranucleotide microsatellite loci for Blanchard's cricket frog (Acris crepitans blanchardi), an anuran common in the central USA. Sixteen loci were organized into four multiplex amplification reactions. These loci were highly polymorphic when screened in 55 individuals from two distant populations, with 11–48 alleles per locus (average = 24.8). Observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.18 to 0.97 and from 0.17 to 0.96, respectively. Nine loci were also polymorphic in Acris crepitans crepitans, with seven polymorphic in Acris gryllus. Five loci amplified in all three taxa. These loci will be useful for population‐ and species‐level investigations of this widespread group. 相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Tadpoles of Acris crepitans were collected from two ponds in central Illinois, Depth, water temperature, distance from shore and water samples were taken at each sample site. The potential for food limitation and non-random habitat selection were examined.
2. Algal densities from water samples averaged over 1.0× 106 cells ml−1 in Scott's pond hut only 4.6×103 cells ml−1 in Vic's pond.
3. Guts of tadpoles from Scott's pond contained more algal cells than did guts of tadpoles from Vic's pond. Tadpoles from Scott's pond were consistently larger and more advanced in development than tadpoles collected from Vic's pond at the same lime. Male crickets (Teleogryllus oceanicus) produce a complex call consisting of two elements, the long chirp (three to eight sound pulses) followed by a series of short chirps (each with two sound pulses). There is significant geographic variation in the temporal structure of calls, and the long chirp is selected against by acoustically orienting parasitoids in some populations. Here we examine geographic variation in female preference functions for the amount of long chirp. In general, females prefer calls with greater proportions of long chirp, although the strength and nature of selection varied across populations. Variation in preference functions did not match variation in call structure. There was a mismatch between the proportion of long chirp produced by males in a population and the proportion of long chirp preferred by females. The convergent preferences of predators and females are likely to maintain genetic variation in song traits in parasitized populations. The apparent mismatch between preference and trait is discussed in relation to theoretical models of preference evolution. 相似文献

The northern cricket frog (Acris crepitans) is a resident of streams, rivers, and wetlands of eastern North America. We documented abnormalities in A. crepitans housed in the Arkansas State University Museum of Zoology Herpetology Collection. Abnormality frequency increased from 1957 to 2000 (chi 2 = 43.76, df = 3, P < 0.001). From 1957 through 1979 only 3.33% of specimens were unusual. This rate was 6.87% during the 1990s, and in 2000 it was 8.48%. High frequencies of abnormalities were identified in the following Ozark highland counties: Sharp, Lawrence, and Randolph. We observed 104 abnormalities among 1,464 frogs (7.10%). The differential abnormality frequencies observed between the Arkansas lowlands and highlands are striking. The Ozarks had significantly higher frequencies of abnormalities than other Arkansas regions (chi 2 = 59.76, df = 4, P < 0.001). The Ouachita Mountains had significantly higher frequencies than the Gulf Coastal Plain, Delta, or Arkansas River Valley (chi 2 = 13.172, df = 3, P < 0.01). There was no difference in abnormality frequency between the Gulf Coastal Plain, Delta, and Arkansas River Valley (chi 2 = 0.422, df = 2, P > 0.70). Proposed hypotheses for distributions include: 1) A. crepitans might possess naturally high abnormality levels, and land use practices of the Delta may reduce this variability; 2) an unknown xenobiotic may be in Ozark streams causing increased numbers of abnormalities; 3) the museum's collection effort may be skewed; 4) Delta habitat might be more favorable for green tree frogs (Hyla cinerea) allowing this species to drive out A. crepitans through competition; here, abnormal metamorphs are not detected because they are even less competitive than normal individuals. 相似文献

Nine karyotypes are described within a single species of common New Zealand tree weta. Their diploid numbers range from 11 to 25. The distribution of the karyotypes suggests that each had a single origin except the 17-karyotype which was the most common karyotype and had a disjunct distribution. The overall level of allozyme diversity observed is similar to that seen within many widespread taxa. The distribution of allozyme alleles did not coincide with the distribution of karyotypes within this species and the Neighbour-Joining tree was not concordant with the chromosome based sub-divisions of the species. Thus, no evidence was found to suggest that chromosomal differentiation has been acting as a barrier to the flow of alleles within H. thoracica. The lack of concordance of genetic markers is thought to result from rapid chromosome radiation and reticulate evolution. Northland peninsula of North Island, New Zealand is a region of high chromosomal and allozymic diversity in H. thoracica. This may have resulted from geographic isolation during the Pliocene when Northland formed an archipelago of many small low-lying islands. 相似文献

