To characterize the effects of daytime exercise on subsequent overnight growth hormone (GH) secretion and elimination dynamics, serum was sampled, and GH was measured every 10 min for 12 h (1800 to 0600) in a control (CON) condition and after a 50-set resistance exercise protocol (EX) from 1500 to 1700. GH was measured with a conventional immunoreactive (IR) and an immunofunctional (IF) assay, and values were analyzed via a multi-parameter deconvolution analysis. EX resulted in a higher overnight secretory burst frequency [CON: 7.6 (SD 2.4) < EX: 9.4 (2.2) bursts per 12 h, P = 0.005] but lower mean burst mass [CON: 9.2 (4.7) > EX: 6.0 (2.9) microg/l, P = 0.019] and secretory rate [CON: 0.68 (0.29) > EX: 0.48 (0.23) microg/l/min; P = 0.015; ANOVA main effect means presented]. Approximate entropy (ApEn) was greater after EX, indicating a less orderly GH release process than CON. The estimated half-life of IF GH was significantly lower than IR GH [IF: 15.3 (1.1) < IR 19.8 (1.6) min, P < 0.001] but similar between the CON and EX conditions (approximately 17 min). Despite the changes in secretory dynamics, 12-h mean and integrated GH concentrations were similar between conditions. The results suggest that although quantitatively similar total amounts of GH are secreted overnight in CON and EX conditions, resistance exercise alters the dynamics of secretion by attenuating burst mass and amplitude yet increasing burst frequency.  相似文献

Ships are operated around the clock using rapidly rotating shift schedules called sea watch systems. Sea watch systems may cause fatigue, in the same way as other irregular working time arrangements. The present study investigated subjective sleepiness and sleep duration in connection with a 6 h on/6 h off duty system. The study was performed in a bridge simulator, very similar to those found on ships. Twelve officers divided into two groups participated in the study that lasted 66 h. Half of the subjects started with the 06:00–12:00 h watch and the other half with the 12:00–18:00 h watch. The subjects alternated between off‐duty and on‐duty for the remainder of the experimental period. Approximately halfway through the experiment, the 12:00–18:00 h watch was divided into two 3 h watches/off‐duty periods. The effect of this was to reverse the on‐duty/off‐duty pattern between the two groups. This enabled all subjects to work the four possible watches (00:00–06:00 h, 06:00–12:00 h, 12:00–18:00 h, and 18:00–24:00 h) in an order that was essentially counterbalanced between groups. Ratings of sleepiness (Karolinska Sleepiness Scale; KSS) were obtained every 30 min during on‐duty periods and if subjects were awake during off‐duty periods. The subjectively rated duration of sleep was recorded after each off‐duty period that preceded watch periods when KSS was rated. The results showed that the average level of sleepiness was significantly higher during the 00:00–06:00 h watch compared to the 12:00–18:00 h and 18:00–24:00 h watches, but not to the 06:00–12:00 h watch. Sleepiness also progressed significantly from the start toward the end of each watch, with the exception of the 06:00‐12:00 h watch, when levels remained approximately stable. There were no differences between groups (i.e., the order between watches). Sleep duration during the 06:00–12:00 h off‐duty period (3 h 29 min) was significantly longer than during the 12:00–18:00 h period (1 h 47 min) and the 18:00–24:00 h period (2 h 7 min). Sleep during the 00:00–06:00 h period (4 h 23 min) was longer than all sleep periods except the 06:00–12:00 h period. There were no differences between groups. In spite of sufficient opportunities for sleep, sleep was on the average around 1–1 h 30 min shorter than the 7–7 h 30 min that is considered “normal” during a 24 h period. This is probably a consequence of the difficulty to sleep during daytime due to the alerting effects of the circadian rhythm. Also, sleepiness during the night and early mornings reached high levels, which may be explained by a combination of working close to or during the circadian trough of alertness and the relatively short sleep periods obtained. An initial suppression of sleepiness was observed during all watches, except for the 06:00–12:00 h watch. This suppression may be explained by the “masking effect” exerted by the relative high levels of activity required when taking over the responsibility of the ship. Toward the end of watches, the levels of sleepiness progressively increased to relatively high levels, at least during the 00:00–06:00 h watch. Presumably, initially high levels of activity are replaced by routine and even boredom.  相似文献

