Effect of sowing date on the optimum plant density of winter wheat   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Pressure on financial margins in UK wheat production is driving a review of all inputs, and seed represents one of the largest financial inputs in wheat production. The potential savings through exploiting the crop's ability to compensate for reduced population are, therefore, attractive. Field experiments were carried out at ADAS Rosemaund (Herefordshire, UK) in 1996/97, 1997/98 and 1998/99 to investigate the effect of sowing date on dry matter growth and yield responses of winter wheat to reduced plant population. There were three target sowing dates (late‐Septembr, mid‐October and mid‐November), six seed rates (20, 40, 80, 160, 320 and 640 seeds m?2) and four varieties (Cadenza, Haven, Soissons and Spark). Grain yield was significantly affected by plant population with a mean reduction from 9.2 to 5.5 t ha?1 as plant number was reduced from 336 to 13 m?2. In addition, there was a significant interaction between plant density and sowing date. There was, however, no interaction between variety and plant population in terms of yield, except when lodging affected high plant populations of lodging susceptible varieties. The experiments demonstrated scope for reducing plant populations below the current target of 250–300 plants m?2; however, the degree of reduction was dependent on sowing date. Over the three years, the average economic optimum plant density was 62 plants m?2 for late‐September, 93 plants m?2 for mid‐October, and 139 plants m?2 for mid‐November sowings. Compensation for reduced population was due to increased shoot number per plant, increased grain number per ear and to a lesser extent increased grain size. Higher economic optimum plant densities at later sowing dates were due to reduced tiller production and hence ear number per plant. The other compensatory mechanisms were unaffected by sowing date.  相似文献

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is currently undergoing intensive breeding efforts to improve biomass yield. Consideration must be made regarding the relative importance of spaced plantings to sward plots for evaluation and selection for increased biomass yield. It has previously been suggested that selection schemes using secondary plant morphological traits as selection criteria within spaced plantings may be an efficient method of making genetic gain. The objective of this study was to empirically test the effects of direct selection for plant height, tiller count, flowering date, and visual selection for biomass yield within spaced plantings on biomass yield and morphology traits within sward plots. Divergently selected populations for each trait were developed from the WS4U upland tetraploid germplasm and evaluated for biomass yield at five locations in Wisconsin during two growing seasons. Significant variation was observed between maternal parents of the selected populations for both selected and nonselected traits. Despite substantial differences between parent plant populations for plant morphology, significant differences were not observed for sward-plot biomass yield or sward-plot morphology relative to the base population. Late flowering selections yielded 2.0 Mg/ha greater biomass than early flowering selections (29 % increase). Plant height within sward plots was observed to have a strong positive correlation with biomass yield. Tiller count was observed to have a weak correlation with biomass yield. Based on the observed results, it is recommended that greater emphasis be placed on evaluation of biomass yield using sward plots.  相似文献

I studied demography in three populations of the clonal, cleistogamous herb Oxalis acetosella during three growing seasons, to assess the impact of seedling recruitment relative to ramet recruitment on its population dynamics. I followed each plant in permanent plots, and stage-classified it according to origin (sexually or vegetatively derived) and reproductive status. I calculated between-year transition probabilities, and sexual and vegetative fecundities, and used them in projection matrix analyses to simulate the development of populations and obtain the elasticity of each life-history event.
In general, non-flowering adults was the most numerous stage class and flowering new ramets the rarest, whereas the proportions of the other stage classes varied among populations and years. The negative correlation between plant density and survival was not very strong, and mortality seemed to be largely density-independent. Simulated population growth rates (λ) indicated that one of the populations is declining and the other two are growing, although slowly. The highest elasticities were usually those of stasis in adult plants, whereas elasticities of other matrix entries were low and highly variable. λ was positively correlated with the elasticities of seedling production and survival but negatively correlated with the elasticity of adult survival, indicating that seedling recruitment is more favourable for population growth than is adult stasis. There were no correlations between λ on the one hand and the elasticities of ramet production and survival on the other.
The results suggest that recruitment from seedlings is important for the growth and long-term maintenance of O. acetosella populations, as a complement to the rather low vegetative propagation. In this context cleistogamy is an adaptive strategy, maximizing total seed output.  相似文献

