The pathogenesis of Fusarium solani infections was studied using a highly susceptible species, Penaeus californiensis. In two experiments, F. solani infections were established in artificially wounded and infected juvenile and adults of P. californiensis, while similar control groups were wounded but not artificially infected. In the first experiment, the progress of F. solani infections in 15-g cultured juveniles of P. californiensis was followed by gross inspection and by light and electron microscopical study of the wound area. Developing F. solani infections were produced with a success rate of 100% within 14 days postinfection, and deaths due to disease of greater than 50% of the artificially infected group had occurred by 24 days postinfection. Infections were histologically characterized by (1) expansion of lesions into the tissue surrounding the point of entry, (2) destruction of invaded tissues by host granuloma formation and possibly by fungal enzymes and toxins, and (3) hemocyte encapsulation of hyphae with eventual melanization of the encapsulating hemocytes. In the second study, wild adult P. californiensis were artificially infected with F. solani, and changes in several of their hemolymph constituents [alkaline phosphatase, serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), glucose, total protein, hemocyte count, and hematopoietic tissue mitotic index] were determined as the disease developed. Significant differences occurred in these hemolymph parameters of shrimp with advanced F. solani infections compared to those of uninfected, unwounded control shrimp or those with early F. solani infections. Hemolymph from severely infected shrimp was hypoproteinemic, contained lower numbers of circulating hemocytes, and frequently failed to coagulate.  相似文献

Several species of Vibrio are the causative agent of gastroenteritis in humans. In aquaculture, Vibrio harveyi (Vh) and V. parahaemolyticus (Vp) have long been considered as shrimp pathogens in freshwater, brackish and marine environments. Here we show by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) that Penaeus monodon orally inoculated with each of these two pathogens via an Artemia diet had numerous bacteria attached randomly across the stomach surface, in single and in large biofilm-like clusters 6 h post-infection. A subsequent marked proliferation in the number of V. harveyi within the biofilm-like formations resulted in the development of infections in the stomach, the upper and middle midgut, but neither in the posterior midgut nor the hindgut. SEM also revealed the induced production of peritrichous pili-like structures by the Vp attaching to the stomach lining, whilst only a single polar fibre was seen forming an apparent physical bridge between Vh and the host’s epithelium. In contrast to these observations, no such adherences or linkages were seen when trials were conducted with non-pathogenic Vibrio spp. or with Micrococcus luteus, with no obvious resultant changes to the host’s gut surface. In naive shrimp, the hindgut was found to be a favorable site for bacteria notably curved, short-rod shaped bacteria which probably belong to Vibrio spp. Data from the current study suggests that pathogens of P. monodon must be able to colonize the digestive tract, particularly the stomach, where chitin is present, and then they use an array of virulent factors and enzymes to infect their host resulting in disease. Oral infection is a better way of mimicking natural routes of infection; investigating the host-bacteria interactions occurring in the digestive tract may lead to new strategies for the prevention or control of bacterial infections in penaeids.  相似文献

Populations of the Pacific blue shrimp, Penaeus stylirostris, reared at the University of Arizona's experimental shrimp culture facility on Oahu in Hawaii from late 1980 through 1981, were severely affected by a highly acute and lethal disease of viral etiology. Also found to be susceptible to the disease were P. vannamei and P. monodon. The disease was named infectious hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis (IHHN) disease to describe the principal lesions observed. The histopathology of acute and subacute IHHN disease in these species was dominated by the presence of conspicuous eosinophilic intranuclear-inclusion bodies of the Cowdry type A variety in ectodermally (especially the cuticular hypodermis) and mesodermally (especially the hematopoietic tissues) derived tissues that were undergoing necrosis. Electron microscopy of affected tissues demonstrated the presence of two or three types of virus-like particles with cubic morphology and diameters of 17 to 27 nm that suggest IHHN virus to be either a parvo- or picornavirus.  相似文献

