The global distribution of bat taxa indicates that the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans are effective barriers to movement between the Old and New Worlds. For instance, one of the major suborders, Yinpterochiroptera, has an exclusively Old World distribution, and within the other, Yangochiroptera, no species and only five genera are common to both. However, as bats are sometimes blown out to sea, and have colonised isolated islands, occasional natural movement between the New and Old Worlds does appear to be possible. Here we identify new genotypes of a blood parasite, Trypanosoma dionisii, in Old World bats that are closely related to South American strains. Using highly conservative calibration points, divergence of Old and New World strains is estimated to have occurred 3.2-5.0 million years ago (MYA), depending on the method used (upper 95% CL for maximum time 11.4MYA). The true date of divergence is likely to be considerably more recent. These results demonstrate that taxon-specific parasites can indicate historical movements of their hosts, even where their hosts may have left no lasting phylogenetic footprint. 相似文献

Ariid monophyly and intrafamilial relationships are investigated based on cladistic analysis of 230 morphological characters. Terminal taxa examined include whenever possible type‐species, or the most morphologically similar species to the type‐species of the nominal genera, and the largest possible number of species, including cleared and stained specimens, available in zoological collections. Previous hypotheses about monophyly of the Ariidae are strongly corroborated by new synapomorphies discovered in the present study. The subfamily Galeichthyinae and the remaining ariids are strongly supported by new morphological characters. The monotypic subfamily Bagreinae is recognized as the sister group to all nongaleichthyin ariids, supported by a large series of exclusive synapomorphies. A new concept of Ariinae is presented: the subfamily is found to be unequivocally monophyletic and includes all ariid genera, except Galeichthys and Bagre. New data supporting the monophyly of the genera included in the Ariinae are introduced and previous hypotheses of monophyly, species composition, morphological definition, and relationships are reviewed and discussed. 相似文献

Relationships between drosophilids (Diptera, Drosophilidae) and the environment in two contrasting tropical vegetations 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
ROSANA TIDON 《Biological journal of the Linnean Society. Linnean Society of London》2006,87(2):233-247
Although natural populations of drosophilid flies have been the subject of ecological studies, the population ecology of these insects in the tropics is still poorly known. This paper discusses aspects of the relationship between drosophilids and their environment, based on 28 monthly collections made in two contrasting vegetations of the Brazilian Cerrado biome: gallery forest and savanna. Exotic species were found in both types of environment; but 14 of the 30 captured Neotropical species occurred exclusively in the gallery forests, probably because of their climatic stability and greater environmental heterogeneity. Even though some endemic species were more abundant in the dry and cold months, most populations exhibited peaks of abundance in the wet season. The species diversity indexes (H' and D), higher in the dry season, were probably affected by increased evenness at this time of year, when the populations of practically all the species are greatly reduced. As species richness in the savanna vegetation clearly decreased in the dry season, increasing again in the wet season, it is suggested that some drosophilids migrate to the forests when climatic conditions are too stressful in the savannas. © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 87 , 233–247. 相似文献

DNA-sequence analyses of avian haemosporidian parasites, primarily of passerine birds, have described the phylogenetic relationships of major groups of these parasites, which are in general agreement with morphological taxonomy. However, less attention has been paid to haemosporidian parasites of non-passerine birds despite morphological and DNA-sequence evidence for unique clades of parasites in these birds. Detection of haemosporidian parasites in the Galapagos archipelago has raised conservation concerns and prompted us to characterise the origins and diversity of these parasites in the Galapagos dove (Zenaida galapagoensis). We used partial mitochondrial cytochrome b (cyt b) and apicoplast caseinolytic protease C (ClpC) genes to develop a phylogenetic hypothesis of relationships of haemosporidian parasites infecting New World Columbiformes, paying special attention to those parasites infecting the endemic Galapagos dove. We identified a well-supported and diverse monophyletic clade of haemosporidian parasites unique to Columbiformes, which belong to the sub-genus Haemoproteus (Haemoproteus). This is a sister clade to all the Haemoproteus (Parahaemoproteus) and Plasmodium parasites so far identified from birds as well as the Plasmodium parasites of mammals and reptiles. Our data suggest that the diverse Haemoproteus parasites observed in Galapagos doves are not endemic to the archipelago and likely represent multiple recent introductions. 相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships within the harpacticoid copepod family Peltidiidae Sars, including the description of a new genus 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
GEOFFREY R. F. HICKS 《Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society》1986,88(4):349-362
With the discovery of Alteuthoides kootare gen. et sp. no v. , found living inside an hexactinellid sponge from offshore waters of New Zealand, and the synonymization herein of Paralteutha T. Scott with Eupelte Claus, the number of genera in the harpacticoid copepod family Peltidiidae Sars now stands at eight. In the morphology of the maxillipeds and the armature of the first leg exopods, Alteuthoides is most similar to Alteuthella (A. Scott) and Alteuthellopsis Lang. These shared apomorphies are regarded as convergent ecological specializations to a lifestyle as close associates of other marine invertebrates. Results of a cladistic analysis further assist in the interpretation of relationships within the family. Lang's speculation that Peltidium and Parapeltidium form an independent lineage from the ancestral peltidiid gains further support. Alteutha remains as the basal group to the second lineage in comparison with which all remaining genera are derived in some respect. Alteuthellopsis would appear to be the most advanced genus in the family. Because of recent additions to Neopeltopsis Hicks and Alteuthellopsis , revised diagnoses, together with a revised key to genera, are also presented. 相似文献

