Cultivars with low stomatal conductance (gs) may show high water use efficiency (WUE) under drought conditions, but under optimal conditions low gs may result in low vigour. A combination of thermal imaging and carbon isotope composition (δ13C) analysis offers potential for screening simultaneously for both high gs and high WUE. Ten cultivars of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) were grown in well watered or water limited conditions. Thermal images were taken of the plants, with various approaches to determine the optimal protocol for detecting variation in gs, including use of reference leaves, grids to maintain leaves horizontal, and collection of meteorological data in synchrony with thermal images. δ13C of leaves, fruit, and crowns was determined. An index of gs derived from the temperature of horizontal leaves and the temperature of wet and dry references showed significant differences between cultivars and between well watered and water limited plants, as did gs estimated from leaf temperature, the temperature of a dry reference, and humidity. Thermal imaging indicated low gs in ‘Elsanta’ and ‘Totem’ and relatively high gs in well watered ‘Elvira’, ‘Florence’ and ‘Cambridge Favourite’. δ13C of all plant material was higher in water limited than well watered plants and showed significant differences between cultivars. In one experiment leaf δ13C indicated lowest WUE in ‘Elvira’ and highest WUE in ‘Totem’. δ13C was inversely correlated with an index of gs derived from thermal imaging. Although the results indicate substantial variation in gs and WUE between cultivars, generally all cultivars responded to water deficit by lowering gs and hence increasing WUE.  相似文献

Background and aim

Significant differences in tree growth were observed in an exotic pine plantation under different harvest residue management regimes at ages 2–10 years. However, the variations in tree growth between residue management treatments could not be explained by soil and foliar nutrient analyses, except by potassium (K) concentration. Therefore, this study determined the carbon isotope composition (δ13C) and oxygen isotope composition (δ18O) of current and archived foliar samples from the exotic pine plantation to establish relationships with foliar K concentration and tree growth indices as a means to determine changes in stomatal conductance (gs) and photosynthetic rate (Amax) or water use efficiency (WUE), and therefore understand the variations in tree growth across treatments.

Methods

The harvest residue treatments were: (1) residue removal, RR0; (2) single level residue retention, RR1; and (3) double level residue retention, RR2. Foliar δ13C and δ18O were determined for samples at ages 2, 4, 6 and 10 years, and the atmospheric 13C discrimination (Δ13C), intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) and WUE were determined from the δ13C data. Litter needle δ13C and δ18O were also determined over 15 months between ages 9 and 10 years. These parameters or variables where correlated to each other as well as to the periodic mean annual increment of basal area (PAIB) and the periodic mean annual increment of tree diameter at breast height (PAID) across the treatments and over time. Foliar δ13C and δ18O were also related to published data of foliar K concentrations of the same trees.

Results

Significant variations of foliar δ13C, and therefore WUE and Δ13C, across treatments were only observed at ages 4 and 10 years old, and foliar δ18O at age 4 years old only. The results showed increasing foliar δ13C, δ18O and WUE, and decreasing Δ13C and Ci, from RR0 to RR2 treatments. However, while the WUE was positively related to the PAID and PAIB at age 4 years, it was negatively related to PAID and PAIB at age 10 years old. Litter needle δ13C, indicative of WUE, was also negatively related to the PAID at age 10 years old. . At age 4 years, foliar δ13C and δ18O were positively related with a steep slope of 7.70 ‰ across treatments, and that both isotopes were positively related to foliar K concentrations. Similarly, δ18O was negatively related to the Δ13C. No significant relationship can be determined between foliar δ13C, or Δ13C, and δ18O at age 10 years old. In addition, WUE was increasing (p?<?0.001) and Δ13C and Ci decreasing (p?<?0.001) with decreasing PAID over time.

