Hatching failure within clutches of eggs occurs to varying degrees in many avian species. We investigated predictors of hatching failure in a population of Florida Scrub‐Jays, for which hatching success has been monitored for 15 years. We assessed whether hatching failure was related to parental traits (e.g. age, experience as a pair or body condition), lay date, social structure (e.g. number of helpers), environmental conditions, or some combination of these. We used linear mixed models and Akaike’s information criterion to determine the models that best explain observed patterns of hatching failure. The best model showed that increased hatching failure was associated with below‐average rainfall during the breeding season, and was more common for newly established breeding pairs than for pairs that had previously produced one or more clutches together. Other contributing models suggested that hatching failure was greatest for the youngest and oldest female breeders. Some aspects of our findings are consistent with conclusions drawn from other species. However, as a whole, our analyses suggest that hatching failure in the Florida Scrub‐Jay is influenced by a complex set of environmental and parental factors.  相似文献

The delimitation of populations, defined as groups of individuals linked by gene flow, is possible by the analysis of genetic markers and also by spatial models based on dispersal probabilities across a landscape. We combined these two complimentary methods to define the spatial pattern of genetic structure among remaining populations of the threatened Florida scrub-jay, a species for which dispersal ability is unusually well-characterized. The range-wide population was intensively censused in the 1990s, and a metapopulation model defined population boundaries based on predicted dispersal-mediated demographic connectivity. We subjected genotypes from more than 1000 individual jays screened at 20 microsatellite loci to two Bayesian clustering methods. We describe a consensus method for identifying common features across many replicated clustering runs. Ten genetically differentiated groups exist across the present-day range of the Florida scrub-jay. These groups are largely consistent with the dispersal-defined metapopulations, which assume very limited dispersal ability. Some genetic groups comprise more than one metapopulation, likely because these genetically similar metapopulations were sundered only recently by habitat alteration. The combined reconstructions of population structure based on genetics and dispersal-mediated demographic connectivity provide a robust depiction of the current genetic and demographic organization of this species, reflecting past and present levels of dispersal among occupied habitat patches. The differentiation of populations into 10 genetic groups adds urgency to management efforts aimed at preserving what remains of genetic variation in this dwindling species, by maintaining viable populations of all genetically differentiated and geographically isolated populations.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Many birds lose mass when feeding dependent young and multiple hypotheses have been proposed to explain this loss. The reproductive‐stress hypothesis suggests that mass loss results from an energy deficit. The flight‐efficiency hypothesis suggests that breeders lose mass in advance of feeding young to save energy during flight. The reserve‐mobilization hypothesis suggests that female breeders accumulate energy reserves during egg production and incubation and mobilize those reserves to meet their own energy needs after eggs hatch. Finally, birds may lose mass due to gonadal regression. From 1999 to 2001, we attracted Florida Scrub‐Jays (Aphelocoma coerulescens), sedentary cooperative breeders, to a portable electronic balance. Our objective was to determine which hypotheses might best explain mass variation during breeding. Both male and female Florida Scrub‐Jays lost mass during the period of nestling care (males, 3.2%; females, 6.5%), but not when feeding fledglings, despite this being the period of peak effort. Such results are consistent with both the flight‐efficiency and reserve‐mobilization (females only) hypotheses. We also found a significant negative influence of brood size on mass change in males, providing support for the reproductive‐stress hypothesis, and we conclude that, for males, both the flight‐efficiency and reproductive‐stress hypotheses apply. For female scrub‐jays, our results were consistent with the flight‐efficiency and energy‐reserve mobilization hypotheses, both of which view mass loss as beneficial.  相似文献

Summary The data of Woolfenden and Fitzpatrick (1984) show a statistically significant asymmetry in the sex ratio of non-breeders when one of the breeders is not the non-breeder's parent. I propose that the asymmetry is attributable to a combination of two factors acting on non-breeders: the value of inheriting a territory, and incest avoidance. Although natal territories are only occasionally inherited by non-breeders, and then apparently only by males, therate of inheritance is significantly higher for parent/step-parent breeders (n=6) than when both breeders are the non-breeder's parents (n=1). An alternative hypothesis, that stepparents determine the non-breeder asymmetry by ousting potential rivals, might also explain the data, but evidence is currently lacking.  相似文献

Human modification of habitats can reduce reproductive success by providing novel cues to which birds may respond with behaviors that are actually maladaptive in those environments. Ad libitum human‐provided foods may provide the perception that urban habitats are food‐rich even as natural food availability decreases. Similarly, human activity may increase the perception that predation risk is high even as natural predators may decrease in abundance. In response, birds may reduce parental care with a subsequent cost to successful reproduction. Florida Scrub‐Jays (Aphelocoma coerulescens) in suburban areas have lower nest success during the nestling period than do wildland jays, possibly the result of such maladaptive responses, but maybe because of ecological differences with wildlands. We manipulated adult perception of predation risk and the availability of nestling foods in suburban and wildland areas to determine if these factors influenced parental care and nestling begging, and if the behavioral responses of adults influence nest survival during the nestling stage. Experimentally increasing perception of predation risk reduced parental care by both suburban and wildland females, but did not influence care by males. Increasing food availability, but not predation risk, had little influence on parental care, but resulted in decreased nestling begging rates and an increase in the frequency (pitch) of begging calls in both habitats. However, neither parental care nor food availability influenced nest survival during the nestling stage. Instead, the presence of helpers was the most important variable in nest survival analyses, suggesting that habitat‐specific differences in nest survival during the nestling stage were not simply the result of maladaptive parental behavior or shortage of nestling food resources in the suburban habitat. The lack of helpers combined with ecological differences, such as the abundance of nest predators, may be why fewer nests of Florida Scrub‐Jays survive during this stage in suburban areas.  相似文献

