Synopsis Tagged individuals of the Eastern Pacific sharpnose puffer, Canthigaster punctatissima, were studied at Punta Santa Inez, Baja California Sur. Territories were maintained by both sexes in this sexually dimorphic
fish. Male puffers appear to have harems; one large male interacts with one to four smaller females. Puffers from different
harems were not seen to interact except for occasional aggressive contact. Removal of a male puffer resulted in the overnight

Synopsis Social organization and spawning in the sharpnose pufferCanthigaster rostrataere studied on a reef in the San Blas Islands, Panama. Sexes were dimorphic. In mixed coral and rubble habitat, females defended territories against other females and small males. From one to six female territories were included within the territories of certain large males. These haremic males visited their females and patrolled their territories throughout the day. Smaller, non-haremic males occupied territories or home ranges within or adjacent to those of haremic males or were wanderers. Spawning between a haremic male and a territorial female occurred within the female's territory. The female prepared an algal nest into which demersal eggs were deposited. There was no parental care. Eggs were spherical, translucent, and measured approximately 0.66 mm in diameter. Larvae were about 1.4 mm TL and closely resembled those of other species ofCanthigaster. 相似文献

The spawning and subsequent copulating behavior of the elkhorn sculpin (Alcichthys alcicornis) were observed in an aquarium. Soon after the female was introduced into the tank, the male approached and initiated courtship behavior by unfolding all fins. Females which carried ovulated eggs eventually accepted the male and spawning progressed. Females which had not ovulated, repeatedly rejected the male’s advances. The onset of spawning in the female was indicated by fluttering of the pectoral fins and successive horizontal undulations of the posterior trunk which served to sweep the spawning site. The laying of several thousand eggs was preceded by the female taking several large inhalations of water through the mouth and a slight raising of the posterior trunk. The male continued various behavior related to courtship while the female approached spawning. After spawning, the female smoothed the egg mass into a thin layer by using the posterior trunk and anal fin. After spawning, and while the female flattened the egg mass, the male copulated repeatedly. No copulation was observed prior to spawning. Semen was observed to be emitted from the tip of the penis and to leak from the female’s genital pore. Eggs were fertilized externally by the emitted sperm in the case of females which had no prior copulating experience in the present breeding season. The entire reproductive behavior of the pair ceased, as the female left the spawning site after flattening the egg mass. The male remained near by, but did not aerate the eggs. During the breeding season, the area around the female’s genital pore and along both sides near the base of the anal fin became slightly distended and soft by the accumulation of a serous fluid. It is presumed that this edematous modification serves to flatten the egg mass for softness without crushing the eggs. 相似文献

Spawning of the hawkfish,Cirrhitichthys aureus, occurred repeatedly between a female and a male in the aquariums of the Marine Science Museum, Tokai University. The pair was collected from Suruga Bay by scuba diving and maintained for 50 days prior to spawning. In early September, 1979, the first successful spawning took place at 17:40 h after several repetitions of a courtship behavior sequence, which was initiated by the male. Spawning continued daily for 104 days between the two fish. Fertilized eggs were spherical, transparent and pelagic, and measured 0.75–0.78 mm in diameter. Hatching took place 19–22.5 hours after fertilization at 26.2–28.4°C. Newly hatched larvae, measuring 2.23–2.28 mm in total length, had a rather slender body with 12+18 = 30 myotomes and a large ellipsoid yolk sac. The front tip of the yolk sac protruded forward beyond the snout of the larvae. A single oil globule was situated in the front part of the yolk sac. The larvae were maintained for 4 days after fertilization. Larval characteristics ofC. aureus bore a close resemblance to those of other cirrhitid species especially in melanophore pigmentation along the dorsal and ventral surfaces. 相似文献

We present an individual-based model that uses artificial evolution to predict fit behavior and life-history traits on the basis of environmental data and organism physiology. Our main purpose is to investigate whether artificial evolution is a suitable tool for studying life history and behavior of real biological organisms. The evolutionary adaptation is founded on a genetic algorithm that searches for improved solutions to the traits under scrutiny. From the genetic algorithm's "genetic code," behavior is determined using an artificial neural network. The marine planktivorous fish Müller's pearlside (Maurolicus muelleri) is used as the model organism because of the broad knowledge of its behavior and life history, by which the model's performance is evaluated. The model adapts three traits: habitat choice, energy allocation, and spawning strategy. We present one simulation with, and one without, stochastic juvenile survival. Spawning pattern, longevity, and energy allocation are the life-history traits most affected by stochastic juvenile survival. Predicted behavior is in good agreement with field observations and with previous modeling results, validating the usefulness of the presented model in particular and artificial evolution in ecological modeling in general. The advantages, possibilities, and limitations of this modeling approach are further discussed. 相似文献