Summary Ramets of the understory herb, Aster acuminatus, were transplanted from two source populations into eight understory garden sites that varied in light and soil moisture levels. Ramet growth, clonal growth, flowering and survivorship were monitored for three growing seasons. Large differences among gardens in ramet growth, clonal growth and flowering developed in the first growing season and increased in the next two years. This variation was positively correlated with garden light level but not at all with soil moisture. Mortality rates were low in all gardens and showed that genets from any particular source could survive over a broad range of environmental conditions. There was no conclusive evidence for any source population differences in the capacity to survive or grow in different environments. The rapid, light-induced responses of transplanted ramets resulted in garden populations very similar in appearance to natural populations experiencing similar light regimes. These results combined with those from other studies of A. acuminatus provide strong evidence for the importance of light in explaining population patterns and dynamics in this species.

Under climate warming, plants will undergo novel selective pressures to adjust reproductive timing. Adjustment between reproductive phenology and environment is expected to be higher in arctic and alpine habitats because the growing season is considerably short. As early- and late-flowering species reproduce under very different environmental conditions, selective pressures on flowering phenology and potential effects of climate change are likely to differ between them. However, there is no agreement on the magnitude of the benefits and costs of early- vs. late-flowering species under a global warming scenario. In spite of its relevance, phenotypic selection on flowering phenology has rarely been explored in alpine plants and never in Mediterranean high mountain species, where selective pressures are very different due to the summer drought imposed over the short growth season. We hypothesized that late-flowering plants in Mediterranean mountains should present stronger selective pressures towards early onset of reproduction than early-flowering species, because less water is available in the soil as growing season progresses. We performed selection analyses on flowering onset and duration in two high mountain species of contrasting phenology. Since phenotypic selection can be highly context-dependent, we studied several populations of each species for 2 years, covering their local altitudinal ranges and their different microhabitats. Surrogates of biotic selective agents, like fruitset for pollinators and flower and fruit loss for flower and seed predators, were included in the analysis. Differences between the early- and the late-flowering species were less than expected. A consistent negative correlational selection of flowering onset and duration was found affecting plant fitness, i.e., plants that bloomed earlier flowered for longer periods improving plant fitness. Nevertheless, the late-flowering species may experience higher risks under climate warming because in extremely warm and dry years the earlier season does not bring about a longer flowering duration due to summer drought.  相似文献

Dense plant cultivation is an efficient approach to utilize the maximum inputs for increasing maize production. However, dense plant populations may prone to lodging as it results in increased plant height and reduced culm diameter; therefore, we hypothesized that weaker stems may be responsible for maize lodging. In this study, we examined the regulatory effects of paclobutrazol under two commonly used application methods (seed-soaking and seed-dressing). Seed-soaking with paclobutrazol at the rate of 0 (CK1), 200 (S1), 300 (S2), and 400 (S3) mg L?1, while seed-dressing at the rate of 0 (CK2), 1.5 (D1), 2.5 (D2), and 3.5 (D3) g kg?1 were used. Results showed that paclobutrazol improved the culm physical strength by increasing the rind penetration strength, stalk breaking strength, culm diameter, wall thickness, and dry weight per unit length of basal third internode, compared to control plants. Moreover, paclobutrazol reduced the internode length, plant height, ear height, center of gravity height and lodging rate in both growing seasons. In addition, more lignin was accumulated in the basal internode and the activities of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), peroxidase (POD), cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD) and 4-coumarate: CoA ligase (4CL) increased with paclobutrazol, and their maximum values were observed in the S2 and D3 treatments, resulting in strong lodging resistance. Lignin content was positively and significantly correlated with the rind penetration strength, breaking strength of internode, and activities of PAL, 4CL, POD, and CAD, while significantly and negatively correlated with lodging percentage. The present findings suggested that 300 mg L?1 and 3.5 g kg?1 of paclobutrazol may efficiently be utilized to minimize the risk of lodging, not only by manipulating plant height but also by enhancing culm physical strength and lignin accumulation in basal internodes.  相似文献

