The demand for special breeding programmes for organic pig meat production is based on the assumption that pigs kept under organic conditions need different biological properties compared with conventionally kept pigs in order to achieve a good performance. This would mean that genotype-environment interactions exist. Therefore, 682 pigs of seven different genotypes were tested for growth performance and carcass quality under conventional and organic environments at two testing stations to verify genotype-environment interactions. All genotypes achieved significantly better results within the conventional environment and there were significant interactions between genotype and environment for all the criteria of growth performance and carcass quality. The interactions are mainly caused by varying differences between organic and conventional systems within genotypes, but for all traits, except weight gain, no major shift of the ranking order within environment between genotypes. Although statistically significant genotype-environment interactions exist, the modern genotypes selected under conventional conditions are also superior to indigenous breeds under organic conditions in economically important traits. Hence, it can be concluded from these results that no special breeding programme is necessary for organic production systems.  相似文献

The degree to which genetic variation in a given trait varies among different populations of the same species and across different environments has seldom been quantified in wild vertebrate species. We investigated the expression of genetic variability and maternal effects in three larval life-history traits of the amphibian Rana temporaria. In a factorial laboratory experiment, five widely separated populations (max. 1600 km) were subjected to two different environmental treatments. Animal model analyses revealed that all traits were heritable (h(2) approximately 0.20) in all populations and under most treatment combinations. Although the cross-food treatment genetic correlations were close to unity, heritabilities under a restricted food regime tended to be lower than those under an ad libitum food regime. Likewise, maternal effects (m(2) approximately 0.05) were detected in most traits, and they tended to be most pronounced under restricted food conditions. We detected several cross-temperature genetic and maternal effects correlations that were lower than unity, suggesting that genotype-environment interactions and maternal effect-environment interactions are a significant source of phenotypic variation. The results reinforce the perspective that although the expression of genetic and maternal effects may be relatively homogeneous across different populations of the same species, local variation in environmental conditions can lead to significant variation in phenotypic expression of quantitative traits through genotype-environment and maternal effect-environment interactions.  相似文献

We studied whether the differences between genetically different pollen donors (Betula pendula Roth clones) with respect to pollen-tube growth rate were consistent under different thermal conditions during pollen germination in vivo and in vitro. We conducted a single-donor hand-pollination experiment with same pollen donors and recipients in a plastic house seed orchard and at an outdoor clone collection. The prevailing daily mean temperature during pollen germination was 13°C higher in the plastic house than outdoors. The pollen-tube growth rate of each pollen donor was additionally determined in vitro on agar medium at five temperatures (10°, 15°, 22°, 30° and 35°C). A significant interaction between paternal clone and pollination site as well as between paternal clone and temperature was found, which provides evidence for genotype-environment interactions. Genotype-environment interactions can have evolutionary significance in maintaining the variation in pollen-tube growth rates. At seed orchards, genotype-environment interactions can cause deviations from the expected genetic composition of the seed crop depending on the prevailing environmental conditions during pollen-tube growth. Summary Genetic variation in resistance to 16 species of herbivorous insects was studied in 18 clones of Solidago altissima growing in an old field near Ithaca, New York, USA. Resistance to each insect, defined as the abundance of a species attacking a particular host genotype relative to other genotypes, was measured in both the natural stand and in two experimental gardens. The heritability of resistance was estimated by parent-offspring regression and sibcorrelation. The primary result was that clones differed in resistance to 15 of 16 insect species. The resistance of genotypes to these insect species remained relatively constant over the four years of the study. However, for only 10 of these resistances were the heritability estimates significantly different from zero. Thus the common assumption of plant-insect studies — that phenotypic variation in insect abundance is closely correlated with underlying genetic variation — is only conditionally true. There is heritable variation in resistance to many insects, but not all. The insects for which we observed heritable variation in plant resistance represent five different orders and several functional groups, including leaf chewers, phloem and xylem feeders, and gall formers. There was no apparent pattern between the degree of heritability of plant resistance and the destructiveness, feeding method, breadth of host range, or taxonomic group of the insects. The lack of marked heritable variation in resistance to some insects may be the result of (a) reduced variation caused by strong selection during prolonged or repeated insect outbreaks, and (b) genotype-environment interactions that obscure differences among genotypes.  相似文献