Energy is a variable of key importance to a wide range of research in primate behavioral ecology, life history, and conservation. However, obtaining detailed data on variation in energetic condition, and its biological consequences, has been a considerable challenge. In the past 20 years, tremendous strides have been made towards non-invasive methods for monitoring the physiology of animals in their natural environment. These methods provide detailed, individualized data about energetic condition, as well as energy allocations to growth, reproduction, and somatic health. In doing so, they add much-needed resolution by which to move beyond correlative studies to research programs that can discriminate causes from effects and disaggregate multiple correlated features of the social and physical environment. In this review, I describe the conceptual and methodological approaches for studying primate energetics. I then discuss the core questions about primate feeding ecology, social behavior, and life history that can benefit from physiological studies, highlighting the ways in which recent research has done so. Among these are studies that test, and often refute, common assumptions about how feeding ecology shapes primate biology, and those that reveal proximate associations between energetics and reproductive strategies. 相似文献

Synopsis From 1979 to 1981 we followed the movement, diet, and growth of yellow perch,Perca flavescens, for their first 70 days after hatching in Lake Itasca, Minnesota. Perch spawned inshore during early spring; hatching occurred 10–20 days after spawning. Newly hatched perch were 5.6–6.2 mm total length (TL). Soon after hatching the larvae moved into the limnetic zone where they began feeding. This movement is probably a mechanism to escape intense predation in the littoral zone. Normally the first food of perch was immature copepods, but within a week they incorporated all common zooplankters into their diet. When the perch reached 25 mm TL (about day 40) they returned to the littoral zone, where they ate larger and more abundant prey than was present in the limnetic habitat. There is no correlation between growth rates and zooplankton abundances, which suggests that food quantity is not a limiting factor in the early life history of perch in Lake Itasca. 相似文献

Post-hatching early life histories in Cretaceous Ammonoidea are discussed on the basis of density calculations of the shells in 71 species belonging to four separate suborders. The calculation was made under the assumption that a newly hatched ammonoid had a gas-filled chamber and a succeeding body-filled whorl terminating at the primary constriction. The results show that the density of the species examined at the hatching stage is almost constant and is relatively smaller than that of seawater, i.e. the animals are positively buoyant. This fact strongly suggests a planktic mode of life. In all species, the density increases gradually with growth and attains neutral buoyancy at 2.C2.5 mm in shell diameter. Thus, most ammonoids probably changed their mode of life from planktic to nektoplanktic or nektobenthic at this critical point. The rare occurrence of newly hatched specimens (ammonitellas) in many ammonoid assemblages may also support this interpretation. Planktic duration of a newly hatched ammonoid might be regulated by the animal's density at hatching, shell growth pattern, cameral volume (or hatching size), and rate of cameralliquid removal (or siphuncle diameter). Synopsis The spawning and nesting behavior ofEtheostoma (Boleosoma) perlongum was investigated in the field and laboratory. Sexual dimorphism is highly developed in such features as genital papillae, first dorsal and paired fins, and nuptial coloration. A reproductive migration from mid-lake to shore occurs in the spring: males precede females to select nest sites under submerged sticks and other debris. The male excavates a depression beneath the submerged object. Gonad analysis indicates a single spawning season extending from March through June. Nests were found from late April to mid-June and were guarded by a single male for periods of 13 to 36 days. Males initiate courtship by lateral display, lead the female to the nest site and show the nest by inverting. The female responds by tail up, tail wag and circle; males also tail wag and circle. Spawning pairs invert, usually in unison, and orient head to head or, less often, head to tail. The female deposits eggs while holding her body in a weak S or J shape with the caudal peduncle held away from the spawning substrate while vibrating. 相似文献

The early growth of the Pacific tarpon,Megalops cyprinoides, was studied by larval otolith analysis and rearing of larvae and juveniles in the laboratory. Morphology of the sagitta, validation of sagittal daily increments, age at the start of metamorphosis, decrement of standard length in early metamorphosis, and growth under rearing conditions are described. The sagitta of fully-grown Pacific tarpon leptocephali were transparent and circular, with regular intervals between the neighboring rings becoming wider at the onset of metamorphosis. Alizarin complexone treatment of larvae confirmed the daily formation of the sagittal rings. Metamorphosis was estimated to start about one month after hatching. After drastic shrinkage during the first several days of metamorphosis, the body length more or less stabilized for one month and then resumed rapid growth. Predator-mediated plasticity in morphology, life history, and behavior of Daphnia: the uncoupling of responses 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We studied the way 12 traits responded to fish kairomones in a set of 16 Daphnia magna clones derived from four different habitats-two where daphnids co-occur with fish and two without fish. These clones differed widely in their response to predator kairomones, with none of the clones showing a significant response in all traits and all clones showing a response for at least one trait. Most of the clones showed a significant response in one to four traits, with no evidence for an association between different traits. Clones from fish habitats were slightly more responsive to the presence of fish kairomones than clones from fishless locations. We conclude that most clones show an induced response to the presence of their predators (fish) but that there is a large genetic variability with respect to the traits for which clones show a response. Our results indicate that the major distinction is not between inducible and noninducible genotypes but rather that the genotypes differ in the combination of traits for which they show inducible responses. 相似文献

