Abstract:  Use of the predatory mite Neoseiulus cucumeris (Oudemans) (Acari, Phytoseiidae) and a fleece cover in combination with pyrethrum application showed potential for control of two important pests in organic production of strawberry ( Fragaria  ×  ananassa Duch.), although there were some unexpected interactions between pyrethrum and the release of N. cucumeris that need to be investigated further. Two cultivars, Honeoye and Cavendish, were treated with pyrethrum with or without fleece to control strawberry blossom weevils [ Anthonomus rubi Herbst. (Col., Curculionidae)] and N. cucumeris was released to control strawberry mites [ Phytonemus pallidus (Banks) (Acari, Tarsonemidae)]. Number of strawberry mites, number of flower buds damaged by the weevil, incidence of grey mould and powdery mildew, and fruit yield were measured in two consecutive fruiting seasons. In Honeoye, the fleece in combination with pyrethrum decreased the proportion of damaged buds by 11–23% and increased yield by 49–91 g per plant. When pyrethrum was used alone it did not influence the number of damaged buds or yield. This indicates that the combined treatment was more effective because of the fleece. In Cavendish, the fleece and pyrethrum treatments were not found to be effective. Almost no P. pallidus was found in Honeoye and the results were not analysable. In plots with Cavendish where N. cucumeris had been released, there were approximately 50% fewer P. pallidus from the end of August onwards in 2003. However, this response did not significantly influence the succeeding year's yield. The number of fruits infected with fungi was very low and no effects were observed for any of the treatments.  相似文献

S ummary . When sheep were held in abattoir pens, the fleece became contaminated with salmonellae within 1 day even when there was less than 1 salmonella/g of soil. Salmonellae were first shed in the faeces after 2–3 days. Both the percentage of infected sheep and the number of salmonellae/g of faeces subsequently increased rapidly. Contamination of fleece and carcasses increased with time and with the degree to which the pens were contaminated. The fleece appeared to be a significant source of salmonella contamination of the carcass.  相似文献

We aimed to quantify if and to what extent permanent incisor wear affected mohair production in adult Angora castrate goats. The goats were grazed on annual temperate pastures for 6 years. During their sixth year mohair was harvested every 6 months and liveweight measured. Incisors were inspected at age 6 years and the amount and pattern of wear quantified. Restricted maximum likelihood (REML) base models were developed to account for background sources of variation. Once a base model had been selected for each fleece attribute, an extra term for the linear effect of the first and other permanent incisor wear were added to the model. During the year mean liveweight, greasy mohair production, clean mohair production and mean fibre diameter were (S.D.): 55.6 (5.85) kg, 4.97 (1.00) kg, 4.16 (0.87) kg, 34.8 (4.02) μm. Mean wear on permanent first incisors was 9% (range 0–30%). There was little wear on other permanent incisors. Greasy fleece weight, clean fleece weight, staple length and fleece entanglement were reduced significantly with increased wear of first permanent incisors. There were no significant effects of incisor wear detected for nine other fleece attributes or liveweight. The results indicate that 30% wear of the permanent first incisors reduced greasy fleece production by 20% and reduced clean fleece production by 30%. Given the magnitude of the effects detected it is clear that relatively small amounts of wear of permanent incisors in adult Angora goats reduce production of mohair and consequently will reduce financial returns from mohair sales. The clear implication is that managers of mohair producing enterprises should assess the incisors of adult Angora goats and use this information in determining which animals to cull from their flocks.  相似文献

The possibility of transmission of slow virus infection (HIV) and Creutzfeld-Jakob disease by cadaveric dura implants makes it necessary to find synthetic, absorbable materials for the reconstruction of the dura mater. Various procedures with autologous or alloplastic material are described. Four commercially available biomaterials were choosen to study the proliferation rate and the biocompatibility of human osteoblast-like cells (HOB-like cells) on 2- dimensional material by biochemical analysis. With a proliferation assay, the viability and the proliferation capacity of osteoblast-like cells were evaluated. A clinical trial was added to study resorbable fleece as one of the previously tested biomaterial in a small patient group (8 patients) to close anterior cranial fossa dura defects. The results of the proliferation assay showed the highest proliferation rate of HOB-like cells on resorbable fleece. All patients in our clinical trial with anterior cranial fossa dura defects were successfully treated with resorbable fleece. There was no evidence for persisting cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea or foreign body reaction after the period of wound healing. The present study demonstrated an excellent biocompatibility of resorbable fleece. The vicryl fleece is an alternative alloplastic material for endonasal closure of defined substantial defects of the dura with cerebrospinal fluid.  相似文献

