Specimens of the Paradiplozoon homoion-complex were collected from ten species of cyprinid fish in the Czech Republic. A combined molecular and morphometric approach was performed to distinguish Paradiplozoon homoion and P. gracile. The second internal transcribed spacer (ITS2) of the ribosomal RNA genes was amplified and sequences were analysed. No variability in the analysed sequences was detected. Measurements of clamps and the central hooks obtained from specimens from different host species were compared. Great variability was found in the length and width of the third pair of clamps. No significant differences were detected in the measurements of the central hook sickle. A positive relationship was found between host size and each of the following measurements of the third pair clamps: length and width of the whole clamp; and length of the median plate of the third pair of clamps. The length of the median plate of the attachment clamps may be a useful character for species identification of diplozoids. Further molecular and morphometric studies are required to resolve this taxonomic problem and, henceforth, we suggest considering P. gracile as a species inquirenda.  相似文献

Apristurus brunneus, A. kampae, and Parmaturus xaniurus were caught by trawl and longline between Washington and southern California (48°N to 32°N latitude) from June 2001 through October 2004. In females, oviducal gland width increased with TL in all three species but remained within 4 to 6% of TL. Oocyte diameter increased with TL during reproductive development in all species, and continued to increase with size after reproductive maturity was reached. The weight-length relationships differed significantly among species but not between sexes of any species from the eastern North Pacific combined. Using logistic regression, it was determined that total length at 50% maturity (TL50) of A. brunneus males was 514 mm TL and all A. brunneus males were mature at 547 mm TL. Female A. brunneus reached TL50 at 501 mm TL and all female A. brunneus were mature at 581 mm TL. Apristurus kampae males and females reached TL50 at approximately 485 mm TL and 490 mm TL, respectively. Parmaturus xaniurus males reached TL50 at 444 mm TL and females at 501 mm TL. Gravid female A. brunneus were found in all months of the year, but gravid P. xaniurus were found primarily June through September. Adult A. kampae females were found only in July through November and there were gravid females in all these months. Based upon gonadosomatic indices, I G, these species may mate within a defined period of time (April through June); however, A. brunneus appear to reproduce throughout the year and P. xaniurus reproduce within a defined season (approximately July through September).  相似文献

This study combined morphological and morphometric information on egg clutches, egg capsules and paralarvae of two sympatric coastal octopuses from New Zealand waters, Octopus huttoni and Pinnoctopus cordiformis, to provide species-specific traits to identify their early life stages obtained from field surveys. Eggs of O. huttoni (2.5 mm length; 1 mm width) were entwined with one another forming strings that ranged from 11 to 25.8 mm in length. Eggs of P. cordiformis (6.4 mm length; 1.5 mm width) were significantly bigger than those of O. huttoni and were grouped in small clusters of about seven eggs. Paralarvae O. huttoni and P. cordiformis differed in hatching size (1.4 mm versus 3.1 mm mantle length), number of suckers per arm (four versus eight), number of lamellae per outer demibranch (five versus ten) and arrangements of chromatophores in the body surface (29 to 59 versus 91 to 179), respectively. The morphological traits described in hatchlings from the laboratory allowed comparisons with field-collected paralarvae, suggesting that such characters were reliable species-specific patterns to enable a consistent differentiation between the early life stages of these two sympatric species, even in the absence of the brooding female.  相似文献

Microcotyle omanae n. sp. (Monogenea: Microcotylidae) is described from the gills of Cheimerius nufar (Valenciennes) (Sparidae) from the Arabian Sea. The new species closely resembles Microcotyle arripis Sandars, 1945, M. helotes Sandars, 1944, M. caudata Goto, 1984 and M. sebastis Goto, 1984, which have also been found in the Indo-Pacific. Microcotyle omanae n. sp. differs from M. arripis, M. helotes and M. caudata by its greater number of testes, from M. arripis, M. helotes by its greater length of the genital atrium, length/width ratio of the genital atrium and length of the eggs, and from M. helotes also in greater width of the clamps, from M. caudata and M. sebastis in its greater number of clamps and additionally from M. sebastis by its smaller genital atrial spines and clamps and by the ratio between length and width of the genital atrium. Moreover, the mature specimens of the new species have greater average body length than all above mentioned species. Correlations between 15 morphometric characters and body length are analysed in the new species, and their significance for species differentiation is discussed.  相似文献