Conclusions

The variations at age 4 years in foliar δ13C or Δ13C and δ18O and increasing WUE with increasing growth rate suggest growth induced water-stress with increasing residue-loading rate as a result of the nutritional effect of the harvest residues on tree growth. At age 10 years, the negative relationships between WUE and PAID indicate nutrient limitation has an over-riding effect on δ13C variations rather than gs. This was due to the lack of a significant relationship between foliar Δ13C and δ18O at this age, as well as over time.  相似文献

Ecologists and physiologists have documented extensive variation in water use efficiency (WUE) in Arabidopsis thaliana, as well as association of WUE with climatic variation. Here, we demonstrate correlations of whole-plant transpiration efficiency and carbon isotope composition (δ13C) among life history classes of A. thaliana. We also use a whole-plant cuvette to examine patterns of co-variation in component traits of WUE and δ13C. We find that stomatal conductance (g s) explains more variation in WUE than does A. Overall, there was a strong genetic correlation between A and g s, consistent with selection acting on the ratio of these traits. At a more detailed level, genetic variation in A was due to underlying variation in both maximal rate of carboxylation (V cmax) and maximum electron transport rate (Jmax). We also found strong effects of leaf anatomy, where lines with lower WUE had higher leaf water content (LWC) and specific leaf area (SLA), suggesting a role for mesophyll conductance (g m) in variation of WUE. We hypothesize that this is due to an effect through g m, and test this hypothesis using the abi4 mutant. We show that mutants of ABI4 have higher SLA, LWC, and g m than wild-type, consistent with variation in leaf anatomy causing variation in g m and δ13C. These functional data also add further support to the central, integrative role of ABI4 in simultaneously altering ABA sensitivity, sugar signaling, and CO2 assimilation. Together our results highlight the need for a more holistic approach in functional studies, both for more accurate annotation of gene function and to understand co-limitations to plant growth and productivity.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Calotropis procera and Calotropis gigantea, originally from warm parts of Africa and Asia, are now pan-tropical and in ecological terms considered an indicator of overgrazed, disturbed lands; they grow successfully in dry areas. Variations in water relations, morphology and photosynthesis of the two species growing in the same habitat were studied to assess possible mechanisms of tolerance to drought and how these relate to their ecophysiological success. Also the hypothesis that their photosynthetic rate (A) under drought would be affected by stomatal and non-stomatal limitations was tested.

Methods

Water relations, gas exchange, water use efficiency (WUE), fluorescence parameters, pubescence and specific leaf area (SLA) of Calotropis procera and C. gigantea plants growing in the field were evaluated during the wet (WS) and dry (DS) seasons.

Results

The xylem water potential (ψ) was similar in both species during the WS and DS; drought caused a 28 % decrease of ψ. In C. procera, A, stomatal conductance (gs) and carboxylation efficiency (CE) were higher in the WS with half the values of those during the DS, this species being more affected by drought than C. gigantea. A high δ13C of C. gigantea (–26·2 ‰) in the WS indicated a higher integrated WUE, in agreement with its lower gs. Leaves of C. gigantea were more pubescent than C. procera. Relative stomatal and non-stomatal limitation of A increased with drought in both species; no changes in maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (PSII; Fv/Fm) were observed. The decrease in the relative quantum yield of PSII (φPSII) and in the photochemical quenching coefficient (qP) was more pronounced in C. procera than in C. gigantea.

Conclusions

The photosynthetic capacity of C. procera was higher than that of C. gigantea. During the DS, A was regulated by stomatal and non-stomatal factors in a coordinated manner and drought did not cause chronic photoinhibition. A higher density of trichomes and leaf angle in C. gigantea may contribute to the maintenance of A and confer more efficient protection of photochemical activity in the DS. Ecophysiological traits such as high photosynthetic rate throughout the year even during the DS, and high WUE, highly pubescent leaves and low SLA observed in both species contribute to the establishment and growth of Calotropis in dry conditions.  相似文献

