In the work described here, a biotrickling filter with Thiobacillus thioparus (ATCC 23645) immobilized on polyurethane foam is proposed for the removal of hydrogen sulfide contained in air. The effect of surface velocity of the recirculation medium (5.9–1.2 m/h), sulfate concentration inhibition (3.0–10.7 g/L), pH (6.0–8.2), empty bed residence time (EBRT) (150–11 s) for constant loads of 11.5 and 2.9 g S/m3/h, and pressure drop of the system were investigated.  相似文献

A study was conducted on H2S removal in a biotrickling filter packed with open-pore polyurethane foam. Thiobacillus denitrificans was used as inoculum and a mixed culture population was developed during the process. The inhibitory effect of sulphate concentration (1.8–16.8 g L−1), pH (6.9–8.6), trickling liquid velocity (TLV, 9.1–22.8 m h−1), H2S inlet concentration (20–157 ppmv) and the empty bed residence time (EBRT, 9–57 s) on the H2S removal efficiency (RE) were thoroughly investigated. An increase in pH from 6.9 to 8.5 led to a corresponding increase in H2S removal. In addition, an inhibitory effect of sulphate concentration was observed from 16.8 g L−1 and the maximum elimination capacity was found to be 22 gS m−3 h−1 (RE 98%). The RE was constant (98.8 ± 0.30%) for EBRT  16 s, but a decrease in the EBRT from 16 to 9 s led to a corresponding decrease in RE from 98.2 to 89.6% for a TLV of 9.1 m h−1 and from 97.9 to 94.9% for a TLV of 22.8 m h−1 (inlet load of 11.0 ± 0.2 gS m−3 h−1). The sulphur oxidation capacity in the biotrickling filter was not diminished by the presence of other bacteria.  相似文献

The performance of moving bed sequencing batch reactors (MBSBRs) added with 8 % (v/v) of polyurethane (PU) foam cubes as carrier media in nitrogen removal was investigated in treating low COD/N wastewater. The results indicate that MBSBR with 8-mL cubes achieved the highest total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency of 37% during the aeration period, followed by 31%, 24% and 19 % for MBSBRs with 27-, 64- and 125-mL cubes, respectively. The increased TN removal in MBSBRs was mainly due to simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) process which was verified by batch studies. The relatively lower TN removal in MBSBR with larger PU foam cubes was attributed to the observation that larger PU foam cubes were not fully attached by biomass. Higher concentrations of 8-mL PU foam cubes in batch reactors yielded higher TN removal.  相似文献

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a major malodorous compound emitted from wastewater treatment plants. In this study, the performance of three pilot-scale immobilized-cell biotrickling filters (BTFs) spacked with combinations of bamboo charcoal and ceramsite in different ratios was investigated in terms of H2S removal. Extensive tests were performed to determine the removal characteristics, pressure drops, metabolic products, and removal kinetics of the BTFs. The BTFs were operated in continuous mode at low loading rates varying from 0.59 to 5.00 g H2S m−3 h−1 with an empty bed retention time (EBRT) of 25 s. The removal efficiency (RE) for each BTF was >99% in the steady-state period, and high standards were met for the exhaust gas. It was found that a multilayer BTF had a slight advantage over a perfectly mixed BTF for the removal of H2S. Furthermore, an impressive amount >97% of the H2S was eliminated by 10% of packing materials near the inlet of the BTF. The modified Michaelis–Menten equation was adopted to describe the characteristics of the BTF, and Ks and Vm values for the BTF with pure bamboo charcoal packing material were 3.68 ppmv and 4.26 g H2S m−3 h−1, respectively. Both bamboo charcoal and ceramsite demonstrated good performance as packing materials in BTFs for the removal of H2S, and the results of this study could serve as a guide for further design and operation of industrial-scale systems.  相似文献

The information available on the microbial communities responsible for pollutant degradation is increasingly accessible. Its use to optimize process design and operation is an important challenge in the field of effluent treatment research. Therefore, a prototype of a moving bed biotrickling filter (MBBTF) reactor was designed and, for the first time, operated at full-scale for the removal of sulfides desorbing from tannery industrial wastewater. The bacterial community operating in this innovative reactor was studied, and its composition and response to different operating conditions were characterized. A stable biomass, dominated by sulfur-oxidizing bacteria of the genus Acidithiobacillus was selected from inside the MBBTF reactor, and temperature, pH and bed rotation were shown to be the main factors driving the community structure. Moreover, data from different approaches indicated an uneven spatial distribution of biofilm inside the studied reactor, due to the combined effect of fluid dynamics and substrate gradients within the bed volume. Despite the high removal efficiency achieved by this innovative prototype (80% on average), the data suggested that the result could be improved by adopting solutions for a more stable and even biofilm distribution. It was shown that short frequent bed rotations, rather than long scattered rotations, ensured biomass stability. Furthermore, diversifying biofilm support media as a function of expected local pollutant concentrations should be considered. Data obtained from the bacterial community can therefore provide indications for possible further improvement of MBBTF reactor design and performance.  相似文献

