Ant distribution and behavioural dominance is examined at nine sites along an elevational gradient (1400–2600 m) in south eastern Arizona, in order to classify North American species according to a functional group scheme used extensively in Australia. The functional groups are then used as a basis for determining patterns of community structure along the environmental gradient, and for comparing community structure between Australia and North America. Quantitative information on species com- position was obtained from pitfall traps, and patterns of ant abundance at tuna baits were used to determine relative behavioural dominance among taxa. A total of eighty-three species from twenty-eight genera was recorded along the elevational gradient, with site species richness ranging from four (high elevation Douglas fir forest) to thirty-three (mid elevation oak–juniper woodland). There was a strong correlation between ant abundance and richness, which was not an artefact of sampling intensity. The most common ants were species of Forelius, Monomorium, Crematogaster and Pheidole at the three desert sites, species of Formica, Pheidole and Crematogaster at the three woodland sites, and species of Prenolepis and Formica at one forest site. No species were abundant at two other forest sites. The most common species in traps also tended to be the most common species at baits. In terms of behavioural dominance, highly competitive ants included species of Solenopsis, Forelius, Monomorium and Liometopum. Species of Pheidole and Crematogaster tended to be moderately competitive, whereas species of Dory- myrmex, Myrmica, Camponotus and Formica (fusca gp) had low competitive ability. On the basis of these results and on published records of other taxa, North American ants were assigned to functional groups as follows (major taxa only given here): Dominant Dolichoderinae—Forelius, Liome- topum; Subordinate Camponotini—Camponotus; Hot Climate Specialists—Pogonomyrmex, Myrmecocystus; Cold Climate Specialists—Formica (rufa, exsecta and microgyna groups), Leptothorax, Stenamma, Lasius, Prenolepis; Cryptic Species—Smithistruma, Solenopsis (subgenus Diplorhop- trum), Acanthomyops; Opportunists—Formica (fusca group), Myrmica, Paratrechina, Dorymyrmex; Generalized Myr- micinae—Pheidole, Crematogaster, Monomorium; Specialist Predators—no major taxa. Functional group composition varied systematically along the elevation gradient: Dominant Dolichoderinae, Generalized Myrà micinae and Hot Climate Specialists were predominant at desert sites; Generalized Myrmicinae and Opportunists were predominant at woodland sites; and Opportunists and Cold Climate Specialists were predominant at forest sites. These patterns are consistent with published studies from elsewhere in North America. Almost all North American taxa can be matched with what appear to be ecologically equivalent taxa in Australia, and biogeographic patterns of functional group composition are broadly similar across the two continents. The major differences are that Australian ant communities are far richer in species, and are almost always dominated by dolichoderines, particularly species of Iridomyrmex. Generalized myrmicines are subdominant to dolichoderines in Australia, but are the behaviourally dominant ants throughout the warmer parts of North America. In cool-temperate North America, species of Formica (especially rufa and exsecta groups) are behaviourally dominant, as they are throughout the Palearctic. Some major features of the North American fauna can be linked to its poor representation of Dominant Dolichoderinae, including (1) the relatively low degree of physiological, morphological and behavioural specialization of Hot Climate Specialists; (2) behavioural dominance by formicines in cool-temperate habitats; and (3) the susceptibility to invasion by behaviourally dominant species such as the imported fire ant Solenopsis invicta and the Argentine ant Linepithema humile.  相似文献

There are few studies dedicated to species of the Order Parmales all over the world. All 12 taxa described are part of the marine ultraplankton (less than 5 μm). Analysis of filtered samples from the Gulf of Tehuantepec yielded specimens of two taxa of the group. One is a new species, belonging to the genus Tetraparma. Tetraparma insecta sp. nov. is solitary and spherical (2.8–3.8 μm diameter), and all plates lack ornamentations or knobs, the walls are smooth, and only the plate junctions are seen. The shield plates are convex and show a conspicuous rim, some of them with an indentation. This species shows superficial similarities with Tetraparma pelagica, the other species described of the genus, and is very similar to siliceous forms, previously found, with no formal name. The other species is the taxon Triparma laevis form mexicana (Kosman) stat. nov., earlier described for Mexican waters, which has an irregular ala, the shield plates have knobs at the center, the triradiate plates show a “Y”‐shaped keel, and the walls of plates and ala show minute granules. Tetraparma insecta was distributed widely in the study area and was relatively abundant, reaching a density of 4 × 104·L?1, with an evident preference for subsurface waters (10–20 m depth), whereas T. laevis form mexicana was rare and scarce. Both species seem to be restricted to tropical–subtropical waters. We discuss the taxonomy of Parmales, especially concerning the category of subspecies within the group. Parmales is a widespread group in cold and tropical waters.  相似文献

