Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) cultivars differ in susceptibilityto stress-induced abscission. Previous research indicates thatthe stress susceptible cultivar 'Shamrock' undergoes a largerreduction in net assimilation rate (NAR) under low light stress, and partitions less dry matter (DM) to reproductive structuresand more to leaves than the more tolerant cultivar 'Ace'. Todetermine if photosynthetic rates under low light stress couldexplain NAR differences, photosynthesis was measured on 'Ace'and 'Shamrock'. Assimilate partitioning was compared throughmeasurement of leaf and bud respiration rates and analysis ofbud sugar concentrations. Photosynthetic rates per unit leafarea of leaves fully exposed to incident light revealed no cultivardifferences under low light conditions. Bud respiration ratesfell to a lower level in 'Shamrock' than 'Ace' in low light-stressedplants, while expanded leaves respired at higher rates in 'Shamrock'than 'Ace' under both full and low light. Bud sugar concentrationswere significantly lower in 'Shamrock' than 'Ace' after 3 dof low light stress. Susceptibility to low light stress-inducedabscission in 'Shamrock' appears to be associated with reducedassimilate partitioning to flower buds, which may be relatedto high assimilate consumption in maintenance of expanded leaves.Copyright1994, 1999 Academic Press Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), abscission, low light stress, photosynthesis, respiration, sugars, assimilate partitioning, cultivar  相似文献

In microplot field experiments conducted over the course of 12 years, the accumulation of dry matter was recorded in the leaves, stems, and ears of the primary shoots of plants of four cultivars of spring wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) differing in productivity and drought resistance. The contribution of organs to the accumulation of dry matter by the shoot from emergence to anthesis was calculated, and relative changes in the weight of the ear after anthesis were assessed. In all the cultivars, the contribution of the leaves was the same; however, the share of the ear was greater in short-stem cultivars of the intensive type in which the leaves were more active during the time of grain filling. Furthermore, this load increased, and the relative increment in the ear weight after flowering decreased in the years of drought, because the contribution of the leaves did not depend on water supply during the growing season. During these years, the contribution of the ear increased in the plants of all the cultivars. The authors conclude that, in arid regions, in addition to drought resistance, the cultivar should display such a ratio between the ear weight and the weight of leaves that would still ensure satisfactory grain filling  相似文献

Flower abscission induced by ethylene in three Plectranthus cultivars was investigated in order to characterise response to a range of inhibitory and antagonistic compounds. Excised inflorescences were exposed to 100 ml l−1 ethylene gas or placed in various concentrations of ethephon (277, 27.7, 2.77, 0.277 and 0.0277 μM). Flower abscission in Plectranthus was readily induced by applying ethylene gas and by the 277 μM dose of ethephon. Removal of the inflorescences from the ethylene treatment prevented subsequent flower abscission. This implies that ethylene treatment did not induce an autocatalytic production of ethylene. Compounds that are known to compete for the ethylene receptor (100 and 500 ppb 1-methylcyclopropene or 100 and 500 ppm 2,5-norbornadiene) did not reduce abscission in this system. Also, application of the ethylene biosynthesis inhibitor, aminooxyacetic acid at 1 mM, was ineffective at preventing ethylene-induced flower abscission. In contrast, one compound known to block protein production (100 μM cycloheximide) and a non-competitive inhibitor of ethylene action (2 mM silver thiosulfate) did prevent ethylene-induced abscission. We conclude that flower abscission in cut inflorescences of Plectranthus is very likely mediated by endogenous ethylene production, but that control of ethylene-induced flower abscission in this genus can not be readily obtained by most ethylene antagonists that are known to be effective in other systems.  相似文献

