The cross-sectional properties of mammalian limb bones provide an important source of information about their loading history and locomotor adaptations. It has been suggested, for instance, that the cross-sectional strength of primate limb bones differs from that of other mammals as a consequence of living in a complex arboreal environment (Kimura, 1991, 1995). In order to test this hypothesis more rigorously, we have investigated cross-sectional properties in samples of humeri and femora of 71 primate species, 30 carnivorans and 59 rodents. Primates differ from carnivorans and rodents in having limb bones with greater cross-sectional strength than mammals of similar mass. This might imply that primates have stronger bones than carnivorans and rodents. However, primates also have longer proximal limb bones than other mammals. When cross-sectional dimensions are regressed against bone length, primates appear to have more gracile bones than other mammals. These two seemingly contradictory findings can be reconciled by recognizing that most limb bones experience bending as a predominant loading regime. After regressing cross-sectional strength against the product of body mass and bone length, a product which should be proportional to the bending moments applied to the limb, primates are found to overlap considerably with carnivorans and rodents. Consequently, primate humeri and femora are similar to those of nonprimates in their resistance to bending. Comparisons between arboreal and terrestrial species within the orders show that the bones of arboreal carnivorans have greater cross-sectional properties than those of terrestrial carnivorans, thus supporting Kimura's general notion. However, no differences were found between arboreal and terrestrial rodents. Among primates, the only significant difference was in humeral bending rigidity, which is higher in the terrestrial species. In summary, arboreal and terrestrial species do not show consistent differences in long bone reinforcement, and Kimura's conclusions must be modified to take into account the interaction of bone length and cross-sectional geometry.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to describe the curvature of anthropoid limb bones quantitatively, to determine how limb bone curvature scales with body mass, and to discuss how bone curvature influences static measures of bone strength. Femora and humeri in six anthropoid genera of Old World monkeys, New World monkeys, and gibbons were used. Bone length, curvature, and cross-sectional properties were incorporated into the analysis. These variables were obtained by a new method using three-dimensional morphological data reconstructed from consecutive CT images. This method revealed the patterns of curvature of anthropoid limb bones. Log-transformed scaling analyses of the characters revealed that bone length and especially bone curvature strongly reflected taxonomic/locomotor differences. As compared with Old World monkeys, New World monkeys and gibbons in particular have a proportionally long and less curved femur and humerus relative to body mass. It is also revealed that the section modulus relative to body mass varies less between taxonomic/locomotor groups in anthropoids. Calculation of theoretical bending strengths implied that Old World monkeys achieve near-constant bending strength in accordance with the tendency observed in general terrestrial mammals. Relatively shorter bone length and larger A-P curvature of Old World monkeys largely contribute to this uniformity. Bending strengths in New World monkeys and gibbons were, however, a little lower under lateral loading and extremely stronger and more variable under axial loading as compared with Old World monkeys, due to their relative elongated and weakly curved femora and humeri. These results suggest that arboreal locomotion, including quadrupedalism and suspension, requires functional demands quite dissimilar to those required in terrestrial quadrupedalism.  相似文献

