The introduction and spread of the black rat Rattus rattus is believed to have caused the worst decline of any vertebrate taxon in Galápagos. However, the “extinct” Santiago rice rat Nesoryzomys swarthi has recently been rediscovered in sympatry with R. rattus providing the first exception to this general pattern of displacement. We carried out an exploratory investigation of this novel system with the aim of identifying patterns that may facilitate the apparent coexistence of the two species. We carried out an extensive survey of Santiago Island to map the current distribution of the endemic rice rat and to explore broad scale distribution–habitat associations. We then used live-trapping, radio-tracking, and spool-and-line tracking to quantify abundance–habitat correlations and to test for evidence of interspecific spatial segregation, alteration of N. swarthi activity patterns (spatial and temporal), and microhabitat partitioning. We found that N. swarthi has disappeared from part of its historical range and appears to be restricted to a 14 km stretch of the north-central coast, characterised by high density of the cactus Opuntia galapageia. In contrast, the generalist R. rattus was found at all survey sites. We found no evidence of spatial segregation, and home range size, temporal activity and density of N. swarthi did not vary with local density of R. rattus. However, pre-dawn and post-dusk N. swarthi activity levels increased with R. rattus density perhaps reflecting an increase in foraging effort necessary to compensate for the costs of interspecific exploitation or interference competition. The distribution, microhabitat selection, and abundance–habitat relations of N. swarthi suggest that the endemic cactus O. galapageia may facilitate interspecific coexistence. Further research should include a comparison of inter-seasonal resource preference and foraging activity of the two species coupled with replicated field experiments to confirm and quantify competition and to elucidate the mechanism of competitive coexistence.  相似文献

Endemic Nesoryzomys swarthi and invasive Rattus rattus exist in unlikely sympatry in Galápagos as female N. swarthi suffer from competition with R. rattus. This study evaluates the role of feeding habits in facilitating their co-occurrence. Spool-and-line tracking of 85 N. swarthi and 33 R. rattus was used to quantify their selected diets, foods of which were used in captive trials of 46 N. swarthi and 34 R. rattus to quantify their preferred diets. Selected diets were compared between species and seasons using niche measures, and contrasted to preferred diets to qualify inferences about competition. Diet overlap was highest in the wet season when food—particularly fruit—abundance was highest and R. rattus diet breadth was broadest. Preferred and selected diets were marginally correlated for R. rattus but uncorrelated for N. swarthi, suggesting that R. rattus interfere with N. swarthi foraging. Diet overlap was highest between female N. swarthi and R. rattus, perhaps due to female breeding requirements. Male N. swarthi avoided R. rattus-preferred foods, possibly to avoid aggressive encounters with R. rattus. During the dry season, when foods declined and the R. rattus population crashed, diet overlap was lowest as R. rattus diet narrowed in the absence of fruits. Female, and particularly male, N. swarthi diet broadened, with emphasis on acquiring Opuntia foods but N. swarthi-preferred and selected diets were uncorrelated, suggesting that their foraging was inhibited by R. rattus. In conclusion, the narrower diet breadth of R. rattus in contrast to N. swarthi suggests that this species may be less adapted to food acquisition at this site, particularly when fruits are absent. The year-round presence of R. rattus, however, appears to inhibit N. swarthi foraging for its preferred diet, and they instead specialise on Opuntia foods, which were uneaten by R. rattus and may provide N. swarthi with a localised competition refuge from encounters with R. rattus. This study was planned to assess the foraging activity of ecological important avian species the N. coromandelianus at Dulahara pond of Ratanpur, Chhattisgarh. In present work we observed the effect of “time of the day” and “photoperiod” on daytime foraging activities of N. coromandelianus. The most applied foraging skills of N. coromandelianus were documented for two repetitive days each for the period of long days (March and April 2015) and short days (December 2015 and January 2016). One-way ANOVA (by SPSS 16.0) was employed to observe the effects of “photoperiod” and “time of the day” on daytime foraging pattern in order to the frequency of foraging techniques. The rhythms in daytime foraging movement were estimated by means of Cosinor rhythmometry at 24 h and 12 h. The current study clarified that the N. coromandelianus mostly applied three main techniques viz., head and neck dipping, diving and striking on which both the diving and striking were the most employed technique while the head and neck dipping was less employed technique during foraging. Moreover, the N. coromandelianus maximally involved for foraging activities during the short day than long day.  相似文献