Infection by Crinipellis perniciosa on cacao seedlings prevented the abscission of cotyledons which normally abscise within 32–61 days from seed sowing. The early growth and development of control and artificially inoculated seedlings was investigated for root dry mass (RDM), shoot dry mass (SDM), shoot‐to‐root ratio (SRR), total dry mass (TDM), cotyledonary dry mass (CDM) and cotyledonary water content (CWC). Cotyledonary reserve mobilization was estimated at 69 and 56% at 5 weeks and 79 and 64% at 8 weeks in control and infected seedlings, respectively. Infection induced the enlargement of tissues but was not accompanied by an increase in dry mass. Infection both delayed and reduced the utilization of cotyledonary food reserves resulting in slower accumulation of RDM, SDM and TDM culminating in a reduction of growth by a factor of 1.6 at 8 weeks. However, the SRR of inoculated plants was similar to that of control plants, suggesting that the balance between the root and shoot systems exists which is unchanged by the effect of the pathogen. CWC was decreased upon senescence to an average of 65% at abscission. The prevention of cotyledonary abscission in infected seedlings is suggested to be due in part to the CDM remaining above a critical level of 20% of the initial CDM. The implication of this response in relation to the infection biology of the pathogen is discussed.  相似文献

Photosynthesis in Two Wheat Cultivars Differing in Salt Susceptibility   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

Salinised (150 mM NaCl for 15 d) roots excised from salt sensitive wheat cultivar Giza 163 showed about 15-fold increase in the ratio of Na/K while salt tolerant Sakha 92 exhibited only 7.5-fold increase compared to their control ratios. Root ratio of saturated/unsaturated fatty acids was stimulated twice in the sensitive cultivar versus 1.7-fold increase in the tolerant ones. Salinity enhanced greatly the accumulation of spermine (Spm) and spermidine (Spd) contents associated with a decrease in putrescine (Put) content in both wheat cultivars. Higher ratios of Spm+Spd/Put associated with lower content of proline and low ethylene evolution were detected in shoots and roots of salt tolerant cultivar. Chlorophyll a/b ratio showed an increase from 1.3 in control of both cultivars to 1.6 and 1.4 in stressed Giza 163 and Sakha 92, respectively. A reduced Hill reaction activity (19 %) was observed in stressed chloroplasts isolated from leaves of the tolerant cultivar versus 40 % inhibition in the sensitive ones. Moreover, chloroplasts isolated from stressed leaves of the sensitive cultivar showed about 25 % reduction in fluorescence emission at 685 nm as well as shifts in the peaks in the visible region.  相似文献

A Simulation Model for Dry Matter Partitioning in Cucumber   总被引:22,自引:0,他引:22
A dynamic model is developed for the simulation of the dailydry matter distribution between the generative and vegetativeplant parts and the distribution among individual fruits ingreenhouse cucumber. The model is based on the hypothesis thatdry matter partitioning is regulated by the sink strengths ofthe plant organs. The sink strength of an organ is defined hereas its potential growth rate, i.e. the growth rate at non-limitingassimilate supply. The sink strength of each individual fruitis described as a function of its temperature sum after anthesisand the actual temperature, that of the vegetative plant partsas a function of actual temperature only. The formation rateof non-aborting fruits is essentially a function of the source/sinkratio. Model results agreed well with the measured fluctuating distributionof dry matter between fruits and vegetative parts. The measuredeffects of three intensities of fruit removal were also simulatedsatisfactorily. When simulating the partitioning among individualfruits the final fruit size was simulated quite well. However, the growth rate of young fruits was usually overestimated andthat of old fruits underestimated, because of dominance amongfruits. This phenomenon could be accounted for by incorporatingpriority functions into the model. Finally, a sensitivity analysisof the model was performed to investigate the effects of someclimatic factors, manipulations of the number of fruits on aplant and model parameters on dry matter distribution. Strategiesto manipulate the dry matter distribution are discussed.Copyright1994, 1999 Academic Press Cucumber, Cucumis sativus (L.), dry matter distribution, fruit growth, partitioning, simulation model, source-sink  相似文献

