Four trials were conducted to study synchronous estrous response in beef cows and in beef and dairy heifers to Luprostiol (13, thia-PG-F(2)alpha analog) in comparison with other prostaglandin products. In Trial 1, 60 virgin beef heifers were observed for estrus for 5 d and artificially inseminated. Heifers not observed in estrus within 5 d were randomly assigned to receive 15 mg Luprostiol or 25 mg Lutalyse. In Trial 2, 75 multiparous, lactating beef cows were randomly assigned to receive either 15 mg Luprostiol, 25 mg Lutalyse or 500 mcg Estrumate. All cows received a second injection of the respective treatment 11 d later. In Trial 3, 96 multiparous, lactating beef cows were randomly assigned to receive 15 mg Luprostiol or 25 mg Lutalyse. All cows received a second injection of the respective treatment 11 d later. In Trial 4, virgin dairy heifers were palpated per rectum. Seventy-seven heifers with a palpable corpus luteum (CL) were randomly assigned to receive 15 mg Luprostiol or 500 mcg Estrumate. In all trials animals were artificially inseminated 12 h following observed estrus. Estrous response during the 5-d synchronized period was 44% for Luprostiol and 42% for Lutalyse treated heifers in Trial 1. It was 52, 56 and 60%, respectively, for Luprostiol, Lutalyse and Estrumate treated cows in Trial 2; 23% for Luprostiol and 19% for Lutalyse treated cows in Trial 3; and 68% for Luprostiol and 70% for Estrumate treated heifers in Trial 4. Treatment with Luprostiol results in a similar synchronous estrous response as with the other prostaglandin products used in these studies.  相似文献

Ninety-five cows (79 Boran and 16 Boran-Brahman crossbreeds) and 107 heifers (55 Boran and 52 Boran x Friesian F1 crossbreeds) were used to determine estrus response, estrus response interval and pregnancy rate following synchronization with prostaglandin (PGF(2)alpha), a progesterone-releasing intravaginal device (PRID) and Synchro-mate B (SMB). The proportion of cattle responding to synchronization treatment was 62.5, 43.5 and 57.7% for cows and 85.7, 68.0 and 81.5% for heifers using PGF(2)alpha, PRID and SMB, respectively. The overall mean response was 59 and 81.8% for cows and heifers, respectively. The estrus response of the control animals over a 45-d breeding period was 72.7 and 90% for cows and heifers, respectively. The estrus response interval for cows was 31.8, 22.1 and 18.0 h and it was 51.1, 38.0 and 21.6 h for heifers with PGF(2)alpha, PRID and SMB treatment, respectively. Mean pregnancy rate for cows was 50.0, 34.8, 46.2 and 68.8% and for heifers it was 60.7, 40.0, 55.6 and 77.8% in the PGF(2)alpha, PRID, SMB and control groups, respectively. Based on these findings, it was concluded that both PGF(2)alpha and SMB produce a satisfactory estrus response and pregnancy rate in the cattle studied.  相似文献

Pregnancy rates of Nelore females inseminated with male-sexed semen and conventional semen from the same bulls were evaluated. The females included 433 heifers (2 years old) and 230 non-suckling cows, totaling 663 animals. Average body condition score was 3.5 (1-5 scale). Estrus was induced with prostaglandin F2α. The total pregnancy rate of females inseminated with male-sexed semen of bulls A, B and C was 38.8% (131/338) less (P<0.0001) than the total pregnancy rate observed for females inseminated with conventional semen from the same bulls (57.9% [188/325]). Pregnancy rates of non-suckling cows inseminated with male-sexed semen was 43.3% (49/113), which was similar (P≥0.05) to the values found for heifers inseminated with male-sexed semen from the same bulls (36.4% [82/225]). The pregnancy rate of females inseminated with male-sexed semen was less compared with females inseminated with conventional semen. In addition, there was no significant difference in the pregnancy rate of heifers versus non-suckling cows.  相似文献

