(1) The compound eye of Musca exhibits characteristics which have heretofore frequently been considered evidence for color receptors: (a) The spectral sensitivity curve has several peaks whose relative heights can be altered by selective adaptation to colored lights, and (b) the shape of the retinal action potential varies with wave length. (2) The action spectrum for the red enhancement of on and off responses is compared with the "red receptor" calculated by Mazokhin-Porshnyakov from colorimetric data obtained in rapid color substitutions. Both have maxima at 615 to 620 mµ and appear to be different expressions of the same phenomenon. (3) A red receptor is absent. The evidence which suggests different types of receptors in the region 500 to 700 mµ can be accounted for by variations in the numbers of receptors stimulated. In red light there is a recruitment of additional ommatidia caused by leakage of long wave lengths through the pigment screen, and this spatial summation potentiates the on and off responses. The principal evidence is: (a) a white eye mutant which has no accessory screening pigments also lacks the peak of sensitivity in the red, even when adapted to violet light; (b) white-eyed flies give identical responses with large on and off effects at all wave lengths from 500 to 700 mµ; and (c) reducing the number of excited ommatidia by decreasing the size of the test spot makes the on and off transients smaller relative to the receptor component.  相似文献

We respond more quickly to our own face than to other faces, but there is debate over whether this is connected to attention-grabbing properties of the self-face. In two experiments, we investigate whether the self-face selectively captures attention, and the attentional conditions under which this might occur. In both experiments, we examined whether different types of face (self, friend, stranger) provide differential levels of distraction when processing self, friend and stranger names. In Experiment 1, an image of a distractor face appeared centrally – inside the focus of attention – behind a target name, with the faces either upright or inverted. In Experiment 2, distractor faces appeared peripherally – outside the focus of attention – in the left or right visual field, or bilaterally. In both experiments, self-name recognition was faster than other name recognition, suggesting a self-referential processing advantage. The presence of the self-face did not cause more distraction in the naming task compared to other types of face, either when presented inside (Experiment 1) or outside (Experiment 2) the focus of attention. Distractor faces had different effects across the two experiments: when presented inside the focus of attention (Experiment 1), self and friend images facilitated self and friend naming, respectively. This was not true for stranger stimuli, suggesting that faces must be robustly represented to facilitate name recognition. When presented outside the focus of attention (Experiment 2), no facilitation occurred. Instead, we report an interesting distraction effect caused by friend faces when processing strangers’ names. We interpret this as a “social importance” effect, whereby we may be tuned to pick out and pay attention to familiar friend faces in a crowd. We conclude that any speed of processing advantages observed in the self-face processing literature are not driven by automatic attention capture.  相似文献

Background

Animals'' ability for cross-modal recognition has recently received much interest. Captive or domestic animals seem able to perceive cues of human attention and appear to have a multisensory perception of humans.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Here, we used a task where horses have to remain immobile under a vocal order to test whether they are sensitive to the attentional state of the experimenter, but also whether they behave and respond differently to the familiar order when tested by a familiar or an unknown person. Horses'' response varied according to the person''s attentional state when the order was given by an unknown person: obedience levels were higher when the person giving the order was looking at the horse than when he was not attentive. More interesting is the finding that whatever the condition, horses monitored much more and for longer times the unknown person, as if they were surprised to hear the familiar order given by an unknown voice.

Conclusion/Significance

These results suggest that recognition of humans may lie in a global, integrated, multisensory representation of specific individuals, that includes visual and vocal identity, but also expectations on the individual''s behaviour in a familiar situation.  相似文献