We examined the geographic distributions and phylogenetic relationships of bisexual and unisexual (parthenogenetic) forms of the weevil Scepticus insularis on Hokkaido Island, northern Japan. Unisexual beetles were widespread throughout Hokkaido, whereas bisexuals were found only in three remote areas. Bisexuals (females and males) and unisexual females occurred sympatrically in two areas. We determined nucleotide sequences for part of the mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 (ND2; 633 bp) gene for 104 individuals, and for part of the nuclear internal transcribed spacer region 2 (ITS2; 360 bp) for 91 individuals. In an ND2 gene tree, haplotypes of S. insularis fell into two distinct clades (A and B), which were genetically differentiated from one another by 9.1% nucleotide sequence divergence. Haplotypes of females identified as unisexual were all in clade A, whereas those of females identified as bisexual belonged to clade B. Haplotypes of males were in clade B, except for two males having a clade-A haplotype. Circumstantial evidence suggests that these two males were produced by unisexual females. The ND2 tree suggests that the current unisexual form of S. insularis on Hokkaido was of a single origin. In contrast, a gene tree for ITS2 haplotypes show no clear divergence between the two modes of reproduction, with two major haplotypes shared by unisexual females, bisexual females, and males. This incongruence between the nuclear and mitochondrial phylogenies may be attributable to occasional gene flow between the unisexual and bisexual lineages through males occasionally produced by unisexual females, but our results do not exclude the possibility that the two lineages share polymorphic ancestral ITS2 haplotypes. 相似文献

Data consisting of high resolution profiles of in situ chlorophyll, copepods and primary production have been measured with a towedBatfish and profiling pumping system at two sites named BIOSTAT(9°45'N, 93°45'W) and DOME (7°19'N,83°25'W) sites during March 1981. Primary production profileswere generated from Batfish profiles using a chlorophyll/lightmodel and incubated pump samples, the latter with high verticalresolution of 35 m. The BIOSTAT site had a subsurfacechlorophyll maximum situated at {small tilde}50 m, and a productionmaximum at a depth of 40 m Copepods had a mean depth centroidcorresponding to the production maximum although their distributionwas more uniformly dispersed from 0 to 40 m. The latter observationindicated that copepods occurred at depths of high productionpotential and low biomass rather than high total productionand high biomass as found at 40 m depth. The DOME site had amixed surface layer of chlorophyll (020 m) while copepodswere located at the base of the chlorophyll layer and primaryproduction maximum located at the surface (010 m). Theareal daily production measured at the BIOSTAT and DOME siteswere 0.27 and 0.80 mg C m2day1 respectively. 相似文献

