The pectoral muscle index ( I PM)( I PM = 100 M PM M−1, where M PM and M are the pectoral muscle and body masses, respectively) fin‐area and fin ray length were studied over a year in male and female three‐spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus from a marine population (Öresund, Sweden) kept under simulated natural light and temperature conditions. A castration‐replacement experiment was used to test androgen effects on the I PM, fin‐area and fin ray length. Non‐breeding males were castrated or sham‐operated in winter ( i.e . the fish had low levels of androgens). Castrated control and sham‐operated fish were implanted with empty Silastic capsules and castrated groups with capsules containing the androgens testosterone or 11‐ketoandrostenedione into the abdominal cavity. The experiment was terminated after 41 days, when the controls had matured. No morphological differences were found in pectoral fins between sexes during the year, except during the peak breeding season (May), where females showed larger fin‐area and longer fin ray in length compared to males. No effects of androgens treatment or of castration on pectoral fin‐area or fin ray length was observed. Breeding and non‐breeding males showed higher I PM compared to females. The lower I PM in females than in males could not be explained by the larger gonads in the former alone, as a sex difference in I PM was still present after deduction of the ovaries from the female body mass. The I PM was higher in sham‐operated compared to castrated fish. No effects of androgens treatment on I PM was observed.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of blacknose sharks Carcharhinus acronotus in the western North Atlantic Ocean was studied by examining specimens collected in the coastal waters of South Carolina. Males begin the maturation process between 875 and 910 mm fork length ( L F), as indicated by the presence of functional claspers and siphon sacs. The presence of vitellogenic oocytes and developing oviducal glands and uteri indicated that females begin to mature at c . 870 mm L F. Length at which 50% of the population reached maturity was 896 and 964 mm L F, equivalent to 4·3 and 4·5 years, for males and females, respectively. Gonado‐somatic indices suggested that spermatogenesis and vitellogenesis began after December. Mating took place during the end of May and the beginning of June. Fertilization occurred during late June and early July, suggesting that female blacknose sharks were capable of sperm storage. Based on the timing of fertilization and occurrence of females carrying near‐term pups in late May and early June, the gestation period for blacknose sharks was c . 11 months. Female blacknose sharks reproduced biennially based on the absence of vitellogenic oocytes in near‐term females and there being no indication of vitellogenesis in postpartum females. Male blacknose sharks were capable of reproducing annually as indicated by turgid genital ducts, which were observed in all mature males collected during late May and early June.  相似文献

Ecology of the whiskered sole in the Sado Estuary, Portugal   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The abundance of the wiskered sole Monochirus hispidus in the Sado Estuary showed a marked seasonal pattern, the highest densities occurred in spring and summer. The density of this species was mainly related, non‐linearly, to depth, water transparency and percentage of gravel, fine sand and mud in the sediment. Monochirus hispidus fed mainly on crustaceans and polychaets. Significant differences were found between the proportions of prey items eaten and total length class; larger fish consumed more decapods and polychaets. The von Bertalanffy growth equation coefficients differed between sexes. The asymptotic length L obtained for females was higher compared to males, while the growth coefficient ( K ) was higher for males. Individuals with mature gonads were found between March and September, but the main spawning period of M. hispidus in the Sado Estuary was from March to June.  相似文献

Proportions of maturing fish and reproductive output [egg size, relative fecundity, spermatocrit and gonado‐somatic index ( I G)] were studied in repeat‐spawning (+4 year old) male and female Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus , subjected to periods of fasting. Groups of individually tagged Arctic charr were fasted for c . 3, 6, 7 and 9 months, from November 1998. In the period February to November 1999, size (fork length and mass), specific growth rate ( G ), condition factor ( K ) and plasma concentrations of growth hormone (GH), insulin‐like growth factor I (IGF‐I), oestradiol‐17β(E2; females) and 11‐ketotestosterone (11KT; males), were monitored monthly. Maturing fish in each group started to gain mass soon after food was made available, and both sexes reached the highest K and G c . 2 months after the onset of feeding. The fasting regimes resulted in different growth patterns during spring and summer when energy stores are normally replenished in Arctic charr, and K prior to the breeding season was significantly higher in the groups fasted for 3 and 6 months compared to the groups fasted for 7 and 9 months. There were significant positive correlations between K during the period prior to the breeding season and reproductive output in terms of the I G, spermatocrit and relative fecundity. There was, however, no clear relationship between the length of starvation and the proportion of maturing fish. Likewise, no clear relationships were found between reproductive development and plasma levels of GH and IGF‐I, although both showed marked seasonal changes, being 'down‐regulated' during winter months and 'up‐regulated' throughout summer months.  相似文献

