The perch populations of all lakes sampled are characterised by high growth rates (l± 320–410 mm) and year-class instability. The concurrence of four year-classes (1970,1973,1975and 1976) in three of the lakes is good evidence for climatic control of recruitment. Poor recruitment in Rostherne Mere during 1973 is attributed to the effects of cannibalism. An increase in the growth rate of young fish (0+) in all lakes during 1975 and 1976 is noted. The relatively poor growth of perch in Rostherne Mere is a consequence of the low specific growth rate there during the first year of life. An outbreak of the 'perch-disease' killed most of the adult perch present in 1975 in Rostherne Mere.  相似文献

The growth of bream, Abrumis brumu (L.), in a gravel pit lake was considered to be good in 1982/1983 (Lx=663cm, K=0.105). Theadult breampopulationwasdominated by the 1973and 1976 year-classes. These year classes still formed most of the spawning population in 1987, but had grown very little (<2 cm) in the previous 5 years. In November 1987, 158 kg ha−1 of bream were removed from this lake and in I988 the remaining bream population showed an increase in growth (mean length by 2.7 cm and mean weight by 0.5 kg) and condition (1.87 in 1987 to 2.09 in 1988) in one growing season. This additional growth of an ageing stunted bream population is considered to be the result of an increased food supply after reducing the fish density.  相似文献

In this study we tried to develop a uniform method of sperm cryopreservation for four cyprinid fish species indigenous to Hungarian waters: the roach (Rutilus rutilus L.), the bream (Abramis brama L.), the silver bream (Blicca bjoerkna L.) and the barbel (Barbus barbus L.). The sperm was frozen in liquid nitrogen vapor in the presence of five extenders (350 mm fructose, 30 mm Tris, pH 8.0; 350 mm glucose, 30 mm Tris, pH 8.0; 300 mm sucrose, 30 mm Tris, pH 8.0; 200 mm KCl, 30 mm Tris, pH 8.0 and modified Kurokura's extender) and two cryoprotectants: 10% methanol (MeOH) and 10% dimethyl‐sulfoxide. The highest post‐thaw motility (roach: 77 ± 6%, bream: 77 ± 6%, silver bream: 67 ± 5%, barbel: 75 ± 6%), fertilization (roach: 84 ± 4%, bream: 83 ± 2%, silver bream: 63 ± 2%, barbel: 70 ± 4%) and hatching (roach: 74 ± 2%, bream: 67 ± 6%, silver bream: 54 ± 2%, barbel: 61 ± 4%) rates were found when either fructose or glucose extenders were used in combination with MeOH as cryoprotectant for all four investigated species. Strong correlations were found between post‐thaw motility of the sperm and fertilization or hatching rates, which indicates that motility can be used to predict fertilization success in these species.  相似文献

Age-composition, size-distribution, length/weight relationships and growth both in length and weight of bream stocks were studied on fishes collected in NE and SW basins of Lake Balaton during 1982/83. Stocks consisting of 10 to 12 age-groups were observed at the two lake areas. The linear growth and weight-gain in the SW-basin were annually faster than in the NE-basin, however, the growth of bream in Lake Balaton was slow as compared to that observed 10 years ago. Parallel with progressive eutrophication, the density of bream stocks increased by some 5–10 % especially at hypertrophic lake areas (SW) and consequently their growth was transformed to densitydependent. In the appearance of strong year-classes some cyclicism could be observed especially in the SW-basin.  相似文献

Formation of year-class strength of bream Abramis brama , the most abundant fish in shallow eutrophic Lake Tjeukemeer, was studied during a 14-year period. Although the size of the spawning stock of bream was rather stable during this period, analysis of length—frequency distributions indicates that it comprised only a few year-classes. The strength of a year-class was determined at a fork length of about 11 cm, at the end of the second summer. Mortality rates of fish larger than 11 cm were low (<50% year−1). As the number of fish at the end of the second summer was not correlated to the number of 0+ in the previous year, mortality rates during the second summer (ranging from 75.6 to 97.7% year−1) determine the final year-class strength. These mortality rates were positively correlated to the year-class strength of 2- to 4-year-old pikeperch. The abundance of this predator, therefore, is likely to be the most important factor controlling the year-class strength of bream.  相似文献

