Lake Agmon was created in the Hula Valley in Israel, in the northern part of the dried-up Hula Lake site, in summer, 1994. Samples of fish at ten stations were taken by electroshocker once a month, from January to December, 1996. The fish species whose food composition in the gut was examined in this study were: Tilapia zillii, Gambusia affinis, Clarias gariepinus, Cyprinus carpio, Pseudophoxinus kervillei, Acanthobrama lissneri, Hemigrammocapoeta nana and Oreochromis aureus. Food components were determined qualitatively and quantitatively. Assessment of the organism biomass in the gut contents was based on available data of phytoplankton and zooplankton. The food of G. affinis changed during the year, consisting high level of algae in winter and spring, and insects and crustaceans in summer. In T. zillii, a high percentage of algae were found in winter, and a high percentage of plants in summer. The food of H. nana consisted mainly of phytoplankton, but included high plants during most months; P. kervillei ingested mainly insects and crustaceans, with a high percentage of Daphnia spp.; and the diet of C. gariepinus comprised fish and invertebrates species, which varied with the seasons. C. carpio ate mainly invertebrates; O. aureus are vegetarian, and A. lissneri fed on both animals and plants. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Sixty km2 of the southern Hula Valley (northern Israel) peat lands were flooded in 1994 as part of the Hula Valley Restoration Project. The small, shallow lake (110 ha, mean depth < 1 m) and network of ca. 90 km of canals created were designed to ameliorate problems (e.g., underground fires, soil subsidence, increased nutrient loading downstream to Lake Kinneret) resulting from drying the Lake Hula wetlands in the 1950s. This new wetland area now serves as the focus for developing eco-tourism in northern Israel. The initial development of this new ecosystem has been followed closely by a multi-disciplinary team of researchers, with an emphasis on water quality in the new lake and the potential impact of the project on Lake Kinneret. Here we report an overview of developments in general water chemistry of Lake Agmon during its first three years (1994–1996). Water quality in Agmon was within general expectations for a shallow lake situated on peat. The first year of Agmon was characterized by the heavy influence of stream and drainage inflows with high pH, alkalinity, turbidity and electrical conductivity and high concentrations of sulfate and total dissolved solids. By the third year, however, many in lake processes (e.g., nutrient cycling and algal and macrophytic production) were well-developed and thus strongly affected lake water quality. Excessive phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations in the lake have led to hypertrophy, characterized by low dissolved oxygen concentrations and prolific blooms of nuisance algae. The management of this new ecosystem in the near future will require persistent, and innovative measures.  相似文献

A portion of the former Lake Hula wetland (northern Israel) was re-flooded in spring 1994 and the physical, chemical and biological developments within the resulting new lake and wetland complex (Agmon) was followed closely by a multi-disciplinary scientific team. The first three years of study relating to Lake Agmon are reported in this issue of Wetlands Ecology & Management. We provide in this paper a general background on the Lake Hula Draining Project in the 1950s and the recent re-flooding and creation of the Agmon wetland.  相似文献

Lake Hula and its surrounding wetland in northern Israel were drained in the late 1950s and the dried wetlands were transformed into a diverse agricultural region with a 0.3 km2 nature reserve. A portion of the extinct Hula wetland was re-flooded in April 1994 by constructing a small lake, Agmon, and 90 km of canals. The purposes of this study were (a) to document the re-population and colonization of the new Agmon wetland by birds after its flooding, (b) to evaluate bird species richness in this new wetland in comparison to that in a nearby mature Hula Nature Reserve, and, (c) to investigate if the species originally present in the Hula Valley before the drainage had been re-established. The new lake has succeeded in attracting a large variety of water birds to the newly formed habitats, especially ducks, egrets and herons, plovers, waders and snipes. The distribution of bird species among the different habitats was not random. The northern section of the lake, which is shallow and has an open shore, had the largest number of species during 1995 and 1996 and was preferred by plovers, waders and snipes. A large roosting and breeding colony of thousands of egrets and herons was formed in the dense cattails ( Typha domingensis) in the southern section of the lake. Unlike the nearby Hula Nature Reserve, the new wetland lacks a large seasonally flooded area and is less attractive for feeding and breeding plovers, waders and stilts. The new wetland also has very little muddy area without vegetation and attracts few of the species that regularly feed in this habitat in the reserve. The new wetland enlarges the area of only a few of the habitats found in the nearby reserve and therefore attracts fewer species than it might otherwise. Recommendations for management of the new wetland include increased diversity of habitats, restriction of human activities and optimization of conflicts that have arisen between the needs of the wetland and those of nearby agriculture.  相似文献