During 3 consecutive calving seasons, calving performance, placental characteristics and endocrine profiles of total 98 pregnancies of late pregnant Swedish Red and White (SRB) and Swedish Holstein (SLB) dairy heifers and cows, were investigated. Ninety-four singleton pregnancies and 4 sets of twins were recorded. In animals with singleton pregnancy, 8 stillbirths, 7 weak calves, 3 premature parturitions and 1 abortion were registered. In the SLB heifers, 19% of stillbirth (5/26) were observed, while 5% (2/42) were noted for the SRB heifers. One stillborn calf derived from the SRB cows and none was found from the SLB cows. In the heifers and cows delivering a normal living calf with unassisted parturition, the placentome thickness monitored by ultrasonography was constant towards the end of pregnancy. The numbers of foetal cotyledons varied individually between animals but in total, fewer cotyledons were found in the foetal membranes of the SRB animals than in the SLB animals (69 ± 19) vs. (88 ± 29) (p < 0.05). No morphological and numerical differences of the placentome thickness in animals delivering a stillborn or weak calf, compared to animals delivering a normal living calf, could be observed. In animals with unassisted parturition and without birth complications, the levels of progesterone (P4), PGF metabolite (PG-metabolite), cortisol, oestrone sulphate (E1SO4) and pregnancy associated glycoproteins (PAGs) were not different by breeds and parities. In animals carrying stillbirth, higher levels of E1SO4 were found in 3 SRB animals and 1 SLB heifer, whereas lower levels of E1SO4 were recorded in 3 SLB heifers during the last week of pregnancy, compared to the profiles found in animals with unassisted parturition. Additionally, the levels of PAGs remained low and constant in 1 SRB cow (delivering a stillborn calf), 1 SRB heifer (giving birth prematurely), 4 animals (carrying twins) and 1 aborting SRB cow. Our results show a very high rate of stillbirth in especially SLB heifers and deviating profiles of E1SO4 and PAGs in animals with impaired parturition were recorded.  相似文献

The contraceptive efficacy of an intra-uterine device was evaluated using 218 heifers and 212 cows on three north Australian cattle stations. The heifers were aged approximately 2 years and weighed 250-378 kg; the cows were aged 3-16 years and weighed 256-540 kg. All cattle were non-pregnant, non-lactating Brahmans. At the end of the monsoon (wet) season (April-June 1997), the cattle were allocated by stratified randomisation to the three treatments which were untreated controls (n=59), surgical ovariectomy (n=105), or implantation with a bovine intra-uterine device (BIUD; n=266). All cattle grazed and were managed as one group within each station. They were exposed to bulls (4 per 100 females) from soon after treatment until slaughter approximately 12 months later. The BIUD could not be implanted in 25% of heifers and 8% of cows due to narrow or twisted cervices. Correct placement of the BIUDs appeared to be achieved in 57% of heifers and 72% of cows. At slaughter, the devices were incorrectly positioned in 73% of heifers and 49% of cows into which BIUDs had been inserted and that remained non-pregnant. Uterine perforations by the BIUD were observed in 35 and 45% of these heifers and cows, respectively; most perforations appeared to occur during implantation. Low-grade endometritis was observed at slaughter in most BIUD-implanted animals; 2% had pyometra.BIUD animals did not have significantly different growth to that of control or ovariectomised animals, other than when ovariectomy suppressed growth following surgery. Most animals implanted with BIUDs appeared to have normal ovarian function and animals were observed mating. All ovariectomised animals remained non-pregnant. Over 80% of controls were pregnant within 8 months of exposure to bulls, except heifers at one station where pregnancy rate was restricted to 25% as a result of severe nutritional conditions. Pregnancy was diagnosed in 21% of heifers and 33% of cows with implanted BIUDs. The device remained correctly positioned and with no pregnancy diagnosed in the year following implantation in only 2% of heifers and 14% of cows originally allocated.Because of the difficulties of implanting BIUDs, the high frequency of associated uterine injury, the high pregnancy rate in implanted animals, and that growth was unaffected by the presence of a BIUD, it was concluded that the device had poor contraception efficacy and no growth-promotant effect in Brahman cattle.  相似文献