This study describes genotype-environment interactions in pollen competitive ability expressed as pollen-tube growth rate and seed-siring success in Betula pendula Roth. A factorial crossing design was applied using the same maternal and paternal clones in two different environmental conditions, in a B. pendula seed orchard established in a greenhouse and at an outdoor clone collection. Both single donor and two-donor pollinations were employed. Female inflorescences were collected after a fixed time of germination, pollen-tube lengths were measured for each cross, and paternity of the seeds sired by two-donor pollen mixtures was analyzed using isozyme markers. The pollination site had a significant influence on pollen-tube growth rate and seed-siring success. Significant interactions between pollination site and pollen donor indicated genotype-environment interactions in pollen-tube growth rate and seed-siring success. A highly significant positive correlation between pollen-tube growth rate and seed-siring success was found in the greenhouse but not at the outdoor clone collection. These results suggest that the pollen-tube growth rate can be a predictor of seed-siring success in controlled greenhouse conditions, where differences among maternal plants are mainly of genetic origin, but not in more heterogeneous outdoor conditions. In natural birch stands, environmental maternal effects probably diminish the significance of pollen competition for sexual selection in Betula pendula. At seed orchards, the effects of environmental conditions on pollen competitive ability can have important consequences for the genetic composition of the seed crop.  相似文献

Three clones of Folsomia candida from different locations in Europe were compared in four experiments investigating genetic and phenotypic correlations between life-history traits. The first three experiments focused on the effects of food type, clone and temperature on traits associated with the first clutch. Differences in clutch size between clones and treatments were almost completely attributable to body size. Clones differed in length of the juvenile period, but the difference decreased at low temperatures. Age and weight at first reproduction were negatively correlated in the food type experiment and positively correlated in the temperature experiment, an often-encountered result for which no general explanation is as yet available. In the temperature experiment egg size variation was considerable, and was highest at low temperatures. The fourth experiment, with two clones at two feeding levels, aimed at finding trade-offs, in particular between reproduction and survival. It was hypothesized that higher fecundity led to increased scenescence through a higher metabolic rate. The trade-off was clearly present among the clones: one combined fast growth, late reproduction and high lifetime fecundity with lower survival, while in the other the relation between these traits was opposite. The proposed mechanism, however, was not confirmed, as no difference in metabolic rate was found. The effect of food level was too small to result in significant differences in the life-history traits in either of the clones.  相似文献

Genetic diversity of six isozyme loci in cultivated barley of Tibet   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9  
Summary A random sample of 463 accessions of cultivated barley from the Tibet Hordeum germplasm collection was assayed electorphoretically for genetic diversity at six isozyme loci. Two loci (Acp-1 and Got-1) were found to be monomorphic and extensive variation was detected at the remaining four loci (Est-1, Est-2, Est-3 and Est-4). The allelic composition of Tibetan barley appeared to be distinct as compared to the results of previous studies of barleys from other parts of the world. Partitioning of genetic diversity showed that approximately 96% of the total variation was maintained at the within-subregion level and only about 4% was accounted for by differentiation among the eight subregions. Analysis of multilocus genotypes revealed non-random association of the alleles at the four loci, both in the entire sample and in all the subregions, although the four major multilocus genotypes did not show significant departure from the expectation based on complete random association. The possible causes for the establishment of these multilocus associations were discussed.  相似文献

Genetic variation for seedling and adult fitness components was measured under natural conditions to determine the relative importance of the seedling stage for lifetime fitness in Erigeron annuus. Variation in lifetime reproductive success can result from both the persistent effects of genetic variation expressed among seedlings and from variation in adult fitness components. Analysis of covariance was used to separate the stage specific from the cumulative effects of genetic variance expressed earlier in the life cycle. E. annuus produces seeds through apomixis, which allowed measurement of the fitness of replicate genotypes from germination through the entire life cycle. There were significant differences among genotypes for date of emergence, seedling size, survivorship and fecundity, but heritabilities were low, indicating slow response to selection. For all characters, environmental components of variance were one to two orders of magnitude larger than genetic variance components, resulting in broad sense heritabilities less than 0.1. For seedling size and fecundity, all of the genetic variance was in the form of genotype-environment interactions, often with large negative genetic correlations across environments. In contrast, genotypes differed in mean survivorship through one year, but there were no genotype-environment interactions for viability. Genetic differences in viability were primarily expressed as differences in overwinter survivorship. Genotype × environment interactions among sites and blocks were generated early in the life cycle while the genotype × environment interactions in response to competitive environment (open, annual cover, perennial cover) first appeared in adult fecundity. Genetic variation in lifetime fitness was not significant, despite a fourfold difference in mean fitness among genotypes.  相似文献

