Glass eels arriving from the sea use alternative migratory tactics, leading either to the colonization of rivers or to an early settlement in marine or estuarine habitats. In the field, the migration may be environmentally affected by water temperature and the migratory behavior could be physiologically dependent on the body condition (energetic status). To investigate how these environmental and physiological effects on the migration are behaviorally mediated, we experimentally tested the effects of changes in water temperature and body condition on locomotor activity (upstream swimming) and salinity preference of Anguilla anguilla glass eels. Low water temperature reduced significantly both locomotor activity and preference for freshwater, in accordance with field data showing that low water temperatures hinder both the estuarine migration and river recruitment. Glass eels switched from a freshwater- towards a saltwater-preference as their body condition decreased, confirming that the energetic status may affect the migratory behavior. We suggest that, in the wild, this condition-dependent change in salinity preference of low body condition glass eels induces an early settlement in marine or estuarine habitats. Such a behavioral shift, stopping the energy expenditure linked to river-oriented migratory behavior, may be adaptive by limiting the probability of death due to exhaustion. Our results show that the glass eel migratory behavior, through locomotor activity and salinity preference, may be controlled by interacting physiological and environmental factors.  相似文献

Dispersal, one of the most important processes in population ecology, is an issue linking physiological and behavioral features. However, the endocrine control of animal dispersal remains poorly understood. Here, we tested whether and how thyroid hormones may influence dispersal in glass eels of Anguilla anguilla, by testing their influence on locomotor activity and rheotactic behavior. Glass eels were caught during their estuarine migration and treated by immersion in either a l-thyroxine (T(4)) or a thiourea (TU) solution. As measured by radioimmunoassay, T(4) and TU treatments induced, respectively, increased and decreased whole-body thyroid hormone levels relative to untreated controls. We tested a total of 960 glass eels distributed into control, and T(4) and TU treatment groups, on their swimming behavior in experimental flume tanks equipped with upstream and downstream traps that allowed us to concurrently measure both the locomotor activity and the rheotactic behavior. Compared to controls, locomotor activity significantly increased among the hyperthyroid, T(4)-treated eels, but significantly decreased among the hypothyroid, TU-treated eels. The results on rheotactic behavior suggested a more complex regulatory mechanism, since TU but not T(4) treatment significantly affected rheotactic behavior. The influence of thyroid hormones on locomotor activity suggests a central role for these hormones in the regulation of mechanisms leading to the colonization of continental habitats by glass eels. Thyroid hormones are also implicated in the control of locomotor activity in mammals and migratory behavior in birds, suggesting that these hormones represent conserved, proximate mediators of dispersal in vertebrates.  相似文献

The newly recruited Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica , elvers and 1-year-old eels collected in estuaries and in rivers, respectively, were studied. The microstructure and chemical composition of the sagittal otolith of these eels were examined by SEM and wavelength-dispersive spectrometer (WDS), A transition zone or'elver mark'was observed in the otolith of the young eels. A comparison of the otoliths of elvers with those from the 1-year-old eels suggests that this transition zone was deposited during upstream migration, a change from a marine to freshwater environment. Strontium (Sr) content in the primordium of the otolith of both elvers and young eels was low, probably due to the maternal or freshwater origin of the oocyte. The concentration of Sr in the otolith increased gradually during marine life and reached a peak approximately 1 month before upstream migration. As the elvers entered the estuary, the Src concentration dramatically decreased and remained at a low level thereafter. These findings indicate that the history of the migratory environment of the eel can be reconstructed from a combined study of otolith microstructure and microchemistry analysis.  相似文献

The present study investigated the potential role of conspecific chemical cues in inland juvenile American eel Anguilla rostrata migrations by assessing glass eel and 1 year old elver affinities to elver washings, and elver affinity to adult yellow eel washings. In two‐choice maze assays, glass eels were attracted to elver washings, but elvers were neither attracted to nor repulsed by multiple concentrations of elver washings or to yellow eel washings. These results suggest that A. rostrata responses to chemical cues may be life‐stage dependent and that glass eels moving inland may use the odour of the previous year class as information to guide migration. The role of chemical cues and olfaction in eel migrations warrants further investigation as a potential restoration tool.  相似文献

