The effect of water temperature on growth responses of three common seagrass fish species that co‐occur as juveniles in the estuaries in Sydney (34° S) but have differing latitudinal ranges was measured: Pelates sexlineatus (subtropical to warm temperate: 27–35° S), Centropogon australis (primarily subtropical to warm temperate: 24–37° S) and Acanthaluteres spilomelanurus (warm to cool temperate: below 32° S). Replicate individuals of each species were acclimated over a 7 day period in one of three temperature treatments (control: 22° C, low: 18° C and high: 26° C) and their somatic growth was assessed within treatments over 10 days. Growth of all three species was affected by water temperature, with the highest growth of both northern species (P. sexlineatus and C. australis) at 22 and 26° C, whereas growth of the southern ranging species (A. spilomelanurus) was reduced at temperatures higher than 18° C, suggesting that predicted increase in estuarine water temperatures through climate change may change relative performance of seagrass fish assemblages.  相似文献

Grab samples of shallow (5–35 m) marine benthic sediments and epi- and infaunal assemblages were taken from nearshore regions around Casey Station, Windmill Islands, East Antarctica. A hierarchical, spatially nested sampling design was used with locations (kilometres apart), sites (hundreds of metres apart) and plots (tens of metres). Two potentially impacted, polluted locations (adjacent to a sewage outfall and an old garbage tip) were compared with two control locations in an asymmetrical design. Significant differences in assemblages were found between locations and between sites within locations. Significant differences in the abundances of taxa at several taxonomic levels (species, family, order, phylum) were found at all three spatial scales. Significant differences were also detected between the polluted and control locations. Compared with other Antarctic locations, the assemblages were dominated by crustaceans (90–97% of individuals) and there was a paucity of polychaete fauna at the locations sampled. Benthic divers are dependent on local resources and may therefore adopt different foraging strategies to cope with their energetic requirements in varying situations. We investigated the diet of gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) at Kerguelen Islands, comparing its spatial and temporal variations with the general prey distribution. The study was conducted at four sites over 2 years. In total, 212 stomach contents were collected over the entire breeding season. The diet was composed mainly of neritic fish and crustaceans, with important spatial and seasonal variations. Fish dominated the diet at localities facing the open sea (from 38.0% to 94.6% by mass), whereas crustaceans dominated at the more protected site (84.3% by mass). Fish were more abundant in the winter diet and Euphausia vallentini, the major crustacean species, was more abundant in the summer diet. No inter-year variations were detected. These results are consistent with local prey availability, and highlight the large plasticity of the gentoo penguin diet and foraging behaviour.  相似文献

Little information is available regarding fish diets in Antarctica and how they relate to prey availability. The primary objective of this work was to describe the diet of Trematomus bernacchii. The second objective was to compare prey taken with prey present in the benthos along a spatial gradient of prey abundance using Ivlev's Index of Electivity. All samples were collected from 4 different sites on the east side of McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. Fish were captured by divers at the same depth at each site and their stomachs were flushed for dietary analysis. The diet of T. bernacchii varied among sites, and prey selectivity varied inversely with prey abundance. Many of the prey taken by T. bernacchii were sedentary species suggesting that T. bernacchii is a hunt and peck predator.  相似文献

We test the hypothesis that predatory benthic fishes play a similar ecological role in different estuaries by displaying the same feeding strategy. We used whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) populations in four southern Brazilian estuaries (Mampituba (29°12′ S), Tramandaí (30°02′ S), Patos Lagoon (32°10′ S) and Chuí (33°44′ S)) as a model. We compared feeding strategies based on a graphical method proposed by Amundsen et al. [(1996) J Fish Biol. 48:607–614], with confidence intervals of frequency of occurrence of prey (FO) and prey-specific abundance (PSA) estimated by bootstrap analyses. We test differences among diets in the four estuaries used the ANOSIM and SIMPER analyses. We minimize the effect of fish size on prey selectivity by restricting the diet analysis to 70–130 mm size classes. Across all estuaries, infaunal prey was the dominant item in the whitemouth croaker’s diet. Most individuals fed on dominant infaunal prey such as Polychaetes (Chuí: FO = 0.55 ± 0.018 SD; PSA = 0.88 ± 0.016 and Mampituba: FO = 0.73 ± 0.037; PSA = 0.56 ± 0.056), Bivalves (Tramandaí: FO = 0.58 ± 0.032; PSA = 0.92 ± 0.024) and Tanaidaceans (Patos Lagoon: FO = 0.63 ± 0.027; PSA = 0.62 ± 0.043). A between-phenotype contribution to the niche width was observed in all four estuaries, where individuals generally consumed relatively large amounts of different prey types in the same habitat and season. Whitemouth croaker have a zoobenthivore feeding strategy and seemed to maintain the same feeding strategy in all the four estuaries. Specialization on consuming infaunal prey displayed by juveniles of whitemouth croaker could be an important factor leading to the successful colonization of South American estuaries.  相似文献

