Eulittoral seaweeds at different tidal elevations are exposed to various frequencies and durations of emergence. Their physiological activities (e.g. nutrient uptake) may be affected by water loss during emersion. We used three Porphyra species from different tidal elevations to test whether species at different vertical elevations on the shore respond differently to the increasingly non-marine environment, in terms of their physiological activities including nutrient uptake, tissue carbon, nitrogen and phycoerythrin contents. Simulated tidal cycles produced water losses of 0%, 40 ± 10% and 90 ± 5% tissue water. Emersion was stressful for all species regardless of their habitat. It was more stressful to nitrate and phosphate uptake for the sublittoral species P. yezoensis than eulittoral species, P. umbilicalis and P. leucosticta. Interestingly, tissue N for thalli that had been emerged and then re-submerged was significantly higher than those of continuously submerged individuals. During exposure, tissue N contents of all species declined but recovered quickly (e.g. within 30 min) after re-submergence. This result suggests that emersion-induced N release may constitute an undescribed biogeochemical pathway linking marine, terrestrial, and atmospheric N reservoirs.  相似文献

There is a great deal of speculation regarding the physiological and biochemical mechanisms that give certain seaweed species the ability to colonize the intertidal zone. Frequent exposure to ambient temperatures and high irradiance levels in addition to dehydration during tidal emersion generates acute physiological stress. The ability of seaweeds like Porphya to overcome these challenges and survive in such a harsh environment has been linked to elevated reactive oxygen metabolism. The current study focused on measuring seasonal changes in antioxidant enzymes plus alterations in pigment contents and photosynthetic efficiency of P. umbilicalis plants found growing in the uppermost intertidal zone. Our results suggest that P. umbilicalis exhibits increased antioxidant metabolism, which could contribute to its success in colonizing such a stressful habitat. Elevated levels of glutathione reductase GTR, catalase and carotenoid contents during emersion suggested heightened protection against reactive oxygen species ROS damage is a necessary attribute for species in the upper intertidal regions. This hypothesis was further strengthened by the finding that the greatest antioxidant increases were observed during summer months when irradiance levels and temperatures were at their peak. Winter emersion did not elicit the same physiological response, as antioxidant levels were similar in submersed and emersed plants. For the most part, photosynthetic pigments were largely affected by sun exposure and less by emersion stress. Shaded blades maintained higher concentrations of photosynthetic pigments compared to sun exposed thalli concurring with established research. Photosynthetic efficiency measurements indicated emersion and not sun exposure was the greater facilitator of photoinhibitory damage and ROS generation at PSII. The findings of this field study strengthen previous assertions that protection via elevated antioxidant metabolism and increased PSII repair are involved in providing relief from the acute environmental stresses in the intertidal zone.  相似文献

The effects of tidal elevation, emersion, sun exposure, and season on several antioxidant enzymes (ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and catalase), pigments (phycoerythrin, phycocyanin, chlorophyll a and total carotene) and photosynthetic efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) in Porphyra umbilicalis were evaluated. Plants were collected monthly from sun‐exposed and shaded locations in the high, mid, and low intertidal following periods of tidal emersion ranging from 0–6 hours. Glutathione reductase activity was greatly affected by emersion during summer months, while ascorbate peroxidase and catalase activities showed no seasonal patterns. Differences in glutathione reductase and catalase levels occurred between sun‐exposed and shaded plants in the high and mid intertidal during summer. At all elevations, photosynthetic pigments showed a strong seasonal trend, with the effect of sun exposure being most apparent during summer. While total carotene increased with emersion during summer months, the combined effects of emersion and season were inconsistent for phycoerythrin, phycocyanin and chl a. Photosynthetic efficiency (Fv/Fm) decreased following emersion in summer and fall. During most months, sun exposed plants had lower Fv/Fm values compared to plants growing in the shade. This study emphasizes the importance of examining the effects of abiotic stresses simultaneously in order to reveal interactive relationships.  相似文献

