Synopsis Life history variation within the family Embiotocidae is extensive and involves differences in age of first reproduction, fecundity schedules, growth rates, longevity and size of young. Based on maximum reported body lengths, there are three distinct size groups among the family's 23 species. Small species do not exceed 215 mm TL, medium-size species attain 275 to 335 mm TL, and the large species attain 380 to 470 mm TL. The longevity oh surfperches varies from two to ten years, growth is indeterminate, and females of the medium-and large-size groups may delay first reproduction beyond age one. With one exception, all species show increasing length-specific fecundities. The life history characteristics of females differ among the three size groups. Relative to smaller species, the largest species have moderately high fecundity, delayed maturity and long life. Medium-size species have low fecundity, may delay maturity for 1 to 3 years and have intermediate life spans. Small species have generally higher, but variable, fecundity, do not delay maturity, and are short lived. Among the small North American species, the trend in fecundity varies inversely with environmental predictability. Fecundity is highest in the species which occupies highly seasonal freshwater environments. Coastal species produce moderately large broods and species which occupy stable deep water environments produce the smallest broods.  相似文献

Environmental fluctuations can in theory allow the coexistence ofecologically similar species by time-sharing a niche, as envisioned by Hutchinson. The evolution of this situation is studied in a competition model, using as an example the evolution of seed germination strategies. Coexistence occurs via the evolution of low-risk and high-risk strategies for dealing with the variability by different species. Coexistence is promoted by intermediate levels of variability or disturbance, and by a trade-off between seed yield and seed survivorship. These results may be applicable also to other low vs. high risk life history options in unpredictably varying environments, such as: stress resistance vs. potentially rapid growth, high adult survivorship vs. high reproductive output. The model's predictions differ from those obtained without consideration of life history evolution in response to environmental variability, and are consistent with some recent studies of plant strategies in intermittently stressed communities.I thank A. Armadillidium vulgare differed in growth and survivorship on two field sites. Growth rates were higher at a site with consistently higher quality food than at the other site where less high-quality food was produced and which was less predictably accessible. Survivorship was higher at the second site where temperature fluctuations were consistently smaller. Individuals from the two populations were kept for 6 months under the same food and temperature conditions and patterns of resource allocation to reproductive traits analysed. Members of the population from the site with good growth conditions had significantly higher reproductive allocation, by 13.5%, and larger broods, by 9.1%, than those from the site with poor growth conditions. Contrary to theoretical predictions, they also had significantly larger offspring, by 7.5% dry mass. Larger offspring survived better than small ones. This differential survivorship, by 20% for a 3.4% difference in live mass, was much more pronounced under conditions of moisture stress and under fluctuating temperature regimes. Larger offspring would therefore be at a selective advantage on the site with more severe temperature fluctuations. Phenotypic plasticity in reproductive traits in response to experimental changes in food quality, temperature and crowding were monitored. Reproductive allocation was increased by 20.8% under conditions of higher food quality, by 14.7% at higher temperatures, and by 12.5% under less crowded conditions. Brood size, but not offspring dry mass, increased when food quality increased. When crowding increased by 25.0%, the size of broods remained the same but the dry mass of individual offspring decreased by 11.2%. Members of the population from the site with more variable access to high-quality food showed more plasticity in reproductive traits in response to changes in food supply than members of the population from the site with the more predictable food supply. Members of the population from the site with more stable temperatures showed less plasticity to temperature changes than members of the population from the site with greater temperature fluctuations. It is concluded that the observed microevolutionary processes and phenotypic plasticity have adaptative value as responses to spatial and temporal heterogeneity in environmental conditions.  相似文献