A new genus of Panorpidae, Megapanorpa gen. nov. , is erected for five new species, Megapanorpa grandis sp. nov. (type species), M. absens sp. nov. , M. gaokaii sp. nov. , M. jiangorum sp. nov. and M. wanghongjiani sp. nov. This genus is similar to Cerapanorpa Gao et al., 2016 in a single anal horn on the sixth tergum of male, but can be differentiated from the latter by the following characters: the seventh abdominal segment of male is constricted and stalk‐like at base, the subgenital plate of female with a pair of lateral plates, and the medigynium of female with a concealed axis. Keys to genera of Panorpidae and species of Megapanorpa gen. nov. are presented. The morphology and function of anal horns in different genera and species have been discussed.  相似文献

Prasiolales are characterized by high morphological plasticity. This problem in taxonomic delimitation of the species may be a result of environment heterogeneity. Habitat characteristics and morphological variation of P. mexicana and P. nevadensis, two species of freshwater leaf-like thallus green algae, were investigated in five sites in central México where the morphological traits of these species overlap. Comparisons were made between habitat characteristics among streams and transects with and without Prasiola samples. Although no consistent correlation was found between environmental variables and morphological traits, a significantly wider range of habitat characteristics of current velocity and irradiance and morphometric variation (lamina length, lamina diameter, cell length, surface of the thallus, thickness and number of layers) suggested that P. mexicana was more plastic than P. nevadensis in its physicochemical requirements. Our results suggest that small variation of microhabitat conditions in P. nevadensis (irradiance and current velocity) could explain its very restricted geographic range in streams in central Mexico.  相似文献

Pinus densata is distributed on the Tibetan Plateau, where it forms extensive forests at high elevations. Genetic studies have provided evidence that P. densata originated through hybridization between P. yunnanensis and P. tabuliformis. To clarify the relationships among these pines, and assess their reproductive fitness in their respective habitats, we conducted a comparative analysis of eight cone and seed morphometric traits and six reproductive traits in them. Among the eight morphometric traits examined, six appeared to be intermediate in P. densata between those of P. yunnanensis and P. tabuliformis. There were significant differences among the three pines in all of the morphometric traits, and P. densata showed greater variability in these traits than the other two pines. In contrast to the morphometric traits, the reproductive traits (including the proportions of filled and empty seeds, ovule abortion rate, seed efficiency, meiotic abnormalities during microsporogenesis and pollen viability) differed little among the three pines, indicating that they have similar overall rates of effective pollination and fertilization in their respective natural environments. Despite their location on the high plateau, natural populations of P. densata appeared to have normal levels of reproductive success, comparable to those of the two parental species in their natural habitats. This study provides empirical data characterizing the reproductive success and adaptation of a stabilized homoploid hybrid in a novel habitat that is ecologically and spatially inaccessible to its parental species. The genus Mustelus is the most species‐rich of the widespread family Triakidae whereby its taxonomy and systematics have been historically challenging. They represent a significant fraction of the shark catches of small‐scale fisheries in the Gulf of California. In order to provide information useful for their management and conservation, the morphological and genetic distinction of the four species found in the northern Gulf of California (M. albipinnis, M. californicus, M. henlei and M. lunulatus) were analyzed. Discriminant analysis of 10 morphometric variables placed each species in a distinct and significantly different region of multivariate morpho‐space. The variables contributing most to their distinction were inter‐nostril width, mouth length, upper and lower labial furrow length, and mouth width. Restriction fragment length polymorphisms (PCR‐RFLP) of the nuclear ITS2 ribosomal DNA (rDNA) confirmed that each species represents a genetically cohesive and independent evolutionary lineage. In spite of the difficulty in differentiating these Mustelus species, a few cephalic measurements are useful to separate them. A PCR‐RFLP assay (using RsaI and MspI on ITS2 rDNA amplicons) is also proposed for the molecular differentiation of these commercially harvested smooth‐hound sharks, constituting the first molecular marker available for their identification. These data provide morphological and genetic tools that can be used to improve their management and conservation.  相似文献