The genus Porphyra (and its sister genus Pyropia) contains important red algal species that are cultivated and/or harvested for human consumption, sustaining a billion-dollar aquaculture industry. A vast amount of research has been focused on species of this genus, including studies on genetics and genomics among other areas. Twelve novel microsatellite markers were developed here for Porphyra linearis. Markers were characterized using 32 individuals collected from four natural populations of P. linearis with total heterozygosity varying from 0.098 to 0.916. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 2 to 18. All markers showed cross amplification with Porphyra umbilicalis and/or Porphyra dioica. These polymorphic microsatellite markers are useful for investigating population genetic diversity and differentiation in P. linearis and may become useful for other genetic research on the reproductive biology of this important species.  相似文献

Understanding the physiological abilities of organisms to cope with heat stress is critical for predictions of species’ distributions in response to climate change. We investigated physiological responses (respiration and heart beat rate) of the ectotherm limpet Patella vulgata to heat stress events during emersion and the role of seasonal and microclimatic acclimatization for individual thermal tolerance limits. Individuals were collected from 5 microhabitats characterized by different exposure to solar radiation in the high intertidal zone of a semi-exposed rocky shore in winter and summer of 2014. Upper thermal tolerance limits (heat coma temperatures – HCTs, and heart rate Arrhenius break temperatures - ABTs) were determined for individuals from each microhabitat in both seasons under laboratory conditions. While we found a clear seasonal acclimatization, i.e., higher HCTs and ABTs in summer than in winter, we did not find evidence for microhabitat-specific responses that would suggest microclimatic acclimatization. However, operative limpet temperatures derived from in-situ temperature measurements suggest that individuals from sun exposed microhabitats have a much narrower thermal safety margins than those from less exposed surfaces or within crevices. Microhabitat specific thermal safety margins caused by high thermal heterogeneity at small spatial scales and the lack of short term acclimatization will likely shape small scale distribution patterns of intertidal species in response to the predicted increase in the frequency and intensity of heat waves.  相似文献

Variations of plant C: N: P stoichiometry could be affected by both some environmental fluctuations and plant physiological processes. However, the trade-off mechanism between them and their influencial factors were not understood completely. In this study, C, N, P contents and their stoichiometry of S. salsa’s plant organs (leaves, stems, and roots), together with their environmental factors including salinity, pH, soil N and soil P, were examined in the intertidal and supratidal habitats of coastal wetlands during the different sampling times (May, July, September, November). The results showed that both plant organ and sampling times affected C, N, and P and stoichiometry of S. salsa in the intertidal and supratidal habitats, however, their influencial conditions and mechanisms were different. In the intertidal habitat, the different slopes of C-P and N-P within interspecific organs suggested that plant P, C:P and N:P of S. salsa were modulated by P concentrations that allocated in the specific organs. However, the slopes of C-N were found to be not significant within interspecific organs, but during the sampling times. These differences of plant N and C:N were related with the physiological demand for N in the specific life history stage. In the supratidal habitat, no significant differences were found in the slopes of C-N, C-P, and N-P within interspecific organs. However, different slopes of C-N among the sampling times also indicated a self-regulation strategy for plant N and C:N of S. salsa in different ontogenetic stages. In contrast to the intertidal habitat, seasonal variations of P, C:P and N:P ratios within interspecific organs reflected the soil P characteristics in the supratidal habitat. Our results showed that the stoichiometric constraint strategy of plant S. salsa in this region was strongly correlated with the local soil nutrient conditions.  相似文献

