The spatial and temporal fluctuations of water availability can be an obstacle for recruitment of many species in the restinga and might restrict seed germination and seedling growth in specific regeneration safe-sites. Clusia hilariana is one of the most dominant species of Restinga de Jurubatiba. This species has a high proportion of seedling establishment occurring inside the tanks of soil bromeliads underneath vegetation patches. Given the thin seed coats, the fast germination time and seed dispersal of C. hilariana during the dry season, we hypothesized that their major regeneration niche (the tanks of soil bromeliads) is related to susceptibility of seed germination and also seedling growth to low water availability. To test this hypothesis, seeds were germinated under decreasing water potentials using PEG 6000 solutions and seedlings were grown under varying water regimes. The percentage of seed germination progressively decreased at lower water potentials. After 38 days in ?1.0 MPa no seeds germinated. However, approximately 90% of seeds germinated when transferred to Ψ = 0 MPa. The relative growth rates of seedlings of C. hilariana did not differ between water treatments. Thus, the major regeneration niche of C. hilariana is not a consequence of a high sensitivity of seeds and seedlings to water shortage. Nonetheless, C. hilariana showed an array of seed and seedling traits that may help to overcome establishment constraints of the harsh environment of restingas.  相似文献

Mimusops laurifolia (Forssk.) Friis is the largest tree species in the Arabian Peninsula, and a characteristic species of the threatened southwest Arabian valley forest habitat. In order to understand the distribution and conservation status of M. laurifolia, this paper collates the historical records of M. laurifolia and compares them with recent survey data. This comparison highlights that the abundance of M. laurifolia has dramatically declined at sites that were previously considered important for this species. In Arabia, approximately 100 individuals of M. laurifolia remain at eleven localities. From their size, it is likely that many of these are extremely old trees, but there is currently little regeneration. The main threats to this species are the loss of valley forest habitat through overgrazing and road construction, overexploitation of M. laurifolia for wood as well as climate change. Based on these findings, we recommend that M. laurifolia should be classified as Endangered (EN) in the region on the IUCN red list. We recommend some basic conservation measures and identifies an urgent need for further research on the distribution, propagation and restoration of this species.  相似文献

In bromeliads, nothing is known about the associations fungi form with seeds and seedling roots. We investigated whether fungal associations occur in the seeds and seedling roots of two epiphytic Aechmea species, and we explored whether substrate and fungal associations contribute to seed germination, and seedling survival and performance after the first month of growth. We found a total of 21 genera and 77 species of endophytic fungi in the seeds and seedlings for both Aechmea species by Illumina MiSeq sequencing. The fungal associations in seeds were found in the majority of corresponding seedlings, suggesting that fungi are transmitted vertically. Substrate quality modulated the germination and growth of seedlings, and beneficial endophytic fungi were not particularly crucial for germination but contributed positively to survival and growth. Overall, this study provides the first evidence of an endophytic fungal community in both the seeds and seedlings of two epiphytic bromeliads species that subsequently benefit plant growth.  相似文献

For species relying on seeds for population regeneration, knowledge on seed germination behaviors in relation to environmental factors is critical in designing species recovery strategy. Dendrobium sinense is an orchid endemic to Hainan Island of China and listed as Endangered by the IUCN Redlist. It reproduces primarily via seeds in its natural habitat. However, how germination is impacted by major environmental factors is poorly known. This study aimed to examine germination success of D. sinense seeds using two approaches, i.e. in situ and ex situ, using host tree barks as germination media. The latter was intended to generate symbiotic seedlings in a simple and economic approach which could be used for reintroduction efforts. In addition, three factors of in situ symbiotic seed germination success, including different sowing time, location (distance from an adult plant), and host tree were investigated. Our results showed that seeds sown ex situ and in situ in July had the highest rates of germination. Seed germination was significantly higher ex situ using bark as medium than in situ. Seeds sown directly on Rhododendron moulmainense, the most common host tree, with naturally occurring conspecific orchids had the highest rate of germination. In contrast, ex situ seeds sown on the bark of Cyclobalanopsis blakeii, a non-host species, had the highest rate of seed germination. In situ a positive correlation was found between the seed germination rate and the distance of the seeds from the adult D. sinense. Based on these results, it is likely seedling recruitments are determined by host tree species, the presence of and the distance from an adult conspecific orchid, which imply the importance of the mycorrhizal fungi, which were not reported here. This study provided important information on the optimal environmental conditions for population augmentation and reintroduction, which can be used as part of the species recovery strategy.  相似文献