Eighteen heifers and 120 cows which were descendants of a presumed 1/29 carrier Simmental bull were karotyped. Nine heifers (50%) and 48 cows (40%) were found to be heterozygous for the 1/29 translocation (59, XX, t(1q;29q)). The other animals were chromosomally normal (i.e., 60, XX) or not karotyped. The 48 1/29 cows were compared with 72 chromosomally normal cows with regards to days to first conception, calving interval, percentage of calves conceived, percentage of calves weaned and production efficiency (% calved conceived × % calved weaned). Nine carrier heifers were compared to the nine noncarrier heifers as to pregnancy status. Carrier, noncarrier and nonkarotyped relatives were compared to each other and to contemporary females with regard to pregnancy status at their initial exposure to males. The percentage of calves conceived (calving efficiency) in the 72 noncarrier and the 48 females heterozygous for the 1/29 translocation were 81.5 and 74.8%, respectively (P<0.07). Although days to first conception was longer and percentage of calves weaned and production efficiency were lower in the female heterozygous for the 1/29 translocation, the differences were not statistically different (P>0.10) from the noncarriers. Pregnancy rate was 44.4 and 66.7% (P>0.10) for nine carrier and nine noncarrier heifers, respectively. The pregnancy rate of carrier (65.4%), noncarrier (73.2%) and nonkarotyped (77.8%) relatives of this sire at their mating as yearlings, did not differ (P>0.10). The pregnancy rate as yearlings of carrier females (65.4%) and contemporary heifers (79.8%) did differ (P<0.05). Comparing the pregnancy rate as yearlings of all descendants (72.0%) of the Simmental sire to contemporary heifers (79.8%), a significant decrease (P<0.05) was found indicating that fertility of this sire may have been lower than other sires or that other factors beside the translocation affected fertility.  相似文献

Zebu cattle are notorious for poor fertility characterized by late maturity and long intercalving intervals attributed to a variety of factors, including genetic, nutritional and climatic. The aim of the present investigation, therefore, was to induce fertile estrus in acyclic pubertal heifers and postpartum anestrous Zebu cows by hormonal intervention. Pubertal Hariana and Sahiwal anestrous heifers (n=51) and postpartum cows (n=55) were either assigned a placebo (controls, N=6 for each breed and parity) or treated with 10-d norgestomet (3 mg) subcutaneous ear implants, with an initial injection of 3 mg, im norgestomet + 5 mg estradiol valerate, followed by 500 IU eCG at implant withdrawal (NOR-treated groups). Jugular venous plasma samples were obtained from a total of 28 animals (controls : 4 heifers and 4 cows; NOR-treated : 12 heifers and 8 cows) on Days 0 (implant insertion), 3, 7, 9 and Day 10 (implant withdrawal), every 12 h on Days 11 and 12, and then once daily on Days 17, 24 and 31. All the samples were assayed for progesterone. Almost all (97%) heifers and 81% cows were induced to estrus, the majority (92% heifers and 79% cows) within 120 h of implant removal. Synchrony of the induced estrus was better in cows, but interval to estrus and estrus duration were significantly longer in heifers (P<0.05). Post-treatment fertility, based on Day 28 nonretum rate, first service, and overall conception rates, was better in heifers (78.9, 60.5 and 73.7%, respectively) than cows (77.1, 48.6 and 62.9%, respectively), but the differences were significant only for the overall pregnancy rate (71.8% for heifers and 51.2% for cows; P<0.05). Low pre-treatment plasma progesterone values (<0.5ng/mL) were consistent with ovarian inactivity, confirming the true anestrus status of experimental animals. Controls failed to exhibit estrus and maintained low progesterone concentrations throughout the study. In treated animals, high progesterone values from Day 17 onwards suggested ovulatory estrus. These early luteal phase progesterone concentrations in nonpregnant (P=0.06) and nonpregnant, nonretum (P<0.05) animals were low in comparison with those of pregnant animals. Good fertility resulting from breeding according to estrus, inspite of variable intervals to estrus and estrus duration, advocates its advantage over fixed-time insemination in norgestomet-treated anestrous Zebu cattle.  相似文献

