Propagation, dispersal, and establishment are fundamental population processes, and are critical stages in the life cycle of an organism. In symbiotic organisms such as lichens, consisting of a fungus and a population of photobionts, reproduction is a complex process. Although many lichens are able to reproduce both sexually and asexually, the extent of vegetative propagation within local populations is unknown. We used six polymorphic microsatellite loci to investigate whether recombination is common in natural populations, and to assess if and how clonal reproduction influences the spatial genetic structure within populations of the epiphytic lichen species Lobaria pulmonaria. High genetic diversity within all 12 investigated populations and evidence of recombination, from various tests, indicated that L. pulmonaria is a predominantly outcrossing species. Nevertheless, clonality occurred in all populations, but the presence of recurring multilocus genotypes influenced the spatial genetic structure only within low-density populations. This could be interpreted as indicative of genetic bottlenecks owing to increased habitat loss and disturbance. Consequently, for a predominantly outcrossing lichen species, exogenous factors might be substantially altering population processes and hence genetic structure.  相似文献

Endozoochory plays a prominent role for the dispersal of seed plants. However, for most other plant taxa it is not known whether this mode of dispersal occurs at all. Among those other taxa, lichens as symbiotic associations of algae and fungi are peculiar as their successful dispersal requires movement of propagules that leaves the symbiosis functional. However, the potential for endozoochorous dispersal of lichen fragments has been completely overlooked. We fed sterile thalli of two foliose lichen species (Lobaria pulmonaria and Physcia adscendens) differing in habitat and air-quality requirements to nine snail species common in temperate Europe. We demonstrated morphologically that L. pulmonaria regenerated from 29.0% of all 379 fecal pellets, whereas P. adscendens regenerated from 40.9% of all 433 fecal pellets, showing that lichen fragments survived gut passage of all snail species. Moreover, molecular analysis of regenerated lichens confirmed the species identity for a subset of samples. Regeneration rates were higher for the generalist lichen species P. adscendens than for the specialist lichen species L. pulmonaria. Furthermore, lichen regeneration rates varied among snail species with higher rates after gut passage of heavier snail species. We suggest that gastropods generally grazing on lichen communities are important, but so far completely overlooked, as vectors for lichen dispersal. This opens new ecological perspectives and questions the traditional view of an entirely antagonistic relationship between gastropods and lichens.  相似文献

Patterns of photobiont diversity were examined in some Nostoc -containing lichens using the nucleotide sequence of the cyanobacterial tRNALeu (UAA) intron. Lichen specimens collected in northwestern USA were analysed and the sequence data were compared with tRNALeu(UAA) intron sequences previously obtained from lichens in northern Europe. Generally, it is the species identity of a lichen rather than the geographical origin of the specimen that determines the identity of the cyanobiont. Identical intron sequences were found in Peltigera membranacea specimens collected in Oregon (USA) and in Sweden, and very similar sequences were also found in Nephroma resupinatum thalli collected in Oregon and Finland. Furthermore, in mixed assemblages where two Peltigera species grew in physical contact with each other, the different lichen species housed different photobiont strains. There is however not a one-to-one relation between mycobiont and photobiont as some intron sequences were found in more than one lichen species, and different intron sequences were found in different samples of some lichen taxa. Peltigera venosa exhibited a higher level of photobiont diversity than any other lichen species studied, and several intron sequences could for the first time be obtained from a single thallus. It is not clear whether this is evidence of lower cyanobiont specificity, or reflects an ability to exhibit different degrees of lichenization with different Nostoc strains. In one specimen of P. venosa , which contained bipartite cyanosymbiodemes and tripartite, cephalodiate thalli, both thallus types contained the same intron sequence.  相似文献