BackgroundThe fern Dicranopteris linearis is a hyperaccumulator of rare earth elements (REEs), aluminium (Al) and silicon (Si). However, the physiological mechanisms of tissue-level tolerance of high concentrations of REE and Al, and possible interactions with Si, are currently incompletely known.MethodsA particle-induced X-ray emission (μPIXE) microprobe with the Maia detector, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy and chemical speciation modelling were used to decipher the localization and biochemistry of REEs, Al and Si in D. linearis during uptake, translocation and sequestration processes.ResultsIn the roots >80 % of REEs and Al were in apoplastic fractions, among which the REEs were most significantly co-localized with Si and phosphorus (P) in the epidermis. In the xylem sap, REEs were nearly 100 % present as REEH3SiO42+, without significant differences between the REEs, while 24–45 % of Al was present as Al-citrate and only 1.7–16 % Al was present as AlH3SiO42+. In the pinnules, REEs were mainly concentrated in necrotic lesions and in the epidermis, and REEs and Al were possibly co-deposited within phytoliths (SiO2). Different REEs had similar spatial localizations in the epidermis and exodermis of roots, the necrosis, veins and epidermis of pinnae of D. linearis.ConclusionsWe posit that Si plays a critical role in REE and Al tolerance within the root apoplast, transport within the vascular bundle and sequestration within the blade of D. linearis.  相似文献

The effects of tabtoxinine-β-lactam (T-β-L) on nitrate uptake and glutamine synthetase (GS) and nitrate reductase (NR) activities in roots of Avena sativa seedlings were determined. Seven-day-old oat seedlings placed in a 10 mm KNO3 and 0.5 mm T-β-L solution for 24 hours took up T-β-L and lost approximately 90% of their root GS activity. [3H]-T-β-L taken up by roots of seven-day-old oat seedlings was associated with GS immunoprecipitated from the extract of these roots. Total nitrate uptake and in vivo NR activity were decreased approximately 50% in the T-β-L treated roots. However, T-β-L uptake did not affect the induction phases of nitrate uptake or reduction, nor did it inhibit in vitro NR activity. Thus, the decrease in nitrate uptake and reduction is a secondary effect of T-β-L action. Roots of seven-day-old oat seedlings were inoculated with Pseudomonas syringae pv tabaci (Tox+) and the pathogen population in the rhizosphere was estimated by dilution plate count; 6 × 1013 bacteria were recovered after 3 days, as compared to the original inoculation with 7 × 109 bacteria, indicating a significant growth of the pathogen in the rhizosphere. The bacteria recovered from the rhizosphere caused chlorosis in tobacco leaves and produced T-β-L in culture; 1 × 1014 bacteria were recovered from roots of seedlings inoculated with P. syringae pv tabaci (Tox−) using the same inoculation and assay procedure as for the pv tabaci (Tox+). Extracts of surface-sterilized roots previously inoculated with P. syringae pv tabaci (Tox+) did not produce viable bacterial cultures when plated out on a complete medium. Oat seedlings growing in sand culture and inoculated with P. syringae pv tabaci (Tox+) had developed chlorosis, and root GS activity had declined to less than 10% of controls after 3 days. Conversely, seedlings inoculated with P. syringae pv tabaci (Tox−) never developed chlorosis and maintained normal levels of GS activity. All oat plants inoculated with P. syringae pv tabaci (Tox+) died within 7 days after inoculation as compared to the plants inoculated with P. syringae pv tabaci (Tox−) which grew to maturity.  相似文献

A prolific maize (Zea mays L.) genotype was grown to physiological maturity under greenhouse conditions to examine the effects of reproductive sink demand on (a) the remobilization of N accumulated during vegetative growth, and (b) the partitioning of N accumulated concurrent with ear development. One- and two-eared plants were treated with either a NO3 or NH4+ source of 15N-labeled N during reproductive growth. Plants with two ears enhanced grain production, N remobilization from the stalk and roots, and N translocation to the grain from concurrently assimilated N. But, remobilization of leaf-N was unaffected by ear number. In addition, N uptake and total dry matter accumulation during the reproductive period were also unaffected, although P uptake was greater in the two-eared plants. Less than 15% of the total K+ uptake was accumulated after silking while during this time more than 40% of the total N and more than 50% of the total P were absorbed. The data also indicate that with NO3 nutrition, internal recirculation of K+ between shoots and roots may play a prominent role in the transport of nitrogenous solutes during grain development. N source had no effect on dry matter production and N uptake of both one- and two-eared plants. However, slightly greater partitioning of labeled-N from the NH4+ source to the grain was observed in the two-eared plants.  相似文献