Eurytemora americana and Acartia tonsa are the two most important copepods from the Bahía Blanca estuary plankton. For this study, 30 females were selected from recently preserved samples. Prosome length (PL), width (PW) and height (PH), urosome length (UL) and width (UW) measured in each female and subsequently the following ratios PL/PW, PL/PH, PW/PH and PL/UL were determined. Individual volumes for E. americana and A. tonsa females were estimated following the morphometric method in order to obtain individual biomass values. Regression tests were conducted for both species between individual volume and prosome length or width as independent variables, fitting data to a power model. Regression lines were compared through covariance analysis and single pair comparisons in order to evaluate the temporal behavior of the relationships. PL/UL was the best ratio for separating one species from the other. Average individual volume and std. error estimated for E. americana and A. tonsa were 0.0749 (±0.0097) mm3 and 0.0399 (±0.0049) mm3, respectively. Strong differences between both copepods morphometric variable and rate values were observed. A size and volume decrease was detected associated with higher temperatures and less phytoplankton available for food. According to R 2 values of regression lines prosome width and prosome length were good volume predictors on different dates for E. americana, however, prosome width was the best predictor on the majority of dates for A. tonsa. Differences in slopes and mean variances found between regression lines demonstrated seasonal variability. General regression equations between volume and PL or PW for each species could be derived.  相似文献

Genetic analyses indicate that Pinus densata is a natural homoploid hybrid originating from Pinus tabuliformis and Pinus yunnanensis. Needle morphological and anatomical features show relative species stability and can be used to identify coniferous species. Comparative analyses of these needle characteristics and phenotypic differences between the artificial hybrids, P. densata, and parental species can be used to determine the genetic and phenotypic evolutionary consequences of natural hybridization. Twelve artificial hybrid families, the two parental species, and P. densata were seeded in a high‐altitude habitat in Linzhi, Tibet. The needles of artificial hybrids and the three pine species were collected, and 24 needle morphological and anatomical traits were analyzed. Based on these results, variations in 10 needle traits among artificial hybrid families and 22 traits among species and artificial hybrids were predicted and found to be under moderate genetic control. Nineteen needle traits in artificial hybrids were similar to those in P. densata and between the two parental species, P. tabuliformis and P. yunnanensis. The ratio of plants with three needle clusters in artificial hybrids was 22.92%, which was very similar to P. densata. The eight needle traits (needle length, the mean number of stomata in sections 2 mm in length of the convex and flat sides of the needle, mean stomatal density, mesophyll/vascular bundle area ratio, mesophyll/resin canal area ratio, mesophyll/(resin canals and vascular bundles) area ratio, vascular bundle/resin canal area ratio) relative to physiological adaptability were similar to the artificial hybrids and P. densata. The similar needle features between the artificial hybrids and P. densata could be used to verify the homoploid hybrid origin of P. densata and helps to better understand of the hybridization roles in adaptation and speciation in plants.  相似文献

Species diversity within the genus Osmundea in the Macaronesian region was explored by conducting a comprehensive sampling in the Azores, the Canary, and the Madeira archipelagos. Toward identification, all specimens were first observed alive to verify the absence of corps en cerise, a diagnostic character for the genus and morphometric data were measured (thallus length and width, first‐order branches length and width, branchlets length and width, cortical cell length and width in surface view, cortical cell length and width in transverse section). Specimens were sequenced for COI‐5P (39 specimens) and three species delimitation methods (Generalized Mixed Yule Coalescent, Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery method, and Poisson Tree Processes) were used to assess the threshold between infra‐ and interspecific relationships. Subsequently, one or several sequences of plastid‐encoded large subunit of RuBisCO (21 specimens) per delimited species were generated to assess the phylogenetic relationships among Macaronesian Osmundea. Moreover, for each delineated species, vegetative and reproductive anatomy was thoroughly documented and, when possible, specimens were either assigned to existing taxa or described as novel species. This integrative approach has provided data for (i) the presence of O. oederi, O. pinnatifida, and O. truncata in Macaronesia; (ii) the proposal of two novel species, O. prudhommevanreinei sp. nov. and O. silvae sp. nov.; and (iii) evidence of an additional species referred as “Osmundea sp.1,” which is a sister taxon of O. hybrida.  相似文献