Ten antiseptic formulations, an unmedicated liquid soap, and tap water alone were compared for their capacities to eliminate human rotavirus from the finger pads of adult volunteers; three of the antiseptics, the soap, and the tap water alone were also tested against Escherichia coli. A fecal suspension of virus or bacterium was placed on each finger pad and air dried. The contaminated site was exposed to the test product for 10 s, rinsed in tap water, and dried on a paper towel. The residual virus or bacterium was then eluted. Selected agents were also tested by an analogous whole-hand method by which the entire palm surfaces of both hands were contaminated. Alcohols (70%) alone or with Savlon reduced the virus titer by greater than 99%, whereas the reductions by Proviodine, Dettol, and Hibisol ranged from 95 to 97%. Aqueous solutions of chlorhexidine gluconate were significantly less effective for virus removal or inactivation than 70% alcohol solutions. Furthermore, Savlon in water (1:200) was found to be much less effective in eliminating the virus (80.6%) than the bacterium (98.9%). The tap water alone and the soap reduced the virus titers by 83.6 and 72.5% and the bacterial titers by 90 and 68.7%, respectively. The results of the whole-hand method agreed well with those of the finger pad protocol. We conclude that the finger pad method is a suitable model for testing the in vivo efficacy of hand-washing agents and emphasize the need for using appropriate test viruses and bacteria.  相似文献

The three-dimensional organization of the eye lenses of the chicken, the canary, the song-thrush and the kestrel was studied using light and scanning electron microscopy. The lenses of birds are characterized by the presence of two distinct compartments: the annular pad and the main lens body, separated by a cavum lenticuli. The annular pad fibers had a hexagonal circumference all contained a round nucleus and except for the canary were smooth-surfaced and lacking anchoring devices. In the canary, however, the annular pad fibers were studded with edge protrusions and ball-and-socket junctions. The semicircular main lens body fibers of all four species were studded with ball-and-socket junctions and edge protrusions. In contrast with mammals these anchoring devices were present throughout the lens up to the embryonal nucleus. Superficially the main lens body fibers were extremely flat. Additionally membrane elevations and depressions and globular elements were found on these central fibers in three species, the kestrel being the exception. At the transition between annular pad and main lens body the fibers turned their course and the nuclei became oval and disappeared in the deeper aspect of the main lens body. The cavum lenticuli was filled with globules tied off from the annular pad fibers. It seems attractive to assume that the presence of a separated annular pad, a cavum lenticuli filled with globular elements, the extreme flatness of the superficial central fibers and the studding of these central fibers with anchoring devices up to the embryonal nucleus are morphological expressions of the mouldability of the bird's eye lenses and consequently would explain their efficient accommodative mechanism including formation of a lenticonus. The presence of nuclei in the annular pad fibers and their typical change at the transitional zone between annular pad and main lens body are suggestive for a two-phased differentiation in bird's lens fibers: differentiation of the germinative epithelial cells to annular pad fibers which migrate to the main lens body after which they differentiate further to main lens body fibers.  相似文献

The fleece is an important component in thermoregulation of sheep exposed to high levels of solar radiation. A model written in CSMP has been developed which represents the flow of energy between the sheep and its environment. This model is based on a set of differential equations which describe the flux of heat between the components of the system--fleece, tip, skin, body and environment. It requires as input parameters location, date, time of day, temperature, relative humidity, cloud cover, wind movement, animal weight and linear measurements and fleece length. At each integration interval incoming solar radiation and its components, the heat arising from the animal's metabolism and the heat exchange by long-wave radiation, convection, conduction and evaporative cooling are computed. Temperatures at the fleece tip, skin and body core are monitored.  相似文献