Proteins are released from cells by different secretory pathways. The secretory pathway via the ER-Golgi route - realized by a signal sequence - is referred to as “classical secretion”. In contrast, alternative secretory pathways were summarized as “unconventional protein secretion”. Until now, unconventional protein secretion was lacking attention due to the absence of detailed mechanistic insight and limited experimental access. However, there is a growing number of experimental data showing that a large proportion of secreted proteins is released by these alternative routes. Secretomics - the analysis of all secreted proteins of a cell population - offers the opportunity to gain more functional insight into unconventional protein secretion. Several pitfalls in secretome analysis starting with the analyzed cell model and sample preparation to data analysis have to be considered for detailed characterization of the secretome. Here, we highlight the investigation of secretomes by quantitative LC-MS/MS analysis and discuss pitfalls and opportunities in the characterization of unconventionally secreted proteins by secretome analysis.  相似文献

To investigate the effect of recombinant bovine somatotrophin (rGH) on ovarian folliculogenesis in sheep, 18 mature Scottish Blackface ewes were assigned randomly to two treatment groups. Starting from day 5 of the synchronised oestrous cycle, animals were injected daily with either vehicle (control group) or 12.5 mg rGH (rGH-treated group) for 7 days. Blood samples were collected once daily during the experimental period for the measurement of growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), insulin, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinising hormone (LH) and progesterone. At the end of treatment animals were killed and ovaries collected. All follicles at least 1.0 mm in diameter were dissected out and diameters measured to assess follicular populations for individual animals. Five small follicles (1.0–3.4 mm in diameter) and all the large follicles (at least 3.5 mm) from each animal were incubated in 1 ml of Medium 199 for 1 h. Medium was then changed and incubation continued for a further hour. All medium samples were assayed for IGF-I, oestradiol, testosterone and progesterone.Treatment of ewes with rGH had no effect on the total number of follicles at least 1.0 mm in diameter (control, 34.4 ± 2.6; rGH-treated, 31.3 ± 1.4; P > 0.2). However, when follicles were further classified into different size categories (1.0–2.0, 2.1–3.0, 3.1–4.0, 4.1–5.0, 5.1–6.0 and over 6.0 mm in diameter), the population of follicles 2.1–3.0 mm in diameter was significantly increased by rGH treatment (control, 9.2 ± 0.7; rGH-treated, 13.8 ± 1.1; P = 0.02). The number of follicles of 3.1–4.0 mm diameter in the rGH-treated group tended to be increased (P = 0.09), whilst the population of follicles 1.0–2.0 mm in diameter was reduced (P = 0.07). Treatment of ewes with rGH significantly increased peripheral concentrations of GH (P < 0.01), IGF-I (P < 0.01), insulin (P < 0.01) and progesterone (P < 0.05). There was no effect of rGH treatment on circulating concentrations of FSH and LH. Both large and small follicles from rGH-treated ewes secreted significantly (P < 0.001) more IGF-I (37.8 ± 2.2 ng ml h−1, n = 50) than follicles from the control group (26.7 ± 1.6 ng ml−1 h−1, n = 73). However, there was no significant effect of rGH treatment on the secretion of oestradiol, testosterone and progesterone by either large or small follicles.It is concluded that treatment of mature ewes with rGH can enhance the development of ovarian follicles to the gonadotrophin-dependent stages. Furthermore, rGH appears to act through increased secretion of ovarian IGF-I, as well as increased peripheral concentrations of IGF-I and insulin.  相似文献

