Syngonanthus elegans flowers are distributed in capitula whose involucral bracts open and close in a diurnal rhythm. The anatomy of these bracts was studied to understand how such movements occur and how it influences reproductive ecology of the species. The involucral bracts have a single layered epidermis composed of thick-walled cells on the abaxial surface, which are responsible for the movement. Since they are hygroscopic, these cells swell when they absorb water from the surrounding environment, causing the bracts to bend and the capitula to close. In natural conditions, the capitula open by day, when temperature increases and the relative air humidity decreases, and close at night, when temperature decreases and the relative air humidity increases. The involucral bracts may thus protect the flowers from abiotic factors, exposing them only at the time of the day when temperature is higher and insects are more active, favoring pollination by small insects. The closed capitula do not only protect the flowers, but they also function as a shelter for floral visitors as Brachiacantha australe (Coccinellidae) and Eumolpini sp. (Chrysomelidae). These small Coleoptera pollinate the flowers of S. elegans during the day and remain within the closed capitula during the night, in a possible mutualistic relationship.  相似文献

Gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters of PSII were analyzed in the bracts and leaves of cotton plants after anthesis. Photosynthetic activity and photorespiration were measured in the leaves and bracts of cotton grown under either normal or reduced water-saving drip irrigation. The photosynthetic performance, amount of chlorophyll and Rubisco, and net photosynthesis were greater in the bracts than that in the leaves under water stress. The actual photochemical efficiency of PSII decreased in both the bracts and leaves after anthesis under reduced irrigation. However, the decrease was smaller in the bracts than in the leaves, indicating that the bracts experienced less severe photoinhibition compared to the leaves. The greater drought tolerance of bracts could be related to differences in relative water content, instantaneous water-use efficiency, and photorespiration rate. The ratio of photorespiration to net photosynthesis was much higher in the bracts than in leaves. Furthermore, water deficiency (due to the water-saving drip irrigation) had no significant effect on that ratio in the bracts. We hypothesized that photorespiration in the bracts alleviated photoinhibition and maintained photosynthetic activity.  相似文献

在新疆气候生态条件下, 采用膜下滴灌植棉技术, 设置不同滴灌水分处理, 研究了不同滴灌量条件下棉花(Gossypium hirsutum)苞叶和叶片碳同化、光呼吸作用、光系统II (PSII)热耗散作用及其光破坏防御机制的差异, 以揭示滴灌节水条件下棉花苞叶缓解光抑制的机理及与棉花抗旱特性的关系。结果表明: 棉花开花后苞叶及叶片在高温强光下实际光化学效率(ΦPSII)显著降低, 发生明显的光抑制现象, 但苞叶的光抑制程度较叶片轻; 与正常滴灌量处理相比, 节水滴灌条件下棉花水分亏缺, 叶片净光合速率(Pn)、ΦPSII、光呼吸(Pr)、光化学猝灭系数(qP)降低, 非光化学猝灭系数(NPQ)升高, 叶片光抑制程度加重, 而苞叶Pn、ΦPSII、Pr、qP、NPQ变化不大, 与正常滴灌量处理相比, 光抑制程度无显著差异。苞叶光呼吸速率与光合速率的比值(Pr/Pn)显著高于叶片; 滴灌节水条件下棉花适度水分亏缺对苞叶光呼吸及Pr/Pn无显著影响。高温强光下, 棉花节水滴灌对叶片PSII量子产量的转化与分配影响显著, 但对苞叶的影响不显著; 苞叶非调节性能量耗散的量子产量(Y(NPQ))高于叶片, 因此能有效地将PSII的过剩光能以热的形式耗散。综上所述, 与叶片相比, 苞叶对轻度水分亏缺不敏感, 是棉花适应干旱逆境较强的器官, 苞叶光呼吸和热耗散作用对光破坏防御具有重要意义。  相似文献

