In South Africa, gracilarioid red algae have been collected as wash-up to be dried and sold for agar extraction for at least
50 years. Despite much research, there is currently no commercial mariculture of the algae locally although this has been
carried out in neighboring Namibia for a number of years. The industry is traditionally confined to Saldanha Bay on the west
coast, although small wash-ups of Gracilariopsis longissima have been collected in nearby St Helena Bay. In Saldanha Bay, wash-ups of Gracilaria. gracilis have been very sporadic over the last few decades, with human alteration of the bay configuration possibly responsible for
an initial major decline in 1974. This unpredictability in the amounts of wash-up has made the industry unstable and increasingly
unprofitable. We compiled the results of previous surveys (some unpublished) of gracilariod populations in St Helena Bay and
the Saldanha-Langebaan sytem, and re-surveyed these populations to examine long-term fluctuations. In Saldanha Bay and Langebaan
Lagoon, standing stock of G. gracilis was estimated at 538 tons fresh weight and 71 tons fresh weight respectively. Less than 4 tons of gracilarioids are estimated
to remain in St Helena Bay. We discuss the fluctuations in biomass and distribution of these South African gracilarioid populations. 相似文献

Trophic patterns of omnivorous freshwater shrimps, Exopalaemon modestus and Macrobrachium nipponensis, were investigated in two shallow eutrophic lakes by using stable isotope analysis. δ15N and δ13C of M. nipponensis and E. modestus increased with increasing body weight, which might be attributed to larger individuals ingesting organisms that feed higher
up the food chain and/or increased assimilation of benthic food items with enriched isotopic signatures. Of the freshwater
shrimps occurring in the studied lakes, those from Lake Taihu had significantly elevated δ15N and δ13C values (4.3‰ and 1.8‰, respectively) compared with those from the less eutrophic Lake Chaohu, indicating that the isotopic
signature might partially reflect the trophic states of their habitats. Mixing model results suggested that the benthic food
web provides the primary carbon source for both shrimp species, and that E. modestus assimilated relatively more pelagic food sources than M. nipponensis in these lakes.

Summary The effects of CO2 enrichment on the growth, biomass partitioning, photosynthetic rates, and leaf nitrogen concentration of a grass, Bromus mollis (C3), were investigated at a favorable and a low level of nitrogen availability. Despite increases in root: shoot ratios, leaf nitrogen concentrations were decreased under CO2 enrichment at both nitrogen levels. For the low-nitrogen treatment, this resulted in lower photosynthetic rates measured at 650 l/l for the CO2-enriched plants, compared to photosynthetic rates measured at 350 l/l for the non-enriched plants. At higher nitrogen availability, photosynthetic rates of plants grown and measured at 650 l/l were greater than photosynthetic rates of the non-enriched plants measured at 350 l/l. Water use efficiency, however, was increased in enriched plants at both nitrogen levels. CO2 enrichment stimulated vegetative growth at both high and low nitrogen during most of the vegetative growth phase but, at the end of the experiment, total biomass of the high and low CO2 treatments did not differ for plants grown at low nitrogen availability. While not statistically significant, CO2 tended to stimulate seed production at high nitrogen and to decrease it at low nitrogen. 相似文献

The two-phase dispersal event in which dung beetles move seeds after endozoochory is often assumed to be advantageous for plant regeneration. Because seeds are expected to end up in favourable and safe germination sites, it is considered as an example of directed dispersal. However, literature so far is restricted to tropical rain forest ecosystems, while data for temperate regions are lacking. In this study, the effect of dung beetles on seedling establishment of endozoochorically dispersed seeds is evaluated for a temperate grassland ecosystem. We performed a field experiment in which cages excluded dung beetles from horse and cattle dung samples with mixed-in grass seeds. Seed germination from these samples was significantly higher than that from samples which were accessible to dung beetles. This indicates that the effect of dung beetles on short-term seedling establishment was negative, which contrasts with the patterns found for large-seeded species used in tropical studies. This is most likely attributed to the lack of roller species and the larger depth at which tunneling Geotrupes species bury seeds. 相似文献