This study examined population density, habitat and diet of Dasyatis marianae, a recently discovered species, in the reef complex of Maracajaú in Rio Grande do Norte state, Brazil. The highest concentration of D. marianae occurred in seagrass beds. Habitat use differed significantly between sex and age classes, with females and juveniles using areas other than reefs. Females utilized primarily seagrass beds and juveniles occurred mainly along the sandy bottom near the beach, highlighting the importance of protecting these areas. Dasyatis marianae diet was characterized primarily by crustaceans (91·9% index of relative importance, IRI), including shrimp, crabs and lobsters. The availability of prey in different habitat types influences occupation by D. marianae, but the prey selectivity of D. marianae, among other factors, may affect this relationship. Intense shrimp and lobster fishing in the region probably has an effect on preferred prey resources of this ray. Information on feeding habits of this species contributes to a better understanding of trophic dynamics and food webs, which is critical if ecosystem principles are to be integrated into fisheries management.  相似文献

Although sympatric populations of sticklebacks occur commonly along the north-eastern coast of North America, very few studies have considered the interspecific relationships within such populations. This paper investigates prey selectivity, feeding behaviour and potential prey availability within sympatric populations from five brackish-water sites in New Brunswick. Differences between the diets of species from different sites were related to differences in the range of prey available. Fish collected from sites with abundant aquatic vegetation consumed greater numbers of prey than those from vegetation-poor sites. The proportions of prey types eaten by both adults and juveniles reflected prey species abundance at the different sites; thus shifts in diet over time were found to be related to changes in the abundance of potential prey and not to shifts in prey preference on the part of the fish. The size of prey consumed was related to mouth size; adult and juvenile Gasterosteus wheatlandi , having the smallest mouths, consumed the smallest prey. Differences in prey size detected in the four species studied were due to differences in the types of prey consumed. Laboratory experiments on feeding behaviour showed that adult Apeltes quadracus and Pungitius pungitius were more efficient at capturing benthic prey than were Gasterosteus aculeatus and G. wheatlandi. Competition for food is thought not to occur in these populations, because of the abundance of potential prey and the morphological constraints on feeding behaviour.  相似文献

We measured the extent of movement of carbon and its assimilation by invertebrates among estuarine habitats by analysing carbon stable isotopes of invertebrates collected along transects crossing the boundary of two habitats. The habitats were dominated by autotrophs with distinct isotope values: (1) mudflats containing benthic microalgae (mean −22.6, SE 0.6‰) and (2) seagrass and its associated epiphytic algae (similar values, pooled mean −9.8, 0.5‰). Three species of invertebrates were analysed: a palaemonid shrimp, Macrobrachium intermedium, and two polychaete worms, Nephtys australiensis and Australonereis ehlersi. All species had a similar narrow range of isotope values (−9 to −14‰), and showed no statistically significant relationship between position along transect and isotope values. Animals were relying on carbon from seagrass meadows whether they were in seagrass or on mudflats hundreds of metres away. Particulate organic matter collected from superficial sediments along the transects had similar values to animals (mean −11.1, SE 1.3‰) and also showed no significant relationship with position. The isotope values of these relatively immobile invertebrates and the particulate detritus suggest that carbon moves from subtidal seagrass meadows to mudflats as particulate matter and is assimilated by invertebrates. This assimilation might be direct in the case of the detritivorous worm, A. ehlersi, but must be via invertebrate prey in the case of the carnivorous worm, N. australiensis and the scavenging shrimp, M. intermedium. The extent of movement of carbon among habitats, especially towards shallower habitats, is surprising since in theory, carbon is more likely to move offshore in situations such as the current study where habitats are in relatively open, unprotected waters.  相似文献