The initiation and growth of axillary meristems are fundamental components of plant architecture. Here, we describe the mutant missing flowers (mf) of Helianthus annuus characterized by the lack of axillary shoots. Decapitation experiments and histological analysis indicate that this phenotype is the result of a defect in axillary meristem initiation. In addition to shoot branching, mutation affects floral differentiation. The indeterminate inflorescence of sunflower (capitulum) is formed of a large flat meristem which produces floret primordia in multiple spirals. In wildtype plants a bisecting crease divides each primordium in two distinct bumps that adopt different fate. The peripheral (abaxial) part of the primordium becomes a small leaf-like bract and the adaxial part becomes a flower. In the mf mutant, the formation of flowers at the axil of bracts is precluded. Histological analyses show that in floret primordia of the mutant a clear subdivision in dyads is not established. The primordia progressively bend inside and only large involucral floral bracts are developed. The results suggest that the MISSING FLOWERS gene is essential to provide or perceive an appropriate signal to the initiation of axillary meristems during both vegetative and reproductive phases.  相似文献

Disturbances like hurricanes can affect diversity and community composition, which may in turn affect ecosystem function. We examined how a simulated hurricane disturbance affected insect communities inhabiting the phytotelma (plant-held waters) of Heliconia caribaea in the Luquillo Experimental Forest of eastern Puerto Rico, a tropical island that frequently experiences hurricanes. We hypothesized that disturbance would alter diversity and that larger Heliconia would attract more species following disturbance due to the area-diversity relationship described by the Theory of Island Biogeography. Individual flower parts (bracts) of Heliconia inflorescences (racemes) were artificially disturbed via removal of existing insect communities, then after refilling with water, cohorts of Heliconia were destructively sampled biweekly for 6 weeks to assess recolonization patterns of α (bract level), β, and γ (summed across bracts; raceme level) diversity over time and across raceme sizes. Although we found no support for our hypothesis about the effect of raceme size on recolonization, our hypothesis regarding recolonization patterns over time was supported; species richness, evenness, and abundance of bracts increased directly after the disturbance and then decreased below pre-disturbance levels, and community composition at the raceme level changed significantly over time during recolonization. β Diversity was also greater in smaller racemes compared to larger racemes, suggesting high heterogeneity across bracts of Heliconia racemes exacerbated by raceme size and age. Overall, our results highlight the importance of scale and appropriate measurements of diversity (particularly α) in experiments aiming to extrapolate conclusions about the ecological impacts of disturbances across different habitats and ecosystems.  相似文献

The yeast pheromone response pathway is a canonical three-step mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascade which requires a scaffold protein for proper signal transduction. Recent experimental studies into the role the scaffold plays in modulating the character of the transduced signal, show that the presence of the scaffold increases the biphasic nature of the signal response. This runs contrary to prior theoretical investigations into how scaffolds function. We describe a mathematical model of the yeast MAPK cascade specifically designed to capture the experimental conditions and results of these empirical studies. We demonstrate how the system can exhibit either graded or ultrasensitive (biphasic) response dynamics based on the binding kinetics of enzymes to the scaffold. At the basis of our theory is an analytical result that weak interactions make the response biphasic while tight interactions lead to a graded response. We then show via an analysis of the kinetic binding rate constants how the results of experimental manipulations, modeled as changes to certain of these binding constants, lead to predictions of pathway output consistent with experimental observations. We demonstrate how the results of these experimental manipulations are consistent within the framework of our theoretical treatment of this scaffold-dependent MAPK cascades, and how future efforts in this style of systems biology can be used to interpret the results of other signal transduction observations.  相似文献

Although there has been much experimental work on floral traits that are under selection from mutualists and antagonists, selection by abiotic environmental factors on flowers has been largely ignored. Here we test whether pollen susceptibility to rain damage could have played a role in the evolution of the reproductive architecture of Davidia involucrata, an endemic in the mountains of western China. Flowers in this tree species lack a perianth and are arranged in capitula surrounded by large (up to 10 cm x 5 cm) bracts that at anthesis turn from green to white, losing their photosynthetic capability. Flowers are nectarless, and pollen grains are presented on the recurved anther walls for 5-7 days. Flower visitors, and likely pollinators, were mainly pollen-collecting bees from the genera Apis, Xylocopa, Halictus, and Lasioglossum. Capitula with natural or white paper bracts attracted significantly more bees per hour than capitula that had their bracts removed or replaced by green paper. Experimental immersion of pollen grains in water resulted in rapid loss of viability, and capitula with bracts lost less pollen to rain than did capitula that had their bracts removed, suggesting that the bracts protect the pollen from rain damage as well as attracting pollinators.  相似文献