The acute and subacute toxicity of aflatoxin B1 to the marine shrimp Penaeus stylirostris and P. vannamei (Order: Decapoda, Class: Crustacea) was investigated. Experimental shrimp were exposed to a range of concentrations of the toxin directly by intramascular injection (from 2 to 160 μg aflatoxin B1/g body weight), or by multiple per os dosing with the feed (from 53 to 300 μg aflatoxin B1/g feed) for up to 25 days. The histopathogenesis of aflatoxicosis in the aflatoxin-exposed animals was followed and found to be time and dose dependent in the hepatopancreas, mandibular organ, and in the hematopoietic organs. Less significant and/or inconsistent lesions were also observed in other organs and tissues, but a time-dose dependency was not noted. The principal lesions of aflatoxicosis in penaeid shrimp occur in the hepatopancreas and the mandibular organ. In the former organ, subacute and acute aflatoxicosis is expressed as necrosis of the hepatopancreatic tubule epithelium that proceeds from the proximal (older) portion of the tubules, in the center of the organ, to the peripheral (younger) tubule tips. A marked intertubular hemocytic inflammation followed by encapsulation and fibrosis of affected tubules follows in subacute aflatoxicosis, but is not as developed as in acute aflatoxicosis. The mandibular organ in aflatoxicosis displays a necrosis of the peripheral epithelial cells of the cords within the gland that progresses proximally to the central vein. Only a slight hemocytic inflammation accompanies the degenerative changes in this latter organ.  相似文献

The host‐associated microbiota is increasingly recognized to facilitate host fitness, but the understanding of the underlying ecological processes that govern the host–bacterial colonization over development and, particularly, under disease remains scarce. Here, we tracked the gut microbiota of shrimp over developmental stages and in response to disease. The stage‐specific gut microbiotas contributed parallel changes to the predicted functions, while shrimp disease decoupled this intimate association. After ruling out the age‐discriminatory taxa, we identified key features indicative of shrimp health status. Structural equation modelling revealed that variations in rearing water led to significant changes in bacterioplankton communities, which subsequently affected the shrimp gut microbiota. However, shrimp gut microbiotas are not directly mirrored by the changes in rearing bacterioplankton communities. A neutral model analysis showed that the stochastic processes that govern gut microbiota tended to become more important as healthy shrimp aged, with 37.5% stochasticity in larvae linearly increasing to 60.4% in adults. However, this defined trend was skewed when disease occurred. This departure was attributed to the uncontrolled growth of two candidate pathogens (over‐represented taxa). The co‐occurrence patterns provided novel clues on how the gut commensals interact with candidate pathogens in sustaining shrimp health. Collectively, these findings offer updated insight into the ecological processes that govern the host–bacterial colonization in shrimp and provide a pathological understanding of polymicrobial infections.  相似文献

Pink shrimp (Pandalus jordani), a commercially harvested species in Oreegon, Washington, and California, hosts four species of microsporidian parasites: Thelohania butleri, Pleistophora crangoni, and two undescribed species placed in the collective group, Microsporidium. All parasitize the skeletal musculature giving shrimp a whitish, opaque appearance. The prevalence of microsporidian infectionin P. jordani was studied over a 6-year period (1975–1980) and was found to be very low. Of the 207, 942 shrimp exmined, 0.19% were infected with one of the four species. No substantial differences in prevalence were observed between different sampling areas in Oregon and Washington or during the years sampled. The four species occurred in each sampling area in about the same portion. T. butleri was predominant and accounted for 78.7% of all infections. Heavy exploitation of host shrimp is suggested as a possible explanation for the low microsporidian infection rates in the P. jordani population.  相似文献

The endodermal region of the digestive system in the freshwater shrimp Neocaridina heteropoda (Crustacea, Malacostraca) consists of a tube-shaped intestine and large hepatopancreas, which is formed by numerous blind-ended tubules. The precise structure and ultrastructure of these regions were presented in our previous studies, while here we focused on the cell death processes and their effect on the functioning of the midgut. We used transmission electron microscopy, light and confocal microscopes to describe and detect cell death, while a quantitative assessment of cells with depolarized mitochondria helped us to establish whether there is the relationship between cell death and the inactivation of mitochondria. Three types of the cell death were observed in the intestine and hepatopancreas–apoptosis, necrosis and autophagy. No differences were observed in the course of these processes in males and females and or in the intestine and hepatopancreas of the shrimp that were examined. Our studies revealed that apoptosis, necrosis and autophagy only involves the fully developed cells of the midgut epithelium that have contact with the midgut lumen–D-cells in the intestine and B- and F-cells in hepatopancreas, while E-cells (midgut stem cells) did not die. A distinct correlation between the accumulation of E-cells and the activation of apoptosis was detected in the anterior region of the intestine, while necrosis was an accidental process. Degenerating organelles, mainly mitochondria were neutralized and eventually, the activation of cell death was prevented in the entire epithelium due to autophagy. Therefore, we state that autophagy plays a role of the survival factor.  相似文献