Female Rhizoprionodon acutus were found to mature between 62 and 74 cm total length ( L T) whereas males matured between 63 and 71 cm L T. The L T at 50% maturity was 64·3 cm for females and 64·7 cm for males. Litter size varied from one to six embryos, and was positively correlated with maternal L T. Female embryos outnumbered males by a ratio of 2·3:1. The size at birth was c . 37 cm L T. Full‐term embryos and post‐partum females were observed during all seasons although their occurrence was highest in spring. Spermatozoa were rarely recorded in the oviducal gland, indicating that this species does not store sperm. It was not possible to generate maturity curves for Iago omanensis but it was evident that females matured by the time they reached 35 cm and males were mature by 31 cm L T. This species displayed a clearly defined reproductive cycle with parturition occurring primarily in spring, after a gestation period of c . 1 year. Maximal embryo size was 19 cm L T while maximal litter size was 24 embryos. The oviducal gland appeared to act as a seminal receptacle and it appeared that females may utilize these stores by not mating every year.  相似文献

The biology of the bigeye grenadier at South Georgia   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The biology of the bigeye grenadier Macrourus holotrachys caught as by‐catch in the Patagonian toothfish Dissostichus eleginoides longline fishery conducted around South Georgia was investigated to improve data available for fisheries management. Age estimates suggest that M. holotrachys is a moderately slow growing species ( K  = 0·10), reaching ages of >30 years and attaining total lengths ( L T) >80 cm ( L  = 33). The size at which 50% of females had started to mature ( L int50) for M. holotrachys was 21 cm pre‐anal length ( L PA) and occurred at c . 9 years old. Estimates of natural mortality and Pauly's growth performance index were found to be low ( M  = 0·09 and Φ = 2·82 respectively). Gonad maturity stage was described from macroscopic and histological investigation. Mature ovaries had oocytes at all developmental stages with between 22 and 55% likely to be spawned each year. Absolute fecundity ranged from 22 000 to 260 000 eggs and was positively correlated with both pre‐anal length and mass. A highly skewed sex ratio of 32 : 1, females : males, was found for specimens caught by longlines but not for a small sample of shallower trawl‐caught specimens. It is suggested that females are far more susceptible to longline capture than males. Macrourus holotrachys is a bentho‐pelagic predator and scavenger that feeds on a wide range of fishes and invertebrates. The fish are long lived, slow‐growing species typical of deep‐water grenadiers; fisheries management strategies should reflect their probable susceptibility to overfishing.  相似文献

Two year classes of cultured male yellowtail flounder Limanda ferruginea were followed in order to examine puberty and recrudescence at the gonadal level, and to assess the impacts of culture conditions on male reproduction. Cultured males demonstrated a propensity for maturation as 1 year‐old fish. Pubertal activation of testicular steroid production was associated with the appearance of primary spermatocytes, but a single case of a premeiotic endocrine activation was detected. The onset of puberty occurred during September and October, when adults were post‐spawned or in early recrudescence. Once initiated, pubertal development proceeded in an uninterrupted progression to full maturity by June at 22 months of age. Spermatogenetic activity during the autumn led to a peak in the gonado‐somatic index and total testicular mass by December. Milt could be first expressed from some pubertal males at this time, well in advance of the May to August spawning period in captivity. Meiotic activity could be absent from the testes by the spring, but residual areas of meiotic activity were found in pubertal males of one year class which may indicate a slower spermatogenetic rate. Androgen levels peaked during prespawning and early spawning; 11‐ketotestosterone (11‐KT) was the dominant androgen throughout spermatogenesis. Recrudescing 2 year‐old males showed greater testicular development and androgen production. Spermatogenetic patterns were similar to those seen in pubertal males, with the distinction that recrudescing males had a more discernable mitotic phase prior to meiotic activity; mitotic and meiotic activity overlapped considerably during early puberty. Testicular development well in advance of spawning may confer an evolutionary advantage to males of this cold‐water marine flatfish.  相似文献