The patterns of fruit growth, abscission and dry matter accumulationwere determined for ungirdled macadamia branches and comparedwith the patterns on girdled branches. The relationships betweenfruit set, fruit drop, and the number of available leaves werealso assessed. Approximately 50 leaves were required to supportdevelopment of each fruit on girdled branches, so that finalfruit numbers on girdled branches were higher or lower thanon ungirdled controls, depending on leaf number. High leaf numbersdid not cause any increase in fruit size on girdled branches, but low leaf numbers resulted in fruit volumes up to 23% lowerthan the controls. The number of fruits set on ungirdled brancheswas independent of the number of leaves on the branch. Defoliationof ungirdled branches had no effect on the number of fruitsset, with fruit set on these branches apparently being supportedalmost entirely from carbohydrates obtained elsewhere in thetree. Three phases of fruit drop were observed, with maximaat 2, 6-7, and 10 weeks post-anthesis, separated by phases ofrelatively low fruit drop at 4 and 8 weeks post-anthesis. Themaximum dry weight increase of the crop occurred between 10and 20 weeks post-anthesis, when there was very little fruitdrop. Therefore, although limited availability of assimilatesmay influence fruit retention in macadamia, there is no simplerelationship between structural carbon demand and fruit drop.Copyright1994, 1999 Academic Press Macadamia integrifolia Maiden and Betche, Macadamia tetraphylla L. To evaluate leaf carbon balance during rapid pod-fill in soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merrill), measurements were made of CO2 assimilation at mid-day and changes in specific leaf weight, starch, and sucrose concentrations over a 9-hour interval. Assimilate export was estimated from CO2 assimilation and leaf dry matter accumulation. Chamber-grown `Amsoy 71' and `Wells' plants were subjected on the day of the measurements to one of six photosynthetic photon flux densities in order to vary CO2 assimilation rates.

Rate of accumulation of leaf dry matter and rate of export both increased as CO2 assimilation rate increased in each cultivar.

Starch concentrations were greater in Amsoy 71 than in Wells at all CO2 assimilation rates. At low CO2 assimilation rates, export rates in Amsoy 71 were maintained in excess of 1.0 milligram CH2O per square decimeter leaf area per hour at the expense of leaf reserves. In Wells, however, export rate continued to decline with decreasing CO2 assimilation rate. The low leaf starch concentration in Wells at low CO2 assimilation rates may have limited export by limiting carbon from starch remobilization.

Both cultivars exhibited positive correlations between CO2 assimilation rate and sucrose concentration, and between sucrose concentration and export rate. Carbon fixation and carbon partitioning both influenced export rate via effects on sucrose concentration.

Dry Matter Partitioning in Tomato: Validation of a Dynamic Simulation Model   总被引:15,自引:1,他引:15

A model for dynamic simulation of dry matter distribution betweenreproductive and vegetative plant parts and the distributionamong individual fruit trusses in glasshouse tomato, is validated. The model is part of the crop growth model TOMSIM and is basedon the hypothesis that dry matter distribution is regulatedby the sink strengths of the plant organs, quantified by theirpotential growth rates, i.e. the growth rates at non-limitingassimilate supply. Within the plant, individual fruit trussesare distinguished and sink strength of a truss is describedas a function of its development stage. Truss development rateis a function of temperature only. The same potential growthcurve, proportional to the number of fruits per truss, is adoptedfor all trusses. In a simple version of the model, vegetativeplant parts are lumped together as one sink with a constantsink strength. In a more detailed version, vegetative sink strengthis calculated as the sum of sink strengths of vegetative units(three leaves and stem internodes between two trusses). The model was validated for six glasshouse experiments, coveringeffects of planting date, plant density, number of fruits pertruss (pruning at anthesis), truss removal (every second trussremoved at anthesis), single- and double-shoot plants and atemperature experiment conducted in climate rooms at 17, 20or 23 °C. Daily increase in above-ground dry weight, averagedaily temperatures and number of set fruits per truss were inputsto the model. Both the simple and the more detailed model showedgood agreement between measured and simulated fraction of drymatter partitioned into the fruits over time. For the simpleversion of the model, the slope of the lines relating simulatedto measured fraction partitioned into the fruits (16 data sets),varied between 0.92 and 1.11, on average it was 1.04, implying4% over-estimation for this fraction. For the detailed modelthese numbers were slightly better: 0.89, 1.08 and 1.01, respectively. The temperature experiment revealed no important direct influenceof temperature on the ratio between generative and vegetativesink strength. Simulated truss growth curves showed reasonableagreement with the measurements, although both models over-estimated(17% on average) final dry weight of the lower trusses (truss1 –3) on a plant. Modelling dry matter partitioning basedon sink strengths of organs is promising, as it is a general, dynamic and flexible approach, showing good agreement betweenmeasurements and simulation for a range of conditions. Applicabilityof the model is, however, still limited as long as the numberof fruits per truss (flower and /or fruit abortion) is not simulated,as this is a major feedback mechanism in plant growth. A method was developed for the inoculation of flowers of cut roses with conidia of Botrytis cinerea. Flower buds were inoculated by spraying of conidial supensions that were ultrasonicated for 10 s. The differences in susceptibility between 8 rose cvs to infections of isolate Bc-33 and the differences in pathogenicity between 14 5. cinerea isolates to cv. ‘Sonia’ were evaluated. Isolates obtained from rose flowers caused higher infection rates than those obtamed from various other hosts. The CVS ‘Madelon’, ‘Melody’ and ‘Sonia’ were found to be highly susceptible, whereas the cvs ‘Caramboie’, ‘Gabriella’, ‘Pasadena’ and ‘Rubinette’ were only slightly susceptible. The lower disease severity in the less susceptible cvs was based on a retardation of the growth of mfection hyphae in the petals, which may have been due to partial resistance. The formation of symptoms is effectuated already by the initial stages in the infection process. Thus, the apparent existing partial resistance to infections of B. cinerea cannot prevent the loss of ornamental value.  相似文献