Cultured populations of four penaeid shrimp species (Crustacea, Decapoda) from four separate culture facilities in Asia were found to be adversely affected by a disease of presumed viral etiology. Individual shrimp with the disease displayed nonspecific signs, including poor growth rate, anorexia, reduced preening activity, increased surface fouling, and occasional opacity of tail musculature. These signs were accompanied by mortalities during the juvenile stages, after apparently normal development through the larval and postlarval stages. Accumulative mortality rates in epizootics in Penaeus merguiensis and P. semisulcatus reached as high as 50 to 100%, respectively, of the affected populations within 4 to 8 weeks of disease onset. The principal lesion, common to all four species, was necrosis and atrophy of the hepatopancreas, accompanied by the presence of large prominent basophilic, PAS-negative, Fuelgen-positive intranuclear inclusion bodies in affected hepatopancreatic tubule epithelial cells (hepatopancreatocytes). These inclusion bodies presumably developed from small, eosinophilic, intranuclear bodies that were also present in the affected tissues. Electron microscopy of affected hepatopancreatocytes revealed aggregations of 22- to 24-nm-diameter virus particles within the electron-dense granular inclusion body ground substance. The virus particle size and morphology, the close association of the nucleolus with the developing inclusion body, and the presence of intranuclear bodies within developing inclusion bodies are similar to cytopathological features reported for parvovirus infections in insects and vertebrates. It is suggested that this presumed virus disease of cultured penaeid shrimp be called HPV for Hepatopancreatic Parvo-like Virus disease.  相似文献

Amber disease of the New Zealand grass grub Costelytra zealandica (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) is caused by ingestion of pADAP plasmid carrying isolates of Serratia entomophila or Serratia proteamaculans (Enterobacteriaceae) and causes infected larvae to cease feeding and clear their midgut to a pale amber colour where midgut serine protease activities are virtually eliminated. Using bacterial strains and mutants expressing combinations of the anti-feeding (afp) and gut clearance (sep) gene clusters from pADAP, we manipulated the disease phenotype and demonstrated directly the relationship between gene clusters, phenotype and loss of enzyme activity. Treatment with afp-expressing strains caused cessation of feeding without gut clearance where midgut protease activity was maintained at levels similar to that of healthy larvae. Treatment with strains expressing sep-genes caused gut clearance followed by a virtual elimination of trypsin and chymotrypsin titre in the midgut indicating both the loss of pre-existing enzyme from the lumen and a failure to replenish enzyme levels in this region by secretion from the epithelium. Monitoring of enzymatic activity through the alimentary tract during expression of disease showed that loss of serine protease activity in the midgut was matched by a surge of protease activity in the hindgut and frass pellets, indicating a flushing and elimination of the midgut contents. The blocking of enzyme secretion through amber disease appears to be selective as leucine aminopeptidase and α-amylase were still detected in the midgut of diseased larvae.  相似文献

Aims: The objective of the work was to determine whether known strains of nonpathogenic vibrios can act as probiotics for the control of Vibrio infections in the Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei. Methods and Results: Of the ten species tested, only Vibrio alginolyticus (NCIMB 1339) and Vibrio gazogenes (NCIMB 2250) showed antagonistic activity towards a panel of shrimp pathogenic vibrios. In the case of V. alginolyticus, this activity depended on the presence of live bacteria while in V. gazogenes both live and dead bacteria showed anti‐Vibrio activity. Injection of shrimp with either V. alginolyticus or V. gazogenes at 3 × 107 or 3 × 105 total bacteria per shrimp resulted in mortality with higher levels in the case of V. alginolyticus (100% mortality 18 h postinjection of 3 × 107 bacteria). Juvenile shrimp were fed commercial diets top‐coated with either chitin (an immune stimulant) or chitin + V. gazogenes. Both chitin and V. gazogenes caused a significant decline in the number of Vibrio‐like bacteria in the fore and hind gut, and changes were also seen in the hepatosomatic index (a measure of digestive health) and the total number of blood cells in circulation. Analysis of mid/hindgut and faecal samples obtained using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism showed that the gut microbiota of shrimp has limited bacterial diversity and that after 8 weeks exposure to the experimental diets there were significant changes in the microbial flora of the GI tract of shrimp as a result of the presence of V. gazogenes. Conclusions: Of the vibrios tested, V. gazogenes has potential as a probiotic for the control of bacterial diseases in shrimp. Significance and Impact of the Study: Overall, this study shows the promise of V. gazogenes together with chitin to improve the health and welfare of shrimp under aquaculture conditions.  相似文献