The abundance, structure, growth, and origin of clupeid populations in inshore waters of the west coast of Scotland were studied from April 1970 to October 1972. Clupeid populations in the area comprise mainly young fish. 0-group autumn-spawned herring, probably of Minch origin, move into the area about April and spring-spawned ones (Clyde origin) about June. The timing and the body length at which each group arrives in the area during the different years is the same. After the initial immigration, the distribution of both 0-group clupeids becomes localized.Herring populations in the sea-lochs and associated inshore waters are mainly 0-group fish, which are replaced each year by a new incoming brood. The sprat populations of the sea-lochs are dominated by the 0-group; in the more ‘open’ areas the populations comprise older individuals. Year-class distribution in the ‘open’ areas resemble that of the commercial fishery. The rate of increase of 0-group autumn-spawned herring is 3.68 mm/week and that of spring-spawned 0-group herring is 2.83 mm/week. The curves of growth of 0-group sprats of the 1970 and 1971 year-classes are different; the rate of increase in length, however, averages 3.55 mm/week for both year-classes and the differences are not significant. In sprats, after their first year of life a rapid increase in length takes place in the spring. This increase is thought to enable the majority of the population to reach the minimum size (88–90 mm) for initial gonadal maturation and thereby make them capable of reproducing in their second year of life.  相似文献

A survey was made of the parasites of 603 roach Rutilus rutilus (L.), 15 bream Abramis brama (L.), 201 perch Perca fluviatilis L., 30 pike Esox lucius L. and four eels Anguilla anguilla (L.) caught in the Shropshire Union Canal at Backford, Cheshire from December 1964 to August 1966. Twenty-seven species of parasites were found, 17 in roach, seven in bream, ten in perch, ten in pike and two in the eel. Two species of Protozoa, seven species of Monogenea, five species of Digenea, six species of Cestoda, two species of Nematoda, one species of Acanthocephala, two species of Hirudinea, one species of Crustacea and mollusc glochidia were recorded. The following parasites are believed to be new records for the British Isles: Henneguya oviperda (Cohn, 1895), Dactylogyrus suecicus Nybelin, 1936, D. wunderi Bykhovskii, 1931, Asymphylodora kubanicum (Isaichikov, 1923), and Philometra rischta Skryabin, 1917.
One table shows the species of parasites found, together with data on the site of occurrence in the host, and the percentage and intensity of infection of the fish. A second table compares the occurrence of the parasites in four other localities in the British Isles, Loch Lomond Scotland, Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake), Merionethshire, Rostherne Mere, Cheshire and the River Lugg, Herefordshire. A further column gives the normal hosts in the U.S.S.R.
A limited comparison is made of the numerical occurrence of six species of parasites in the canal, Llyn Tegid and Druzno Lake, Poland. It is concluded that unless relatively large samples of fish of all length groups are collected on a regular basis throughout the year such comparisons will have little meaning.
The concept of the characterization of parasite faunas is briefly noted. It is suggested that the high degree of host specificity shown by many of the species of parasites is evidence in support of the concept.  相似文献

Evidence is presented which supports the hypothesis of a seasonal migration between the North Sea and the western English Channel. Fish caught west of Britain have a different length composition and there is some evidence of a North–South migration. Analysis of stomach contents shows that the species is a plankton feeder. Data on seasonal growth in young fish show the growth-rate is most rapid between August and December; length-frequency distributions of two year-classes were bimodal. The use of the otolith burning technique revealed up to 35 check rings, as compared with the reported maximum age of 10 years. With the exception of ring numbers 1 to 3, it could not be established the rings were annual.  相似文献

The bream (Abramis brama L.) population of Tjeukemeer was studied for three successive years. The growth, condition, gonad development, diet and feeding conditions of the fish are described. Food competition for two years with the then abundant young planktivorous smelt (Osmerus eperlanus) and perch (Perca fluviatilis) resulted in a decreased growth rate, condition and gonad development of the larger bream. The biomass of chironomids was too small in relation to that of the zooplankton to be important for the bream population, although they were eaten more efficiently.  相似文献

The population of bream in L. Peipsi was studied with respect to age, growth rate, condition factor (according to Fulton) and length-weight relationship in 1994. That autumn the bream population in L. Peipsi consisted of fishes aged from 0+ to 15+. During the first year bream reached an average body length of 7.9 cm (the commercial legal size (30 cm) was usually attained by the end of the 5th–6th year. The condition of bream in this lake was above the average of Estonian lakes. The relatively good growth rate and condition of bream in the lake indicates that the waterbody is appropriate for this fish.  相似文献