Summary We examined the effect of reproduction on growth in 33 genotypes of Plantago major and 14 genotypes of P. rugelii. These two herbaceous perennials have contrasting life histories; P. major reproduces at a smaller size, and allocates a larger proportion of its biomass to reproduction, than P. rugelii. The effect of reproduction on frowth was determined experimentally using photoperiod manipulations to control level of reproduction. The difference in growth between reproductive treatments was divided by the difference in capsule weight to produce a measure of reproductive cost per g of capsule for genotypes of the two species. In both species there was substantial variation among genotypes in the effect of reproduction on growth. Much of this variation could be correlated with differences among genotypes in the extent of reproductive investment and plant size. Cost in terms of reduction in growth per g of capsule increased with reproductive investment in P. rugelii, and with plant size in P. major. We suggest the differences between species in timing and extent of reproduction are related to the differences between species in effect of reproduction on growth. Plantago rugelii may reproduce to a lesser extent than P. major because cost per g of capsule in terms of reduced vegetative biomass, increases with reproductive output in the former species, but not in the latter. Similarly, P. major may reproduce earlier than P. rugelii because cost per g of capsule increases with plant size in P. major, but not in P. rugelii.  相似文献

Synopsis Female Gambusia affinis were collected from low salinity/near-neutral pH and tidal freshwater/low pH localities to document life history variation between these two habitats. Mosquito fish were 2.7 times more abundant in low salinity/near-neutral pH (2.37 ± 0.72 ppt; pH = 5.73 ± 0.11) than in tidal freshwater/low pH (0.27 ± 0.19 ppt; pH = 4.46 ± 0.18) habitats in Old Fort Bayou, a black-water tidal river of the Biloxi Bay estuary, Mississippi. Fish were common in both areas from June 1985 through February 1986. There were no significant differences between habitats in the length-weight relationships during the reproductive season with the exception of February. However, there were significant differences in life histories, although the areas were only 4 km apart. Ovarian recrudescence was observed in fish from both areas in February, but ovaries of low salinity fish were more developed than ovaries of freshwater fish. All fish from both areas had regressed ovaries by late September. The monthly slopes of the brood size vs. standard length regressions were significantly different between areas throughout the reproductive season with the exception of June. Although freshwater fish produced heavier tail-free embryos, fish from low salinity had significantly higher GSI values and brood size throughout the reproductive season. These observations suggest that Gambusia affonis may have a greater reproductive effort in low salinity/near-neutral pH environments than in freshwater/low pH habitats.  相似文献

Summary Brood sizes of the Willow Tit were altered experimentally by subtracting or adding two nestlings in 1986 and 1987 in the vicinity of Oulu, northern Finland. The manipulated broods were within the normal range observed in natural conditions. Unaltered broods were used as controls. Data from natural broods from 1978–1985 were available for comparison. When the nestlings were 13 days old they were ringed and weighed and their tarsus, wing, and tail lengths were measured. On the same day the parents were caught, weighed, and measured. In 1986 there were no differences in nestling mortality between the reduced, control, or enlarged broods; i.e. parents were able to fledge the two extra young. In 1987 starvation was most pronounced in the enlarged broods. This resulted in the number of fledglings being practically the same in each manipulation category. Especially the body weight, but also the other indices of body size, decreased as a function of the brood size category, suggesting that there may be quality differences between the young reared in different experimental groups. In 1986 there was a non-significant trend towards lower body weight of the parents attending reduced, control, or enlarged broods, in that order. In 1987 the differences were much smaller. These results were not due to size differences between the groups, so possibly the increased reproductive effort of raising extra young was responsible for the trend observed in 1986. There were no significant differences in parental survival associated with the manipulation category, although the trend in the females was consistent with the hypothesis of reproductive cost. It is possible that environmental conditions in 1986 were so favourable that the tits were not unduly stressed even when attending two extra young. Correlative data from 1978–1985 did not support the cost hypothesis either. A non-significant trend towards reduced post-fledging survival and recruitment of the young was observed with increased brood size. The average fitness value of parents, incorporating parental survival and number of recruits, showed that the success of the adults raising enlarged broods may be lower than that of others. It seems that the reproductive cost, if it exists, decreases individual fitness value by reducing the chances of recruiting descendants into the next generation. The reproductive stress may be insufficient to reduce the subsequent survival of parents. More data are however needed to confirm these results.  相似文献

(1) We studied the variation in characters of two Andean populations of Rhinella spinulosa with different larval thermal regimes as a function of geographic origin and temperature.
(2) In both populations, survival and growth rate were greater at the higher temperature. Size at metamorphosis was only determined by locality, while there was a divergence in growth rate and age at metamorphosis as a function of locality and temperature.
(3) Variation was found in seven of the 12 morphological characters evaluated in post-metamorphic toadlets, which was determined only by their locality of origin.