Summary The species composition of the ichthyofauna of Admiralty Bay, King George Island was determined from results of sampling using bottom trawls, gill-nets and long-lines. Thirty-five species from 24 genera and 10 families (Table 1) were found. The number of species increased with depth (e.g. 7 species at 100 m, 14 species at 255 m and 21 species at 540 m), a tendency characteristic of Antarctic waters. In the bay, the catch rate obtained with a bottom trawl (greater than 30 kg/h) was roughly ten times lower than the catch rate using the same gear on the shelf around the Island. Notothenia gibberifrons was the dominant species in all trawls. The majority of these fish (about 95%) were immature juveniles (Table 4). Younger fish were found to inhabit shallower waters (Fig. 1). The majority of the fish of species Notothenia coriiceps neglecta, Notothenia rossii marmorata, Notothenia nudifrons, Trematomus newnesi and Trematomus bernacchii preferred waters about 255 m deep. Fourteen specimens of a previously undescribed species of the genus Psilodraco (currently being described by H. DeWitt) were caught in the bay within the 146 to 540 m depth range. The rare zoarcid, Lycenchelys aratrirostris, was also caught in Admirality Bay; previously this species had only been reported from the Elephant Island region. In the case of Trematomus newnesi, the occurrence of scales in the interorbital space was noted (Fig. 2), an observation which verifies this feature as a distinct taxonomical criterion for this species.  相似文献

Associations of benthic invertebrates from Potter Cove (Antarctica) were defined from photo-transects. Density, percentage cover, species richness S′, diversity index H′, evenness index J′ and mean-size estimations were studied in relation to water depth down to 30 m. A clear bathymetric pattern was evident, with two different communities at 15 and 30 m, and a transition area between 20 and 25 m. At 15 m we observed a small number of taxa (nine in total), a high percentage of bare substratum (95%), and the dominant species were pennatulids and the bivalve Laternula elliptica. From 20 to 30 m the dominant species was the ascidian Molgula pedunculata and there was a slight increase in S′, H′ and J′, as well as in the mean size of individuals, especially in M. pedunculata, while the proportion of bare substratum showed a constant decrease with depth. Using multivariate analyses, three faunal assemblages related to depth were defined and a strong association of some species, mainly predators and opportunistic necrophages, with M. pedunculata was revealed. Ice impact (icebergs and anchor ice) seems to be the major regulating factor of benthic assemblages in shallow waters. Received: 28 April 1997 / Accepted: 17 August 1997  相似文献

Macrobenthic faunal associations, hydrography and sediment structure were examined at 14 stations in the Kara Sea. The stations were located in an area influenced by huge runoff from the Ob and Yenisei Rivers and in areas influenced by Barents Sea water. Sampling depths varied from 17 to 43 m, with one station at 195 m. The sediments were predominantly muddy but some stations were sandy. Three hundred and eighty-seven taxa were identified and Polychaeta, Crustacea and Mollusca were the most conspicuous. Species number, abundance and biomass varied widely among stations, and were generally higher in the more marine waters. Boreal-arctic species predominated, but an increase of arctic species from marine to the estuarine areas was evident. Five faunal associations were delineated by cluster analysis and suggested quite heterogeneous sampling areas. The most conspicuous species of each faunal association were Spiochaetopterus typicus, Tridonta borealis, Serripes groenlandicus, Portlandia arctica, and Marenzelleria arctia, respectively. The sedimentation rate, as well as depth, sediment structure and salinity, apparently influenced the main differences in the fauna. Accepted: 29 June 1999  相似文献

