The 4th international melanoma congress of the Society for Melanoma Research (SMR), organized by Marianne Berwick (University of New Mexico), Paul Chapman (Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center), Rene Gonzalez (University of Colorado) and Ze'ev Ronai (Burnham Institute), was held at the Marriott Hotel in downtown New York on November 2007. The congress was attended by a record high number of attendees (over 500 delegates) who joined to discuss recent advances in melanoma biology and therapy. About 40% of the participants arrived from 39 countries, a testament to the high impact of this annual gathering on the international melanoma community. Over 120 of the participants were students or postdoctoral fellows, representing a most impressive fraction of young scientists engaged in melanoma research. The meeting consisted of more than 50 plenary and minisymposia presentations, stimulating the exchange of unpublished data and novel ideas, and helping to forge new collaborations that are anticipated to facilitate significant advances in basic, translational and clinical melanoma research. Another major focus of this meeting was over 160 posters, which were heavily attended and provided an effective forum for extensive informal discussions. This report will highlight the major scientific themes and advances of this most successful meeting, and provide a useful perspective on the current state of melanoma research, as well as where the field should be heading.  相似文献

The Bicarbonate Transport Meeting was held as a satellite meeting of the 53rd Annual Meeting of the Canadian Society of Biochemistry, Molecular and Cellular Biology (CSBMCB): Membrane Proteins in Health and Disease. The meeting covered the modern history of bicarbonate transporter proteins and brought together the major workers in the field. Ron Kopito recounted the story of the first determination of the amino acid sequence for a bicarbonate transporter, AE1/Band 3, 25?years earlier while working with Harvey Lodish at Harvard, while Tomohiro Yamaguchi and Teruhisa Hirai presented up-to-date data on AE1 structure obtained using electron crystallography. The meeting further spanned the spectrum of bicarbonate transporters, with sessions devoted to Cl-/HCO3- exchangers, Na+/HCO3- co-transporters, the link to carbonic anhydrase, and the SLC26 family of bicarbonate transporters expressed broadly in humans, yeast, and bacteria.  相似文献

The Satellite Meeting on Na+/H+ Exchangers, held on 17 April 2010, covered a range of new developments in this field. The symposium was chaired by Dr. Larry Fliegel, University of Alberta, and the speakers were Dr. John Orlowski of McGill University, Dr. Jan Rainey of Dalhousie University, Dr. Etana Padan of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Dr. Masa Numata of The University of British Columbia, Dr. Pavel Dibrov from the University of Manitoba, Dr. Todd Alexander of the University of Alberta, and Grant Kemp of the University of Alberta. Talks ranged from organellar pH homeostasis to structure and function of Na+/H+ exchanger proteins. Highlights of the symposium included elucidation of the structure of transmembrane regions of the NHE1 isoform and development of a new model of the NHE1 protein based on the E. coli Na+/H+ exchanger. The symposium brought together scientists from different corners of the world. The discussions that followed were lively and many scientists received constructive comments from their peers.  相似文献

This meeting report summarizes the proceedings of the "eGenomics: Cataloguing our Complete Genome Collection IV" workshop held June 6-8, 2007, at the National Institute for Environmental eScience (NIEeS), Cambridge, United Kingdom. This fourth workshop of the Genomic Standards Consortium (GSC) was a mix of short presentations, strategy discussions, and technical sessions. Speakers provided progress reports on the development of the "Minimum Information about a Genome Sequence" (MIGS) specification and the closely integrated "Minimum Information about a Metagenome Sequence" (MIMS) specification. The key outcome of the workshop was consensus on the next version of the MIGS/MIMS specification (v1.2). This drove further definition and restructuring of the MIGS/MIMS XML schema (syntax). With respect to semantics, a term vetting group was established to ensure that terms are properly defined and submitted to the appropriate ontology projects. Perhaps the single most important outcome of the workshop was a proposal to move beyond the concept of "minimum" to create a far richer XML schema that would define a "Genomic Contextual Data Markup Language" (GCDML) suitable for wider semantic integration across databases. GCDML will contain not only curated information (e.g., compliant with MIGS/MIMS), but also be extended to include a variety of data processing and calculations. The meeting Membrane Proteins in Health and Disease featured 6 sessions and 2 satellite meetings. At the opening session, Gunnar von Heijne delivered a plenary lecture entitled Insertion of Membrane Proteins into the Endoplasmic Reticulum. The following session topics were Membrane Protein Trafficking and Folding, Regulation of Membrane Proteins, Membrane Protein Structure, Membrane Proteins in Diverse Species, and Membrane Proteins and Diseases. The satellite meetings discussed bicarbonate transporters and Na+/H+ exchangers. Together the 21 lectures and 106 posters presented at the meeting spanned the full spectrum of current research into membrane protein structure and function.  相似文献