In this study some comparative data on the growth rate and year class composition of roach in two Cheshire meres (Rostherne and Tatton) are given. The populations are characterised by year class instability and high growth rates, both of which are most extreme in Tatton Mere. The growth of roach in Tatton Mere is the highest yet recorded from Britain.
The concurrence of two (1969, 1973) strong year classes in both lakes, suggests that climate is an important factor which conditions year class strength. However, although there is some correlation between year class strength and the water temperature index (>14° C) the ultimate cause of year class variability remains obscure. There is no evidence to suggest that year class failure is due to parasitic infestation by Ligula intestinalis or to predation by perch upon roach fry. Year class failure may be due to the mortality of eggs related to the time of spawning. The observed difference in growth rate between the two populations may be attributed to a difference in density caused by the disparity of year class representation in Rostherne Mere and Tatton Mere. However, despite these differences, the net biomass achieved (36–39 kg ha−1) may be similar in both lakes. Superimposed on the effects of density an influence of temperature is noted.  相似文献

The development of cartilaginous structures in cultured sea bream Sparus aurata larvae and the timing of their ossification was studied. In cultivated sea bream larvae the first cartilaginous structure to be identified was hypural 1 at 4.1 mm notochord length ( L N). By 5.3 mm L N, prior to the onset of ossification, it was possible to distinguish the following cartilaginous structures: all 23 neural arches, all 13 haemal arches and two of the four pairs of parapophyses. The neural arches 1–4 and 15–23 were formed on the notochord and elongated dorsally, while neural arches 5–14 appeared on the dorsal side of the spinal cord and elongated ventrally. Initiation of ossification occurred at 5.7–6.0 mm standard length ( L S) when the cartilaginous ontogeny of the vertebral column was completed. Ossification was coincident with dorsal flexion at the posterior end of the notochord and occurred in a sequential manner: (1) dorsoanteriorly, the cartilaginous neural arches and the centra were the first structures to ossify; (2) ventrad at the centre, at 7.0–7.5 mm L S; (3) posteriorly at 7.1 mm L S the hypural complex and urostyle (24th centrum) were ossified; and (4) dorsad at the centre (neural arches and spines).  相似文献

Bream (Abramis brama) undergo ontogenetic diet shift from zooplankton to benthic macroinvertebrates, but the switching size may be highly variable. To unravel under what conditions bream are pelagic versus benthic foragers, we experimentally determined size‐dependent foraging capacities on three prey types from the planktivory and benthivory niche; zooplankton, visible and buried macroinvertebrates. From these data we derived predictions of size‐dependent diet preferences from estimates of prey value and competitive ability, and tested these predictions on diet data from the field. Planktivorous foraging capacity described a hump‐shaped relationship with bream length that peaked for small bream of 67 mm total length. Benthivory capacity increased with increasing bream size, irrespective if benthic prey were visible on the sediment surface or buried in the sediment. From the experimental data and relationships of metabolic demand we calculated minimum resource requirement for maintenance (MRR) for each of the prey categories used in experiments. MRR increased with bream size for both zooplankton and visible chironomids, but decreased with bream size for buried chironomids, suggesting that intermediate sized bream (120–300 mm) may be competitively sandwiched between small and large bream that are more competitive planktivores and benthivores, respectively. Prey value estimates and competitive abilities qualitatively predicted diet shift in a bream population being released from competition. Competitive release did not change the diet of the largest size‐class feeding on an optimal diet of benthic invertebrates both before and after competitive release. However, profound diet shifts towards benthic macroinvertebrates were recorded for intermediate size‐classes that fed on a suboptimal diet prior to competitive release. Thus, laboratory estimates of size‐dependent foraging capacity of bream in planktivorous and benthivorous feeding niches provided useful information on size‐specific competitive ability, and successfully predicted diet preference in the field.  相似文献

Measurements taken from a series of photographs of otoliths of 37 eels caught in a stretch of river of 150m length were used to prepare a growth curve based on back-calculated measurements. Values of L ∞= 1045 and K = 0.046 were determined. Mean incremental growth calculated as 33 mm per year agreed closely with increments determined from growth observed up to 4 years after tagging eels from the same location. Inconsistencies in results of age determinations based on burned otoliths are described but it is concluded that the technique yields results of sufficient reliability to be used in practical management situations.  相似文献

Sillago maculata is endemic to the east coast of Australia where it is harvested by recreational and commercial fishers; however, little is known of the important aspects of its biology and ecology to assist with fisheries management planning. This situation is redressed here by investigating aspects of the reproduction, age and growth of estuarine populations of S. maculata in south-eastern Australia. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) values indicated peak spawning occurred between September and February and that the estimated mean fork length at maturity (L50) was 14.6 cm for males and 15.2 cm for females. Females displayed an asynchronous pattern of oocyte development, with individuals probably spawning multiple times in a spawning season. A validated aging protocol using thin sectioned otoliths was used to estimate the age of fish. The maximum ages for males and females were 9.5 and 12.0 years, respectively. Growth differed between sexes, with males ( L ∞ = 24.04, K  = 0.70, t 0 = −0.09) attaining a smaller maximum length than females ( L ∞ = 25.01, K  = 0.72, t 0 = −0.04). The age composition of gill-net and beach-seine samples mainly consisted of individuals aged 2–4 years, and there was evidence of variable recruitment. Management implications are also discussed.  相似文献

