The role of the rabbit's ear in cold acclimation was studied by varying the temperature of a climatic room in the range from -10 to +30 degrees C; The skin temperature in a nonanesthetized rabbit's ear showed a characteristic response to changes in ambient temperatures; plotting the ear temperature against the ambient temperature yielded an S-shaped curve. The mean ambient temperature corresponding to the inflection point on the S-shaped curve shifted significantly from about 13 degrees C to about 8 degrees C after cold acclimated of a group fed for 7 wk at -10 degrees C. The shift of the S-shaped curve after cold acclimation may not be due to the change in the norepinephrine sensitivity of the vascular beds of the ear: the effect of norepinephrine on the pressure-flow curve in the isolated rabbit's ear was almost unchanged between the control and the cold-acclimated groups. It is proposed that the shift of the inflection point gives a qualitative index of the acclimated state of the rabbit at a particular temperature.  相似文献

Individual and permanent identification of experimental animals is a common and often essential research practice. There is little information available on the short-term effects of these procedures on the animals. In this study, seven rats were implanted with telemetric devices. The effects of three different identification methods (ear tattoo, ear notching and microtattoo) were compared. Cardiovascular data were collected for 24 h after the procedures. Time periods of 0-1, 1-4, 4-16 h (dark) and 16-24 h after the procedure were analysed separately. The most pronounced differences in measured parameters were observed during the first hour after the procedures were performed. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) was significantly higher (P < 0.012) following the ear tattoo than the microtattoo procedure by a difference of approximately 5 mmHg. Heart rate (HR) was significantly elevated (P < 0.001) after ear tattoo compared with both ear notching (Δ = 31 beats per minute [bpm]) and microtattoo (Δ = 44 bpm). During the 1-4 h period and the following dark period, the MAP was highest in the ear notching group, but no differences were observed in the HRs. During the following dark period (4-16 h) and the next day (16-24 h) differences in MAP and HR were minor. In conclusion, microtattoo appears to cause the mildest changes in HR and blood pressure. Based on these results, ear tattoo and ear notching should be replaced by microtattoo whenever possible.  相似文献

This work implies the analysis of the possible existence of heterolaterality for auditory sensitivity and so the presence of a guiding or dominant ear as certain observations have suggested. The analysis of the frequencies of dextrotic, levotic or ambiotic individuals in a sample representing the general Asturian population of both sexes and ages between, mostly, 14 to 23 years reveals that the dextrotic individuals almost make up two thirds of the population (72.47%) whereas the ambiotics represent a very small percentage of the whole (3.17%). In this way, it can be pointed out that no sexual differences were detected for this somatophysiological characteristic, that find confirmation in tests of statistical significance. It seems that lef-handed people have a behaviour similar to that of the general population. It therefore appears that lef-handedness is not associated to the presence of a dominant lef-ear people. The presence of a guiding ear clearly represented by the right ear, finds a satisfactory explanation in the model put forward by KIMURA (1961) which marks the preponderance of the contralateral route over the ipsolateral one in the arrival of the acoustic information of both ears to the left hemisphere, in where it is processed, as the adaptative advantage to language. The apparent hearing similarity of left and right-handed people seems to reveal the non existence of differences despite the supposed “dominance” of the right hemisphere in the later, which should therefore be considered only for determined functions.  相似文献

Statoacoustic ganglion (SAG) neurons send their peripheral processes to navigate into the inner ear sensory organs where they will ultimately become post-synaptic to mature hair cells. During early ear development, neuroblasts delaminate from a restricted region of the ventral otocyst and migrate to form the SAG. The pathfinding mechanisms employed by the processes of SAG neurons as they search for their targets in the periphery are the topic of this review. Multiple lines of evidence exist to support the hypothesis that a combination of cues are working to guide otic axons to their target sensory organs. Some pioneer neurites may retrace their neuronal migratory pathway back to the periphery, yet additional guidance mechanisms likely complement this process. The presence of chemoattractants in the ear is supported by in vitro data showing that the otic epithelium exerts both trophic and tropic effects on the statoacoustic ganglion. The innervation of ectopic hair cells, generated after gene misexpression experiments, is further evidence for chemoattractant involvement in the pathfinding of SAG axons. While the source(s) of chemoattractants in the ear remains unknown, candidate molecules, including neurotrophins, appear to attract otic axons during specific time points in their development. Data also suggest that classical axon repellents such as Semaphorins, Eph/ephrins and Slit/Robos may be involved in the pathfinding of otic axons. Morphogens have recently been implicated in guiding axonal trajectories in many other systems and therefore a role for these molecules in otic axon guidance must also be explored.  相似文献

When electrical resonances were observed in acoustic sensory cells of lower vertebrates, the hearing research community was presented with the exciting possibility that tuning in the ears of those animals might be explained directly in terms of familiar molecular devices. It is reported here that in the frog sacculus, where electrical resonances have been observed in isolated hair cells, the effects of those resonances are completely obscured in the tuning properties of the sacculus in the intact ear. This observation has important implications not only for students of the ear, but for reductionist biologists in general. All of the dynamic properties of a system of connected, bidirectional processes are consequences of all of those processes at once; in such a system, the properties of an experimentally isolated subsystem may be totally obscured in the operation of the system as a whole.  相似文献

Cell lines have provided important experimental tools that have enhanced our understanding of neural and sensory function. They are particularly valuable in inner ear research because the auditory and vestibular systems are small, complex, and encased in several layers of bone. Organotypic cultures provide an invaluable experimental resource but require repeated microdissection and culture, and remain complex in terms of cell types and states of differentiation. A number of laboratories have established cell lines that offer a range of potential applications to hearing research. This review describes the advances that have already been made with these lines and the potential applications that they offer in the future. The majority of the cell lines are immortalized with a conditionally expressed, temperature sensitive variant of the SV40 tumor antigen. We discuss the value of these cells in developmental studies.  相似文献