Length–weight relationships (LWRs) were estimated for 36 mesopelagic fish species collected from the equatorial and tropical Atlantic encompassing several oceanographic regions: oligotrophic, equatorial, Cape Blanc, Cape Verde and the Canary Islands. The sample was composed of myctophids (25 species), gonostomatids (5), sternoptychids (3), stomiids (2) and phosichthyids (1). The species were clustered according to body shape: “short-deep” (sternoptychids), “elongate” (gonostomatids, stomiids and some phosichthyids) and “fusiform” (myctophids and some phosichthyids). Three types of weight and LWRs were considered: wet weight (WW), eviscerated wet weight (eWW) and eviscerated dry weight (eDW). The study demonstrated that most species present a positive allometric growth, independent of the weight used. However, the allometric value varied in 40–50% of species depending on the type of weight considered. Significant variations linked to fish morphology were found in the relationship between the slope and intercept of the LWR equation. Significant differences were also noted in the water content linked to fish body shape. Based on the distributions of several species we compare their fitness between oceanographic regions using the relative condition factor (Krel). Except for Diaphus brachycephalus (oligotrophic vs. equatorial waters) and Lampanyctus alatus (equatorial, Cape Blanc, Cape Verde and the Canary Islands), no regional significant differences were observed in the species analysed.  相似文献

A molecular phylogeny based on DNA/DNA hybridization revealed that the Sylvia-Parisoma complex is monophyletic and includes three main groups of species, the “mid-European” warblers, the genus Parisoma, and the “eu-Mediterranean” Sylvia species sensu stricto. The latter can be assigned to three main clusters, a “West-Mediterranean” group, a “Central-Mediterranean group”, and an “East-Mediterranean” group. The radiation of the whole complex is much more ancient than formerly believed. It started ca 12–13 Ma ago and the ancestors of the main extant groups differentiated during the Pliocene. Only speciation events within the “eu-Mediterranean” lineages occurred during the Pleistocene. The paleoclimatical and paleoecological history of the Mediterranean region is too complicated to provide any evidence for direct relationships between past events and evolutionary steps of these taxa which did not leave any reliable fossil record. However, some major speciation events may be related to well documented climatical crises as well as paleobotanical data. The largely man-induced extension of matorrals over several millenia presumably extended the range of several species that were formerly much more restricted, which complicates reconstruction of the spatio-temporal course of speciation.  相似文献

The dynamics of annual species are strongly tied to their capacity for recruitment each year. We examined how competition and propagule availability influence recruitment and appearance and tracked survivorship of an annual species of marine macroalgae, the bull kelp (Nereocystis luetkeana), which serves as major biogenic habitat in the Salish Sea of Washington State. We hypothesized that (i) juvenile N. luetkeana would exhibit a seasonal appearance as a cohort in the spring and (ii) competition for space would be more limiting than propagules (spores) to recruitment at sites adjacent to established N. luetkeana beds. We tagged N. luetkeana recruits in the field to track appearance and survivorship across seasons (spring, summer, fall, and winter), using a two‐factor crossed design to assess effects of competition and propagule availability on appearance of new N. luetkeana sporophytes. Survivorship of N. luetkeana recruits was low and, whereas most new individuals arose in the spring, some appeared in every season. New N. luetkeana recruits also appeared the earliest (median 8 weeks vs. >20 weeks) after experimental “seeding” in the spring as compared to other seasons. Eliminating macroalgal competitors (“clearing”) influenced the appearance of recruits more than enhancement of propagules in the spring. An improved understanding of factors regulating the seasonal appearance of new N. luetkeana sporophytes furthers our understanding of this crucial foundation species' appearance and persistence across seasons, which is increasingly important as global ocean conditions change, and highlights the importance of studying organisms with complex life histories across multiple stages and geographical regions.  相似文献

A taxonomic study was carried out on 20 strains received as “Mycobacterium” rhodochrous. These strains were exceedingly similar to the strains of the genus Gordona recently proposed by the present author. Out of the 20 strains studied, 10 strains, including two strains previously named Rhodococcus rhodochrous, formed one cluster and were considered to belong to a species of the genus Gordona. The species has been named Gordona rhodochroa (Zopf; Overbeck; Gordon et Mihm) Tsukamura comb. nov. Two strains were considered to belong to the species Gordona rubra. One of the two had initially been named Mycobacterium rubropertinctum. It was considered from the facts that the specific epithet for the species should be “rubropertinta” and the name Gordona rubra be changed to Gordona rubropertincta. The other strains seemed to belong to some other species. In conclusion, the species “Mycobacterium” rhodochrous appears to be divided into several species of the genus Gordona.  相似文献