Catadromous fishes migrate between ocean and freshwater during particular phases of their life cycle. The dramatic environmental changes shape their physiological features, e.g. visual sensitivity, olfactory ability, and salinity tolerance. Anguilla marmorata, a catadromous eel, migrates upstream on dark nights, following the lunar cycle. Such behavior may be correlated with ontogenetic changes in sensory systems. Therefore, this study was designed to identify changes in spectral sensitivity and opsin gene expression of A. marmorata during upstream migration. Microspectrophotometry analysis revealed that the tropical eel possesses a duplex retina with rod and cone photoreceptors. The λmax of rod cells are 493, 489, and 489 nm in glass, yellow, and wild eels, while those of cone cells are 508, and 517 nm in yellow, and wild eels, respectively. Unlike European and American eels, Asian eels exhibited a blue-shifted pattern of rod photoreceptors during upstream migration. Quantitative gene expression analyses of four cloned opsin genes (Rh1f, Rh1d, Rh2, and SWS2) revealed that Rh1f expression is dominant at all three stages, while Rh1d is expressed only in older yellow eel. Furthermore, sequence comparison and protein modeling studies implied that a blue shift in Rh1d opsin may be induced by two known (N83, S292) and four putative (S124, V189, V286, I290) tuning sites adjacent to the retinal binding sites. Finally, expression of blue-shifted Rh1d opsin resulted in a spectral shift in rod photoreceptors. Our observations indicate that the giant mottled eel is color-blind, and its blue-shifted scotopic vision may influence its upstream migration behavior and habitat choice.  相似文献

为保护我国花鳗鲡资源,提高鳗鱼道入口吸引力,本研究以3 W水下景观灯为光源,利用自制多功能圆池设计了3种试验工况,探索花鳗鲡幼鱼的光色趋向性.结果表明: 3种试验工况下,鱼类在光区与暗区单位面积出现比例分别为(8.7±0.3)%和(3.6±1.7)%、(8.4±0.2)%和(5.0±1.4)%、(9.0±0.2)%和(1.9±1.3)%,且分布在光区的幼鱼多处于玻璃鳗发育阶段,而暗区的幼鱼多处于线鳗阶段(或向线鳗发育).光色区中鱼类出现次数百分比排在前3的分别为黄光区[(29.4±4.9)%]、红光区[(24.1±3.9)%]和紫光区[(17.2±4.0)%];黄光区[(29.4±3.3)%]、紫光区[(25.2±3.7)%]和红光区[(18.2±2.9)%];红光区[(33.3±2.3)%]、紫光区[(25.6±3.8)%]和黄光区[(20.7±5.7)%].首先进入光区次数排在前3的分别为红、黄、紫光区;红、紫、黄光区;红、紫、黄光区.鱼类在上述3种光区中的总进出次数处于蓝绿光和五彩光之间,且红光和黄光下鱼类会出现视觉疲劳.花鳗鲡幼鱼对光的趋向性由其发育阶段决定,玻璃鳗对光色具有趋向性,尤喜爱红、黄和紫光,在鳗鱼道入口采用灯光诱鱼可帮助玻璃鳗找到生长洄游通道.  相似文献

The American eel (Anguilla rostrata) is an imperilled fish hypothesized to use conspecific cues, in part, to coordinate long-distance migration during their multistage life history. Here, holding water and tissue from multiple American eel life stages was collected and analysed for the presence, profile and concentration of bile acids. Distinct bile acid profiles were identified in glass, elver, yellow eel and silver eel holding waters using ultraperformance liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry and principal component analysis. Taurochenodeoxycholic acid, taurodeoxycholic acid, cholic acid, deoxycholic acid, taurolithocholic acid and taurocholic acid were detected in whole tissue of American glass eels and elvers, and in liver, intestine and gallbladder samples of late-stage yellow eels. Bile acids were not a major component of silver eel washings or tissue. This study is novel because little was previously known about bile acids produced and emitted into the environment by American eels. Future behavioural studies could evaluate whether any bile acids produced by American eels influence conspecific migratory behaviour.  相似文献

