The hybrid version of the radial forearm free flap provides an alternative method for reconstruction in the head and neck. It is versatile and has certain theoretical and practical advantages, including high-flow venous drainage, long venous pedicle, lymphatic drainage, and the avoidance of venous anastomosis or venous transpositional graft. In those situations when the availability of veins is reduced after a radical neck dissection or the quality of vein is poor because of previous irradiation, the hybrid free flap is the method of choice for microvascular reconstruction in the head and neck region.  相似文献

Haemogregarina bigemina is redescribed from the blood of the marine fish Blennius pholis, and stages presumed to be those of the haemogregarine are recorded from the hematophagous praniza larva of the isopod Gnathia maxillaris. At College Rocks, Aberystwyth, Wales, the main study area, a high incidence of infection occurred in B. pholis. No exoerythrocytic stages were observed in these fish, nor was sexual dimorphism of the gametocyte evident. As in an earlier study, ecological evidence favored transmission by G. maxillaris rather than by leeches. Gametocytes, syzygy, oocysts, sporoblasts, and sporozoites were identified in the anterior hindgut of the isopod. The stages observed in G. maxillaris are compared with those of other haemogregarines described from the digestive tract of leeches. Mention is made of an intraleucocytic haemogregarine of another fish, Crenilabrus melops.  相似文献

To characterize the anatomy of the venous outflow of the mouse brain using different imaging techniques. Ten C57/black male mice (age range: 7-8 weeks) were imaged with high-frequency Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance Angiography and ex-vivo Microcomputed tomography of the head and neck. Under general anesthesia, Ultrasound of neck veins was performed with a 20MHz transducer; head and neck Magnetic Resonance Angiography data were collected on 9.4T or 7T scanners, and ex-vivo Microcomputed tomography angiography was obtained by filling the vessels with a radiopaque inert silicone rubber compound. All procedures were approved by the local ethical committee. The dorsal intracranial venous system is quite similar in mice and humans. Instead, the mouse Internal Jugular Veins are tiny vessels receiving the sigmoid sinuses and tributaries from cerebellum, occipital lobe and midbrain, while the majority of the cerebral blood, i.e. from the olfactory bulbs and fronto-parietal lobes, is apparently drained through skull base connections into the External Jugular Vein. Three main intra-extracranial anastomoses, absent in humans, are: 1) the petrosquamous sinus, draining into the posterior facial vein, 2) the veins of the olfactory bulb, draining into the superficial temporal vein through a foramen of the frontal bone 3) the cavernous sinus, draining in the External Jugular Vein through a foramen of the sphenoid bone. The anatomical structure of the mouse cranial venous outflow as depicted by Ultrasound, Microcomputed tomography and Magnetic Resonance Angiography is different from humans, with multiple connections between intra- and extra- cranial veins.  相似文献

Summary The vascularization of the pars distalis of the hypophysis of the toad, Bufo bufo (L.), was studied by the traditional method of injecting a mixture of India-ink and gelatine into the circulatory system of the head via the arteria carotis communis. Further, methyl-methacrylate corrosion casts of the brains were made; the hypothalamo-adenohypophysial region of these corrosion casts was studied with the scanning electron microscope. The results showed that the portal vessels which arise from the median eminence do not supply distinct areas in the pars distalis as is supposed by the point-to-point-hypothesis. The portal vessels enter the ventro-median region of the pars distalis and branch off into a three-dimensional network of the secondary capillary plexus of the pars distalis. The plexus is made up mostly by four- to six-sided meshes. This angioarchitecture guarantees an optimal supply of the glandular cells of the pars distalis with nutritional factors and releasing hormones, on the one hand, and facilitates the removal of the hormones which are released by these cells, on the other hand. The venous drainage of the pars distalis is exerted mainly by two large veins, which bilaterally leave the dorso-lateral region (venous pole) of the pars distalis and by a few small veins, which drain into the wide, sinus-like vessel, which curves around the dorso-caudal region of the pars distalis and joins bilaterally the vena hypophysea transversa. This work was supported by the Fonds zur Förderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung (Projekt Nr. 2183/N 39) and by the Stiftungs- und Förderungsgesellschaft der Paris-Lodron-Universität SalzburgThe authors wish to thank Mag. Three clinical cases of canine avascular femoral head necrosis and 4 cases of hip dysplasia were examined using intraosseus femoral neck venography. The contrast medium passed initio the diaphyseal bone marrow in all cases. Three growing dogs and 7 growing pigs were examined with the same method, before and after experimental ligation of the femoral veins. Before the venous tamponade, no contrast medium was visible in the femoral neck. The venography performed immediately after ligation showed contrast flow into the femoral neck similar to that seen in the clinical cases of Legg Perthes disease or hip dysplasia. However, a collateral circulation developed within 7 weeks. No more contrast-flow into the diaphysis was observed after that time. Although osteomedullography shows that both in Perthes disease and in hip dysplasia venous drainage has failed, venous tamponade may not induce the onset of the disease.  相似文献