Increased N deposition may change species composition in grassland communities by shifting them to P limitation. Interspecific differences in P uptake traits might be a crucial yet poorly understood factor in determining the N effects. To test the effects of increased N supply (relative to P), we conducted two greenhouse fertilization experiments with eight species from two functional groups (grasses, herbs), including those common in P and N limited grasslands. We investigated plant growth and P uptake from two P sources, orthophosphate and not‐readily available P (bound‐P), under different N supply levels. Furthermore, to test if the N effects on P uptake was due to N availability alone or altered N:P ratio, we examined several uptake traits (root‐surface phosphatase activity, specific root length (SRL), root mass ratio (RMR)) under varying N:P supply ratios. Only a few species (M. caerulea, A. capillaris, S. pratensis) could take up a similar amount of P from bound‐P to that from orthophosphate. These species had neither higher SRL, RMR, phosphatase activity per unit root (Paseroot), nor higher total phosphatase activity (Pasetot: Paseroot times root mass), but higher relative phosphatase activity (Paserel: Pasetot divided by biomass) than other species. The species common from P‐limited grasslands had high Paserel. P uptake from bound‐P was positively correlated with Pasetot for grasses. High N supply stimulated phosphatase activity but decreased RMR and SRL, resulting in no increase in P uptake from bound‐P. Paseroot was influenced by N:P supply ratio, rather than by only N or P level, whereas SRL and RMR was not dominantly influenced by N:P ratio. We conclude that increased N stimulates phosphatase activity via N:P stoichiometry effects, which potentially increases plant P uptake in a species‐specific way. N deposition, therefore, may alter plant community structure not only by enhancing productivity, but also by favouring species with traits that enable them to persist better under P limited conditions.  相似文献

Black‐eyed Locusta migratoria appeared in albino locusts as a result of crossing between a short‐winged strain originating from Tsushima Island, Japan, and an albino strain originating from Okinawa Island. The black eye trait was recessive to the white eye trait because the crosses between black‐ and white‐eyed albino locusts produced only individuals with white eyes in the F1 generation. In the F2 generation, black‐ and white‐eyed individuals appeared in a ratio of 1:3, indicating that the black eye trait was controlled by a simple Mendelian unit. The black eye trait showed no genetic association with other traits including wing morph, adult body dimensions and classical morphometric ratios such as hind femur length / head width and forewing length / hind femur length.  相似文献

Hierarchical cluster analysis based on female morphometric character means including body length, distance from vulva opening to anterior end, head width, odontostyle length, esophagus length, body width, tail length, and tail width were used to examine the morphometric relationships and create dendrograms for (i) 62 populations belonging to 9 Longidorus species from Arkansas, (ii) 137 published Longidorus species, and (iii) 137 published Longidorus species plus 86 populations of 16 Longidorus species from Arkansas and various other locations by using JMP 4.02 software (SAS Institute, Cary, NC). Cluster analysis dendograms visually illustrated the grouping and morphometric relationships of the species and populations. It provided a computerized statistical approach to assist by helping to identify and distinguish species, by indicating morphometric relationships among species, and by assisting with new species diagnosis. The preliminary species identification can be accomplished by running cluster analysis for unknown species together with the data matrix of known published Longidorus species.  相似文献