Parturitions were induced in 66 dairy cows and heifers of the German Black Pied breed, 11 to 13 days before term, using either a highly potent corticosteroid (flumethasone: 2 × 5 mg, 10 to 14 hr apart), or prostaglandin F (20 mg i.v.) and initiating treatments either in the morning (A.M.) or late afternoon (P.M.). At those dose levels parturition was induced in 5050 animals treated with flumethasone, and in 99 heifers, but only in 57 cows treated with PGF; placentas were retained in all cases in which parturition was induced. Intervals between initiation of treatments and parturition were shorter in flumethasone-treated animals (flumethasone: 42.5 hr; PGF 57.2 hr); with both drugs, they were approximately 10 to 15 hr shorter in younger animals. The first flumethasone treatment at P.M. prolonged the intervals to parturition in cows (first treatment A.M.: 37.8 hr; P.M.: 52.9 hr), but not in normal age heifers (A.M.: 27.6 hr; P.M.: 25.9 hr); in early bred heifers, this trend was reversed (A.M. 41.6 hr; P.M.: 31.8 hr). No circadian differences in response to PGF were noted. Mean intervals to postpartum conceptions were 93 and 94 days for PGF-treated cows and heifers, and 123.5 and 125 days for flumethasone-treated cows and heifers, respectively.  相似文献

This paper addresses the question whether the pregnancy rate of dairy cows and heifers may be affected by administering prostaglandin F at the time of artificial insemination. A field trial involving 1031 dairy cows and heifers distributed to a large number of small dairy farms in an area of extensive farming in central Germany provided evidence that intramuscular administration of 25 mg Dinoprost (Dinolytic®) at the time of insemination has no effect on pregnancy rate (61% of the cows and heifers were pregnant in both prostaglandin F-treated and saline control groups). On the other hand, deposition of 0.5 mL of a 0.5 mg/mL Dinoprost solution in the uterine lumen immediately after artificial insemination gave rise to a pregnancy rate of 66% as compared with 59% in saline controls. The increase in pregnancy rate of 229 prostaglandin F-treated animals (66% pregnant) over that of 226 saline controls (59% pregnant) amounted to 12%. This improvement was not statistically significant (P = 0.12). Factors exerting a significant effect on pregnancy rate were parity (74% pregnancies in heifers versus 57% in cows, P < 0.01 and 65% pregnancies in first parity-cows versus 55% in older cows, P < 0.01) and season (57% during the barn season versus 64% during the pasture season, P < 0.05), whereas length of service period, level of milk production and serum or milk progesterone level at the time of insemination did not. A follow-up trial involving more animals will have to be conducted aimed at confirming the promising results obtained by intrauterine PGF administration.  相似文献

This study was designed to test the hypothesis that treatment with super-ovulatory drugs suppresses endogenous pulsatile LH secretion. Heifers (n=5/group) were superovulated with eCG (2500 IU) or FSH (equivalent to 400 mg NIH-FSH-P1), starting on Day 10 of the estrous cycle, and were injected with prostaglandin F(2alpha) on Day 12 to induce luteolysis. Control cows were injected only with prostaglandin. Frequent blood samples were taken during luteolysis (6 to 14 h after PG administration) for assay of plasma LH, estradiol, progesterone, testosterone and androstenedione. The LH pulse frequency in eCG-treated cows was significantly lower than that in control cows (2.4 +/- 0.4 & 6.4 +/- 0.4 pulses/8 h, respectively; P<0.05), and plasma progesterone (3.4 +/- 0.4 vs 1.8 +/- 0.1 ng/ml, for treated and control heifers, respectively; P<0.05) and estradiol concentrations (25.9 +/- 4.3 & 4.3 +/- 0.4 pg/ml, for treated and control heifers, respectively; P<0.05) were higher compared with those of the controls. No LH pulses were detected in FSH-treated cows, and mean LH concentrations were significantly lower than those in the controls (0.3 +/- 0.1 & 0.8 +/- 0.1, respectively; P<0.05). This suppression of LH was associated with an increase in estradiol (9.5 +/- 1.4 pg/ml; P<0.05 compared with controls) but not in progesterone concentrations (2.1 +/- 0.2 ng/ml; P>0.05 compared to controls). Both superovulatory protocols increased the ovulation rate (21.6 +/- 3.9 and 23.0 +/- 4.2, for eCG and FSH groups, respectively; P>0.05). These data demonstrate that super-ovulatory treatments decrease LH pulse frequency during the follicular phase of the treatment cycle. This could be explained by increased steroid secretion in the eCG-trated heifers but not in FSH-treated animals.  相似文献