The Shannon, Ireland’s largest river, is used for hydroelectricity generation since 1929. Subsequently, the Electricity Supply Board assumed responsibility for management of its eel stocks, due to the impact of the hydro-dam on recruitment to the commercial fishery. In order to negate a decline in juvenile recruitment resulting from the installation of hydroelectric facilities, management was focused on stocking lakes with elvers and fingerling eels. These were trapped at the hydropower facilities and in estuarine tributaries during their up-stream migrations. Due to the decline of natural recruitment in more recent times, attempts have also been made to develop an estuarine glass eel fishery. Stock levels are then monitored through annual surveys of the population trends of juvenile (glass eel, elver), growing phase (yellow eel) and downstream migrating pre-spawners (silver eels). Survey results and fishery management programmes are reviewed in this article. In addition to the long-term effects the hydroelectric facilities have had on the stock levels, there is also an annual effect on the migratory patterns of downstream migratory silver eels. In the lower reaches of the river system flow rates are regulated by the hydroelectric stations. We review previous work that had highlighted the importance of flow in determining the timing of the silver eels migrations, and assess the relationship between flow and migration in more detail through the use of hydroacoustic and telemetric studies. Current research on seaward migrating silver eel populations, suggests that spawner escapement rates can most effectively be increased by trapping migrating eels at fishing weirs located up-stream of the power station and transporting them towards the estuary. Infection with the swim-bladder parasite Anguillicola crassus is suggested as one of the principal causes of the collapse of the European eel population. This nematode has been introduced in Europe from Asia in the 80s and parasitized in a short time Anguilla eel species in different geographical regions across the globe. The parasites drain energy due to their sanguivorous feeding and they cause mechanical damage on the swim-bladder wall. These two effects are hypothesized to impair the spawning migration of the European eel. In this study, we have investigated both effects on swimming performance. We hypothesized that parasitic sanguivorous activities - related to parasite weight - reduce swimming endurance, while mechanical damage of the swim-bladder impairs buoyancy control. Eighty eels suffering various degrees of infection were introduced in swim-tunnels and subjected to a swimming fitness test. The relation between A. crassus infection and swimming efficiency was measured for large female silver eels swimming at various speeds. Infected eels had lower cruising speeds and a higher cost of transport. Eels without parasites, but with a damaged swim-bladder showed similar effects. Almost half of the eels that contained damaged swim-bladders (43%) stopped swimming at low aerobic swimming speeds (< 0.7 m/s). Simulated migration trials in a recent related study have confirmed that eels with a high parasite level or with damaged swim-bladder show early migration failure (< 1000-km). Reduced swimming performance appears to be associated with swim-bladder dysfunction. As we found that especially silver eels have much higher infection levels than yellow eels, it is concluded that migrating silver eels with severely infected or damaged swim-bladders are unable to reach the spawning grounds.  相似文献

In glass eels (54 mm TL; 0.018 g) of the Australian shortfin eel Anguilla australis the fatty acid composition was typical of marine species, with a n-3 to n-6 ratio of 5.3, a low level of mono saturated fatty acids (monoenes) and a high level of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). In elvers (pigmented: 56 mm TL; 0.028 g), the n-3 to n-6 ratio was 2.6. In elvers monoenes, as per cent of all identifiable fatty acids, increased to 30.9% from that of 19.8% in glass eels. The fatty acid composition of juvenile eels, reared from the original stock of glass eels and elvers, in outdoor, fertilized ponds, with (115 mmTL; 2.2 g) and without feeding (110 mmTL; 1.9 g), had a fatty acid composition typical of freshwater species, with a n-3 to n-6 ratio 1.9 and 1.3, and 37.7 and 46.5% of monoenes in unfed and fed groups respectively. A principal component analysis summarized efficiently the progressive changes in fatty acid composition from the glass eel to juvenile eel stage. The observed changes in the fatty acid of the different developmental stages in Australian shortfin eel are discussed in relation to physiological changes associated with the diadromous habit.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is contributing to the study of the exploitation of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) in the basin of the French river 'Adour'. This exploitation constitutes the basis of the economy of local professional fishermen, who have recently noticed a diminution of the hunting of elvers. In order to design a sustainable exploitation strategy, we must know as much as possible about eel life cycle. For that purpose, we build a model to describe a phase of eels evolution, their migration upstream the river. Our model is based on the biological details of eels behaviour and constitutes a virtual laboratory, useful to test different hypotheses about eels migration.  相似文献