Body weight and length, chest girth, and seven postcranial limb segment lengths are compared between two guenon species, Chlorocebus (Cercopithecus) aethiops (vervets) and Cercopithecus mitis (blue monkeys), exhibiting different habitual locomotor preferences. The subjects, all adults, were wild caught for a non-related research project (Turner et al. [1986] Genetic and morphological studies on two species of Kenyan monkeys, C. aethiops and C. mitis. In: Else JG, Lee PC, editors. Primate evolution, proceedings of the Xth International Congress of Primatology, Cambridge. London). The morphological results are interpreted within the context of previously published observations of primate locomotion and social organization. The sample is unique in that the body weight of each individual is known, allowing the effects of body-size scaling to be assessed in interspecific and intersexual comparisons. C. mitis has a significantly (P < 0.05) greater body weight and trunk length than C. aethiops. A shorter trunk may function to reduce spinal flexibility for ground-running in the latter. Proximal limb segments (arm and thigh) are significantly greater in C. mitis, reflecting known adaptations to committed arboreal quadrupedal locomotion. By contrast, relative distal limb segments (forearm, crus, and foot) are significantly longer in C. aethiops, concordant with a locomotor repertoire that includes substantial terrestrial quadrupedalism, in addition to arboreal agility, and also the requisite transition between ground and canopy. Although normally associated with arboreal monkeys, greater relative tail length occurs in the more terrestrial vervets. However, because vervets exploit both arboreal and terrestrial habitats, a longer tail may compensate for diminished balance during arboreal quadrupedalism resulting from the greater "brachial" and "crural" indices that enhance their ground quadrupedalism. Most interspecific differences in body proportions are explicable by differences in locomotor modalities. Some results, however, contradict commonly held "tenets" that relate body size and morphology exclusively to locomotion. Generally associated with terrestriality, sexual dimorphism (male/female) is greater in the more arboreal blue monkeys. A more intense, seasonal mating competition may account for this incongruity.  相似文献

In several groups of mammals, adaptation to differing functional demands is reflected in long bone cross-sectional properties (CSP), which relate to the resistance to compression and to bending loads in the craniocaudal and mediolateral directions. Members of the Sciuromorpha (“squirrel-like” rodents) display a diversity of locomotor ecologies and span three orders of magnitude in terms of body size. The availability of robust phylogenies is rendering them a suitable group to further substantiate the relationship of long bone CSP with locomotor ecology and body mass while taking the phylogenetic non-independence among species into account. Here, we studied 69 species of Sciuromorpha belonging to three lifestyle categories, “arboreal,” “fossorial,” and “aerial” (i.e., gliding). We hypothesized locomotor category specific loading regimes that act on femora during predominant or, in terms of gliding, critical locomotor behaviors of each category. High resolution computed tomography scans of the specimens' femora were obtained and cross-sections in 5% increments were analyzed. Cross-sectional area, the craniocaudal second moment of area (SMAcc), and the mediolateral second moment of area were quantified. Further, a scaling analysis was conducted for each bone cross-section to examine how the CSP scale with body mass. Body mass accounted for variances in CSP with mainly positive allometry. The aerial sciuromorphs showed lower values of CSP compared to the arboreal and fossorial species in the distal epiphysis for all quantified parameters and along the bone for SMAcc. In contrast to previous studies on other mammalian lineages, no differences in CSP were found between the fossorial and the arboreal lifestyles.  相似文献

Investigations of cross-sectional geometry in nonhuman primate limb bones typically attribute shape ratios to qualitative behavioral characterizations, e.g., leaper, slow climber, brachiator, or terrestrial vs. arboreal quadruped. Quantitative positional behavioral data, however, have yet to be used in a rigorous evaluation of such shape-behavior connections. African apes represent an ideal population for such an investigation because their relatedness minimizes phylogenetic inertia, they exhibit diverse behavioral repertoires, and their locomotor behaviors are known from multiple studies. Cross-sectional data from femoral and humeral diaphyses were collected for 222 wild-shot specimens, encompassing Pan paniscus and all commonly recognized African ape subspecies. Digital representations of diaphyseal cross sections were acquired via computed tomography at three locations per diaphysis. Locomotor behaviors were pooled broadly into arboreal and terrestrial categories, then partitioned into quadrupedal walking, quadrumanous climbing, scrambling, and suspensory categories. Sex-specific taxonomic differences in ratios of principal moments of area (PMA) were statistically significant more often in the femoral diaphysis than the humeral diaphysis. While it appears difficult to relate a measure of shape (e.g., PMA ratio) to individual locomotor modes, general locomotor differences (e.g., percentage arboreal vs. terrestrial locomotion) are discerned more easily. As percentage of arboreal locomotion for a group increases, average cross sections appear more circular. Associations between PMA ratio and specific locomotor behaviors are less straightforward. Individual behaviors that integrate eccentric limb positions (e.g., arboreal scrambling) may not engender more circular cross sections than behaviors that incorporate repetitive sagittal movements (e.g., quadrupedal walking) in a straightforward manner.  相似文献

