The oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) (Diptera: Tephritidae), is a pest of fruit and vegetable production that has become established in 42 countries in Africa after its first detection in 2003 in Kenya. It is likely that this rapid expansion is partly due to the reported strong capacity for flight by the pest. This study investigated the tethered flight performance of B. dorsalis over a range of constant temperatures in relation to sex and age. Tethered flight of unmated B. dorsalis aged 3, 10 and 21 days was recorded for 1 h using a computerized flight mill at temperatures of 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32 and 36 °C. Variations in fly morphology were observed as they aged. Body mass and wing loading increased with age, whereas wing length and wing area reduced as flies aged. Females had slightly larger wings than males but were not significantly heavier. The longest total distance flown by B. dorsalis in 1 h was 1559.58 m. Frequent short, fast flights were recorded at 12 and 36 °C, but long-distance flight was optimal between 20 and 24 °C. Young flies tended to have shorter flight bouts than older flies, which was associated with them flying shorter distances. Heavier flies with greater wing loading flew further than lighter flies. Flight distances recorded on flight mills approximated those recorded in the field, and tethered flight patterns suggest a need to factor temperature into the interpretation of trap captures.  相似文献

The efficacy of using natural enemies to control pests under field conditions largely depends on their mobility and, more specifically, on their capacity to quickly locate pest infestation. For many natural enemies, for example parasitoids, mobility is directly related to flight aptitude, which is determined by the capacity and inclination of a species to engage in flight. In this study, we determined the various factors that affected flight performance of Microplitis mediator (Haliday) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), using a computer-monitored flight mill. No differences were found in flight performance (i.e., flight distance, duration, speed) between both sexes of M. mediator, and flight capacity increased up to an age of 5–7 days followed by a gradual decline afterwards. For one-day-old female parasitoids, mean (±SE) flight distance and duration were 6.23 ± 0.88 km and 85.15 ± 14.44 min, respectively, with a maximum flight distance of 18.0 km. For male parasitoids, mean flight distance and duration were 5.27 ± 0.51 km and 85.74 ± 7.63 min, respectively. Mating status did not affect flight performance of males, while flight distance of four-day-old ovipositing M. mediator females was much lower than that of un-mated females of the same age. Un-mated adults flew most actively at 22–24°C and inclination to fly gradually declined with decreasing temperature. Temperatures above 26°C considerably reduced flight activity of M. mediator. Wasps engaged in normal flight under a broad range of relative humidity (RH) conditions, with an optimum RH range identified as 75–90%. Our research shows that M. mediator is a highly active parasitoid, because both sexes show great inclination to fly under a range of environmental conditions and flight capacity at different ages. Abstract Factors affecting the flight potential of Choristoneura conflictana, an insect that undergoes cyclical changes in population density, are investigated using computer‐linked flight mills. Female and male moths are flown for a 12‐h period and the longest single flight and total flight distance of each moth is recorded. After flight bioassays, moths are subjected to lipid extraction with a soxhlet apparatus to determine the effect of body lipid content on flight. Larger C. conflictana moths fly farther than smaller moths. Female C. conflictana fly farther than male moths but the effects of both mating status and moth age on the distance flown are dependent on sex. Mated females fly farther than virgins and older females fly farther than young females but these relationships do not occur in males. Body lipid content affects the distance flown by both females and males through a significant interaction with sex and age. The factors examined in this study will vary with density in natural populations and are predicted to be important indicators of flight potential and dispersal in this species.  相似文献