The European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is a fascinating species, exhibiting a complex life cycle. The species is, however, listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List due to an amalgam of factors, including habitat loss. This study investigated the burrowing behaviour and substrate preference of glass, elver and yellow stages of A. anguilla. Preference was determined by introducing eels in aquaria with different substrates and evaluating the chosen substrate for burrowing. In addition, burrowing was recorded using a camera in all substrate types and analysed for kinematics. The experiments showed that all of these life stages sought refuge in the sediments with particle sizes ranging from sand to coarse gravel. Starting from a resting position, they shook their head horizontally in combination with rapid body undulations until half of their body was within the substrate. High-speed X-ray videography revealed that once partly in the sediment, eels used only horizontal head sweeps to penetrate further, without the use of their tail. Of the substrates tested, burrowing performance was highest in fine gravel (diameter 1–2 mm; lower burrowing duration, less body movements and/or lower frequency of movements), and all eels readily selected this substrate for burrowing. However, glass eels and elvers were able to use coarse gravel (diameter >8 mm) because their smaller size allowed manoeuvring through the spaces between the grains. Further, burrowing performance increased with body size: glass eels required more body undulations compared to yellow eels. Interestingly, the urge to hide within the sediment was highest for glass eels and elvers. Documentation of substrate preference and burrowing behaviour of A. anguilla provides new information about their potential habitat use. Considering that habitat alterations and deteriorations are partly responsible for the decline of the eel, this information can contribute to the development of more effective conservation measures.  相似文献

We investigated the environmental factors that affected temporal variability of eel recruitment and upstream migration in a freshwater coastal river along the southeastern US. Glass eels Anguilla rostrata were collected through ichthyoplankton sampling in the lower Roanoke River, North Carolina. Monthly samples were taken from fixed stations from May 2001 through June 2003. There was no evidence of consistent seasonal migration patterns for glass eels in Roanoke River. From May through December in 2001, glass eels were captured only during August. In 2002, glass eels arrived in February and remained in ichthyoplankton samples through October, with the exception of samples from September. Peak catch occurred in March at 4.02 ± 1.2 and declined through June to 0.18 ± 0.07 (#/1,000 m3). By August, the mean density increased to 0.96 ± 0.82 and to 3.59 ± 2.77 by October. In 2003 from January through June, glass eels were captured only during February and March. Glass eels were routinely collected when river discharge rates were <150 m3 s−1. River discharge rates >650 m−3 s−1 resulted in no glass eels in our samples. Upstream migration during 2002 was not correlated with water temperature or related to lunar phase. Glass eel freshwater upstream migration was initiated when water temperatures exceeded a threshold range of 10°C to 15°C; however, glass eels continued to migrate when water temperatures approached 30°C. The overall negative effect of river discharge suggests that changes in the water release schedules of upstream hydroelectric facilities during glass eel migration could strongly influence their recruitment success.  相似文献

The influence of eel odour on the efficiency of a freshwater eel ladder and trap was assessed during two glass eel and yellow eel springtime upstream migration seasons in the Vilaine estuary, France. This test consisted of alternatively directing the outflow from the trap holding bin, away from, or onto the trap access ladder and comparing catches. Catches were 1.4 higher for both glass eels and juvenile eels when the trap water was directed towards the pass. The experiment had little influence on predicting ladder catches when compared to the environmental parameters. The distance of detection of the scent was calculated to range between 0 and 5m from the ladder.  相似文献

The behavior and movements of yellow and silver phase Japanese eels were observed using acoustic telemetry in the Fukui River estuary and the adjacent waters of Tachibana Bay, Tokushima Prefecture, Japan. The eels were tagged with ultrasonic transmitters and released in the bay, about 300 m from the river mouth in August and November, 1999. All four yellow eels released at the river mouth in August returned to the river. All eels swam further upstream and each stopped at similar locations as the others, which were possibly used as refuges. Each refuge appeared to be a relatively small area (less than 10 m) adjacent to a series of concrete blocks along the shore (100–300 m). These areas were repeatedly utilized by all the yellow eels tracked during the study. The yellow eels spent most of their time in these refuges during daytime and moved predominantly at night. In contrast, a silver eel released in November demonstrated rapid movement towards the sea without stopping after release.  相似文献

The effects of sex steroids on sex differentiation in the European eel were studied. The steroids, 17α-methyltestosterone (MT) and 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE), were given in the diet to 6–8 cm elvers and to 15–18 cm and 22–25 cm yellow eels. In our rearing conditions a very large percentage of the untreated eels developed as males. No masculinizing effect of MT could be demonstrated. The EE, administered at a dose of 10 mg kg-1 of diet to 6–8 cm elvers and 15–18 cm eels, induced ovarian differentiation in about 90 and 65% of eels respectively, while in the control <5% of females was recorded. In 22–25 cm yellow eels a moderated feminizing effect was observed.
Histological analysis of the gonads of treated eels showed that sex steroids affect the gonadal structure. The androgen stimulates hypertrophy of compact connective tissue, early differentiation of Leydig cells, Sertoli cells and early formation of the spermatic duct. Oestrogen inhibits the differentiation of these structural components and stimulates the differentiation of follicular cells and an ovarian structure.
The involvement of gonadal structural components is discussed in relation to the effect of steroid treatment and to the peculiarities of sex differentiation in the European eel.  相似文献

