The first five variable microsatellite DNA loci for mangrove crab, Scylla paramanosain, were developed. Allelic variation and other characteristics at these loci were examined in this species captured at the Urado Bay, Japan. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 24 to 44. The expected heterozygosity across loci ranged from 0.900 to 0.999 and probability of identity (PI) ranged from 2.8 × 10?3 to 1.7 × 10?2. Therefore, these microsatellite markers could be useful for estimating effect of stock enhancement release and population genetic structure of mangrove crab.  相似文献

Invasive species can dramatically alter trophic interactions. Predation is the predominant trophic interaction generally considered to be responsible for ecological change after invasion. In contrast, how frequently competition from invasive species contributes to the decline of native species remains controversial. Here, we demonstrate how the trophic ecology of the remote atoll nation of Tokelau is changing due to competition between invasive ants (Anoplolepis gracilipes) and native terrestrial hermit crabs (Coenobita spp.) for carrion. A significant negative correlation was observed between A. gracilipes and hermit crab abundance. On islands with A. gracilipes, crabs were generally restricted to the periphery of invaded islands. Very few hermit crabs were found in central areas of these islands where A. gracilipes abundances were highest. Ant exclusion experiments demonstrated that changes in the abundance and distribution of hermit crabs on Tokelau are a result of competition. The ants did not kill the hermit crabs. Rather, when highly abundant, A. gracilipes attacked crabs by spraying acid and drove crabs away from carrion resources. Analysis of naturally occurring N and C isotopes suggests that the ants are effectively lowering the trophic level of crabs. According to δ15 N values, hermit crabs have a relatively high trophic level on islands where A. gracilipes have not invaded. In contrast, where these ants have invaded we observed a significant decrease in δ15 N for all crab species. This result concurs with our experiment in suggesting long-term exclusion from carrion resources, driving co-occurring crabs towards a more herbivorous diet. Changes in hermit crab abundance or distribution may have major ramifications for the stability of plant communities. Because A. gracilipes have invaded many tropical islands where the predominant scavengers are hermit crabs, we consider that their competitive effects are likely to be more prominent in structuring communities than predation. Distribution of catecholamine-containing neurons in the brain of two species of crustaceans—hermit crab Pagurus middendorffii and the king crab Paralithodes camtschaticus was studied by immunocytochemical methods using an antibody against tyrosine hydroxylase (TH). In both species of the studied crustaceans, morphologically different types of TH-immunoreactive neurons are detected in cell clusters in brain protocerebrum, deutocerebrum, and tritocerebrum. Similarities and differences in the topography, numbers, and morphology of TH-positive neurons in different brain structures in the hermit crab and king crab are discussed.  相似文献

We report the development of seven polymorphic microsatellite loci in muskellunge (Esox masquinongy) using an unenriched subgenomic library. Polymorphic loci exhibited 2–11 alleles with observed heterozygosities ranging from 0.190 to 0.917 (n = 24). All seven loci amplified by their respective primer pairs resulted in monomorphic products in northern pike (E. lucius) whereas three loci amplified monomorphic products in grass pickerel (E. americanus americanus); these results imply conservation of flanking sequence but loss of polymorphism between these closely related species. Only one of six microsatellite primers developed in a previous study in northern pike amplified polymorphic products in muskellunge.  相似文献

The intertidal hermit crab Clibanarius erythropus was collected at three sites on São Miguel (Azores) during low spring tides. Shells occupied were identified and measured. Crab sizes ranged from 1.78 to 13.67 mm (cephalothoracic shield length), with an average size of 4.40 ± 1.44 mm. Of the 19 different shells utilised, the most frequent were Littorina striata (23.8%), Nassarius incrassatus (22.5%) and Mitra sp. (22.0%). At Fenais da Luz, L. striata was most frequently occupied, while at Água de Alto it was N. incrassatus and, at Caloura, Mitra sp. shells were most frequently used. Shell selection appears to be determined by respective sizes of hermit crab and shell species. Small size-class crabs occupy more shell species than larger crabs. The smallest crab was found at Fenais da Luz occupying a small Bittium sp., whereas the largest crab was found at Caloura inhabiting Stramonita haemastoma.  相似文献