The population of Magnolia lanuginosa a rare tree species of northeastern India has declined drastically owing to habitat destruction, low natural regeneration and over harvesting for its multipurpose uses. The present study was carried out to understand the type of dormancy and analyse the effect of storage on viability and germination behaviour of M. lanuginosa under various physical and chemical treatments. Seeds subjected to physical treatments such as water (cold, hot, and boiling), acid (H2SO4) and manual scarification failed in breaking dormancy. Seeds treated with growth regulators (GA3) had a significant effect on germination. It reduced the germination time and the shortest T50 was observed in seeds treated with 2000 mg/l of GA3 (non-scarified seeds) and 1000 mg/l of GA3 (scarified seeds). The use of KNO3 did not have any significant effect in breaking dormancy. However, the use of KNO3 along with GA3, increased the germination percentage. Seeds cold stratified (CS) for 60 days at 5 °C was effective in breaking dormancy and resulted in 84.26% germination. This indicates the prevalence of Type-1 Non deep physiological dormancy in M. lanuginosa seeds that requires a crucial CS period for proper embryo growth and development. The seeds stored in moist sand at 5 °C remained viable even after 120 days with 48.88% viability. The study would be helpful in devising seed germination protocols for mass production and reintroduction of the species into the wild.  相似文献

Vegetation recovery on Mount Koma, Hokkaido, Japan, has been slow after the catastrophic eruption in 1929, due to undeveloped soil and limited plant colonization. Nowadays, the seedling establishment is supported mostly by a nurse plant, Salix reinii forming shrub patches, facilitates the plant colonization. Although the effects of shrub patches should differ with patch sizes, the size effects have not been examined well. To examine the size effects, seed-sowing experiments were conducted on two common pioneer herbaceous species, Miscanthus sinensis and Polygonum sachalinense, in the field. The seed germination and seedling survival were monitored by the seeds sown into S. reinii patches (0.97 m2–4.12 m2 in area) for 4 months during snow-free periods. Microenvironments altered by the patches were measured. Lab-experiments were performed to characterize the seed germination and seedling growth.Larger patches decreased light intensity and temperature more and increased litter and water content. The large patches promoted the seed germination of the two species. Interspecific interactions, examined by a seed mixture experiment, showed that the interaction increased the seed germination on M. sinensis and decreased that on P. sachalinense. On the lab-experiments at three temperatures (15, 20 and 25 °C), M. sinensis seeds germinated more at higher temperatures and obtained higher seedlings biomass. P. sachalinense germinated the seeds more at 20 °C and grew faster at lower temperatures. The total biomass of the two species was reduced by shade that intercepted 50% of light intensity. The seed germination and seedling growth of these two species became higher on litter with 2 cm in depth than on no litter. Soil water supported seed germination when the seeds of these two species were mixed while the water reduced the growth of P. sachalinense seedlings. Therefore, the dry soils were suitable for their growths. In all the treatments, P. sachalinense seedlings showed higher mortalities than M. sinensis. In conclusion, the large patches facilitated more to the colonization of pioneer plants via seed germination and growth. Large patches acted as a nursery supporting the natural regeneration in the disturbed area by improving litter accumulation, maintaining soil water, reducing strong light and/or protecting from heat.  相似文献