The regulation of the partitioning of dry matter and calciumin relation to fruit growth was investigated in cucumber plantsgrown in the salinity range of 3-8 mS cm-1 in NFT (NutrientFilm Culture), with or without a fruit pruning treatment. Thedry weight gain of the plants was proportional to the outdoorintegral irradiance, with a common daily rate of 1 g MJ-1 m-2in two crops grown under summer (18 MJ m-2 d-1) and autumn (7MJ m-2 d-1) conditions. Within the salinity range studied, thereduction of plant dry weight was 9% mS-1 cm-1. However, fruitdry weight was only reduced at salinities above 5·5 mScm-1, although the daily dry matter accumulation by fruit, asa percentage of total dry matter accumulation, was increased.Salinity reduced the dry matter accumulation in the young shootproportionally more than in the fruit. Although the total plantCa content was reduced by 13% mS-1 cm-1, the Ca content of theyoung shoot was reduced by 16·6%, compared to 11% inthe fruit. Pruning fruit reduced neither plant dry weight norCa uptake. The growth of the remaining fruit, and to a lesserdegree of the young shoot, accounted for all surplus assimilates. Thus, fruit were the dominant sinks for assimilates whilst themature leaves were the strongest sinks for Ca. Nevertheless, the fruit sustained the capacity to import Ca better than theyoung shoot, when supplies of both assimilates and Ca were reducedby high salinity.Copyright 1994, 1999 Academic Press Cucumber, Cucumis sativus L., salinity, fruit pruning, dry matter and calcium  相似文献