Svalbard bryozoan communities were investigated along a depth range from the surface to 296 m between the inner glacial fronts and fjord mouths during 2001 and 2002. The main study area was Kongsfjorden (79°N, 12°E). A total of 137 taxa of bryozoans were identified: 108 to species, 24 to genus, 3 to family, 1 to order and 1 to phylum level. Cluster and multidimensional scaling analyses revealed four distinct assemblages of bryozoans: shallow (0–40 m; 68 taxa), deep (40–296 m; 80 taxa), inner fjordic (three taxa) and an assemblage found on small stones in shallow waters (nine taxa). The inner fjordic assemblage was recorded from the front of tidal glaciers extending about 10 km out into the fjord. In terms of abundance, Celleporella hyalina Linnaeus dominated in shallow areas (18%), Hippothoa arctica Kluge (55%) in deep water, Alcyonidium disciforme Smitt (86%) proximate to glaciers fronts and Electra arctica Borg on small stones (98%). The species were classified according to their depth range as a stenobathic-shallow (46 taxa), stenobathic-deep (57 taxa) and eurybathic-generalist (21 taxa). Mean diversity measures did not show any significant differences between the shallow and deep communities. The bryozoan assemblages seem to be structured primarily by processes related to depth and sediment characteristics.  相似文献

Many rivers in southern Africa are increasingly threatened by accelerating geomorphological degradation due to unsustainable agricultural practices and deforestation. Thus, there is a critical need for biological indicators of morphological degradation in running waters. This study analysed the composition and abundance of Trichoptera taxa from 32 sites from rivers in eastern and northwestern Zimbabwe in relation to geomorphological and land use parameters. Redundancy analysis (RDA) and Spearman’s rank correlation analysis revealed that species in the genera Anisocentropus, Dyschimus, Lepidostoma, Leptocerina, Athripsodes, Parasetodes, Aethaloptera, Hydropsyche and Polymorphanisus were restricted to undisturbed forested sites, suggesting that these Trichoptera taxa may be used as indicators of structural degradation in watercourses. A species in the genus Hydroptila was the only Trichoptera taxon that showed a statistically significant numerical abundance at disturbed agricultural sites. Handling editor: D. Dudgeon  相似文献

A short-term laboratory study was conductedto investigate the effect of barley strawin controlling several common phytoplanktonand cyanobacterial species. Following aone-month incubation of barley straw incoarsely filtered fresh Potomac River andbrackish Patuxent River waters, the growthof six autotrophic taxa was followed inculture. Barley straw slurry reduced theyield of three taxa (Ankistrodesmusfalcatus, Chlorella capsulata, Isochrysis sp.) in comparison withcultures not receiving the slurry. Although no significant changes in growthwere detected with three other taxa (Cyclotella sp., Prorocentrumminimum, freshwater Pseudanabaenasp.), some patterns indicated potentialimpacts of the barley straw. First, ahigher addition of straw to Cyclotella sp. resulted in a lower biomassaccumulation than in cultures receivinglower levels. Second, the bloom-formingdinoflagellate Prorcentrum minimumwas apparently stimulated at low barleystraw levels, perhaps suggesting conditionsassociated with the straw(metals-chelation, bacterial-producednutrients) might stimulate dinoflagellategrowth. Third, species shifts wereobserved in two of the cultures, withbarley straw favoring shifts from Isochrysis to a Cyclotella sp. –Thalassiosira sp. mixture and shiftsfrom Pseudanabaena to a Pseudanabaena – Scenedesmus mixture. These results provide new records for thesusceptibility of freshwater and brackishphytoplankton taxa to barley strawexposure, including species-specificresponses and shifts in species dominancein mixed assemblages.  相似文献