A decrease in seagrass cover and a commensurate increase in Caulerpa taxifolia distribution in Moreton Bay have prompted concern for the impact that habitat change may have on faunal communities. Therefore, it is important to understand the patterns of habitat use. We examined habitat selection of three common seagrass species: double-ended pipefish (Syngnathoides biaculeatus), eastern trumpeter (Pelates quadrilineatus), and fan-bellied leatherjacket (Monacanthus chinensis) using a mesocosm experiment. Fish were given three possible habitat pairings (1) seagrass and C. taxifolia, (2) seagrass and unvegetated, and (3) C. taxifolia and unvegetated. Observation trials were conducted during the day and night over two days. In all trials, fish preferred vegetated habitat (seagrass or C. taxifolia) over unvegetated habitat (sand). In seagrass and C. taxifolia trials, all species preferred seagrass significantly over C. taxifolia. Habitat use patterns did not differ between day and night trials. Caulerpa taxifolia provides a valuable structured habitat in the absence of seagrass; however, it is unclear if C. taxifolia meadows provide other resource benefits to fishes beyond that of shelter.  相似文献

Juvenile trumpeters Pelates sexlineatus , two main prey items (amphipods and polychaetes) and seagrass constituents (detritus, young and old leaves of Zostera capricorni ) were collected from two sites within six estuaries, to compare the spatial variability of elemental composition (Li, Mn, Sr, Cd, Ba and Pb). Average elemental values were lower in the fish otoliths except for Sr. Significant differences in elemental composition of otoliths were detected among estuaries (Mn and Pb). Spatial differences in concentrations of Cd were found in amphipods and polychaetes; the latter also showed differences for Ba and Pb. Detritus and Z. capricorni leaves showed appreciable spatial differences for most of the elements. Spatial variability between sites was generally high. There were differences in the multivariate composition of trace elements found in the otoliths of fish among estuaries. One estuary was consistently separated from the other estuaries in the ordinations. Significant correlations were detected between concentrations of Mn in otoliths and concentrations in prey, Z. capricorni and detritus. A significant relationship was also detected between Pb in otoliths and detritus. There were significant correlations between concentrations of Mn, Sr and Ba in detritus and that in otoliths. The study demonstrated that trophic transfer and habitat constituents may be considered as a potential source for some of the elemental accumulation in fish otoliths.  相似文献

The diets of five species of Labridae in south-western Australia were examined to determine whether: (1) grazing of seagrass and epiphytic algae is a prominent feature of the food web within the deeper seagrass meadows of this temperate region; (2) levels of grazing differ among different seagrass systems; and diets differ among these closely-related species. Fish were collected seasonally from three seagrass habitats mainly comprising either Posidonia sinuosa, Posidonia coriacea or Amphibolis griffithii between the summer of 1996/97 and spring of 1997. Consumption of considerable amounts of algae and seagrass by Odax acroptilus and seagrass by Haletta semifasciata indicates that macrophyte grazing by fish is a component of the trophic dynamics of south-western Australian seagrass meadows. O. acroptilus and H. semifasciata were both omnivorous, feeding on a range of epifauna, infauna and flora, whereas Siphonognathus radiatus, Neoodax balteatus and Notolabrus parilus were carnivorous, feeding predominantly on motile epifauna, such as molluscs and crustaceans. The level of macrophyte grazing is likely to be underestimated in temperate offshore meadows of P. sinuosa and A. griffithii where omnivorous labrids, monacanthids and terapontids are abundant. Stable isotope data for O. acroptilus from the study region suggest that animal prey is more important to tissue maintenance than macrophyte material. Macrophytes may be grazed to acquire attached animal prey or for fulfilling energy requirements. Based on the distribution of prey, it appears that species in A. griffithii meadows forage within and below the seagrass canopy, whilst species in P. sinuosa meadows are likely to forage towards the basal area of this seagrass.  相似文献

Blackfin tuna (Thunnus atlanticus) is a small epipelagic oceanic species known only from the western Atlantic. In Tobago, the Lesser Antilles, blackfin tuna is caught by the artisanal fishery. The diet of this species was examined during the summer of 2004 for fish landed at the Charlotteville fish market in Tobago. T. atlanticus ranged from 32 to 91 cm FL (0.7–12.4 kg). Overall numerical abundance of prey items comprised fish (48%), crustaceans (46%) and cephalopods (6%). Prey species included small pelagics such as anchovies (ranked as most important prey overall), juveniles of larger pelagics such as jacks, juveniles of fish found in coral reef communities as adults, e.g. squirrelfishes, and some mesopelagic species. The importance of major diet categories differed significantly with predator size, with fishes becoming more important and crustaceans less important with increasing size of the blackfin tuna. This study has improved our scant knowledge of the blackfin tuna diet in the Lesser Antilles.  相似文献