Summary Genetic variation in Phaseolus vulgaris L. (P. vulgaris) was investigated at the isozyme and DNA levels. We constructed a library of size-selected Pst I clones of P. vulgaris nuclear DNA. Clones from this library were used to examine 14 P. vulgaris accessions for restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs). DNAs from each accession were analyzed with three restriction enzymes and 18 single copy probes. The same accessions were also examined for variability at 16 isozyme loci. Accessions included four representatives of the T phaseolin group and five representatives each of the C and S phaseolin groups. One member of the S group (the breeding line XR-235-1-1) was derived from a cross between P. vulgaris and P. coccineus. Isozymes and RFLPs revealed very similar patterns of genetic variation. Little variation was observed among accessions with C and T phaseolin types or among those with the S phaseolin type. However, both isozyme and RFLP data grouped accessions with S phaseolin separately from those accessions with C or T phaseolin. The highest degree of polymorphism was observed between XR-235-1-1 and members of the C/T group. RFLP markers will supplement isozymes, increasing the number of polymorphic loci that can be analyzed in breeding, genetic, and evolutionary studies of Phaseolus.  相似文献

Genetic variation for fitness‐relevant traits may be maintained in natural populations by fitness differences that depend on environmental conditions. For herbivores, plant quality and variation in chemical plant defences can maintain genetic variation in performance. Apart from plant secondary compounds, symbiosis between plants and endosymbiotic fungi (endophytes) can produce herbivore‐toxic compounds. We show that there is significant variation among aphid genotypes in response to endophytes by comparing life‐history traits of 37 clones of the bird cherry‐oat aphid Rhopalosiphum padi feeding on endophyte‐free and endophyte‐infected tall fescue Lolium arundinaceum. Clonal variation for life‐history traits was large, and most clones performed better on endophyte‐free plants. However, the clones differed in the relative performance across the two environments, resulting in significant genotype × environment interactions for all reproductive traits. These findings suggest that natural variation in prevalence of endophyte infection can contribute to the maintenance of genetic diversity in aphid populations.  相似文献

Summary The extent of correlation was estimated between isozyme genotypes and the four widely segregating characters — leaf segment W/L ratio, stigma exsertion, fruit weight, and seed weight — in the first backcross of F1 Lycopersicon esculentum x Solanum pennellii to the former parent. The inbred parents differ in their alleles at the 12 tested isozymic loci, which are known to mark a minimum of eight of the twelve tomato chromosomes. Based on the isozyme data, a mean heterozygosity value, ¯H, was calculated which estimates the proportion of pennillii alleles in each individual. Correlations between mean heterozygosity and observed levels of each quantitative trait were highly significant and positive or negative as expected from the relative parental values. Plants with the lowest mean heterozygosity — i.e., closest to the esculentum zymotype also had mean values closest to those of this parent amongst the whole backcross population for each of the quantitative traits.Bivariate and multiple regression analysis was used to evaluate the ability of isozymes vs diagnostic morphological characters to estimate the portion of recurrent parent genes carried in each backcross individual. The results suggest that isozyme data gives better estimates than single diagnostic morphological characters and approach the level obtained by combinations of three morphological traits. Since electrophoretic determinations are made on small seedlings, selection at that stage can effect great savings of space and effort by greatly deminishing the size of the population needed at maturity. As such, isozyme selection would precede morphological selection but not replace it, thus the predictive value of these biochemical markers as well as diagnostic morphological characters could be obtained.  相似文献

A fundamental assumption of models for the maintenance of genetic variation by environmental heterogeneity is that selection favours different genotypes in different environments. Here, I use a method for measuring total fitness of chromosomal heterozygotes in Drosophila melanogaster to assess genotype-environment interaction for fitness across two ecologically relevant environments, medium with and without added ethanol. Two-third chromosomes are compared, one from a population selected for ethanol tolerance, and the other from a control population. The results show strong crossing of reaction norms for outbred, total fitness, with the chromosome from the ethanol-adapted population increasing fitness on ethanol-supplemented food, but decreasing fitness on regular food, relative to the chromosome from the control population. Although I did not map the fitness effects below the chromosome level, the method could be adapted for quantitative trait locus mapping, to determine whether a substantial proportion of fitness variation is contributed by loci at which different alleles are favoured in different environments.  相似文献

