Himalayan yellow raspberry, Rubus ellipticus is one of the world’s 100 worst invasive alien species. The plant has become a serious problematic weed in Hawaii, USA and is naturalized in many other countries. Screening of potential biological control agents is being conducted in its native region in Asia. In this paper, we report on the field distribution, abundance and host specificity of two leaf-rolling moth species, Epinotia ustulana and Epiblema tetragonana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae). In larval non-choice tests both species only developed on plants in the genus Rubus. However, in adult choice oviposition tests, both leaf rollers showed a strong preference for R. ellipticus over other species. Furthermore, leaf-rolls by these two insects were only found on R. ellipticus in the field. These results indicate the moths have a narrow host range. Our field surveys also showed that both moth species are widely distributed in Yunnan Province, southeastern China, with up to 115 leaf rolls per plant, suggesting high levels of damage. These findings indicate that the two insects have considerable potential for biological control of R. ellipticus, though further host range tests should be conducted using more native plant species in Hawaii.  相似文献

Peristenus digoneutis Loan and Peristenus stygicus Loan, parasitoids of the European tarnished plant bug Lygus rugulipennis Poppius, are established in the United States for biological control of native North American Lygus species, and are being considered for deliberate release in Canada. High lifetime fecundity of parasitoids is considered a desirable attribute of biological control agents and therefore, an understanding of parasitoid reproductive biology is required. In the present study, the potential lifetime fecundity of both agents was compared under laboratory conditions to estimate the potential impact of Peristenus species on Lygus. Synovigenic P. digoneutis and P. stygicus females oviposited most actively in the first two weeks of their lifetime, with a maximum average daily oviposition rate after five days. The maximum number of eggs laid per day was 83 eggs for P. stygicus, and 36 eggs for P. digoneutis. P. digoneutis has an average potential lifetime fecundity of 385 ± 35 SE eggs produced over 22 ± 3 SE days. In contrast, P. stygicus females have a 50% higher mean potential lifetime fecundity reaching 782 ± 65 SE eggs over 28 ± 1 SE days. A positive correlation between lifetime fecundity and body size was found only for P. stygicus, and both species showed a significant relationship between lifetime fecundity and oviposition period. The present study demonstrates that the fecundity of P. digoneutis and P. stygicus is considerably higher than previously reported. Based on these findings, P. stygicus appears to be the most effective biological control agent for Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois) when only fecundity is taken into consideration.  相似文献

Perennial plants, such as willows, miscanthus, and hybrid poplars, are promising bioenergy crops while lowering atmospheric CO2. Increases in the acreage of perennial bioenergy crops will pose new challenges and opportunities for biological control. In this review, we suggest that zoophytophagous bugs could be expected to become increasingly important in biological control of arthropod pests in perennial bioenergy crops. The main reasons are: (1) perennial bioenergy crops provide suitable habitats for arboreal natural enemies like zoophytophagous bugs; (2) zoophytophagous bugs often increase in response to low disturbance frequencies; and (3) plant-feeding by zoophytophagous bugs will not likely affect plant biomass production in perennial crops. We review aspects of the biology of zoophytophagous bugs expected to be important in biological control of pests in perennial systems. We also present a predator–prey model investigating how alternative harvest methods affect biological control of herbivorous pests by zoophytophagous bugs in willow biomass plantations. Although there is good evidence that zoophytophagous bugs can provide pest control, more research is needed about factors affecting the dispersal and population dynamics of zoophytophagous bugs in agricultural landscapes.  相似文献

