The phyllotaxy in Hibiscus furcartus is spiral. It is foundthat there is a general tendency for lateral branches to acquirethe same sense (right-handed or left-handed) of phyllotaxy asthe parent branch. H. furcartus has two kinds of flowers, right-handedflowers with clockwise imbricated petals and left-handed flowerswith anticlockwise imbricated petals. It is found that brancheswith right-handed phyllotaxy yield only left-handed flowersand those with left-handed phyllotaxy yield only right-handedflowers. The flowers of certain plants define a right or left handedness by the sense in which the petals are twisted. Some species and even entire families have flowers of only one particular handedness. There are also plants which produce right-handed as well as left-handed flowers in the same bloom. In the plants of themalvaceae family which belongs to this category, the probability of occurrence of flowers having a given handedness (right or left) undergoes time variations. The possible implications of the right-left symmetry problem of flowers is discussed.  相似文献

On the basis of data in the literature, the percentages of dextral versus sinistral species of snails have been calculated for western Europe, Turkey, North America (north of Mexico), and Japan. When the family of Clausiliidae is represented, about a quarter of all snail species may be sinistral, whereas less than one per cent of the species may be sinistral where that family does not occur. The number of single-gene speciation events on the basis of chirality, resulting in the origin of mirror image species, is not closely linked to the percentage of sinistral versus dextral species in a particular region. Turkey is nevertheless exceptional by both a high percentage of sinistral species and a high number of speciation events resulting in mirror image species. Shell morphology and genetic background may influence the ease of chirality-linked speciation, whereas sinistrality may additionally be selected against by internal selection. For the Clausiliidae, the fossil record and the recent fauna suggest that successful reversals in coiling direction occurred with a frequency of once every three to four million years.  相似文献

The fascinating and often unlikely shell shapes in the terrestrial micromollusc family Diplommatinidae (Gastropoda: Caenogastropoda) provide a particularly attractive set of multiple morphological traits to investigate evolutionary patterns of shape variation. Here, a molecular phylogenetic reconstruction, based on five genes and 2700 bp, was undertaken for this family, integrated with ancestral state reconstruction and phylogenetic PCA of discrete and quantitative traits, respectively. We found strong support for the Diplommatininae as a monophyletic group, separating the Cochlostomatidae into a separate family. Five main clades appear within the Diplommatininae, corresponding with both coiling direction and biogeographic patterns. A Belau clade (A) with highly diverse (but always sinistral) morphology comprised Hungerfordia, Palaina, and some Diplommatina. Arinia (dextral) and Opisthostoma (sinistroid) are sister groups in clade B. Clade C and D solely contain sinistral Diplommatina that are robust and little ornamented (clade C) or slender and sculptured (clade D). Clade E is dextral but biogeographically diverse with species from all sampled regions save the Caroline Islands. Adelopoma, Diplommatina, Palaina, and Hungerfordia require revision to allow taxonomy to reflect phylogeny, whereas Opisthostoma is clearly monophyletic. Ancestral state reconstruction suggests a sinistral origin for the Diplommatinidae, with three reversals to dextrality.  相似文献

Phenotypic polymorphisms in natural systems are often maintained by ecological selection, but only if niche segregation between morphs exists. Polymorphism for eyed-side direction is rare among the approximately 700 species of flatfish (Pleuronectiformes), and the evolutionary mechanisms that maintain it are unknown. Platichthys stellatus (starry flounder) is a polymorphic pleuronectid flatfish exhibiting large, clinal variation in proportion of left-eyed (sinistral) morphs, from 50% in California to 100% in Japan. Here I examined multiple traits related to swimming and foraging performance between sinistral and dextral morphs of P. stellatus from 12 sites to investigate if the two morphs differ in ways that may affect function and ecology. Direction of body asymmetry was correlated with several other characters: on an average, dextral morphs had longer, wider caudal peduncles, shorter snouts and fewer gill rakers than sinistral morphs. Although the differences were small in magnitude, they were consistent in direction across samples, implying that dextral and sinistral starry flounder may be targeting different prey types. Morphological differences between morphs were greatest in samples where the chances of competitive interactions between them were the greatest. These results suggest that the two morphs are not ecologically identical, may represent a rare example of divergent selection maintaining polymorphism of asymmetric forms, and that correlational selection between body asymmetry and other characters may be driven by competitive interactions between sinistral and dextral flatfish. This study is one of very few that demonstrates the ecological significance of direction in a species with polymorphic asymmetric forms.  相似文献