Allelic frequencies at the polymorphic enzyme loci IDH-1, IDH-2, LAP-1, and 6-PGDH-1 were determined in population samples ofAbies alba from 5 different areas in Austria. The results reveal clear genetic differentiation between the eastern and the western provenances. Gradual frequency clines are observed with all four loci. The amount of variation, measured as average heterozygosity and genotypic diversity, is significantly higher in the west. The multilocus genotypes proved to be useful markers for the identification of clones. Functional differences with respect to substrate specifity were found for the two allozymes coded by the coexisting alleles of the IDH-2 locus.  相似文献

Summary Life-history variation was examined among members of theDaphnia longispina group, which consists ofD. galeata, D. hyalina, D. cucullata, and hybrids. Factorial experiments were conducted at two temperatures (14° and 20° C) and two food concentrations (0.2 and 1.0 mg Cl−1). Differences in life-history features (size at maturity, age at first reproduction, size of first clutch, offspring size in first clutch) under the different environmental conditions were assessed among eightDaphnia clones, which represented members of this species complex. Significant differences between parentals and hybrids for most life-history features were observed under various treatments; generally, hybrid clones showed intermediate life-history traits when compared with parentals. When comparisons were made among clones within a given species (i.e.D. galeata, D. galeata xcucullata, D. cucullata), clonal differences were also noted for certain life-history traits. The data are discussed with reference to the formation and maintenance of hybrid species complexes in nature. Offspring from half-sib and full-sib families of the hard clam, Mercenaria mercenaria were reared in five locations along the Atlantic Coast to test for the presence of genotype-environment interaction for juvenile growth rate. Location effects upon growth rate variation were prevalent; of the genetic effects, the additive genetic by location variance was predominant with the nonadditive genetic by location component contributing to a lesser degree to the interaction variance. The additive and nonadditive variation over all environments was negligible. Genotype-environment interaction was found to be at least partially due to a change in the amount of genetic variation expressed at each location; with significant additive variation detected at Charleston and Georgetown, SC sites and significant nonadditive variation at Millsboro, DE. Genetic covariance/correlation analysis indicated that reversals in relative family performance across locations were prevalent, implying the possibility of habitat specialization among genotypes. In addition, graphical analysis produced no evidence of a ubiquitously superior genotype. These analyses suggest that genotype-environment interaction should act to constrain the evolution of juvenile growth rate in Mercenaria, preserve any heritable variation associated with this trait and may lead to the development of phenotypic plasticity for growth.  相似文献

To investigate temperature adaptation of cool-climate trees, we studied 14 cottonwood genotypes from riparian (streamside) zones in three ecoregions differing in elevation in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Canada. Black cottonwoods (Populus trichocarpa) were collected from the higher, cooler montane and intermediate (aspen) parkland, and narrowleaf cottonwoods (P. angustifolia) were collected from the lower, warmer fescue prairie. The genotypes were grown in growth chambers under three temperature regimes reflecting the ecoregion variation. Sapling growth (dry weight) varied significantly across temperatures and for the genotypes from within and particularly across the ecoregions. Significant temperature × genotype interactions further indicated differentiation of the temperature response. Growth of the montane clones increased by 209% between 15/10 and 20/15°C and was 37% lower at 25/20°C. In contrast, genotypes from the lower ecoregions grew more slowly at the cool and intermediate temperatures (59 and 58% of montane) and then demonstrated constant (−3% parkland) or slightly increased (+16% prairie) growth at 25/20°C. This suggests the existence of P. trichocarpa ecotypes, localized populations with different temperature responses. This differentiation may explain our previous observation of comparable growth across these ecoregions despite substantial temperature variation, and the existence of ecotypes would produce a range of responses to climate warming that should produce an upward shift of the mountain ecoregions.  相似文献

