Two new species ofAcer fossil woods,A. momijiyamense andA. Watarianum, are described and a short review of fossil wood of this genus from the Tertiary of Japan is given. In the course of a study on three fossil wood species which have been described asAcer andAcernium from Japan, it is noticed thatAcernium iwatense Watari does not belong toAcer but toPrunus of the Rosaceae, and is therafore transferred intoPrunus asPrunus iwatense comb. nov.  相似文献

A new fossil species,Hemiptelea mikii, is described on the basis of fruits from the Pleistocene of central Japan. It is distinguished fromH. davidii, the only extant species of the genus restricted to Korea and China, in having shorter fruits. Fossil woods discovered from the same horizon differ from the extant one in some anatomical characteristics, and are assigned to the new fossil species. Taken together with earlier records of fossil fruit occurrence in the early and the middle Pleistocene of central Japan, the latest finding of fossil fruits and woods from the last glacial sediments (ca. 50,000 years ago) at Kita-egota site of Tokyo suggests thatH. mikii was widespread in central Japan throughout the Pleistocene and survived until as late as the Last Glacial age.  相似文献

Silicified pinaceous leaves from the late Middle Miocene bed of Shimokawa Town, central Hokkaido, Japan are described asTsuga shimokawaensis sp. nov. Comparisons with leaves of extant species ofTsuga show that the new species is assigned to sect.Tsuga, resembling the extant speciesT. heterophylla in having usually one-cell-layered hypodermis, andT. sieboldii in having mesophyll cells between the resin canal and the hypodermis. From cladistic analyses we infer thatTsuga shimokawaensis is positioned the basal in sect.Tsuga and that sect.Tsuga comprises four species groups.  相似文献

Morphological characteristics of fossil bagrid catfishes from six Miocene to Pleistocene localities in Japan are described. A new species of the Middle Miocene bagrid,Pseudobagrus ikiensis, is described, based on five nearly complete specimens (ca. 19 cm SL) and one half-body specimen from the Chojabaru Formation (15 Ma) of the Iki Group in Nagasaki Prefecture. The species is diagnosed by a unique combination of characters: 14–16 anal fin rays, 44–47 vertebrae, deeply forked caudal fin, pectoral spines with serrations on the anterior edge and supraoccipital process extending to the first pterygiophore of the dorsal fin.Pseudobagrus ikiensis is morphologically close to the extantP. fulvidraco, which is widely distributed in China, Siberia and the Korean Peninsula, suggesting that both lineages had appeared by the Middle Miocene. All other fossil specimens are from the Pliocene (3–4 Ma) Ueno Formation (lowest Kobiwako Group, Ohyamada, Mie Pref.) and Tokai Group (Tsu, Mie Pref.), and Pleistocene cave deposits (Inasa, Shizuoka Pref., Mine, Yamaguchi Pref. and Kanogawa, Ehime Pref.). These are incomplete, comprising mainly dorsal and pectoral spines. Being indistinguishable from the extantP. nudiceps, they are thus considered to be included in that lineage. Although the geological distribution of these Plio-Pleistocene fossils nearly overlaps that of the extantP. nudiceps (west of the Suzuka Mountains), fossil specimens have also been found in the Ise Bay area (Tsu), whereP. ichikawai is the only extant bagrid, and further east (Inasa). Based on evidence that the latter is not a sister species ofP. nudiceps, the distribution of the fossils indicates that the range ofP. nudiceps was restricted to west of the Suzuka Mts. during the Pleistocene or Holocene.  相似文献

Phylogenetic analysis of morphology in Prunus reveals extensive homoplasy   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Prunus is a large and economically important genus with considerable morphological variation. The evolution of vegetative and reproductive characters are examined here by parsimony reconstruction on trees obtained from data of ITS, trnL-trnF, trnS-trnG, and 25 morphological characters of 37 species of Prunus and representatives of eight other genera of Rosaceae. Prunus grayana is supported as the sister species to the rest of Prunus and the common ancestor of Prunus is reconstructed as having deciduous and serrated leaves, leafy racemes and fruit with well-developed pericarp. All diagnostic characters used in classification of the raceme-bearing species show some degree of convergent evolution and do not reflect phylogenetic relatedness. Some character states, such as evergreen foliage and entire leaf margin, are likely adaptations to environments with higher humidity and mean temperature. However, these hypotheses need to be tested by including species formerly classified in genus Pygeum, which were not available for this study. A clade consisting of subgenera Prunus, Amygdalus, Emplectocladus and section Microcerasus (formerly in subgenus Cerasus) is characterized by having axillary buds organized in groups of three, two of which give rise to flowers or inflorescences and one to a vegetative shoot. Fruits with thin pericarps are common in Prunus but they arose more than once independently. Dry fruits also evolved more than once, and only in species of Prunus living in arid environments, suggesting that this feature is another example of adaptation. Maddenia hypoleuca is nested within Prunus and the morphological characters used to segregate it from Prunus have been misinterpreted or are also found in species of Prunus previously classified in genus Pygeum.  相似文献