The rate of sensible heat loss from a Clun Forest ewe was studied at several fleece depths in a temperature-controlled chamber. A simple resistance analogue was used to describe the heat flow from different body regions. Heat loss from the trunk depends largely on the mean fleece depth l. The fleece resistance was about 1.5 s cm-1 per centimetre depth. Heat transfer through the fleece was accounted for by molecular conduction, thermal radiation and free convection. The fleece conductivity -kb attributed to free convection depends on the mean temperature difference (-Tst---Tct) across the fleece according to the relation -kb = 8.0 (-Tst---Tct)0.53. Estimates of the sensible heat flux from the trunk at environmental temperatures, Ta, between 0 and 30 degrees C range from about 8 W (l = 7.0 cm, Ta = 30 degrees C) to about 160 W (l = 0.1 cm, Ta = 0 degrees C). In contrast, the sensible heat loss from the legs depends mainly on the local tissue resistance. For environmental temperatures between 0 and 30 degrees C, the calculated tissue resistance for this region of the body varied from about 8 to 1 s cm-1. The corresponding heat loss from the legs was between 10 and 20 W, compared with between 3 and 7 W from the head. The fastest heat loss from the legs occurred at an environmental temperature of about 12 degrees C. Although the proportion of the heat loss from the extremities depends on environmental temperature, the total heat loss (sensible or latent) was closely related to the mean skin temperature of the trunk.  相似文献

Penetration of an animal's coat by wind reduces its thermal insulation and increases heat loss to the environment. From studies of the sensible heat loss from a life-sized model sheep covered with fleece, the average fleece resistance -rf(s cm-1) was related to windspeed u (m s-1) by 1/-rf(u) = 1/-rf(0)+cu, where c is a dimensionless constant. As c is expected to be inversely proportional to coat depth l, the more general relation -k(u) = -k(0)+c'u was evaluated, where -k = l/-rf is the thermal diffusivity (cm2 s-1) of the fleece and c' = cl is another constant (cm). The orientation of the model to the wind had little effect on the bulk resistance of the fleece, but the resistance on the windward side was substantially lower than on the leeward side.  相似文献

The structure and mechanism of pupal attachment are described for the nymphalid Greta oto using electron microscopy, and high‐speed and time‐lapse photography. The cremaster is composed of a 3‐D array of hooked setae that engage with silk fibers spun into layers in a pad on the lower leaf surface. Each seta comprises a shaft terminating in a strongly curved hook, tipped with two lateral barbs. These hook into the silk pad, which is densely laid and built‐up in the central portion, flattening out peripherally. Time‐lapse photography showed that silk pad construction by fifth instar larvae is completed in four distinct spinning movements, producing a random fiber arrangement. It is proposed that such a fiber arrangement provides isotropic strength, giving greater flexibility to the attachment. The cremaster is attached to the silk pad by a series of lateral movements of the pupa's posterior abdomen. This movement, together with the shape of the setal hooks, is thought to be integral to the attachment process. Tensile loading tests showed that attachment failure is due to the breakage of the silk pad, which undergoes gradual destruction before releasing the cremaster. The attachment was found to have high tensile strength and fracture toughness, both of which suggest that it has evolved for the dual purpose of preventing the pupa being pulled from the leaf by a predator and preventing the attachment being weakened by wind, which causes the pupa to swing.  相似文献

This paper reviews genetics of fibre production and fleece characteristics in small ruminants, Angora rabbit and South American camelids with a special distinction between single-coated (SC) and double-coated (DC) species. Considering the biology of fibre production, there are variations in coat composition and structure, fibre growth pattern and fibre structure and quality between these two main kinds of fibre-producing animals. In SC species, all fibres are nearly similar in dimensions and are produced from individual follicles that have a very long period, essentially permanent, of active growth without a synchronous phase of rest between follicles. In contrast, in DC species the fleece comprises a coarse outer coat and a fine inner coat with variations of coat composition and structure, and fibre growth pattern according to the season with a well-defined duration of fibre growth. Genetic basis of hair growth pattern, coat composition and fibre structure are different between species. In small ruminants, these coat characters are additive and because of several genes whereas in rabbit, several autosomal recessive genes determine fibre growth, coat composition and structure. In alpaca, the fleece type (Suri or Huacaya) is determined by a single dominant gene. This paper also reviews genetic parameters of fibre production traits in Angora goat, Angora rabbit and alpaca in which many aspects of the genetic basis of fibre production are analogous. There are many traits controlling both fibre quality and fibre quantity, and most of these traits tend to be moderately to strongly inherited so that a rapid genetic progress in any traits is possible and indeed has been achieved. However, there are differences in breeding programmes. In DC Angora rabbit, selection for one single trait, the easy measurable total fleece weight has general beneficial effects on fleece quality. However, because of antagonistic relations between qualitative and quantitative traits in SC species, achieving this goal requires a multi-trait selection index approach. Gene mapping studies have recently identified several putative quantitative trait loci and major genes affecting fibre and fleece characteristics in sheep, goat and rabbit are reviewed. The whole genome sequence of sheep and rabbit will be available in the near future and the use of high-density single nucleotide polymorphism chip will allow fine mapping and dissection of the genetic basis of many production traits including fibre production and fleece characteristics. The application of these techniques will thus contribute to improving the efficiency, profitability and sustainability of small ruminant and rabbit fibre production.  相似文献