The identification of an ecological niche specific to the regeneration phase has mobilised significant attention. However, the importance of the regeneration niche concept remains unclear. Our main objective was to study the existence of such a regeneration niche for a leguminous shrub, Ulex europaeus. This study was carried out in southwest France in the context of water and nutrient stresses (mainly phosphorus limitation) due to the presence of nutrient-poor sandy soils. We analysed the regeneration of the species from the germination of seeds and emergence of new seedlings until the seedlings reached young shrub size. Our design included a P fertilisation treatment. We also investigated microsite characteristics (micro-topography and vegetation development) as they can interact with meteorological conditions and determine water availability for seeds and seedlings. We found that P availability controlled seedling growth and the time necessary to reach young shrub size. Water availability appeared to impact the species germination and seedlings survival. We also found that P and water availability depended on the interactions between microsite characteristics and climatic variations. Finally we found evidence that P and water availability are important ecological factors shaping the regeneration niche of the species, but we found weak evidence that any microsite would be appropriate for the regeneration of the species in the long term. Future studies regarding regeneration niches need to distinguish more clearly the ecological factors important for regeneration (the regeneration niche per se) and the physical world where the seedlings appear and develop (the regeneration habitat).  相似文献

Instances of flowering of bamboo species Dendrocalamus strictus are few and far between which are taken as opportunity by nurserymen to collect seeds for propagation. Germination of seeds is reported to be poor. Therefore, different seed priming treatments were applied to D. strictus seeds collected from Ranchi in order to obtain uniform and high germination. Under laboratory conditions, dehusking of seeds before sowing ensured cent percent germination. Seed priming with KNO3 1% solution resulted in 80.4% increase in germination followed by hydropriming by 16 h (73.1% increase). In field conditions, dehusked seeds gave 23.0% germination without any priming treatment. Priming treatment with KNO3 1% gave the highest rise in germination (39.1%) followed by hydropriming for 16 h (26.1%). Seeds with their seed coats intact could give germination of 9.5% when germinated without any treatment. A rise of 115.8% in germination was obtained by priming with KNO3 1% (final germination count 20.5%). The next best treatment was hydropriming for 16 h (final germination 18.5%, a rise of 94.7%). KNO3 1% also induced the earliest and the most rapid germination. When seedlings germinated in laboratory were transferred to soil, all seedlings from all treatments established successfully without any mortality whatsoever. Therefore, it is recommended that seeds should be primed for 8 h with 1% KNO3 and germinated in laboratory or in farm house under normal atmospheric condition before transplanting the seedlings to soil.  相似文献

A model was developed to assess how the seed rain and fire regime affect seed bank dynamics and seedling establishment of three native shrub species (Acanthostyles buniifolius, Baccharis pingraea and Baccharis dracunculifolia) with different regeneration strategies, in temperate South American savanna. Seed bank and seed rain were quantified for each species under different fire regimes, and their relative roles in regeneration were evaluated. All species had short-term persistent seed banks and high annual variability in seed production. A high proportion of seeds deposited in the seed rain produced seedlings after fire; few entered the soil seed bank. Fire killed a high proportion of the seeds in the soil seed bank. Seedlings derived from the seed rain had a higher probability of surviving for 2 years than seedlings emerging from the soil seed bank. In the absence of fire, establishment depended on germination both from the seed rain and the soil seed bank, whereas with annual fire, establishment was primarily dependent on germination of seeds arriving in the annual seed rain, regardless of species’ regeneration strategies. These results help to explain changes in the vegetation of South American temperate savannas as a result of changes in fire regime and grazing management during the last 50 years. By revealing the crucial roles of the soil seed bank and seed rain in regeneration, this study provides vital information for the development of appropriate management practices to control populations of shrub species with different regeneration strategies in South American temperate savannas.  相似文献