Shallow lake Agmon is a newly created subtropical wetland in north-eastern Israel. The lake is part of the Hula Project aimed at slowing down deterioration processes of the peat soils, to establish infrastructure for ecotourism as an income for the land owners, and nutrient removal from Lake Kinneret inputs. An onset of benthic filamentous macro-green algae during late winter–spring season, followed by submerged macrophytes vegetation during spring–summer was documented. The phosphorus summer loads are mostly plant–mediated internal fluxes and nitrogen intensively removed from lake waters by sedimentation and denitrification. The summer phytoplankton, mostly colonial cyanobacteria, are P limited. During 1995 and early 1996, dense Typha domingensisstands were developed in the southern half of the Lake (chalk-marl bottom sediments). The P-limited Typhavegetation collapsed within less than half a year and reappeared in the south-eastern part of the lake where sediments were exposed and oxidized. It is hypothesized that phosphorus cycle is a strong dependant of macrophyte mediation, and P deficiency in the sediments predominantly affected Typhadecline and an increase of P availability later enabled the reappearance of the Typhastands.  相似文献

The discovery of Transversotrema patialense cercariae in an aquarium harboring tropical fish triggered the present study. The purpose was to estimate the potential range of infection of local freshwater and fishpond populations by T. patialense. Experimental infection of T. patialense differed among 3 species employed: 76.5% for Tilapia zillii, 37.8% for Gambusia affinis, and none for 2 varieties of Cyprinus carpio. These patterns of infectivity are different from those published previously for T. patialense infections, and they may be attributed to the origin of the fish (temperate water vs. tropical and subtropical waters) and the size of their scales. In G. affinis, but not in the other species, worm load and fish length were closely related, and the left side harbored heavier worm burdens than the right side. Taken together, these results suggest that imported T. patialense may spread to various indigenous natural and cultured fish populations, with ensuing potential harm to these populations.  相似文献

The dynamics of the algal populations of Lake Agmon, a newly created shallow lake in the Hula Valley, Israel, were monitored following its filling in April 1994 through 1996. Additional limited field observations and measurements were taken throughout 1997. Following an initial establishment period, the dynamics of the algal populations showed a repetitive annual pattern comprised of three phases: I. a clear water phase in January–February, with low phytoplankton biomass and no metaphyton; II. a metaphyton dominance phase during March–June when mats of filamentous chlorophytes covered most of the lake's sediments while phytoplankton biomass remained low; and III. an intense phytoplankton bloom phase from June till December. The shifts from phase I to II and from phase II to III were gradual, resulting from interplay between phosphorus availability, the underwater light climate, temperature effects and zooplankton grazing pressure. The shift from phase III back to phase I was abrupt, due to winter flushing of Lake Agmon. The summer phytoplankton blooms intensified from 1994 to 1996 and shifted from chlorophyte dominance in 1994 and 1995 to cyanobacteria-dominance in 1996 and 1997. These observations, jointly with the nutrient chemistry of Lake Agmon, suggest intense eutrophication. Criteria based on phytoplankton taxonomy also indicate that Lake Agmon is eutrophic to hypertrophic. Due to the typical unstable nature of hypertrophic systems, careful management is essential to maintain the delicate ecological balance needed to ensure that the lake will fulfill its intended role as a center for eco-tourism.  相似文献

The draining of the Lake Hula and swamps, northern Israel, during the late 1950s resulted in the loss of a very diverse and rare ecosystem. Oxidation of the peat soil resulted in ground surface subsidence, while heavy autumn winds have eroded the dry peat. Moreover, agriculture on the peat soils is restricted, because of a nitrate surplus. Predictions that the sinking would continue and that more areas would go out of agricultural production led authorities to re-flood a portion of the Hula Valley in 1994. The aim of the present study was to monitor the spontaneous establishment of vegetation in the re-flooded area, the Agmon wetlands, and to reestablish some of the major plant species lost from the valley when Lake Hula was drained. Within the first two years, 74 plant species colonized the wetland spontaneously. Five out of 11 species designated for reintroduction were successfully established. Cyperus papyrus and Cynodon dactylon demonstrated sustainable potential for lake-shore stabilization. Cyperus papyrus was reintroduced from seedlings and rapidly became the dominant riparian species, while Cynodon dactylon established spontaneously. Re-introduced Nymphaea alba clones were established only in enclosures protected from grazing by the semi-aquatic mammal Myocastor coypu. Nuphar lutea and Iris pseudacorus showed better resistance to grazing. These results demonstrate a high potential for successful re-establishment of much of the original Hula swamp macrophytic vegetation by either spontaneous colonization by extant species from the surrounding areas or by introduction of locally extinct species. As such, there is a good chance that the associated faunal components of the former Lake Hula and swamps that have returned to the region since the Hula rehabilitation project commenced will continue to flourish.  相似文献