Flightin is a protein in flight muscles and is crucial for the flight capacity. Flightin also has been proposed as a protein with deep ancestry and functions outside of flight muscles. However, functional and molecular characterization of flightin achieved so far is mainly in flight muscles of Drosophila. Here, we cloned the flightin (Bd-flightin) gene and tested its expression and function in Bactrocera dorsalis, an important migratory pest. Phylogenetic analysis based on flightin orthologs revealed that the divergence of flightin is consistent with the taxonomic classification of insects. Motif analysis indicated obvious variations in flightin orthologs, which may have occurred during speciation and functional differentiation. The expression is quite low during egg and larval stages, which largely increased during pupal stage and then peaked at the beginning of the adult stage. Bd-flightin also showed tissue- and age-specific expression patterns during adult stage. The relative expression level is low in wing, head, ovary and testis, which is relatively higher in leg and abdominal wall and much higher in thorax. Injection of late pupae and newly eclosed adults with 1 μg flightin dsRNA per insect both significantly reduced the expression of flightin and the flight capacity in males and females. In addition, silencing the expression of flightin also decreased the weight ratio of thorax and whole-body. These results suggested that flightin plays important roles in flight muscle development and flight function in B. dorsalis, which can potentially be used to control the flight behaviour of the fruit fly.  相似文献

The oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis Hendel (Diptera: Tephritidae), is an invasive pest of orchards around the world, particularly in Asian countries such as China. Light traps offer a potential means for pest monitoring and management. This study aimed to evaluate the sensitivity of the fly to light and investigate the impact of monochromatic light in the sensitivity spectrum on B. dorsalis. Six light wavelengths in LEDs – green (522 nm), yellow (596 nm), blue (450 nm), red (633 nm), purple (440 nm), and white (compound light) – were adapted to test responses of 5‐, 10‐, and 20‐day‐old B. dorsalis adults kept in laboratory conditions. We also tested the effects of green and red lights on pupal development and adults’ life activities. The results indicated a phototaxis preference rank in B. dorsalis adults to monochromatic LEDs with, in decreasing order, green, yellow, purple, blue, and red. Moreover, positive phototaxis significantly increased with age. Male adults are more sensitive than female adults to test lights, mainly at the age of 10 and 20 days. Emergence rates of pupae exposed to 12 and 24 h green light daily were 42 and 67%, respectively, whereas controls held in red light emerged at 33 and 37%, respectively. Furthermore, body weight, female fecundity, and mortality of B. dorsalis in night‐time exposure of green light (from 21:00 to 09:00 hours; during daytime flies were illuminated by white LED light) were significantly higher than in red‐light test groups and dark controls. In conclusion, B. dorsalis displayed preference toward green light, and fly age and gender seemed to significantly impact the phototactic behavior. Green LED light exposure during nighttime remarkably improved the emergence rates of B. dorsalis, and it enhanced growth, development, and ovipositing peak period, but decreased adult lifespan. This research lays a foundation for the development of new trap models, e.g., with green sticky cards or green light, for monitoring and control of B. dorsalis in the field.  相似文献

Both juvenile hormone (JH) II and JH I have been identified in whole body extracts of the atlas moth, Attacus atlas. In 0–24 hr old adult males, levels of JH II were ∼ 15 ng/g while JH I titers were much lower (∼0.4 ng/g). In keeping with titer data obtained from other Saturniid moths, male animals contained substantially more JH than adult females, which contained <0.1 ng/g of predominantly JH II. Our results are in contrast to a prior study which did not detect any of the known JHs and hinted at the possible existence of a new JH active principle. The levels of JH I plus II we detected in A. atlas can easily account for the amount of biological activity observed in the prior study. Hence, we are confident that JH II and JH I constitute the only JHs of adult A. atlas.  相似文献

Although, in many insects, migration imposes a cost in terms of timing or amount of reproduction, in the migratory grasshopper Melanoplus sanguinipes performance of long-duration flight to voluntary cessation or exhaustion accelerates the onset of first reproduction and enhances reproductive success over the entire lifetime of the insect. Since juvenile hormone (JH) is involved in the control of reproduction in most species, we examined JH titer after long flight using a chiral selective radioimmunoassay. JH levels increased on days 5 and 8 in animals flown to exhaustion on day 4 but not in 1-h or non-flier controls. No difference was seen in the diel pattern of JH titer, but hemolymph samples were taken between 5 and 7 h after lights on. Treatment of grasshoppers with JH-III mimicked the effect of long-duration flight in the induction of early reproduction. The increased JH titer induced by performance of long-duration flight is thus at least one component of flight-enhanced reproduction. To test the possibility that post-flight JH titer increases are caused by adipokinetic hormone (AKH) released during long flights, a series of injections of physiological doses of Lom-AKH I were given to unflown animals to simulate AKH release during long flight. This treatment had no effect on JH titers. Thus, although AKH is released during flight and controls lipid mobilization, it is not the factor responsible for increased JH titers after long-duration flight.  相似文献