751 specimens of spined loach, Cobitis taenia (L.), were collected and studied over the period October 1972–October 1974. The majority of the males were found to die at the end of the 2+ season and the majority of the females at the end of the 3+ season. Back calculations for length at age were carried out from otolith measurements and found to correspond closely to actual measurements. Males and females grew similarly up until the end of their 1+ year of life, with most rapid growth occurring in the first year. Females continued to grow rapidly up to 2+, the rate then being reduced; the males showed an increasingly reduced rate of growth after the 1+ year. Ford Walford plots gave L∞ results which corresponded closely in most cases with the largest observed specimens. Gonad development and maturation of males and females followed different patterns. Males matured during the 1 + year at a length of approximately 40 mm from which point their dry gonad weight remained at a steady 0.02–0.03% of the body weight. Females appeared to mature a year later and their ovary weight and oocyte diameter increased with fish age. A seasonal cycle in gonad development was evident in females. There was a greater proportion of females to males, especially in the older age group. Spawning time was estimated to be between June and July.  相似文献

Reproductive biology of gag in the southern Gulf of Mexico   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Aspects of the reproductive biology of gag Mycteroperca microlepis in the southern Gulf of Mexico were studied by following seasonal variations in the gonado‐somatic index and through histological examination of gonads. Gag were collected from inshore and offshore waters of the Campeche Bank, Yucatan, Mexico, between April 1996 and December 2001. This species is a protogynous hermaphrodite, and appeared to be depth‐size distributed. The smallest gag (9–49 cm L F) collected were all juvenile females, and were caught in inshore waters (1–10 m depth), while the largest (49–116 cm L F), mainly adult females, males and transitionals, were captured in offshore waters (33–167 m depth). Overall the offshore male to female ratio was female‐biased (1 : 3·3) and differed significantly from unity. The species spawns at depths of c . 50–53 m, from early winter to mid‐spring, with peak spawning activity occurring between January and March. Fifty per cent of females reached first maturity at 72·1 cm L F. At 103 cm L F, 50% of sampled females had changed into males. Gag can be considered a monandric species, and sexual transition for this grouper seemed to occur in fish distributed within a narrow size range (85–111 cm L F). The results are compared with those of other authors for gag stocks from the south‐east Atlantic coast of the U.S.A. and the north‐east Gulf of Mexico.  相似文献

The spawning pattern of the anadromous brown trout Salmo trutta was studied in Själsöån, a small stream in Gotland, Sweden, during eight winters between 1992–1993 and 1999–2000. The total length ( L T) at spawning was normally distributed (185–890 mm) for females and multimodal for males (300, 400 and 550 mm most frequent length classes). Spawning males were significantly younger (2+ to 4+ years) than females (3+ to 5+ years). The sex‐ratio at the beginning and at the end of the spawning season favoured males. The mean ±  s . d . number of spawners was 70 ± 16 individuals per year. Migration into and out of the stream occurred between November and June. The highest number of spawning fish was found in the stream at the end of November or at the beginning of December. Migration mainly occurred during high water flow and at night. The majority of the females entered the stream and spawned the same (29·3% of all the females) or the next night (32·8% of all the females) while males may have stayed for 2 to 3 weeks (21·3% of all the males) in the stream before spawning. Males usually remained much longer in the stream (mean ±  s . d . 45 ± 56 days) than females (16 ± 30 days). Females lost more mass in the stream (mean ±  s . d . 17·3 ± 8·6%) than males (7·7 ± 9·6%). For both sexes, mass loss was positively correlated with the time spent in the stream. Only 7·3% of the males and 5·7% of the females occurred in the stream for >1 year. Spawning took place only during the night.  相似文献

Tilapia production has increased in Aguamilpa Reservoir, in Nayarit, Mexico, in the last few years and represents a good economic activity for rural communities and the country. We determined growth parameters, mortality and reproductive aspects for 2413 specimens of blue tilapia Oreochromis aureus in this reservoir. Samples were taken monthly from July 2000 through June 2001, of which 1 371 were males and 1 042 were females. Standard length (SL) and total weight (TW) were measured in each organism. The SL/TW relationships through power models for sexes were determined. The growth parameters L infinity k, and t0 of the von Bertalanffy equation were estimated using frequency distribution of length through ELEFAN-I computer program. Finally the reproductive cycle and size of first maturity were established using morph chromatic maturity scale. The results suggested that the males and females had negative allometric growth (b < 3). Significant differences were found between SL/TW model for the sexes, suggesting separate models for males and females. Results indicate that there are no differences in growth rates between sexes; the proposed parameters were L infinity = 43.33 cm standard length, k = 0.36/year and t0 = -0.43 years. Natural and fishing mortality coefficients were 0.83/year and 1.10/year, respectively. The estimated exploitation rate (0.57/year) suggested that during the study period the fishery showed signs of overfishing. Blue tilapia reproduces year-round; the highest activity occurs from January through May and size of first maturity was 23 cm SL. We conclude that it is necessary to establish a minimum catch size in this reservoir based on the reproductive behavior of this species.  相似文献