Specialized bracts are thought to be important for the successful reproduction of some plants and are regarded as adaptations to diverse driving forces. However, few empirical studies have quantified the adaptive significance of bracts within a cost–benefit framework. We explored the adaptive significance of large and showy bracts for reproduction in Rheum nobile, a giant herb endemic to the high Himalayas. We examined whether the bracts enhance reproductive success during flowering and seed development. Bracts increased flower and fruit temperature on sunny days, greatly decreased the intensity of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation reaching flowers and fruits, and prevented pollen grains being washed away by rain. Experiments indicated that high temperature could promote pollen germination, while pollen grains exposed to rain and UV-B radiation at ambient levels were seriously damaged. Furthermore, bract removal decreased the number of pollinators visiting flowers. When bracts were removed before or after flowering, fecundity and progeny quality were adversely affected, but seed predation by larvae of pollinators decreased. A cost–benefit analysis demonstrated that the cost of bracts, i.e., increased seed predation, is modest. Our results suggest that the bracts of R. nobile promote pollen germination, protect pollen grains from rain and intense UV-B radiation, enhance pollinator visitation during flowering, and facilitate the development of fertilized ovules during seed development. We conclude that multifunctional bracts of R. nobile are an effective adaptive strategy in alpine environments and might have been selected for because of abiotic environmental conditions as well as for enhancing pollination success.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Elucidation of the mechanisms by which plants adapt to elevated CO2 is needed; however, most studies of the mechanisms investigated the response of plants adapted to current atmospheric CO2. The rapid respiration rate of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) fruits (bolls) produces a concentrated CO2 microenvironment around the bolls and bracts. It has been observed that the intercellular CO2 concentration of a whole fruit (bract and boll) ranges from 500 to 1300 µmol mol−1 depending on the irradiance, even in ambient air. Arguably, this CO2 microenvironment has existed for at least 1·1 million years since the appearance of tetraploid cotton. Therefore, it was hypothesized that the mechanisms by which cotton bracts have adapted to elevated CO2 will indicate how plants will adapt to future increased atmospheric CO2 concentration. Specifically, it is hypothesized that with elevated CO2 the capacity to regenerate ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) will increase relative to RuBP carboxylation.

Methods

To test this hypothesis, the morphological and physiological traits of bracts and leaves of cotton were measured, including stomatal density, gas exchange and protein contents.

Key results

Compared with leaves, bracts showed significantly lower stomatal conductance which resulted in a significantly higher water use efficiency. Both gas exchange and protein content showed a significantly greater RuBP regeneration/RuBP carboxylation capacity ratio (Jmax/Vcmax) in bracts than in leaves.

Conclusions

These results agree with the theoretical prediction that adaptation of photosynthesis to elevated CO2 requires increased RuBP regeneration. Cotton bracts are readily available material for studying adaption to elevated CO2.  相似文献

The Berg hypothesis posits that, in plants with specialized pollination systems, floral characters should evolve to become integrated with each other and decoupled from vegetative characters. We test this hypothesis by comparing serially homologous and morphologically similar characters in leaves and involucral bracts in the Neotropical vine Dalechampia scandens, which has a specialized pollination system based on resin-collecting bees. The involucral bracts serve a number of specialized floral functions, including signaling and protection, that may put them under stronger selection for precision than the less specialized leaves. The homology and morphological similarity of the leaves and bracts allow us to make a sharper test of Berg’s hypothesis than is possible in most other systems. We found support for the hypothesis in that the bracts had lower coefficients of variation than the leaves for comparable traits. Also in support of the hypothesis, we found essentially zero phenotypic correlations between bracts and leaves at the same time that we found moderate correlations between different leaves and between different bracts. In contradiction to the hypothesis, however, we did not find higher correlations among traits within bracts than within leaves, and we found no evidence of bracts being more developmentally stable than the leaves.  相似文献