The three barredDanio species known from the Irrawaddy River drainage are redescribed. Two species are known from southwestern Yunnan:Danio interruptus in the Husa He and Longchuan, Jian watersheds, andD. apogon abundantly in the main river and tributaries of the Daying Jiang basin. The third species,D. shanensis, occurs in the Myitnge basin of northern Shan State, Myanmar.Danio interruptus differs from other barredDanio species by having a short, incomplete lateral line, a deeper head, and shorter thicker dark vertical bars or blotches anteriorly on the sides.Danio shanensis has the lateral line either complete or incomplete, lesser head depth, and a series of deeper narrower vertical bars.Danio apogon has no lateral line, narrow or indistinct dark vertical bars, and a wide, but indistinct, horizonatal P stripe.Danio choprae, previously considered, as a barredDanio species, is more closely related to theD. dangila species group.  相似文献

All early (Pliocene–Early Pleistocene) hominins exhibit some differences in proximal femoral morphology from modern humans, including a long femoral neck and a low neck‐shaft angle. In addition, australopiths (Au. afarensis, Au. africanus, Au. boisei, Paranthropus boisei), but not early Homo, have an “anteroposteriorly compressed” femoral neck and a small femoral head relative to femoral shaft breadth. Superoinferior asymmetry of cortical bone in the femoral neck has been claimed to be human‐like in australopiths. In this study, we measured superior and inferior cortical thicknesses at the middle and base of the femoral neck using computed tomography in six Au. africanus and two P. robustus specimens. Cortical asymmetry in the fossils is closer overall to that of modern humans than to apes, although many values are intermediate between humans and apes, or even more ape‐like in the midneck. Comparisons of external femoral neck and head dimensions were carried out for a more comprehensive sample of South and East African australopiths (n = 17) and two early Homo specimens. These show that compared with modern humans, femoral neck superoinferior, but not anteroposterior breadth, is larger relative to femoral head breadth in australopiths, but not in early Homo. Both internal and external characteristics of the australopith femoral neck indicate adaptation to relatively increased superoinferior bending loads, compared with both modern humans and early Homo. These observations, and a relatively small femoral head, are consistent with a slightly altered gait pattern in australopiths, involving more lateral deviation of the body center of mass over the stance limb. Cerebral venous drainage in humans is thought to be ensured mainly via the internal jugular veins (IJVs). However, anatomic, angiographic, and ultrasound studies suggest that the vertebral venous system serves as an important alternative drainage route. We assessed venous blood volume flow in vertebral veins (VVs) and IJVs of 12 healthy volunteers using duplex ultrasound. Measurements were performed at rest and during a transient bilateral IJV and a circular neck compression. Total venous blood volume flow at rest was 766 +/- 226 ml/min (IJVs: 720 +/- 232, VVs: 47 +/- 33 ml/min). During bilateral IJV compression, VV flow increased to 128 +/- 64 ml/min. Circular neck compression, causing an additional deep cervical vein obstruction, led to a further rise in VV volume flow (186 +/- 70 ml/min). As the observed flow increase did not compensate for IJV flow cessation, other parts of the vertebral venous system, like the intraspinal epidural veins and the deep cervical veins, have to be considered as additional alternative drainage pathways.  相似文献

Blood supply of the human cervical sympathetic chain and ganglia   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
OBJECTIVE: Cadaveric studies of the blood supply to the human cervical sympathetic chain and ganglia are lacking in the English literature. This study seeks to elucidate the gross blood supply of the cervical sympathetic chain so as to avoid surgical disruption of these vessels and thus decrease the risk of vascular insufficieny and subsequent dysfunction of thoracolumbar autonomic outflow to the head and neck. METHODS: Twelve (24 sides) human cadavers (8 male and 4 female) were dissected and their brachiocephalic veins, internal carotid arteries, and vertebral arteries cannulated. Red and blue latex was injected into the arteries and veins respectively. Dissection of the neck was carefully performed and the blood supply of the cervical sympathetic chain identified. RESULTS: The primary arterial supply to the sympathetic chain and ganglia were from superior to inferior the ascending pharyngeal, ascending cervical, thyrocervical trunk, and supreme intercostal arteries. The primary venous drainage of these structures was primarily by direct posterior branches into the internal jugular vein. In addition, we have found an area at the junction of the lower two-thirds and upper one-third of the neck, which is deficient in blood supply (both arterial and venous). CONCLUSIONS: Although sympathetic injury is a rare consequence of cervical operations, the current data should be useful to the surgeon who operates in the cervical region so as to avoid potential complications from disruption of the primary blood supply of the cervical sympathetic chain and ganglia. Also, future techniques of selective iatrogenic disruption of the blood supply to portions of these structures e.g. stellate ganglion may be helpful in treating entities such as hyperhydrosis.  相似文献