The forelimb joints of terrestrial primate quadrupeds appear better able to resist mediolateral (ML) shear forces than those of arboreal quadrupedal monkeys. These differences in forelimb morphology have been used extensively to infer locomotor behavior in extinct primate quadrupeds. However, the nature of ML substrate reaction forces (SRF) during arboreal and terrestrial quadrupedalism in primates is not known. This study documents ML-SRF magnitude and orientation and forelimb joint angles in six quadrupedal anthropoid species walking across a force platform attached to terrestrial (wooden runway) and arboreal supports (raised horizontal poles). On the ground all subjects applied a lateral force in more than 50% of the steps collected. On horizontal poles, in contrast, all subjects applied a medially directed force to the substrate in more than 75% of the steps collected. In addition, all subjects on arboreal supports combined a lower magnitude peak ML-SRF with a change in the timing of the ML-SRF peak force. As a result, during quadrupedalism on the poles the overall SRF resultant was relatively lower than it was on the runway. Most subjects in this study adduct their humerus while on the poles. The kinetic and kinematic variables combine to minimize the tendency to collapse or translate forelimbs joints in an ML plane in primarily arboreal quadrupedal primates compared to primarily terrestrial quadrupedal ones. These data allow for a more complete understanding of the anatomy of the forelimb in terrestrial vs. arboreal quadrupedal primates. A better understanding of the mechanical basis of morphological differences allows greater confidence in inferences concerning the locomotion of extinct primate quadrupeds.  相似文献

Extant hominoids share similar elbow joint morphology, which is believed to be an adaptation for elbow stability through a wide range of pronation-supination and flexion-extension postures. Mild variations in elbow joint morphology reported among extant hominoids are often qualitative, where orangutans are described as having keeled joints, and humans and gorillas as having flatter joints. Although these differences in keeling are often linked to variation in upper limb use or loading, they have not been specifically quantified. Many of the muscles important in arboreal locomotion in hominoids (i.e., wrist and finger flexors and extensors) take their origins from the humeral epicondyles. Contractions of these muscles generate transverse forces across the elbow, which are resisted mainly by the keel of the humeroulnar joint. Therefore, species with well-developed forearm musculature, like arboreal hominoids, should have more elbow joint keeling than nonarboreal species. This paper explores the three- and two-dimensional morphology of the trochlear notch of the elbow of extant hominoids and fossil hominins and hominoids for which the locomotor habitus is still debated. As expected, the elbow articulation of habitually arboreal extant apes is more keeled than that of humans. In addition, extant knuckle-walkers are characterized by joints that are distally expanded in order to provide greater articular surface area perpendicular to the large loads incurred during terrestrial locomotion with an extended forearm. Oreopithecus is characterized by a pronounced keel of the trochlear notch and resembles Pongo and Pan. OH 36 has a morphology that is unlike that of extant species or other fossil hominins. All other hominin fossils included in this study have trochlear notches intermediate in form between Homo and Gorilla or Pan, suggesting a muscularity that is less than in African apes but greater than in humans.  相似文献

High-speed, biplanar X-ray motion analysis, X-ray reconstruction of moving morphology (XROMM) and morphological studies have led to the identification of those traits which are considered to be crucial for the evolution of arboreal locomotion in chameleons. The loss of the extensive lateral undulation typical of reptiles needs to be compensated by high mobility in the shoulder girdle and a clear functional regionalization of the trunk. Large limb excursion angles provide a compliant gait and are made possible by a functional parasagittalization of fore- and hind limbs, at least temporarily. All these evolutionary novelties parallel very similar modifications in the evolution of the locomotor apparatus in therian mammals. We propose that the convergent “invention” of dynamic stability and a compliant gait seem to be responsible for the locomotor similarities between chameleons and mammals.  相似文献