1. The movement of organisms can be driven by multiple factors and has implications for fitness and the spatial distribution of populations. Insects spend a large proportion of their adult lives foraging by flying for resources; however, their capability and motivation to move can vary across individuals. 2. The aims of this study were to examine interindividual and sex differences in flight performance and flight characteristics, using a flight mill bioassay, in Megarhyssa nortoni (Hymenoptera; Ichneumonidae), a parasitoid of the invasive woodwasp Sirex noctilio (Hymenoptera: Siricidae), one of the most important pests of pine afforestation worldwide. We also assessed the influence of morphological traits in combination with sex on flight and explored the cost of flight on longevity and mass loss. 3. The results show a difference between sexes in flight characteristics and performance. Females show greater total distance flown than males, and have a better capacity to undergo sustained flight. Sexual size dimorphism was also found and it was noted that size positively affects distances travelled. Females have a longer life span than males, yet no differences were noted in longevity within sex between individuals that did not fly and those that flew. Age did not influence flight performance of females or impacted on post‐flight longevity. Females lost less body mass than males even after flying longer distances. 4. These results suggest that sex‐specific behaviours probably govern flight abilities together with (and not only because of) morphological traits. The paper discusses sex‐specific life‐history strategies in parasitoids and their implications for biocontrol programmes.  相似文献

Certain tephritid fruit flies, such as the oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis, the Chinese citrus fly, B. minax and the Japanese orange fly, B. tsuneonis (Diptera: Tephritidae: Dacinae), are destructive citrus pests in China. A two-year trapping study was conducted in pomelo, Citrus maxima, groves in Fujian Province of China. The objectives of this study were to investigate the species, the abundance of tephritid fruit flies in the orchards, as well as the efficacy of the selected lure traps to these flies. Four lure traps or devices, i.e. methyl eugenol + Steiner trap (ST), cuelure + ST, ammonium acetate + putrescine + ST, and sticky spheres, were deployed from June to November 2017 and April to October 2018. Six economically significant Dacini pests were trapped during the period. These flies are B. dorsalis, the melon fruit fly, Zeugodacus cucurbitae, the pumpkin fruit fly, Z. tau, the Malaysian fruit fly, B. latifrons, and other two species - B. rubigina and Z. scutellatus. B. dorsalis was the most abundant, accounting for more than 50% of the capture, followed by Z. cucurbitae. The remaining four species accounted for less than 2% of the total capture. B. minax and B. tsuneonis, two destructive citrus-damaging tephritid fruit flies in China, were not found during the trapping period. Methyl eugenol trapped the highest number of fruit flies, followed by cuelure.  相似文献

Juvenile hormone (JH), JH acid, and ecdysteroid titer, and JH esterase activity, were measured in hemolymph from synchronous last stadium larvae of Manduca sexta. JH and JH acids were identified and quantified by GC-MS: JH I and II (and the corresponding acids) were the predominant JH homologs detected in males or females. Maximum levels of JHs and JH acids were observed just following ecdysis to the fifth (last) stadium (day 0, 0 hr) and at the prepupal stage (day 6–day 7). JH titer (≥ 1 ng JH I or II/ml) was higher than JH acid titer (∼0.7 ng JH I acid or JH II acid/ml) in very early fifth stadium larvae. However, this was reversed at the prepupal stage when higher titers of JH acids than JH were observed. JH acid titer began to rise prior to JH titer at the prepupal stage. JH esterase activity rose significantly only after JH or JH acid titers had begun to decline; maximum JH esterase activity was observed at day 3 and day 8. Ecdysteroid titer (measured by RIA) decreased during the last larval molt to a low level by day 0 (0 hr) and to undetectable levels at day 0 (12 hr) of the fifth stadium, by which time JH and JH acid levels had also declined substantially. Just prior to wandering, a small ecdysteroid peak was noted and a slightly elevated level of ecdysteroid was maintained for a further 2 days before a surge in ecdysteroid titer occurred at the prepupal stage, in synchrony with JH and JH acid titer maxima. There was no sexual dimorphism in timing or magnitude of JH, JH acid, and ecdysteroid titer or JH esterase activity.  相似文献