Tetrahymena mitochondrial cox1 barcodes and nuclear SSUrRNA sequences are particularly effective at distinguishing among its many cryptic species. In a project to learn more about Tetrahymena natural history, the majority of >1,000 Tetrahymena‐like fresh water isolates were assigned to established Tetrahymena species with the remaining assigned to 37 new species of Tetrahymena, nine new species of Dexiostoma and 12 new species of Glaucoma. Phylogenetically, all but three Tetrahymena species belong to the well‐established “australis” or “borealis” clades; the minority forms a divergent “paravorax” clade. Most Tetrahymena species are micronucleate, but others are exclusively amicronucleate. The self‐splicing intron of the LSUrRNA precursor is absent in Dexiostoma and Glaucoma and was likely acquired subsequent to the “australis/borealis” split; in some instances, its sequence is diagnostic of species. Tetrahymena americanis, T. elliotti, T. gruchyi n. sp., and T. borealis, together accounted for >50% of isolates, consistent with previous findings for established species. The biogeographic range of species found previously in Austria, China, and Pakistan was extended to the Nearctic; some species show evidence of population structure consistent with endemism. Most species were most frequently collected from ponds or lakes, while others, particularly Dexiostoma species, were collected most often from streams or rivers. The results suggest that perhaps hundreds of species remain to be discovered, particularly if collecting is global and includes hosts of parasitic forms.  相似文献

Knowledge of humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) foraging on feeding grounds is becoming increasingly important as the growing North Pacific population recovers from commercial whaling and consumes more prey, including economically important fishes. We explored spatial and temporal (interannual, within‐season) variability in summer foraging by humpback whales along the eastern side of the Kodiak Archipelago as described by stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope ratios of humpback whale skin (n = 118; 2004–2013). The trophic level (TL) of individual whales was calculated using basal food web δ15N values collected within the study area. We found evidence for the existence of two subaggregations of humpback whales (“North,” “South”) on the feeding ground that fed at different TLs throughout the study period. Linear mixed models suggest that within an average year, Kodiak humpback whales forage at a consistent TL during the feeding season. TL estimates support mixed consumption of fish and zooplankton species in the “North” (mean ± SE; 3.3 ± 0.1) and predominant foraging on zooplankton in the “South” (3.0 ± 0.1). This trend appears to reflect spatial differences in prey availability, and thus, our results suggest North Pacific humpback whales may segregate on feeding aggregations and target discrete prey species.  相似文献

We provide molecular systematics of a microporidian species, Nosema fumiferanae, one of the most common natural enemies of spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana. The uncharacterized flanking region upstream of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA and the complete rRNA cistron of N. fumiferanae was 4,769 bp long. The organization of the rRNA gene was 5′‐LSU rRNA‐ITS‐SSU rRNA‐IGS‐5S‐3′ and corresponded primarily to most insect (i.e. lepidopteran) Nosema species identified and classified to date. Phylogenetic analysis based on the complete rRNA cistron indicated that N. fumiferanae is closely related to Nosema plutellae and is correctly assigned to the “true” Nosema group. Suggestions were provided on a criterion to delineate the “true” Nosema from other microsporidian species.  相似文献

Mortality and turnover of some of the most characteristic woody plants of Galápagos have been studied during 25 to 32 years on the islands of Santa Cruz, Santa Fe and Pinta. Scalesia pedunculata, S. helleri subsp. helleri and S. baurii subsp. hopkinsii display comparable patterns of high mortality, rapid turnover and relatively short life expectancy, but occur in different habitats and islands in the archipelago. In contrast, Opuntia echios var. gigantea, O. echios var. barringtonensis, O. galapageia var. galapageia, and Bursera graveolens display low mortality (especially of adults), slow turnover and long life expectancies, and occur in similar habitats on different islands. Conditions that favour one taxon may at the same time negatively affect another taxon, and adults, juveniles and seedlings within the taxa may react differently to the same environmental factors. In the humid zone species S. pedunculata, diebacks may be triggered by strong El Niño events, and mass seedling events are associated with El Niños and a subsequent year of drought. In the other taxa investigated, which are arid zone species, the response to strong El Niño events is less pronounced and, in some respects, also different. The differences in mortality, turnover and life expectancy of the species of Scalesia on the one hand and the Opuntia taxa and Bursera on the other, suggest that both humid and arid vegetation types containing species of Scalesia should get higher conservation priority than arid vegetation types without species of Scalesia.  相似文献