The diet of pearly razorfish Xyrichtys novacula, caught monthly along the shores of the Island of Lampedusa, appeared to be mainly composed of crustaceans, followed by colonial ascidians, molluscs and polychaetes. Among prey, sand dwellers and phanerogam‐associated species were recorded. In winter months, the diet was characterized by a small number of prey items, dominated by colonial ascidians, while in spring and summer a wider prey array was recorded. Dietary indices show that X. novacula do not strictly exploit benthic prey but also pelagic organisms, such as copepods. This feeding behaviour reached its peak in March and October, when the abundance of primary consumers was at its highest after phytoplankton blooms. Furthermore, X. novacula caught prey organisms according to their availability and seasonal patterns during their life cycles, irrespective of fish size.  相似文献

The Galician rias are singular and complex estuarine systems of great economic importance. Seagrasses are key elements of the ecosystem and favor the maintenance of high species diversity in benthic communities. Nevertheless, the ecological role of seagrass meadows in the Galician rias has been only partially assessed. Peracarid crustaceans are an important component of soft-bottom faunas and have great importance for the structure of benthic assemblages. In this work, species diversity, patterns of distribution and seasonal fluctuations of peracarids (Crustacea, Peracarida) are studied in estuarine sediments colonized by two species of Zostera (Z. marina and Z. noltii) at the O Grove inlet (Ría de Arousa, Galicia, NW Iberian Peninsula). The spatial distribution of peracarid assemblages was characterized by high numerical dominances due to a few species, particularly tanaidaceans. The temporal study at a Z. marina meadow showed a strongly seasonal pattern defined by great fluctuations of the amphipod population, the latter being the dominant group in abundance and number of species. The highest numbers of species and individuals were observed in September, with minimum values in March. Analyses pointed out a high correlation among the granulometric features of the studied bottoms and the faunistic attributes. Nevertheless, the presence of the seagrasses should influence in a major way the hydrodynamic and sedimentary features of the habitat and utterly the spatial and temporal patterns observed in the peracarid assemblage in the O Grove inlet.  相似文献

The zooxanthellate mangrove jellyfish Cassiopea sp. represents a prominent invasive species and a potential bioindicator for nutrient monitoring in coral reefs. However, information about its spatial distribution in combination with abundance, habitat specificity and life cycle elements is barely available. This study, therefore, presents the results of field surveys conducted within four different benthic habitat types (coral reef, seagrass meadow, reef-sand transition and sand flat) in the Northern Red Sea. Cassiopea sp. exhibited a highly patchy distribution within the entire study area with mean abundance of 1.6 ± 0.3 animals m−2 and benthic coverage of 3.2%. Within coral reef habitats, maximum abundance of up to 31 animals m−2 and benthic coverage of up to 20% were detected. Additionally, this study revealed that 65% of all observed Cassiopea specimens were associated with the commensalistic crustacean mysid Idiomysis tsurnamali. Cassiopea abundance and size as well as association patterns with mysids differed between most of the surveyed habitats. In summary, the findings of the present study (1) characterize Cassiopea as one of the key organisms in investigated benthic habitats, (2) indicate active habitat selection by the jellyfish and (3) may hint to an unexplored life cycle of Cassiopea with central role of seagrass meadows providing cues for larval settlement and metamorphosis in the absence of mangroves.  相似文献

Abstract Fragmented habitats are a common occurrence in many marine systems, but remain poorly studied in comparison to their terrestrial counterparts. Here, I show that crustaceans inhabiting fragmented Zostera seagrass meadows show a dramatic response (change in abundance) to patch edges, with 11 out of 12 tests showing greatest abundance at the boundary between sand and seagrass. These patterns occurred on a scale of 0.25–1 m around the patch edge. Changes in seagrass biomass are unlikely to explain this pattern, as seagrass biomass increased smoothly at the patch edge, and did not decline towards patch interiors. In contrast to crustaceans, only a few polychaete taxa responded to the patch edge (9 of 25 tests), and bivalves generally did not show a response (1 of 5 tests). These latter groups are predominantly infaunal, and their lack of response may be partly due to the presence of substantial quantities of seagrass root and rhizome material in the sand habitat, which was defined visually based on the lack of above‐ground seagrass components only.  相似文献

This study assesses the effects of commercial trawling on benthic fauna, by analysing differences in the population structure and diet of benthic organisms inhabiting fishing grounds. The study is focused on two epifaunal species collected from a fishing ground in the north-western Mediterranean, which included a portion of un-trawled seabed used as a reference of undisturbed community. The selected species were the flatfish Citharus linguatula, more abundant at the undisturbed site and previously characterised as a surface predator and vulnerable to trawling, and the starfish Astropecten irregularis, which dominated the epibenthic community and had been characterised as an opportunistic species with low vulnerability to trawling. Both species were selective feeders and ingested similar prey species at each of the two sites, although differences in the relative prey abundance found in the stomachs occurred between sites. A. irregularis at the fished site mainly ingested gastropods, whereas higher proportion of bivalves was ingested at the undisturbed site. C. linguatula diet mainly composed of crustaceans at both sites, but there was an increase in the ingestion of small fish at the fished site. Moreover, prey ingestion of these two species generally increased with fishing activity. Trawling appears to modify the diet of these two species in terms of relative abundance of ingested prey, nevertheless, increased opportunism due to trawling disturbance was not detected and the density of these predators over fishing grounds was more closely related to their vulnerability to trawling.  相似文献