Studies were conducted during 1991–1993 on environmental factors affecting the upstream migration of eels in the Rivers Severn and Avon, England. Migrants (> 156 000 pigmented elvers and > 189 000 juveniles) were trapped as they attempted to ascend weir or sluice barriers. Multiple regression models were developed to compare catches per trap per night (C) with data for various key environmental parameters at seven sites, from the tidal limit to a maximum of 42.5 km upstream. The key stimulus for migration of both elvers and juveniles at the tidal limit was water temperature, with some weaker monthly influences related to seasonal temperature increases. Smaller annual influences probably related to earlier glass eel recruitment into the lower estuary. A weak early tidal effect was demonstrated only once, in 1993 in the Severn. Temperature also exerted significant effects on C of juvenile eels at the tidal limit and in the non-tidal rivers, although effects weakened with distance upstream. Year, month, river flows and whether traps were mounted on weirs or sluices made only small contributions at a few sites. Distance between traps also contributed to combined data for upper Severn sites. The threshold temperature in all cases was 14–16°C, with low to zero catches below 10–11°C, catch maxima being achieved above 18–20°C. The implications of strong temperature-dependence of migration in relation to stock recruitment and management are discussed. Special reference is made to recent decreases in recruitment of eels to Europe and N. America and possible long-term effects of global warming.  相似文献

1. The spatial distribution of European eels in 18 U.K. rivers was related to distance from tidal limit using a negative exponential model. This function accounted for between 19 and 90% of the variation in eel density where quantitative data was available. For semiquantitative data the negative exponential function was a significant predictor of eel densities in only six out of 10 cases, although all rivers showed a consistent decline in abundance with distance upstream from the tidal limit. 2. The spatial distribution of different age groups of European eel in River Severn showed an initial rapid dispersion into freshwater followed by a much slower dispersion rate. Movement of the population upstream by a wave‐form migration process does not occur in this system. Instead colonisation of freshwaters can be seen as a two‐phase dispersion. Phase‐1 is a rapid dispersion upstream driven by density at the point source. Phase‐2 commences once the eels become yellow eels and is equivalent to random diffusion of particles. 3. These processes have important implications for the penetration of freshwaters with reduced numbers of eel larvae arriving on the coast of Europe and North America. Eel abundance will decrease more in freshwaters in an upstream direction whilst it may remain stable or decrease to a lesser extent in estuaries. They are also able to explain the demography of eels migrating upstream over weirs and the observations of varying sex ratios within catchments. We conclude that a dispersion model dependent on age, temperature, difficulty of migration, habitat quality and density of eels should be an important part of freshwater eel management.  相似文献

Synchronisation of swimming activity to water current reversal every 6.2 h was tested in the European glass eel (Anguilla anguilla L.). When presented with a change in water current direction, glass eels exhibited rhythmic patterns of activity with a period close to the tidal one. Glass eels began to swim with the current and then alternated between positive and negative rheotaxis after each change in the water current direction. Results are discussed in relation to the flood tidal transport theory. Following synchronisation to current reversal, glass eels subjected to constant conditions displayed a weak rhythmic activity suggesting that locomotor behaviour might, in the wild, synchronise to several environmental cues related to the tide. Results obtained with different densities also suggest that social cues might improve the synchronisation.  相似文献

Glass eels and elvers of the American eel were negatively buoyant. Those adapted to sea water were more dense (1.072 ± 0.001 g cm−3) than those adapted to fresh water (1.061 ± 0.001 g cm−3). Adaptation to fresh water increased relative body water content, but did not account for the observed decrease in total body density. Histological examination revealed the presence of a potentially functional swimbladder in the glass eels, although this hydrostatic organ did not becomegas-filled until after freshwater residency had occurred. Calculation of lift as used in the selective tidal transport mechanism suggests that hydrodynamic compensation for horizontal swimming during the estuarine phase of migration is energetically adaptive.  相似文献