The relative impact of lichen photobiont and mycobiont was evaluated by submitting nine lichen species with: (i) different photobiont types; (ii) different lichen growth forms; and (iii) different nutrients, pH, humidity preferences; to a range of Cu concentrations (μM) supplied in repeated cycles to simulate the natural process of uptake under field conditions. The physiological performance of the photosystem II photochemical reactions was measured using Fv/Fm and the metabolic activity of the mycobiont was evaluated using ergosterol and intracellular K-loss as indicators. Lichens with higher cation exchange capacity showed higher intracellular Cu uptake and their ecology seemed to be associated with low-nutrient environments. Thus the wall and external matrix, mainly characteristic of the mycobiont partner, cannot be ignored as the first site of interaction of metals with lichens. No common intracellular Cu concentration threshold was found for the physiological impacts observed in the different species. Most physiological effects of Cu uptake in sensitive lichens occurred for intracellular Cu below 200 μg/g dw whereas more tolerant species were able to cope with intracellular Cu at least 3 times higher. Cyanobacterial lichens showed to be more sensitive to Cu uptake than green-algal lichens. Within the Trebouxia lichens, different species showed different sensitivities to Cu uptake, suggesting that the mycobiont may change the microenvironment close to the photobiont partner providing different degrees of protection. Despite the fact that the photobiont is the productive partner, the metabolic activity of the mycobiont of lichen species adapted to environments rich in nutrients, showed to be more sensitive to Cu uptake than the photochemical performance of the photobiont.  相似文献

Domestication of algae by lichen‐forming fungi describes the symbiotic relationship between the photosynthetic (green alga or cyanobacterium; photobiont) and fungal (mycobiont) partnership in lichen associations ( Goward 1992 ). The algal domestication implies that the mycobiont cultivates the alga as a monoculture within its thallus, analogous to a farmer cultivating a food crop. However, the initial photobiont ‘selection’ by the mycobiont may be predetermined by the habitat rather than by the farmer. When the mycobiont selects a photobiont from the available photobionts within a habitat, the mycobiont may influence photobiont growth and reproduction ( Ahmadjian & Jacobs 1981 ) only after the interaction has been initiated. The theory of ecological guilds ( Rikkinen et al. 2002 ) proposes that habitat limits the variety of photobionts available to the fungal partner. While some studies provide evidence to support the theory of ecological guilds in cyanobacterial lichens ( Rikkinen et al. 2002 ), other studies propose models to explain variation in symbiont combinations in green algal lichens ( Ohmura et al. 2006 ; Piercey‐Normore 2006 ; Yahr et al. 2006 ) hypothesizing the existence of such guilds. In this issue of Molecular Ecology, Peksa & ?kaloud (2011) test the theory of ecological guilds and suggest a relationship between algal habitat requirements and lichen adaptation in green algal lichens of the genus Lepraria. The environmental parameters examined in this study, exposure to rainfall, altitude and substratum type, are integral to lichen biology. Lichens have a poikilohydric nature, relying on the availability of atmospheric moisture for metabolic processes. Having no known active mechanism to preserve metabolic thallus moisture in times of drought, one would expect a strong influence of the environment on symbiont adaptation to specific habitats. Adaptation to changes in substrata and its properties would be expected with the intimate contact between crustose lichens in the genus Lepraria. Altitude has been suggested to influence species distributions in a wide range of taxonomic groups. This is one of the first studies to illustrate an ecological guild, mainly for exposure to rainfall (ombrophiles and ombrophobes), with green algal lichens.  相似文献

This investigation was designed to explore the relationships between lichen symbionts (phycobiont and mycobiont) and the substrate on which they grow by examining the chemical and ultrastructural features of the lichen-soil interface. These lichens form an integral part of microbiotic soil crusts. Fragments of three different lichen biotypes growing over gypsum crystals and marls were fixed and embedded in resin. The lichen-substratum interface was then examined by scanning electron microscopy with backscattered electron imaging. In situ observation, microanalytical (EDS), and FT-Raman plus infrared spectroscopy of the lichen-substratum interface indicated that different ultrastructural features of the mycobiont were related to biogeochemical processes and Ca 2+ distribution in the soil crust. Phycobionts were observed to make direct contact with the substratum and to be surrounded by a nondifferentiated thallus structure. These observations suggest that they can grow outside the thallus in the early stages of lichen development in the semi-arid conditions of their habitat. The particular ultrastructural features of the lichen thallus and of the lichen-substratum interface appear to have marked effects on runoff phenomena and ponding generation of the surface.  相似文献