The present study was performed to test fertility after low dose insemination with sexed and non-sexed sperm in dairy cattle under field conditions in Switzerland. Spermatozoa were stained with Hoechst 33342 and sorted by flow cytometry. A total of 132 heifers and cows were inseminated with 2 x 10(6) X-bearing, frozen-thawed sperm (A) and 91 animals were inseminated with the same dose using non-sorted, frozen-thawed sperm (B). Pregnancy examination by ultrasound was performed twice, 30-40 days (PE1) and 70-90 days (PE2) after insemination. The pregnancy rates after PE1 were 33.3% (9/27) and 59.3% (16/27) in heifers (P=0.05) and 27.6% (29/105) and 28.1% (18/64) in cows (P>0.05) for groups A and B, respectively. Embryonic losses between PE1 and PE2 in heifers were 11.1% (1/9) and 0% (0/16) and in cows 17.2% (5/29) and 5.6% (1/18), the differences between groups A and B not being significant (P>0.05). Calving rates in heifers were 29.6% (8/27) and 57.8% (15/26), whereas in cows 22.1% (23/104) and 23.4% (16/63) gave birth to calves (for both groups P>0.05). The sex ratio was different (P<0.05) between A (85.3%) and B (58.6%). From our results it can be concluded that conception rates of sorted and non-sorted semen are similar using an insemination dose of 2 x 10(6). Fertility may be increased by improving sexing technology and animal management.  相似文献

This study evaluated fertility in swamp buffalo after synchronization of ovulation combined with fixed time artificial insemination. At the start of the study, designated day 0, from a group of 98 female Thai swamp buffalo, 55 buffalo (heifers n° = 20 and cows n° = 35) were selected to be synchronized with GnRH (Day 0) followed by PGF2alpha (Day 7) and a second treatment with GnRH (Day 9). All buffalo were inseminated at two fixed times 12 h and 24 h after the second injection of GnRH (Ovsynch+TAI group); a second group of 43 buffalo (heifers n° = 19 and cows n° = 24) were not treated and were artificially inseminated (AI) at natural estrus (AI group). Blood samples were taken 22 days after insemination to evaluate progesterone plasma levels. In the Ovsynch+TAI group, overall conception rate (CR; i.e. the number of cows with progesterone >4.0 ng/ml on day 22 after AI divided by the number of animals inseminated), was 38.1% and overall pregnancy rate (PR; i.e. the number of cows that were pregnant at day 50-60 after insemination divided by the number of animals inseminated), was 32.7%. In the AI group overall CR and PR was 34.9%.Within the Ovsynch+TAI group, CR and PR were reduced (P < 0.05) in heifers compared with cows (CR 15.0% vs. 51.4% for heifers and cows, respectively; PR 15.0% vs. 42.9% for heifers and cows, respectively). Within the AI group the efficacy of treatment was similar between heifers and cows (CR and PR 31.6% for heifers and 37.5% for cows). In conclusion, this study indicates that in swamp buffalo it is possible to synchronize ovulation and use timed artificial insemination with the Ovsynch+TAI protocol.  相似文献