Previous studies of the morphology of the humerus in kangaroos showed that the shape of the proximal humerus could distinguish between arboreal and terrestrial taxa among living mammals, and that the extinct “giant” kangaroos (members of the extinct subfamily Sthenurinae and the extinct macropodine genus Protemnodon) had divergent humeral anatomies from extant kangaroos. Here, we use 2D geometric morphometrics to capture the shape of the distal humerus in a range of extant and extinct marsupials and obtain similar results: sthenurines have humeral morphologies more similar to arboreal mammals, while large Protemnodon species (P. brehus and P. anak) have humeral morphologies more similar to terrestrial quadrupedal mammals. Our results provide further evidence for prior hypotheses: that sthenurines did not employ a locomotor mode that involved loading the forelimbs (likely employing bipedal striding as an alternative to quadrupedal or pentapedal locomotion at slow gaits), and that large Protemnodon species were more reliant on quadrupedal locomotion than their extant relatives. This greater diversity of locomotor modes among large Pleistocene kangaroos echoes studies that show a greater diversity in other aspects of ecology, such as diet and habitat occupancy.

Small animals must be capable of moving on a wide variety of surfaces; thus, examining the mechanics of locomotion on a wide variety of substrates is necessary to understand how the animal can utilize its habitat. Therefore, locomotor kinetics are examined on arboreal and terrestrial sloped substrates in the marsupial Monodelphis domestica (gray short-tailed opossum). Substrate reaction forces were measured as opossums moved across four trackways: 30 degrees upslope and 30 degrees downslope trackways, which were flat ("terrestrial") or cylindrical ("arboreal"). Regardless of substrate slope, medial limb forces were measured on arboreal trackways and usually lateral limb forces on terrestrial trackways. Otherwise the general patterns of vertical and craniocaudal forces and impulses were similar between same-sloped terrestrial and arboreal trackways. Some significant modifications to these gross patterns occurred: on the arboreal upslope trackway, hindlimbs supported more body weight than on the terrestrial uphill, possibly because hindlimbs were more stably positioned on the upslope arboreal trackway than forelimbs. Furthermore, the difference between fore- and hindlimbs with respect to craniocaudal impulses was less on the arboreal sloped trackways. In conclusion, kinetic patterns can usually be explained by body weight support roles and by the placement of the limbs on the arboreal trackway.  相似文献

In living primates, except the great apes and humans, the foot is placed in a heel-elevated or semi-plantigrade position when these animals move upon arboreal or terrestrial substrates. Heel placement and bone positions in the non-great ape primate foot are designed to increase mobility and flexibility in the arboreal environment. Orangutans have further enhanced foot mobility by adapting their feet for suspension and thus similarly utilize foot positions where the heel does not touch the substrate. Chimpanzees and gorillas represent an alternative pattern (plantigrady), in which the heel contacts the surface of the support at the end of swing phase, especially during terrestrial locomotion. Thus, chimpanzees and gorillas possess feet adapted for both arboreal and terrestrial substrates. African apes also share several osteological features related to plantigrady and terrestrial locomotion with early hominids. From this analysis, it is apparent that hominid locomotor evolution passed through a quadrupedal terrestrial phase.  相似文献

Primate appendicular limb bones were measured on the cross-sectional geometry at the mid-length of the humerus and femur and on the external dimensions of long bones of the same individuals. Cross sections were directly measured by means of computer tomography or direct sectioning. The morphometry of bones and locomotor behaviour is discussed from the viewpoint of the functional differentiation between the fore- and hindlimbs. The primate group which daily adopted a relatively terrestrial locomotor type demonstrates robust forelimb bones compared with the group which adopted a fully arboreal locomotor type. In contrast, the arboreal group showed relatively large and long hindlimb bones. The difference resembled the previously reported comparison between terrestrial and arboreal groups among wholly quadrupedal mammals. Humans were more similar to the arboreal group than to the terrestrial group. Parameters of the cross-sectional geometry showed a slightly positive allometry in total primate species. Slopes of the parameters were explained by the influence of muscle force.  相似文献