Water scarcity and nitrogen shortage are the main constraints on durum wheat productivity. This paper examines the combined effects of a constant water deficit and nitrogen supply (NS) on growth, photosynthesis, stomatal conductance (gs) and transpiration, instantaneous and time‐integrated water use efficiency (WUE) and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and carbon isotope discrimination (Δ13C) in durum wheat genotypes grown in pots under greenhouse conditions. Three water levels (40%, 70% and 100% container capacity), two nitrogen doses (high and low N) and four genotypes were assayed in a total of 24 experimental treatments. Water and nitrogen treatments were imposed 2 weeks after plant emergence. The growth, nitrogen content and Δ13C of the shoot and the gas exchange in the flag leaf were determined about 2 weeks after anthesis. As expected, both water and NS had a strong positive effect on growth. However, a reduction in water supply had low effect decreasing photosynthesis and transpiration, Δ13C and NUE and increasing WUE. On the contrary, increasing the level of nitrogen supplied had a significant negative effect on gs, which decreased significantly the ratio of intercellular to ambient CO2 concentrations and Δ13C, and increased both instantaneous and time‐integrated WUE. In addition, a higher N level also negatively affected the instantaneous and time‐integrated NUE. The Δ13C of shoots correlated significantly and negatively with either instantaneous or time‐integrated measurements of WUE. Moreover, within each NS, Δ13C also correlated negatively with the integrated NUE. We concluded that under our experimental conditions, Δ13C gives information about the efficiency with which not just water but also nitrogen are used by the plant. In addition, this study illustrates that a steady water limitation may strongly affect biomass without consistent changes in WUE. The lack of effect of the different water regimes on gas exchange, WUE and Δ13C illustrate the importance of how stress is imposed during growth.  相似文献

Water stress and nitrogen (N) availability are the two main factors limiting plant growth, and the two constrains can interact in intricate ways. Moreover, atmospheric N depositions are altering the availability of these limiting factors in many terrestrial ecosystems. Here, we studied the combined effects of different soil water availability and N supply on photosynthesis and water-use efficiency (WUE) in Picea asperata seedlings cultured in pots, using gas exchange, and stable carbon and nitrogen isotope composition (δ 13C and δ 15N). Photosynthesis under light saturation (A sat) and stomatal conductance (g s) of P. asperata decreased as the soil moisture gradually diminished. Under severe water-stress condition, N addition decreased the A sat and g s, whereas the positive effects were observed in moderate water-stress and well-watered conditions. The effect of N addition on the intrinsic WUE (WUEi) deduced from gas exchange was associated with soil water availability, whereas long-term WUE evaluated by leaf δ 13C only affected by soil water availability, and it would be elevated with soil moisture gradually diminished. Water deficit would restrict the uptake and further transport of N to the aboveground parts of P. asperata, and then increasing δ 15N. Therefore, δ 15N in plant tissues may reflect changes in N allocation within plants. These results indicate that the effect of N enrichment on photosynthesis in P. asperata is largely, if not entirely, dependent on the severity of water stress, and P. asperata would be more sensitive to increasing N enrichment under low soil water availability than under high soil moisture.  相似文献

Background and aims

Acacia senegal, a leguminous dryland tree, is economically and ecologically important to sub-Saharan Africa. Water-use efficiency (WUE) and biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) are fundamental to plant productivity and survival. We quantify provenance differences in WUE, BNF, photosynthesis, biomass and gum arabic production from A. senegal assessing genetic improvement potential.

Methods

Using stable isotope ratios, we determined WUE (δ13C) and BNF (δ15N) from provenances of mature A. senegal in field-trials (Senegal), sampling leaves at the beginning (wet) and end (dry) of the rainy season. Seedling provenance trials (UK) determined photosynthesis, and biomass and δ13C in relation to water table. Environmental data were characterised for all provenances at their sites of origin.

Results

Provenances differed in both δ13C and δ15N. Gum yield declined with increasing WUE. Virtually no BNF was detected during the dry season and seedlings and mature trees may have different WUE strategies. Wind speed and soil characteristics at provenance origin were correlated with isotope composition and gum production.