Nesidiocoris tenuis (Hemiptera: Miridae) is used widely around the world as a biological control agent. In Kochi Prefecture, Japan, at the end of each greenhouse eggplant crop production period, the N. tenuis populations that have developed are collected and transferred to ‘natural-enemy-rearing greenhouses’ so that farmers can use the bug in the next production period. However, spider numbers have been increasing at the end of the production periods and it is becoming difficult to collect N. tenuis in some greenhouses. Therefore, we constructed specific primers for N. tenuis mtDNA to test whether the species was being preyed upon by the predominant spider species, Leucauge blanda. In polymerase chain reactions, these primers amplified a 148-bp fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene of N. tenuis but not of any of the 13 other arthropod species tested that occurred in eggplant greenhouses. In a laboratory experiment, the rates of detection of N. tenuis DNA in the spiders after the end of a period of feeding on the bug were 90% at 0?h, 60% at 24?h, and 0% at 72?h. In a greenhouse field experiment, the rate of detection of N. tenuis DNA in the spider was 95%. These results suggest that L. blanda is responsible for the observed suppression of N. tenuis populations in greenhouse eggplant crops.  相似文献

The following aspects ofHypoaspis miles' biology were investigated; development rate of egg to adult at different temperatures, fecundity, longevity and rate of predation on sciarids. With an increase in temperature the time taken for development decreased from 33.7 days at 15°C to 9.2 days at 28°C. The threshold temperature forH. miles to complete its life cycle was between 10° and 12°C. When fed onAcarus siro, H. miles laid 2–3 eggs a day and unfertilized eggs only developed into males. Adults ofH. miles (0–1 day old) survived for 24.0±1.4 days without food and if fed for 6 days and then starved, females lived for 65.4±2.6 days which was significantly longer than males (45.2±3.0 days). With food, 60% of males and females survived for 142 days. All larval instars of sciarids were attacked byH. miles although the numbers consumed were dependent on the size of the larvae. Egg predation was negligible and pupae were not attacked. In productivity studies ofH. miles in culture (fed onA. siro), the time taken for the mites to reach a density of 45–65,000/litre ranged from 76 to 23 days at 15° and 28°C respectively.

The literature pertaining to the distribution, habitat, specificity, life cycles and population biology of all the species of Eubothrium is reviewed. Records in which scolex morphology is used to identify species cannot be used as this character is too variable to be of value in specific recognition. Study of the valid records suggests that E. crassum comprises three races. There is a freshwater race, whose preferred host is non-migratory Salmo trutta fario, but which also infects parr, smolts and landlocked adult S. salar and parr of migratory S. trutta trutta. Its distribution is confined to Europe and Eurasia and is co-extensive with that of S. trutta: it does not occur in N. America or E. Asia. It may be carried to sea in migratory salmonids, where it dies out in S. salar but may survive in S. trutta. Its life cycle only takes place in fresh water, and requires a copepod as the only intermediate host. Other fish species may serve as paratenic or accidental hosts. The preferred host of the marine Atlantic race of E. crassum is S. salar, but S. trutta is also infected. Its distribution is co-extensive with that of S. salar on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. It may be carried into fresh water by both hosts, when its numbers decline in S. salar but not in S. trutta. The life cycle is unknown, but infection probably takes place in marine coastal waters. The preferred hosts of the marine Pacific race are all species of Oncorhynchus, with which its distribttion is co-extensive on both sides of the Pacific Ocean. It may also be carried into fresh water, and its life cycle is also unknown. E. salvelini comprises two races. The European freshwater race is specific to Salvelinus alpinus, and does not infect Salmo spp. Its life cycle takes place in fresh water and involves only one intermediate host, a copepod. It may be carried to sea in migratory fish, and survive to return to fresh water. The American race, found throughout North America and East Asia, infects species of Salmo, Salvelinus, Oncorhynchus, Cristivomer and other genera. Its biology is otherwise similar to that of the European race, although its return from the sea has not yet been confirmed in America. The other species of Eubothrium are more local in their distribution, some being endemic; do not comprise different races, and infect marine and anadromous fish. Nothing is known of their biology or life cycle. Eubothrium is recognised as being a marine genus that has invaded fresh water with anadromous fish. The inability to distinguish the races of E. crassum and E. salvelini on morphological characters, their low rate of survival in the other medium and their wide distribution renders them unsuitable as biological tags.  相似文献