Sixteen year-classes of longfin smelt, Spirinchus thaleichthys , show a consistent pattern of alternating year-class strength between even (strong) and odd (weak) years. A recent (1989) odd year-class grew as well as, if not better than, the late 1960s odd year-classes. However, fish in the even year-classes (1988 and 1990) were significantly smaller in size then the 1966 and 1968 cohorts. Associated with this reduction in growth of the even year-class fish is a decline in fecundity. Fecundity of the odd year-classes of smelt was also smaller than in the early 1960s. Mean egg diameter and gonadosomatic index were not statistically different between 1988 and 1989 year-classes but the relative fecundity was higher for the 1988 year-class than for 1989, suggesting a higher reproductive investment in the even year-class. Reduction in growth and associated reproductive traits is considered to result from a reduction in the abundance of mysids, a preferred prey species.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine if saddleback syndrome (SBS) in a wild population of yellowfin bream (Acanthopagrus australis) was the result of a developmental defect or caused by physical injury. Information was collected in 2012 on the incidence of SBS and other abnormalities in this species in Moreton Bay, Australia. Abnormalities in adult fish (>250 mm Total Length, TL) with SBS (n = 47) were compared with those without SBS (n = 30). A sample of juvenile fish (n = 404) was checked for the presence of SBS. The results show that scale loss, scale pattern misalignment, lateral line fracture and pectoral fin abnormality were closely associated with SBS. SBS was uncommon (<2%) in juveniles <70 mm TL, but common (>12%) in the larger juveniles (70–215 mm TL). These results, together with the findings that scale loss associated with SBS in adult fish occurred in the range 80–245 mm back‐calculated TL, indicate that SBS and the related abnormalities in yellowfin bream are a result of physical injuries to larger juveniles (>70 mm TL). The reduction in the incidence of SBS from approximately 12% in the larger juveniles to 5% in adults is evidence of mortality associated with SBS.  相似文献

The recruitment dynamics and life history of migratory brown trout, Sulmo trutta L., were investigated in a small Baltic coast stream subject to recurring drought. Spawning males consisted of both mature male parr (101–206 mm t.l. ) and migrant males (205–780 mm t.l. ). Spawning females were all migrants which delayed maturity until reaching a significantly greater size on average (424–805 mm t.l. ) than migrant males. Male: female ratios were very high in spawning aggregations (9–12 males: 1 female) with males representing up to five year-classes or more. Gametes from several generations of males per spawning event may be important for maintaining the genetic viability of this population with few female spawners per year. The amount of spawning was dependent on precipitation just prior to and during the spawning period since migrants could not enter the stream under drought conditions. Migrants did not overwinter in the stream.
Drought also caused variable fry mortality following emergence in early summer. Recruitment of 0+ parr in autumn varied from c . 175 to 3000 during 3 years. Smolts were relatively young (ages 1–2) and small (≥8 cm), and were significantly longer on average than sibling parr. Yet emigration of 1-year-olds was not related to 0+ parr size the previous autumn because of overlapping growth rates.
Persistence of the migratory brown trout in this unstable environment may be the consequence of (i) life history adaptation (e.g. short freshwater residence of both juveniles and spawners), and (ii) a complementary set of individual life histories where variation in age of migrant spawners and the occurrence of mature male parr result in a stable spawner population despite inconsistent recruitment of migrants to the sea.  相似文献

In a four year experiment (1988–1991) carried out in a shallow, eutrophic lake, an increase in young-of-the-year pike (Esox lucius) density was used to control planktivorous fish assemblages consisting mainly of small-sized cyprinids: roach (Rutilus rutilus), Leucaspius delineatus, and white bream (Blicca bjoerkna). Stocking with pike fry of ca 30 mm in three successive springs resulted in large-scale mortality among prey of vulnerable sizes. Rotenone treatment at the end of the fourth year showed that roach and white bream populations contained few 0+ to 2+ fish, but very high numbers of 3+ to 6+ fish. By this time, short-lived, slow-growing L. delineatus, with no size refuge from predators, had been driven almost to extinction.  相似文献