Trees of Central Amazonian white-water (várzea) forests are highly adapted to the annual inundations, which can last up to 7 months every year. Many trees synchronize fruit production to the period of highest water levels of the rivers, and hydrochory is especially common in species that colonize the low-lying flood-levels flooded for longer periods. The effect of the contact of diaspores with the river water is controversially discussed in literature. While many studies describe that flooding breaks the dormancy in seeds of many várzea tree species and is necessary for germination, other studies mention that seed buoyancy and/or submergence have negative effects on germination. Therefore, the present study was designed in order to test experimentally how seed buoyancy and seed submergence affect germination in four várzea tree species of the low-lying flood-levels. The tested species with buoyant seeds were Salix martiana and Pseudobombax munguba, those with submerged seeds Laetia corymbulosa and Vitex cymosa. 50 seeds from each species were (a) placed in water during a period of 15 days and afterwards moved to várzea substrate, thus simulating seed buoyancy and/or submergence in the natural environment, and (b) directly placed in várzea substrate, with four repetitions, respectively. Three species showed significantly higher percentages of germination in the flooded seeds than in the non-waterlogged seeds, while fruit-fibre involved seeds of P. munguba showed an opposite trend. In L. corymbulosa, germination initiated earlier in the submerged than in the control seeds, whereas there was no difference in the start of germination between waterlogged and non-waterlogged seeds of the other species. From buoyant seeds of P. munguba and S. martiana, seedlings with entirely formed cotyledons were developed while still in water. These seedlings were characterized by morphological differences in comparison to seedlings originating from non-waterlogged seeds and could not protrude the root into the soil (i.e. establish) when placed in the substrate. It is likely that the seed involving fruit-fibres contribute to long-distance dispersal in these species in the natural environment, and to stabilize seedlings when diaspores land on substrate. Concluding, contact with the river water did not disturb but on the contrary enhanced germination in the four studied species.  相似文献

We studied the influence of seed size on germination, seedling growth and seedling responses to light in Ligularia virgaurea, a clonal herb native to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. (1) Under unshaded conditions, large seeds had significantly (P < 0.001) higher rates of germination than did small seeds. Both large and small seeds showed significantly reduced levels of germination under shaded conditions. The magnitude of this effect was greater for small seeds than for large seed. (2) Seedlings from large seeds had significantly higher rates of biomass accumulation (g · day−1) than did seedlings from small seeds. The total biomass of seedlings from larger seeds is larger than that from smaller ones. And seedlings from large and small seeds also differed in biomass allocation. (3) Seedlings from small seeds have higher relative growth rates (RGR; g · g−1 · day−1) than do seedlings from large seeds under both shaded and unshaded conditions. In contrast, there was no significant difference in leaf area ratio (LAR), specific leaf area (SLA) or leaf weight ratio (LWR) between seedlings from small and large seeds. RGR, LAR, SLA and LWR were all significantly higher in seedlings grown under shaded conditions than under unshaded conditions.  相似文献

Significant stimulation of germination of tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv Odessa plum) with poor initial germination capacity was achieved by soaking their seeds during 6 h in suspensions of nine out of ten Lactobacillus plantarum strains tested. The increase in percentage of germination ranged from 15.1 to 7.6 %. Lengths of shoots, main and lateral roots and development of root hairs increased after inoculation of seeds with studied L. plantarum strains. The treatments of seeds with L. plantarum expanded shoot lengths by 16.4–18.2 %. Stimulation of main root lengths in the tested tomato seedlings varied from 10.5 to 31.4 %, and the stimulation of lateral roots from 28.6 to 32.2 %. Lactobacilli from different strains exert different effects on the seedlings: for instance, inoculation with certain strains resulted in the stimulation of the main root growth and the inoculation with another strain stimulated shoot growth or growth of the lateral roots. It is the first report about plant-stimulating activities of L. plantarum from different ecological niches (plant surfaces, surfaces of edible mushrooms, dairy products) in the absence of nutritional compounds.  相似文献