We compared growth kinetics of Prorocentrum donghaiense cultures on different nitrogen (N) compounds including nitrate (NO3 ), ammonium (NH4 +), urea, glutamic acid (glu), dialanine (diala) and cyanate. P. donghaiense exhibited standard Monod-type growth kinetics over a range of N concentraions (0.5–500 μmol N L−1 for NO3 and NH4 +, 0.5–50 μmol N L−1 for urea, 0.5–100 μmol N L−1 for glu and cyanate, and 0.5–200 μmol N L−1 for diala) for all of the N compounds tested. Cultures grown on glu and urea had the highest maximum growth rates (μm, 1.51±0.06 d−1 and 1.50±0.05 d−1, respectively). However, cultures grown on cyanate, NO3 , and NH4 + had lower half saturation constants (Kμ, 0.28–0.51 μmol N L−1). N uptake kinetics were measured in NO3 -deplete and -replete batch cultures of P. donghaiense. In NO3 -deplete batch cultures, P. donghaiense exhibited Michaelis-Menten type uptake kinetics for NO3 , NH4 +, urea and algal amino acids; uptake was saturated at or below 50 μmol N L−1. In NO3 -replete batch cultures, NH4 +, urea, and algal amino acid uptake kinetics were similar to those measured in NO3 -deplete batch cultures. Together, our results demonstrate that P. donghaiense can grow well on a variety of N sources, and exhibits similar uptake kinetics under both nutrient replete and deplete conditions. This may be an important factor facilitating their growth during bloom initiation and development in N-enriched estuaries where many algae compete for bioavailable N and the nutrient environment changes as a result of algal growth.  相似文献

Rhizosolenia mats conduct extensive vertical migrations in theoligotrophic central North Pacific (cNP) gyre that permit thesediatoms to acquire nitrate at depth and return to the surfacefor photosynthesis. The ultimate fate of this N within the ecosystemis unknown, but may include remineralization by grazing, lossto depth by sinking biomass, or N excretion by Rhizosoleniamats. Direct release of N by mats into the mixed layer wouldrepresent an upward biological pump that circumvents the diffusionbarriers and nutrient sinks at the base of the oceanic euphoticzone. We examined Rhizosolenia mat N release along a transect(28–31° N) in the summer of 2002 (Hawaii to California)and 2003 (Hawaii to west of Midway Island) using sensitive fluorometricand chemiluminescence methods. Nitrate, NO2 and NH4+release was determined. Nitrate and NH4+ release by the matsoccurred in both 2002 (22.84 ± 6.04 and 3.69 ±1.74 nmol N µg–1 Chl a h–1, respectively)and 2003 (23.74 ± 3.54 and 3.60 ± 0.74 nmol Nµg–1 Chl a h–1, respectively). Nitrite releaseonly occurred in the 2003 summer period but occurred in bothyears when Fe chelators were added. Fv/Fm values decreased westwardin 2003 suggesting a gradient of increasing physiological stresstowards the west. The various physiological measures are consistentwith concurrent Fe stress; however, other possibilities exist.Nitrate excretion was the dominant form of N release in bothyears and provided a substantial addition to the ambient nitratepool in the mixed layer. Rhizosolenia mat nitrate release suppliesat least 4–7% of the nitrate pool on daily basis, andpossibly as much as 27%. Rhizosolenia mats are part of a largephytoplankton community that appears to migrate, and rates couldbe significantly higher. Literature reports suggest little orno nitrification in the upper euphotic zone, and thus biologicaltransport and release of nitrate may be a major source to thisregion. This N release is uncoupled from upward CO2 transportand, like N2 fixation, provides a component of the N pool availablefor net carbon removal.  相似文献