Devonian stem tetrapods are thought to have used ‘crutching’ on land, a belly-dragging form of synchronous forelimb action-powered locomotion. During the Early Carboniferous, early tetrapods underwent rapid radiation, and the terrestrial locomotion of crown-group node tetrapods is believed to have been hindlimb-powered and ‘raised’, involving symmetrical gaits similar to those used by modern salamanders. The fossil record over this period of evolutionary transition is remarkably poor (Romer’s Gap), but we hypothesize a phase of belly-dragging sprawling locomotion combined with symmetrical gaits. Since belly-dragging sprawling locomotion has differing functional demands from ‘raised’ sprawling locomotion, we studied the limb mechanics of the extant belly-dragging blue-tongued skink. We used X-ray reconstruction of moving morphology to quantify the three-dimensional kinematic components, and simultaneously recorded single limb substrate reaction forces (SRF) in order to calculate SRF moment arms and the external moments acting on the proximal limb joints. In the hindlimbs, stylopodal long-axis rotation is more emphasized than in the forelimbs, and much greater vertical and propulsive forces are exerted. The SRF moment arm acting on the shoulder is at a local minimum at the instant of peak force. The hindlimbs display patterns that more closely resemble ‘raised’ sprawling species. External moment at the shoulder of the skink is smaller than in ‘raised’ sprawlers. We propose an evolutionary scenario in which the locomotor mechanics of belly-dragging early tetrapods were gradually modified towards hindlimb-powered, raised terrestrial locomotion with symmetrical gait. In accordance with the view that limb evolution was an exaptation for terrestrial locomotion, the kinematic pattern of the limbs for the generation of propulsion preceded, in our scenario, the evolution of permanent body weight support.  相似文献

Several terrestrial vertebrate clades include lineages that have evolved nearly exclusive use of aquatic habitats. In many cases, such transitions are associated with the evolution of flattened limbs that are used to swim via dorsoventral flapping. Such changes in shape may have been facilitated by changes in limb bone loading in novel aquatic environments. Studies on limb bone loading in turtles found that torsion is high relative to bending loads on land, but reduced compared to bending during aquatic rowing. Release from torsion among rowers could have facilitated the evolution of hydrodynamically advantageous flattened limbs among aquatic species. Because rowing is regarded as an intermediate locomotor stage between walking and flapping, rowing species might show limb bone flattening intermediate between the tubular shapes of walkers and the flattened shapes of flappers. We collected measurements of humeri and femora from specimens representing four functionally divergent turtle clades: sea turtles (marine flappers), softshells (specialized freshwater rowers), emydids (generalist semiaquatic rowers), and tortoises (terrestrial walkers). Patterns of limb bone scaling with size were compared across lineages using phylogenetic comparative methods. Although rowing taxa did not show the intermediate scaling patterns we predicted, our data provide other functional insights. For example, flattening of sea turtle humeri was associated with positive allometry (relative to body mass) for the limb bone diameter perpendicular to the flexion-extension plane of the elbow. Moreover, softshell limb bones exhibit positive allometry of femoral diameters relative to body mass, potentially helping them maintain their typical benthic position in water by providing additional weight to compensate for shell reduction. Tortoise limb bones showed positive allometry of diameters, as well as long humeri, relative to body mass, potentially reflecting specializations for resisting loads associated with digging. Overall, scaling patterns of many turtle lineages appear to correlate with distinctive behaviors or locomotor habits.  相似文献