The current study presents the ostracod communities recovered from 26 shallow waterbodies in southern Kenya, combined with an ecological assessment of habitat characteristics. A total of 37 waterbodies were sampled in 2001 and 2003, ranging from small ephemeral pools to large permanent lakes along broad gradients in altitude (700–2 800 m) and salinity (37–67 200 µS cm?1). Between 0 and 12 species were recorded per site. Lack of ostracods was associated with either hypersaline waters, or the presence of fish in fresh waters. Three of the 32 recovered ostracod taxa, Physocypria sp., Sarscypridopsis cf. elizabethae and Oncocypris mulleri, combined a wide distribution with frequent local dominance. Canonical correspondence analysis on species–environment relationships indicated that littoral vegetation, altitude, surface water temperature and pH best explain the variation in ostracod communities. Presence of fish and water depth also influence species occurrence, with the larger species being more common in shallow waterbodies lacking fish. Based on Chao’s estimator of total regional species richness, this survey recovered about two-thirds (60–68%) of the regional ostracod species pool. Scanning electron micrographs (SEM) of the valve morphology of 14 ostracod taxa are provided, in order to facilitate their application in biodiversity and water-quality assessments and in palaeoenvironmental reconstruction.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the reproductive cycle of a high‐elevation population of Aspidoscelis costata costata (1500–1600 m) and compare its reproductive cycle with that of other populations, species, and closely related genera. Adult male Acostata costata lizards were collected, and the reproductive tracts were removed and subjected to histological analyses. Testicular activity commences in March with maximum testicular activity and highest sperm abundance (in the epididymides) occurring between May and July. The testis remains at peak activity until September when a late regression/early quiescent phase is observed. Leydig cells follow this same pattern except these hormone‐producing cells remain at maximum secretory level through September. Sperm are present in the epididymides in April–September. This pattern is consistent with the spring recrudescence found in a multitude of male lizard taxa. However, this differs from the continuous cycle observed in some tropical Teiid species and other lizard taxa at high elevation. This study indicates that our knowledge about lizard spermatogenic cycles remains incomplete, and additional studies are required to fully understand the interactions between phenotype, evolution, phylogenetics and environment.  相似文献

We monitored the recruitment, survival, and growth of tree saplings on invasive (Larix kaempferi) versus native species (Betula and Populus) using 16 20 m × 20 m plots established along elevation gradient on the volcano Mount Koma, Japan, for 7 years because the sapling behaviors should determine forest structures. The crowding of overstory consists mostly of Larix decreased with increasing elevation. Larix recruits were conspicuous, particularly at middle elevation where overstory crowding was intermediate, while Betula recruits were least. Larix overstory crowding inhibited the recruitment of all the taxa, although intermediate crowding promoted the recruitment of Larix. The restriction of sapling emergence was conspicuous at lower elevation where the overstory crowding was highest, probably because of shading, and/or competition with overstory trees. Sapling recruitment for all taxa was restricted at higher elevation, due to high stresses derived from direct solar radiation and strong wind without overstory. The survival of saplings was 96% for Larix and Betula, while it was ca. 50% for Populus. Larix overstory decreased the survival and growth of all the taxa, except Larix survival and Betula growth. The results implied that Larix could establish by high survival once the recruits succeeded everywhere and native sapling regeneration was restricted by Larix overstory. Strong recruitment, survival, and growth of Larix, together with resistance to overstory crowding, enables it to dominate and persist in such disturbed areas regardless of the canopy closure.  相似文献

A review of diatoms found in highly acidic environments   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
DeNicola  Dean M. 《Hydrobiologia》2000,433(1-3):111-122
A review is presented of 28 studies in the literature of diatoms in environments at pH 3.5, including natural and anthropogenic acid sources. A total of 124 diatom taxa have been reported, but many are likely to have been accidental occurrences, because only a few specimens were found. Approximately 19 taxa abundant in at least one study or common in several studies are considered true inhabitants of highly acidic waters. These include: Achnanthes minutissima, Eunotia exigua, E. tenella, E. septentrionalis, E. osoresanensis, E. arcus, E. glacialis, E. pectinalis, Frustulia rhomboides, F. rhomboides var. saxonica, Nitzschia capitellata/subcapitellata, Nitzschia communis, Nitzschia pusilla, Nitzschia vasta, Pinnularia acoricola, P. obscura, P. braunii var. amphicephala, P. subcapitata and P. terminitina. There are inconsistencies in the taxonomy of several of these species and possible synonymies could lower the number of taxa to less than 9. Compared to diatom species richness in environments at pH 4.5–5.0, there are many fewer taxa in environments pH 3.5, suggesting a threshold between pH 4.5 and 3.5 below which many species are unable to maintain a population.  相似文献