Summary The genome ofGlycine max (L.) Merr. cv. Dare contains a chlorophyll a/b binding (Cab) protein gene family consisting of 10 genes. The primary structures of two linkedCab genes (Cab 4 andCab 5) were determined. A comparison of the nucleic acid and predicted amino acid sequences ofCab 4 andCab 5 revealed a high degree of similarity (96% and 98%, respectively). Phylogenetic inferences drawn from sequence comparisons between previously characterized soybeanCab 1, 2, and 3 andCab 4 and 5 suggested that soybeanCab 3 was an evolutionarily distant member within this family. We further investigated the molecular evolution of theCab gene family by comparing nucleotide sequences from 25 differentCab genes representing diverse phylogenetic taxa including moncot and dicot species. Phylogenetic inferences from these data support existing morphological phylogenies in that all species within one family clustered together. These data suggested that the Solanaceae were more evolutionarily distant from the monocots than the Fabaceae and Brassicaceae. In addition, these data supported the theory thatCab Type I and II genes originated prior to divergence of the monocots and dicots. 相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships of the spider family Tetragnathidae (Araneae, Araneoidea) based on morphological and DNA sequence data 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The monophyly of Tetragnathidae including the species composition of the family (e.g., Are Nephila and their relatives part of this lineage?), the phylogenetic relationships of its various lineages, and the exact placement of Tetragnathidae within Araneoidea have been three recalcitrant problems in spider systematics. Most studies on tetragnathid phylogeny have focused on morphological and behavioral data, but little molecular work has been published to date. To address these issues we combine previous morphological and behavioral data with novel molecular data including nuclear ribosomal RNA genes 18S and 28S, mitochondrial ribosomal RNA genes 12S and 16S and protein‐coding genes from the mitochondrion [cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI)] and from the nucleus (histone H3), totaling ca. 6.3 kb of sequence data per taxon. These data were analyzed using direct optimization and static homology using both parsimony and Bayesian methods. Our results indicate monophyly of Tetragnathidae, Tetragnathinae, Leucauginae, the “Nanometa clade” and the subfamily Metainae, which, with the exception of the later subfamily, received high nodal support. Morphological synapomorphies that support these clades are also discussed. The position of tetragnathids with respect to the rest of the araneoid spiders remains largely unresolved but tetragnathids and nephilids were never recovered as sister taxa. The combined dataset suggests that Nephilidae is sister to Araneidae; furthermore, the sister group of Nephila is the clade composed by Herennia plus Nephilengys and this pattern has clear implications for understanding the comparative biology of the group. Tetragnathidae is most likely sister to some members of the “reduced piriform clade” and nephilids constitute the most‐basal lineage of araneids. 相似文献

ABSTRACTIn this paper, lymnaeid snails collected from 107 localities in Hokkaido, Japan were examined for infection by Fasciola larvae. DNA sequences from the snails were analysed phylogenetically based on their mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase (COI) gene. Based on shell morphology, the snails were identified as Galba truncatula, Radix auricularia, and Austropeplea ollula and were divided into distinct clades in the COI tree. No Fasciola larvae were detected in any of the collected snails. The 58 haplotypes of Galba truncatula which were found in Hokkaido included five detected previously in snails infected with Fasciola larvae, and constituted a closely related haplogroup (Gt-c1), suggesting that Gt-c1 snails would be susceptible to Fasciola sp. The Gt14 haplotype snails were considered to be Lymnaea schirazensis, an intermediate host of F. hepatica. The COI haplotypes of A. ollula belonged to a single clade, and were considered conspecific, whereas those of R. auricularia constituted three genetically distinct haplogroups, each of which was possibly a distinct species. This study suggests that morphologically-identified lymnaeid snails possibly include additional species. Further study of these snails is required to clarify their susceptibility to Fasciola sp. 相似文献

Generally, the family Nartheciaceae is thought to comprise Narthecium (7 spp.), Nietneria (2 spp.), Lophiola (2 spp.), Metanarthecium (1 sp.) and Aletris (ca. 30 spp.), but the taxonomy is quite controversial. To clarify nartheciaceous taxonomy, we conducted molecular phylogenetic analyses of four regions (atpB–rbcL, trnL, trnL–F and 18S rDNA; 4,048?bp in total) using 38 samples, and five regions (plus trnK; 6,337?bp in total) using 26 samples. The four- and five-region analyses indicated that Metanarthecium was the first to diverge from the Nartheciaceae, followed successively by Aletris, Lophiola, Nietneria and Narthecium. Metanarthecium has sometimes been considered congeneric with Aletris, but should be recognised as an independent genus. Aletris foliata, A.?fauriei, A.?formosana, A.?glabra and A.?sikkimensis have sometimes been considered conspecific, but this conclusion is not robustly supported. Originally, bifacial leaves and septal nectaries were present in the Nartheciaceae, but the leaves evolved to become unifacial and the septal nectaries were lost within the family, i.e. at the lineage of Narthecium, Nietneria and Lophiola. The ovary frequently shifted from the superior position to somewhat lower positions, and vice versa, in the Nartheciaceae. 相似文献