Mental stress consistently induces a pressor response that is often accompanied by a paradoxical increase of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA). The purpose of the present study was to evaluate sympathetic baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) by examining the relations between spontaneous fluctuations of diastolic arterial pressure (DAP) and MSNA. We hypothesized that sympathetic BRS would be attenuated during mental stress. DAP and MSNA were recorded during 5 min of supine baseline, 5 min of mental stress, and 5 min of recovery in 32 young healthy adults. Burst incidence and area were determined for each cardiac cycle and placed into 3-mmHg DAP bins; the slopes between DAP and MSNA provided an index of sympathetic BRS. Correlations between DAP and MSNA were strong (> 0.5) during baseline in 31 of 32 subjects, but we evaluated the change in slope only for those subjects maintaining a strong correlation during mental stress (16 subjects). During baseline, the relation between DAP and MSNA was negative when expressed as either burst incidence [slope = -1.95 ± 0.18 bursts·(100 beats)?1)·mmHg?1; r = -0.86 ± 0.03] or total MSNA [slope = -438 ± 91 units·(beat)?1 mmHg?1; r = -0.76 ± 0.06]. During mental stress, the slope between burst incidence and DAP was significantly reduced [slope = -1.14 ± 0.12 bursts·(100 beats)?1·mmHg?1; r = -0.72 ± 0.03; P < 0.01], indicating attenuation of sympathetic BRS. A more detailed analysis revealed an attenuation of sympathetic BRS during the first 2 min of mental stress (P < 0.01) but no change during the final 3 min of mental stress (P = 0.25). The present study demonstrates that acute mental stress attenuates sympathetic BRS, which may partially contribute to sympathoexcitation during the mental stress-pressor response. However, this attenuation appears to be isolated to the onset of mental stress. Moreover, variable MSNA responses to mental stress do not appear to be directly related to sympathetic BRS.  相似文献

Owing to the increasing popularity of skiing and the upslope movement of the snow reliability line in mountain regions, more and more alpine environments are being turned into skiing areas, with strong impacts on ecosystem functions and biodiversity. Creation and management of ski slopes cause physical disturbance to soil and vegetation, while (artificial) snow supplements affect soil structure, chemistry, moisture and temperature regimes as well as shifts in snow season and growing season length. Vegetation–soil feedbacks may influence the outcome of these interactive effects on soil and vegetation, with possible consequences for soil erosion. Moreover, climate warming will lead to changing snow cover and duration, which will interact with ski slope management effects on soil and vegetation and its feedbacks. Based on a conceptual framework we review the main elements of these interactive effects on soil and vegetation on new and established ski slopes. We also set a research agenda with specific studies that could further advance our understanding of interacting ski slope management, winter climate, vegetation–soil feedbacks and ecosystem functioning. In such new investigations, alpine climate change ecology can probably learn much from the “experimental” disturbance and snow manipulations on ski slopes and vice versa.  相似文献

In our previous studies we had demonstrated that, in children affected with isolated GH deficiency (IGHD), a short-term recombinant growth hormone (rGH) therapy increases the 11-deoxycortisol (S) secretion and induces an IGF-I responsiveness to the ACTH challenge. The aim of the present study was to further investigate the mechanisms by which IGF-I is secreted after ACTH challenge in children affected with IGHD by correlating IGF-I versus cortisol (F) time courses after ACTH administration. Ten children affected with IGHD were subjected to rGH therapy (4 IU/day subcutaneously) for 10 days. The responsiveness of IGF-I, F and S to the ACTH 1-17 test were evaluated before and at the end of the therapy. No IGF-I response to the ACTH test was recorded in the patients before the rGH treatment, whereas after rGH administration ACTH induced a significant IGF-I release (p < 0.001) which started at the 1st hour, reached a peak value between the 5th and 6th hours and disappeared at the 10th hour. In conclusion, our study confirms that a short-term rGH therapy induces an IGF-I responsiveness to ACTH and helps to better define the kinetics and the mechanism of this IGF-I response to ACTH.  相似文献