Seeds of eight clones of ulluco (Ullucus tuberosus) were collected in 1985–1986 in cultivation experiments in the Botanical Garden of the University of Turku, and their germination was studied in a greenhouse and a growth chamber. The number of tested seeds was 1177. The disinfected seeds were tested in 10 different treatments with different illumination rhythms, temperatures, duration of treatments, and media. Stratification, removal of the calyx and seed coat, and mechanical rupture of the seed coat were used in the treatments. The mean germination percentage was 2.04%, but only five seedlings were obtained. Germinated seeds were obtained in three of the treatments; they belonged to clones from Puno, Cusco, and Juliaca. The best result was obtained by treating the seeds with 0.1% gibberellic acid, but the best seedlings, from the Puno clone, developed in pure water. The shortest germination time was 60 d and the longest 650 d, even within the same clone. The best illumination for germination was 8 h light and 16 h dark, in temperatures of +20°C (day) and +6°C (night). The seeds were found to germinate even after a storage period of 18 mo. The seedlings varied in habit, in size of seedling leaves, and in colour of stem, which could be light green or reddish.  相似文献

Stylosanthes, a genus of tropical forage legume, is known to exhibit good persistence in saline soils, yet mechanisms for regulation of seed germination under salt stress are poorly understood. This study was carried out to evaluate the mode of action of salt stress on seed germination of Stylosanthes. 1-Aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) increased ethylene biosynthesis and germination of NaCl-inhibited seeds in a dose-dependent manner. Contents of ACC and germination of Stylosanthes humilis seeds increased following transfer from NaCl solution to deionised water, but not after transfer to l-α-(2-aminoethoxyvinyl)-glycine (AVG) solution, an inhibitor of ethylene biosynthesis. Ethylene biosynthesis was much larger in NaCl-treated seeds of Stylosanthes guianensis than in seeds of S. humilis and Stylosanthes capitata, a fact which was reflected in higher germination rates. S. guianensis seedlings also displayed higher growth and survival rates than S. humilis and S. capitata under salt stress. Moreover, smaller ACC levels, as well as reduced ethylene biosynthesis of S. capitata seeds were accompanied by lower germination under salt stress. In addition, S. capitata seedlings treated with NaCl solutions exhibited relatively lower growth and survival rates in comparison with S. humilis and S. guianensis. Thus, different abilities to synthesize ethylene by S. guianensis, S. humilis and S. capitata seeds explain the differences in tolerance to salt stress of the three species.  相似文献

Seed germination and seedling growth of Zostera marina L. were monitored in the Chesapeake Bay in 1979 and 1980. Harvested seeds were placed in small acrylic tubes at several sites representing the salinity range of Z. marina distribution. Seed germination was observed first in late September and continued through May, with peaks in the fall and spring. The majority of seeds that germinated (66%) did so between December and March when water temperatures ranged from 0–10°C. There was no correlation between sites (different salinity regimes) and frequency of germination rates, indicating that salinity was not a major factor in the germination process in this study. Additional information on seed germination was available for seeds collected in 1977 and 1980 and subsequently monitored for germination at only one site. These data were similar to germination frequency recorded in 1979–1980.Seedling growth was measured from individuals collected from an existing Zostera marina bed. Seedlings were collected from November through May, at which time we could no longer distinguish seedlings from existing vegetative stock. Growth was characterized by the increased length of the primary shoot, number of leaves per shoot and numbers of shoots per plant. Seedling growth was slow during the winter months (water temperature ? 10°C) but rapidly increased in the spring (temperatures > 10°C). The size range of the harvested seedlings indicated that seed germination in the field probably occurred from October through April, corroborating evidence from the seed germination experiments.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal ground-surface dynamics are major factors that affect regeneration and species coexistence in tropical peat swamp forests. We studied the seedling survivorship and morphological features of two tree species that play important roles in maintaining the ground-surface dynamics of a peat swamp forest in Sumatra. Large Swintonia glauca trees form mounds, whereas large Stemonurus scorpioides trees occupy non-mounds. We monitored the demography of naturally dispersed Swintonia and Stemonurus seedlings that germinated in 2000. Survivorship of Swintonia seedlings was high under conditions of late germination, high-light environment, and elevated ground surface, and was negatively affected by distance to the nearest conspecific adult. Survivorship of Stemonurus was high under conditions of early germination and high conspecific seedling density, and was also negatively affected by distance to the nearest conspecific adult. The allometric features of Stemonurus seedlings indicated characteristics of stress tolerance, that is, low growth rate and thick, porous roots. Stemonurus, which has large wingless seeds, regenerated in non-mounds around the parental trees, while winged Swintonia seeds dispersed farther from the parent and established in patchily distributed gaps and mounds. Thus, Swintonia seedlings can survive on non-mound sites within gaps and possibly create mounds, while Stemonurus seedlings tend to maintain non-mounds around the parental trees.