Abstract. Mitotic index was determined in whole mounts of segments of seminiferous tubules of (101 × C3Hf)F1 male mice at 3 hr intervals from 18.00 to 06.00 hours, and at hourly intervals from 08.00 to 16.00 hours. the highest frequency of metaphase-anaphase figures occurred at 10.00 and 11.00 hours, but was not significantly higher than for other times. Injection of 25 μCi 3H-TdR per mouse, followed 24 hr later by exposure to 300 rad X-rays and killing 207 hr after labelling was used to test for circadian rhythm in DNA synthetic activity of the long-cycling A, spermatogonia. No significant effect of time of day was observed. Likewise, the number of undifferentiated spermatogonia scored 183 hr after 300 rad showed no effect of time of day. the testis therefore appears to have no circadian rhythm in mitotic activity. Stage of the cycle of the seminiferous epithelium, however, showed a significant effect on mitotic index of As spermatogonia and on DNA synthetic activity of undifferentiated spermatogonia. These data are compared with those for other organisms and tissues in respect to which properties of stem cells are general for all organisms and tissues and which are specific for spermatogonia.  相似文献

Background

Nociception is the physiological detection of noxious stimuli. Because of its obvious importance, nociception is expected to be widespread across animal taxa and to trigger robust behaviours reliably. Nociception in invertebrates, such as crustaceans, is poorly studied.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Three decapod crustacean species were tested for nociceptive behaviour: Louisiana red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii), white shrimp (Litopenaeus setiferus), and grass shrimp (Palaemonetes sp.). Applying sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid, or benzocaine to the antennae caused no change in behaviour in the three species compared to controls. Animals did not groom the stimulated antenna, and there was no difference in movement of treated individuals and controls. Extracellular recordings of antennal nerves in P. clarkii revealed continual spontaneous activity, but no neurons that were reliably excited by the application of concentrated sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid.

Conclusions/Significance

Previously reported responses to extreme pH are either not consistently evoked across species or were mischaracterized as nociception. There was no behavioural or physiological evidence that the antennae contained specialized nociceptors that responded to pH.  相似文献

Background

While more and more open procedures now routinely performed using laparoscopy, minimally invasive pancreaticoduodenectomy (MIPD) remains one of the most challenging abdominal procedures. Therefore, we carried out this meta-analysis to evaluate whether MIPD is safe, feasible and worthwhile.

Methods

PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library were searched to identify studies published between January 1994 and November 2013 comparing MIPD with open pancreaticoduodenectomy (OPD). Intraoperative outcomes, oncologic safety, postoperative complications, and postoperative recovery were evaluated.

Results

11 retrospective studies representing 869 patients (327 MIPDs, 542 OPDs) were included. MIPD was associated with a reduction in estimated blood loss (MD −361.93 ml, 95% CI −519.22 to −204.63 ml, p<0.001, I2 = 94%), wound infection (OR 0.41, 95% CI 0.22 to 0.78, p = 0.007, I2 = 0%), and hospital stay (MD −2.64 d, 95% CI −4.23 to −1.05 d, p = 0.001, I2 = 78%). However, it brings longer operative time (MD 105 min, 95% CI 49.73 to 160.26 min, p<0.001, I2 = 93%). There were no significant differences between the two procedures in likelihood of overall complications (p = 0.05), pancreatic fistula (PF) (p = 0.86), delayed gastric empting (DGE) (p = 0.96), positive surgical margins (p = 0.07), retrieval of lymph nodes (p = 0.48), reoperation (p = 0.16) and mortality (p = 0.64).

Conclusions

Our results suggest that MIPD is currently safe, feasible and worthwhile. But considering the selection bias, complexity of MIPD and lack of long-term oncologic outcomes, we suggest it be performed in a high-volume pancreatic surgery center in selected patients.  相似文献

The evolutionary history of certain species such as polyploids are modeled by a generalization of phylogenetic trees called multi-labeled phylogenetic trees, or MUL trees for short. One problem that relates to inferring a MUL tree is how to construct the smallest possible MUL tree that is consistent with a given set of rooted triplets, or SMRT problem for short. This problem is NP-hard. There is one algorithm for the SMRT problem which is exact and runs in time, where is the number of taxa. In this paper, we show that the SMRT does not seem to be an appropriate solution from the biological point of view. Indeed, we present a heuristic algorithm named MTRT for this problem and execute it on some real and simulated datasets. The results of MTRT show that triplets alone cannot provide enough information to infer the true MUL tree. So, it is inappropriate to infer a MUL tree using triplet information alone and considering the minimum number of duplications. Finally, we introduce some new problems which are more suitable from the biological point of view.  相似文献