The composition and distribution of the macrobenthic molluscs in Evros Delta (North Aegean Sea) were investigated by quantitative sampling. The molluscan distribution shows a zonation mainly related to the degree of “confinement”. Based on similarity in distribution among stations, 2 groups of species were distinguished. One group includes marine species (Tellina tenuis, Bittium reticulatum) found only in coastal stations and the second group is typical of estuarine species (Hydrobia acuta, Abra ovata and Cerastoderma glaucum) distributed in almost all stations. Spatial fluctuations of the 3 estuarine species reflect their preferences in the various parameters (“confinement”, salinity, grain size and organic matter of sediment). The most isolated stations support the highest values of total mollusc abundance and biomass.  相似文献

This study evaluated the phylogenetic relationship among samples of “Chantransia” stage of the Batrachospermales and Thoreales from several regions of the world based on sequences of two genes—the plastid‐encoded RUBISCO LSU gene (rbcL) and the nuclear SSU ribosomal DNA gene (SSU rDNA). All sequences of “Chantransia macrospora” were shown to belong to Batrachospermum macrosporum based on both molecular markers, confirming evidence from previous studies. In contrast, nine species are now associated with “Chantransia pygmaea,” including seven species of the Batrachospermales and two of the Thoreales. Therefore, the presence of “C. macrospora” in a stream can be considered reliable evidence that it belongs to B. macrosporum, whereas the occurrence of “C. pygmaea” does not allow the recognition of any particular species, since it is associated with at least nine species. Affinities of “Chantransia” stages to particular taxa were congruent for 70.5% of the samples comparing the rbcL and SSU analyses, which were associated with the same or closely related species for both markers. Sequence divergences have been reported in the “Chantransia” stage in comparison to the respective gametophyte, and this matter deserves further attention.  相似文献

Lepidopteran stem borers are among the most important insect pests of maize, sorghum and sugarcane in sub‐Saharan Africa. Except for Chilo partellus, the other stem borer pests in Ethiopia are indigenous to Africa and are assumed to have coevolved with some native grasses and sedges in the natural habitat. In addition to pest species, natural habitats harbour diverse non‐economic stem borer species, some of which are new to science. However, with the growing threats to natural habitats, some non‐economic stem borer species may switch or expand their host ranges to include cultivated crops and evolve as “new” pests. Besides host switch, some of the unknown species currently limited to natural habitats may disappear. We examined the diversity, abundance and interactions of lepidopteran stem borers and their wild host plants in five different vegetation mosaics in Ethiopia. The stem borer species diversity varied among vegetation mosaics and host plants. Forty‐four stem borer species belonging to 14 different genera in the families of Noctuidae, Crambidae, Pyralidae and Tortricidae were recorded from 34 wild host plants and through light trap. Among these families, Noctuidae was the highest in species richness in which 31 species were identified, out of which 15 species and two genera were new to science. This paper discusses the ecological interpretation of host plant–stem borer species interactions, particularly in relation to habitat disturbances.  相似文献

A growing number of molecular studies have identified mitochondrial replacement among closely related animal species, but there has been limited investigation into the phylogenetic, geographic, and temporal patterns, especially in more inclusive clades. We present a phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences collected from mitochondrial and nuclear genes sampled from all 20 species of the darter clade Nothonotus and reveal extensive mtDNA replacement in N. rufilineatus. Using phylogenetic trees, haplotype networks, analysis of molecular variance (AMOVAs), and distributions of minimum pairwise genetic distances, we discovered that the mtDNA of N. rufilineatus has been replaced by that of different sympatric species of Nothonotus in different river drainages. In the Cumberland River, N. rufilineatus populations were fixed for N. camurus mtDNA. In the upper Tennessee River, N. rufilineatus contained N. chlorobranchius and N. camurus mtDNA. Most surprising, our analyses indicated that N. rufilineatus has acted as a “conduit species,” facilitating the introgression of N. chlorobranchius mtDNA into N. camurus in the upper Tennessee River. We identified several potential mechanisms for the observed pattern of introgression, and suggest experiments to assess their relative contributions. Comparisons among darter subclades indicated that the mitochondrial lineage of the clade is most influential in determining if the lineage is a mitochondrial donor or recipient.  相似文献