Responses to food web manipulation in a shallow waterfowl lake   总被引:4,自引:4,他引:0

The effects of fish stock reduction have been studies in 3 Dutch lakes (Lake Zwemlust, Lake Bleiswijkse Zoom and Lake Noorddiep) and 1 Danish lake (Lake Væng) during 4–5 years. A general response id described. The fish stock reduction led in general to a low fish stock, low chlorophyii-a, high transparency and high abunuance of macrophytes. Large Daphnia became abundant, but their density decreased, due to food limitation and predation by fish. The total nitrogen concentration became low due to N-uptake by macrophytes and enhanced denitrification. In Lake Bleiswijkse Zoom the water transparency deteriorated and the clear water state was not stable. The fish stock increased and the production of young fish in summer was high. lear water occurred only in spring. Large daphnids were absent in summer and the macrophytes decreased. In Lake Zwemlust, Lake Væng and Lake Noorddiep the water remained clear during the first five years. In summer of the sixth year (1992) transparency decreased in Lake Zwemlust (with high P-concentration of 1.0 mg P l-1). Also in Lake Væng (with a low nutrient concentration of 0.15 mg P.-1) a short term turbid stage (1.5 month) occurred in summer 1992 after a sudden collapse of the macrophytes. Deterioration of the water quality seems to start in summer and seems related to a collapse in macrophytes. At a low planktivorous fishstock (e.g. Lake Væng)thhe duration of the turbid state is shorter. than in presence of a high planktivorous fish biomass (e.g. Lake Zwemlust, and later years of Lake Bleiswijkse Zoom).  相似文献

The question of whether or not pre-modern hominins were responsible for the accumulation of fish remains is discussed through analyses of remains recovered from two lacustrine facies (I-4 and I-5) from Area A of the Acheulian site of Gesher Benot Ya‘aqov (GBY) in the Jordan Rift Valley, Israel. The fish remains provide the first glimpse into the naturally accumulated fish assemblage from the fluctuating shores of a lake that had been continually exploited by early hominins some 780,000 years ago. Preliminary analysis of the remains show that thirteen of the seventeen species native to Lake Hula were identified at GBY. These represent three of the five freshwater fish families native to the lake: Cyprinidae (carps), Cichlidae (tilapini, St. Peter's fish), and Clariidae (catfish). From a taphonomical perspective, a significant difference is found between the two lithofacies (Layers I-4 and I-5) in terms of species composition, richness, diversity, and skeleton completeness. It appears that the fish remains recovered from Layer I-4 (clay) are better preserved than those from Layer I-5 (coquina). In both lithofacies, Cyprinidae are highly abundant while Cichlidae and Clariidae are rare and under-represented, especially when compared to the Lake Hula fishery report from the 1950s. All of these identified species may have contributed significantly to the diet of GBY hominins.  相似文献

Major biogeochemical processes in the newly created, shallow Lake Agmon (Hula Valley, northern Israel) were investigated from 1994 to 1996. Sediment cores, lake water and porewater were analyzed for chemical composition and spatial distribution. Sediment analyses revealed that Lake Agmon has two different sediment types: peat sediments in the northern and central parts, and marls in the southern part. The basic composition of the lake's water was controlled mainly by the mixing of two distinct water types (Jordan River and water drainage), and by evaporation. About 3/4 of the lake water originated from the Jordan Inlet, a quarter through the Z Canal Inlet (peat drainage) and a minor amount from groundwater seepage. Lake Agmon is unique among freshwater wetlands owing to its high SO 4 2– content, which is ca. 1/3 that of sea water. This characteristic is ascribed to the dissolution of secondary gypsum, formed in the peat soils since the drainage of the historic Hula Marsh. Leaching gypsum from the shallow sediments during the first few months after flooding was followed by a later stage of constant diffusion and advection of SO 4 2– from gypsum dissolution in deeper sediments. Gypsum dissolution in lake sediments contributed ca. half of the SO4 2– and Ca2+ inputs to the lake. The concomitant increase of Ca2+ combined with alkalinity release due to organic matter decomposition in the sediments led to the precipitation of CaCO3. This precipitation was enhanced by photosynthesis, particularly during summers, and consumed about a tenth of the Ca2+ and third of the alkalinity outputs from the lake. Iron-hydroxide was the main agent for microbial oxidation of organic matter, surpassing by far the role of sulfate, nitrate and manganese as electron acceptors. The produced Fe2+ was transported upward by diffusion and advection and oxidized to ferric iron at the sediment-water interface. There is evidence, however, that some sulfate was reduced, but most of the produced sulfide reacted with ferrous iron and accumulated in the sediments as FeS minerals. Therefore, despite high sulfate concentrations, the high iron availability restricted release of toxic sulfides into the water and thereby served to maintain reasonable water quality.  相似文献