We review our studies of mate choice with two MHC‐congenic strains of mice. This work was stimulated by findings from Yamazaki and colleagues showing that male mice exhibited mate preferences for females whose MHC‐haplotype was different from their own, while female mice exhibited either no preference or a weak preference for males of a particular MHC‐haplotype (see Beauchamp et al., 1988). Since these findings were unexpected (mate choice theory predicts that females will be more selective than males), we studied the preferences of mice from two additional MHC‐congenic strains to assess the generality of the previous findings. Specifically, the goals of our research were: (1) to determine the mate preferences of congenic mice with MHC‐haplotypes derived from wild populations, (2) to compare the mate preferences of male and female mice in a test situation where each sex has a clear opportunity to make a choice, and (3) to estimate effects of cross‐fostering on each sex. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The mating success of individually identified males of a stream goby, Rhinogobius sp. CB (cross‐band type), was recorded over one breeding season. One to 3 year‐old males were active in mating, but 3 year‐old males, which accounted for 36% of the population, amounted to c . 70% of the total males guarding eggs in the nest. Three quarters of the breeding males had only one brooding cycle, but the others had two or three. All the latter males changed their nest sites between cycles within a riffle. In 1 and 2 year‐old males, the number of brooding cycles contributed more to the mating success than egg mass size in one brooding cycle. For mating success of 3 year‐old males, the egg mass size in one brooding cycle, which can be enhanced by spawning with a large female or multiple females, was as important as the number of brooding cycles. These male reproductive tactics could be attributed to the age‐related ability of nest construction and mate acquisition.  相似文献

Longfinned eels Anguilla reinhardtii were captured by both fishery‐dependent and independent sampling methods from three rivers in New South Wales, south‐eastern Australia. Growth rates were examined in two zones (fresh water and tidal) in the Hacking, Hawkesbury and Clarence Rivers. Mean annual growth increments of sampled longfinned eels ranged from 30 to 60 mm year−1 using age‐length analyses and up to 167 mm year−1 based on tag‐recapture model estimates (GROTAG), with both methods showing high intra‐ and inter‐population variability. Growth was significantly faster in younger (5–15 years) fish than older (>15 years) fish, with females growing an average 10 mm year−1 faster than males of similar age and capture location. Longfinned eels found in tidal areas grew significantly faster than those in non‐tidal freshwater areas as a result of longer growing seasons in the highly productive estuarine habitats. Other possible factors influencing variability in growth rates for this species include habitat preference, density and fishing pressure.  相似文献

Temporal and spatial variation in growth of juvenile Atlantic salmon   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Spatial and temporal variation in length‐at‐age and environmental factors affecting variation in growth rate of juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar were studied using data from a long‐term study in the River Stjørdalselva, central Norway. Mean annual instantaneous growth rate among 1+ and 2+year juvenile Atlantic salmon varied between 0·59 and 1·50 g g−1 year−1 and mean instantaneous daily growth rate of young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) varied between 0·013 and 0·033 g g−1 day−1. Between year variation in growth was larger than the within year intra‐watercourse spatial variation. For YOY and 1+year Atlantic salmon, a major part of the observed between year variation in growth rates was explained by variation in mean daily water discharge and spring temperature. For 2+year juvenile Atlantic salmon, mean daily water discharge and cohort density were the only variables to significantly explain variation in growth rates. A large part of the within water‐course spatial variation could not be explained by temperature variations and juvenile Atlantic salmon in the uppermost areas of the river, experiencing the lowest ambient temperatures during the growth period, displayed the highest growth rates. Within the baselines set by temperature, biotic and abiotic factors connected to water flow regime and variation in food availability are suggested to be a major determinants of the temporal and spatial variation in juvenile Atlantic salmon growth rates.  相似文献