Previous studies have suggested that social interactions (e.g., the actions and reactions elicited by the interaction of co-specific individuals) induce individual fruit flies (Tephritidae) to ingest more food, especially protein-rich food. Changes in feeding behavior related to social interactions have been associated with reproduction (e.g., when different sexes are present), reproductive facilitation (e.g., when two females interact) and stress and aggression (e.g., flies of the same sex, or crowdedness). The present study investigated the effect of social interaction on the feeding, longevity and resource management of the Ethiopian fruit fly, Dacus ciliatus. Single flies and pairs of flies (of the same or different sexes) were confined to a small arena (the PUB system), in which we measured the amount of liquid food ingested daily by each fly. In addition, we sampled flies of different ages, extracted and quantified their lipid and protein contents, and related individual metabolic contents to the ingestion of a fructose and protein hydrolysate solution. Results showed that individual ingestion was significantly higher in flies maintained in pairs than in flies kept as solitary individuals. The highest intake rates were observed for the female–female pairs. In general, females ingested significantly greater volumes than males. Lipid contents tended to decrease progressively with age in flies kept as solitary individuals, especially in female flies, while lipid levels decreased and then increased in flies maintained in pairs. Protein trends were similar, although less pronounced than the patterns observed for the lipids. The flies kept as solitary individuals lived significantly longer than those kept in pairs. A resource-management analysis points to a decreased metabolic rate in flies kept as solitary individuals, as compared to paired flies. Results are discussed in view of theories of resource management and survival strategies. 相似文献

The lesser kestrel Falco naumanni experienced a marked decline during the second half of the 20th century due to changes in land use that influenced breeding
success by reducing the abundance and quality of prey. However, the factors governing spatial and temporal variation of prey
abundance around lesser kestrel colonies has not yet been investigated. We sampled Orthoptera abundance in the main crop types
and edge habitats surrounding six lesser kestrel colonies in southern Spain. Samplings focused on Orthoptera because they
constitute the main prey during the nestling period. Only those Orthoptera species that are known to be preyed by lesser kestrels
were considered in this study. We found differences in prey density among localities, and crop types. Semi-natural habitats
such as grasslands, fallow land, and field margins held the highest densities. However, prey abundance showed a complex pattern
that was not possible to explain solely on the basis of crop composition around colonies. Factors determining productivity
in individual fields like soil type and productivity or biocide input, and mean size of agricultural fields contributed to
explain this complex pattern of prey abundance. Our results highlight the key role of semi-natural and edge habitats in farmed
landscapes as prey reservoirs and corridors. Higher conservation priorities for these habitats are suggested to benefit foraging
lesser kestrels, but many other farmland species that also experienced steep population declines due to decreasing food supply

Summary Earlier studies showed that under natural conditions foreign pollen receipt is correlated with loss of seed set in populations of P. viscosum. Here, we report on experimental pollinations using foreign pollen from two co-flowering species that share pollinators with P. viscosum. Experiments were designed to ascertain whether improper pollen transfer causes reduced seed set under controlled conditions and, if so, to determine the stage at which interference occurs. In flowers pre-treated by pollination with either Mertensia or Castilleja pollen, adherence of subsequently deposited conspecific pollen grains was unaffected. However, conspecific grains had significantly lower germination and ovule fertilization success in flowers receiving foreign pollen than in controls. These results suggest that pollinator infidelity in high alpine plant communities can reduce female reproductive success of P. viscosum by inhibiting the performance of conspecific pollen grains. Negative effects of Mertensia and Castilleja pollen were comparable despite large interspecific differences in pollen grain morphology. Accordingly, susceptibility to foreign pollen interference appears to be an intrinsic property of P. viscosum that is not dependent on the unique structural properties of pollen produced by competitive species. 相似文献