Factors that set the altitudinal limits of plants have been relatively well explored for many land plant groups, but not for bryophytes. Bryophytes typically represent a significant portion of alpine floras with many species specific to highland systems. Differences between highland and lowland bryophytes have been underinvestigated. In the present study spanning three growing seasons, a subalpine and a lowland moss were both reciprocally planted as apical fragments and transplanted as adults between sites at 1400 m and 2000 m in the Front Ranges of the Rocky Mountains, Alberta. The lowland species, Mnium spinulosum, was less tolerant of conditions at 2000 m than the subalpine species, M. arizonicum, was to conditions at 1400 m. In particular, M. spinulosum had lower establishment from both apical fragments and spores at higher elevation sites. Both species had significantly lower establishment during the abnormally cold growing season of 1999, but fragments of M. arizonicum were better able to adjust their investment in establishment. The effect of a dominant feather moss, Hylocomium splendens, on establishment and transplant health was tested for M. arizonicum. Establishment of M. arizonicum was lower in Hylocomium mats than on bare humus regardless of site elevation suggesting allelopathy; however, stem survival in adult transplants was higher in Hylocomium mats than in Mnium dominated microsites at the higher elevation suggesting facilitation. Competition, rather than a lack of physiological plasticity, probably determines the lower elevation limit of the subalpine moss, while poor establishment ability at low temperatures accounts for the upper elevation limit of the montane moss. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Species distribution models for Amazonian trees have mostly been produced at scales and resolutions that are too broad and coarse for practical use in either conservation or forestry. On the other hand, several studies have shown that elevation and the medium‐resolution remote sensing data available via Landsat imagery can be successfully used to detect differences in plant species composition in Amazonia. Therefore, it seems likely that the same data can also be used to predict geographical distributions of individual taxa. Here we use remotely sensed data and a maximum entropy algorithm (MaxEnt) to generate landscape‐scale distribution models at 30‐m‐resolution for five economically important timber tree genera (Apuleia, Amburana, Crepidospermum, Dipteryx, and Manilkara). Individual Landsat Thematic Mapper bands and normalized difference vegetation index yielded acceptable model performance, and the use of averaging filters (3 × 3 and 5 × 5 pixel low‐pass filters) improved model performance further. Including elevation as a predictor also improved model performance for all the genera. Our results suggest that it is possible to use Landsat bands and elevation as predictors for modeling the potential distribution of tree species in lowland Amazonia at a fine enough resolution to facilitate the practical management of forest resources.  相似文献

The mid-Pleistocene Kolymbia Flora of Rhodes, Greece occurs in the Lindos Bay Clay facies group of the Rhodes Formation and was deposited in a marine setting at about a depth of 200 m. Recorded in the flora are the youngest presence of Glyptostrobus in the eastern Mediterranean, an extinct species of Pinus very similar to the modern relict Pinus canariensis, and a new species of the disjunct Cedrus. These taxa indicate that some relict plant taxa existed on Rhodes later than previously recognised. The late presence of Taxodiaceae in the eastern Mediterranean may demerit its usefulness for determining the Pliocene–Pleistocene boundary. The finding of Liquidambar, Zelkova and Fagus in the flora supports the idea of Rhodes, and possibly the eastern Mediterranean, as a refugium during the mid-Pleistocene. Similar fossil assemblages should be found in adjacent Turkey because the Lindos Bay Clay records an extensive marine transgression probably resulting from graben tectonics that lead to the ultimate separation of Rhodes from mainland Turkey.  相似文献

Understanding the drivers of phenological events is vital for forecasting species’ responses to climate change. We developed flexible Bayesian survival regression models to assess a 29‐year, individual‐level time series of flowering phenology from four taxa of Japanese cherry trees (Prunus spachiana, Prunus × yedoensis, Prunus jamasakura, and Prunus lannesiana), from the Tama Forest Cherry Preservation Garden in Hachioji, Japan. Our modeling framework used time‐varying (chill and heat units) and time‐invariant (slope, aspect, and elevation) factors. We found limited differences among taxa in sensitivity to chill, but earlier flowering taxa, such as P. spachiana, were more sensitive to heat than later flowering taxa, such as P. lannesiana. Using an ensemble of three downscaled regional climate models under the A1B emissions scenario, we projected shifts in flowering timing by 2100. Projections suggest that each taxa will flower about 30 days earlier on average by 2100 with 2–6 days greater uncertainty around the species mean flowering date. Dramatic shifts in the flowering times of cherry trees may have implications for economically important cultural festivals in Japan and East Asia. The survival models used here provide a mechanistic modeling approach and are broadly applicable to any time‐to‐event phenological data, such as plant leafing, bird arrival time, and insect emergence. The ability to explicitly quantify uncertainty, examine phenological responses on a fine time scale, and incorporate conditions leading up to an event may provide future insight into phenologically driven changes in carbon balance and ecological mismatches of plants and pollinators in natural populations and horticultural crops.  相似文献