An important life history trait of macroalgae species is the physiological ability to cope with nutrient limiting conditions, which seasonally occur in temperate coasts while other environmental factors are adequate (e.g., sufficient light). Nitrogen (N) and Phosphorus (P) uptake kinetics and field growth limitation were investigated in the perennial Bifucaria bifurcata, the opportunistic Ulva intestinalis, and the summer-annual Nemalion helminthoides from Asturian coasts (N Spain). We performed 4 nutrient uptake experiments (ammonium, nitrate, nitrate + ammonium, and phosphate) and monitored the growth and N content of field individuals in the presence/absence of artificial nutrient supply to assess potential growth limitations. B. bifurcata was not actively growing during summer thus low nutrient demands probably relied on stored pools and/or the low background nutrient levels in seawater, as generally observed for perennials. Corresponding N content and uptake rates in this species were the lowest. The opportunistic U. intestinalis showed kinetics suitable for assimilating N quickly at high external concentrations in order to fulfill the high nutrient demands that support its fast-growing strategy. This response is well adapted to seasons and sites of high nutrient loading but signs of nutrient starvation during summer (decreasing growth and N content) were found in the pristine studied area. N. helminthoides showed an intermediate response in terms of thallus N content and uptake affinity, together with an inducible activation of nitrate uptake. This response assured the uptake of transient nutrient pulses without the nutrient storage response of perennials, or the costly enzymatic machinery of opportunistics. This allows N. helminthoides to effectively exploit low background nutrient conditions interrupted by transient peaks during spring-summer, when most ephemerals found difficulties to survive and perennials suspend their active growth. P uptake did not differ greatly between species suggesting its secondary importance compared to N in the tested algae.  相似文献

  • 1.1. Observation of ventilation in immersed Pholis gunnellus showed a linear relationship between ventilatory rate and temperature between 8 and 20°C.
  • 2.2. At 13°C and after 30 min emersion, ventilatory rate was initially lower than prior to emersion, providing evidence of adequate uptake of O2 for standard metabolism during the emersion period.
  • 3.3. This species has a laterally elongate body form with reduced scales and extensive mucus secretion.
  • 4.4. During emersion, gaping behaviour probably exposes the gills and extensively vascularised oesophageal regions to air.
  • 5.5. These are considered to be morphological and behavioural adaptations by P. gunnellus, to aerial respiration in the intertidal habitats occupied by this species.

Deficiencies of each macronutrient (N, P, K, Ca. Mg, S, and Fe) decreased the specific activity of nitrate reductase from Triticum aestivum L. seedlings. Nitrate content was decreased by N, P, K, Ca, and Mg deficiencies and unaffected by S and Fe deficiencies. Glutamic acid dehydrogenase activity was decreased by N, P, and S deficiencies, unchanged by K deficiency, and increased by Ca, Mg, and Fe deficiencies. Glutamine synthetase activity closely paralleled nitrate reductase activity and was decreased by deficiencies of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and S. Glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase was not sensitive to macronutrient deficiencies. High 14C-leucine incorporation into tissue sections of N-, P-, K-, Ca-, and S-deficient seedlings did not appear indicative of protein synthesis rates in intact seedlings. Nutritional deficiencies apparently depleted endogenous amino acid pools and caused less inhibition of exogenous 14C-leucine incorporation into protein.  相似文献