The effects of lodging and a plant growth regulator mixture on oilseed rape cv. Ariana were studied in three field experiments. Natural and artificially induced lodging treatments varying in time of imposition and severity were compared to a supported control. A mixture of paclobutrazol and chlormequat chloride was applied either as a spray or as paclobutrazol granules followed immediately by a chlormequat chloride spray.
In 1987, severe lodging treatments reduced yield by up to 52%. Yield penalties varied with the time at which lodging was imposed. Yield was inversely correlated with the ground cover of volunteers growing from shed seed under lodged crops.
In 1988, two experiments showed increased incidence of disease and decreases in seed yield and quality in lodged crops. Yield reductions were related to the severity of lodging. Lodging decreased oil contents and increased glucosinolate levels. PGR treatments reduced lodging and maintained yield at a level not significantly different to a supported control treatment. Oil contents were also similar in seed from PGR treated and control plots. Glucosinolate levels in PGR treated seed were similar to control levels in one experiment and intermediate to those from control and artificially lodged plots in another experiment.
The results are discussed in relation to the use of PGRs to prevent lodging in 'double zero' varieties of oilseed rape, and the potential losses from using ground vehicles to apply pesticides after flowering.  相似文献

Seed production and predispersal seed predation in the shrub Acacia suaveolens were examined over 3 consecutive years in eight populations in south-eastern Australia. Seed-crop sizes varied both between and within populations of different ages. Seed production was maximal in the first one to four flowering seasons after establishment, and then declined with plant age. The size of the annual seed-crop was also influenced by rainfall for that year. Predispersal seed predation varies between populations over fruiting seasons with the initial large seed-crops resulting in predator satiation. Within one fruiting season, no significant variation in the extent of predispersal seed predation was found in any of three populations studied. There were two major forms of predispersal seed loss: toss of whole fruits to Melanterius corosus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and external insect seed grazers, and loss of individual seeds within fruits to M. corosus. Exclusion experiments showed that seeds lost to these predispersal seed predators would otherwise have been matured by the parent plant. The effects of predispersal seed predation cannot be directly related to seedling recruitment. Indirectly, such predation may influence the dispersion of seeds in the soil profile and hence, subsequent recruitment.  相似文献

In many biomes, global warming has resulted in advanced and longer growing seasons, which has often led to earlier flowering in plant taxa. Elevational gradients are ideal to study the effects of global warming as they allow transplantation of plants from their original cooler higher elevations down to elevations with a prospective climate. We transplanted plants from ten populations of the European alpine monocarpic herb species Campanula thyrsoides L. to three sites along a steep mountain slope (600, 1,235 and 1,850 m above sea level) in the Swiss Alps and asked whether reproductive phenology adjusts plastically to elevation and if these responses were adaptive, i.e. increased the fitness of plants. We further assessed current genetic differentiation in phenotypic traits and whether any such origin effects were due to adaptation to climatic conditions of origin. Our results showed that transplantation to lower elevations caused strong shifts in phenology, with plants starting growth and flowering earlier than plants placed at higher elevations. However, compared to flower production at high elevation, number of flowers per plant decreased 21 % at mid- and 61 % at low elevation. The shift in phenology thus came with a high cost in fitness, and we suggest that phenology is maladaptive when C. thyrsoides faces temperature conditions deviating from its natural amplitude. We conclude that the frequently reported phenological shift in plant species as a response to global warming may include heavy fitness costs that may hamper species survival.  相似文献