The reproductive response involving egg number and size was studied for the egg carrying copepod Euterpina acutifrons in two estuaries with different nutritional environment (Bilbao and Mundaka). To characterise the available food for copepods, the concentration of particulate organic matter (POM), the combined concentration (PGL) and proportion of particulate protein, carbohydrate and lipids and the concentration of chlorophyll a were measured in the <20 μm seston fraction. Data on female size (prosome length) and abiotic factors, such as temperature, salinity and oxygen saturation in water, were also obtained to relate them to reproductive and nutritional variables. Correlation and stepwise regression analyses indicated that temperature via female size was the main factor controlling brood volume in a temporal context, whilst the nutritional environment had a secondary role. Nevertheless, the nutritional environment caused noticeable between-estuary differences in the reproductive response of this species. ANOVA tests showed that E. acutifrons clutch size and brood volume were significantly bigger in the estuary of Bilbao, which was richer in both total (POM) and labile (PGL) organic particulate matter than the estuary of Mundaka. In contrast, egg size, female size and phytoplanktonic food quantity did not differ significantly between estuaries. These results suggest that the organic enrichment with particles of detritical-heterotrophic origin enhanced E. acutifrons clutch size and brood volume in Bilbao. Egg size was closely related to phytoplankton in both estuaries, but a clear trade-off between egg size and number per clutch was observed only in Mundaka. Thus, we suggest that the reduction of egg number in order to increase egg size might happen only under food-limiting conditions, but not in organically rich and quite constant nutritional environments such as found those in Bilbao.  相似文献

Synopsis The pike killifish, Belonesox belizanus, is native to Mexico and Central America and was introduced into Dade County, Florida in 1957. This study reports on the structure and reproduction of the Florida population and compares the species with other members of the family Poeciliidae. The mean standard length (SL) of mature females was about 103 mm. Most females larger than 75 mm SL contained yolked ova, fertilized eggs, or embryos. Mature males averaged about 72 mm SL, and most males larger than 55 mm SL were mature. The sex ratio was significantly skewed in favor of females among adults, but it did not differ significantly from 1:1 among immature fish. Average brood size was about 99, and there was a significant positive correlation of brood size with size of the parent female. There was no evidence of superfetation. Sizes and weights of embryos and neonates were the largest reported for the family. There was a significant decrease in mean embryo weight as development proceeded, indicating that developing embryos received little or no nutrient input from the maternal system after fertilization. The average interbrood interval of aquarium-held females was 42 days, and females stored viable sperm at least 47 days. Reproduction continued year round in the field. Laboratory-born neonates were immediately piscivorous and exhibited distinctive behavior associated with filling the swimbladder and with avoiding detection by predators.  相似文献

Long-lived understory herbs experience a highly dynamic forest over space and time, yet can persist for more than a century. To understand how these populations persist, we examined effects of forest age and disturbance on potential sexual reproduction and clonal growth in the sexually labile perennial, Arisaema triphyllum. Potential sexual reproduction (female:male ratio) was significantly greater in the Young and Old-Gap forest states compared with Old, closed-canopy sites, where it was virtually absent. In contrast, clonal growth (estimated by cormlet production) did not differ significantly among the three forest states. Of seven environmental variables measured, only light (positively) and plant density (negatively) contributed significantly to the variation in potential sexual reproduction, while no measured variables contributed significantly to the variation in number of cormlets. The larger sexual reproductive effort (flower+stalk biomass/total biomass) for males in the undisturbed, 100 yr old forest may explain the absence of females in these sites, while the invariant vegetative reproductive effort (cormlet biomass/total biomass) may explain the similarity in average number of cormlets per individual per season across forest states. These results suggest that potential sexual reproduction is resource-limited, while clonal growth may be resource-independent. By maintaining ramet production during unfavorable periods, A. triphyllum populations disperse temporally, waiting for conditions under which sexual reproduction may resume.  相似文献