For autogenic ecosystem engineers, body size is an aspect of individual performance that has direct connections to community structure; yet the complex morphology of these species can make it difficult to draw clear connections between the environment and performance. We combined laboratory experiments and field surveys to test the hypothesis that individual body size was determined by disparate localized physiological responses to environmental conditions across the complex thallus of the intertidal kelp Hedophyllum sessile, a canopy‐forming physical ecosystem engineer. We documented substantial (> 40%) declines in whole‐thallus photosynthetic potential (as Maximum Quantum Yield, MQY) as a consequence of emersion, which were related to greater than 10‐fold increases in intra‐thallus MQY variability (as Coefficient of Variation). In laboratory experiments, desiccation and high light levels during emersion led to lasting impairment of photosynthetic potential and an immediate > 25% reduction in area due to tissue contraction, which was followed by complete loss of structural integrity after three days of submersion. Tissue exposed to desiccation and high light during emersion had higher nitrogen concentrations and lower phlorotannin concentrations than tissue in control treatments (on average 1.36 and 0.1x controls, respectively), suggesting that conditions during emersion have the potential to affect food quality for consumers. Our data indicate that the complex thallus morphology of H. sessile may be critical to this kelp’s ability to persist in the intertidal zone despite the physiological challenges of emersion and encourage a more nuanced view of the concept of “sub‐lethal stress” on the scale of the whole individual.  相似文献

Coastal zones act as a sink for riverine and atmospheric nitrogen inputs and thereby buffer the open ocean from the effects of anthropogenic activity. Recently, microbial activity in sandy permeable sediments has been identified as a dominant source of N-loss in coastal zones, namely through denitrification. Some of the highest coastal denitrification rates measured so far occur within the intertidal permeable sediments of the eutrophied Wadden Sea. Still, denitrification alone can often account for only half of the substantial nitrate (NO3 ) consumption. Therefore, to investigate alternative NO3 sinks such as dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA), intracellular nitrate storage by eukaryotes and isotope equilibration effects we carried out 15NO3 amendment experiments. By considering all of these sinks in combination, we could quantify the fate of the 15NO3 added to the sediment. Denitrification was the dominant nitrate sink (50–75%), while DNRA, which recycles N to the environment accounted for 10–20% of NO3 consumption. Intriguingly, we also observed that between 20 and 40% of 15NO3 added to the incubations entered an intracellular pool of NO3 and was subsequently respired when nitrate became limiting. Eukaryotes were responsible for a large proportion of intracellular nitrate storage, and it could be shown through inhibition experiments that at least a third of the stored nitrate was subsequently also respired by eukaryotes. The environmental significance of the intracellular nitrate pool was confirmed by in situ measurements which revealed that intracellular storage can accumulate nitrate at concentrations six fold higher than the surrounding porewater. This intracellular pool is so far not considered when modeling N-loss from intertidal permeable sediments; however it can act as a reservoir for nitrate during low tide. Consequently, nitrate respiration supported by intracellular nitrate storage can add an additional 20% to previous nitrate reduction estimates in intertidal sediments, further increasing their contribution to N-loss.  相似文献