Conclusion

Provenance differences suggest that selection for desirable traits, e.g., increased gum production, may be possible. As ecological strategies relate to native locality, the environmental conditions at plantation site and provenance origin are important in assessing selection criteria.  相似文献

A new gene for adult plant leaf rust resistance in wheat was mapped to chromosome 3BL. This gene was designated as Lr77.

Abstract

‘Santa Fe’ is a hard red winter cultivar that has had long-lasting resistance to the leaf rust fungus, Puccinia triticina. The objective of this study was to determine the chromosome location of the adult plant leaf rust resistance in Santa Fe wheat. A partial backcross line of ‘Thatcher’ (Tc) wheat with adult plant leaf rust resistance derived from Santa Fe was crossed with Thatcher to develop a Thatcher//Tc*2/Santa Fe F6 recombinant inbred line (RIL) population. The RIL population and parental lines were evaluated for segregation of leaf rust resistance in three field plot tests and in an adult plant greenhouse test. A genetic map of the RIL population was constructed using 90,000 single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers with the Illumina Infinium iSelect 90K wheat bead array. A significant quantitative trait locus for reduction of leaf rust severity in all four tests was found on chromosome 3BL that segregated as a single adult plant resistance gene. The RILs with the allele from the resistant parent for SNP marker IWB10344 had lower leaf rust severity and a moderately resistant to moderately susceptible response compared to the susceptible RILs and Thatcher. The gene derived from Santa Fe on chromosome 3BL was designated as Lr77. Kompetitive allele-specific polymerase chain reaction assay markers linked to Lr77 on 3BL should be useful for selection of wheat germplasm with this gene.

The genotype ‘Neva’ under high plant density showed the highest biomass yield and optimal physiological strategies and could be the most suitable choice under semi-arid environment

Abstract

The poplars (Populus spp.) are the most sensitive plants to water deficit conditions among the woody species utilized for biomass production for energetic purposes; their productivity is associated with water availability in the soil. In the Mediterranean environment, crops are mainly limited by evapotranspirative demand that is not balanced by rainfall supply. As new hybrids with high growth rates and resistance to water stress are selected, the use of poplar as an energy crop may increase in Southern regions of Mediterranean Europe. The growth dynamics and physiological characteristics of poplar hybrid genotypes have been monitored for 2 years at a site with a Mediterranean climate, Apulia region, that could be used for energy crops. Unrooted cuttings of three recently selected genotypes of poplar (‘Neva’, ‘Dvina’ and ‘Lena’) and two “traditional” genotypes (‘Luisa Avanzo’ and ‘Bellini’) were planted in the spring of 2010 at two different densities: (a) low plant density = 1,667 cuttings ha?1 (LPD); (b) high plant density = 6,667 cuttings ha?1 (HPD). The genotypes ‘Lena’ and ‘Dvina’ showed the lowest survival rates and the poorest growth among the hybrid poplar tested. The genotype ‘Bellini’ had low stomatal sensitivity to soil water content and a moderate productive performance. The genotypes ‘Luisa Avanzo’ and ‘Neva’ had a good degree of rooting and sprouting, high values of leaf relative water content (RWCl) and low values of stomatal conductance (g s) during the summer months. In “Neva”, these characteristics were associated with the best yields (4 t ha?1) in HPD.  相似文献

It is of theoretical as well as practical interest to identify the components of the photosynthetic machinery that govern variability in photosynthesis rate (A) and water-use efficiency (WUE), and to define the extent by which the component processes limit A and WUE during developing water-deficit stress. For that purpose, leaf exchange of CO2 and H2O was determined in two growth-chamber-grown wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L. cv TAM W-101 and cv Sturdy), and the capacity of A was determined and broken down into carboxylation efficiency (c.e.), light- and CO2-saturated A, and stomatal conductance (gs) components. The limitations on A measured at ambient CO2 concentration (A350) were estimated. No cultivar difference was observed when A350 was plotted versus leaf water potential (Ψw). Light- and CO2-saturated A, c.e., and gs decreased with decreasing leaf Ψw, but of the corresponding photosynthesis limitations only those caused by insufficient c.e. and gs increased. Thus, reduced stomatal aperture and Calvin cycle activity, but not electron transport/photophosphorylation, appeared to be major reasons for drought stress-induced inhibition of A350. WUE measured as A350/gs first increased with stomatal closure down to a gs of about 0.25 mol H2O m−2 s−1w = −1.6 MPa). However, it was predicted that A350/gs would decrease with more severe stress due to inhibition of c.e.  相似文献