Two populations of the lichen Lobaria pulmonaria. growing on aspens and goat willows in 12 and 20 km2 study areas of boreal forest in Finland, were surveyed thoroughly to investigate the factors influencing the spatial distribution of the lichen. In one study area, where forestry has been intensive and old-growth forest is highly fragmented, L, pulmonaria was sparse and grew mostly on willows. In contrast, a large and continuous virgin forest area supported a higher incidence of L. pulmonaria. with the lichen being common on both aspens and willows. In both study areas, the distributions of aspen and willow were clumped over the scales of 100-1000 m. The spatial pattern of L pulmonaria was more clumped in the managed forest than in the virgin forest. The reduced incidence of the lichen on aspens in the managed area was attributed to a disruption of habitat continuity and small average tree size. There was no comparable reduction in the incidence on willows, probably because the willow had a very aggregated distribution in the managed area, which probably facililated local colonization of the lichen. Presence of the lichen was significantly related to size-corrected local density of aspen and willow trees as well as to spatial connectivity to neighboring lichen-occupied trees.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that lichen species with a photosynthetic CO2-concentrating mechanism (CCM) use nitrogen more efficiently in photosynthesis than species without this mechanism. Total ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase (Rubisco; EC 4.1.1.39) and chitin (the nitrogenous component of fungal cell walls), were quantified and related to photosynthetic capacity in eight lichens. The species represented three modes of CO2 acquisition and two modes of nitrogen acquisition, and included one cyanobacterial ( Nostoc ) lichen with a CCM and N2 fixation, four green algal ( Trebouxia ) lichens with a CCM but without N2 fixation and three lichens with green algal primary photobionts ( Coccomyxa or Dictyochloropsis ) lacking a CCM. The latter have N2-fixing Nostoc in cephalodia. When related to thallus dry weight, total thallus nitrogen varied 20-fold, chitin 40-fold, Chl a 5-fold and Rubisco 4-fold among the species. Total nitrogen was lowest in three of the four Trebouxia lichens and highest in the bipartite cyanobacterial lichen. Lichens with the lowest nitrogen invested a larger proportion of this into photosynthetic components, while the species with high nitrogen made relatively more chitin. As a result, the potential photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency was negatively correlated to total thallus nitrogen for this range of species. The cyanobacterial lichen had a higher photosynthetic capacity in relation to both Chl a and Rubisco compared with the green algal lichens. For the range of green algal lichens both Chl a and Rubisco contents were linearly related to photosynthetic capacity, so the data did not support the hypothesis of an enhanced photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency in green-algal lichens with a CCM.  相似文献

The structure of the associated bacterial community of bipartite cyanolichens of the genus Peltigera from three different environmental contexts in the Karukinka Natural Park, Tierra del Fuego, Chile, was assessed. The sampling sites represent different habitat contexts: mature native forest, young native forest and grassland. Recently it has been determined that the bacterial community associated to lichens could be highly structured according to the mycobiont or photobiont identities, to the environmental context and/or to the geographic scale. However, there are some inconsistencies in defining which of these factors would be the most significant on determining the structure of the microbial communities associated with lichens, mainly because most studies compare the bacterial communities between different lichen species and/or with different photobiont types (algae vs. cyanobacteria). In this work bipartite lichens belonging to the same genus (Peltigera) symbiotically associated with cyanobacteria (Nostoc) were analyzed by TRFLP to determine the structure of the bacterial community intimately associated with the lichen thalli and the one present in the substrate where they grow. The results indicate that the bacterial community intimately associated differs from the one of the substrate, being the former more influenced by the environmental context where the lichen grows.  相似文献

Excessive nitrogen (N) deposition can impact lichen diversity in forest ecosystems, and this is a particular situation in China. Here, we examined the N uptake, assimilation, and the impact of excessive N deposition on the symbiotic balance of dominant epiphytic lichens in the subtropical forests in the Mts. Shennongjia of central China. The results show that lichen species took up, assimilated and utilized more ammonium than nitrate in a species‐specific way, following the increase of N availability. The photobiont of the lichens decreased with the increase of N concentration following an initial increase, while the mycobiont response to the N addition was not apparent. Considerable variation in response to excessive N deposition exists among the lichen species. Usnea longissima could regulate its N uptake, resulting in a stable photobiont‐mycobiont ratio among N treatments. In contrast, the photobiont‐mycobiont ratio of other four lichens increased initially but decreased when N concentration exceeded a certain level, and N stress may have broken the balance between photobiont and mycobiont of these lichens. Our results suggest that most epiphytic lichens in subtropical forest of central China could uptake and assimilate more ammonium than nitrate and that the balance between photobiont and mycobiont of many epiphytic lichens might change with the increasing N deposition load, which could impact the lichen diversity of this forest ecosystem.  相似文献