An in vitro germination method was used to study variation in pollen viability, that is pollen-tube growth rate together with germination percentage, among the Picea abies genotypes in a seed orchard. The method permits easy, rapid screening of large numbers of genotypes. Significant variation in pollen viability among the genotypes was evident, the differences among the pollen-lot means being 7–10–fold in different years. No correlation was found between the average pollen viability and the phenology, growth or growing-site characteristics of the pollen donors. However, there appeared to be pollen lots that either benefit from a higher germination temperature or else germinate faster at lower temperatures. The significant variation in pollen viability among the pollen donors indicates a potential for male gametophyte competition. This, together with the observed genotype-environment interactions in pollen performance, may contribute to the variable genetic composition of seed produced in the seed orchard. The life history traits of Daphnia magna were studied in laboratory experiments under freshwater and brackish (5 salinity) conditions. The variability of responses within and between populations was examined by comparing 11 clones from a brackish lake and 10 clones from a freshwater pond. Experimental clones were hatched from ephippia collected from the sediment and thus represent random samples of the clone banks of each population.Most clones with a high salinity tolerance were from the population of the brackish habitat, but some were also found in the freshwater population. Thus, freshwater populations appear to have the potential to invade brackish habitats. A proportion of clones from the brackish population had very low fitness (measured as er) under freshwater conditions. This unexpected result means that freshwater adaptation can be lost by the freshwater cladoceran Daphnia magna. The effects of unfavourable conditions on growth and reproduction varied among clones and were not correlated. This clonal variation in growth and reproduction indicates that the environmental sensitivities of these traits are independent. The pattern of fitness reaction norms showed no trade-off between fitness under brackish and under freshwater conditions for either population. Thus, euryhaline generalists should be favoured in habitats with salinity fluctuations between freshwater and brackish conditions.  相似文献

The identification of molecular markers linked to economically important traits for use in crop improvement is very important in long-lived perennial species. Three-hundred-and-sixty RAPD primers were used with bulked segregant analysis to identify markers linked to loci of specific interest in peach [(Prunus persica) L. Batch] and peach x almond [(Prunus dulcis) Batch] crosses. The traits analyzed included flesh color, adhesion, and texture; pollen fertility; plant stature; and three isozyme loci. The Mendelian behavior of the RAPD loci was established, and RAPD markers were mapped relative to the loci controlling flesh color, adhesion, and texture, and the isozyme loci Mdh-1, 6Pgd-2 and Aat-1, as well as the existing RFLP genetic linkage map constructed previously using a peach x almond F2 population. This technique has facilitated rapid identification of RAPD and RFLP markers that are linked to the traits under study. Loci controlling these traits mapped predominantly to linkage groups 2 and 3 of the peach genetic linkage map. Linkages to genes with both dominant and co-dominant alleles were identified, but linkages to dominant genes were more difficult to find. In several crosses, RAPD marker bands proved to be allelic. One co-dominant RAPD formed a heteroduplex band in heterozygous individuals and in mixtures of alternate homozygotes. The Mendelian behavior of the RAPD loci studied was established and the results suggest that RAPD markers will be useful for plant improvement in peach.  相似文献

Growth rate is an ecologically important trait, affecting the energy acquisition from, and provisioning to, the surrounding community. One of many costs suggested to counteract the evolution of increased intrinsic growth rate is an associated reduction in tolerance to conditions of nutrient stress. Here we test this concept with individuals possessing experimentally increased intrinsic growth rates (growth hormone transgenic coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch) relative to wild genotypes. Using a series of three experiments, survival and growth of both genotypes were assessed on a physiological and behavioral level while varying food abundance, social interactions, and predation risk. Only in complete absence of exogenous food in newly emerged fry did the high intrinsic growth rate appear costly with a shorter average survival time compared to wild-type (Exp. 1). In experiment 2, genotypes with elevated intrinsic growth showed equal or higher survival and growth than wild-type genotypes In a third experiment, adding very limited amounts of food and allowing for social interactions in a simulated natural environment benefited transgenic individuals relative to wild-types, but at similar magnitudes in both the absence and presence of predators. Populations with transgenic individuals present did not crash under these competitive conditions as previously reported when studied in simple environments where hiding and attack escape were not possible. Our data suggest that transgenic fish have a greater scope for growth under most conditions, but are not obligated to use this capability. Physiological (e.g. appetite and conversion efficiency) and behavioral traits (e.g. competitive ability and risk-taking) found previously to correlate positively with intrinsic growth rate in the transgenic strain likely aided in their survival and growth, even under food limited conditions. Hence, at least in coho salmon, intrinsic growth rate does not appear to strongly affect survival under nutrient stress.  相似文献