Postcranial limb bones were compared among primates of different locomotor types. Seventy-one primate species, in which all families of primates were included, were grouped into nine locomotor types. Osteometrical data on long bones and data on the cross-sectional geometry of the humerus and the femur were studied by means of allometric analysis and principal component analysis. Relatively robust forelimb bones were observed in the primate group which adopted the relatively terrestrial locomotor type compared with the group that adopted the arboreal locomotor type. The difference resembled the previously reported comparison between terrestrial and arboreal groups among all quadrupedal mammals. The degree of arboreality in daily life is connected with the degree of hindlimb dominance, or the ratio of force applied to the fore- and hindlimb in positional behaviour and also with the shape, size and robusticity of limb bones.  相似文献

Gibbons are highly arboreal apes, and it is expected that their bipedal locomotion will show some particularities related to the arboreal environment. Previous research has shown that, during hylobatid bipedalism, unsupported phases are rare and stride frequencies are relatively low. This study confirms previous findings, and we suggest that low stride frequencies and the absence of unsupported phases are ways to reduce disadvantageous branch oscillations during arboreal travel. Despite these restrictions, gibbons are able to locomote at a wide range of speeds, implying that they likely exploit other mechanisms to modulate their locomotor speed. To investigate this possibility, we collected video images of a large number of spontaneous bipedal bouts of four untrained white-handed gibbons by using an instrumented walkway with four synchronized cameras. These video images were digitized to obtain a quantification of the 3D kinematics of hylobatid bipedalism. We defined a large number of spatiotemporal and kinematic gait variables, and the relationship between these gait variables and (dimensionless) speed was statistically tested. It was found that gibbons mainly increase stride length to increase their locomotor speed; the main speed-modulating mechanisms are hip and ankle excursion and coupled knee and ankle extension at toe-off. Although aerial phases are rare, gibbons generally adopt a bipedal bouncing gait at most speeds and a clear-cut gait transition, as seen in human locomotion, is absent. Comparison with human and bonobo bipedalism showed that the variability of the 3D joint angles of the hind limb are comparable during human and gibbon bipedalism, and much lower than during bonobo bipedalism. The low variability found in gibbons might be related to constraints imposed by the arboreal environment. These arboreal constraints clearly affect the bipedal gait characteristics of gibbons, but do not constrain the ability to adopt a bipedal bouncing gait during terrestrial locomotion.  相似文献

Behavioral studies indicate that adult mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei) are the most terrestrial of all nonhuman hominoids, but that infant mountain gorillas are much more arboreal. Here we examine ontogenetic changes in diaphyseal strength and length of the femur, tibia, humerus, radius, and ulna in 30 Virunga mountain gorillas, including 18 immature specimens and 12 adults. Comparisons are also made with 14 adult western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla), which are known to be more arboreal than adult mountain gorillas. Infant mountain gorillas have significantly stronger forelimbs relative to hind limbs than older juveniles and adults, but are nonsignificantly different from western lowland gorilla adults. The change in inter-limb strength proportions is abrupt at about two years of age, corresponding to the documented transition to committed terrestrial quadrupedalism in mountain gorillas. The one exception is the ulna, which shows a gradual increase in strength relative to the radius and other long bones during development, possibly corresponding to the gradual adoption of stereotypical fully pronated knuckle-walking in older juvenile gorillas. Inter-limb bone length proportions show a contrasting developmental pattern, with hind limb/forelimb length declining rapidly from birth to five months of age, and then showing no consistent change through adulthood. The very early change in length proportions, prior to significant independent locomotion, may be related to the need for relatively long forelimbs for climbing in a large-bodied hominoid. Virunga mountain gorilla older juveniles and adults have equal or longer forelimb relative to hind limb bones than western lowland adults. These findings indicate that both ontogenetically and among closely related species of Gorilla, long bone strength proportions better reflect actual locomotor behavior than bone length proportions.  相似文献