Aims

Climate, soil water potential (SWP), leaf relative water content (RWC), stomatal conductance (gs), fruit and shoot growth, and carbohydrate levels were monitored during the 2008 and 2009 growing seasons to study the responses of ‘Gala’ and ‘Fuji’ apple trees to irrigation placement or volume.

Methods

Three irrigation treatments were imposed, conventional irrigation (CI), partial root-zone drying (PRD, 50% of CI water on one side of the root-zone, which was alternated periodically), and continuous deficit irrigation (DI, 50% of CI water on both sides of the root-zone).

Results

After each irrigation season, DI generated twice the soil water deficit (SWDint) than PRD (average of dry and wet sides) and a greater integrated leaf water deficit (LWDint) than PRD and CI. Both PRD and DI reduced gs by 9 and 15% over the irrigation period. RWC of both PRD and DI was directly related to SWP and inversely related (non-linear) to vapor pressure deficit (VPD), whereas it was unrelated to gs. Considering individual sampling days, gs of ‘Gala’ leaves was inversely related to VPD mainly until early August (fruit at cell expansion phase and high VPD), while it was directly related to VPD in September (no fruit and low VPD). On the contrary, gs of ‘Fuji’ leaves was inversely related to VPD from late August until mid October (low VPD and fruit at cell expansion phase). Fruit growth was not affected by irrigation, whereas shoot and trunk growth was reduced by DI. Irrigation induced sporadic and inconsistent changes in carbohydrate contents or partitioning, with a general tendency of DI leaves to degrade and PRD to accumulate sorbitol and sucrose in dry periods.

Conclusions

‘Gala’ trees exhibited a more conservative water use than ‘Fuji’ trees due primarily to different timing of fruit growth and crop loads. Different levels of SWDint, rather than changes in stomatal control and carbohydrate partitioning, seem to play a major role in determining a better water status in PRD than in DI trees.  相似文献

A key objective for sustainable agriculture and forestry is to breed plants with both high carbon gain and water-use efficiency (WUE). At the level of leaf physiology, this implies increasing net photosynthesis (A N) relative to stomatal conductance (g s). Here, we review evidence for CO2 diffusional constraints on photosynthesis and WUE. Analyzing past observations for an extensive pool of crop and wild plant species that vary widely in mesophyll conductance to CO2 (g m), g s, and foliage A N, it was shown that both g s and g m limit A N, although the relative importance of each of the two conductances depends on species and conditions. Based on Fick’s law of diffusion, intrinsic WUE (the ratio A N/g s) should correlate on the ratio g m/g s, and not g m itself. Such a correlation is indeed often observed in the data. However, since besides diffusion A N also depends on photosynthetic capacity (i.e., V c,max), this relationship is not always sustained. It was shown that only in a very few cases, genotype selection has resulted in simultaneous increases of both A N and WUE. In fact, such a response has never been observed in genetically modified plants specifically engineered for either reduced g s or enhanced g m. Although increasing g m alone would result in increasing photosynthesis, and potentially increasing WUE, in practice, higher WUE seems to be only achieved when there are no parallel changes in g s. We conclude that for simultaneous improvement of A N and WUE, genetic manipulation of g m should avoid parallel changes in g s, and we suggest that the appropriate trait for selection for enhanced WUE is increased g m/g s.  相似文献

Aims

There is evidence that increased N inputs to boreal forests, via atmospheric deposition or intentional fertilization, may impact negatively on ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi leading to a reduced flux of plant-derived carbon (C) back to the atmosphere via ECM. Our aim was to investigate the impact of N fertilization of a Pinus sylvestris (L.) forest stand on the return of recently photoassimilated C via the ECM component of soil respiration.