We used ecotypic variation in big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) to examine potential trade-offs between inherent growth rate and tolerance or resistance to herbivory. Seeds were obtained from seven geographic populations, and 1,120 seedlings were established in a common garden. In one set of plots, plants were subjected to five treatments: control, regular insecticide spray, moderate browsing, severe browsing, or moderate browsing plus insecticide. Plants in a second set of plots were all untreated, and were used to estimate ambient growth, flower production, and susceptibility to herbivorous insects. In the first growing season, population differences in relative growth rate produced approximately seven-fold variation in mean biomass. Two populations of basin big sagebrush (A. tridentata tridentata) and one population of mountain big sagebrush (A. tridentata vaseyana) grew fastest; those of Wyoming big sagebrush (A. tridentata wyomingensis) showed the slowest growth. Bi-weekly application of insecticide for two growing seasons had no effect on the growth of either browsed or unbrowsed plants. All populations showed compensatory growth (but not overcompensation) in response to browsing, but the degree of compensation was unrelated to inherent growth rate. Similarly, there was no consistent relationship between plant growth rate and flower production in the second growing season. Some insects colonized fast-growing populations more frequently than slow-growing ones, but patterns of insect colonization were species-specific. At the level of geographic populations and subspecies, we found little evidence of a built-in trade-off between inherent growth rate and the ability to tolerate or resist herbivory. Because population ranks for growth rate changed substantially between seasons, attempts to correlate growth and defense characters need to account for differences in the growth trajectories of perennial plants.  相似文献

The response of plants or animals to different environmental regimes may take the form of specialization of their life history patterns to match the prevailing conditions in a geographical area. In turn, the evolution of different life histories implies that there are trade-offs between distinct components of the life cycle. We investigate some of the possible explanations for the existence of distinct types of populations in the weed Arabidopsis thaliana (Brassicaceae), differentiated by flowering schedule. The so-called early flowering and late flowering "ecotypes" are hypothesized to result from adaptation to harsh winters or short seasons as opposed to mild winters or long seasons, respectively. We carried out two experiments in which we studied the reaction of natural populations to an increase in season length and to conditions simulating mild winter or spring. Unfortunately, only one of our accessions turned out to be a late flowering population; however, it did have a fitness disadvantage when the season was too short, although it had a higher reproductive output at the end of longer growing seasons. Most populations reacted to the simulation of a mild winter by extending their vegetative phase and increasing their reproductive output; however, this could be offset by increased winter mortality under harsh conditions. Character correlations (phenotypic integration) showed contrasting patterns of change in response to the two environmental factors: at the shortest season's length many correlations were negative, displaying a trade-off between vegetative and reproductive traits; during longer seasons, all correlations were positive and there was no evidence of vegetative-reproductive trade-offs. Exposure to cold did not trigger any major change in the pattern of character correlations.  相似文献

