The calla lily (Zantedeschia aethiopica) is an ornamental plant with growing acceptance in the market place that shows thermal constraints during planting. This study aimed to analyse its biological cycle in growing degree days (GDD) to determine the best time for planting and production of flower stalks. Rhizomes were planted in pots during all four seasons, and the pots were kept in a greenhouse. Growth analysis and gas exchange measurements were performed every 30 days. Rhizomes planted in the fall and summer showed greater shoot growth, a larger root system and increased production of flower stalks, and they remained in the vegetative phase longer before the onset of flowering, attaining a lower GDD value. Rhizomes planted in winter and spring matured early, which resulted in a higher GDD value and a decrease or lack of flower stalk production during this period. Calla lily rhizomes planted in the fall and summer showed higher water-use efficiency, light-use efficiency and net photosynthesis. It is possible to characterise the stages of development according to gas exchange. The calla lily must be cultivated with an irradiance of 250–400 µmol m?2 s?1 in a temperature range of 25–28 °C during the initial growth phase (up to 1,000 GDD). Thereafter, the temperature range should be reduced to between 13 and 15 °C until 3,500 GDD are reached, which was found to enable increased flower stalk production.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of long-term studies on winter feeding of ptarmigan in Yakutia. This territory of the species habitat is characterized by the longest snow period and low ambient temperatures. Like in the predominant part of the range, the basis of winter feeding of birds is made up here of the vegetative parts of willow and birch. The period of winter feeding lasts 230–250 days in individuals of the northern populations and 170–180 days in individuals of the southern population. It was found that the preference for birch by ptarmigan changed to a preference for willow with advancement to the north and to the mountains. In addition to birch and willow, the diet of the birds includes up to 23 plant species. Among them, horsetail, chosenia, and larch can serve as the main food due to both biotic factors (the presence of animal excavations) and abiotic factors (thin snow cover, long-term severe frosts). In severe frosts, ptarmigans mainly feed on the ground using almost all the plants including those they do not prefer in warmer days. Two peaks of the craw fullness were observed in birds at average daily air temperatures below–50°C, and four peaks were noted in warmer days. The first peak is obviously due to the need to be in shelter for most of the daytime.  相似文献

Climatic change is expected to affect the spatiotemporal patterns of airborne allergenic pollen, which has been found to act synergistically with common air pollutants, such as ozone, to cause allergic airway disease (AAD). Observed airborne pollen data from six stations from 1994 to 2011 at Fargo (North Dakota), College Station (Texas), Omaha (Nebraska), Pleasanton (California), Cherry Hill and Newark (New Jersey) in the US were studied to examine climate change effects on trends of annual mean and peak value of daily concentrations, annual production, season start, and season length of Betula (birch) and Quercus (oak) pollen. The growing degree hour (GDH) model was used to establish a relationship between start/end dates and differential temperature sums using observed hourly temperatures from surrounding meteorology stations. Optimum GDH models were then combined with meteorological information from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, and land use land coverage data from the Biogenic Emissions Land use Database, version 3.1 (BELD3.1), to simulate start dates and season lengths of birch and oak pollen for both past and future years across the contiguous US (CONUS). For most of the studied stations, comparison of mean pollen indices between the periods of 1994–2000 and 2001–2011 showed that birch and oak trees were observed to flower 1–2 weeks earlier; annual mean and peak value of daily pollen concentrations tended to increase by 13.6 %–248 %. The observed pollen season lengths varied for birch and for oak across the different monitoring stations. Optimum initial date, base temperature, and threshold GDH for start date was found to be 1 March, 8 °C, and 1,879 h, respectively, for birch; 1 March, 5 °C, and 4,760 h, respectively, for oak. Simulation results indicated that responses of birch and oak pollen seasons to climate change are expected to vary for different regions.  相似文献

