The pattern of colonization of the Moreton Bay region in southeast Queensland, Australia, by the giant toad, Bufo marinus , is described. Estimates are made of the rates of colonization in this and other regions. The mean values obtained range from 2.5 km/year in the south to 15.1 km/year in the north. The analysis suggests that colonization has been discontinuous in many areas, probably as a result of occasional, long-distance transportation of toads by humans. The variation in colonization rate is related in a predictable way to variation in environmental factors such as temperature and topography. In areas where discontinuities are least likely, colonization rates are used to estimate rates of continuous dispersal. These are combined with estimates of population density, sex ratios and offspring number variance to obtain estimates of genetic neighbourhood size. These are much greater than estimates of the effective size of B. marinus populations determined from gene frequency variances. The reasons for and implications of this discrepancy are discussed. 相似文献

The arrival of a toxic invasive species may impose selection on local predators to avoid consuming it. Feeding responses may be modified via evolutionary changes to behaviour, or via phenotypic plasticity (e.g. learning, taste aversion). The recent arrival of cane toads (Bufo marinus) in the Northern Territory of Australia induced rapid aversion learning in a predatory marsupial (the common planigale, Planigale maculata). Here, we examine the responses of planigales to cane toads in north‐eastern Queensland, where they have been sympatric for over 60 years, to investigate whether planigale responses to cane toads have been modified by long‐term exposure. Responses to toads were broadly similar to those documented for toad‐naïve predators. Most Queensland planigales seized (21 of 22) and partially consumed (11 of 22) the first toad they were offered, but were likely to ignore toads in subsequent trials. However, unlike their toad‐naïve conspecifics from the Northern Territory, the Queensland planigales all survived ingestion of toad tissue without overt ill effects and continued to attack toads in a substantial proportion of subsequent trials. Our data suggest that (i) learning by these small predators is sufficiently rapid and effective that selection on behaviour has been weak; and (ii) physiological tolerance to toad toxins may be higher in planigales after 60 years (approximately 60 generations) of exposure to this toxic prey. 相似文献

As is common in biological invasions, the rate at which cane toads (Rhinella marina) have spread across tropical Australia has accelerated through time. Individuals at the invasion front travel further than range-core conspecifics and exhibit distinctive morphologies that may facilitate rapid dispersal. However, the links between these morphological changes and locomotor performance have not been clearly documented. We used raceway trials and high-speed videography to document locomotor traits (e.g. hop distances, heights, velocities, and angles of take-off and landing) of toads from range-core and invasion-front populations. Locomotor performance varied geographically, and this variation in performance was linked to morphological features that have evolved during the toads'' Australian invasion. Geographical variation in morphology and locomotor ability was evident not only in wild-caught animals, but also in individuals that had been raised under standardized conditions in captivity. Our data thus support the hypothesis that the cane toad''s invasion across Australia has generated rapid evolutionary shifts in dispersal-relevant performance traits, and that these differences in performance are linked to concurrent shifts in morphological traits. 相似文献

- To manage biological invasions effectively, the impacts of alien species on the demography and traits of native species must be known, but determining those impacts can be challenging. We used a comparative approach to gain insight into the impacts that an alien toad (Bufo japonicus formosus) might have on native Japanese predatory amphibians. We compared the susceptibility of native predator species to alien toad toxins in the alien-invaded range and the susceptibility of closely related native predator species to the toxins in the alien toad's native range to investigate the impacts of an alien on a native species.
- Bufo japonicus formosus is native to Honshu, but was recently introduced to Hokkaido and Sado. In laboratory experiments, we compared individual mortality of predators exposed to a toad hatchling between novel predators on the toad-invaded islands and ecologically similar congeneric or conspecific species on Honshu, where the toad is native. We also compared (1) the percentage of individuals that consumed a toad hatchling and (2) toxin resistance (i.e. survival and growth of individuals after toad consumption) between these two groups of predators, as mechanistic components behind the susceptibility of the predators to the toxic prey.
- The mortality of Rana pirica from all populations after consumption of a toad hatchling was almost 100%, and that of Hynobius retardatus ranged from 14 to 90%, depending on the population. In contrast, the mortality of Rana ornativentris and Hynobius nigrescens was near 0% regardless of population. These differences between congeneric predators were mostly due to differences in their toxin resistance.
- These results suggest that the alien toad is a potential threat to the novel amphibian predators on Hokkaido, although they also imply that the novel predators on Hokkaido have the potential to develop toxin resistance through adaptive evolution. However, this counteradaptation may have a higher chance of evolving in H. retardatus than in R. pirica because of differences in their genetic backgrounds.