Recent declines in red king crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus) stocks in its native and introduced habitat have sparked interest in the development of aquaculture methods for this commercially important species. Little is known about the basic biology of this species and the factors controlling its growth rate. In this paper we present concentrations of circulating ecdysteroids (the hormones that control molting) in hemolymph of intermolt red king crabs in three coastal areas of the Barents Sea. Two molting hormones (20-hydroxyecdysone and ecdysone) were assayed. Mean levels of these ecdysteroids varied from 0.0 to 190.0 μg ml−1 and from 0.0 to 13.4 μg ml−1, respectively. These levels in general were higher in comparison with other decapod species. Concentrations of ecdysteroids were similar in male and female crabs and in injured (animals with at least one autotomized limb) and intact red king crabs. In contrast, the levels of circulating ecdysteroids were much higher in small (predominantly immature crabs) than in large adult animals because the latter have a lower molting probability (once per year) than smaller crabs (2–3 times per year). Our data can be used in further investigations of red king crab growth rates and their application to the development of aquaculture methods for this species.  相似文献

The mud crab Scylla paramamosain plays a significant role in fishery resources in China. In this study, we developed 18 polymorphic microsatellite markers in this important crab by 5′ anchored PCR technique. A total of 125 alleles were detected in a single population of 32 individuals of S. paramamosain. The number of alleles per locus ranged from five to nine, with the allele size ranging from 166 to 316 bp. The polymorphism information content (PIC), observed and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.39 to 0.88, from 0.33 to 0.92 and from 0.42 to 0.86, respectively. Three loci (Scypa13, Scypa14 and Scypa15) deviated significantly from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) after Bonferroni correction (P < 0.0028), and no linkage disequilibrium was found between loci pairs. These polymorphic microsatellite markers will be useful for the study of population genetic structure, construction of genetic linkage maps and mapping of economically quantitative trait loci (QTL) in S. paramamosain.  相似文献

Seven microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized from the red‐capped robin Petroica goodenovii, using nonradioactive polymerase chain reaction (PCR)‐based techniques to screen an enriched genomic library. Five loci showed no evidence of null alleles and were variable [mean heterozygosity (HE) = 0.440, mean number of alleles = 8]. Cross‐amplification using primers for microsatellites in Phylloscopus occipitalis and Emberiza schoeniclus yielded another two polymorphic loci. The combined set of five red‐capped robin and two cross‐amplified loci are suitable for paternity assignment (exclusion probability for seven unlinked loci = 0.9760).  相似文献

Oyster (Crassostrea plicatula) is widely distributed in coastal areas of China. We developed and evaluated simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers from expressed sequence tags (ESTs) of Crassostrea gigas and to amplify EST-SSR in C. plicatula. Characteristics of eight EST-SSR loci were investigated using 37 wild-type C. plicatula individuals. The number of alleles per locus ranged from four to six. The observed heterozygosity (H O) ranged from 0.1892 to 0.7027 (0.3919 on average) and the expected heterozygosity (H E) ranged from 0.6068 to 0.7656 (0.7039 on average) (P < 0.05). The average observed heterozygosity was much lower than the average expected heterozygosity. All loci except C15 departed from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (P < 0.05) significantly. Contribution of the eight EST-SSR primers presented here will provide necessary and powerful molecular tools for management and conservation studies on the species of oysters in the future.  相似文献

Ten microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized for Shortia rotundifolia, a relict temperate plant on the subtropical Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan. The number of alleles ranged from 2 to 21. The expected (H E) and observed (H O) heterozygosities were 0.027–0.877 and 0.027–0.622, respectively, from 74 individuals on Iriomotejima Island of Ryukyus. One locus exhibited significantly fewer heterozygotes than expected under Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium (< 0.05). We developed 11 polymorphic microsatellite primers from Canarium album, which is a famous Chinese fruit tree with diversified economy values. The observed and expected heterozygosities (H o and H e) ranged from 0.133 to 0.833 and 0.128 to 0.810, with averages of 0.607 and 0.629, respectively. Four loci were deviated from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium after Bonferroni correction (< 0.01), but no linkage disequilibrium was detected among any pair of loci after Bonferroni correction (< 0.05). Cross-species amplification in another important cultured species Canarium pimela showed that 10 of 11 primers were polymorphic, with number of alleles per locus ranging from 2 to 5. The primers will be useful to explore further studies about introgressive hybridization and conversation of wild genetic resources of these two species.  相似文献

Summary Field experiments were used to determine the effect of a common intertidal snail (Nerita funiculata) on the use of space for foraging by the hermit crab Clibanarius digueti. Removals of Nerita resulted in an increased density of foraging Clibanarius, while additions of the gastropod had the opposite effect. The observed negative effect of the gastropod on individual hermit crabs appears to be food-related. Field surveys, however, suggested that the hermit crab population is limited by shell number, rather than food. Because Nerita contributes to the shell resource, its effect on the hermit crab population is positive. Nerita, therefore, has a negative effect on the distribution of foraging hermit crabs, but a positive effect on their abundance. Such decouplings of distribution and abundance effects are rare.  相似文献