Silver birch telomeres shorten in tissue culture   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Shortening of telomeres has been connected with ageing and loss of cell replication or regeneration capacity. The aim of the present study was to examine potential variation in the length of telomeric repeats in silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) using clonal materials consisting of different-aged outdoor trees and tissue cultures of seven genotypes. The overall average length of telomeres was 13.6 kb (±0.3), the minimum length of repeats in the different genotypes varied from 5.9 kb (±0.5) to 9.6 kb (±0.6), and the maximum length varied from 15.3 kb (±1.1) to 22.8 kb (±0.4). When germinated seeds and leaf and cambium samples from 15- and 80-year-old trees were compared, no correlation of ageing and the length of telomeric repeats was found. Positional variation in the telomere length was, however, observed in the cambium of mature trees, the stem base having longer repeats than the upper parts of the tree. Tissue cultures were found to have shorter telomeres than outdoor trees: prolonged culture, callus culture and stressful conditions were all observed to shorten telomeric repeats and should thus be avoided in birch micropropagation. There were significant differences among the studied silver birch genotypes in their telomere length, and these differences were consistent over the sample types. This is the first report on variation of telomeric repeats in a long-living organism studied with clonal materials.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to analyse birch pollen time series observed in Montreal (Canada) in order to understand the link between inter-annual variability of phenology and environmental factors and to build predictive models for the upcoming pollen season. Modeling phenology is challenging, especially in Canada, where phenological observations are rare. Nevertheless, understanding phenology is required for scientific applications (e.g. inputs to numerical models of pollen dispersion) but also to help allergy sufferers to better prepare their medication and avoidance strategies before the start of the pollen season. We used multivariate statistical regression to analyse and predict phenology. The predictors were drawn from a large basin (over 60) of potential environmental predictors including meteorological data and global climatic indices such NAO (North Atlantic Oscillation index) and ENSO/MEI (Multivariate Enso Index). Results of this paper are summarized as follows: (1) an accurate forecast for the upcoming season starting date of the birch pollen season was obtained (showing low bias and total forecast error of about 4 days in Montreal), (2) NAO and ENSO/MEI indices were found to be well correlated (i.e. 44% of the variance explained) with birch phenology, (3) a long-term trend of 2.6 days per decade (p < 0.1) towards longer season duration was found for the length of the birch pollen season in Montreal. Finally, perturbations of the quasi-biennial cycle of birch were observed in the pollen data during the pollen season following the Great Ice Storm of 1998 which affected south-eastern Canada.  相似文献

The ability of the decay fungus Chondrostereum purpureum to grow within birch (Betula pendula and Betula pubescens), aspen (Populus tremula), rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) and willow (Salix caprea) stumps or root systems is unknown, although such information would be crucial in understanding its impact on the vegetative growth of broadleaved trees, their ecology and potential biocontrol. Saplings of these tree species were cut and inoculated with the fungus. After 3 months, 47, 14, 0 and 0% of birch, aspen, rowan and willow stumps, respectively, were dead, and C. purpureum was frequently present within the stumps of all species. In more than half of the birch stumps investigated, the fungus had penetrated into the roots unlike in the other tree species. Our results indicate that C. purpureum can utilize the woody material of birch better than that of other species, and that penetration into the roots is needed to kill the host.  相似文献

In the last 40 years, the shallow steppe lake, Neusiedler See, was ice covered between 0 and 97 days. The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) as well as the Mediterranean Oscillation affected the lake and its conditions during winter. Both climate indices correlated negatively with the duration of ice cover and the timing of ice-out. Average winter phytoplankton biomass increased from less than 0.2 (0.05–0.84) mg FM l?1 in the late 1960s/beginning of 1970s to 3.1 (1.72–5.61) mg FM l?1 in the years 2001–2004. The increase in annual winter biomass of phytoplankton was associated with a significant shift in the composition of the algal assemblage. In the winter 1997/1998, diatoms contributed between 40 and 80% to the phytoplankton biomass while in 2006/2007 cyanoprokaryotes contributed 46%. Mean chlorophyll-a concentrations during winter were significantly correlated with those of total phosphorus (Ptot). Together with cold-water species (rotifer Rhinoglena fertöensis), perennial, eurythermal ones (copepod Arctodiaptomus spinosus) contributed to the zooplankton community. High zooplankton numbers were encountered when rotifers, particularly when densities of Rhinoglena fertöensis were high (r 2 = 0.928). Zooplankton abundance and biomass varied from year to year but correlated positively with Chl-a (biomass ? r 2 = 0.69; numbers ? r 2 = 0.536). Winter zooplankton populations were primarily influenced by winter conditions, but in early winter also by survival of autumn populations, i.e., the more adults of Arctodiaptomus spinosus survived into winter, the higher was the zooplankton biomass in early winter. Phyto- and zooplankton dynamics in shallow lakes of the temperate region seem to critically depend on the biomass in autumn and on winter conditions, specifically on ice conditions and thus are related to climate signals such as the NAO.  相似文献