Methods

We used an in situ, large-scale, 13C-CO2 isotopic pulse labelling approach and monitored the 13C label return using soil gas efflux chambers placed over three different types of soil collar to distinguish between heterotrophic (RH), autotrophic (RA; partitioned further into contributions from ECM hyphae and total RA) and total (RS) soil respiration.

Results

The impact of N fertilization was to significantly reduce RA, particularly respiration via extramatrical ECM hyphae. ECM hyphal flux in control plots showed substantial spatial variability, resulting in mean flux estimates exceeding estimates of total RA, while ECM contributions to RA in N treated plots were estimated at around 30%.

Conclusion

Significant impacts on soil C cycling may be caused by reduced plant C allocation to ECM fungi in response to increased N inputs to boreal forests; ecosystem models so far lack this detail.  相似文献

Aims

Major aims were to test and evaluate a new concept for assessment of nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) of crops by growing six spring wheat varieties in greenhouse and field environments. NUE was calculated with a plant based concept integrating the entire crop life history and separating plant characteristics from environmental factors affecting NUE. Specific hypotheses were tested related to the varieties’ drought and nutrient fertilisation responses for NUE components, and coherence of those responses in field and greenhouse.

Methods

The wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivated varieties ‘Diskett’, ‘Granary’, ‘Quarna’, ‘Stilett’, ‘Vinjett’, and a Swedish landrace (‘Dala’) were grown in field and greenhouse environments in Central Sweden. Two fertilisation treatments were included in a field and greenhouse experiment, and in the greenhouse also drought. The NUE components N uptake efficiency (UN), grain-specific N efficiency (EN,g) and grain N concentration (CN,g) were assessed.

Results

Drought reduced yield and NUE through EN,g, and more so when drought occurred prior to anthesis than after anthesis. Effect of fertilisation treatment on NUE components was similar in the two set-ups, but there were fewer variety × fertilisation interactions in the field. UN was higher in the field and EN,g was higher in the greenhouse, while CN,g and overall NUE were similar in the two environments. Ranking of varieties regarding NUE and UN was similar in the greenhouse and field, but different regarding EN,g and CN,g.

Conclusions

The NUE concept is a useful tool to describe and integrate important NUE components for crops grown in different treatments (nutrient fertilisation, drought) and experimental set-ups, i.e. greenhouse and field. Similar variety ranking in overall NUE across experimental set-ups indicates stable results in different environments.  相似文献

Key message

Using an extensive dataset for 39 subtropical broadleaved tree species, we found traits of the leaf economics spectrum to be linked to mean stomatal conductance but not to stomatal regulation.

Abstract

The aim of our study was to establish links between stomatal control and functional leaf traits. We hypothesized that mean and maximum stomatal conductance (g s) varies with the traits described by the leaf economics spectrum, such as specific leaf area and leaf dry matter content, and that high g s values correspond to species with tender leaves and high photosynthetic capacity. In addition, we hypothesized that species with leaves of low stomata density have more limited stomatal closure than those with high stomata density. In order to account for confounding site condition effects, we made use of a common garden situation in which 39 deciduous and evergreen species of the same age were grown in a biodiversity ecosystem functioning experiment in Jiangxi (China). Daily courses of g s were measured with porometry, and the species-specific g s~vpd relationships were modeled. Our results show that mean stomatal conductance can be predicted from leaf traits that represent the leaf economics spectrum, with a positive relationship being related to leaf nitrogen content and a negative relationship with the leaf carbon: nitrogen ratio. In contrast, parameters of stomatal control were related to traits unassociated with the leaf economics spectrum. The maximum of the conductance~vpd curve was positively related to leaf carbon content and vein length. The vpd at the point of inflection of the conductance~vpd curve was lower for species with higher stomata density and higher for species with a high leaf carbon content. Overall, stomata size and density as well as vein length were more effective at explaining stomatal regulation than traits used in the leaf economics spectrum.  相似文献