Intertidal seaweeds must cope with a suite of stressors imposed by aerial exposure at low tide, including nutrient limitation due to emersion. Seaweeds can access nutrients only when submerged, so individuals living higher compared to lower on the shore may have adaptations allowing them to acquire sufficient amounts of nutrients to survive and maintain growth. Using a combination of observations and experiments, we aimed to identify intraspecific variation in nitrate uptake rates across the intertidal distribution of F. vesiculosus, as well as test for acclimation in response to a change in tide height. We replicated our study at sites spanning nearly the entire Gulf of Maine coastline, to examine how local environmental variability may alter intraspecific variation in nitrate uptake. We found that average nitrate uptake rates were ~18% higher in upper compared to lower intertidal Fucus vesiculosus. Furthermore, we found evidence for both acclimation and adaptation to tide height during a transplant experiment. F. vesiculosus transplanted from the lower to the upper intertidal zone was characterized by increased nitrate uptake, but individuals transplanted from the upper to the lower intertidal zone retained high uptake rates. Our observations differed among Gulf of Maine regions and among time points of our study. Importantly, these differences may reflect associations between nitrate uptake rates and abiotic environmental conditions and seaweed nutrient status. Our study highlights the importance of long‐term variation in ambient nutrient supply in driving intraspecific variation of seaweeds across the intertidal gradient and local and seasonal variation in ambient nutrient levels in mediating intraspecific differences.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) isotope patterns are useful for understanding carbon and nitrogen dynamics in mycorrhizal systems but questions remain about how different N forms, fungal symbionts, and N availabilities influence δ15N signatures. Here, we studied how biomass allocation and δ15N patterns in Pinus sylvestris L. cultures were affected by nitrogen supply rate (3% per day or 4% per day relative to the nitrogen already present), nitrogen form (ammonium versus nitrate), and mycorrhizal colonization by fungi with a greater (Laccaria laccata) or lesser (Suillus bovinus) ability to assimilate nitrate. Mycorrhizal (fungal) biomass was greater with ammonium than with nitrate nutrition for Suillus cultures but similar for Laccaria cultures. Total biomass was less with nitrate nutrition than with ammonium nutrition for nonmycorrhizal cultures and was less in mycorrhizal cultures than in nonmycorrhizal cultures. The sequestration of available N by mycorrhizal fungi limited plant N supply. This limitation and the higher energetic cost of nitrate reduction than ammonium assimilation appeared to control plant biomass accumulation. Colonization decreased foliar δ15N by 0.5 to 2.2‰ (nitrate) or 1.7 to 3.5‰ (ammonium) and increased root tip δ15N by 0 to 1‰ (nitrate) or 0.6 to 2.3‰ (ammonium). Root tip δ15N and fungal biomass on root tips were positively correlated in ammonium treatments (r 2?=?0.52) but not in nitrate treatments (r 2?=?0.00). Fungal biomass on root tips was enriched in 15N an estimated 6–8‰ relative to plant biomass in ammonium treatments. At high nitrate availability, Suillus colonization did not reduce plant δ15N. We conclude that: (1) transfer of 15N-depleted N from mycorrhizal fungi to plants produces low plant δ15N signatures and high root tip and fungal δ15N signatures; (2) limited nitrate reduction in fungi restricted transfer of 15N-depleted N to plants when nitrate is supplied and may account for many field observations of high plant δ15N under such conditions; (3) plants could transfer assimilated nitrogen to fungi at high nitrate supply but such transfer was without 15N fractionation. These factors probably control plant δ15N patterns across N availability gradients and were here incorporated into analytical equations for interpreting nitrogen isotope patterns in mycorrhizal fungi and plants.  相似文献

Water and nitrogen availability plays an important role in the biogeochemical cycles of essential elements, such as carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), in agricultural ecosystems. In this study, we investigated the seasonal changes of C, N and P concentrations, accumulation, partitioning, and C:N:P stoichiometric ratios in different plant tissues (root, stem-leaf, and panicle) of late-season rice under two irrigation regimes (continuous flooding, CF; alternate wetting and drying, AWD) and four N managements (control, N0; conventional urea at 240 kg N ha−1, UREA; controlled-release bulk blending fertilizer at 240 kg N ha−1, BBF; polymer-coated urea at 240 kg N ha−1, PCU). We found that water and N treatments had remarkable effects on the measured parameters in different plant tissues after transplanting, but the water and N interactions had insignificant effects. Tissue C:N, N:P and C:P ratios ranged from 14.6 to 52.1, 3.1 to 7.8, and 76.9 to 254.3 over the rice growing seasons, respectively. The root and stem-leaf C:N:P and panicle C:N ratios showed overall uptrends with a peak at harvest whereas the panicle N:P and C:P ratios decreased from filling to harvest. The AWD treatment did not affect the concentrations and accumulation of tissue C and N, but greatly decreased those of P, resulting in enhanced N:P and C:P ratios. N fertilization significantly increased tissue N concentration, slightly enhanced tissue P concentration, but did not affect tissue C concentration, leading to a significant increase in tissue N:P ratio but a decrease in C:N and C:P ratios. Our results suggested that the growth of rice in the Taihu Lake region was co-limited by N and P. These findings broadened our understanding of the responses of plant C:N:P stoichiometry to simultaneous water and N managements in subtropical high-yielding rice systems.  相似文献