Introductions of biological control agents may cause bottlenecks in population size despite efforts to avoid them. We examined the population genetics of Aphidius ervi (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a parasitoid that was introduced to North America from Western Europe in 1959 to control pea aphids. To explore the phylogeographical relationships of A. ervi we sequenced 1249 bp of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from 27 individuals from the native range and 51 individuals from the introduced range. Most individuals from Western Europe, the Middle East and North America shared one of two common haplotypes, consistent with the known history of the introduction. However, some A. ervi from the Pacific Northwest have a haplotype that is most similar to haplotypes found in Japan, raising the possibility of a second accidental introduction. To examine population structure and assess whether a bottleneck occurred upon introduction to North America, we assayed variation at 5 microsatellite loci in 62 individuals from 2 native populations and 230 individuals from 6 introduced populations. Introduced samples had fewer rare alleles than native samples (F1,34 = 13.5, P = 0.0008), but heterozygosity did not differ significantly. These results suggest that a mild bottleneck occurred in spite of the introduction of over 1000 individuals. Using a hierarchical Bayesian approach, the founding population size was estimated to be 245 individuals. amova showed significant genetic differentiation between the European and North American samples, and a Bayesian assignment approach clustered individuals into four groups, with most European individuals in one group and most North American individuals in the other three. These results highlight that genetic changes are associated with founder events in rapidly growing natural populations, even when the founding population size is relatively large. 相似文献

The Australian populations of the green-eyed tree frog Litoria genimaculata consist of a northern and southern genetic lineage that meet in a mosaic contact zone comprising two independent areas of contact: one where the main ranges of the lineages overlap, and the second where a population of the southern lineage is isolated within the range of the northern lineage. A recent study failed to find significant reproductive isolation between the main ranges of the two lineages, despite deep genetic divergence, partial postzygotic isolation, and call differences. The study did, however, demonstrate rapid phenotypic divergence and speciation of the isolated population of the southern lineage from both the parapatric northern lineage and from the allopatric, but genetically similar, main range of the southern lineage. Herein, the isolated population of the southern lineage is described as a distinct species, Litoria myola sp. nov. , whereas the remainder of the southern lineage and the northern lineage are retained as a single, paraphyletic species, Litoria genimaculata . Resolving this unusual systematic situation demonstrates the value of using multiple lines of evidence in delimiting species. Litoria myola sp. nov. has a very small distribution and population size and warrants a Critically Endangered listing (B1, 2) under IUCN criteria. Threats and management recommendations are outlined, and the conservation of hybrid zones as areas of evolutionary novelty is discussed. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 91 , 549–563. 相似文献

We present a comprehensive survey of genetic variation across the range of the narrowly distributed endemic Yosemite toad Bufo canorus, a declining amphibian restricted to the Sierra Nevada of California. Based on 322 bp of mitochondrial cytochrome b sequence data, we found limited support for the monophyly of B. canorus and its closely related congener B. exsul to the exclusion of the widespread western toad B. boreas. However, B. exsul was always phylogenetically nested within B. canorus, suggesting that the latter may not be monophyletic. SSCP (single-strand conformation polymorphism) analysis of 372 individual B. canorus from 28 localities in Yosemite and Kings Canyon National Parks revealed no shared haplotypes among these two regions and lead us to interpret these two parks as distinct management units for B. canorus. Within Yosemite, we found significant genetic substructure both at the level of major drainages and among breeding ponds. Kings Canyon samples show a different pattern, with substantial variation among breeding sites, but no substructure among drainages. Across the range of B. canorus as well as among Yosemite ponds, we found an isolation-by-distance pattern suggestive of a stepping stone model of migration. However, in Kings Canyon we found no hint of such a pattern, suggesting that movement patterns of toads may be quite different in these nearby parklands. Our data imply that management for B. canorus should focus at the individual pond level, and effective management may necessitate reintroductions if local extirpations occur. A brief review of other pond-breeding anurans suggests that highly structured populations are often the case, and thus that our results for B. canorus may be general for other species of frogs and toads. 相似文献

Post-release monitoring of biological control agents to determine impact on the target weed has recently received increased priority. Several methods are available to measure the impact of a biological control agent by manipulating the agent population while measuring fitness of the weed. Brazilian peppertree, Schinus terebinthifolia is one of the most damaging weeds in subtropical areas of Florida and Hawaii. A biological control agent, the thrips, Pseudophilothrips ichini is a sap-feeder that shows high levels of specificity and causes severe distortion of leaf tips of the weed. Thrips populations of this species and a generalist thrips, the red banded thrips Selenothrips rubrocinctus were experimentally manipulated by applications of the systemic insecticide acephate by both foliar applications and by an inserted encapsulated formulation. Foliar applications protected plants against red banded thrips for 29 days and against the biological control thrips, P. ichini for 22 days after treatment. Control with inserts were initially low but was achieved after 60 days and this control continued for 182 days after treatment. Manipulation of these biological control thrips populations with foliar or inserted formulations will assist in the determination of biological control agent impact. 相似文献