A field study was conducted on a 5-year-old orchard of ‘Royal Gala’ apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) in Stellenbosch, South Africa, to investigate whether the measures employed to control sunburn in fruit, viz., evaporative cooling, Surround WP and 20% black shade net affect leaf photosynthetic gas exchange attributes in comparison to untreated control during the 2003/2004 season. Shade net significantly reduced midday leaf net photosynthetic rate (A) compared to evaporative cooling. Furthermore, shade net and Surround WP significantly reduced midday leaf stomatal conductance (gs) compared to evaporative cooling and control. Evaporative cooling increased light saturated photosynthetic rate by 27 and 24% compared to shade net and Surround WP, respectively. Light compensation point and dark respiration of shaded leaves were about a third of the other treatments and about 50% less than the control leaves, respectively. Shade net down-regulated photosynthetic capacity of the leaves as evidenced by lower maximum rate of carboxylation and light saturated rate of electron transport compared to control leaves. Sunburn control treatments reduced day respiration by 60–70% compared to the control. Response of A and gs to increasing temperature showed only slight increase in both A and gs with increasing temperature from 20 to 30 °C. A declined at 35 °C in Surround WP and shade net leaves while it declined at 40 °C in evaporatively cooled and control leaves. Evaporative cooling and control had higher gs than shade net and Surround WP at all leaf temperatures. In conclusion, shade net down-regulated photosynthetic reactions and Surround WP and shade net reduced leaf gs and increased the vulnerability of leaf A and gs to high temperature compared to evaporative cooling and control.  相似文献

Large spatial and temporal gradients in rainfall and temperature occur across Australia. This heterogeneity drives ecological differentiation in vegetation structure and ecophysiology. We examined multiple leaf‐scale traits, including foliar 13C isotope discrimination (Δ13C), rates of photosynthesis and foliar N concentration and their relationships with multiple climate variables. Fifty‐five species across 27 families were examined across eight sites spanning contrasting biomes. Key questions addressed include: (i) Does Δ13C and intrinsic water‐use efficiency (WUEi) vary with climate at a continental scale? (ii) What are the seasonal and spatial patterns in Δ13C/WUEi across biomes and species? (iii) To what extent does Δ13C reflect variation in leaf structural, functional and nutrient traits across climate gradients? and (iv) Does the relative importance of assimilation and stomatal conductance in driving variation in Δ13C differ across seasons? We found that MAP, temperature seasonality, isothermality and annual temperature range exerted independent effects on foliar Δ13C/WUEi. Temperature‐related variables exerted larger effects than rainfall‐related variables. The relative importance of photosynthesis and stomatal conductance (gs) in determining Δ13C differed across seasons: Δ13C was more strongly regulated by gs during the dry‐season and by photosynthetic capacity during the wet‐season. Δ13C was most strongly correlated, inversely, with leaf mass area ratio among all leaf attributes considered. Leaf Nmass was significantly and positively correlated with MAP during dry‐ and wet‐seasons and with moisture index (MI) during the wet‐season but was not correlated with Δ13C. Leaf Pmass showed significant positive relationship with MAP and Δ13C only during the dry‐season. For all leaf nutrient‐related traits, the relationships obtained for Δ13C with MAP or MI indicated that Δ13C at the species level reliably reflects the water status at the site level. Temperature and water availability, not foliar nutrient content, are the principal factors influencing Δ13C across Australia.  相似文献