The Palaeogene Diomedeoididae are amongst the earliest representatives of procellariiform birds (albatrosses, tubenoses, and allies). Although several fossils of these birds have been reported in the past, many details of their osteology remained unknown. Here we describe a comprehensive collection of diomedeoidid fossils from the Rupelian stratotype in Belgium, which was found more than 100 years ago. The material includes all major limb elements as well as other cranial and postcranial bones, and allows the recognition of previously unknown features of phylogenetic significance. Based on these new osteological data, diomedeoidids were for the first time subjected to a phylogenetic analysis, which resulted in a position outside a clade including Hydrobatidae (northern storm‐petrels), Pelecanoididae (diving‐petrels), and Procellariidae (fulmars, petrels, shearwaters, and allies), either as the sister taxon of Diomedeidae (albatrosses) or as that of all crown group Procellariiformes. The latter placement is better supported by the osteological evidence, and diomedeoidids lack several apomorphies of crown group Procellariiformes. Previously unrecognized derived features are reported that support a monophyletic Hydrobatidae, thus contradicting recent proposals that Oceanitinae (southern storm‐petrels) are the earliest diverging crown group Procellariiformes. The new fossils also have a bearing on the convoluted taxonomy of diomedeoidids, and Diomedeoides Fischer, 1985 is synonymized with Rupelornis van Beneden, 1871. Diomedeoides lipsiensis (Fischer, 1983) is synonymous with Rupelornis definitus (van Beneden, 1871), a species that exhibits a large size range. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 166 , 854–875. 相似文献

Abstract A phylogenetic analysis of the Melanthripidae genus Cranothrips Bagnall is presented. A data matrix with continuous and discrete characters was analysed under parsimony criteria. Continuous and discrete characters were analysed, separately and in combination. When the different blocks of characters were analysed separately, important differences in tree topologies occurred. The optimal tree obtained from discrete characters alone was similar to the tree resulting from total evidence. For most groups, the support values resulting from all the evidence analysis were higher than those obtained from the discrete‐only analysis. Two new species from Australia are described and illustrated, Cranothrips ibisca sp.n. and Cranothrips conostylus sp.n. A key to the 12 species in the genus is provided. Additionally, the host associations and the distributional patterns of the four worldwide genera of Melanthripidae are discussed. 相似文献

Phylogenetic analyses of nucleotide sequences of the internal transcribed spacers and 5.8 regions of the nuclear ribosomal
DNA and of the trnH-psbA spacer of the chloroplast genome confirm that the three taxa of the Jacquemontia ovalifolia (Choicy) Hallier f. complex (Convolvulaceae) form a monophyletic group. Levels of nucleotide divergence and morphological
differentiation among these taxa support the view that each should be recognized as distinct species. These three species
display unique intercontinental disjunction, with one species endemic to Hawaii (Jacquemontia sandwicensis A. Gray.), another restricted to eastern Mexico and the Antilles [Jacquemontia obcordata (Millspaugh) House], and the third confined to East and West Africa (J. ovalifolia). The Caribbean and Hawaiian species are sister taxa and are another example of a biogeographical link between the Caribbean
Basin and Polynesia. We provide a brief conservation review of the three taxa based on our collective field work and investigations;
it is apparent that J. obcordata is highly threatened and declining in the Caribbean. 相似文献

The familial placements of Cyrtandromoea Zoll. and Wightia Wall., two small and enigmatic South‐East Asian genera, have long been controversial in Lamiales. Here we adopt a two‐step approach to resolve their phylogenetic relationships. We initially reconstructed a large‐scale phylogeny of Lamiales using six chloroplast markers (atpB, matK, ndhF, psbBTNH, rbcL, and rps4). The results showed that both Cyrtandromoea and Wightia emerged in the LMPO clade, including Lamiaceae, Mazaceae, Phrymaceae, Paulowniaceae, and Orobanchaceae. Based on the second set of six chloroplast markers (atpB, matK, ndhF, rbcL, rps16, and trnL‐F) and two nuclear ribosomal regions (external transcribed spacer and internal transcribed spacer) for the analyses focusing on the LMPO clade, our results revealed that Cyrtandromoea was consistently nested within Phrymaceae, whereas Wightia was supported as sister to Phrymaceae by the chloroplast DNA dataset or sister to Paulowniaceae by the nuclear ribosomal DNA dataset. Morphological and anatomical evidence fully supports the inclusion of Cyrtandromoea in Phrymaceae, and an updated tribal classification is done for Phrymaceae with five tribes, that is, Cyrtandromoeeae Bo Li, Bing Liu, Su Liu & Y. H. Tan, trib. nov., Diplaceae Bo Li, Bing Liu, Su Liu & Y. H. Tan, trib. nov., Leucocarpeae, Mimuleae, and Phrymeae. The conflicting phylogenetic position of Wightia indicated by different genome markers results in difficulty placing the genus in either Phrymaceae or Paulowniaceae. Considering the distinct morphological differences between Wightia and other families in the LMPO clade, we here propose a new family, Wightiaceae Bo Li, Bing Liu, Su Liu & Y. H. Tan, fam. nov., to accommodate it, which is the 26th family recognized in Lamiales. 相似文献