Relations between irradiance (I) and lichen growth were investigated for five macro‐lichens growing at two sites in Sweden. The lichens represented different mycobiont–photobiont associations, two morphologies (foliose, fruticose) and two life forms (epiphytic, terricolous). The lichens were transplanted at two geographically distant sites in Sweden (1000 km apart) from Sept 1995 to Sept 1996 in their typical microhabitats, where microclimate and growth were followed. Between April/May and Sept 96, the terricolous species had a dry matter gain of 0·2 to 0·4 g (g DW)–1 and the epiphytes 0·01 to 0·02 g (g DW)–1. When related to area, growth amounted to 30 to 70 g m?2 for the terricolous species and to 1 to 4 g m?2 for the epiphytes. There was a strong correlation between growth and intercepted irradiance when the lichens were wet (Iwet), with 0·2 to 1·1 g lichen dry matter being produced per MJ solar energy. Across the 10 sets of transplants, light use efficiencies of dry matter yield (e) ranged between 0·5 and 2%, using an energy equivalent of 17·5 kJ g?1 of lichen dry matter. The higher productivity of the terricolous species was due to longer periods with thallus water contents sufficient for metabolic activity and because of the higher mean photon flux densities of their microhabitat. A four‐fold difference in photosynthetic capacity among the species was also important. It is concluded that lichen dry matter gain was primarily related to net carbon gain during metabolically active periods, which was determined by light duration, photon flux density and photosynthetic capacity.  相似文献

1. The gelatinous cyanobacterial Collema tenax is a dominant lichen of biotic soil crusts in the western United States. In laboratory experiments, we studied CO2 exchange of this species as dependent on water content (WC), light and temperature. Results are compared with performance of green-algal lichens of the same site investigated earlier.
2. As compared with published data, photosynthetic capacity of C. tenax is higher than that of other cyanobacterial and green-algal soil-crust species studied. At all temperatures and photon flux densities of ecological relevance, net photosynthesis (NP) shows a strong depression at high degrees of hydration; maximal apparent quantum-use efficiency of CO2 fixation is also reduced. Water requirements (moisture compensation point, WC for maximal NP) are higher than that of the green-algal lichens. Collema tenax exhibits extreme 'sun plant' features and is adapted to high thallus temperatures.
3. Erratic rain showers are the main source of moisture for soil crusts on the Colorado Plateau, quickly saturating the lichens with liquid water. High water-holding capacity of C. tenax ensures extended phases of favourable hydration at conditions of high light and temperature after the rain for substantial photosynthetic production. Under such conditions the cyanobacterial lichen appears superior over its green-algal competitors, which seem better adapted to habitats with high air humidity, dew or fog as prevailing source of moisture.  相似文献

Destruction and fragmentation of habitats represent one of the most important threats for biodiversity. Here, we examined the effects of fragmentation in Mediterranean forests on the epiphytic lichen Lobaria pulmonaria (Lobariaceae). We tested the hypothesis that not only the level of fragmentation affects L. pulmonaria populations, but also the quality of the habitat and the nature of the surrounding matrix affect them. The presence and abundance of the lichen was recorded on 2039 trees in a total of 31 stands. We recorded habitat quality and landscape variables at three hierarchical levels: tree, plot, and patch. We found that L. pulmonaria tends to occur in trees with larger diameters in two types of surveyed forests. In Quercus pyrenaica patches, the mean diameter of colonized trees was smaller, suggesting the importance of bark roughness. Factors affecting the presence and cover of the lichen in each type of forest were different. There was a strong positive influence of distance from a river in beech forests, whereas proximity to forest edge positively affected in oak forests. The influence of the surrounding matrix was also an important factor explaining the epiphytic lichen abundance.  相似文献