Starry flounder Platichthys stellatus , a rare polymorphic flatfish exhibiting a large-scale geographic cline in the frequency of right-eyed (dextral) and left-eyed (sinistral) morphs, was studied to investigate whether foraging behaviour (turning angle and prey strike orientation) differed between dextral and sinistral laboratory-raised juveniles. Platichthys stellatus foraging on brine shrimp Artemia sp. nauplii tended to strike dorsally at prey ('left' to an observer for dextral flounder and 'right' to an observer for sinistral flounder), although this effect was stronger for sinistral fish. This dorsal tendency also increased with body size. Non-strike behaviours (movements between strikes) were ventrally biased for both morphs. Maximum turn angles were larger for both morphs towards the dorsal side than the ventral side during prey strikes but were the same during non-strike behaviours. The positioning of the eyes of the juvenile starry flounder was skewed towards the dorsal midline rather than being symmetrically placed between dorsal and ventral margins on the eyed side of each fish. The migrating eyes of dextral fish, however, were significantly closer to the dorsal midline than in sinistral fish. This, in addition to the more dorsally oriented prey strikes in sinistral fish, suggests that the morphs are not simple behavioural mirror images of one another and therefore may differ ecologically.  相似文献

Acylated beta-cyclodextrins (beta-CDs) were studied to gain perspective on maltose octapropanoate, the crystal structure of which was reported in the preceding paper in this issue. Acylated beta-CDs are distorted so we looked at other CDs and gained increased understanding of distortion in CDs and possibly, shapes in starch. Classic CDs have six to eight glucose residues in a doughnut shape that is stabilized by a ring of inter-residue O3,,,O2' hydrogen bonds. On a phi,psi energy map for a maltose analog that does not form hydrogen bonds, classic CD linkages have higher energies than structures that are stabilized by the exo-anomeric effect. In distorted beta-CDs, which lack hydrogen bonding, some linkages attain low-energies from the exo-anomeric effect and acyl stacking. Those linkages result in left-handed helical geometry so other linkages are forced by the CD macrocycle to have counter-balancing right-handed character. Permethylated gamma-CDs have two 'flipping' linkages as do some larger native CDs. Flipping linkages allow two left-handed segments to join into a macrocycle, thus avoiding the higher-energy, right-handed forms. Some glucose rings in derivatized beta-CDs have substantial positive twists of the pseudo torsion angle O1-C1...C4-O4, adding right-handed character to balance the left-handed linkages. In substituted gamma-CD, all residues have negative twists, giving extra left-handed character to the short, pseudo-helical segments. In non-macrocyclic molecules the twists ranged from -14 degrees to +2 degrees , averaging -6.1 degrees. In these beta- and gamma-CDs, the twists ranged from -22 degrees to +16 degrees for (4)C(1) rings, and the (O)S(2) ring in acetylated beta-CD has a twist of +34 degrees . Glucose residues in other CDs were less twisted.  相似文献

Reversed chirality has frequently evolved in snails, although the vast majority coils dextrally. However, there are often sinistral species within a dextral genus or almost exclusively sinistral families, such as the Clausiliidae. Some populations of the predominantly sinistral clausiliid genus Albinaria, in the southern Greek mainland, coil dextrally. The origin, evolution and distribution of the dextral Albinaria are puzzling, and as there is no reliable phylogenetic reconstruction for this speciose genus, it remains unclear how many times a shift in chirality has really occurred. In this study, our aim was to elucidate the evolutionary pathways of dextrality in Albinaria. We undertook a molecular phylogenetic analysis of two mtDNA (16S and COI) and one nDNA marker (ITS1) and included dextral and sinistral representatives found in syntopy or not. Both mtDNA and nDNA tree topologies imply that dextrals did not evolve as a monophyletic lineage. Instead, dextral lineages have evolved from sinistral ancestors multiple times independently. The fragmented population structure in Albinaria facilitates genetic drift and contributes to fixation of the opposite chirality and overcoming of the mating disadvantage of left–right reversal. Stochastic phenomena and biogeographical barriers have trapped those reversals in a limited geographical area.  相似文献