Protein solution rheology data in the biophysics literature have incompletely identified factors that govern hydrodynamics. Whereas spontaneous protein adsorption at the air/water (A/W) interface increases the apparent viscosity of surfactant-free globular protein solutions, it is demonstrated here that irreversible clusters also increase system viscosity in the zero shear limit. Solution rheology measured with double gap geometry in a stress-controlled rheometer on a surfactant-free Immunoglobulin solution demonstrated that both irreversible clusters and the A/W interface increased the apparent low shear rate viscosity. Interfacial shear rheology data showed that the A/W interface yields, i.e., shows solid-like behavior. The A/W interface contribution was smaller, yet nonnegligible, in double gap compared to cone-plate geometry. Apparent nonmonotonic composition dependence of viscosity at low shear rates due to irreversible (nonequilibrium) clusters was resolved by filtration to recover a monotonically increasing viscosity-concentration curve, as expected. Although smaller equilibrium clusters also existed, their size and effective volume fraction were unaffected by filtration, rendering their contribution to viscosity invariant. Surfactant-free antibody systems containing clusters have complex hydrodynamic response, reflecting distinct bulk and interface-adsorbed protein as well as irreversible cluster contributions. Literature models for solution viscosity lack the appropriate physics to describe the bulk shear viscosity of unstable surfactant-free antibody solutions.  相似文献

Elevated levels of inorganic nitrogen (N) deposition and earthworm invasion have the potential to alter N dynamics in eastern North American temperate forests. A regional comparison was conducted across 21 sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh) stands in southern Ontario, where forest floor C:N ratios ranged from 17 to 38 showed that, similar to many other studies, rates of potential net mineralization and nitrification increased below a forest floor C:N ratio threshold of approximately 25 and that nitrification rates are positively correlated with foliar N concentration. However, detailed measurements at four representative stands, receiving between 9.8 and 19 kg N ha?1 y?1 in throughfall, showed that foliar N levels were highest at the site with the lowest N deposition. The primary difference amongst these sites was the presence of invasive earthworms. Specifically, sites without earthworms had significantly higher forest floor N with a lower C:N ratio than the sites with earthworms. There was no significant difference in the rate of sugar maple litter decomposition or chemistry amongst the sites assessed after 540 days using fine (2-mm mesh) litter bags, suggesting that differences in forest floor N levels were most likely due to consumption of litter by large earthworm species and that the lower C:N ratio of the forest floor in sites without earthworms is brought about primarily by a much longer residence time. This work supports the conclusions that forest floor N concentration (or C:N ratio) has a very strong control on N dynamics in forests, but shows that the presence of earthworms can have an impact on forest floor C:N ratio and hence N dynamics that is greater than current levels of atmospheric inorganic N deposition in temperate forests of Ontario.  相似文献

Abstract: Hunting with shotguns inevitably causes wounding of game that are hit by pellets but not retrieved by the hunter. We examined the effects of pellets on body condition in a total of 2,164 pink-footed geese (Anser brachyrhynchus) that were captured by cannon-nets, x-rayed, and banded with neck collars after the closure of the hunting season in Denmark. All geese were sexed, aged, weighed, and wing lengths measured. In the overall material, 23.8% and 11.6% of adults and first-winter birds, respectively, carried pellets outside the gizzard. We derived an index of the body condition of individual birds as the residuals of linear regression of log-transformed wing length and weight. Statistical analyses showed a highly significant relationship between body condition, sex, and year, whereas number of pellets was not significantly related to body condition. The results suggest that geese that have been hit by shotgun pellets but have survived the hunting season, so-called lightly crippled individuals, are not injured to an extent to have detectable chronic effects.  相似文献