Abstract: The symbiotic interactions in connection with the growth strategy of the crustose lichen Ochrolechia frigida (Sw.) Lynge have been investigated and the flexibility of its life strategies is discussed. The lichen is an interesting model organism for the mutualistic adaptation of bionts to each other and to the habitat conditions. O. frigida consists of verruciform granules which contain both bionts, and spinules and an extensive prothallus which both generally contain no algae. The algal-free stages seem to be capable of saprotrophic nutrition and hyphae penetrate cells and tissues of mosses, phanerogams and lichens. A variety of morphological and anatomical adaptations and a special type of reproductive biology are necessary to survive in harsh environments. But the overwhelming success of O. frigida is based partly on the capability of the algal-free mycobiont to colonize all plant substrates and its ability to use parasitic or at least saprotrophic ways of life to supplement its symbiotic nutrition. The environmental conditions obviously influence the growth form of the lichen. In habitats where the biomatter turnover is notoriously slow (e.g., in the Antarctic) saprotrophic nutrition will be limited and the lichen is mainly characterized by granules.  相似文献

Gas exchange studies in two Portuguese grapevine cultivars   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Gas exchange characteristics of leaves of Vitis vinifera L. cvs Tinta Amarela and Periquita, two grapevine cultivars grown in distinct climatic regions of Portugal, were studied under natural and controlled conditions. Daily time courses of gas exchange were measured on both a hot, sunny day and a cooler, partly cloudy day. Responses of net photosynthesis to irradiance and internal partial pressure of CO2, were also obtained. A strong correlation between net photosynthesis (PN) and leaf conductance (gs) was found during the diurnal time courses of gas exchange, as well as a relatively constant internal partial pressure of CO2 (Pi), even under non-steady-state conditions. On the cloudless day, both PN and gs were lower in the afternoon than in the morning, despite similar conditions of leaf temperature, air to leaf water vapor deficit and irradiance. The response curves of net photosynthesis to internal CO2 showed linearity up to pi values of 50 Pa, possibly indicating a substantial excess of photosynthetic capacity. When measured at low partial pressures of O2 (1 kPa), PN became inhibited at high CO2 levels. Inhibition of PN at high CO2 was absent under normal levels of O2 (21 kPa). Significant differences in gas exchange characteristics were found between the two cultivars, with T. Amarela having higher rates under similar measurement conditions. In particular, the superior performance of T. Amarela at high temperatures may represent adaptation to the warmer conditions at its place of origin.  相似文献

All Swedish forest land is at present being surveyed with the aim of mapping woodland key habitats which have an estimated number of ca. 70 000. An untested requirement of these habitats is that they should contain red-listed species. In order to investigate if they fulfill their aim, an inventory of nationally red-listed bryophytes and lichens was performed in ca. 120 randomly selected woodland key habitats distributed throughout the country. The species were recorded in line transects, covering the whole surface of the habitats. The mean number of red-listed species per habitat was 0.7 for bryophytes and 1.4 for lichens with 11 species at the richest site and 71% of the sites having at least one species. Nemoral forests and coniferous forests were the most species-rich habitat types. The habitats of northern Sweden were more species rich than the southern ones. There were weak correlations between presence of bryophytes and lichens. The study shows that a majority of the woodland key habitats contain red-listed bryophyte and lichen species. Further studies are needed in order to record more organism groups and to compare the woodland key habitats with the surrounding matrix forests.  相似文献