Summary Using phosphotungstic acid and periodic acid/thiocarbohydrazide/silver proteinate (Thiéry test) aspects of polysaccharide ultracytochemistry were studied in the membranous ligule ofLolium temulentum L. Staining results are presented for all three tissues-abaxial and adaxial epidermes and mesophyll-but discussed only for the epidermes. PTA- and PATAg-staining of the adaxial epidermis suggested synthesis of a conjugated polysaccharide material in this tissue, its accumulation in the periplasmic space and its subsequent secretion to the outside of the ligule via gaps in the cuticle. Grass lignins are differentiated from other lignin types by containing relatively large amounts of p-coumaric acid (pCA) acylating the C-9 position of lignin subunits. In the case of a mature corn (Zea mays L.) stems, pCA constitutes 15–18% of a dioxane soluble enzyme lignin. The major portion of the pCA is specifically attached to syringyl residues. Studies with isolated corn wall peroxidases show that pCA readily undergoes radical coupling in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, whereas sinapyl alcohol radical coupling proceeds
more slowly. Analysis of corn wall peroxidases did not reveal specific enzymes that would lead to the preferred incorporation
of sinapyl alcohol as seen in other plants. The addition of ethyl ferulate, methyl p-coumarate, or sinapyl p-coumarate conjugates to a reaction mixture containing peroxidase, sinapyl alcohol, and hydrogen peroxide stimulated the rate
of sinapyl alcohol radical coupling by 10–20-fold. Based on spectral analysis it appears that pCA and ferulate radicals form rapidly, but the radical is readily transferred to sinapyl alcohol. The newly formed sinapyl
alcohol radicals undergo coupling and cross-coupling reactions. However, sinapyl alcohol radicals do not cross-couple with
pCA radicals. As long as hydrogen peroxide is limiting pCA remains uncoupled. Ferulates have similar reaction patterns in terms of radical transfer though they appear to cross-couple
in the reaction mixture more readily then pCA. The role of pCA may be to internally provide a radical transfer mechanism for optimizing radical coupling of sinapyl alcohol into the growing
lignin polymer. Attachment of some pCA to sinapyl alcohol ensures localization of the radical transfer mechanism in areas where sinapyl alcohol is being incorporated

In situ hybridization (ish) allows the visualization of gene expression in tissues at high microscopic resolution. Interference by plant tissue pigments
generally confers higher sensitivity to radioactiveish, relative to non-radioactiveish using hapten labeled probes. The increased resolution is partially due to image acquisition methods in radioactiveish experiments. However, radioactiveish has many drawbacks including short probe life, safety concerns associated with the use of radioactive materials, and slow
development of signal. In this report, we show how commercially available image analysis software can be used to extract data
from non-radioactiveish images to gain a substantial increase in resolution. We provide a comparison between detecting a probe (CELLULOSE SYNTHASE) that is expected to produce a consistent, detectable signal in all growing tissues with detection of a probe (LEAFY)that is expected to produce a signal only in specific tissues.

Biofuels demand is unquestionable in order to reduce gaseous emissions (fossil CO2, nitrogen and sulfur oxides) and their purported greenhouse, climatic changes and global warming effects, to face the frequent
oil supply crises, as a way to help non-fossil fuel producer countries to reduce energy dependence, contributing to security
of supply, promoting environmental sustainability and meeting the EU target of at least of 10% biofuels in the transport sector
by 2020. Biodiesel is usually produced from oleaginous crops, such as rapeseed, soybean, sunflower and palm. However, the
use of microalgae can be a suitable alternative feedstock for next generation biofuels because certain species contain high
amounts of oil, which could be extracted, processed and refined into transportation fuels, using currently available technology;
they have fast growth rate, permit the use of non-arable land and non-potable water, use far less water and do not displace
food crops cultures; their production is not seasonal and they can be harvested daily. The screening of microalgae (Chlorella vulgaris, Spirulina
maxima, Nannochloropsis sp., Neochloris oleabundans, Scenedesmus obliquus and Dunaliella tertiolecta) was done in order to choose the best one(s), in terms of quantity and quality as oil source for biofuel production. Neochloris oleabundans (fresh water microalga) and Nannochloropsis sp. (marine microalga) proved to be suitable as raw materials for biofuel production, due to their high oil content (29.0
and 28.7%, respectively). Both microalgae, when grown under nitrogen shortage, show a great increase (~50%) in oil quantity.
If the purpose is to produce biodiesel only from one species, Scenedesmus obliquus presents the most adequate fatty acid profile, namely in terms of linolenic and other polyunsaturated fatty acids. However,
the microalgae Neochloris oleabundans, Nannochloropsis sp. and Dunaliella tertiolecta can also be used if associated with other microalgal oils and/or vegetable oils. 相似文献