Soil-transmitted helminths, such as roundworms (Ascaris lumbricoides), whipworms (Trichuris trichiura) and hookworms (Necator americanus and Ancylostoma spp.), are gastrointestinal parasites that occur predominantly in low- to middle-income countries worldwide and disproportionally impact children. Depending on the STH species, health status of the host and infection intensity, direct impacts of these parasites include malnutrition, anaemia, diarrhoea and physical and cognitive stunting. The indirect consequences of these infections are less well understood. Specifically, gastrointestinal infections may exert acute or chronic impacts on the natural gut microfauna, leading to increased risk of post-infectious gastrointestinal disorders, and reduced gut and overall health through immunomodulating mechanisms. To date a small number of preliminary studies have assessed the impact of helminths on the gut microbiome, but these studies are conflicting. Here, we assessed STH burden in 273 pre-school and school-aged children in Tha Song Yang district, Tak province, Thailand receiving annual oral mebendazole treatment. Ascaris lumbricoides (107/273) and Trichuris trichiura (100/273) were the most prevalent species and often occurred as co-infections (66/273). Ancylostoma ceylanicum was detected in a small number of children as well (n = 3). All of these infections were of low intensity (<4,999 or 999 eggs per gram for Ascaris and Trichuris respectively). Using this information, we characterised the baseline gut microbiome profile and investigated acute STH-induced alterations, comparing infected with uninfected children at the time of sampling. We found no difference between these groups in bacterial alpha-diversity, but did observe differences in beta-diversity and specific differentially abundant OTUs, including increased Akkermansia muciniphila and Bacteroides coprophilus, and reduced Bifidobacterium adolescentis, each of which have been previously implicated in STH-associated changes in the gut microfauna.  相似文献

The effects of different particle sizes (100–150, 74–100, and <74 μm) of powder of the dried and ground stipe from the monkey head mushroom, Hericium erinaceum, on the immune response and disease resistance of white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, against the pathogen, Vibrio alginolyticus, were examined. Mushroom powder with a particle size of <74 μm had a significantly higher effect on the disease resistance of shrimp compared to particle sizes of >74 μm. Mortality of shrimp after being injected with V. alginolyticus was particle size-dependent, increasing from 66.7% ± 3.3%–93.3% ± 3.3% with diets containing stipe particle sizes of <74 and 100–150 μm, respectively. The mortality of shrimp fed the diet containing <74-μm stipe powder for 28 days was significant lower than that of shrimp fed with the control diet and the diet containing 74–100-μm stipe powder after being challenged by V. alginolyticus. The optimal concentration of the <74-μm mushroom powder for enhancing the immune response and disease resistance of shrimp was 0.2 μg (g shrimp)?1 day?1. No significant change in the total hemocyte count, differential hemocyte count, glutathione reductase, or phagocytic activity was found in shrimp fed the control diet and mushroom powder-containing diet at a level of up to 0.2 μg (g shrimp)?1 day?1. Shrimp fed 0.2 μg (g shrimp)?1 day?1 of a mushroom-containing diet had a significantly higher disease resistance to V. alginolyticus via an increase in phenoloxidase activity, respiratory bursts, superoxide dismutase activity, and glutathione peroxidase activity. Therefore, a diet containing the stipe powder of monkey head mushroom with a particle size <74 μm at a level of 0.2 μg (g shrimp)?1 day?1 was found to enhance the immunity and disease resistance of shrimp.  相似文献