Relationships between temporal variations in the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and grass pollen counts at 13 sites in Europe, ranging from Córdoba in the south-west and Turku in the north-east, were studied in order to determine spatial differences in the amount of influence exerted by the NAO on the timing and magnitude of grass pollen seasons. There were a number of significant (P < 0.05) relationships between the NAO and start dates of the grass pollen season at the 13 pollen-monitoring sites. The strongest associations were generally recorded near to the Atlantic coast. Several significant correlations also existed between winter averages of the NAO and grass pollen season severity. Traditional methods for predicting the start or magnitude of grass pollen seasons have centred on the use of local meteorological observations, but this study has shown the importance of considering large-scale patterns of climate variability like the NAO.  相似文献

An algorithm (Weather Reader) was developed and used to analyze daily weather records from all existing Canadian and American weather stations of eastern North America (in excess of 2100 stations), from 1930 through 2000. Specifically, the Weather Reader was used to compile daily minimum, mean, and maximum air temperatures for weather stations with at least 30 years of data, and was used to calculate accumulated degree days for winter thaw–freeze events relevant to yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britt.) from beginning to end. A thaw–freeze event relevant to yellow birch was considered to take place when (i) the station daily maximum temperature reached or exceeded +4°C after being below freezing for at least 2 months of the winter, (ii) sufficient growing degree days accumulated (>50 growing degree days) to cause the affected yellow birch trees to prematurely deharden, and (iii) the daily minimum temperature dropped below ?4°C causing roots and/or shoots of dehardened trees to experience freeze‐induced injury and possibly dieback. The threshold temperature of +4°C represents the daily temperature above which biological activity occurs in yellow birch. The station growing degree day summaries were subsequently spatially interpolated with the Kriging function in GS+? and mapped in ArcView? GIS in order to display the geographic extent of the most severe thaw–freeze events. The ArcView? maps were then compared with the extent of historically observed yellow birch decline. It was found that the years 1936, 1944, and 1945 were particularly uncharacteristic in terms of region‐wide winter thaw–freeze extremes, and also in terms of observed birch decline events during 1930–1960. An overlay of suspected accumulated birch decline based on thaw–freeze mapping and observed decline maps prepared by Braathe (1995), Auclair (1987) , and Auclair et al. (1997) for 1930–1960 demonstrated similar geographic patterns. The thaw–freeze projection for 1930–1960 was shown to coincide with 83% of the birch decline map appearing in Braathe (1995) and 55% of the geographic range of yellow birch in eastern North America. Thaw–freeze mapping was also applied to two significant events in 1981. Greatest impact was recorded to occur mostly in southern Quebec and Ontario, and several American Great Lake States, specifically in northern Michigan and New York, where the greatest growing degree day accumulation prior to refreeze in late February (February 28th) was projected to have occurred; and in southern Quebec, most of Atlantic Canada, and Maine, prior to a late spring frost in mid‐April (April 17).  相似文献

Aim

We studied the vertical and lateral root distribution of tree species from three genera (Populus spp. - poplar, Picea spp. - spruce, Salix spp. - willow) that were planted in temperate windbreaks and assessed the effects of soil texture on root density.

Methods

Root distribution to depths of up to 1 m was assessed using the trench-profile method at different distances from the tree rows (2, 6 and 9 m) in 18 mature (average age, 25 years-old) windbreak-sites that were located on light- or heavy-textured agricultural soils in southeastern Québec, Canada. Roots were classified into three diameter classes: fine (<1 mm), medium-size (1–5 mm), and coarse (>5 mm).

Results

Tree fine-root density in poplar and willow windbreaks was higher than in spruce windbreaks at 2 m from the tree row. Root densities were higher in light compared to heavy soils, but these differences were specific to poplar and spruce. Across species groups and soil types, 67 % of the roots occurred in the uppermost 30 cm. In this soil zone, different soil fertility variables (pH, clay content, CEC) were negatively correlated with root density. Densities of spruce and willow roots at 6 m from the tree row were much lower (and often unobserved) than that of poplar. At 9 m, low root densities were observed at only two sites.