The use of CIDR-B or PRID in combination with prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2alpha) for synchronizing estrus in embryo transfer recipients was evaluated in 2 experiments. In Experiment 1, virgin heifers (n=263) were synchronized using either a PRID (including estradiol benzoate capsule) or a CIDR-B in a combined program in which devices were inserted on Day 1, an injection of prostaglandin was given on Day 6, and devices were withdrawn on Day 7. The interval from device removal to the onset of estrus was significantly shorter for CIDR-B than for PRID-treated animals (50.44 vs 55.50 hours; P<0.003). The CIDR-B treatment resulted in a similar degree of synchrony to the PRID treatment (74.0 vs 70.4%; P=0.68). InExperiment 2, cows (n=95) and heifers (n=93) were allocated at random to be synchronized using a PRID (excluding estradiol benzoate capsule) plus PGF2alpha or a CIDR-B device plus PGF2alpha. The devices were inserted on Day 1, an injection of prostaglandin was given on Day 10 and the devices were removed on Day 12. Estrus was observed earlier following the CIDR-B treatment (43.50 vs 47.04 hours; P=0.01), but the degree of synchrony was similar (76.2 vs 76.3%; P>0.10) for the CIDR-B and PRID-treated animals. In both experiments, there were no significant differences in the proportions of animals observed in estrus, selected as embryo transfer recipients, or which achieved pregnancy consequent on embryo transfer between those synchronized using CIDR-B or PRID regimens. We conclude that the CIDR-B is a suitable device for synchronizing estrus in embryo transfer recipients.  相似文献

In 25, 3-to-13 year old, dairy cows (Braunvieh and Hoehenfleckyieh) FSH, LH and progesterone plasma profiles were determined by RIA. Blood was sampled at 6-hour intervals from parturition to 40–78 days postpartum, and the results correlated with the commencement of cyclic functions. For FSH, generally basic values were recorded, without characteristic features associating any values with the onset of cyclic ovarian activities or the occurrence of the first heat. LH profiles varied greatly between individuals with regard to the onset of elevations, regularity of patterns and peak values. The first preovulatory LH peak was recorded 17.3±9.8 days (range 4–46) postpartum. The first heat occurred on day 28.4±16 (range 6–55) postpartum, indicating that 13/23 cows ovulated without behavioral estrus, as reproductive cycles were re-established. Peak LH values increased with progressive cycles (1st peak 5.7±4.8 ng/ml; 2nd peak 11.8±8.7 ng/ml; 3rd peak 13.5±9.9 ng/ml plasma). Progesterone values also showed great variations in the profile of their first postpartum elevation. In 13/25 cows the first cycle was shortened (13.1±2.9 days), prolonged in 3 animals (34±4 days) and normal in 7 cows (20.4±1.9 days). Heat, preovulatory LH peak and progesterone profile were normal in all animals on subsequent cycles. Two animals did not start cycling.  相似文献

The effects of fenprostalene, cloprostenol sodium and prostaglandin F(2) alpha (PGF(2alpha)) on estrus, conception rate, pregnancy rate, and the interval from Day 1 of the breeding season to calving were studied on 135 purebred Angus cows and heifers. The cows and heifers were randomly allotted within age to the three estrus synchronization treatments and a control group. The calving percentages (for cows and heifers combined) that resulted from artificial insemination (AI) were 32.3, 31.4, 43.6, and 51.1% for the control, fenprostalene, cloprostenol sodium, and PGF(2alpha) groups, respectively. The calving percentage during the AI period by ages of dam at breeding were 54.2% for yearling heifers, 30.5% for two-year-olds, 47.6% for three-year-olds, and 26.1% for four-year-old or older cows. The percentage of cows and heifers detected in estrus and the percentage that conceived after the first injection for control, fenprostalene, cloprostenol sodium, and PGF(2alpha) groups were 51.6 and 22.3%, 59.3 and 32.1%, 76.8 and 44.1%, and 66.6 and 50.2%, respectively. The intervals from Day 1 of the breeding season to calving and from Day 1 of the calving season within each treatment to the birth of each calf were control, 285.9 and 23.8 d; fenprostalene, 283.6 and 13.4 d; cloprostenol sodium, 285.5 and 6.5 d; and PGF(2alpha), 284.0 and 11.1 d.  相似文献