Seventy-seven specimens of seven freshwater fish species harvested in four sites from rivers and ponds of the Gauteng, North West and Limpopo Provinces (South Africa) were surveyed for coccidian infections. Two fish species were infected with apicomplexans belonging to Goussia Labbé, 1896. In banded tilapia Tilapia sparrmanii Smith unsporulated oöcysts of G. vanasi (Landsberg &; Paperna, 1987) were found which became sporulated in tap-water within 24 hours. Another species in the gut of chubbyhead barb Barbus anoplus Weber harboured sporulated oöcysts in the faeces and in the intestinal epithelium. To document the relative importance of meiofauna as prey for juvenile Crangon crangon and Carcinus maenus, short interval (1.5-2 h) collections were made in the muddy Lynher Estuary (Plymouth, Great Britain) and in the sandy-bottom Ythan Estuary (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) in 1990. Gut passage times of Crangon fed flaked fish food and fluorescent tracer in the laboratory at 13 °C ranged from 4 to 20 h. Wild shrimp exhibited feeding periodicity, with guts fullest during high tide in both locations. Visual and immunological gut contents analyses revealed that meiofaunal nematodes and harpacticoid copepods were present only in recently settled shrimp from 8 to 12 mm total length on muddy bottoms. Larger shrimp collectively consumed up to 33 different macrobenthic prey types. Shrimp were fullest at night (mean gut contents weight = 8% wet body weight, Lynher) or at dawn (6%, Ythan). The Lynher Carcinus gut contents—from animals 8 to 30 mm carapace width, examined visually only—contained mostly fluids, green benthic algae, sediment particles, and masses of unidentifiable prey remains plus digestion-resistant hard parts visually identifiable as macrobenthic in origin. None of the 203 crabs examined from the 24-h collection contained meiofaunal prey. Crangon shrimp probably eat meiofaunal prey for only a brief period of time after their initial settlement to the bottom. Evidence for significant top-down impacts on meiofauna from these two abundant shallow-water predators was weak. More trophic studies are needed on newly settled epibenthic predators to test the hypothesis that biological control of shallow-water meiofauna is important.  相似文献

Cleaner organisms exhibit a remarkable natural behaviour where they consume ectoparasites attached to “client” organisms. While this behaviour can be utilized as a natural method of parasitic disease control (or biocontrol), it is not known whether cleaner organisms can also limit reinfection from parasite eggs and larvae within the environment. Here we show that cleaner shrimp, Lysmata amboinensis, consume eggs and larvae of a harmful monogenean parasite, Neobenedenia sp., in aquaculture. Shrimp consumed parasite eggs under diurnal (63%) and nocturnal (14%) conditions as well as infectious larvae (oncomiracidia) diurnally (26%). Furthermore, we trialled the inclusion of cleaner shrimp for preventative parasite management of ornamental fish, Pseudanthias squamipinnis, and found shrimp reduced oncomiracidia infection success of host fish by half compared to controls (held without shrimp). Fish held without cleaner shrimp exhibited pigmentation changes as a result of infection, possibly indicative of a stress response. These results provide the first empirical evidence that cleaner organisms reduce parasite loads in the environment through non-symbiotic cleaning activities. Our research findings have relevance to aquaculture and the marine ornamental trade, where cleaner shrimp could be applied for prophylaxis and control of ectoparasite infections.  相似文献

Globally, introductions of alien species are increasingly common, with invasive predators potentially having detrimental effects via predation on native species. However, native prey may avoid predation by adopting new behaviors. To determine whether invasive fish populations consume endemic shrimp in invaded Hawaiian anchialine habitats or if adopted patterns of diel migration prevents predation as previously hypothesized, a total of 183 invasive poeciliids (158 Gambusia affinis and 25 Poecilia reticulata) were collected for gut content analyses from four anchialine sites during wet and dry seasons on the islands of Hawai‘i and Maui. Predation on shrimp was not detected in habitats where they retreat exclusively into the underlying aquifer diurnally and only emerge nocturnally. However, low levels of predation were detected (7/65 fishes, only by Gambusia affinis) at Waianapanapa Cave, Maui, where shrimp retreat into both the aquifer and a cave during the day. Thus, adopted behavioral responses to invasive fishes generally, though not universally, prevent predation on endemic Hawaiian anchialine shrimps. However, non-consumptive effects resulting from behavioral modification of shrimps may have appreciable impacts on the Hawaiian anchialine ecosystem and warrant further study.  相似文献