Males of Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) are strongly attracted to methyl eugenol (ME), which occurs in over 450 plant species. Given this powerful attraction, ME is commonly used in surveillance and eradication programs against this invasive agricultural pest. Preliminary observations revealed that B. dorsalis males visited ME-bearing flowers of the fruit fly orchid (FFO) Bulbophyllum cheiri subsp. cheiri even when these occurred near traps baited with far greater quantities of ME. Based on this evidence, we undertook field experiments to assess the attraction of feral B. dorsalis males to FFO flowers relative to commercial sources of ME. At the edge of a secondary forest, an FFO flower was placed midway between two ME sources located 20 m apart, and attracted flies were collected over an entire day. When the ME sources were unenclosed (not in traps), the relative attractiveness of FFO flowers to B. dorsalis males varied with the amount of ME placed nearby. The FFO flower (i) attracted a similar proportion of males when 1 g ME was placed at the flanking sites but (ii) captured significantly smaller proportions when the nearby sites had 6 or 10 g commercial ME sources. Similar tests with the commercial sources enclosed in traps showed that (i) 6 g ME sources in Steiner traps attracted significantly more B. dorsalis males than FFO flowers but (ii) 10 g sources in Clear traps (1 L buckets with 4 entrance holes) did not outperform the FFO flowers, presumably owing to limited dispersion of volatiles from the trap. Implications of these results for surveillance programs are discussed.  相似文献

Flight is essential for foraging, mate searching and dispersal in many insects, but flight metabolism in ectotherms is strongly constrained by temperature. Thermal conditions vary greatly in natural populations and may hence restrict fitness-related activities. Working on the Glanville fritillary butterfly (Melitaea cinxia), we studied the effects of temperature experienced during the first 2 days of adult life on flight metabolism, genetic associations between flight metabolic rate and variation in candidate metabolic genes, and genotype–temperature interactions. The maximal flight performance was reduced by 17% by 2 days of low ambient temperature (15 °C) prior to the flight trial, mimicking conditions that butterflies commonly encounter in nature. A SNP in phosphoglucose isomerase (Pgi) had a significant association on flight metabolic rate in males and a SNP in triosephosphate isomerase (Tpi) was significantly associated with flight metabolic rate in females. In the Pgi SNP, AC heterozygotes had higher flight metabolic rate than AA homozygotes following low preceding temperature, but the trend was reversed following high preceding temperature, consistent with previous results on genotype–temperature interaction for this SNP. We suggest that these results on 2-day old butterflies reflect thermal effect on the maturation of flight muscles. These results highlight the consequences of variation in thermal conditions on the time scale of days, and they contribute to a better understanding of the complex dynamics of flight metabolism and flight-related activities under conditions that are relevant for natural populations living under variable thermal conditions.  相似文献