Four collections of three species ofTrimenia and one collection ofPiptocalyx were studied; early-formed and later-formed wood was analyzed for oneTrimenia. Liquid-preserved material permitted analysis of mucilage and starch storage in wood ofT. neocaledonica andP. moorei. BecausePiptocalyx is scandent whereasTrimenia is arborescent, wood differences relative to evolution of a climbing habit could be examined.Piptocalyx contrasts withTrimenia in having wider vessels, more numerous per mm2, resulting in a conductive area five times greater per unit area than that of theTrimenia woods averaged.Piptocalyx has appreciably fewer bars per perforation plate and thus much greater conductive area per perforation plate than have the species ofTrimenia. Rays inPiptocalyx are much taller and wider than those ofTrimenia. Wood ofTrimeniaceae is highly primitive in its scalariform perforation plates, scalariform lateral wall pitting on vessels, relatively long vessels elements, and heterocellular rays. Imperforate tracheary elements are septate nucleate fibertracheids (or even libriform fibers) rather than tracheids, but loss of borders on pits (and thus lowered conductive function of the imperforate tracheary elements) can be explained by the development of these elements into starchstoring cells. Some fiber-tracheids inT. neocaledonica are enlarged mucilagecontaining cells. Details of vessel structure inTrimeniaceae are similar to those ofMonimiaceae (s. s.), but similarity to some other lauralean (annonalean) families may be found: in mucilage presence,Trimeniaceae resembleLauraceae rather thanMonimiaceae. Wood ofTrimeniaceae may be regarded as highly mesomorphic, corresponding to the moist habitats in which all of the species occur.  相似文献

Puccinia kraussiana, a rust fungus of Africa, was found in Taiwan for the first time in eastern Asia. It was parasiting on leaves ofHeterosmilax gaudichaudiana, on which all four stages were characteristically found. The host species,H. gaudichaudiana, newly added to the host range ofP. kraussiana, constitutes also a new entry to the phanerogamic flora of Taiwan.  相似文献

Summary We investigated effects of seed density, distance from parent, and habitat (woods, open field) on post-dispersal predation risk (chiefly by rodents) for seeds of Prunus virginiana (Rosaceae). Additional study of the habitat effect (woods, open field, treefall gap) was made with seeds of Prunus avium (Rosaceae) and Uvularia grandiflora (Liliaceae). Density of Prunus seeds (range 2–40 seeds/group) did not affect predation risk for individual seeds. Distance from parent plants did influence predation risk, which was greatest directly beneath parents. This distance effect primarily comprised a sharp drop in risk within 2 m of parents, a distance too small to generate a spacing rule for conspecifics. We found that habitat strongly influenced predation intensity. Rates of removal of Prunus seeds were higher in woods than in open fields, except when overall predation intensity was very low and no pattern could be discerned. Prunus seed removal rates were higher in closed woods than in treefall gaps. Consequently, a Prunus seed will more likely escape predation if dispersed to an open site. In contrast, Uvularia seed removal rates were higher in open fields than in woods but did not differ between closed woods and tree-fall gaps.Predation intensity was spatially patchy between and within experimental arrays, but was consistent over time at some specific points in space, possibly reflecting home ranges of seed predators.  相似文献

The genus Prunus contains the subgenus Prunus incorporating the European plums (section Prunus), the North American plums (section Prunocerasus) and the apricots (section Armeniaca). In section Prunus, there are approximately 20 species, which occur in three levels of ploidy, diploid ( 2n = 2x = 16 ) \left( {2n = 2x = 16} \right) , tetraploid ( 2n = 4x = 32 ) \left( {2n = 4x = 32} \right) and hexaploid ( 2n = 6x = 48 ) \left( {2n = 6x = 48} \right) . Despite a clear distinction between section Prunus and the other sections, phylogenetic relationships between species within the section are unclear. We performed a phylogenetic analysis on members of the section Prunus and three outgroup species using sequence data from four single-copy phylogenetically informative chloroplast DNA regions (atpB-rbcL, matK, rpl16, and trnL-trnF). After alignment, the analysed regions totalled 4,696 bp of sequence, containing 68 parsimony-informative sites and 14 parsimony-informative indels. Data were analysed using both maximum parsimony and Bayesian likelihood and phylogenetic trees were reconstructed. The analyses recovered trees with congruent topologies and similar levels of statistical support for relationships between taxa. They confirmed that species belonging to section Prunus form a monophyletic clade within Prunus. The section is resolved into four well-supported clades, which correspond to the geographical distribution of the species. The hexaploid species could not be resolved into distinct species clades but formed a well-supported group separate from the tetraploid species, highlighting the distinct evolutionary origins of the different polyploid groups. The close relationship between the hexaploids and Prunus divaricata, Prunus cerasifera and Prunus ursina indicates the former may have derived from an ancestor of P. cerasifera and its allies.  相似文献