The diet of largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, in Lake Naivasha, Kenya   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake situated in the eastern rift valley of Kenya. Only five species of fish are present, all of which have been introduced. Of these, Oreochromis leucostictus, Tilapia zillii and Micropterus salmoides (largemouth black bass) support an important gillnet fishery with bass also being taken for sport. Until bass reached 260 mm f.l. they depended upon invertebrate food organisms. Thereafter crayfish, fish and frogs became increasingly important the larger the size of the bass. The most important invertebrate prey species was the water boatman, Micronecta scutellaris , followed by chironomid and culicid pupae. Zooplank-ton was consumed but only in large quantity by fish smaller than 80 mm. For bass over 260 mm the crayfish, Procambarus darkii , was the principal food. The largemouth bass in Lake Naivasha are generalized macro-predators, feeding principally on free-living animals of a kind most likely to be found in the littoral zones.  相似文献

The factors that determine parasite assemblages among the clariid fishes of Lake Victoria, Tanzania were studied between August 2003 and February 2005. Six hundred and fifty-six fish belonging to seven species were necropsied and examined for parasites, from which 31 species of metazoan parasites were recorded. The community was dominated by the nematodes both in species and numbers. Most species were generalists with only two trematodes, Diplostomum mashonense and Tylodelphys species, being specialists of Clarias gariepinus. Ten species were considered core and predictable. Parasite species richness, number of individuals per host and Shannon-Wiener diversity indices were generally high. At the compound community level, a mean number of 7.8 parasites were shared among different species of fish and the maximum number of parasites species per fish at the infracommunity level was seven. Levels of similarity in parasite species richness at the component community level ranged from 29.6 to 61.5%. The study concludes that parasite communities in clariid fishes of Lake Victoria are structured by ecological factors. At the infracommunity level, host size, diet and vagility promoted a richer parasite community. At the compound level, two factors were crucial, namely the intermixing of the waters in the lake and the predominant and mobile C. gariepinus.  相似文献

In our study, we focused on littoral Cladocera living and feeding in shallow shore parts of 46 mountain lakes in the Tatra Mountains (Slovakia and Poland). The studied lakes underwent a major acidification event in the 1980s and are now in the process of recovery. Lakes were divided into three categories based on their sensitivity to acidification: 5 extremely sensitive (ES), 11 acid sensitive (AS), and 30 non-sensitive (NS) lakes. In our study, we included historical data from the literature, and data from sediment core and littoral samples, which together represent the evolution of the littoral communities from a pre-industrial period up to the present. In total, 11 littoral species were found belonging to three cladoceran families. Most of the species were members of the family Chydoridae: Alona affinis, A. quadrangularis, A. rectangula, A. guttata, Acroperus harpae, Alonella excisa, A. nana, Chydorus sphaericus, and Eurycercus lamellatus. One species belonged to each family Daphniidae (Ceriodaphnia quadrangula) and Polyphemidae (Polyphemus pediculus). The most numerous littoral taxa were Alona affinis, Acroperus harpae, and Chydorus sphaericus. All species reacted to decreased pH levels during peak acidification in the 1980s by disappearing from most of the lakes of all categories; the only persisting species was Chydorus sphaericus. Most species returned to the lakes when pH started to increase in the 1990s, although their return was noticeably slower in AS lakes. Alona quadrangularis decreased its distribution range over the studied period; Polyphemus pediculus was mostly detected in the 1910s only. The number of species was highest in all lake categories when dwarf pine was present in the lake catchment. On the whole, the littoral community was richest in NS lakes.  相似文献