Hemolymph of Danaus plexippus (monarch butterfly) was analyzed for juvenile hormone titer by gas liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in the selected ion monitoring mode. Laboratory reared, reproductively active, adult males and females contained JH I, II and III. JH II predominated with titers ranging from 2.3 to 11 ng/ml hemolymph. Titers of JH I and JH III were approx. 1 order of magnitude lower than those of JH II. JH I, II and III acids were also detected, but at levels generally lower than the corresponding JHs. JH titers in field collected reproductively inactive, gregarious adult monarchs, were 1–2 orders of magnitude lower than those of laboratory reared reproductively active monarchs. Studies related to the flight behavior of the bean bug, Riptortus clavatus, an insect pest of soybean, provide information, which can aid the development of management tactics. R. clavatus flight activities were determined using the tethered flight technique in the laboratory and a field study. We compared the flight parameters (flight distance, duration, speed and frequency) of laboratory-reared mated or unmated females and males of different adult age groups, and field-collected females and males from different seasons in a year. Mating effect was only significant for flight frequency, which was higher for unmated adults. Only the flight frequency was different between females and males. Among age groups, 25 d old individuals were shown to have higher flight parameters while the 35 or 45 d old groups showed the lower flight. Among the season, flight activities decreased as the season progressed. The flight distance of R. clavatus in a day was estimated to be 1.6–5.1 km with an average speed of 0.8 m/s from the laboratory data. However, from the field study, it was shown that bean bugs flew a 45–54 m distance with a flight speed of 3.0–3.6 m/s for the first single flight. The second flight was much shorter and slower. We discuss the possible difference of flight parameters between the laboratory and field studies with features of flight mill, variable field conditions and host plant finding behaviors. Further study on flight behavior may provide a better understanding of R. clavatus biology which may guide proper management.  相似文献

The Hemipteran predator, Cyrtorhinus lividipennis, feeds on the eggs and nymphs of rice planthoppers and leafhoppers. We previously demonstrated that sublethal concentrations of imidacloprid stimulated the reproduction of C. lividipennis. Considering the essential roles of juvenile hormone (JH) in insect reproduction, we speculated that sublethal concentrations of imidacloprid may stimulate the reproduction of C. lividipennis by regulating JH level. To test this, we cloned C. lividipennis JH acid methyl transferase (ClJHAMT) and JH esterase (ClJHE), which are responsible for JH biosynthesis and degradation genes, respectively. We then knocked down ClJHAMT by injecting dsRNA into C. lividipennis nymphs and found that emerging female adults exhibited 88.8% lower expression of the vitellogenin gene (ClVg) and the number of eggs was reduced by 41.5% as compared with controls. Silencing ClJHE increased ClVg mRNA expression by 275.0% but did not affect fecundity. A sublethal concentration of imidacloprid (LC20) increased the JH titer in females by 35.3% and 60.6% at 24 and 48 h post-emergence, respectively. In treatments containing both imidacloprid and dsJHAMT, the silencing of CLJHAMT reduced the number of eggs produced by adult females by 21.4% as compared to the control (imidacloprid + dsGFP). Our results indicated that sublethal concentration of imidacloprid may induce C. lividipennis reproduction by upregulating JH level via JHAMT. The finding could provide valuable information for improved integration of C. lividipennis and insecticides in pest management.  相似文献

食品安全已成为当今社会广受关注的问题。尽管国内的一些学者就阿里山潜蝇茧蜂[Fopius arisanus(Sonan)]和橘小实蝇SIT技术分别开展了不同程度的研究,然而关于应用该蜂和不育雄虫对橘小实蝇[Bactrocera dorsalis(Hendel)]进行田间联合防治的研究还未见相关报道。为此,为探讨天敌昆虫和雄性不育技术对橘小实蝇的田间综合治理(IPM)技术,开展了阿里山潜蝇茧蜂和橘小实蝇不育雄虫的田间释放试验:首先应用性引诱剂降低田间野生雄虫数量;而后,释放橘小实蝇不育雄虫,进一步降低田间橘小实蝇种群数量;最后,释放阿里山潜蝇茧蜂对田间残余的橘小实蝇卵进行追踪寄生,以达到持续控制的目的。通过监测整个防控期田间橘小实蝇的种群数量以及果实受害率和防治效果作为评价指标评价该防治方法的综合防治效果。结果表明:应用阿里山潜蝇茧蜂、橘小实蝇不育雄虫并配合引诱剂的综合措施对橘小实蝇的种群数量有明显控制作用,田间总体防治效果可达90%左右。此外,提出完善橘小实蝇田间防控措施的建议,并提出该研究的不足以及有待进一步开展研究的方向。  相似文献