Lichens are symbioses between fungi (mycobionts) and photoautotrophic green algae or cyanobacteria (photobionts). Many lichens occupy large distributional ranges covering several climatic zones. So far, little is known about the large‐scale phylogeography of lichen photobionts and their role in shaping the distributional ranges of lichens. We studied south polar, temperate and north polar populations of the widely distributed fruticose lichen Cetraria aculeata. Based on the DNA sequences from three loci for each symbiont, we compared the genetic structure of mycobionts and photobionts. Phylogenetic reconstructions and Bayesian clustering methods divided the mycobiont and photobiont data sets into three groups. An amova shows that the genetic variance of the photobiont is best explained by differentiation between temperate and polar regions and that of the mycobiont by an interaction of climatic and geographical factors. By partialling out the relative contribution of climate, geography and codispersal, we found that the most relevant factors shaping the genetic structure of the photobiont are climate and a history of codispersal. Mycobionts in the temperate region are consistently associated with a specific photobiont lineage. We therefore conclude that a photobiont switch in the past enabled C. aculeata to colonize temperate as well as polar habitats. Rare photobiont switches may increase the geographical range and ecological niche of lichen mycobionts by associating them with locally adapted photobionts in climatically different regions and, together with isolation by distance, may lead to genetic isolation between populations and thus drive the evolution of lichens.  相似文献

? Responses to simulated nitrogen (N) deposition with or without added phosphorus (P) were investigated for three contrasting lichen species - the N-sensitive Alectoria sarmentosa, the more N-tolerant Platismatia glauca and the N(2) -fixing Lobaria pulmonaria- in a field experiment. ? To examine whether nutrient limitation differed between the photobiont and the mycobiont within the lichen, the biomass responses of the respective bionts were estimated. ? The lichenized algal cells were generally N-limited, because N-stimulated algal growth in all three species. The mycobiont was P-limited in one species (A. sarmentosa), but the growth response of the mycobionts was complex, as fungal growth is also dependent on a reliable carbon export from the photobiont, which may have been the reason for the decrease of the mycobiont with N addition in P. glauca. ? Our findings showed that P availability was an important factor when studying effects of N deposition, as P supply can both mitigate and intensify the negative effects of N on epiphytic lichens.  相似文献

Many lichen species produce both sexual and asexual propagules, but, aside from being minute, these diaspores lack special adaptations for long-distance dispersal. So far, molecular studies have not directly addressed isolation and genetic differentiation of lichen populations, both being affected by gene flow, at a regional scale. We used six mycobiont-specific microsatellite loci to investigate the population genetic structure of the epiphytic lichen Lobaria pulmonaria in two regions that strongly differed with respect to anthropogenic impact. In British Columbia, L. pulmonaria grows in continuous old-growth forests, while its populations in the old cultural landscape of Switzerland are comparably small and fragmented. Populations from both British Columbia and Switzerland were genetically diverse at the loci. Geographically restricted alleles, low historical gene flow, and analyses of genetic distance (upgma tree) and of differentiation (amova) indicated that populations from Vancouver Island and from the Canadian mainland were separated from each other, except for one, geographically intermediate population. This differentiation was attributed to different glacial and postglacial histories of coastal and inland populations in British Columbia. In contrast to expectations, the three investigated Swiss populations were genetically neither isolated nor differentiated from each other despite the long-lasting negative human impact on the lichen's range size in Central Europe. We propose that detailed studies integrating local landscape and regional scales are now needed to understand the processes of dispersal and gene flow in lichens.  相似文献

Although common knowledge dictates that the lichen thallus is formed solely by a fungus (mycobiont) that develops a symbiotic relationship with an alga and/or cyanobacterium (photobiont), the non-photoautotrophic bacteria found in lichen microbiomes are increasingly regarded as integral components of lichen thalli. For this study, comparative analyses were conducted on lichen-associated bacterial communities to test for effects of photobiont-types (i.e. green algal vs. cyanobacterial), mycobiont-types and large-scale spatial distances (from tropical to arctic latitudes). Amplicons of the 16S (SSU) rRNA gene were examined using both Sanger sequencing of cloned fragments and barcoded pyrosequencing. Rhizobiales is typically the most abundant and taxonomically diverse order in lichen microbiomes; however, overall bacterial diversity in lichens is shown to be much higher than previously reported. Members of Acidobacteriaceae, Acetobacteraceae, Brucellaceae and sequence group LAR1 are the most commonly found groups across the phylogenetically and geographically broad array of lichens examined here. Major bacterial community trends are significantly correlated with differences in large-scale geography, photobiont-type and mycobiont-type. The lichen as a microcosm represents a structured, unique microbial habitat with greater ecological complexity and bacterial diversity than previously appreciated and can serve as a model system for studying larger ecological and evolutionary principles.  相似文献