In three experiments, we examined endogenous opioid inhibition of luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion during the bovine estrous cycle. An increase in serum LH in response to the opioid antagonist naloxone (Na; 1 mg/kg i.v.) was the criterion for opioid inhibition. Estrous cycles were synchronized via prostaglandin administration. In Experiment 1, mean serum LH was not different during the luteal phase in yearling heifers (n = 6/group) at Hour 1 after Nal (2.1 ng/ml) compared to controls (1.8 ng/ml). However, LH peak amplitude was increased (p less than 0.05) in the Nal compared to the control group. Serum LH was increased (p less than 0.01) during the follicular phase in heifers at Hour 1 post-Nal compared to controls (4.7 and 3.5 ng/ml, respectively). Again, Nal administration was followed by increased (p less than 0.05) LH pulse amplitude compared to control. In Experiment 2, no effect of Nal upon serum LH was detected in cows (n = 9) during proestrus, metestrus, midluteal and late luteal portions of the estrous cycle. In Experiment 3, the LH response to Nal was examined simultaneously in yearling heifers and cows (n = 5/group) during the luteal and follicular phases. Serum LH increased (p less than 0.001) during Hour 1 post-Nal in heifers compared to cows during the follicular (3.4 vs. 1.7 ng/ml) but not during the luteal phase. LH pulse amplitude also increased (p less than 0.05) during Hour 1 post-Nal in heifers compared to cows during the luteal (2.5 vs. 1.1 ng/nl and follicular (2.5 vs. 1.3 ng/ml) phases.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The most common beef cattle raised in Brazil is the Nelore breed (Bos indicus). Information obtained by ultrasonography on follicular growth in Bos taurus cattle has been accumulating rapidly. However, there are few publications to date on follicular development in Bos indicus breeds. The follicular dynamics in Nelore heifers and cows during natural or prostaglandin (PG)-induced estrous cycle were studied. From the detection of estrus onward, all animals were examined daily by ultrasonography for one (n = 35) or two (n = 10) consecutive estrous cycles. The follicular dynamic in Nelore cattle was characterized by the predominance of 2 follicular waves in the cows (83.3%, n = 18, P < 0.05) and 3 waves in the heifers (64.7%, n = 16, P < 0.05). Most of the cattle observed over 2 consecutive estrous cycles presented the same pattern of follicular waves in the first and second cycle, and only 30% showed variation in the number of waves from one cycle to the other. Most of the follicular parameters analyzed were not affected by PG treatment or age but were altered by follicular waves. Consequently, data on cows and heifers were combined according to the number of follicular waves. The ovulatory follicle was larger than the other dominant follicles (P < 0.05), and the ovulatory wave was shorter than the preceding waves (P < 0.05). The interovulatory interval was longer in animals showing 3 waves than those exhibiting 2 waves (P < 0.05). Maximum diameter of the dominant follicle (around 11 mm) and of the corpus luteum (CL, approximately 17 mm) were smaller than those reported for European breeds. In conclusion, the results demonstrate that although the dominant follicle and corpus luteum are smaller than in European breeds, the follicular dynamics in Nelore cattle were similar to those observed in European breeds and were characterized by 2 or 3 follicular waves for cows and heifers, respectively, during the natural or prostaglandin-induced estrous cycle.  相似文献

The aim of the experiment was to study the oestrous behaviour and the peripheral blood plasma profiles of luteinizing hormone (LH), progesterone and the prostaglandin metabolite, 15-keto-13,14-dihydro-PGF2, during oestrus and metoestrus in repeat breeder (RBH) and virgin heifers (VH). Ten animals of each category were utilized. The RBH had a history of at least three inseminations without conception, and the VH were sexually mature animals not previously inseminated or mated. Oestrous symptoms were recorded and blood collected from the onset of prooestrus to 7 days after oestrus. The animals were inseminated during oestrus and their embryos were collected by a nonsurgical technique 7 days after insemination. The morphology of the embryos was evaluated.