Summary The genetics of body asymmetry inLymnaea peregra follows a maternal mode of inheritance involving a single locus with dextrality being dominant to sinistrality. Maternal inheritance implies that all members of a brood have the same phenotype, however, some broods contain a few individuals of opposite coil. One purpose of this paper is to explain the origin of these anomalous individuals. Genetic analyses of sinistral broods with a few dextral individuals have led to the development of a cross-over model, with the anomalous dextrals originating as a consequence of crossing over either during meiosis or mitosis in the female germ line. The crossover either reconstitutes the dextral gene from previously dissociated parts, or creates a dextral gene by means of a position effect. The probability of a crossover event depends upon the appropriate combination of complementary sinistral chromosomes. Each crossover event has the potential of creating a unique dextral gene. Genetic analyses of dextral broods containing a few sinistral individuals have demonstrated that different dextral genes vary in penetrance. The dextral gene produces a product during oogenesis which influences the pattern of cleavage in the embryo; this cleavage pattern is translated into the appropriate body asymmetry. The other purpose of this paper is to provide an assay for this gene product. Cytoplasm from dextral eggs injected into uncleaved sinistral eggs causes these eggs to cleave in a dextral pattern. Cytoplasm from sinistral eggs has no effect on the cleavage pattern of dextral eggs. While the dextral gene product is made during oogenesis, it does not function in controlling cleavage until just before this process begins.  相似文献

Handedness in plant growth may be most familiar to us when we think of tendrils or twining plants, which generally form consistent right- or left-handed helices as they climb. The petals of several species are sometimes arranged like fan blades that twist in the same direction. Another less conspicuous example is 'circumnutation', the oscillating growth of axial organs, which alternates between a clockwise and an anti-clockwise direction. To unravel molecular components and cellular determinants of handedness, we screened Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings for helical growth mutants with fixed handedness. Recessive spiral1 and spiral2 mutants show right-handed helical growth in roots, hypocotyls, petioles and petals; semi-dominant lefty1 and lefty2 mutants show opposite left-handed growth in these organs. lefty mutations are epistatic to spiral mutations. Arabidopsis helical growth mutants with fixed handedness may be impaired in certain aspects of cortical microtubule functions, and characterization of the mutated genes should lead us to a better understanding of how microtubules function in left-right handedness in plants.  相似文献

The RecA family of proteins mediates homologous recombination, an evolutionarily conserved pathway that maintains genomic stability by protecting against DNA double strand breaks. RecA proteins are thought to facilitate DNA strand exchange reactions as closed-rings or as right-handed helical filaments. Here, we report the crystal structure of a left-handed Sulfolobus solfataricus RadA helical filament. Each protomer in this left-handed filament is linked to its neighbour via interactions of a β-strand polymerization motif with the neighbouring ATPase domain. Immediately following the polymerization motif, we identified an evolutionarily conserved hinge region (a subunit rotation motif) in which a 360° clockwise axial rotation accompanies stepwise structural transitions from a closed ring to the AMP–PNP right-handed filament, then to an overwound right-handed filament and finally to the left-handed filament. Additional structural and functional analyses of wild-type and mutant proteins confirmed that the subunit rotation motif is crucial for enzymatic functions of RecA family proteins. These observations support the hypothesis that RecA family protein filaments may function as rotary motors.  相似文献