The seasonal distribution of the cyprinid herpesvirus 3 (CyHV-3) in Lake Biwa, Japan, was investigated. CyHV-3 was distributed all over the lake 5 years after the first outbreak. The mean concentration of CyHV-3 in water showed annual oscillation, with a peak in the summer and a trough in winter. Our results suggested that CyHV-3 is present at high density in reductive environments, such as reed zones and turbid or eutrophic water.A novel fatal disease of fish caused by cyprinid herpesvirus 3 (CyHV-3), also known as koi herpesvirus or carp interstitial nephritis and gill necrosis virus, which infects the common carp (Cyprinus carpio carpio) and ornamental koi (Cyprinus carpio koi) was reported at the end of the 1990s, and it has spread rapidly worldwide (13). In 2003, the first mass mortality in Japan was observed in Lake Kasumigaura, Ibaraki Prefecture (17), and the disease immediately spread all over the country.Lake Biwa is the largest and oldest freshwater lake in Japan. It occupies 670 km2, and the total length of the coastline is 241 km. The first and relatively small-scale mortality caused by CyHV-3 was observed in the autumn of 2003 in Lake Biwa, and mass mortality occurred in the following spring, in which more than 100,000 carp died (10). Thus, the disease is a great threat not only to the cultivation industry and koi collectors but also to the natural carp population. Carp is regarded as an ecological engineer that has an impact on freshwater ecosystems, and therefore, mass mortality will affect the entire lake ecosystem (10).The pathogenesis and diagnosis of the disease have been studied intensively, but the dynamics of CyHV-3 has not been clarified. Recently, the major portal of CyHV-3 entry was reported to be fish skin (2), which means that infection via water is possible. Thus, to determine the method by which the virus spreads and to evaluate the infectious risk in the environment, one must clarify the CyHV-3 dynamics in the natural environment. In the present study, we surveyed the seasonal distribution pattern of CyHV-3 in Lake Biwa, Japan, using a quantitative method.  相似文献

Synopsis Nile perch, Lates niloticus, and Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, were originally transplanted from Lake Albert in western Uganda to the African Great Lakes, Lake Victoria and Lake Kyoga, where they are partially implicated in reduction of the fish species diversity. Lake Albert is facing multiple environmental changes, including declining fish species diversity, hyper-eutrophication, hypoxia, and reduced fish catches. To examine the role of Nile perch and Nile tilapia in the food web in their native Lake Albert, we estimated their diets using stable nitrogen and carbon isotopes. In Lake Albert, the tilapiine congeners (closely related species), Tilapia zillii, Oreochromis leucostictus, and Sarethorodon galilaeus, and the centropomid Nile perch congener, Lates macrophthalmus, have narrower diet breath in the presence of the native O. niloticus and L. niloticus. A computerized parameter search of dietary items for five commercially important fish species (Hydrocynus forskahlii, Bagrus bayad, L. niloticus, Alestes baremose and Brycinus nurse) was completed using a static isotopic mixing model. The outcome of the simulation for most fish species compared favorably to previously published stomach contents data for the Lake Albert fishes dating back to 1928, demonstrating agreement between stable isotope values and analyses of stomach contents. While there were some indications of changes in the diets of L. niloticus and A. baremose diets over the past 20 years in parallel with other changes in the lake, for the most part, food web structure in this lake remained stable since 1928. The Lake Albert fish assemblage provides insight into the invasion success of L. niloticus and O. niloticus.  相似文献

Synopsis Analysis of the fish faunas of Lake Opinicon and other small, cold temperate Ontario water bodies shows that the component species differ in body size, morphology, abundances, habitats, diurnal and seasonal habitat utilization patterns, diets, dietary changes with age, reproductive strategies, and population turnover rates. These differences are detailed. The number of species occurring in a lake is partly due to historic factors, the number of habitats available, and morphological, behavioral and ecological adaptations that, by channelling their owners towards alternative resources, permit species to co-occur. Diet overlap values between most species are low except for the congeneric bluegill and pump-kinseed sunfishes, where values are moderate. These are the two commonest species in the lake and other parameters must increase the ecological differences between these two species.Lake Opinicon is a highly variable ecosystem. Part of this variability stems from the seasonal nature of the environment and the fact that different resources reach their peak abundance at different times of the year. Ecological overlap levels between fish species fluctuate greatly in the course of the season as species switch from, or move on to, different resources. Population levels in different habitats also vary seasonally. Species adaptations and interaction patterns were presumably evolved over a long period; most of these adaptations undoubtedly developed before the component species colonized the lake. This paper forms part of the proceedings of a mini-symposium convened at Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., 18–19 May 1976, entitled Patterns of Community Structure in Fishes (G. S. Helfman, ed.).  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships between seven species of the catfish species flock from Lake Malawi (genus Bathyclarias) and other Clariid catfish have been investigated using cytochrome b partial sequences. Here we demonstrate that this species flock originated from a widespread, generalist species, Clarias gariepinus, still occurring in the lake. Bathyclarias species and their ancestor C. gariepinus form a simple model that can be used to understand the mechanisms of adaptation and rapid speciation in African Great lakes.  相似文献