Light saturated net photosynthesis was measured in bracts and leaves ofCarpinus laxiflora, the major species in secondary forests in cool and intermediate temperate zones in Japan. The maximum net photosynthesis of leaves and bracts was essentially constant from May to early August and decreased gradually thereafter. For bracts, it was 3.2 μmol m−2s−1, approximately half that for the leaves. The photosynthesis of bracts would thus appear to contribute significantly to seed maturity. The estimated production of bract based on the photosynthesis would make seeds (3 mg dry weight) mature for 37 days, assuming all photosynthate of the bracts to have been distributed in the seeds only. This was quite consistent with the growth curve for the seeds. A mast year phenomenon is discussed in relation to bract photosynthesis and leaf number.  相似文献

Bracts that lacked chlorophyll were compared with rosette leaves on the Chinese glasshouse plant Rheum alexandrae Batalin. The structures were analyzed anatomically and with photospectrometry. Histological features were significantly different between the bracts and the rosette leaves. Epidermal pavement cells and palisade cells were larger in the bracts than in the rosette leaves, but the ratio of the intercellular spaces to the cells in the palisade layer was the same in the two structures. Absorption spectrum analyses of the half-translucent bracts showed that, despite their thinner structure, they absorbed ultraviolet (UV) radiation more efficiently than did the green rosette leaves. The characteristics of the R. alexandrae bracts were different from those of the Himalayan glasshouse plant Rheum nobile. These results suggest that R. alexandrae evolved bracts as an adaptive strategy to protect the inflorescence from UV radiation.  相似文献

Summary Complex or non-additive differences in the distribution and abundance of arthropod species inhabiting the water-filled bracts ofHeliconia imbricata can be created by simple manipulations of resource levels. The primary resources for these assemblages are the corollas of the flowers that accumulate in the bracts. Removing or adding corollas to individual bracts changes the pattern in the abundance of arthropod species within each bract such that bracts with different treatments ultimately differ in composition and numerical associations among species. These results suggest that direct and indirect resource-mediated factors can structure or significantly affect the distribution and abundance of species in these and perhaps other assemblages. Thus, in natural communities, if resources are heterogeneous among patches (such as among the bracts in this study) structure in a given patch may be a function of the resource level of that patch and can differ significantly from neighboring patches that provide different resource levels.  相似文献

The Extracellular signal Regulated Kinase (ERK) pathway is one of the most well-studied signaling pathways in cell cycle regulation. Disruption in the normal functioning of this pathway is linked to many forms of cancer. In a previous study [D.K. Pant, A. Ghosh, Automated oncogene detection in complex protein networks, with applications to the MAPK signal transduction pathway, Biophys. Chem. 113 (2005) 275-288.], we developed a novel approach to predict single point mutations that are likely to cause cellular transformation in signaling transduction networks. We have extended this method to study disparate pair mutation in enzyme/protein interactions and in expression levels in signal transduction pathway and have applied it to the MAPK signaling pathway to study how synergistic or cooperative mutation within signaling networks acts in unison to cause malignant transformation. The method provides a quantitative ranking of the modifier pair of ERK activation. It is seen that the highest ranking single point mutations comprise the highest ranking pair mutations. We validate some of our results with experimental literature on multiple mutations. A second order sensitivity analysis scheme is additionally used to determine the effect of correlations among mutations at different sites in the pathways.  相似文献

The mitogen-activated protein kinase cascade is a conserved signal transduction pathway found in organisms of complexity spanning from yeast to humans. In many mammalian tissue types, this pathway can correctly transduce signals from different extracellular messengers, leading to specific and often mutually exclusive cellular responses. The transduced signal is tuned by a complicated set of positive and negative feedback control mechanisms and fed into a downstream gene expression network. This network, based on the immediate early gene system, has two possible, mutually exclusive outcomes. Using a mathematical model, we study how different stimuli lead to different temporal signal structure. Further, we investigate how each of the feedback controls contributes to the overall specificity of the gene expression output, and hypothesize that the complicated nature of the mammalian mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway results in a system able to robustly identify and transduce the proper signal without investing in two completely separate signal cascades. Finally, we quantify the role of the RKIP protein in shaping the signal, and propose a novel mechanism of its involvement in cancer metastasis.  相似文献