The present study was designed to investigate how the form of the marsupial thoracolumbar vertebrae varies to cope with the particular demands of diverse loading and locomotor behaviors. The vertebral columns of 10 species of Macropodidae, with various body masses and modes of locomotion, together with two other arboreal marsupials, koala and cuscus, were selected. Seventy-four three-dimensional landmark coordinates were acquired on each of the 10 last presacral vertebrae of the 70 vertebral columns. The interspecific variations of the third lumbar vertebra (L3, which approximates the mean) and the transitional patterns of the thoracolumbar segments were examined using the combined approach of generalized Procrustes analysis (GPA) and principal components analysis (PCA). The results of analyses of an individual vertebra (L3) and of the transitional patterns indicate significant interspecific differences. In the L3 study the first PC shows allometric shape variation, while the second PC seems to relate to adaptation for terrestrial versus arboreal locomotion. When the L3 vertebrae of the common spotted cuscus and koala are included for comparison, the vertebra of the tree kangaroo occupies an intermediate position between the hopping kangaroo and these arboreal marsupials. The L3 vertebrae in the arboreal marsupials possess a distinct dorsoventrally expanded vertebral body, and perpendicularly orientated spinous and transverse processes. The results of the present study suggest that vertebral shape in the kangaroo and wallaroos provides a structural adaptation to hopping through a relatively enlarged loading area and powerful lever system. In contrast, the small-sized bettongs (or rat kangaroos) have a relatively flexible column and elongated levers for the action of back muscles that extend and laterally flex the spine. The complex pattern of vertebral shape transition in the last 10 presacral vertebrae was examined using PCAs that compare between species information about vertebral shape variation along the thoracolumbar column. The results reinforce and emphasize important aspects of the patterns of variation seen in the detailed analysis of the third lumbar vertebra. The results also imply that size, spinal loading pattern, and locomotor behavior exert an influence on shaping the vertebra. Further, the morphological adaptations are consistent within these marsupials and this opens up the possibility that this kind of analysis may be useful in making functional inferences from fossil material.  相似文献

Animals that live and travel in trees display a variety of morphological and behavioral adaptations to help them maintain balance on narrow flexible supports. Among these adaptations are long tails that can be used as counterweights, and freely mobile limbs in order to reach discontinuous supports. Here we describe two additional ways in which these features can contribute to balance during arboreal locomotion. Electromyographic (EMG) recordings of the forearm rotators pronator quadratus and supinator during over-ground and above-branch quadrupedal locomotion in five species of Old World monkeys revealed their contribution to shifting the weight of the body to help change the direction of travel and maintain balance on a branch. In addition, we observed a coordinated mechanism consisting of a sweeping tail rotation toward the direction of imbalance, to impart an angular momentum to the body that assists in the restoration of balance. While all five primate species utilized forearm rotators to shift their bodies toward one side or the other during quadrupedal walking along a branch, the tail-whip mechanism was most frequently used by the largest and most terrestrial species. We suggest that their large size and/or terrestrial habits have made them less adept at arboreal locomotion, and therefore most likely to utilize auxiliary balancing mechanisms. The usefulness of a long tail as a balancing aid during arboreal locomotion highlights the puzzling nature of the evolutionary loss of a tail in the ape and human lineage.  相似文献

Long‐bone scaling has been analyzed in a large number of terrestrial mammals for which body masses were known. Earlier proposals that geometric or elastic similarity are suitable as explanations for long‐bone scaling across a large size range are not supported. Differential scaling is present, and large mammals on average scale with lower regression slopes than small mammals. Large mammals tend to reduce bending stress during locomotion by having shorter limb bones than predicted rather than by having very thick diaphyses, as is usually assumed. The choice of regression model used to describe data samples in analyses of scaling becomes increasingly important as correlation coefficients decrease, and theoretical models supported by one analysis may not be supported when applying another statistical model to the same data. Differences in limb posture and locomotor performance have profound influence on the amount of stress set up in the appendicular bones during rigorous physical activity and make it unlikely that scaling of long bones across a large size range of terrestrial mammals can be satisfactorily explained by any one power function.