Background  

Fleece rot (FR) and body-strike of Merino sheep by the sheep blowfly Lucilia cuprina are major problems for the Australian wool industry, causing significant losses as a result of increased management costs coupled with reduced wool productivity and quality. In addition to direct effects on fleece quality, fleece rot is a major predisposing factor to blowfly strike on the body of sheep. In order to investigate the genetic drivers of resistance to fleece rot, we constructed a combined ovine-bovine cDNA microarray of almost 12,000 probes including 6,125 skin expressed sequence tags and 5,760 anonymous clones obtained from skin subtracted libraries derived from fleece rot resistant and susceptible animals. This microarray platform was used to profile the gene expression changes between skin samples of six resistant and six susceptible animals taken immediately before, during and after FR induction. Mixed-model equations were employed to normalize the data and 155 genes were found to be differentially expressed (DE). Ten DE genes were selected for validation using real-time PCR on independent skin samples. The genomic regions of a further 5 DE genes were surveyed to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) that were genotyped across three populations for their associations with fleece rot resistance.  相似文献

All but four of the isolates could be assigned to one of nine Pseudomonas species, of which P. aeruginosa, P. alcaligenes, P. mendocina , and P. putida were the most common. P. aeruginosa was found in four of the fleece samples and, when present, appeared to predominate. Although several of the isolates of P. aeruginosa lacked the ability to produce pyocyanin (and some produced neither pyocyanin nor fluorescein), nearly all produced several virulence factors. Of the other pseudomonads, many produced proteinase, esterase, and catalase, several were able to grow at 42 degrees C and reduce nitrate, and some also produced lipase and hemolysin and, like P. aeruginosa, might serve to initiate (or sustain) the dermatitis frequently associated with fleece rot in sheep.  相似文献

Abstract. A group of thirty-two Merino sheep infested with itch mites (Psorergates ovis) and fed a maintenance diet which imposed moderate nutritional stress had a significantly higher mite population, significantly more skin scurf, and significantly more fleece damage or derangement (P < 0.05) than a second group of thirty-two infested sheep fed a diet designed for unrestricted body weight gain and wool growth. Histologically there were no significant differences between the groups in the numbers of mast cells, neutrophils or eosinophils observed in skin sections, but sheep that had high mite counts (>10 per 200 cm2 of skin area) in both groups, had more dermal mast cells than sheep with fewer mites irrespective of the plane of nutrition. Skin thickness and greasy fleece weight in die group maintained on the low plane of nutrition were significantly less (P < 0.05) than in die well-nourished group, reflecting the difference in protein and energy content of the two diets. Within the nutritionally stressed group, the sheep with low mite counts had a significantly lower (P < 0.05) greasy fleece weight and a shorter mean staple length than the sheep with high mite counts. There was no significant difference in greasy fleece weight between sheep with low or high mite counts in the group fed on the high plane of nutrition.  相似文献