Do parasites affect the behavior of the Hawaiian white-spotted toby, Canthigaster jactator (Pisces)?
This study observed differences in behavior associated with parasites in the fish Canthigaster jactator. These fish were observed both within Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii, and just outside the bay. Normal (unparasitized) fish behaved similarly to their congeners. Behavior varied by size class and presumed sex. Larger fish (males) patrolled territories and courted medium-sized fish (females), which freely crossed male territories. Smaller fish appeared to be immature and remained in limited home ranges on the edge of male territories. All fish parasitized with a philometrid nematode acted most like immature ”normal” fish, with limited home ranges and few social interactions. However, parasitized fish ate at twice the rate of unparasitized fish. All fish collected from the bay contained some parasites, and none were sexually mature, whereas no parasites were found in fish from outside the bay. These data suggest that parasites affect the behavior of C. jactator. Moreover, parasites may limit the sexual maturation of their hosts. 相似文献

A mismatch in synchrony between male and female gamete release in external fertilizers can result in reduced or failed fertilization, sperm competition, and reduced paternity. In Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus), males can adopt either a guard or sneak tactic resulting in both pre‐ and postcopulatory competition between males with alternative reproduction tactics. Here, spawning behavior of free‐living Arctic charr was video‐recorded, and their reproductive behavior was analyzed. From evaluating 157 spawning events, we observed that females mainly spawned with a guarding male and that the female and the guarding male synchronized timing of gamete release under sperm competition. Although sneakers spawned with higher synchrony than the guarding male in single‐male spawning events, the average sneaker released his milt less synchronized with the female than the guarding male under sperm competition. Approximately 50% of the recorded spawning events occurred under sperm competition, where each event included an average of 2.7 males. Additionally, sneakers were more exposed to sperm competition than guarding males. An influx of males, in close proximity to the female, occurred during the behavioral sequences leading up to egg release, but this influx seemed not dependent on egg release, suggesting that something else than gonadal product attracts sneaker males to the spawning female. Just before and during the actual release of gametes, the spawning couple vibrates their bodies in close contact and it seems likely that this vibrational communication between the spawning couple, which results in a larger amplitude sound wave than seen under regular courting, reveals time of gamete release to sneaker males. Thus, vibrational communication may enable synchrony between the guarding male and the female, and this might be traded against the cost of higher detectability from surrounding sneaker males, eavesdropping in close proximity. 相似文献

Bacteria have had a fundamental impact on vertebrate evolution not only by affecting the evolution of the immune system, but also generating complex interactions with behavior and physiology. Advances in molecular techniques have started to reveal the intricate ways in which bacteria and vertebrates have coevolved. Here, we focus on birds as an example system for understanding the fundamental impact bacteria have had on the evolution of avian immune defenses, behavior, physiology, reproduction and life histories. The avian egg has multiple characteristics that have evolved to enable effective defense against pathogenic attack. Microbial risk of pathogenic infection is hypothesized to vary with life stage, with early life risk being maximal at either hatching or fledging. For adult birds, microbial infection risk is also proposed to vary with habitat and life stage, with molt inducing a period of increased vulnerability. Bacteria not only play an important role in shaping the immune system as well as trade-offs with other physiological systems, but also for determining digestive efficiency and nutrient uptake. The relevance of avian microbiomes for avian ecology, physiology and behavior is highly topical and will likely impact on our understanding of avian welfare, conservation, captive breeding as well as for our understanding of the nature of host-microbe coevolution. 相似文献

Explanation of the characteristics of the early developmental stage of organisms is an important problem in evolutionary biology.
In studies to date, evolutionary biologists have proposed some theories that successfully explain egg size variation. Mesoscale
water movements may transport early life stage organisms in the aquatic biosphere. We propose a novel biological view to explain
the duration of the retention period at the spawning ground and egg size variations in aquatic organisms with a planktonic
stage at least during the early part of their life history. We develop a life history model of the early life stage of such
aquatic organisms that takes into account their adaptations to water currents and biotic environmental gradients in the currents.
We hypothesize that the distance from the spawning grounds to the nursery grounds and the biological richness of the currents
affect the adaptive life history design of these aquatic organisms, including adaptive retention time at the spawning ground
and egg size. Various studies of fish biology describe in passing phenomena that suggest the validity of our deductions, but
explicit empirical attempts to evaluate our predictions in the field of evolutional biology are needed. 相似文献

Paternal effects on haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus early life history traits were examined by crossing eggs and sperm in a nested design and analysing the progeny at 0, 5 and 10 days post‐hatch (dph). The proportion of the variance in early life history traits that was due to paternity was significant for hatching success, larval standard length, myotome height, jaw length and yolk size, but not eye diameter or yolk utilization efficiency. Some morphological traits were influenced more by paternity than maternity. The findings suggest that the importance of males in the early life history success of marine fishes be reconsidered. 相似文献