The longnose dace, Rhinichthys cataractae, is a primary freshwater fish inhabiting riffle habitats in small headwater rivers and streams across the North American continent, including drainages east and west of the Continental Divide. The mitochondrially encoded cytochrome b gene (1140 bp) and 2298–2346 bp of the nuclear‐encoded genes S7 and RAG1 were obtained from 87 individuals of R. cataractae (collected from 17 sites throughout its range) and from several close relatives. Phylogenetic analyses recovered a monophyletic R. cataractae species‐group that contained Rhinichthys evermanni, Rhinichthys sp. ‘Millicoma dace’, and a non‐exclusive R. cataractae. Within the R. cataractae species‐group, two well‐supported lineages were identified, including a western lineage (containing R. evermanni, R. sp. ‘Millicoma dace’ and individuals of R. cataractae from Pacific slope drainages) and an eastern lineage (containing individuals of R. cataractae from Arctic, Atlantic, and Gulf slope drainages). Within the eastern lineage of R. cataractae, two well‐supported groups were recovered: a south‐eastern group, containing individuals from the Atlantic slope, southern tributaries to the Mississippi River, and the Rio Grande drainage; and a north‐eastern group, containing individuals from the Arctic slope and northern tributaries to the Mississippi River. Estimates of the timing of divergence within the R. cataractae species‐group, combined with ancestral area‐reconstruction methods, indicate a separation between the eastern and western lineages during the Pliocene to early‐Pleistocene, with a direction of colonization from the west of the Continental Divide eastward. Within the southern portion of its range, R. cataractae likely entered the Rio Grande drainage during the Pleistocene via stream capture events between the Arkansas River (Mississippi River drainage) and headwaters of the Rio Grande. A close relationship between populations of R. cataractae in the Rio Grande drainage and the adjacent Canadian River (Mississippi River drainage) is consistent with hypothesized stream capture events between the Pecos (Rio Grande drainage) and Canadian rivers during the late‐Pleistocene. The population of R. cataractae in the lower Rio Grande may have become separated from other populations in the Rio Grande drainage (upper Rio Grande and Pecos River) and Canadian River during the late‐Pleistocene, well before initiation of recent and significant anthropogenic disturbance within the Rio Grande drainage. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 111 , 317–333.  相似文献

Lynx Creek, a small intermittent creek in the Bradshaw Mountains of Arizona, is subjected to drainage from an abandoned copper mine. The mine-drainage decreases the pH of the Creek about three units and greatly increases sulfate and heavy metal concentrations. Chemical recovery of the Creek occurs downstream through precipitation of metal hydroxides and dilution by tributaries. Changes in Creek chemistry are accompanied by changes in algal flora. Above the mine and downstream after substantial recovery, the flora is dominated by Tribonema affine4, Achnanthes spp., and Synedra ulna and several zygnematacean species. In the mine seep entering the Creek and in the Creek just below the seep the flora is reduced in species richness and dominated in abundance by Microthamnion kuetzingianum and Eunotia tenella.  相似文献

The intraosseous veins of the maxilla in newborns grow larger with enlargement of the bone and become disposed in three mutually perpendicular planes. The venous plexus of the alveolar process is large. V. v. vallares are thin and interlace forming a network. The veins of interdental septum are well pronounced. The thick venous network of the periosteum and the mucous membrane of the nasal surface of the palatine process includes the vessels transversal and longitudinal to the nasal septum. The venous loops of the incisor part are of triangular, pentagonal and polygonal shape. The veins of the palatine process are connected with 3-4 large vessels falling into the vessels of the tear duct. The transversal and oblique veins of the oral surface of the palatine process are connected with large vessels disposed in parallel to the medial structure of the hard palate. The venous network of the incisor part of the bone is restricted by densified small arc-shaped plexuses. Two-three largest veins lie sagittally and, connected by arc-shaped anastomoses, are tributaries of the vessels of the palate bone, soft palate and pharynx.  相似文献