(Ⅰ)对荨麻科楼梯草属的苞片和小苞片的形态进行了全面研究。(Ⅱ)该属原始群疏伞楼梯草组的雄聚伞花序苞片在每花序为15-90枚,纸质,绿色,狭卵形、狭三角形或条形,长0.5-4mm,扁平,无任何突起,而与楼梯草族的冷水花属和赤车属的聚伞花序苞片极为相似,因此,上述各种形态可以视为楼梯草属苞片的原始特征,并据此观察到总苞苞片的以下演化趋势:(1)近等大,形状相似,在花序托边缘轮生形成一层→排列为二层,外层2苞片对生,较大,内层苞片较小,形状稍不同;(2)狭卵形,狭三角形或条形→宽卵形或宽三角形,或扁半圆形→由于长度强烈缩小,宽度增大而最终消失;(3)扁平→顶端兜形→船形→船形,顶端突起成细筒;(4)无任何突起0背面有1龙骨状突起,或有1-6条纵肋或狭翅1顶端具短到长的角状突起→背面顶端之下具角状突起;(5)分生→基部合生→由于长度强烈缩小,宽度强烈增大,总苞苞片合生成一横条形狭片;(6)在数目上,由每花序的7-45枚,一方面增加到50-180枚,另一方面则减少到5枚以下。同时,观察到小苞片形态以下演化趋势:(1)膜质,半透明,白色0具褐色线纹或呈褐色→呈黑色1薄膜质,透明,无色;(2)扁平→顶端兜形→船形;(3)无任何突起→顶端或在背面顶端之下具角状突起;(4)在数目上,由每花序的7-45枚一方面增加到100或数百枚,甚至达1千到数千枚,另一方面则减少到5枚以下,甚至到0枚。上述演化趋势有助于了解属下各级分类群的演化水平。  相似文献

以生长于同一生境下的粉红珙桐(粉红色叶片、苞片)与普通珙桐(绿色叶片、白色苞片)为试材,对比两种色彩珙桐叶片/苞片解剖结构和色素含量的差异,以揭示珙桐色彩转变的规律。结果显示:(1)两种珙桐叶片均属于异面叶类型,栅栏组织由一层长柱形细胞整齐排列而成,海绵组织排列疏松,部分粉红叶片的上表皮细胞向外凸起,绿叶无此现象;粉红叶片的总厚度及其表皮角质层、栅栏组织和海绵组织厚度都高于绿叶,而表皮较薄。(2)两种珙桐苞片均无栅栏组织和海绵组织的分化,粉红苞片上表皮细胞明显隆起,上表皮角质层增厚,而下表皮变薄。(3)粉红叶片的类黄酮、花色苷含量分别是绿色叶片的1.52倍、3.67倍,两者的光合色素含量无显著差异,但粉红叶片的叶绿素a/b值比绿色叶低很多;粉红苞片花色苷含量显著高于白色苞片,而两者类黄酮含量差异不大。研究表明,花色苷是珙桐叶片和苞片色彩转红的直接因素,类黄酮有助于叶片呈红色;粉红珙桐叶片/苞片的解剖结构发生了一定变化,对光能的利用效率更高,对阴湿环境的适应性增强。  相似文献

The pot experiment with three treatments of nitrogen (N) topdressing was performed with the japonica rice cultivar viz. Huaidao 5. Remobilization of nine mineral nutrients including N, phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), and copper (Cu) was measured from the source organs including bracts, leaf, and sheath to sink rice grain. Experimental results showed considerable contribution of bracts to grain for N, Mg, and Zn, with the averages contributions of 5.96, 12.56, and 12.34%, respectively, indicating a positive role of rice bracts in N, Mg, and Zn remobilization during grain filling. By contrast, minor contribution of bracts to grain P, K, and Cu was revealed, with the contribution rate being 0.99, 3.90, and 3.05%, respectively. Further, a net increase in Ca and Fe concentrations of bracts was detected, implying that bracts function as a sink of these mineral nutrients. In addition, grains produced at a moderate level of N topdressing had higher Fe and similar Zn concentration in comparison with those at high N level, suggesting the possibility of N management for maintaining Fe and Zn level under high yielding conditions.  相似文献
