This review describes the various manifestations of the pyrimidine system (alkylated, glycosylated, benzo-annelated.). These comprise pyrimidine nucleosides as well as alkaloids and antibiotics--some of them have been discovered and isolated from natural sources already long time ago, others have been reported very recently. A short overview on pyrimidine syntheses (prebiotic synthesis, biosynthesis, and metabolism) is given. The biological activities of most of the pyrimidine analogs are briefly described, and, in some cases, syntheses are formulated.  相似文献

Abstract

In this study, we aimed to synthesize copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) mediated by plant extract in an environmentally friendly way and to reveal their potential biological activities. Here we synthesized CuONPs by using different concentrations of aqueous leaf extract of Thymbra spicata at 80?°C to obtain Ts1CuONPs and Ts2CuONPs. Biosynthesized nanoparticles were characterized by using UV-Vis, AFM, FTIR, SEM-EDS, TEM, DLS and zeta potential analysis. The antibacterial activity of the nanoparticles was determined by calculation of the inhibition zone and minimum inhibitory concentration against selected bacterial strains. Moreover, the antioxidant activity of the as-synthesized nanoparticles was evaluated based on DPPH radical scavenging activity. The results indicate that the as-synthesized NPs have an average size of 26.8 and 21?nm for Ts1CuONPs and Ts2CuONPs, respectively. The formed CuONPs have more antibacterial action on gram-positive bacteria compared to gram-negative bacteria. In addition, CuONPs demonstrated good inhibition activity against biofilm formation of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Furthermore, the results showed that the smaller size of the CuONPs caused the higher cytotoxicity on L929 mouse fibroblast cells. The as-synthesized CuONPs exhibit antibacterial and antibiofilm potential against S. aureus, indicating that they may be attractive candidates to use in future therapeutic applications.  相似文献

The health benefits associated with a diet rich in fruit and vegetables include reduction of the risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer, that are becoming prevalent in the aging human population. Triterpenoids, polycyclic compounds derived from the linear hydrocarbon squalene, are widely distributed in edible and medicinal plants and are an integral part of the human diet. As an important group of phytochemicals that exert numerous biological effects and display various pharmacological activities, triterpenoids are being evaluated for use in new functional foods, drugs, cosmetics and healthcare products. Screening plant material in the search for triterpenoid-rich plant tissues has identified fruit peel and especially fruit cuticular waxes as promising and highly available sources. The chemical composition, abundance and biological activities of triterpenoids occurring in cuticular waxes of some economically important fruits, like apple, grape berry, olive, tomato and others, are described in this review. The need for environmentally valuable and potentially profitable technologies for the recovery, recycling and upgrading of residues from fruit processing is also discussed.  相似文献

Hydrophilic and lipophilic extracts of twelve cyanobacterial strains, isolated from fresh and brackish water, and two waterblooms, collected during the summer from the Baltic Sea, were investigated for their antibiotic activities against seven microorganisms. No inhibitory effects were found against the three Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis and Serratia marcescens and the yeast Candida maltosa. Of all cyanobacterial samples, extracts from seven species inhibited the growth of at least one of the Gram-positive bacteria Micrococcus flavus, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis. M. flavus proved to be the most sensitive bacterium in the agar diffusion test system. In particular, the hexane and dichlormethane extracts showed antimicrobial effects. But only one water extract, prepared from material of a natural waterbloom, was found to be active.  相似文献

For the first time, the presence of three natural spirolactones hydroxylated at C6C7 (6 alpha, 7 alpha-, 6 beta, 7 alpha- and 6 beta, 7 beta-dihydroxy-6,7-dihydrocanrenone (DHC) is demonstrated in man and in animal urine (rat, dog, sheep), and possibly in the blood. The existence of the fourth isomer 6 alpha, 7 beta- is also possible. Salt-loading in man and the rat results in a decrease in urinary 6 alpha, 7 alpha- and 6 beta, 7 beta-DHC. Salt-depletion increases their urinary concentration in the rat. DHC isomers are not found in the urine of adrenalectomized rats. Injected into the caudal vein of the rat, both 6 alpha, 7 alpha- and 6 beta, 7 beta-DHC induce a significant retention of Na+. On the other hand, 6 beta, 7 alpha-DHC significantly increases Na+ and K+ excretion. The biological activities of these natural compounds seem to be different from those of synthetic spirolactonic drugs.  相似文献

Background: Lonicera caerulea L. (blueberry honeysuckle, Caprifoliaceae) is a traditional crop in northern Russia, China, and Japan. Its fruits are little known as edible berries in North America and Europe. This review deals with the botany and chemical composition of L. caerulea and the biological activity of its main constituents, focusing on the potential health benefits of the berries. Methods and Results: PubMed, Science Direct and ISI Web of Knowledge(SM) databases were used for this paper. Literature sources include the period 1935-2007. L. caerulea berries a are rich source of phenolic compounds such as phenolic acids as well as anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins and other flavonoids, which display potential health promoting effects. Chemopreventive, antimicrobial, anti-adherence and antioxidant benefits, among others are described for these compounds. Conclusions: The potential of L. caerulea berries to prevent chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases and cancer seems to be related above all to their phenolic content.  相似文献

Progress on a total synthesis of the marine natural products, the bryostatins, is reviewed. Following studies aimed at the synthesis of the 1,16- and 17,27-fragments, procedures for the assembly of the macrocyclic ring of the bryostatins were investigated. Although ring-closing metathesis was not found to be useful for the synthesis of bryostatins with geminal dimethyl groups at C18, the modified Julia reaction was found to be useful for the stereoselective formation of the 16,17-double-bond and led to a synthesis of an advanced macrocyclic intermediate. A unique characteristic of carbohydrates is their structural diversity which is greater than that of many other classes of biological compounds. Carbohydrate-containing natural products show many different biological activities and some of them have been developed as drugs for medical use. The biosynthesis of carbohydrate-containing natural products is catalysed by glycosyltransferases. In this review we will present information on the function of glycosyltransferases involved in the biosynthesis of oligosaccharide antibiotics focusing especially on urdamycins and landomycins, two angucycline antibiotics with interesting antitumor activities. We will also discuss the use of glycosyltransferases in combinatorial biosynthesis to generate new "hybrid" antibiotics.  相似文献

Plants of 76 species from 25 families growing in the forest-steppe zone of West Siberia are analyzed for the content of low-molecular biologically active compounds, such as flavonoids, tannins, catechins, coumarins, saponins, and alkaloids. It is established that 33 species hold promise as a source of flavonoids, 29 species tannins, 21 coumarins, 13 saponins, 13 alkaloids, and 1 catechins.  相似文献