We isolated nine microsatellite loci from the Guanacaste tree (Enterolobium cyclocarpum) and optimized them for future research on breeding populations of this species. Loci were screened across 53 individuals from one population and were shown to be variable with the number of alleles per locus ranging from five to 15. Polymorphic information content ranged from 0.420 to 0.900 and observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.547 to 0.906.  相似文献

Odonates (dragonflies and damselflies) are important indicators for monitoring anthropogenic impacts on freshwater ecosystems. We developed a panel of microsatellite loci for the keeled skimmer Orthetrum coerulescens, a libellulid dragonfly inhabiting small streams. By using two different isolation techniques, nine microsatellite loci have been isolated. Screening of 209 individuals resulted in an overall number of 88 alleles, ranging from three to 19 alleles per locus. The observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.37 to 0.83. One locus showed significant deviation from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium.  相似文献

Five dinucleotide markers were isolated and optimized from a microsatellite‐enriched genomic library obtained from the sandbar shark, Carcharhinus plumbeus. Genotypic distributions of all markers were found to be in conformance with the expectations of Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium with four to 39 alleles present per locus. We amplified these loci in two female sharks and their litters. A maternal allele was recovered at each locus in all progeny indicating reliable amplification. More than two paternal alleles were recovered across both litters indicating genetic polyandry. Additionally, these markers were amplified across 10 carcharhiniform species to examine their utility in other studies.  相似文献

We have developed di‐ and tetra‐nucleotide microsatellite markers for the silver‐lipped pearl oyster Pinctada maxima. Screening of approximately 50 000 clones resulted in the identification of 74 microsatellites. Fluorescent PCR was optimized for eight polymorphic loci. In a sample of 1637 individuals, these eight loci possessed between 14 and 68 alleles (average 29.8), with observed and expected heterozygosity ranging from 0.479 to 0.891 and 0.872 to 0.972, respectively.  相似文献

The effects of philopatry on levels of genetic differentiation were examined in the Aphelocoma jays through comparisons of gray-breasted jays (A. ultramarina; highly philopatric) and scrub jays (A. coerulescens; dispersing). Gray-breasted jays breed cooperatively in groups of up to 25 individuals, with individuals typically breeding either on the natal territory or on adjacent territories. Western North American scrub jays breed in non-cooperative pairs, with individuals typically dispersing at least 0.5 km, and often much farther. Genetic differentiation among six populations in northern Mexico and the south-western United States in each of the species was compared using starch-gel electrophoresis of protein products of 29 presumptive genetic loci. Strong differences in levels of genetic differentiation exist between the two species, both when measured using F-statistics and in terms of the slope of the isolation by distance relationship. These results suggest that social systems involving high degrees of philopatry may lead to considerably elevated rates of genetic differentiation and speciation.  相似文献

Here we presented 10 polymorphic microsatellite loci obtained from scarlet ibis through an enriched genomic library. The analysis of 45 individuals from three Brazilian natural populations showed allelic diversity ranged from three to 17 alleles, observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.03 to 0.92, and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.06 to 0.92. These highly variable microsatellite loci can provide means for assessing overall genetic variation in its remnant natural populations, which may help the development of effective conservation programs.  相似文献

The forest tree Santalum insulare is endemic to the archipelagos of eastern Polynesia and is threatened by important anthropic pressures. In order to investigate the genetic diversity and structure of this species, we developed eight pairs of primers for nuclear microsatellites. One hundred and sixty‐two individuals distributed in 10 islands were analysed. These loci were all polymorphic and displayed three to 15 alleles per locus. Significant Hardy–Weinberg deviation was detected and interpreted as a result of Wahlund effect. These markers constitute an efficient tool in investigating the genetic patterns of S. insulare populations.  相似文献

The ascidian Microcosmus squamiger is native to Australia and has recently spread worldwide. It has become a pest in some littoral communities within its introduced range. An enriched genomic library of M. squamiger resulted in a total of eight polymorphic loci that were genotyped in 20 individuals from a population within its introduced range, and 20 individuals more from a native population. The mean number of alleles per locus was 5.33 and mean observed heterozygosity was 0.432. No significant linkage disequilibrium was found among loci pairs. Platyscapa awekei DNA was enriched for several repeat motifs. Sequencing of 48 transformed colonies showed that 22 contained microsatellite loci. Eleven of these loci were tested and six of them proved to be reliable and variable. As expected from these wasps’ biology, FIS was high (= 0.423), indicating frequent sibmating. Notwithstanding, we estimate that dispersing males may secure as much as 8% of all matings.  相似文献

Twelve microsatellite markers were isolated from chub Leuciscus cephalus Linné, 1766 (Cyprinidae), a freshwater fish widely distributed in Europe. We assessed the level of genetic diversity for these loci in 24 individuals sampled in the Rhone river watershed. Nine loci were polymorphic, displaying from two to 13 alleles per locus with expected heterozygosity ranging from 0.160 to 0.887. Simultaneous migration of different polymerase chain reaction products was developed for routine analysis of L. cephalus populations.  相似文献

Fifteen primer pairs were designed for 14 polymorphic microsatellite loci, which were isolated and characterized from genomic libraries of Rhynchosporium secalis. Conditions for multiplexing and simultaneous genotyping of up to eight loci in a single run are described. The number of alleles per polymorphic locus ranged from two to 13 in populations from Switzerland and Australia. Genotypic diversity ranged from 61.5 to 66.7. Gene diversity ranged from 0.08 to 0.89 for individual polymorphic loci, with averages of 0.54 and 0.62 for the populations from Switzerland and Australia, respectively. Variable levels of polymorphism make these ideal markers for population genetic analyses.  相似文献