Lactobacillus strains have been considered good candidates as biological control agents for prevention or treatment of plant and animal infections. One L. plantarum strain FB003 and three strains (FB011, FB081, and FB110) which closed to L. sakei were isolated from fermented and salted shrimp and their abilities in inhibiting growth of Vibrio parahaemolyticus were characterized. These strains were selected as potential probiotics based on their oro-gastro-intestinal resistance, gut colonization, adhesion to Caco-2 cells, antimicrobial activities, antibiotic resistance, and safety aspects. Results of this study revealed that these isolates possessed high aggregation activities against pathogens in host intestines. Strain FB011 strain showed higher coaggregation and immunomodulatory activity in the gastro-intestinal tract than L. plantarum. These difference effects of Lactobacillus strains provide valuable information about using them to prevent Vibrio infections in the aquaculture industry.  相似文献

Hemipteran pests including aphids are not particularly susceptible to the effects of insecticidal Cry toxins derived from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis. We examined the physiological basis for the relatively low toxicity of Cry1Ac and Cry3Aa against the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris). Cry1Ac was efficiently hydrolyzed by aphid stomach membrane associated cysteine proteases (CP) producing a 60 kDa mature toxin, whereas Cry3Aa was incompletely processed and partially degraded. Cry1Ac bound to the aphid gut epithelium but showed low aphid toxicity in bioassays. Feeding of aphids on Cry1Ac in the presence or absence of GalNAc, suggested that Cry1Ac gut binding was glycan mediated. In vitro binding of biotinylated-Cry1Ac to gut BBMVs and competition assays using unlabeled Cry1Ac and GalNAc confirmed binding specificity as well as glycan mediation of Cry1Ac binding. Although Cry3Aa binding to the aphid gut membrane was not detected, Cry3Aa bound 25 and 37 kDa proteins in aphid gut BBMV in ligand blot analysis and competition assays confirmed the binding specificity of Cry3Aa. This, combined with low toxicity in feeding assays, suggests that Cry3Aa does bind the gut epithelium to some extent. This is the first systematic examination of the physiological basis for the low efficacy of Cry toxins against aphids, and analysis of Cry toxin-aphid gut interaction.  相似文献

Effects of Bacillus subtilis E20 isolated from fermented soybean on immune parameters and the disease resistance of the white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) after 98 days of B. subtilis E20 feeding were evaluated in this study. Shrimp fed B. subtilis E20-containing diets at concentrations of 106 (E206), 107 (E207), and 108 (E208) cfu kg?1, respectively, had significantly increased survival rates of 13.3%, 16.7%, and 20%, compared to the control (fed no probiotic) after being challenged with Vibrio alginolyticus. There were no significant differences in the total hemocyte count, respiratory burst, or superoxide dismutase glutathione peroxidase among all treatments. Shrimp fed a higher concentration of the probiotic (E208) exhibited significant increases in phenoloxidase activity, phagocytic activity, and clearance efficiency compared to control shrimp. In addition, B. subtilis E20 showed a weaker inhibitory effect against the growth of Aeromona hydrophila with around a 0.3-cm inhibitory zone, but showed no inhibitory effects against other selected pathogens, such as white shrimp pathogens: V. alginolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus. These results suggest that the increased resistance of shrimp after B. subtilis E20 consumption occurs through immune modifications, such as increases in phenoloxidase activity, phagocytic activity, and clearance efficiency against V. alginolyticus.  相似文献

The effects of zingerone supplementation on the growth, immunity, and disease resistance of Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) juveniles were studied. Four experimental diets, including a control diet (without zingerone enrichment) and 1, 2.5, and 5 mg zingerone (kg diet)−1 were used. After 56 days of culture, shrimp fed diets supplemented with 1, 2.5, and 5 mg zingerone (kg diet)−1 had significantly greater weight gain and feed efficiency than the controls. Furthermore, after 56 days of culture, shrimp fed all doses of the zingerone diet had higher survival rates compared to the controls after 24-72 h of challenge by the pathogen, Vibrio alginolyticus. Significantly increased phenoloxidase levels were found in shrimp fed the zingerone diets at all doses, and respiratory bursts, lysozyme and phagocytic activities of shrimp fed 2.5 and 5 mg zingerone (kg diet)−1 also significantly increased. Neither the total hemocyte count nor superoxide dismutase activity of the experimental and control groups revealed significant differences at any dose. The results indicate that zingerone can be recommended as a supplement to shrimp feed to increase growth, immunity, and disease resistance against the pathogen, V. alginolyticus. Use of zingerone as appetizer and immunostimulant in shrimp is promising.  相似文献