Scatter hoarding of seeds by animals contributes significantly to forest-level processes, including plant recruitment and forest community composition. However, the potential positive and negative effects of caching on seed survival, germination success, and seedling survival have rarely been assessed through experimental studies. Here, I tested the hypothesis that seed burial mimicking caches made by scatter hoarding Central American agoutis (Dasyprocta punctate) enhances seed survival, germination, and growth by protecting seeds from seed predators and providing favorable microhabitats for germination. In a series of experiments, I used simulated agouti seed caches to assess how hoarding affects seed predation by ground-dwelling invertebrates and vertebrates for four plant species. I tracked germination and seedling growth of intact and beetle-infested seeds and, using exclosures, monitored the effects of mammals on seedling survival through time. All experiments were conducted over three years in a lowland wet forest in Costa Rica. The majority of hoarded palm seeds escaped predation by both invertebrates and vertebrates while exposed seeds suffered high levels of infestation and removal. Hoarding had no effect on infestation rates of D. panamensis, but burial negatively affected germination success by preventing endocarp dehiscence. Non-infested palm seeds had higher germination success and produced larger seedlings than infested seeds. Seedlings of A. alatum and I. deltoidea suffered high mortality by seed-eating mammals. Hoarding protected most seeds from predators and enhanced germination success (except for D. panamensis) and seedling growth, although mammals killed many seedlings of two plant species; all seedling deaths were due to seed removal from the plant base. Using experimental caches, this study shows that scatter hoarding is beneficial to most seeds and may positively affect plant propagation in tropical forests, although tradeoffs in seed survival do exist.  相似文献

Six perennial species endemic to South West Western Australia (Acacia trulliformis, Austrostipa geoffreyi, Banksia oligantha, B. mucronulata, Hakea tuberculata and Orthrosanthus muelleri) were screened for salt tolerance and recovery during seed germination. Growth and survival of 6-month old seedlings of these six plus a further vegetatively propagated species (Myoporum turbinatum) were subsequently examined in response to salt and waterlogging application. Water uptake under elevated saline conditions (200 and 400 mM NaCl) was slow, but not restrictive to germination. Moreover, a large proportion of seeds that were unable to germinate under saline conditions recovered after being transferred to non-saline conditions. Germination, growth and survival varied with species and the salt concentration used. Increasing salt concentrations tended to increase time to germination. Germination of Acacia trulliformis seeds declined exponentially with increasing salinity, and seedlings suffered reduced growth under saline and non-saline waterlogging. Austrostipa geoffreyi seeds were sensitive to saline treatments but seedlings were highly tolerant of both saline and/or waterlogged conditions. Germination of the three proteaceous species declined significantly under highly saline conditions (400 mM NaCl) with seedlings of the two Banksia species not surviving any treatment with the exception of non-saline waterlogging. Seedlings of H. tuberculata were more resilient to treatment conditions. Orthrosanthus muelleri was sensitive to salt stress during germination but was highly resistant to waterlogging, both saline and non-saline. This study provides an insight into the response and resilience of components of the vegetation understorey of saline-affected regions of Western Australia not usually evaluated allowing for more informed restoration.  相似文献