In the diploid speciesP. prolifera, the evolution of autogamy has resulted in the presence of distinct selfing and outcrossing races. The change in breeding system toward autogamy is associated with a reduction in the size of floral features and a lower pollen production. The outbreeding populations have only been found in Greece, while the selfing populations have colonized much of Europe. The two races appear to be reproductively isolated from one another. —Petrorhagia sect.Kohlrauschia contains four species.P. glumacea is outbreeding and shows unilateral incompatibility with the small-flowered race ofP. prolifera and interfertility with the large-flowered race; althoughP. glumacea is sympatric with the large-flowered race, they do not appear to hybridize in the wild. Amongst the allopatric species, internal breeding barriers are also found. These may take the form of hybrid sterility or seed incompatibility.P. velutina is autogamous and reproductively isolated from all the other species of the section regardless of whether they are sympatric or allopatric. It is suggested that the evolution of autogamy has been an important factor in the spread ofP. velutina, the tetraploidP. nanteuilii, and the small-flowered race ofP. prolifera in Europe.  相似文献

Summary New intracellular bacteria were detected in the cytoplasm ofParamecium calkinsi andP. putrinum. Some of the bacteria were not evenly distributed in the cytoplasm of the host but were found in the center of the cell, eventually near the nuclei, but not in the cortex area, whereas another species was found in the cortex area. These peculiarities of intracellular bacteria localization in the host suggest that the conditions in various parts of the cytoplasm favor bacterial maintenance to different extent. Due to the results obtained by transmission electron microscopy and in situ hybridization using appropriate oligonucleotide probes, the bacteria, three or possibly four species, are Gram-negative and belong to the alpha-subgroup of proteobacteria. Bacteria from one stock ofP. calkinsi were found to be infectious for bacteria-free cells ofP. calkinsi andP. nephridiatum.  相似文献

Calcium oxalate crystal types and distribution within leaves ofPrunus sensu lato (Rosaceae; Prunoideae) were surveyed from mostly herbarium specimens (196 specimens of 131 species of all five subgenera usually recognized). Rehydrated samples were bleached, mounted unstained, and viewed microscopically between crossed polarizers. Six patterns were recognized based on crystal type and relative distribution around veins and in mesophyll. Druses predominate in four subgenera, but prismatics are most common in subgenus Padus. Prunophora and Amygdalus, considered to be the most advanced subgenera, have virtually only druses, which are almost always associated with veins. Cerasus and Laurocerasus, intermediate subgenera, have the greatest diversity of patterns, but few species with prismatics. A trend is evident from mostly mesophyll prismatics in Padus to fewer prismatics and more druses of mixed distribution in Laurocerasus and Cerasus, to mostly druses restricted to veins in Amygdalus and Prunophora.  相似文献

The new nameRuellia comonduensis is provided for the species previously known asR. cordata Brandegee.Ruellia chilpancingana, a new species known only from Guerrero in southwestern Mexico, is described and compared to morphologically similar species. It is unique among Mexican species ofRuellia based on the following combination of characters: caducous bracteoles and secondary bracteoles, multiflowered dichasia from leaf axils, yellowish and cylindric-funnelform corollas, exserted stamens, and few (four or fewer) seeds per capsule. Macromorphological features and pollen ofR. chilpancingana are illustrated.  相似文献

Self-incompatibility in the genus Prunus is controlled by two genes at the S-locus, S-RNase and SFB. Both genes exhibit the high polymorphism and high sequence diversity characteristic of plant self-incompatibility systems. Deduced polypeptide sequences of three myrobalan and three domestic plum S-RNases showed over 97% identity with S-RNases from other Prunus species, including almond, sweet cherry, Japanese apricot and Japanese plum. The second intron, which is generally highly polymorphic between alleles was also remarkably well conserved within these S-allele pairs. Degenerate consensus primers were developed and used to amplify and sequence the co-adapted polymorphic SFB alleles. Sequence comparisons also indicated high degrees of polypeptide sequence identity between three myrobalan and the three domestic plum SFB alleles and the corresponding Prunus SFB alleles. We discuss these trans-specific allele identities in terms of S-allele function, evolution of new allele specificities and Prunus taxonomy and speciation. The taxonPraeanthropus africanus (Weinert, 1950), represented by the Garusi maxilla, is valid and reinstated. The morphological pattern of the Garusi maxilla is not that of a primitive hominid, but of a relatively generalized pongid. Since the apelike lectotype L.H.-4 and paralectotype A.L.200-1a ofAustralopithecus afarensis Johanson et al. 1978 are conspecific withP. africanus, and originate from the same formation, they are reassigned toPraeanthropus africanus.  相似文献