The extents to which changes in specific root lengthand root: shoot ratio can compensate for the effects of lowN availability upon RGR are examined. Trifolium repens has two types of root, one derived from theseed and the adventitious roots derived from the stolon nodes. It has been suggested that these two systems have differentpotentials for supporting growth. This paper presents a comparisonof plants grown on single seedling or adventitious roots anddemonstrates that although the shoot: root ratios for the twotypes differ this may be explained by differing shoot morphologies.Comparison of the lamina: root ratios for the two types of plantproduced no statistically significant differences and it isproposed that the two types of root system do not differ intheir relationship with leaf growth. The effect of heat stress on processes related to carbohydratepartitioning was investigated in young bell pepper (Capsicumannum L. cv. Maor) plants in relation to abscission of theirreproductive organs at different stages of development. None of the reproductive organs abscised after 5 d in a normalday/night temperature regime (25/18 °C). With a temperatureregime of 35 °C day, 25 °C night, abscission occurredin only a small portion of the flower buds and none of the flowersand fruitlets. However, when temperatures in the day and nightwere reversed (25/35 °C, day/night) all the buds and someof the flowers abscised during that time period. The young fruitat the first node did not abscise under any temperature regime. The abscission rate of the flower buds was reduced under heatstress if the developing fruit at the first node had been removed. High temperature during either the light or dark periods reducedthe export of [14C]sucrose from the source leaf (fed for 48h with [14C]sucrose). Both heat stress and fruit presence reduced the relative amountof [14C]sucrose which was exported to the flower buds, flowersand roots. Likewise, these treatments reduced the concentrationof reducing sugars in the reproductive organs. Concomitantly, the heat stress and fruit presence on the first node reducedthe activity of soluble acid invertase in the flower buds andthe roots, but not in young leaves. Overall, the results show that heat stress causes alternationin sucrose distribution in the plant, but may also have specificeffects on metabolic activities related to sucrose import andutilization in flower buds and flowers which in turn may enhancetheir abscission. Maize (Zea mays L.) productivity under drought stress dependsto some extent upon a hybrid's capacity to produce and translocateassimilate to its developing kernels during the stress periodand/or after the stress is relieved. The objective of this studywas to evaluate differences in carbon and nitrogen accumulationand partitioning under drought stress among maize hybrids thatdiffer in yield potential and/or physiological metabolism duringreproductive development. The hybrids B73 x LH38, FS854, B73xMol7and US13 were subjected to drought stress from the 7th leafstage until pollination was completed, at which time the soilof the stressed plots was replenished with water. For d. wtand chemical constituent determinations, plants of each hybridwere harvested from the irrigated and drought stressed plotsat silking, mid-grain fill, and physiological maturity. Averagedover hybrids, vegetative biomass at silking was reduced 25%as a result of the drought stress treatment, with B73 x LH38and FS854 accumulating more total biomass during the later portionof grain fill than the other two hybrids under both soil moisturetreatments. At silking, the total non-structural carbohydratecontent of the hybrids' vegetative tissue was not changed asa result of drought stress, whereas their reduced nitrogen (N)contents were decreased by an average of 33%. B73 x LH38 andFS854 had greater grain carbohydrate and reduced N contentsunder irrigation and smaller decreases in those variables asa result of soil moisture deficit than did the other two hybrids. These results indicate that the greater drought tolerance ofB73 x LH38 and FS854 to stress imposed during vegetative andearly reproductive development resulted from their more activeN uptake and assimilation and sugar production during the laterportion of grain fill and from their more efficient partitioningof assimilate to the developing kernels. A field study was conducted as part of an ongoing effort tocollect data on patterns of leaf area development and dry matteraccumulation and partitioning among various plant parts duringgrowth and development of two taro cultivars. Plants were harvestedfor biomass about every 6 weeks during the growing season. Ateach harvest, plants were separated into various plant parts, and their dry matter content was determined. The first 80 dafter planting were characterized by low rates of dry matteraccumulation, with only leaves, petioles, and roots showingsubstantial growth. Afterwards, increases in total dry matterwere mainly the result of corm and sucker growth. Corm bulkingoccurred after the attainment of maximal leaf area indices. The absence of an optimal leaf area index for a longer periodof time may have prevented the realization of higher dry matteryields. The partitioning of dry matter to the corms of bothcultivars remained almost constant especially after 150 d afterplanting. This process was in contrast to the partitioning ofdry matter to the suckers, which increased significantly untilthe end of the growing cycle.Copyright 1995, 1999 Academic Press Taro, Colocasia sp., growth, dry matter partitioning  相似文献

The flowering mutant dn in sweet pea was used as a tool to study14C-assimilate and dry matter partitioning with respect to nutrientdiversion theories on the control of flower initiation. Wildtype plants (Dnh) are photoperiodic and exhibit late floweringand profuse basal branching in short days while mutant plants(dn) are day neutral, early flowering and devoid of basal laterals. In short days, dn plants exported a significantly greater proportionof assimilate acropetally than (Dnh) plants and the upper portionof dn plants had a greater dry weight. These differences werereduced dramatically when basal laterals were excised regularlyfrom the (Dnh) plants although the difference in flowering remained. However, the effect of dn on resource allocation within theapical region may be more important in regard to flowering thanthe effect on acropetal versus basipetal movement. In shortdays, the dn plants partitioned significantly more resourcesinto their internodes and petioles, and less into their leaflets, than Dnh plants as shown by dry weight and 14C-assimilate measurements. These differences were apparent from as early as node 7 up tothe node of flower initiation in dn plants (node 30) and theywere not eliminated by removal of basal laterals from Dnh plants.Differences between dn and Dnh plants in partitioning and floweringwere largely eliminated under long days. The fact that in thisspecies a single gene influences both resource allocation andflower initiation lends further support to nutrient diversionhypotheses on the control of flowering.