Conclusions

We conclude that tree identity and soil type are important drivers of root distribution in temperate agroforestry systems. These results may have important implications for the management of tree competition in agroforestry systems and several ecosystem services that are provided by roots, including C-sequestration, erosion control and water infiltration.  相似文献

To evaluate the feasibility of long-term cryopreservation of Polish provenances of silver birch (Betula pendula), the sensitivity of conditionally dormant seeds to extreme desiccation and/or the ultra-low temperature of liquid nitrogen (LN; ?196°C) was evaluated. The critical water content (WC) of desiccated seeds and the high-moisture freezing limit of seeds desiccated or moistened to various WCs and frozen for 24 h or for 2 years in LN was also determined. Germination tests revealed no critical WC for seeds [to 0.02 g H2O g?1 dry mass (g g?1)]. Seeds tolerated freezing in LN within specific safe range of WC 0.02–0.23 g g?1 (nuts). Seeds desiccated to the safe WC and stored in LN for 2 years had similar or higher germination as seeds stored at ?3°C for 2 years, depending on provenance. Therefore, long-term cryopreservation of B. pendula seeds in gene banks is feasible.  相似文献

Monument Creek, a second-order Alaskan subarctic stream, experiences a severe thermal regime, with water temperatures of 0°C for six months. Leaching, long-term decomposition and macroinvertebrate colonization of 5 g leaf packs were studied using leaves of the major riparian tree species, alder Alnus tenuifolia Nutt., birch Betula papyrifera Marsh. and willow Salix alaxensis (Anderss.) Cov. subsp. alaxensis and Salix arbucolides Anders. var. glabra Anderss. The processing rates of birch (k = 0.0080) and willow (k = 0.0063) were moderate while alder was processed very rapidly (k = 0.0513). Leaching rates did not differ significantly among the three leaf species, and accounted for 10–15% of total weight loss. Densities and biovolume of colonizing insects increased from fall to winter. Shredders dominated insect biovolume by midwinter, but were a small fraction of total biovolume in leaf packs that had frozen over winter and were sampled following spring thaw. This may be a function of low food quality in spring and/or the timing of shredder life histories. Limited allochthonous input and constriction of the stream channel due to freezing, with resultant high shredder densities, may explain the relatively rapid detritus processing rates in Monument Creek, despite cold stream temperatures.  相似文献

Climate change effects on some ecosystems are still poorly known, particularly where they interact with other climatic phenomena or stressors. We used data spanning 25 years (1981–2005) from temperate headwaters at Llyn Brianne (UK) to test three hypotheses: (1) stream macroinvertebrates vary with winter climate; (2) ecological effects attributable to directional climate change and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) are distinguishable and (3) climatic effects on macroinvertebrates depend on whether streams are impacted by acidification. Positive (i.e. warmer, wetter) NAO phases were accompanied by reduced interannual stability (=similarity) in macroinvertebrate assemblage in all streams, but associated variations in composition occurred only in acid moorland. The NAO and directional climate change together explained 70% of interannual variation in temperature, but forest and moorland streams warmed respectively by 1.4 and 1.7°C (P<0.001) between 1981 and 2005 after accounting for NAO effects. Significant responses among macroinvertebrates were confined to circumneutral streams, where future thermal projections (+1, +2, +3°C) suggested considerable change. Spring macroinvertebrate abundance might decline by 21% for every 1°C rise. Although many core species could persist if temperature gain reached 3°C, 4–10 mostly scarce taxa (5–12% of the species pool) would risk local extinction. Temperature increase in Wales approaches this magnitude by the 2050s under the Hadley HadCM3 scenarios. These results support all three hypotheses and illustrate how headwater stream ecosystems are sensitive to climate change. Altered composition and abundance could affect conservation and ecological function, with the NAO compounding climate change effects during positive phases. We suggest that acidification, in impacted streams, overrides climatic effects on macroinvertebrates by simplifying assemblages and reducing richness. Climatic processes might, nevertheless, exacerbate acidification or offset biological recovery.  相似文献