To determine whether the high ovulation rate of the Booroola Merino ewe could be explained by FSH metabolism we have tested the proposition that FSH may have a longer half-life in the plasma of Booroola Merino ewes than in control ewes. The half-life of plasma FSH was determined by removal of the pituitary gland, to abolish FSH secretion into the peripheral circulation, and monitoring by repeated blood sampling the subsequent decline in plasma FSH concentrations. The half-life of FSH was similar in Booroola (103 +/- 14 (s.e.m.) min, N = 8) and control (116 +/- 8 min, N = 9) ewes. However, when ewes that had been ovariectomized at least 6 months earlier were hypophysectomized, the half-life of FSH was increased from 110 + 8 min in ovary-intact ewes (N = 11) to 1101 +/- 49 min (N = 6) (P less than 0.001) with no difference between the two Merino strains. We conclude that changes in the circulating half-life of FSH do not account for the high fecundity of the Booroola but that ovariectomy can alter the half-life of FSH secreted by the pituitary gland.  相似文献

The diurnal flight pattern of Platypus koryoensis (Murayama) was examined using sticky traps attached to the trunks of oak trees in central Korea in 2010 and 2011. The flight activities of the beetle were estimated on the basis of 3-h intervals for trap catches from 11:00 to 14:00 on the next day, on June 25–26 and July 1–2, 2010, and on the basis of 2-h intervals for trap catches from 5:00 to 17:00, between June 9 and July 21, 2011 (the peak flight period of the beetle). Over 77% of the beetles were caught from 9:00 to 13:00, with the daily variations in the facing slope. The beetles began to be caught when the air temperature reached around 16 °C, and were the most active when the temperature ranged from 20 to 27 °C. No beetles were caught during rainfall, suggesting that rainfall is one of the factors that hinder beetle flight. The beetles were caught by traps in the east-facing plot earlier than those in the south- and west-facing plots suggesting that the flight behavior of the beetle can be affected by the light. Direction of the beetle flight during the peak of daily flight (from 09:00 to 13:00) was downward along the slope.  相似文献

The diurnal light cycle has a crucial influence on all life on earth. Unfortunately, modern society has modified this life-governing cycle by stressing maximum production and by giving insufficient attention to the ecological balance and homeostasis of the human metabolism. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of exposure or lack of exposure to natural light in a rest/activity rhythm on cortisol and melatonin levels, as well as on psychological variables in humans under natural conditions. This is a cross-sectional study. The subjects were allocated split into two groups according to their workspace (10 employees in the “with window” group and 10 in the “without window” group). All participants were women and wore anactigraph (Actiwatch 2, Philips Respironics), which measures activity and ambient light exposure, for seven days. Concentrations of melatonin and cortisol were measured from the saliva samples. Participants were instructed to collect saliva during the last day of use of the actigraph at 08:00 am, 4:00 pm and 10:00 pm. The subjects answered the Self-Reporting Questionnaire-20 (SRQ-20) to measure the presence of minor psychiatric disorders; the Montgomery-Asberg (MA) scale was used to measure depression symptoms, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire (PSQI) was used to evaluate the quality of sleep. The Rayleigh analysis indicates that the two groups, “with window” an d “without window”, exhibited similar activities and light acrophases. In relation to light exposure, the mesor was significantly higher (t?=??2.651, p?=?0.023) in t he “with window” group (191.04?±?133.36) than in the “without window” group (73.8?±?42.05). Additionally, the “with window” group presented the highest amplitude of light exposure (298.07?±?222.97). Cortisol levels were significantly different between the groups at 10:00 pm (t?=?3.009, p?=?0.008; “without window” (4.01?±?0.91) “with window” (3.10?±?0.30)). In terms of the melatonin levels, the groups differed at two different times of day: 08:00 am (t?=?2.593, p?=?0.018) and 10:00 pm (t?=??2.939, p?=?0.009). The “with window” group had a lower melatonin level at 08:00 am (3.54?±?0.60) but a higher level at 10:00 pm (24.74?±?4.22) than the “without window” group. Higher cortisol levels were positively correlated with minor psychiatric disorders and depressive symptoms (MA) at 10:00 pm. Lower melatonin levels at 10:00 pm were correlated with depressive symptoms and poor quality of sleep (PSQI). Our study demonstrated that not only may light pollution affect human physiology but also lack of exposure to natural light is related to high levels of cortisol and lower levels of melatonin at night, and these, in turn, are related to depressive symptoms and poor quality of sleep.  相似文献