Microvascular anatomy and histomorphology of larval and adult spleens of the Clawed Toad, Xenopus laevis were studied by light microscopy of paraplast embedded serial tissue sections and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of vascular corrosion casts (VCCs). Histology showed i) that white and red pulp are present at the onset of metamorphic climax (stage 57) and ii) that splenic vessels penetrated deeply into the splenic parenchyma at the height of metamorphic climax (stage 64). Scanning electron microscopy of VCCs demonstrated gross arterial supply and venous drainage, splenic microvascular patterns as well as the structure of the interstitial (extravasal) spaces representing the “open circulation routes.” These spaces identified themselves as interconnected resin masses of two distinct forms, namely “broccoli‐shaped” forms and highly interconnected small resin structures. Arterial and venous trees were clearly identified, as were transitions from capillaries to interstitial spaces and from interstitial spaces to pulp venules. Venous sinuses were not diagnosed (nonsinusal spleen). The splenic circulation in Xenopus laevis is “open.” It is hypothesized that red blood cells circulate via splenic artery, central arteries, penicillar arteries, and red pulp capillaries primarily via “broccoli‐shaped” interstitial spaces, pulp venules and veins into subcapsular veins to splenic veins while lymphocytes circulate also via the interstitial spaces represented by the highly interconnected small resin structures in vascular corrosion casts. In physiological terms, the former most likely represent the fast route for blood circulation, while the latter represent the slow route. J. The authors' aim was to evaluate the response of the intracranial venous system to application of functional tests. In 46 healthy volunteers, the basal veins were examined using venous transcranial color-coded duplex sonography. We evaluated angle-corrected venous peak-systolic flow velocities (V(vb)) in response to hypercapnia (I group: 29 subjects) and the orthostatic test (II group: 17 subjects). We have found that hypercapnia inducesa significant increase of the flow velocities in the basal veins, on average 60 +/- 22.7% (p < 0.00001). The reaction prevents venous hyperaemia, i. e., significant increase of the cerebral blood flow volume and the drainage of the brain. In contrast to hypercapnia, the orthostatic test led to decrease in the flow velocities in the basal veins. The percentage of velocity decrease ranged from 16to 32% (p < 0.001). Posturally induced reduction of the venous flow volume prevents excessive drainage from the brain. Thus, we have shown that both tests can be used for evaluation of reactivity of the intracranial venous system and they can complement each other.  相似文献

Summary Ipsilateral antennular dysfunction resulting from total unilateral eyestalk ablation in spiny lobsters does not occur when visual input is restricted by an opaque cap over one eyestalk, or when optic ganglia alone (eg. lamina ganglionaris, medulla externa, medulla interna) are removed. Antennular dysfunction appears only when connections between the most proximal of the four eyestalk ganglia, the medulla terminalis, and the remainder of the cerebral ganglia (brain) are interrupted. We conclude that neural processing of olfactory input from the antennule involves structures in the medulla terminalis.Contribution number 430 from the Bermuda Biological Station for Research, Inc. The incidence of recurrences after radical venous operations done during pregnancy or where pregnancy has occurred subsequently is much higher than it is in cases in which pregnancy is not a factor. These discouraging results are due to increased venous pressure, obstruction to the venous drainage of the lower extremities and hormonal factors. The management of varicose veins during pregnancy should be by conservative means consisting of proper elastic support, elevation of the extremities at night and during rest periods in the day, avoiding static dependency of the legs, and control of body weight. In event of venous stasis and severe symptoms of varicosis that cannot be controlled by conservative measures, limited surgical intervention is indicated. This should consist of high ligation and division of the involved venous trunk and the immediate tributaries. Radical extirpation of varicose veins should be reserved until further pregnancy is not contemplated.  相似文献

A new species of the genus Paracobitis, Paracobitis nanpanjiangensis is described from tributaries of the Nanpanjiang River drainage in China. It is distinguished from its congeners, except P. oligolepis and P. wujiangensis, by body scaleless or with rudimentary scales (caudal peduncle with several deeply embedded scales). It can be differentiated from P. wujiangensis by the complete lateral line (vs. incomplete), lower dorsal crest reaching the vertical of origin of anal fin (vs. shorter and higher dorsal crest not reaching the base of anal fin). It is distinguished from P. oligolepis by the following characters: branched dorsal fin with 81/2 (a few 91/2) rays (vs. 91/2), interspaces between bars in front of dorsal fin conspicuously thinner than those behind (vs. vermiform markings), dorsal head without vermiform markings or obscure (vs. clearly vermiform markings on dorsal head), vertebrae 4 + 36–38 (vs. 4 + 39–41).  相似文献

Ten rats were embalmed, the veins of the head latex-injected, and the heads were dissected. Five rats were used to prepare corrosion casts of the venous structures of the head. It was found that the rat has an orbital venous plexus rather than an orbital venous sinus as seen in the mouse and hamster. The orbital venous plexus was formed by the external dorsal ophthalmic vein, the external ventral ophthalmic vein and numerous anastomoses between these veins. Of major interest was a large anastomotic vein located in the caudaldorsal area of the orbit. The anastomotic vein joined the orbital venous plexus and the superficial temporal vein.  相似文献