Parasitoids that oviposit in a concealed host inside a plant part need to be able to find both the plant and the host. Egg parasitoids of fruit‐infesting Tephritidae need to assess the oviposition site based both on the host egg and the infested fruit. Infestation by Tephritidae fruit flies threatens fruit and vegetable production. Management methods have been implemented including biological control, using Fopius arisanus Sonan (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). The parasitism by F. arisanus in three Tephritidae flies in vegetable fruits was investigated. Laboratory assays were conducted to assess the parasitoid's preference and survival. Zucchini, sweet pepper, and tomato were artificially infested with eggs of Bactrocera dorsalis Hendel, Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann, and Ceratitis cosyra Walker (all Diptera: Tephritidae), then exposed to mated naïve F. arisanus females in a 20:1 egg:parasitoid ratio. Parasitoid behavioral activities (resting, antennating, probing, ovipositing) were observed on the infested fruits. Parasitism rate was determined by dissection of fruit fly eggs under a stereomicroscope. Behavioral activities of F. arisanus differed between all the fruits when infested with B. dorsalis or C. cosyra eggs but differed only between some of the fruits when infested with C. capitata. Fopius arisanus preferred B. dorsalis over C. capitata and C. cosyra, with a parasitism rate 2× higher on B. dorsalis compared to the Ceratitis species. Preference for fruits was dependent on the infesting fruit fly. The emergence of F. arisanus was higher with B. dorsalis than with Ceratitis spp. Although B. dorsalis completed its development earlier than Ceratitis spp., host fly species did not affect the developmental time of F. arisanus. We discuss the significance of F. arisanus preference in relation to naturally occurring Tephritidae infestations. We also discuss whether some fruits might constitute a refuge for Tephritidae flies and whether this will affect the current biological control efforts against B. dorsalis.  相似文献

Juvenile hormone (JH) influences many aspects of insect biology, including oogenesis‐flight syndrome tradeoffs between migration and reproduction. Drawing on studies of many migratory insects, we posed the hypothesis that JH influences migratory capacity and oogenesis in the rice leaf roller, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis. We treated adults moths (days 1, 2 and 3 postemergence) with the JH analog (JHA), methoprene, and then recorded the influences of JHA treatments on reproduction. JHA treatment on day 1 postemergence, but not on the other days, shortened the preoviposition period, although JHA did not influence total fecundity, oviposition period, or longevity. We infer day 1 postemergence is the JH‐sensitive stage to influence reproduction. Therefore, we treated moths on day 1 postemergence with JHA and recorded flight capacity, flight muscle mass, and triacylglycerol (TAG) accumulation. JHA treatments did not influence flight speed, but led to reductions in flight durations and flight distances. At day 3 posttreatment (PT), JHA‐treated females flew shorter times and less distance than the controls; JHA‐treated males, however, only flew shorter times than the controls. JHA treatments led to reductions in flight muscle mass in females at days 2–3 PT and reductions in TAG content in females at day 3 PT, but, these parameters were not influenced by JHA in males. These findings strongly support our hypothesis, from which we infer that JH is a major driver in C. medinalis oogenesis‐flight syndrome tradeoffs. Our data also reveal a JH‐sensitive stage in adulthood during which JH influences the oocyte‐flight syndrome in C. medinalis.  相似文献

Emergence, preening, and flight initiation were studied in laboratory-reared Trichogramma minutum Riley (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae). Male parasitoids emerged first and flew before females. When both sexes were present in flight cylinders, female parasitoids flew before males. Flight propensity in males was negatively related to the number of emerging females, while flight propensity in females was independent of the number of males present. Ambient temperature significantly affected the propensity and timing of flight; between 70–80% of the parasitoids flew at 25 and 30 °C while less than 4%, mostly males, flew at 20 °C. No flights were observed at 15 °C. The presence of fresh host eggs caused a reduction in the proportion of female parasitoids that flew and a delay in the time to flight for the females that did fly. The presence of food increased the flight propensity of female parasitoids, but did not affect the timing of flight. The relationship between flight behaviour and the efficiency of mass-reared Trichogramma is discussed in terms of its importance for inundative release programmes.  相似文献