Protein secretions from individual cells create spatially and temporally varying concentration profiles in the extracellular environment, which guide a wide range of biological processes such as wound healing and angiogenesis. Fluorescent and colorimetric probes for the detection of single cell secretions have time resolutions that range from hours to days, and as a result, little is known about how individual cells may alter their protein secretion rates on the timescale of minutes or seconds. Here, we present a label-free technique based upon nanoplasmonic imaging, which enabled the measurement of individual cell secretions in real time. When applied to the detection of antibody secretions from single hybridoma cells, the enhanced time resolution revealed two modes of secretion: one in which the cell secreted continuously and another in which antibodies were released in concentrated bursts that coincided with minute-long morphological contractions of the cell. From the continuous secretion measurements we determined the local concentration of antibodies at the sensing array closest to the cell and from the bursts we estimated the diffusion constant of the secreted antibodies through the extracellular media. The design also incorporates transmitted light and fluorescence microscopy capabilities for monitoring cellular morphological changes and intracellular fluorescent labels. We anticipate that this technique can be adapted as a general tool for the quantitative study of paracrine signaling in both adherent and nonadherent cell lines.  相似文献

The different molecular weight forms of immunoreactive growth hormone (irGH) secreted by the anterior pituitary of rats were evaluated during basal and stimulated secretion in vitro and in vivo. Anterior pituitary cells maintained in a monolayer culture system secreted only a 22,000-Da form of GH based on Sephacryl S-200 column chromatography. This was also true for the irGH secreted in response to growth hormone-releasing factor and prostaglandin E2 stimulation. In contrast, the molecular weight forms of irGH found in plasma under basal conditions included an approximately 90,000-Da form as well as the expected 22,000-Da form. The concentrations of both forms increased following growth hormone-releasing factor stimulation although there was a shift in the ratio of the forms secreted. These results suggest that the larger molecular weight forms of rat GH observed in plasma may be the result of some postsecretory process which occurs in blood and suggests a possible regulatory function for the larger molecular weight forms as it pertains to the bioavailability of GH in vivo.  相似文献

The cost-efficient degradation of xylan to fermentable sugars is of particular interest in second generation bioethanol production, feed, food, and pulp and paper industries. Multiple potentially secreted enzymes involved in polysaccharide deconstruction are encoded in the genome of Paenibacillus sp. A59, a xylanolytic soil bacterium, such as three endoxylanases, seven GH43 β-xylosidases, and two GH30 glucuronoxylanases. In secretome analysis of xylan cultures, ten glycoside hydrolases were identified, including the three predicted endoxylanases, confirming their active role. The two uni-modular xylanases, a 32-KDa GH10 and a 20-KDa GH11, were recombinantly expressed and their activity on xylan was confirmed (106 and 85 IU/mg, respectively), with differences in their activity pattern. Both endoxylanases released mainly xylobiose (X2) and xylotriose (X3) from xylan and pre-treated biomasses (wheat straw, barley straw, and sweet corn cob), although only rGH10XynA released xylose (X1). rGH10XynA presented optimal conditions at pH 6, with thermal stability at 45–50 °C, while rGH11XynB showed activity in a wider range of pH, from 5 to 9, and was thermostable only at 45 °C. Moreover, GH11XynB presented sigmoidal kinetics on xylan, indicating possible cooperative binding, which was further supported by the structural model. This study provides a detailed analysis of the complete set of carbohydrate-active enzymes encoded in Paenibacillus sp. A59 genome and those effectively implicated in hemicellulose hydrolysis, contributing to understanding the mechanisms necessary for the bioconversion of this polysaccharide. Moreover, the two main free secreted xylanases, rGH10XynA and rGH11XynB, were fully characterized, supporting their potential application in industrial bioprocesses on lignocellulosic biomass.  相似文献