Warm nights are a widespread predicted feature of climate change. This study investigated the impact of high night temperatures during the critical period for grain yield determination in wheat and barley crops under field conditions, assessing the effects on development, growth and partitioning crop‐level processes driving grain number per unit area (GN). Experiments combined: (i) two contrasting radiation and temperature environments: late sowing in 2011 and early sowing in 2013, (ii) two well‐adapted crops with similar phenology: bread wheat and two‐row malting barley and (iii) two temperature regimes: ambient and high night temperatures. The night temperature increase (ca. 3.9 °C in both crops and growing seasons) was achieved using purpose‐built heating chambers placed on the crop at 19:000 hours and removed at 7:00 hours every day from the third detectable stem node to 10 days post‐flowering. Across growing seasons and crops, the average minimum temperature during the critical period ranged from 11.2 to 17.2 °C. Wheat and barley grain yield were similarly reduced under warm nights (ca. 7% °C?1), due to GN reductions (ca. 6% °C?1) linked to a lower number of spikes per m2. An accelerated development under high night temperatures led to a shorter critical period duration, reducing solar radiation capture with negative consequences for biomass production, GN and therefore, grain yield. The information generated could be used as a starting point to design management and/or breeding strategies to improve crop adaptation facing climate change.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of climate on reproduction, consecutive flowering, and the level of energy investment toward sexual reproduction, as well as the relationships between flowering rates and plant size, and between seed production and plant size. The target species wasHeloniopsis orientalis C. Tanaka (Liliaceae), an evergreen perennial herbaceous plant. Natural populations were monitored in permanent quadrats for seven years in a low-elevation area (Namhansanseong) and for five years in an area with a high elevation (Maranggol). The Tn indices required for flowering were relatively similar each year, but those for seed dispersal fluctuated. The period for seed production was proportional to the total length of the growing season. Rates of flowering varied annually, and depended on conditions in each study area. Flowering was discontinuous (i.e., not consecutive) at Namhansanseong, but was continuous (i.e., consecutive) at Maranggol. The rates were proportional to plant size; the minimum size class that supported flowering was 60–90 cm2, and almost all plants with >210 cm2 leaf area flowered. The overlapping range in plant size between flowering and non-flowering plants was relatively broad. Numbers of fruit per plant ranged from 1-12, with an average of 6.0 fruits at Namhansanseong and 5.0 fruits at Maranggol. In the latter area, the range in the number of seeds produced and their weight per plant varied drastically, being 1700–1867 seeds and 133.2–177.5 mg, respectively. Almost all correlation coefficients between plant size and fruit number, plant size and seed number, or plant size and seed weight were significant at the 1% level. Lastly, energy investment rates for sexual reproduction were about 30–50% of the net productivity, varying over the years. These rates were proportional to growth rates.  相似文献

Invaders generally show better individual performance than non-invaders and, therefore, vital rates (survival, growth, fecundity) could potentially be used to predict species invasiveness outside their native range. Comparative studies have usually correlated vital rates with the invasiveness status of species, while few studies have investigated them in relation to population growth rate. Here, I examined the influence of five vital rates (plant establishment, survival, growth, flowering probability, seed production) and their variability (across geographic regions, habitat types, population sizes and population densities) on population growth rate (λ) using data from 37 populations of an invasive, iteroparous herb (Lupinus polyphyllus) in a part of its invaded range in Finland. Variation in vital rates was often related to habitat type and population density. The performance of the populations varied from declining to rapidly increasing independently of habitat type, population size or population density, but differed between regions. The population growth rate increased linearly with plant establishment, and with the survival and growth of vegetative individuals, while the survival of flowering individuals and annual seed production were not related to λ. The vital rates responsible for rapid population growth varied among populations. These findings highlight the importance of both regional and local conditions to plant population dynamics, demonstrating that individual vital rates do not necessarily correlate with λ. Therefore, to understand the role of individual vital rates in a species ability to invade, it is necessary to quantify their effect on population growth rate.  相似文献

Chromosome 3 displayed the two largest yield QTLs in a previous study of 150 doubled haploid lines derived from a cross of Steptoe and Morex barley varieties. Low-copy number RFLP markers, detected using Southern analysis, are excellent tools for generating robust linkage maps as demonstrated by the Steptoe and Morex map produced by the North American Barley Genome Mapping Project (SM NABGMP). However, this technique can be cumbersome when applied to practically oriented plant breeding programs. In the present report, we demonstrate the conversion of RFLPs to more practically useful PCR-based markers that are co-dominant and allelic to the barley chromosome-3 RFLP markers from which they derive. We have used these sequence-tagged-site (STS) PCR markers to evaluate the putative yield QTL components of the Steptoe chromosome 3 in a Morex backcross population. Headshattering, plant lodging, and yield measurements are reported from five replicated field experiments conducted under diverse growing conditions in Montana. Our study detected significant effects for all three traits in a chromosomal region that evidently corresponds to the larger of the two previously reported chromosome-3 QTLs. However, we failed to detect any yield or other effects which might be coincidental to the second largest yield QTL. The genetic effects of the yield QTL identified in our first backcross breeding population show similar magnitude, environmental interactions, and association with lodging and headshattering QTLs observed in the SM NABGMP experiments. Our study elucidates complex environmental conditioning for headshattering and plant lodging which probably underlie the variable yield effects observed under different growing conditions.  相似文献