The duration of oestrus was longer (P < 0.05) in the RBH (31.5 ± 3.6 h) than in the VH (23.8 ± 2.0 h). No differences in duration of prooestrus or in the interval from the end of oestrus to postoestrous bleeding were found between the heifer categories. The interval from the onset of oestrus to the preovulatory LH peak was longer (P < 0.05) in the RBH (12.2 ± 2.8 h) than in the VH (4.8 ± 1.5 h). There was a lower LH release in the RBH than in the VH, measured as the magnitude of the preovulatory LH peak (P < 0.05; 28.0 ± 4.0 vs. 40.7 ± 3.6 μg/l) or as the area under the curve of the LH peak (P < 0.01; 1141 ± 164 vs. 1765 ± 144 mm2). The progesterone levels were higher (P < 0.05) in the RBH than in the VH during the interval 5–48 h and lower (P < 0.05) during the interval 121–168 h after the LH peak. Peaks of the prostaglandin metabolite were seen during oestrus in both heifer groups. There were more prostaglandin metabolite peaks in the RBH than in the VH during the interval 13–24 h after the LH peak. Fewer normal embryos (P < 0.05) and more degenerated embryos (P < 0.01) were found in the RBH than in the VH group 7 days after insemination. No apparent relation was found between the morphology of the embryos and the hormonal changes.

The result of the study indicates a hormonal imbalance in the RBH. The hormonal asynchronism starts before or early in oestrus, which presumably leads to a sequence of improper hormonal changes responsible for the elevated embryonic loss in repeat breeder animals.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to examine typical behavioural elements in suckling cows and heifers at the first stage of labour and how these are affected by parity and dystocia. For this purpose, the parturitions of 87 cattle (10 Simmental heifers; 77 multiparous cows, 55 Simmental, 21 Simmental × Limousin) were observed from the appearance of the amniotic sacs in the cervix up to the emergence of the foetal phalanges in the rima vulvae. The animals were divided into three groups: group 1—cows with eutocia, n = 68; group 2—heifers with eutocia, n = 10; group 3—cows with dystocia, n = 9.

Compared to cows, there was a lower proportion of heifers with calm behaviour, whereas a higher proportion of heifers showed pawing with the forefeet (P < 0.05).

There was a higher proportion of cows with dystocia which showed rubbing against the wall (P < 0.05), discharge of urine (P < 0.05) and scraping on the floor (P < 0.05) compared to cows with eutocia.

The differences in behaviour of cows and heifers should be considered in a system for monitoring parturition to avoid misconstruing the normal calving situation and to obviate unnecessary obstetric intervention in heifers. Behavioural elements which were more frequently detectable in cases of dystocia should draw attention to the possibility that there may be a problem in the first stage of labour.  相似文献

A technique of visual assessment of cattle for reproductive efficiency, described by Professor Jan Bonsma of South Africa, was evaluated in two well-managed large herds of 1/2 to 3/4 Brahman cross heifers and cows located in the dry tropics of north Australia. Individual lifetime performance records were available for all animals. Experienced cattlemen carried out the assessments. Higher scores were previously claimed to indicate higher fertility. The technique had high repeatability (0.7) and was quickly learned by the assessors. Scores from visual assessment had no useful predictive value for either heifer or cow fertility or for growth rate up to 27 mo of age, although 2.5-yr-old heifers which were scored as subfertile matured into 4% smaller cows than heifers which had scored higher. Scores decreased as fatness increased (P < 0.05). Some biases in visual assessment occurred. Lactating cows scored higher than nonlactating cows (P < 0.05), independently of their reproductive record. Red and grey cows scored higher than brindle and black/brown cows (P < 0.05). Bonsma scores were not influenced by the percentage of Brahman in the genotype. Significant, but apparently random, age effects on scores also occurred. It was concluded that the visual assessment criteria described by Bonsma were of no practical value in assessing potential productivity of breeding animals in well-managed Brahman cross cattle in the dry tropics.  相似文献