Changes in rectal temperature during mild exercise in the middle of the rising (11:00 h) and falling (23:00 h) phases of the circadian rhythm of resting core temperature have been compared. Seven healthy males were studied at rest, while exercising on a cycle ergometer (60 min at 80 W), and during the first 30 min of recovery. Rectal temperature, forearm blood flow, and forearm sweat rate were measured at 1 min intervals throughout. During exercise, there were significant time‐of‐day differences in the profiles of all three variables, and in the thresholds for increases in forearm blood flow and sweating. Forearm blood flow and sweat rate were recruited more rapidly and to a greater extent with evening exercise, and rectal temperature rose less. Analysis of covariance, with rectal temperature as the covariate, indicated the associations between it and forearm blood flow or sweating were significantly different (p<0.05) between the two times of day. There were also significant (p<0.05) time‐of‐day effects for forearm blood flow and sweating that were independent of rectal temperature. During recovery, rectal temperature fell more quickly in the late evening than late morning. Forearm blood flow and sweating also showed time‐of‐day differences, but these did not co‐vary with rectal temperature. Control of rectal temperature during exercise and recovery appears to be more effective in the late evening than late morning, and differences in forearm blood flow and sweating, as well as factors independent of these two variables, contribute to this difference. The results support our “heat‐gain/heat‐loss modes” hypothesis.  相似文献

Effects of large mammalian herbivores on woody vegetation tend to be heterogeneous in space and time, but the factors that drive such heterogeneity are poorly understood. We examined the influence of fine‐scale habitat heterogeneity on the distribution and browsing effects of two of the largest African terrestrial mammals, the elephant and giraffe. We conducted this study within a 120‐ha (500 x 2,400 m) ForestGEO long‐term vegetation monitoring plot located at Mpala Research Center, Kenya. The plot traverses three distinct topographic habitats (“plateau,” “steep slopes,” and “valley”) with contrasting elevation, slope, soil properties, and vegetation composition. To quantify browsing damage, we focused on Acacia mellifera, a palatable tree species that occurs across the three habitat categories. Overall tree density, species richness, and diversity were highest on the steep slopes and lowest on the plateau. Acacia mellifera trees were tallest and had the lowest number of stems per tree on the steep slopes. Both elephant and giraffe avoided the steep slopes, and their activity was higher during the wet season than during the dry season. Browsing damage on Acacia mellifera was lowest on the steep slopes. Elephant browsing damage was highest in the valley, whereas giraffe browsing damage was highest on the plateau. Our findings suggest that fine‐scale habitat heterogeneity is an important factor in predicting the distribution of large herbivores and their effects on vegetation and may interact with other drivers such as edaphic variations to influence local variation in vegetation structure and composition.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to determine the genera or species composition and the number of colony forming units of airborne bacteria and fungi, respectively, in two salt mines in Poland “Wieliczka” (Lesser Poland) and “Polkowice–Sieroszowice” (Lower Silesia). Both of them are working environments characterized by extreme conditions, and additionally “Wieliczka,” officially placed on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites’ list, plays a role of tourist attraction. There are also some curative chambers located in this mine. Air samples were taken once in December 2015, between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. There were nine measurement points located about 200 m underground in “Wieliczka” and six measurement points located in the working shafts about 400 m underground in “Polkowice–Sieroszowice.” The total volume of each air sample was 150 L. Air samples, collected in individual measurement points of both salt mines, were inoculated on two microbiological media: potato dextrose agar and tryptic soy agar using the impact method. We identified 10 and 3 fungal genera in the “Wieliczka” Salt Mine and in “Polkowice–Sieroszowice,” respectively. The most common were fungi of the Penicillium genus. In both mines, the Gram-positive bacteria of genus Micrococcus were detected most frequently. Among identified microorganisms, there were neither pathogenic fungi nor bacteria. The most prevalent microorganisms detected in indoor air were Gram-positive cocci, which constituted up to 80% of airborne microflora. Our results showed that microorganisms recorded in the air samples are not a threat to workers, tourists or patients. Neither pathogens nor potentially pathogenic microorganisms, listed as BSL-2, BSL-3 or BSL-4, were detected. The microbes identified during our analysis commonly occur in such environments as the soil, water and air. Some of the detected bacteria are component of natural microflora of human skin and mucous membranes, and they can cause only opportunistic infections in individuals depending on their health condition.  相似文献