Plasma testosterone and 17β‐oestradiol concentrations, differential leukocyte counts and proportion of dead Rhipidocotyle campanula gill parasites (parasite resistance) were determined five times during a year in two populations of roach Rutilus rutilus and analysed for seasonal and gender differences. In addition to the above immune variables, plasma Immunoglobulin M (IgM) concentration, chemiluminescence and migration differential of head kidney phagocytes, size of the spleen, haematocrit and total leukocyte count were correlated with sex hormones for each population, sampling time and sex separately, using condition factor as a partial correlate. There were no clear gender differences in the determined immune variables. Both testosterone and oestradiol concentrations were lowest after the spawning in June. Oestradiol was higher in females than in males, but testosterone was present in equal concentrations in both sexes. Statistically significant correlations between sex hormones and immune variables were rare and mainly without any patterns with respect to population, sex or sampling date. The meta‐analysis on individual correlations, however, revealed a positive relationship of plasma testosterone concentration to chemiluminescence of head kidney phagocytes, plasma IgM concentration and the proportion of dead R. campanula to all R. campanula on the gills. In the meta‐analysis, the concentration of oestradiol was not found to correlate with any of the studied immune variables.  相似文献

The age and growth of the round stingray Urobatis halleri was determined using vertebral sections from animals collected at Seal Beach, California from 2002 to 2005. Annual periodicity was validated from U. halleri injected with oxytetracycline and maintained in captivity over a 2 year period ( n = 7). The coefficients estimated by the von Bertalanffy growth model were the disc width asymptote ( W D∞) (286 mm for males and 224 mm for females) and K (0·09 year−1 for males and 0·15 year−1 for females). The age structure of the population consisted of mostly older, mature males and females. Age at maturity was estimated at 3·80 years for females and 3·75 years for males, and the maximum assessed age was 14 years old. Males were more numerous than females throughout the year; however, from May to September, females outnumbered males. The U. halleri age and growth coefficients were comparable to other species in the family Urolophidae. Based on the seasonality and age structure of this population, Seal Beach offers warm-water refuge for U. halleri of reproductive maturity, and the U. halleri at Seal Beach may garner some behavioural thermoregulation benefit.  相似文献

Twenty‐one allozyme loci in samples of wild‐caught and hatchery‐reared Indian major carps from Bangladesh were analysed. Bayesian model‐based clustering analysis revealed the presence of four taxa, corresponding to the three known species along with a fourth unknown taxon present in two hatchery samples. Individual admixture coefficients showed that 24% of all hatchery‐reared fishes were hybrids, whereas a single hybrid was observed in the wild‐caught samples. Only catla Catla catla × rohu Labeo rohita and mrigal Cirrhinus cirrhosus × rohu hybrids were observed, the vast majority of which were F1 hybrids, though five individuals represented putative backcrosses. Mitochondrial DNA analysis revealed that catla × rohu hybridization primarily involved catla males and rohu females, whereas mrigal × rohu hybrids primarily resulted from rohu males and mrigal females. Despite the high percentage of F1‐hybrids in hatchery samples, reproductive barriers among species have so far precluded widespread introgression. Continued hybridization may eventually lead to a breakdown of species barriers, thereby compromising the genetic integrity of the species in the wild, and leading to production losses in aquaculture.  相似文献

The biology of the deep-water shrimp Solenocera acuminata has been poorly studied in spite of the commercial interest of the species on the continental slope of French Guiana. In order to establish the distribution, the abundance, the reproduction and the growth of the species, four scientific surveys were conducted on the Guianese slope in 1990 and 1991, and samples from commercial fisheries were also regularly observed from 1988 to 1993. S. acuminata is only caught during the night, at a depth of about 200 m where catch rates reach 10 kg/h/trawl. The females show two seasons of sexual maturation, in May–June and in November–December. The parameters of the Von Bertalanffy growth equation were estimated from the size frequency distributions for males and females separately. Maximum life span of the species is about 2 years, and sexual maturity of females is reached at the end of the first year of life.  相似文献

Age, growth and mortality were analysed for red bandfish, Cepola macrophthalma, collected in the eastern Adriatic from May 2002 to June 2003. The oldest male was estimated to be age 4, the oldest female age 3. Parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth equation are: L = 55.0 cm (SE = 0.1), K = 0.445 (SE = 0.074) and t0 = ?0.1 (SE = 0.001) for males, and L = 48.9 cm (SE = 0.167), K = 0.395 (SE = 0.062) and t0 = ?0.009 (SE = 0.02) for females. The overall sex ratio was 1.42 : 1 in favour of males. Total mortality, corresponding to the slope of the descending limb of the catch curve, was Z = 1.20 per year for females and Z = 1.23 per year for males. Exploitation ratios were E = 0.479 for females and E = 0.433 for males.  相似文献