The Xiphinema americanum‐group constitutes a complex of about 55 species of polyphagous plant‐ectoparasitic nematodes with a worldwide distribution. This group of plant‐parasitic nematodes is one of the most difficult dagger nematode species complexes for diagnosis because the morphology is very conservative and morphometric characters often overlap. We conducted nematode surveys in cultivated and wild olives in southern Spain from 2012 to 2014, from which we identified 16 nematode populations of the X. americanum‐group, five of which were tentatively identified as belonging to three new species and are described herein as X iphinema plesiopachtaicum sp. nov., X iphinema vallense sp. nov. , and X iphinema astaregiense sp. nov. , and 11 populations belonging to nine known species: Xiphinema brevisicum, Xiphinema duriense, Xiphinema incertum, Xiphinema luci, Xiphinema madeirense, Xiphinema opisthohysterum, Xiphinema pachtaicum, Xiphinema parapachydermum, and Xiphinema rivesi. A phenetic study based on multivariate factor analyses was developed to compare some of these related species by using morphometric features. In the factor analysis the first four factors accounted for 73.1% of the total variance of the selected characters, identifying body length, body length/maximum body width (a), body length/pharyngeal length (b), body length/tail length (c), and tail length/body width at anus (c′) ratios, distance from anterior end to vulva as percentage of body length (V), stylet length, oral aperture‐guiding ring distance, and lip region width as key morphometric characters to differentiate a restricted set of species within the X. pachtaicum‐subgroup that includes X. plesiopachtaicum sp. nov. and X. vallense sp. nov. Multivariate analysis of variance using these specific characters allowed to differentiate species in the X. pachtaicum complex or groups of them using morphometric characters (body length, a, b, c, c′, V, stylet length, lip region width, oral aperture‐guiding ring distance, female tail length, and hyaline region length). Phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear ribosomal DNA genes [D2‐D3 expansion segments of large ribosomal subunit 28S, and internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1)] and the protein‐coding mitochondrial gene, cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (coxI) were congruent, showing two main clades separating most of the species of X. americanum‐subgroup ‘sensu stricto’ from the X. pachtaicum‐subgroup. Agreement between phylogenetic trees and some morphological characters (viz. total stylet length, vulva position, and a ratio) were tested by reconstruction of their histories on rRNA‐based trees using parsimony and Bayesian approaches. Thus, integrative taxonomy, based on a combination of multivariate morphological and molecular analyses constitutes a new insight into the identification of X. americanum‐group species. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

Abstract

The two typical Mediterranean pines of Greece (Pinus halepensis Mill. and P. brutia Ten.) show a distinct, natural geographical distribution. However, in sites where they grow in sympatry (mainly due to extended reforestations), their morphological discrimination is not always easy. In the present study, three new morphometric indicators are introduced (at decreasing rank of reliability): (a) seed coat mass fraction, expressed as a percentage of the total seed mass (SM) (overall mean values 27.9 ± 0.5 (n = 160), and 58.0 ± 0.3 (n = 320) from 18 and 16 populations of Aleppo and East Mediterranean pine, respectively), (b) mean SM (16.70 ± 0.26 mg, n = 651, and 42.79 ± 0.61 mg, n = 425 from 18 and 16 populations of each of the two species, respectively) and (c) cone length/width ratio (2.20 ± 0.01, n = 651, and 1.77 ± 0.01, n = 606 from the same 18 and 16 populations, respectively). These three parameters are easily calculated, and constitute a reliable tool for the discrimination of the two pine species on the basis of their reproductive units (cones and seeds), provided that a minimal number of randomly collected samples is used for each indicator: 20 seeds for the measurement of seed coat mass fraction, about 1000 seeds for the estimation of mean SM, and 20 cones for the calculation of the cone length/width ratio. The functional implications of these adaptive traits are discussed.  相似文献

Allopolyploids possess complete sets of genomes derived from different parental species and exhibit a range of variation in various traits. Reproductive traits may play a key role in the reproductive isolation between allopolyploids and their parental species, thus affecting the thriving of allopolyploids. However, empirical data, especially in natural habitats, comparing reproductive trait variation between allopolyploids and their parental species remain rare. Here, we documented the flowering phenology and floral morphology of the allopolyploid wild plant Cardamine flexuosa and its diploid parents C. amara and C. hirsuta in their native range in Switzerland. The flowering of C. flexuosa started at an intermediate time compared with those of the parents and the flowering period of C. flexuosa overlapped with those of the parents. Cardamine flexuosa resembled C. hirsuta in the size of flowers and petals and the length/width ratio of petals, while it resembled C. amara in the length/width ratio of flowers. These results provide empirical evidence of the trait-dependent variation of allopolyploid phenotypes in natural habitats at the local scale. They also suggest that the variation in some reproductive traits in C. flexuosa is associated with self-fertilization. Therefore, it is helpful to consider the mating system in furthering the understanding of the processes that may have shaped trait variation in polyploids in nature.