Studies of intraspecific morphological variation in fishes have traditionally focused on freshwater rather than marine species. In addition, such studies typically focus on adults, although causes and intensities of selective pressures most likely vary through an individual's lifetime. In this study, body and head shape of a marine species, shiner perch Cymatogaster aggregata Gibbons were compared among localities along the Pacific Northwest coast of North America. Evidence was found for intraspecific variation in ontogenetic allometry, and for a closer correlation of body shape with environment rather than geographical proximity. This correlation with environment was more evident in younger fish, thereby demonstrating the importance of analysing multiple life stages. A common garden experiment suggests both environmental and genetic bases for the observed differences. Recognizing intraspecific ecomorphological complexity and its specificity to habitat and/or life stage can have important consequences for understanding the role of local adaptation and population dynamics in macroecology.  相似文献

Synopsis The painted greenling, Oxylebius pictus, a hexagrammid fish of shallow, northeastern Pacific rocky habitats was observed and collected near the center of its range at Monterey Bay, California, and near the northern limit of its distribution at Puget Sound. Life history characteristics were compared for breeding stocks from the two areas. Mean and maximum adult body sizes (lengths and wet weights) and longevities of both sexes are greater at Puget Sound. Also, both males and females reach sexual maturity at a smaller body length at Monterey. Age group 0 and I juveniles are twice as abundant as adults at Monterey but rare at Puget Sound. Monterey females have greater relative fecundities. Egg development rates are similar at equivalent temperatures; eggs are smaller, however, at Monterey, and thus embryos are smaller at hatching. Length increase is faster for Puget Sound juveniles; adult fish in the two areas grow in length at comparable rates, although weight per body length is consistently greater for Monterey fish. These findings reflect a poorer survivorship at Monterey, where natural predation on fertilized eggs and the mortality rates of adult males are greater.  相似文献

1. The evolution of eusociality in Australian gall‐inducing thrips cannot be understood without comparisons among closely related solitary species. The life history of two solitary, gall‐inducing thrips, Kladothrips ellobus and Oncothrips rodwayi, was investigated, and data for solitary and eusocial species from previous studies were re‐analysed. Kladothrips ellobus is in a clade that is closely related to the eusocial species. Oncothrips rodwayi is in the same clade as the eusocial species and appears to have undergone an evolutionary loss of eusociality. It is the only galling thrips on Acacia in temperate environments. 2. The brood size of K. ellobus is eight to 23 times larger than broods of foundresses in eusocial species whereas the brood size of O. rodwayi is not significantly different from those of foundresses in eusocial species. 3. In K. ellobus, the mean sex ratio was not significantly different from parity but in O. rodwayi the mean sex ratio was 0.13 male. In O. rodwayi, 77% of females were inseminated by their brothers before dispersal, which is consistent with high levels of inbreeding in eusocial species of the same clade. Sex ratios suggest random mating in K. ellobus whereas female‐biased sex ratios in O. rodwayi are consistent with inbreeding and local mate competition. 4. Comparisons among solitary and eusocial species suggest that large brood size is an ancestral trait for eusociality in thrips, and this trait persists in solitary species as an r‐selection strategy. Soldiers may have evolved in arid environments to minimise the risks of dispersal and the costs of latency to reproduction, and to maximise gall defence. 5. Temperate conditions could have facilitated the evolutionary loss of soldiers in O. rodwayi, as there should be a shorter, safer, more predictable window period between dispersal and gall induction, reducing the period of latency to reproduction following dispersal and lowering risks of dispersal. 6. The loss of soldiers in O. rodwayi is not associated with a reversion to the large brood sizes of solitary species in ancestral lineages.  相似文献

Summary Host size of Pteromalus puparum, a gregarious pupal parasitoid, shows a wide inter- and intraspecific variation. Experiments were made to study the regulation of the number and sex ratio of progeny per host by the parasitoid. The parasitoid could discriminate inter- and intraspecific size differences of the host and regulate the number of eggs according to the host size when a single female attacked the host. The sex ratio of progeny (proportion males) was about 0.1. The number of progeny laid by the female agreed with the energetically most efficient number og eggs in order to maximize total weight of progeny per host but not with the reproductively most efficient number of eggs to maximize the total fecundity of the progeny. The parasitoid laid smaller number of eggs in a half buried host, but the number was much larger than a half of those in a fully exposed host. When more than one female attacked a single host, the number and sex ratio of progeny per host increased with the number of females attacking the host, but the number of progeny per female decreased. The change of the sex ratio agreed with the prediction of the local mate competition model.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. 1. Current models of insect oviposition predict that clutch size in parasitoids should correlate with host size, with a continuum from solitary species at one end to large gregarious broods at the other. This prediction is tested for the genus Apanteles (sensu lato).
2. The distribution of brood sizes in Apanteles is bimodal, with peaks at one (solitary species) and at about twenty (gregarious species).
3. Brood size of gregarious species correlates with host size, but when a measure of the total volume of a parasitoid brood is plotted against host size, solitary species do not lie on the same regression slope as gregarious species.
4. There is a relative shortage of gregarious species on small hosts, and a relative excess of solitary species on large hosts. Solitary species on large hosts do not fully consume the host resource.
5. The possible role of evolutionary constraints to adaptive progeny allocation in Apanteles is discussed.  相似文献