Predation has been assumed to be a necessary factor in the ten-year population cycle of the snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus) and Canadian lynx (Lynx canadensis). The UV-B-induced plant stress hypothesis, in contrast, predicts that hare performance, especially reproduction, is negatively related to sunspot numbers, because production of UV-B-protective phenolics in food plants in periods of low sunspot activity, when the ozone layer is thin, increases the availability of amino acids and reduces the amount of phenolics that protect against herbivores. In accordance with the UV-B-induced plant stress hypothesis, and despite the absence of predators that have been assumed to be necessary for hare cycles, mountain hare (Lepus timidus) populations in Norway fluctuate in close synchrony with snowshoe hare populations in Alberta and the Yukon, Canada. When adjusting for the phase of the hare cycle, the natality of snowshoe hare in Alberta 1962–1976 was negatively related to sunspot numbers with a time lag of two years. It is concluded that delayed responses to UV-B-induced changes in plant chemistry during the sunspot cycle is a possible cause of ten-year cycles of hares and other herbivores, for example grouse and forest moths. 相似文献

Summary The trifunctional TRP1 gene from Neurospora crassa (N-TRP1) was subcloned into the yeast-Escherichia coli shuttle vector YEp13 and expressed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The three activities of the N-TRP1 gene product were detected in yeast mutants that lacked either N-(5-phosphoribosyl) anthranilate (PRA) isomerase or both the glutamine amidotransferase function of anthranilate synthase and indole-3-glycerol phosphate (InGP) synthase. The protein was detected on immunoblots only as the full length 83 kda product indicating that the trifunctional gene product was expressed in yeast primarily in a fully active, undegraded form. By placing the subcloned N-TRP1 gene under the control of the inducible PHO5 promoter from yeast, the expression of all three activities was increased to more than ten fold that of wild-type yeast and the overproduced protein could be visualized by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of crude extract and Coomassie Blue staining. Using the expression system described the effect of selective deletion of regions of the coding sequence of the N-TRP1 gene on expression of the three activities was tested. Expression of either the F- or C-domains, catalyzing respectively the PRA isomerase or InGP synthase activities, did not depend on the presence of the other domain in the active polypeptide. Furthermore, normal dimer formation occurred with a protein active for InGP synthase in a deletion derivative lacking most of the PRA isomerase domain, ruling out the hypothesis that interaction between the active site regions for PRA isomerase and InGP synthase accounted for dimer formation in the trifunctional product.Abbreviations PRA

运用人工授粉、补充无机营养、去叶处理以及疏花处理研究了华北驼绒藜自然种群花粉和资源有效性对结实的影响,并进一步探讨了该植物的选择性败育现象和繁殖对策。结果表明:花粉来源而不是花粉数量对华北驼绒藜结实存在显著影响;同枝授粉结籽率和结实率均低于自然授粉,异株授粉则显著高于同枝授粉和自然授粉;异株授粉种子千粒重显著高于自然授粉和同株异枝授粉,极显著高于同枝授粉。华北驼绒藜结实存在资源限制,补充施肥提高了单枝开花数和结籽率。随摘除叶片数量的增加,结籽率明显降低,摘除叶片处理与对照之间均形成显著差异,摘除1/2叶、3/4叶以及去全叶处理使种子千粒重显著低于对照。人工疏花实验表明华北驼绒藜存在选择性败育现象。华北驼绒藜可根据花粉和资源的可利用性来调整性分配、授粉方式和结实以获得最大适合度,具有复杂的繁殖对策,表现出较好的环境适应性。 相似文献