The dietary compositions were determined for Acanthopagrus butcheri in four estuaries and a saline, coastal lake, which vary in the extent, if any, of their connection to the sea and amongst which, in spring and summer, their salinities ranged from 2 to 7‰ in an intermittently open estuary to >40‰ in a normally closed estuary. The dietary compositions of A. butcheri in each of the five water bodies were significantly different, which reflected differences in the abundance of different components of the biota in those systems. Biotic differences amongst water bodies thus accounted for the far larger contributions made to the volume of the stomach contents by the macroalgae Cladophora sp. in the Moore River Estuary on the lower west coast of Australia, by amphipods and decapods in the Swan River Estuary 85 km further south and by polychaetes in the landlocked Lake Clifton a further 85 km further south. The diet of A. butcheri in the Nornalup/Walpole Estuary on the south coast of Western Australia contained atypically large volumes of the seagrass Ruppia megacarpa and teleosts, whereas that in the normally closed Wellstead Estuary, 260 km to the east was characterised by large volumes of the macroalgae Chaetomorpha sp. and a tube‐dwelling amphipod. However, there is evidence that A. butcheri selects certain prey, when two or more of the typical prey of A. butcheri are present in the environment, and that it prefers to feed on or above the substratum, rather than within the substratum. The dietary composition of A. butcheri underwent pronounced ontogenetic changes in each water body, these being progressive in estuaries on the lower west coast and abrupt in those on the south coast. Within the upper Swan Estuary, the dietary composition changed in an upstream direction, reflecting changes in the relative abundance of certain benthic macroinvertebrate prey, but did not undergo conspicuous seasonal changes, which is consistent with the lack of any clear cut seasonal changes in the abundance of their major prey.  相似文献

This study describes the diet of the sandbar shark, Carcharhinus plumbeus, highlighting differences in diet within various regions of the Virginia (USA) nursery area, as well as ontogenetic changes in diet. Stomach samples were obtained in 2001 and 2002 from 232 sharks caught by gillnets or longlines. Historical data from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) Shark Ecology Program were also analyzed. Ontogenetic changes in diet were evident, with crustacean prey decreasing in frequency with increasing shark size, and elasmobranch prey importance increasing with increasing shark size. Whereas previous research in Chincoteague Bay, VA showed the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, was the dominant crustacean in sandbar shark diet, the mantis shrimp, Squilla empusa, dominated the crustacean portion of the diet in this study. Differences in diet of sharks were observed among locations within the study area. Small juveniles (≤80 cm precaudal length) in the lower Chesapeake Bay ate more fishes, whereas Eastern Shore juveniles ate more crustaceans. Crustacean prey items varied among locations along the Eastern Shore, with more portunid crabs consumed in waters near Wachapreague and more mantis shrimp consumed near Sand Shoal Inlet. Our study showed that Carcharhinus plumbeus is a generalist predator and is thus unlikely to strongly impact the population of any particular prey species, and in turn is not likely to be strongly affected by fluctuations in abundance of a single prey species.  相似文献

Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis was used to examine the food sources and trophic structure of 17 fish species and six groups of benthic macroinvertebrates in a seagrass meadow in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. The seagrass, their associated epiphytes, sediment organic matter (SOM) and particulate organic matter (POM) were identified to be the food sources, with δ13C values ranging from ?19.49 (POM) to ?9.66‰ (seagrass). The δ13C of the 23 fauna taxa were between ?18.57 (Arothron manilensis) and ?11.62‰ (Protoreaster sp.). For five of the six groups of benthic macroinvertebrates, seagrass and their epiphytes contributed more than 69.4%. For 14 of the 17 fish species, seagrass and their epiphytes are the main contributors. For 15 of the 17 fishes, the trophic levels inferred from SIA are lower than those from the previously reported diet composition analysis. These findings show that seagrass and their epiphytes are consumed by most of the fish and benthic macroinvertebrates, and are important for a large portion of the food web in seagrass meadows in the Coral Triangle area.  相似文献