The European grasshopper mite Eutrombidium trigonum (Hermann) lives concealed in the soil in relatively warm and xeric biotopes. The eggs and spermatophores display a moderate drought resistence. The adults, during mating and larvae leave the soil and are to be found on the soil surface. The host range of the parasitic larva is restricted to Saltatoria. The larval growth is much greater than that of other instars of E. trigonum; however, no damage or other effects on the hosts were obvious and usually the hosts survived parasitism. The active post-larval instars of E. trigonum are predatory and feed exclusively on the eggs of Acrididae. The life cycle of E. trigonum is uni- to semi-voltine and is synchronized by an obligatory diapause of the adult instar before reproduction.Deceased. 相似文献

Abstract Acacia cyclops is an invasive Australian tree in South Africa and a target for biological control using seed-reducing agents. In southern Australia, two gall-forming Cecidomyiidae, Dasineura dielsi (Small Fluted Galler) and Asphondylia sp., develop on the flowers and seeds of A. cyclops , respectively. The larvae of D. dielsi form woody fluted galls on the ovaries of flowers and prevent the development of fruit. Immature Asphondylia sp. develop in the loculi of green fruit and destroy developing seeds. Dasineura dielsi was selected as a biological control candidate for A. cyclops in South Africa and was approved for official release after host specificity evaluation and consideration of potential conflicts of interest. Dasineura dielsi naturalised in South Africa in 2001 and after 3 years dispersed up to 450 km from a single population at Stellenbosch, Western Cape. At sites where D. dielsi has been present longest, high gall densities occur on A. cyclops during the peak flower season in summer. Four hymenopterans, ? Synopeas sp., Mesopolobus sp., Torymus sp. and an unidentified Platygastridae, were reared from D. dielsi galls and are suspected parasitoids of the cecidomyiid, with incidence levels less than 10%. Monitoring is required to evaluate trends in the population status of D. dielsi , its parasitoids and seed production of A. cyclops . Importantly, field monitoring should determine the extent and nature of possible competitive interactions between D. dielsi and an introduced seed-feeding weevil, Melanterius servulus . 相似文献

From 2012 to 2015, 429,668 Lilioceris cheni Gressit and Kimoto (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) were released in Florida for biological control of air potato Dioscorea bulbifera L. (Dioscoreaceae). In the fall of 2015, a state-wide survey was conducted at 113 randomly selected air potato infestations in order to determine the spatial distribution of L. cheni. Damage due to L. cheni was found at 86% of locations and was low in the Florida panhandle where air potato was relatively uncommon and fewer beetles had been released, and in far south Florida, despite high numbers of beetle releases. On average, beetles travelled 9.5?km from the nearest release site to survey sites from the date of release to the time of the survey, with a maximum distance of nearly 67?km. The rate of spread was estimated at 8.2?km/year under the assumption that beetles present at survey sites migrated or were moved from the nearest release site. Air potato vines produced fewer aerial tubers, the vegetative propagule of air potato, as foliar damage due to L. cheni increased. The results suggest that future research efforts should focus on determining the biotic and abiotic factors that may be limiting establishment in some areas of Florida. 相似文献

A retrospective analysis shows that invasive, alien, free-floating and emergent aquatic weeds in Europe are good targets for
classical biological control, and that genus-specific chrysomelid and curculionid beetles offer the most potential. Ludwigia spp., Azolla filiculoides, Lemna minuta, Crassula helmsii and Hydrocotyle ranunculoides should be prioritised as targets. Fungal pathogens have been under-utilised as classical agents but, whilst they may have
some potential against free-floating weeds, they appear to be poor candidates against submerged species, although the suitability
of arthropod agents against these difficult targets still merits investigation. The use of indigenous pathogens as inundative
agents (mycoherbicides) shows some promise. 相似文献

The acceptance of poorly tested hypotheses has adverse scientific consequences, and may have adverse ecological and social consequences. The hypothesis that purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) has deleterious effects on North American wetlands is an example. We traced the history of purple loosestrife and its control in North America and found little scientific evidence consistent with the hypothesis that purple loosestrife has deleterious effects. The most commonly cited study of the effects of purple loosestrife on native flora and fauna produced inconclusive results. The general acceptance of this hypothesis, however, has resulted in the introduction of nonindigenous insects for biological control. Efforts to control purple loosestrife may be misplayed and may have long-term ecological consequences if loosestrife does not have the impact it is believed to have. The acceptance of this hypothesis using scientific justifications may affect future scientific credibil ity. Careful evaluation of the precautionary principle is necessary when considering the control of nonindigenous organisms. 相似文献