Heat requirement, expressed in growing degree days (GDD), is a widely used method to assess and predict the effect of temperature on plant development. Until recently, the analysis of spatial patterns of GDD requirement for spring vegetation green‐up onset was limited to local and regional scales, mainly because of the sparse and aggregated spatial availability of ground phenology data. Taking advantage of the large temporal and spatial scales of remote sensing‐based green‐up onset data, we studied the spatial patterns of GDD requirement for vegetation green‐up at northern middle and high latitudes. We further explored the correlations between GDD requirement for vegetation green‐up and previous winter season chilling temperatures and precipitation, using spatial partial correlations. We showed that GDD requirement for vegetation green‐up onset declines towards the north at a mean rate of 18.8 °C‐days per degree latitude between 35°N and 70°N, and vary significantly among different vegetation types. Our results confirmed that the GDD requirement for vegetation green‐up is negatively correlated with previous winter chilling, which was defined as the number of chilling days from the day when the land surface froze in the previous autumn to the day of green‐up onset. This negative correlation is a well‐known phenomenon from local studies. Interestingly, irrespective of the vegetation type, we also found a positive correlation between the GDD requirement and previous winter season precipitation, which was defined as the sum of the precipitation of the month when green‐up onset occur and the precipitation that occurred during the previous 2 months. Our study suggests that GDD requirement, chilling and precipitation may have complex interactions in their effects on spring vegetation green‐up phenology. These findings have important implications for improving phenology models and could therefore advance our understanding of the interplay between spring phenology and carbon fluxes.  相似文献

The male flowering and leaf bud burst of birch take place almost simultaneously, suggesting that the observations of leaf bud burst could be used to determine the timing of birch pollen release. However, long‐distance transport of birch pollen before the onset of local flowering may complicate the utilization of phenological observations in pollen forecasting.

We compared the timing of leaf bud burst of silver birch with the timing of the stages of birch pollen season during an eight year period (1997–2004) at five sites in Finland. The stages of the birch pollen season were defined using four different thresholds: 1) the first date of the earliest three‐day period with airborne birch pollen counts exceeding 10 grains m?3 air; and the dates when the accumulated pollen sum reaches 2) 5%; 3) 50% and 4) 95% of the annual total. Atmospheric modelling was used to determine the source areas for the observed long‐distance transported pollen, and the exploitability of phenological observations in pollen forecasting was evaluated.

Pair‐wise comparisons of means indicate that the timing of leaf bud burst fell closest to the date when the accumulated pollen sum reached 5% of the annual total, and did not differ significantly from it at any site (p<0.05; Student‐Newman‐Keuls test). It was found that the timing of leaf bud burst of silver birch overlaps with the first half of the main birch pollen season. However, phenological observations alone do not suffice to determine the timing of the main birch pollen season because of long‐distance transport of birch pollen.  相似文献

Potassium (K), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe) and aluminium (Al) release from Norway spruce (Picea abies Karsten), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.) logging residues (fine roots, foliage and small branches) were studied by means of litterbags over a period of three years in clear-cut area and adjacent uncut Norway spruce dominated mixed boreal forest in eastern Finland (63°51′ N, 28°58′ E, 220 m a.s.l) to determine the amounts and rates of release for these elements and to evaluate whether clear-cutting accelerates mineralization. Almost all K was released from logging residues already during the first year. Calcium was released from foliage and roots but accumulated in branches. Most of the roots Fe and Al content were released during three years while the absolute amounts of Fe and Al in branches and foliage generally increased with decomposition. The results indicate that mineralization is slightly accelerated as a result of clear-cutting since K from foliage and branches of all studied tree species and Ca from pine and spruce roots was released significantly faster at the clear-cut plot than at the forest plot. In three years the initial K pool in the logging residues declined by 90%, Ca by 8%, Fe by 55% and Al by 61% in the clear-cut area. These results indicate that Ca is retained a long time; but Fe, Al and in particular, K are soon released from logging residues. Fine roots of the logged trees release large amounts of Fe and Al and can significantly affect Fe and Al fluxes.  相似文献

The objective of this work was to isolate a microorganism producing alkaline protease that can be used as an ecofriendly alternative to chemicals in dehairing process of leather manufacture. Alkaline protease producing bacterium Vibrio metschnikovii NG155 was isolated from soil samples of leather industry. The protease was highly effective in dehairing of goat skin, completely eliminating the use of lime and sulfide. Histological studies of the skin after dehairing showed that the enzyme did not damage the collagen layer and brought good fiber opening. Absence of collagenase activity was confirmed by reacting pure collagen with the enzyme and analyzing it on SDS PAGE, which showed no degradation of collagen. The enzyme was stable in a wide range of pH (7–11) and temperature (10–50 °C), which makes it suitable for industrial application.  相似文献