Some epidemiological studies report a relationship between magnetic field exposure and such human diseases as leukemia and immune system disturbances. The few published studies on animals do not demonstrate field exposure-related alterations in hematologic and immune systems. The data presented here are part of a broader study designed to investigate the possible effects of acute exposure to a 50 Hz linearly polarized magnetic field (10 μT) on hematologic and immunologic functions. Thirty-two young men (20–30 years old) were divided into two groups (control group, i.e., sham-exposed, 16 subjects; exposed group, 16 subjects). All subjects participated in two 24 h experiments to evaluate the effects of both continuous and intermittent (1 h “off” and 1 h with the field switched “on” and “off” every 15 s) exposure to linearly polarized magnetic fields. The subjects were exposed to the magnetic field (generated by three Helmholtz coils per bed) from 23:00 to 08:00 while lying down. Blood samples were collected during each session at 3 h intervals from 11:00 to 20:00 and hourly from 22:00 to 08:00. No significant differences were observed between sham-exposed (control) and exposed men for hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit, red blood cells, platelets, total leukocytes, monocytes, lymphocytes, eosinophils, or neutrophils. Immunologic variables [CD3, CD4, CD8, natural killer (NK) cells and B cells] were unaltered. To our knowledge, this study is the first to document the effects of a 50 Hz magnetic field on the circadian rhythm of human hematologic and immune functions, and it suggests that acute exposure to either a continuous or an intermittent 50 Hz linearly polarized magnetic field of 10 μT, at least under the conditions of our experiment, does not affect either these functions or their circadian rhythms in healthy young men. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Male rats in which three pituitaries were grafted beneath the kidney capsule showed approximately a fourfold increase in circulating plasma prolactin concentration. The elevated plasma prolactin concentration did not remain at a constant level but fluctuated with time. The elevated prolactin concentration declined immediately after a single bolus injection of ergocristine (30 micrograms/kg). The slope of the prolactin decay curve, determined by sequential blood sampling, was parallel to a theoretical slope having a 7-min half-life. This result indicates that ergocristine blocked prolactin secretion immediately and completely as the decay curve (T 1/2 = 6.5 min, confidence interval 4.5--11.3) resulting from the administration of ergocristine is the same as the endogenous prolactin decay curve (T 1/2 = 7 min).  相似文献

Recent studies show that bright and dim light intensities during the daytime have important regulatory functions. Our present study was performed to evaluate the effect of exposure to different light intensities during the morning and evening on salivary secretion and its sodium concentration. The study involved 6 healthy, female volunteers who were exposed to dim light (100 lx) from 7:00 to 17:00 and to bright light (3000 lx) from 17:00 to 23:00 one day, and to bright light (3000 lx) from 7:00 to 17:00 and dim light (100 lx) from 17:00 to 23:00 on the next day. We collected salivary samples every 10 minutes during 2 hours in the morning and in the evening by means of a Lashley cup. Saliva secretion was stimulated by sweet candy. The amount of saliva secreted was significantly greater in the morning under bright light exposure, while it was significantly greater in the evening under dim light exposure. We discuss these findings in terms of changes in activity of the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) and sympathetic (SNS) nervous system produced by exposure to different light intensities at different times of the day.  相似文献