We studied intraspecific variation in samara morphology and flight behavior within and among parent trees of Acer saccharinum (silver maple), with a particular focus on the effect of samara shape. Samara mass, area, wing loading, and descent rate from a 4.5-m indoor balcony were measured for 50 undamaged mature samaras from each of six parents. We found significant differences among parental types for all morphological variables and descent rate. These differences yielded a 50% range in mean dispersal potential among the six parents. There was a strong linear correlation between descent rate and square root of wing loading when mean values were plotted for each of the six parental types. But there was considerable within-parent variation for all measured variables, including substantial nonallometric variation in wing loading caused in part by poor correlations between wing area and fruit weight. Parents also differed widely in the relationship between square root of wing loading and descent rate (linear r2 = 0.150-0.788), with one parental type showing no significant relationship. Fruits from the same parent with similar values of the square root of wing loading showed as much as a 75-100% difference in descent rate. The usefulness of mass : area indices such as wing loading is limited by its exclusion of aerodynamically important factors such as mass distribution and wing shape, which in our case caused the six parents to behave aerodynamically almost as if they were six separate species. 相似文献

Melanin is a widespread pigment causing variation in skin darkness, with darker phenotypes typically reaching higher equilibrium temperatures than lighter ones. Therefore, selection is expected to favour darker phenotypes in colder environments. In the present study, we show intraspecific variation in pupal (and wing) melanization along an altitudinal gradient in two species of copper butterflies. Both, pupal and wing melanization increased with increasing altitude. Consistent with the thermal melanism hypothesis, darker (high-altitude) pupae reached higher equilibrium temperatures than paler (low-altitude) ones. However, as temperature differences were rather small despite pronounced differences in melanization, we cannot rule out that factors (e.g. ultraviolet protection, disease resistance) other than temperature comprise the principal selective agents. Mechanistically, variation in melanization might be related to variation in hormone titres, as demonstrated by low-altitude pupae showing higher ecdysteroid and juvenile hormone titres compared to high-altitude ones. The processing of leaves in temperate streams has been the subject of numerous studies but equivalent tropical ecosystems have received little attention. We investigated leaf breakdown of a tropical tree species (Hura crepitans, Euphorbiaceae), in a tropical stream using leaf bags (0.5 mm mesh) over a period of 24 days. We followed the loss of mass and the changes in adenosine triphosphate (ATP) concentrations and respiration rates associated with the decomposing leaves. The breakdown rate was fast (k=?0.0672/d, kd=?0.0031/degree‐day), with 81 percent loss of the initial mass within 24 days. This high rate was probably related to the stable and high water temperature (22°C) favoring strong biological activity. Respiration rates increased until day 16 (1.1 mg O2/h/g AFDM), but maximum ATP concentrations were attained at day 9 (725 nmol ATP/g AFDM) when leaf mass remaining was 52 percent. To determine the relative importance of fungi and bacteria during leaf decomposition, ATP concentrations, and respiration rates were determined in samples treated with antibiotics, after incubation in the stream. The results of the samples treated with the antifungal or the bacterial antibiotic suggest a higher contribution of the fungal community for total microbial biomass and a higher contribution of the bacterial community for microbial respiration rates, especially during the later stages of leaf decomposition. However, these results should be analyzed with caution since both antibacterial and antifungal agents did not totally eliminate microbial activity and biomass. 相似文献

The mechanosensory lateral line system of fishes is an important organ system conveying information crucial to individual fitness. Yet, our knowledge of lateral line diversity is almost exclusively based on interspecific studies, whereas intraspecific variability and possible population divergence have remained largely unexplored. We investigated lateral line system variability in four marine and five pond populations of nine-spined stickleback (Pungitius pungitius). We found significant differences in neuromast number between pond and marine fish. In particular, three of seventeen lateral line regions (viz. caudal peduncle superficial neuromasts; canal neuromasts from the anterior trunk and caudal peduncle) showed strong divergence between habitats. Similar results were obtained with laboratory-reared individuals from a subset of populations, suggesting that the patterns found in nature likely have a genetic basis. Interestingly, we also found habitat-dependent population divergence in neuromast variability, with pond populations showing greater heterogeneity than marine populations, although only in wild-caught fish. A comparison of neutral genetic (F(ST)) and phenotypic (P(ST)) differentiation suggested that natural selection is likely associated with habitat-dependent divergence in neuromast counts. Hence, the results align with the conclusion that the mechanosensory lateral line system divergence among marine and pond nine-spined sticklebacks is adaptive. 相似文献

Intraspecific life‐history variations of Viola brevistipulata var. brevistipulata were examined with special reference to reproductive features based on quantitative and qualitative monitoring of chasmogamous (CH) and cleistogamous (CL) flowers. We selected 10 populations in southwestern Hokkaido in common deciduous forests, and marked 40–70 individual plants at each population. Marked individuals were monitored every 1–2 weeks. The expression of CH and CL flowers was distinct among the populations. That is, there were populations consisting of plants with only CH flowers, while other populations produced CL flowers after CH flowers with greater shoot longevity This phenomenon was observed even in populations located at the same site. The results suggest that V. brevistipulata var. brevistipulata shows distinct life‐history variations among the populations. 相似文献