Aim The distribution of neotropical butterflies of the tribe Pronophilini (Lepidoptera, Satyridae) was analysed with the aim of determining (i) the elevational ranges of distribution of each species (ii) the elevational gradient in diversity, and (iii) the existence of parapatric distributions of some closely related species pairs. Location The field study was carried out in the middle and upper section of the valley of the Río Albarregas, a tributary of the Río Chama on the southern slopes of the Serranía de la Culata, in the central part of the Cordillera de Mérida, Venezuela. Methods The material was collected along an elevational transect set on a trail leading from Merida to the Páramo de Los Conejos in the area known as Monte Zerpa. It consisted of a series of 32 collection sites set at every 25 m of altitude and covered an elevation from 2250 m to 3025 m. Results The ranges of Lymanopoda obsoleta, L. albocincta, L. zapatoza, Corades chelonis, C. pannonia, C. medeba, Mygona irmina, Pedaliodes epidipnis, P. japhleta, P. montagna and P. panyasis were all restricted to the lower half of the cloud forest zone and L. diezti, C. pax, P. polla, P. ornata and P. ferratilis were all restricted to the upper part. Two species, Erethris porphyria and Steroma bega, crossed the entire elevational range of the cloud forest zone. The biodiversity, as measured by Shannon’s index, attained a maximum at 2700 m, beyond which it gradually decreased. A parapatric distribution was confirmed for three pairs of closely related species: L. obsoleta and L. diezti, C. chelonis and C. pax and P. montagna and P. ferratilis. Main conclusions The peak in diversity at middle elevations seems to result from the overlapping ranges of species distributed over lower and upper parts of the cloud forest. Correlation of species composition at particular transect sites with elevation showed that increase in elevation was associated with an increase in species composition difference. Post‐mating isolation was suggested as a primary factor responsible for maintaining the parapatric distributions of species occupying the upper and lower zones and preventing their respective distributions from expanding.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of living coccolithophores was studied in the Western-Central Equatorial Pacific Ocean during November–December, 1990 and September–October, 1992. The highest local concentration of coccolithophores occurred at the thermocline in well-stratified waters, but at sea-surface level in dynamic waters. In total, 111 coccolithophore taxa were recognized, some of which exhibited hydrographically controlled variation in their absolute abundance. Gephyrocapsa oceanica and Oolithotus antillarum were abundant in the upwelling front. Most of the lower photic dwellers were abundant in the tropical to subtropical stations regardless of the water stratification. The coccolithophore flora of well-stratified waters could be distinguished from the upwelling front flora by the higher abundance of Umbellosphaera irregularis and lower abundance of G. oceanica. The temperature mixed-water flora was characterized by a high abundance of Emiliania huxleyi. The vertical distribution of all coccolithophore taxa, except three placolith-bearing species, Gephyrocapsa ericsonii, G. oceanica and E. huxleyi, was controlled by upper photic-zone temperature and water stratification. The upper or lower vertical distribution limits of many coccolithophore taxa coincided with the top of the thermocline. The most common 27 taxa were grouped into four ecological groups, Upper Photic-zone Group (UPG), Middle Photic-zone Group (MPG), Lower Photic-zone Group (LPG) and Omnipresent Group (OPG), on the basis of their vertical distribution. By analyzing the hydrographic control on the vertical distribution of these four ecological groups, four ecological assemblages were recognized: High Temperature; Warm Oligotrophic; Warm Eutrophic; and Temperate Mixed-water Assemblages. In equatorial waters, the total coccolithophore assemblage across the photic-zone was controlled by the population in the upper photic-zone. The UPG monopolized the upper photic-zone flora in the High Temperature Assemblage. In the Warn Oligotrophic-water Assemblage, common OPG accompanied abundant UPG in the upper photic-zone. The upper photic-zone of the Warm Eutrophic Assemblage consisted of UPG, MPG and OPG.Emiliania huxleyi and Gephyrocapsa oceanica, the major component of OPG, displayed intra-specific morphological variations. G. oceanica Type 1 was restricted to the upper photic-zone of well-stratified oligotrophic waters. Conversely, in these waters E. huxleyi Type C and G. oceanica Type 2 only occurred below the thermocline. These two taxa also coexist with G. oceanica Type 3 and E. huxleyi Type A in the upper photic zone of dynamic waters.  相似文献