Sucrose synthesis and sucrose hydrolysis in cut carnations (Dianthus caryophyllus) supplied with glucose solution .
Sucrose synthesis and hydrolysis in cut carnations supplied with a glucose solution have been investigated using both entire floral branches and floral branches without any of their organs (petals, non-petaloid pieces, leaves) and isolated organs. – The flower is a more active sink that the leaves. The transformationn of glucose into sucrose is essential for the ability of the flower to use the exogenous glucose. All organs of the floral branch (petals, ovaries and sepals, leaves, stem) are able to form sucrose. The hydrolysis of the obtained sucrose occurs nearly exclusively in the petals.  相似文献

Tipuana tipu (Benth.) Kuntze is a tree from the leguminosae family (Papilionoideae) indigenous in Argentina and extensively used in urbanism, mainly in Southern Brazil. The epicuticular waxes of leaves and branch, and flower surface were studied by high temperature high resolution gas chromatography. Several compounds were characterized, among which the aliphatic alcohols were predominant in branch, leaves and receptacle. Alkanes were predominant only in the petals and the aliphatic acids were predominant in stamen. In branches and leaf epicuticular surfaces, six long chain wax esters series were characterized, as well as lupeol and b-amyrin hexadecanoates.  相似文献

The capacity of individual branches to store water and fix carbon can have profound effects on inflorescence size and architecture, thus on floral display, pollination, and fecundity. Mixed regression was used to investigate the relation between branch length, a proxy for plant resources, and floral display of Fouquieria splendens (ocotillo), a woody, candelabraform shrub of wide distribution in arid North America. Long branches produced three times as many flowers as short branches, regardless of overall plant size. Long branches also had more complex panicles with more cymes and cyme types than short branches; thus, branch length also influenced inflorescence architecture. Within panicles, increasing the number of cymes by one unit added about two flowers, whereas increasing the number of cyme types by one unit added about 21 flowers. Because flower production is mediated by branch length, and because most plants have branches of various lengths, the floral display of individual plants necessarily encompasses a wide range of inflorescence size and structure.  相似文献

The paucity of sinistral (left-coiling) relative to dextral (right-coiling) species of gastropods in the marine realm is an enigma. In Conus , one of the most diverse marine animal genera, sinistral shell coiling has evolved as a species-wide character only once. Fossils of this species, Conus adversarius , are found in Upper Pliocene and lowermost Pleistocene deposits in the southeastern USA. Conus adversarius had nonplanktonic larval development; this may have been a critical factor for the early establishment of the species, as well as sinistral marine species in other clades. Notably, most specimens of aberrantly sinistral modern Conus are derived from typically dextral species that have nonplanktonic development. If C. adversarius was reproductively isolated from dextral conspecifics, then this species may provide an example of nearly instantaneous sympatric speciation in the fossil record. Furthermore, the common and widespread – while geologically short-lived – fossil shells of C. adversarius show large amounts of variability in form and this variation may be related, at least in part, to a pleiotropic effect associated with the reversed coiling direction of this species.  相似文献

This study tries to establish correlations between the types of handedness and several morphophysiological characteristics, controlled by one or a small number of genes with alternative dominant recessive manifestation. The population-genetic homozygosity degree study includes the analysis of the presence, distribution and individual traits combination in left-handed and right-handed persons. It was conducted at three localities in two states, Serbia (SRB) and Montenegro (MNE). Our hypothesis is that a possible genetic load due to increased recessive homozygosity, being a potential population-genetic parameter of left-handedness manifestation, may cause some change in other morpho-physiological characters. The average proportion of 23 studied homozygously-recessive characters (HRC’s) was similar among observed left-handed individuals in the studied localities. It varied from 10.5 ± 0.4 in Serbia to 10.7 ± 0.3 in MNE. The differences were somewhat bigger among right-handed persons, varying from 8.7 ± 0.3 in MNE to 9.1 ± 0.3 HRC’s in Serbia. However, in all localities the average homozygosity was significantly higher among left-handed school children. The number of HRC’s among 400 individuals varied from 2 to 16 among right-handed and from 4 to 19 among left-handed persons. There were no differences in scholar scores between left-handed and right-handed children, although small differences were found between two state samples.  相似文献