Ovomermis sinensis (Nematoda: Mermithidae) is an entomophilic nematode and a potential biocontrol agent of lepidopteran pests, including Helicoverpa armigera. The sex ratio of a species can be used to regulate the size of the reproductive population. Parasitic load, parasitic period, host instar, and body size were examined to identify factors affecting the O. sinensis sex ratio. We tested the hypothesis that the O. sinensis sex ratio is correlated with host nutrient supply and the nutrients absorbed by the nematodes. The results show that the proportion of male O. sinensis increased with parasitic load but decreased with host instars and body size. Moreover, the parasitic period of males was significantly shorter than that of females. However, all the factors (host and nematodes) affecting the sex ratio were significantly modified by restricting the host diet, which increased the proportion of males. In turn, juveniles that absorbed fewer nutrients tended to develop into males. Taken together, our findings suggest that factors impacting the O. sinensis sex ratio are related to host nutrient status and provide parameters for mass rearing and a release strategy for this natural enemy.  相似文献

The fundamental host range of the arundo leafminer, Lasioptera donacis a candidate agent for the invasive weed, Arundo donax was evaluated. L. donacis collects and inserts spores of a saprophytic fungus, Arthrinium arundinis, during oviposition. Larvae feed and develop in the decomposing leaf sheath channel tissue. Thirty-six closely related and economic grass species along with several key habitat associates were evaluated in no-choice tests. L. donacis and its associated saprophyte completed development only on A. donax, in concurrence with published reports from its native range in Mediterranean Europe. The arundo leafminer feeding leads to premature defoliation, constituting a different mode of attack on the host plant as compared to two previously released insects, the arundo wasp and arundo scale, which feed on shoot tips and rhizomes, respectively. Defoliation of A. donax is expected to increase light penetration into stands of A. donax which increases visibility for law enforcement, reduces the survival of cattle fever ticks, and enhance recovery of the native riparian vegetation along the Rio Grande and other habitats where this weed is invasive.  相似文献

The parameters which govern infection of rubber-vine weed by the rustMaravalia cryptostegiae were investigated. The infection process, from appressorial formation to sporulation, is described and illustrated. Uredinioid teliospores have an optimum temperature range for germination at 22–27 °C, both in vitro and in vivo. However, germination on the rubber-vine leaf was more than double (81–92%) that in the absence of the host, and appressoria were formed only in vivo. An optimum temperature of 20–22°C and a dew period of 12 hours or more gave the highest level of infection as measured by sporulation density. The latent period from inoculation to pustule formation decreased with increasing temperature; the shortest period (8–11 days) being recorded at 25–27°C. At the lower temperatures (18°C), this was significantly extended (19–21 days). Four successive inoculations significantly reduced plant height and dry weight, although a compensatory growth flush occurred after the third inoculation. The addition of cryoprotectants had a negative affect on spore viability and subsequent infectivity. Cooling dry spores to –196°C at the rate of 10°C min–1 gave the best results, with high germination (93–65%) up to 8 days after thawing.  相似文献

The unprecedented success of biological control (biocontrol) agents led some of the proponents of this technology to promote its use as a panacea for all pest problems. Following an accumulation of non‐target host interactions, because of generalist or new association introductions, techniques to help ensure classical biocontrol agent's success and reduce non‐target interactions were implemented. Even with these new measures in place, public and scientific mistrust and lack of consistency has resulted in increased regulation of biocontrol introductions. This has likely decreased the probability of effective, sustainable control measures being expeditiously implemented. With the current apprehension concerning the safety of biocontrol, we should incorporate the processes (adaptation, selection, etc.) and theoretical concepts of evolutionary biology to predict and enhance the effectiveness of biocontrol. The microevolutionary perspective that involves mutation, drift, selection and gene flow may be a crucial consideration in the realm of biocontrol. Here, we discuss how and why spatial and evolutionary models should be implemented into future risk assessment analyses of potential biocontrol agents. We suggest that it is necessary to re‐assess the approach that has developed over the past approximately 100 years of sustained releases and illuminate them in the context of an evolutionary timescale.  相似文献