A Sporothrix variecibatus-inoculated biotrickling filter (BTF) was examined for styrene removal, without and with the addition of silicone oil, at different empty bed residence times. The highest elimination capacities (ECs) were 172.8 (without silicone oil) and 670 g m−3 h−1 (with silicone oil), respectively, corresponding to a 4-fold improvement in presence of oil. The addition of silicone oil formed a well-coalesced emulsion of fungi and silicone oil, resulting in filter-bed clogging. Clogging prevention strategies adopted were; (i) lowering the volume ratio of silicone oil from 10% to 2% (v/v), and (ii) periodic increase in trickling rate of the medium from 50 to 190 mL min−1. During shock-load experiments, the BTF with silicone oil (2% v/v) could withstand high styrene loads, of up to 1900 g m−3 h−1, when compared to the BTF without silicone oil (400 g m−3 h−1).  相似文献

A novel anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic (AOA) process is proposed to realize denitrifying phosphorous removal in this study, and the characteristic of the AOA process is transferring part of the anaerobic mixed liquor to the post-anoxic zone for providing the carbon source needed for denitrification. The AOA process was operated for 3 months, and the average removal efficiencies of NH4+-N, TN and PO4(3-)-P were 93.0±3.1%, 70.3±2.9% and 87.3±11.8%, respectively. A mass balance analysis indicated that 0.49±0.02 g VSS(-1) d(-1) of PO4(3-)-P and 0.23±0.04 g VSS(-1) d(-1) of NO3--N were simultaneously removed in the anoxic zone, and it is speculated that denitrifying phosphorous removal occurred in the AOA process. Furthermore, 0.24±0.06 g VSS(-1) d(-1) of TN was removed in the aerobic zone via simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND). The results demonstrate that the multi-zone structure of the AOA process favors the enhancement of denitrifying phosphorous removal and SND for municipal wastewater treatment.  相似文献

Efficient removal of dissolved nickel was observed in a biologically active moving-bed `MERESAFIN' sand filter treating rinsing water from an electroless nickel plating plant. Although nickel is fully soluble in this waste water, its passage through the sand filter promoted rapid removal of approximately 1 mg Ni/l. The speciation of Ni in the waste water was modelled; the most probable precipitates forming under the conditions in the filter were predicted using PHREEQC. Analyses of the Ni-containing biosludge using chemical, electron microscopical and X-ray spectroscopic techniques confirmed crystallisation of nickel phosphate as arupite (Ni3(PO4)2.8H2O), together with hydroxyapatite within the bacterial biofilm on the filter sand grains. Biosorption contributed less than 1% of the overall sequestered nickel. Metabolising bacteria are essential for the process; the definitive role of specific components of the mixed population is undefined but the increase in pH promoted by metabolic activity of some microbial components is likely to promote nickel desolubilisation by others.  相似文献

A bioreactor for the removal of nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N) from industrial effluent is described which is comprised of a glass column (60 cm × 6 cm) packed with alginate beads containing denitrifying organisms Pseudomonas stutzeri and Comamonas testosteroni. The effluent containing high concentrations of nitrate (600–950 mg l–1) from the fertilizer industry and fusel oil (methanol as a major component) as organic carbon were used in the process. The reactor is operated in the continuous mode by injecting the pretreated nitrate-containing effluent at the top of the column. The Hydraulic retention time (HRT) was adjusted by changing the flow rates. When nitrate-containing wastewater was treated with immobilized cells, the nitrate removal rate reached a maximum 1.66 ± 0.07 Kg NO3-N m–3d–1 at an influent NO3-N concentration of 850 mg NO3M-N l–1within 12 h. The denitrification activity of the immobilized cells was compared with that of the free cells.  相似文献

The removal of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) from industrial gas streams has received a high priority due to its very low odorous threshold value and relatively low biodegradability compared to other reduced sulfur compounds. A variety of bacteria that utilize DMS as a carbon/energy source have been studied and the degradation pathway elucidated. However, to date, there have been few reports on the industrial application of such bacteria inoculated into a bioreactor for DMS treatment. An additional problem of such systems is the accumulation of intermediate metabolites that strongly impact on DMS removal by the microbe. The results reported here were obtained using a bioreactor inoculated with the H(2)S-degrader Pseudomonas putida and the DMS-degrader Microbacterium sp. NTUT26 to facilitate removal of metabolic intermediates and DMS. This bioreactor performed well (1.71 g-S/day/kg-dry packing material) in terms of DMS gas removal, based on an evaluation of the apparent kinetics and maximal removal capacity of the system. Under varying conditions (changes in start-up, inlet loading, shutdown, and re-start), the bioreactor inoculated with Microbacterium sp. NTUT26 and P. putida enhanced removal of high concentrations of DMS. Our results suggest that this type of bioreactor system has significant potential applications in treating (industrial) DMS gas streams.  相似文献