Reproductive effort (relative allocation of biomass to diaspore production) was compared in matched pairs of Mediterranean and desert populations of three unrelated annual species, Erucaria hispanica (L.) Druce, Bromus fasciculatus C. Presl. and Brachypodium distachyon (L.) Beauv., grown under high and low levels of water availability in a common-environment experiment. Desert populations in all three species showed higher reproductive effort than corresponding Mediterranean populations, as expressed by both a reproductive index (RI= reproductive biomass/vegetative biomass), and a reproductive efficiency index (REI=number of diaspores/total plant biomass). Moreover, in E. hispanica and Brachypodium distachyon, inter-populational differences in reproductive effort were greater under water stress, the main limiting factor for plant growth in the desert. These results indicate that variability in reproductive effort in response to drought is a critical and dynamic component of life history strategies in annual species in heterogeneous, unpredictable xeric environments. When subjected to water stress the Mediterranean populations of E. hispanica and B. distachyon showed greater plasticity (e.g. had a greater reduction) in reproductive effort than the desert populations, while in Bromus fasciculatus both populations showed similar amounts of plasticity.  相似文献

Effects of temperature on life history variables in perch   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Population structure, recruitment, mortality, life expectancy, age at maturity, gonad development, fecundity, net reproductive rate and energy storage were studied in a perch population exposed to thermal discharge. The experiment was conducted during 1978–1990 in an artificial enclosure at a nuclear power plant on the Baltic Sea coast. Abundance increased after the plant started operating, although the proportion of larger perch dropped to a low level. Recruitment improved, but adult mortality increased. This effect was accentuated as the fishes matured very early and at a very small size, reducing their ability to support a growing gonad in high winter temperatures. During the spawning period, condition dropped to very low levels accompanied by increased mortality. Surviving fish delayed the next spawning by one or more years and reduced their fecundity. Body condition thus improved in large perch at the end of the study period. Life-time fecundity was reduced, and reproductive performance shifted to youner ages.  相似文献

Summary Reproductive effort (RE) of a day-length neutral mutant TCJ-5, its parent, and two other cultivars of jute (Corchorus capsularis) was estimated as reproductive biomass/aerial biomass. Plant height at flowering and aerial biomass were significantly higher in the mutant, while the reproductive biomass at 55 days after flowering was statistically equal. Therefore, the estimated RE was significantly lower in the mutant compared to the parent and other cultivars. The lower RE of the mutant was due to delayed initiation of flowering and additional vegetative growth in this period. The results show alteration of RE by a recessive mutation.  相似文献

Measurement of the rate of phenotypic or genetic change provides data bearing on many questions of fundamental interest to biologists, including how fast changes can proceed, whether shifts occur gradually or in bursts and how long high rates of change can be sustained. Because traits exist in functionally and genetically correlated suites, studies tracking many traits are likely to be the most informative. We quantify very rapid phenotypic changes in egg size (now smaller), clutch size (larger) and the age/size of both breeding females and males (younger, smaller) in an Alaskan population, with these traits shifting at rates from 0.13 to 0.30 haldanes over a 10-year period. In contrast, female reproductive effort and the allometric relationship of clutch size to body size changed little. These shifts appear to be caused by an altered selective landscape, with the presumed selective agent being increasing lake productivity. Some of the traits undoubtedly have at heritable component and thus represent genetic evolution as well as phenotypic.  相似文献