The effect of leaf water potential () on net CO2 assimilation rate (A), stomatal conductance (g), transpiration (E) and water-use efficiency (WUE) was measured for three cultivars of cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) seedlings during three recurrent drought cycles. Net assimilation varied greatly at high water potentials, but as dropped below approximately -0.8 and -1.0 MPa, A was reduced to less than 1.5 mol CO2 m-2 s-1. The relation between g and A was highly significant and conformed to an asymptotic exponential model, with A approaching maximal values at stomatal conductances of 55–65 mmol H2O m-2 s-1. Net assimilation varied linearly (r=0.95) with transpiration, and the slope of the A-E relation (WUE) was approximately 3.0 mol CO2 mmol-1 H2O throughout the range of stomatal conductances observed. C i was insensitive to water stress, even though both g and A were strongly affected. Under the experimental conditions used here, mesophyll photosynthesis did not appear to control g through changes in C i. As stress intensified within each drying cycle, WUE of nonirrigated seedlings did not decline relative to that of controls even though CO2 and water vapor exchange rates underwent large displacements. The effect of seed source was highly significant for WUE, and the basis for observed differences among genotypes is discussed.Abbreviations ABA Abscisic Acid  相似文献

Trees drought responses could be developed in the short- or in the long-term, aiming at sustaining carbon fixation and water use efficiency (WUE). The objective of this study was to examine short- and long-term adjustments occurring in different size Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex P. & C. Laws trees in response to seasonal drought when they are growing under different competition level. The following variables were studied: branch and stem hydraulic conductivity, canopy and stomatal conductance (gc, gs), transpiration (E), photosynthesis (A max), wood δ13C (as a proxy of intrinsic WUE), leaf to sapwood area ratio (A L:A s) and growth in the biggest (B) and the smallest (S) trees of high (H) and low (L) density stands. A L:A s was positively correlated with tree size and negatively correlated with competition level, increasing leaf hydraulic conductance in H trees. Accordingly, higher gc and E per unit A L were found in H than in L trees when soil water availability was high, but decreased abruptly during dry periods. BL trees maintained stable gc and E values even during the summer drought. The functional adjustments observed in H trees allow them to maintain their hydraulic integrity (no apparent k s losses), but their stem and leaf growth were severely affected by drought events. iWUE was similar between all tree groups in a wet season, whereas it significantly decreased in SH trees in a dry season suggesting that when radiation and water are co-limiting gas exchange, functional adjustments not only affect absolute growth, but also WUE.  相似文献

The morphological features of stomata including their size and density could be modulated by environmental cues; however, the underlying mechanisms remain largely elusive. Here, the effect of different irrigation and phosphorus (P) regimes on stomatal size (SS) and stomatal density (SD) of potato leaves was investigated. The plants were grown in split-root pots under two P fertilization rates (viz., 0 and 100 mg kg−1 soil, denoted as P0 and P1, respectively) and subjected to full (FI), deficit (DI), and partial root-zone drying (PRD) irrigation regimes. Results showed that SS and SD were unresponsive to P but significantly affected by the irrigation treatment. FI plants had the largest SS, followed by DI, and PRD the smallest; and the reverse was the case for SD. Compared to FI and DI, PRD plants had significantly lower values of specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf carbon isotope discrimination (Δ13C) under P0. Midday leaf water potential (Ψleaf) and stomatal conductance (gs) was similar for DI and PRD, which was significantly lower than that of FI. Leaf contents of C, N, K, Ca and Mg were higher in PRD than in DI plants, particularly under P0. When analyzed across the three irrigation regimes, it was found that the P1 plants had significantly higher leaf contents of P and Mg, but significantly lower leaf K content compared to the P0 plants. Linear correlation analyses revealed that SS was positively correlated with Ψleaf and Δ13C; whereas SD was negatively correlated with Ψleaf, Δ13C and SLA, and positively correlated with leaf C, N and Ca contents. And gs was positively correlated with SS but negatively correlated with SD. Collectively, under low P level, the smaller and denser stomata in PRD plants may bring about a more efficient stomatal control over gas exchange, hereby potentially enhance water-use efficiency as exemplified by the lowered leaf Δ13C under fluctuating soil moisture conditions.  相似文献