Ungava Bay is ice covered 6–7 months of the year and evidence of ice scouring of seaweeds is extensive in the intertidal and
shallow subtidal. Maximum tidal amplitudes of 16 m, among the highest in Canadian waters, compound this impact. Despite this
level of annual perturbation, very extensive and dense beds of fucoids in the intertidal and laminarians in the subtidal are
common on the western shores of Ungava Bay. Ground surveys of 24 intertidal stations combined with satellite images delineated
82,000 tons standing crop of Fucus vesiculosus and Fucus evanescens in Payne Bay, of which 36,000 tons were considered harvestable. Subtidally, kelp cover reached peak biomass at 5–10 m consisting
of three primary species, Saccharina longicruris, Laminaria digitata, and Laminaria solidungula. In the area of Payne Bay, kelp beds of 100 ha were common, averaging 9–12 kg m−2 wet weight. The productivity of brown algae at these latitudes has been assumed to be low relative to southern latitudes.
Direct measurement of lineal growth indicates productivity is intermediate between arctic and temperate populations. The potential
for medium level industrial harvest exists under conservative management strategies within the constraints of subarctic logistics. 相似文献

In fission yeast (Schizosaccharomyces pombe) the homologue of the mammalian SUMO-1 ubiquitin-like modifier is encoded by the pmt3 gene. A two-hybrid screen using the telomere-binding protein Taz1p as bait identified Pmt3p as an interacting factor. In vitro experiments using purified components of the fission yeast Pmt3p modification system demonstrated that Taz1p could be modified directly by Pmt3p. The amino acid sequence of Taz1p contains a close match to the consensus modification site for SUMO-1, and a PEST sequence similar to those found in established SUMO-1 targets. Although previous experiments have identified an increase in telomere length as one consequence of the pmt3– genotype, we could not detect Pmt3p modification of Taz1p in protein extracts made from exponentially growing haploid cells or any effect of Pmt3p on the localization of GFP-Taz1p at discrete foci in the haploid cell nucleus. 相似文献

We investigated the relationship between the fruit phenology of Prunus jamasakura and the fruit-feeding period of the Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus). The purposes of this study were to determine (1) when bears feed on the fruit of P. jamasakura in relation to phenology; (2) whether ingestion damages seeds; and (3) how ingestion influences seed germination. We assessed
the relationship between the phenology of fruit maturation (size, sugar concentration, color, persistence, and germination
percentage) and the feeding period of bears in the field, as judged from bear shelves and claw marks. We also compared the
germination percentage of seeds ingested by captive bears with that of uningested. Bears fed on the fruit from days 50 to
66 after flowering, when most of the fruits were on the tree and became large, the germination percentage of seeds increased,
and the sugar concentration became high. Bears fed only on mature fruits and so obtained high-quality nutrients. Germination
tests showed that ingestion of fruits by the bears caused no physical damage to the seeds. Ingested seeds did not show a significant
difference in germination percentage from seeds, whose pulp was artificially removed. These results indicate that bears are
potentially effective dispersers from a qualitative perspective and, to some extent, from a quantitative perspective. 相似文献

During a six-year period, changes in the composition of dominant plant species of importance to foraging birds in a salt marsh on the Swedish west coast were followed inside and outside exclosures to document effects of grazing on herbage quality and seed production. Since marshes provide an important habitat for foraging geese and ducks, it was of interest to determine how cattle grazing would affect herbage production inAgrostis stolonifera andPuccinellia maritima and seed and root-tuber production inScirpus maritimus. Measurements of cover and height in permanent plots revealed that a wetter weather type favouredAgrostis, probably through reduced salinity, at the expense ofPuccinellia, which was the most favoured food of both cattle and birds.Agrostis out-competedPuccinellia when grazing pressure was low. Seed production inScirpus maritimus was reduced by cattle grazing, particularly whenPhragmites australis formed part of the vegetation. In the absence of cattle grazing, both herbage- and seed producing plants were gradually reduced, andPhragmites increased. Since high herbage consumption and high seed production are mutually exclusive, grazing rotation in combination with mowing is suggested as a management strategy. 相似文献