Abiotic factors affecting Diachasmimorpha longicaudata (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) activity as a natural enemy of Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae) under semi‐natural conditions in the Mediterranean region 下载免费PDF全文

The larval–pupal endoparasitoid Diachasmimorpha longicaudata (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is currently the most commonly employed biological control agent against Tephritid fruit flies in the Americas. However, this parasitoid remains largely ignored and is not used in many regions, including the Mediterranean Basin. In this study, the potential of D. longicaudata as a biocontrol agent against the Mediterranean fruit fly (medfly) Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae) was addressed in an area of eastern Spain (the Valencian community). The parasitic activity of parasitoids and the effects of climatic conditions were evaluated throughout a 1‐year period in field‐cage experiments in which parasitoids were confined with apples artificially infested with medfly larvae. The following parameters were calculated and related statistically to several environmental conditions: the parasitism rate, the induced mortality and progeny sex ratio. The results show that D. longicaudata is able to parasitize medfly larvae throughout the year under semi‐natural conditions. Important fluctuations in the parasitism rate (from almost zero to 42%) and the induced mortality (from 6% to 80%) were partially influenced by climatic conditions. The parasitism rate increased with mean temperature and decreased with mean relative humidity, while the induced mortality decreased with minimum relative humidity. The optimal climatic conditions for the activity of the parasitoid were a mean temperature of 16–24°C combined with a relative humidity of 45%–60%. Overall, these results suggest that reduction in the medfly population due to D. longicaudata activity is feasible and provide information about the optimal time period for parasitoid release in the field. In conclusion, D. longicaudata has a significant potential to control C. capitata in the Mediterranean region. 相似文献

Abstract. To reconstruct the evolution of reproductive isolation in the ectomycorrhizal Hebeloma crustuliniforme aggregate (Basidiomycetes), phylogenetic relationships were determined between strains that belong to a clade consisting of nine intercompatibility groups (ICGs, biological species). Four of these nine ICGs are partially compatible and belong to the H. crustuliniforme aggregate. Different levels of partial compatibility have been found between these four ICGs. Between ICGs 3 and 4, 15% of the combinations were compatible. One strain was compatible with all isolates of both ICGs 3 and 4 and also with one isolate of ICG 2. Both a nuclear phylogeny, based on ribosomal IGS sequence data, and a mitochondrial phylogeny, based on a group-I intron located in the large subunit ribosomal RNA gene (LrRNA), were reconstructed. The level of incompatibility was compared with the phylogenetic history of individuals belonging to this clade.
Different relationships were found between the level of compatibility and the relative age of the most recent common ancestor (MRCA) for different ICGs. On the one hand, the evolution of incompatibility between ICGs 2 and 3/4 is most consistent with the class of "divergence- first" models because a positive correlation was found between the relative age of the MRCA and the level of incompatibility for ICG 2 versus 3/4. On the other hand, the lack of such a correlation for ICGs 3 and 4 shows that (partial) incompatibility between these ICGs has arisen without strong divergence. The ecological (and to a lesser extent geographical) differences found between ICGs 3 and 4 suggest that selection for incompatibility, associated with host tree preference, has been important in the evolution of incompatibility between these two ICGs. The incongruence between the nuclear and mitochondrial trees for ICG 1 could be explained by a hybrid origin of this ICG, with different donors of the mitochondrial and nuclear sequences. 相似文献

Agricultural ecosystems are by their very nature novel and by definition the more general biodiversity associated with them must likewise constitute a novel community. Here, we examine the community of arboreally foraging ants in the coffee agroecosystem of Puerto Rico. We surveyed 20 coffee plants in 25 farms three times in a period of one year. We also conducted a more spatially explicit sampling in two of the farms and conducted a species interaction study between the two most abundant species, Wasmannia auropunctata and Solenopsis invicta, in the laboratory. We find that the majority of the most common species are well‐known invasive ants and that there is a highly variable pattern of dominance that varies considerably over the main coffee producing region of Puerto Rico, suggesting an unusual modality of community structure. The distribution pattern of the two most common species, W. auropunctata and S. invicta, suggests strong competitive exclusion. However, they also have opposite relationships with the percent of shade cover, with W. auropunctata showing a positive relationship with shade, while S. invicta has a negative relationship. The spatial distribution of these two dominant species in the two more intensively studied farms suggests that young colonies of S. invicta can displace W. auropunctata. Laboratory experiments confirm this. In addition to the elaboration of the nature and extent of this novel ant community, we speculate on the possibilities of its active inclusion as part of a biological control system dealing with several coffee pests, including one of the ants itself, W. auropunctata. 相似文献