Shelter association between the hermit crab Sympagurus dimorphus and the zoanthid Epizoanthus paguricola in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. —Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 92 : 141–149. The available literature on zoanthid–hermit crab associations deals only with records of this phenomenon, providing no detailed information. We describe, for the first time, the shell‐like colonies of Epizoanthus paguricola associated with the hermit crab Sympagurus dimorphus from benthic samples taken in the Argentine Sea, between 85 and 131 m depth, and provide information about morphometric relationships between the hermits and the zoanthids. In total, 260 specimens (137 males and 123 females) of S. dimorphus were collected, 240 (92.3%) of which were living in symbiosis with E. paguricola. The remaining 20 (7.7%) were living inside gastropod shells. As the initial structure of the pseudoshell, 12 different gastropod species were found (all were almost totally covered with colonies of E. paguricola). The hermit crab lives in the spiral cavity inside the soft colony, which seemed to be slightly different depending on the initial gastropod. Aperture pseudoshell morphology did not seem to be related to the sex of the hermit crab host, although males showed larger apertures for a given colony size. This fact is probably related to a larger size of male’s cheliped (sexual dimorphic character) used like a gastropod operculum and that may serve as a template for the growing of the aperture pseudoshell edge. The number of epizoanthid polyps per colony increased in relation to the weight of the colony and to the size of the hermit crab. A process of selection of the initial shell was evident, because species of Naticidae were not the most common gastropods in this benthic community, but were those most used by hermit crabs (>60%). The puzzling association between hermit crab, shell and zoanthid presumably occurs during the hermit juvenile phase, when the crab occupies a small shell, and a zoanthid larva settles on it. Given the close relationship between S. dimorphus and E. paguricola found in this region, we support the idea that due to the low availability of adequate gastropod shells for hermit life cycle, this association allows the establishment and the continuity of the hermit crab population in the studied area.  相似文献

We describe 10 primers for amplification of microsatellite loci for the mangrove, Avicennia germinans. Eight loci were isolated from a DNA sample from the Pacific coast of Baja California, Mexico and two loci were isolated from a DNA sample from the Atlantic coast of Bermuda. Polymorphism was investigated in a population from the Mexican Pacific coast (n = 15) and in four samples scattered throughout the range of the species. Total number of alleles for the species ranged from two to 10. Observed heterozygosity in the Mexican Pacific coast population ranged from 0.27 to 0.60, with two loci having fixed alleles.  相似文献

We describe the development of 19 primers for amplification of microsatellite loci for tanoak, Lithocarpus densiflorus (Hook. & Arn.). A population from Soquel State Demonstration Forest, Santa Cruz County, California (n = 20), and eight individuals from four additional coastal populations and one interior (Sierra Nevada) population were used to investigate polymorphism. The total number of alleles per locus ranged from two to 10. Observed heterozygosity in the Soquel population ranged from 0.05 to 0.70, with two loci being fixed.  相似文献

The Anomura presents the greatest degree of morphological disparity in the decapod Crustacea, with body forms ranging from the symmetrical and asymmetrical hermit crabs to squat lobsters and king crabs. The phylogeny of the anomurans has been fraught with controversy. Recent debate has focused primarily on the phenomenon of carcinization, the evolution of crab-like form from a non-crab-like ancestor, focused chiefly on derivation of king crabs from asymmetrical hermit crabs--the "hermit to king" hypothesis. We show by phylogenetic analysis of five nuclear protein-coding gene sequences that hermit crabs have a single origin, but surprisingly, that almost all other major clades and body forms within the Anomura, are derived from within the hermit crabs. The crab-like form and squat lobster form have each evolved at least twice from separate symmetrical hermit crab ancestors. In each case, a carcinization trend can be posited via a transition series from the initial symmetrical long-tailed hermit crab form, through the intermediate squat lobster or asymmetrical hermit crab form, to the final crab-like form. Adaptation to dextral shell habitation evolved at least twice, once in an exclusively deep-water clade and once in the common ancestor of all other asymmetrical hermit crabs (from which king crabs are derived). These remarkable cases of parallelism suggest considerable phenotypic flexibility within the hermit crab ground plan, with a general tendency toward carcinization. Rather than having a separate origin from other major clades, hermit crabs have given rise to most other major anomuran body types.  相似文献