In classical weed biological control, assessing weed response to simulated herbivory is one option to assist in the prioritization of available agents and prediction of their potential efficacy. Previously reported simulated herbivory studies suggested that a specialist herbivore in the leaf-feeding guild is desirable as an effective biological control agent for cat's claw creeper Macfadyena unguis-cati (Bignoniaceae), an environmental weed that is currently a target for biological control. In this study, we tested (i) whether the results from glasshouse-based simulated herbivory can be used to prioritise potential biological control agents by evaluating the impact of a leaf-sucking tingid bug Carvalhotingis visenda (Drake & Hambleton) (Hemiptera: Tingidae) in quarantine; and (ii) the likely effectiveness of low- and high-densities of the leaf-sucking tingid after its release in the field. The results suggest that a single generation of C. visenda has the potential to reduce leaf chlorophyll content significantly, resulting in reduced plant height and leaf biomass. However, the impact of one generation of tingid herbivory on below-ground plant components, including the roots and tuber size and biomass, were not significant. These findings are consistent with results obtained from a simulated herbivory trial, highlighting the potential role of simulated herbivory studies in agent prioritisation.  相似文献

High numbers of tarnished plant bugs [Lygus lineolaris (Palisot)], were once common in alfalfa, as was a low level of parasitism (9%) by the native Peristenus pallipes (Curtis). After the bivoltine European parasite Peristenus digoneutis Loan became well established, average parasitism of the first and second generations increased to 64%, and tarnished plant bug numbers dropped by 65%. This reduced host density eventually caused a decline in total parasitism by both parasite species to 22%. A few P. digoneutis also attacked the alfalfa plant bug, Adelphocoris lineolatus (Goeze), but did not reduce this pest or increase its parasitism rate. At another location, where P. digoneutis is not established, parasitism of first generation alfalfa plant bugs, an adventive (accidently introduced) pest, was increased to 21% by the introduced univoltine parasite, Peristenus conradi Marsh, and a slight reduction in the pest may have resulted. P. digoneutis did not parasitize the meadow plant bug, Leptopterna dolabrata (L.), an adventive pest of forage grasses, so did not affect this mirid or its parasite. Neither introduced parasite eliminated the native parasites of the tarnished or alfalfa plant bugs. The narrow host ranges of the braconid parasites of mirid nymphs are contrasted with the broad host range of the native tachinid parasite [Phasia robertsoni (Towns.)] of adult mirids. The major changes in mirid abundance and their mortality by parasites that slowly occurred during this 19-year study demonstrate the need for long-term field research, to adequately document and understand these complex interactions.  相似文献

Visceral leishmaniasis is a zoonosis whose primary vector in Brazil is the sandfly Lutzomyia longipalpis Lutz & Neiva. Presently, efforts to control the vector have not been effective in reducing the prevalence of disease. A possible alternative to current strategies is the biological control of the vector using entomopathogenic fungi. This study evaluates the effects of the fungus, Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuilleman, in different developmental stages of L. longipalpis. Five concentrations of the fungus were utilized ranging from 104 to 108 conidia/ml, with appropriate controls. The unhatched eggs, larvae and dead adults exposed to B. bassiana were sown to reisolate the fungus. The fungus was subsequently identified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and DNA sequencing. Exposure to B. bassiana reduced the number of eggs that hatched by 59% (< 0.01). The longevity of infected adults was 5 days, significantly lower than that of the negative control which was 7 days (< 0.001). The longevity of the adult sandfly exposed to the positive chemical (pyrethroid, cypermetherin) control was less than 1 day. The effects of fungal infection on the hatching of eggs laid by infected females were also significant and dose-dependent (< 0.05). With respect to fungal post-infection growth parameters, only germination and sporulation were significantly higher than the fungi before infection (< 0.001). The identity of the reisolated fungus was confirmed by automated DNA sequencing post-passage in all insect stages. These data show that B. bassiana has good pathogenic potential, primarily on L. longipalpis larvae and adults. Consequently, the use of this fungus in sandfly control programs has potential in reducing the use of chemical insecticides, resulting in benefits to humans and the environment.  相似文献