Water and nutrient fluxes for single stands of different tree species have been reported in numerous studies, but comparative studies of nutrient and hydrological budgets of common European deciduous tree species are rare. Annual fluxes of water and inorganic nitrogen (N) were established in a 30‐year‐old common garden design with stands of common ash (Fraxinus excelsior), European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), pedunculate oak (Quercus robur), small‐leaved lime (Tilia cordata Mill.), sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus) and Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) replicated at two sites in Denmark, Mattrup and Vallø during 2 years. Mean annual percolation below the root zone (mm yr?1±SE, n=4) ranked in the following order: maple (351±38)>lime (284±32), oak (271±25), beech (257±30), ash (307±69)? spruce (75±24). There were few significant tree species effects on N fluxes. However, the annual mean N throughfall flux (kg N ha?1 yr?1±SE, n=4) for spruce (28±2) was significantly larger than for maple (12±1), beech (11±1) and oak (9±1) stands but not different from that of lime (15±3). Ash had a low mean annual inorganic N throughfall deposition of 9.1 kg ha?1, but was only present at Mattrup. Annual mean of inorganic N leaching (kg ha?1 yr?1±SE, n=4) did not differ significantly between species despite of contrasting tree species mean values; beech (25±9)>oak (16±10), spruce (15±8), lime (14±8)? maple (1.9±1), ash (2.0±1). The two sites had similar throughfall N fluxes, whereas the annual leaching of N was significantly higher at Mattrup than at Vallø. Accordingly, the sites differed in soil properties in relation to rates and dynamics of N cycling. We conclude that tree species affect the N cycle differently but the legacy of land use exerted a dominant control on the N cycle within the short‐term perspective (30 years) of these stands.  相似文献

In the DOORMAT (Direct Observation of Recent Macrofossils Across Treeline) project, the modern representation of local vegetation by pollen and plant remains (plant macrofossils) across a west Norwegian tree line, composed of Betula pubescens and Pinus sylvestris, has been studied over 2 years. The aim was to discover if the modern tree line could be detected and therefore how precisely past tree-line movements could be reconstructed and related to Holocene climate changes by using one proxy or a combination of both. Traps were placed in the vegetation from 663 to 1,120 m a.s.l., spanning the pine altitudinal species limit, the birch tree-line ecotone, and the vegetation zones up to the mid-alpine zone. Three traps were also set in the small lake Trettetjørn close to the modern tree line at 800 m a.s.l. Traps were emptied twice a year to sample both summer and winter seasons. Macrofossils represent their local vegetation well. However, tree Betula remains were trapped above the tree line and Pinus and Picea remains were recorded 1.0–1.5 km away from their sources, demonstrating considerable dispersal capacity. This shows that rare macrofossil remains do not necessarily represent the local presence of these trees. Aerial tree pollen deposition in traps at the upper limit of pine woodland and in the subalpine birch woodland was unexpectedly low, whereas pollen accumulation rates (PAR) were orders of magnitude higher in the lake traps. We hypothesise that the lake receives regional pollen rain washed in from its catchment by snow meltwater and that high values in traps are due to continuous suspension of pollen in the lake water during summer. The interpretation of tree-line changes from existing Holocene pollen and plant macrofossil data from Trettetjørn was supported and refined by the DOORMAT macrofossil data, but the modern pollen data were anomalous.  相似文献

Distribution, population dynamics, growth and aspects of reproductive biology of Corophium insidiosum were investigated in Monolimni lagoon. Samples were collected in July 1997 (at 30 psu S) and during February 1998–May 1999 (at 0.1–5.7 psu S). Corophium insidiosumwas almost exclusively found in the outer part of the lagoon, which showed a higher water renewal rate. Population density gradually decreased during winter and spring, when salinity was lower than 1 psu and the amphipod finally vanished from the lagoon. Salinity increase during summer (1.2–5.7 psu) was followed by the re-occurrence of C. insidiosum with a time lag of 2–3 months. Population density increased in autumn and peaked in early winter at salinities 1.6–4.2 psu. Three cohorts appeared in the population during September 1998–March 1999. Breeding activity peaked in early autumn (14–21?°C, 4 psu S) and ceased after December (2–6.5?°C, ¡1.5 psu S). The preponderance of females in the large size classes resulted in a female- biased sex ratio in the whole population. The population showed a growth rate of 7.5–11.2 μm d?1 being faster in autumn (9–21?°C, 3–4 psu S) than in winter (2–12?°C, 0.2–3 psu). An exponential relation existed between body length and cephalic length or dry body weight, while brood size was directly related to body length. Mean brood size was small (4.96 early embryos) and egg loss during development high (53%), possibly as a consequence of low salinities.  相似文献