Growth of flue-cured tobacco as influenced by Meloidogyne javanica and the effectiveness of DD and ethoprop to manage this nematode were evaluated over two growing seasons. Populations of M. javanica, root galling, plant height, steam crown diameter, whole plant weight, and yield were monitored at approximately 2-week intervals beginning 28 days after transplanting. Treatment influence on nematode population development, root galling, and plant growth generally followed a pattern in descending order of efficacy: DD (187 liters/ha), ethoprop (27, 18, or 9 kg a.i./ha), and control. In all treatments, nearly season-long increases in M. javanica populations and root galling were observed. Correlation coefficients relating nematode populations or root galling to final tobacco yield suggested either method may be used successfully to evaluate nematicide efficacy in research plots. Plant growth parameters most affected by M. javanica in order of decreasing severity were cured leaf yield, whole plant weight, plant height, and stem diameter.  相似文献

Sustainable utilization of lignocellulosic perennial grass feedstocks will be enabled by high biomass production and optimized cell wall chemistry for efficient conversion into biofuels. MicroRNAs are regulatory elements that modulate the expression of genes involved in various biological functions in plants, including growth and development. In greenhouse studies, overexpressing a microRNA (miR156) gene in switchgrass had dramatic effects on plant architecture and flowering, which appeared to be driven by transgene expression levels. High expressing lines were extremely dwarfed, whereas low and moderate‐expressing lines had higher biomass yields, improved sugar release and delayed flowering. Four lines with moderate or low miR156 overexpression from the prior greenhouse study were selected for a field experiment to assess the relationship between miR156 expression and biomass production over three years. We also analysed important bioenergy feedstock traits such as flowering, disease resistance, cell wall chemistry and biofuel production. Phenotypes of the transgenic lines were inconsistent between the greenhouse and the field as well as among different field growing seasons. One low expressing transgenic line consistently produced more biomass (25%–56%) than the control across all three seasons, which translated to the production of 30% more biofuel per plant during the final season. The other three transgenic lines produced less biomass than the control by the final season, and the two lines with moderate expression levels also exhibited altered disease susceptibilities. Results of this study emphasize the importance of performing multiyear field studies for plants with altered regulatory transgenes that target plant growth and development.  相似文献

A large proportion of the worlds’ wheat growing regions suffers water and/or heat stress at some stage during the crop growth cycle. With few exceptions, there has been no utilisation of managed environments to screen mapping populations under repeatable abiotic stress conditions, such as the facilities developed by the International Wheat and Maize Improvement Centre (CIMMYT). Through careful management of irrigation and sowing date over three consecutive seasons, repeatable heat, drought and high yield potential conditions were imposed on the RAC875/Kukri doubled haploid population to identify genetic loci for grain yield, yield components and key morpho-physiological traits under these conditions. Two of the detected quantitative trait loci (QTL) were located on chromosome 3B and had a large effect on canopy temperature and grain yield, accounting for up to 22?% of the variance for these traits. The locus on chromosome arm 3BL was detected under all three treatments but had its largest effect under the heat stress conditions, with the RAC875 allele increasing grain yield by 131?kg?ha?1 (or phenotypically, 7?% of treatment average). Only two of the eight yield QTL detected in the current study (including linkage groups 3A, 3D, 4D 5B and 7A) were previously detected in the RAC875/Kukri doubled haploid population; and there were also different yield components driving grain yield. A number of discussion points are raised to understand differences between the Mexican and southern Australian production environments and explain the lack of correlation between the datasets. The two key QTL detected on chromosome 3B in the present study are candidates for further genetic dissection and development of molecular markers.  相似文献