The crescent sculpture of the so‐called “Xestoleberis‐spot” develops inside the calcified valve of the family Xestoleberididae. Electron microscopic observations on both, intermoult and postmoult stages of Xestoleberis species reveal that the “Xestoleberis‐spot” system consists of three elements; two calcified chambers, a vesicle of electron‐dense material and an uncalcified procuticle. The formation and function of the “Xestoleberis‐spot” system are discussed. In conclusion, the “Xestoleberis‐spot” system functions as the muscle attachment site for several antennal muscles, and provides the material for chitinous fibers in the exocuticle of outer lamella. The unique cuticular structures of the family Xestoleberididae are due to the “Xestoleberis‐spot” system.  相似文献

A national‐scale study of outcrossing potential within Chilean vascular flora was conducted using an upgraded algorithm, which adds parameters such as pollinator agents, climate, and geographic conditions. Datasets were organized and linked in a Web platform ( www.flujogenico.cl ), in which the development of a total outcrossing potential (TOP) predictor was formulated. The TOP predictor is the engine in the Web platform, which models the effect of a type of agricultural practice on others (coexistence calculation mode) and on the environment (biodiversity calculation mode). The scale for TOP results uses quintiles in order to define outcrossing potential between species as “very low,” “low,” “medium,” “high,” or “very high.” In a coexistence analysis considering 256 species (207 genera), the 10 highest TOP values were for genera Citrus, Prunus, Trifolium, Brassica, Allium, Eucalyptus, Cucurbita, Solanum, Lollium, and Lotus. The highest TOP for species in this analysis fell at “high” potential, 4.9% of the determined values. In biodiversity mode, seven out of 256 cultivated species (2.7%) were native, and 249 (97.3%) corresponded to introduced species. The highest TOP was obtained in the genera Senecio, Calceolaria, Viola, Solanum, Poa, Alstroemeria, Valeriana, Vicia, Atriplex, and Campanula, showing “high” potential in 4.9% of the values. On the other hand, 137 genetically modified species, including the commercial and pre‐commercial developments, were included and represented 100 genera. Among these, 22 genera had relatives (i.e., members of the same genus) in the native/introduced group. The genera with the highest number of native/introduced relatives ranged from one (Ipomea, Limonium, Carica, Potentilla, Lotus, Castanea, and Daucus) to 66 species (Solanum). The highest TOP was obtained when the same species were coincident in both groups, such as for Carica chilensis, Prosopis tamarugo, and Solanum tuberosum. Results are discussed from the perspective of assessing the possible impact of cultivated species on Chilean flora biodiversity. In this paper, we describe the threats faced by Picathartes populations around two urban centres in Sierra Leone and Cameroon and outline some of the possible lines of conservation action. These populations are small and on the brink of local extinction unless immediate action is taken now. It is postulated that proper management of the unique situation of these “urban Picathartes populations” could contribute to local eco-tourism revenues, whilst ensuring the long-term survival of the birds. Some of our recent results on the breeding biology and ecology of the two species form the background against which conservation issues are discussed.  相似文献

Foliar nitrogen (N) isotope ratios (δ15N) are used as a proxy for N-cycling processes, including the “openness” of the N cycle and the use of distinct N sources, but there is little experimental support for such proxies in lowland tropical forest. To address this, we examined the δ15N values of soluble soil N and canopy foliage of four tree species after 13 years of factorial N and P addition to a mature lowland rainforest. We hypothesized that N addition would lead to 15N-enriched soil N forms due to fractionating losses, whereas P addition would reduce N losses as the plants and microbes adjusted their stoichiometric demands. Chronic N addition increased the concentration and δ15N value of soil nitrate and δ15N in live and senesced leaves in two of four tree species, but did not affect ammonium or dissolved organic N. Phosphorus addition significantly increased foliar δ15N in one tree species and elicited significant N × P interactions in two others due to a reduction in foliar δ15N enrichment under N and P co-addition. Isotope mixing models indicated that three of four tree species increased their use of nitrate relative to ammonium following N addition, supporting the expectation that tropical trees use the most available form of mineral N. Previous observations that anthropogenic N deposition in this tropical region have led to increasing foliar δ15N values over decadal time-scales is now mechanistically linked to greater usage of 15N-enriched nitrate.  相似文献