Clones of Spartina patens were collected from 19 locations throughout Gulf coast marshes of Texas, Louisiana, and Florida. Following three vegetative generations of de-acclimation from field conditions, genotypes were subjected to a salinity screening protocol in which salinity was increased in weekly increments of 5‰ (gram salt/kilogram solution). Plants were harvested when there was 50% death of aboveground tissue, which we defined as the lethal salinity level. The genotypes displayed highly significant intraspecific variation in lethal salinity level, which ranged from 63‰ to 93‰. Significant intraspecific variation was also observed in all plant morphological variables, as well as leaf rolling, leaf expansion rates at 2‰ and 20‰ salinity, aboveground, belowground, and total biomass, and belowground-to-aboveground biomass ratio. An ANOVA of principal component scores from a PCA of lethal salinity level and covariable-adjusted total plant dry mass further illustrated intraspecific variation within this species in these two traits expressed as one principal component. Correlation analysis revealed that intraspecific variation in salt tolerance was not strongly associated with intraspecific variation in plant morphological traits, leaf rolling, or leaf expansion rates. 相似文献

Male mating strategies respond to female availability such that variation in resources that affect spatial distribution can also alter cost–benefit tradeoffs within a population. In arid‐adapted species, rainfall alters reproduction, behavior, morphology, and population density such that populations differing in resource availability may also differ in successful reproductive strategies. Here, we compare two populations of Cape ground squirrels (Xerus inauris), a sub‐Saharan species with year‐round breeding and intense mating competition. Unlike most mammals where males resort to aggressive interactions over females, male X. inauris are tolerant of one another, relying instead on other nonaggressive pre‐ and postcopulatory strategies to determine reproductive success. Our findings suggest that differences in resource availability affect female distribution, which ultimately leads to intraspecific variation in male reproductive tactics and sexual morphology. Sperm competition, assessed by reproductive morphometrics, was more pronounced in our high resource site where females were distributed evenly across the landscape, whereas dominance seemed to be an important determinant of success in our low resource site where females were more aggregated. Both sites had similar mating intensities, and most males did not sire any offspring. However, our low resource site had a higher variance in fertilization success with fewer males siring multiple offspring compared with our high resource site where more individuals were successful. Our results lend support to resource models where variations in female spatial distribution attributed to environmental resources ultimately impact male reproductive behaviors and morphology. 相似文献

Aphodius dung beetles produce substrate vibrations by means of an abdomino-alary stridulatory organ. Applying a method that allows the recording of Aphodius vibrations under natural conditions in a small amount of dung, the stridulatory behavior of Aphodius ater was investigated. Male A. ater are acoustically active, while females rarely stridulate. Males have a complex song, which consists of a series of different patterns that are displayed in a specific order over a considerable time when a female is encountered in the dung. Different populations show the same stridulatory patterns but individual variability is high and males display songs with differing complexity. It is hypothesized that females use the information within the song in the context of mate choice. 相似文献

Quantitative genetic theory assumes that trade-offs are best represented by bivariate normal distributions. This theory predicts that selection will shift the trade-off function itself and not just move the mean trait values along a fixed trade-off line, as is generally assumed in optimality models. As a consequence, quantitative genetic theory predicts that the trade-off function will vary among populations in which at least one of the component traits itself varies. This prediction is tested using the trade-off between call duration and flight capability, as indexed by the mass of the dorsolateral flight muscles, in the macropterous morph of the sand cricket. We use four different populations of crickets that vary in the proportion of macropterous males (Lab = 33%, Florida = 29%, Bermuda = 72%, South Carolina = 80%). We find, as predicted, that there is significant variation in the intercept of the trade-off function but not the slope, supporting the hypothesis that trade-off functions are better represented as bivariate normal distributions rather than single lines. We also test the prediction from a quantitative genetical model of the evolution of wing dimorphism that the mean call duration of macropterous males will increase with the percentage of macropterous males in the population. This prediction is also supported. Finally, we estimate the probability of a macropterous male attracting a female, P, as a function of the relative time spent calling (P = time spent calling by macropterous male/(total time spent calling by both micropterous and macropterous male). We find that in the Lab and Florida populations the probability of a female selecting the macropterous male is equal to P, indicating that preference is due simply to relative call duration. But in the Bermuda and South Carolina populations the probability of a female selecting a macropterous male is less than P, indicating a preference for the micropterous male even after differences in call duration are accounted for. 相似文献