Cells at the elongation zone expand longitudinally to form the straight central axis of plant stems, hypocotyls and roots, and transverse cortical microtubule arrays are generally recognized to be important for the anisotropic growth. Recessive mutations in either of two Arabidopsis thaliana SPIRAL loci, SPR1 or SPR2, reduce anisotropic growth of endodermal and cortical cells in roots and etiolated hypocotyls, and induce right-handed helical growth in epidermal cell files of these organs. spr2 mutants additionally show right-handed twisting in petioles and petals. The spr1spr2 double mutant's phenotype is synergistic, suggesting that SPR1 and SPR2 act on a similar process but in separate pathways in controlling cell elongation. Interestingly, addition of a low dose of either of the microtubule-interacting drugs propyzamide or taxol in the agar medium was found to reduce anisotropic expansion of endodermal and cortical cells at the root elongation zone of wild-type seedlings, resulting in left-handed helical growth. In both spiral mutants, exogenous application of these drugs reverted the direction of the epidermal helix, in a dose-dependent manner, from right-handed to left-handed; propyzamide at 1 microM and taxol at 0.2-0.3 microM effectively suppressed the cell elongation defects of spiral seedlings. The spr1 phenotype is more pronounced at low temperatures and is nearly suppressed at high temperatures. Cortical microtubules in elongating epidermal cells of spr1 roots were arranged in left-handed helical arrays, whereas the highly isotropic cortical cells of etiolated spr1 hypocotyls showed microtubule arrays with irregular orientations. We propose that a microtubule-dependent process and SPR1/SPR2 act antagonistically to control directional cell elongation by preventing elongating cells from potential twisting. Our model may have implicit bearing on the circumnutation mechanism.  相似文献

The overwhelming predominance of dextral coiling in gastropods is an outstanding and puzzling phenomenon. A few sinistral specimens (left coiling individuals) have been found in many dextral species. Only six sinistral shells have ever been found in Cerion; we base this analysis on the five available shells. We ask whether reversed symmetry is a simple either-or switch without further consequences for shell form, or whether sinistrality engenders associated effects, making left-coiling shells unlike their dextral deme-mates in other ways. All five sinistral shells differ in features of size and coiling late in growth, leading to relatively small apertures and a slight twist in the axis of coiling. We detect and measure this effect as follows: in multivariate morphospace, sinistrals occupy peripheral positions among their dextral deme-mates; in univariate analysis, sinistrals are consistently different for a set of characters involving covariance patterns never before seen in a decade of studies on ontogenetic and age-standardized variation in dextrals; a bootstrap procedure does not recover similar patterns in randomly constituted samples of dextrals matching the true sinistral distribution; direct x-ray measures of the coiling axis detect its slight twist in sinistrals. We discuss the implications of these unsuspected associations for the issues of developmental constraint upon the evolution of morphology.  相似文献

It has already been show that the helix senses of poly(β-benzyl L -aspartate) and poly(β-methyl L -aspartate) are left-handed, while the poly esters of n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, and phenethyl L -asparate are all right-handed. The effect of changes in helix sense from the left-handed to the right-handed α-helical form on the infrared spectra of copolymers of benzyl L -aspartate with ethyl, n-butyl, isopropyl, n-propyl, and phenethyl L -aspartate have been studied. Those show that for the right-handed helical form the amide band frequencies fall within the range given by Elliott,7 while for the left-handed form the frequencies are higher. The frequency ranges for the two helix senses are given and have been used to show that poly (β-n-propyl L -aspartate) in chloroform solution undergoes a transition from the right-handed to the left-handed helix form on heating. Polarized infrared studies of the different copolymers show that the disposition of the side chain ester groups is different for the two forms. Although methyl L -aspartate forms a left-handed α-helix similar to benzyl L -aspartate, the introduction of methyl L -aspartate residues into poly (β-benzyl L -aspartate) prevents the formation of the ω-helix. The factors involved in the formation of this helix form are discussed.  相似文献