Research into vaccination against flystrike is aimed at either controlling the predisposing condition, fleece rot, or direct control of the fly maggots. A vaccine against the major bacterial species found in fleece rot lesions, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, is undergoing field trials and results suggest that this vaccine may reduce fleece rot incidence. Problems to be investigated include the existence of variants of P. aeruginosa in the field and the involvement of other species of bacteria in fleece rot. Strategies for direct vaccination include immunization with larval products involved in wound formation and larval nutrition and immunization against novel antigens usually from the gut of first instar larvae. Both methods have resulted in significant inhibition of larval growth. Analysis of larval products has revealed a number of active proteases which degrade skin proteins such as collagen. Inhibition of these enzymes with plasma enzyme inhibitors also affects larval growth in vitro. Antibodies raised against these enzymes are being tested for inhibitory effects against larvae and used to isolate cDNA clones from Lucilia cuprina libraries. Antigens from the gut are able to induce antibodies inhibitory to larval growth both in vitro and in vivo. Isolation of these antigens is proceeding in a number of laboratories. Problems still to be analysed include whether growth inhibition produces effective protection in the field and whether sufficient antibody will have early access to the larvae to significantly affect them.  相似文献

The developments in Norwegian sheep breeding since the early 1990s are reviewed. For the largest breeding population, the Norwegian White Sheep, results are presented for both genetic and phenotypic changes. Of the nine traits that make up the aggregate genotype, the largest gain per year, in per cent of the corresponding phenotypic average, was found for carcass grade (1.66%) and carcass weight (0.99%), number of lambs born at 1, 2 and 3 years of age (0.32% to 0.60%) and the maternal effect on weaning weight (0.26%). For fat grade, a genetic deterioration was estimated. This may be due to the too small weighting of this trait in the aggregate genotype and the true genetic parameters being somewhat different from the estimates in the prediction of breeding values. For lamb as well as ewe fleece weight, genetic change was close to zero - interpreted as mainly a correlated response to other traits in the aggregate genotype. Data for the two traits of fleece weight were, respectively, selected and few. Thus, phenotypic change was calculated for all traits except for fleece weight, and in addition for number of lambs at weaning, being indirectly selected for through number of lambs born. For all traits, with the exception of fat grade, advantageous phenotypic change was estimated. For weaning and carcass weight, the phenotypic change was less than the genetic change, while the opposite was observed for carcass and fat grade and number of lambs born. The latter traits can be more easily controlled by environmental actions, and the results thus exemplify the interdependency between environmental and genetic change.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of abdominal fat pad aspiration cytology as a screening procedure for systemic amyloidosis and to assess the clinical usefulness of semiquantitative grading criteria of fat pad amyloid deposits. STUDY DESIGN: Aspiration cytology samples from 297 cases of abdominal fat pad were retrospectively analyzed for amyloid deposits. The smears were graded semiquantitatively. The deposits in the smears were compared with histologic evidence of amyloidosis in deeper tissues in 44 cases. RESULTS: Retrospective analysis of 297 cases of aspiration cytology revealed amyloid in 90 cases. Follow-up biopsies from deeper tissues in 44 cases showed presence of systemic amyloidosis in 13 cases. The sensitivity and specificity of abdominal fat pad fine needle aspiration cytology was 78% and 93%, respectively. The positive predictive value was 84% and negative predictive value 90%. CONCLUSION: Fat pad aspiration cytology is a useful screening procedure for diagnosis of systemic amyloidosis. Patients with grade 1 deposits should not undergo a toxic therapeutic regimen on the basis of fat pad cytology alone; histologic confirmation of visceral amyloid deposition in deeper tissue is advised. Patients with grades 2 and 3 deposits may undergo suitable therapy for amyloidosis.  相似文献

Development of the nociceptive response produced by both slight and noxious action on the foot pad and in hair-covered skin was investigated during acute experiments on cats. The action of diverse noxious stimuli upon the skin of the foot pad failed to elicit nociceptive reflexes but regularly did so in the case of the hair-covered skin adjacent to that of the foot pad. These reflexes were evoked by sensory signals transmitted along unmyelinated fibers. No C-afferent activity was recorded when quantifying afferent flows arising in response to noxious foot pad stimulation; this contrasted with flows of impulses produced by injuring hair-covered skin and that covering the foot pad. The absence of C-afferents traveling from the latter area means that no peripheral coding of nociceptive signals takes place; nor are any nociceptive reflexes set up in the foot pad by greatly intensified action.Research Institute of Applied Mathematics and Cybernetics, N.
